The 15 Best Personal Submarines For Superyacht Owners

By Victor Baker

Updated on February 11, 2023

Best Personal Submarines

Back in the old days, submarines were solely used for utilitarian purposes, like for research or for the military. But after many years of sitting on the edge of yachting manufacturing, personal submarines are becoming an established mode of transport for personal leisure.

Of course, the prices are exuberant, so it’s still a toy for the rich and famous, but us mere mortals can dream of some luxury, can’t we?

There are four main brands that are into submarine making that have been working on refining their designs for a good part of the last couple of decades. A fifth one is in the process of building a submarine with an interior that resembles a luxury business jet that will hopefully break through the barriers of the industry.

NEMO Submarine

Do you recall the 1977 James Bond movie , where his car became an immersible submarine? Back then we all thought that was fantasy, and those fantasies only existed in the movies. Well, Aston Martin is working on making that dream a reality. They are hoping to come up with the first submersible car to explore the oceans underwater while maintaining a luxurious lifestyle the brand believes in.

The research vessels have been around for a while, and their place is well established in the yacht industry . But the ultimate superyacht toys are in a category all of their own. We will explore the world most of us still only dream of, while a few fortunate humans can call this their hobby.

Triton personal submarine

Superyacht owners are into a different set of toys they like to spend their time with, such as helicopters, jet skis , or jacuzzis. The new and improved submarines that are built now are meant to be handled by more yachts than in the past. Usually, the submarine is launched with a crane that can handle the weight to lift it and the superyacht needs to possess the capacity to deal with all that entails. The crew should be experienced as well if they want to avoid accidents.

If you’re in the market for a personal submarine, they start at about one million US dollars, but some exceed that price by a lot more, and can even go into dozens of millions. Some of the factors such as maximum depth, submerged time, and payload capacity can all have an effect on the final cost. If you get all the bells and whistles, you are looking at a different price range.

Let’s see which are the 15 best personal submarines in the world right now.

  • Seabreacher X

Seabreacher X

Among the most technologically advanced marine vessels ever built, the Seabreacher X is a two-seater sub equipped with a 300 high-powered engine. If you’re familiar with the Y model, then you can notice the similarities in size. It is more aggressive shape-wise and it provides better propulsion while underwater with the fully vectored thrust system.

With about five meters (or 16 feet) in length, its design resembles a shark, and it seems as if it really mimics the tail articulation of water mammals.

  • U-Boat Worx C-Explorer

U-Boat Worx C-Explorer 5

With a maximum depth of up to 1,000 feet, the three or five-seat C-Explorer can stay underwater for up to eight hours. Not the largest sub we looked at, its transparent acrylic hull provides its passengers with cool 360-degree views.

It has a climate-controlled cabin that keeps its occupants comfortable for the duration of the trip. Even if you encounter some rough waters, the machine will keep its stability due to the dual-pontoon hull design.

  • DeepFlight Necker Nymph

DeepFlight Necker Nymph

Built for Richard Branson and his paradise resort Necker Island, the Necker Nymph is 4.6 meters (15 feet) long, with a beam of 3 meters (just under ten feet). This open-cockpit winged submarine accommodates a party of three plus one crew member, and it reaches up to 150 feet underwater. It is considered more of an extension of scuba diving rather than a submarine though.

Offering a speed of up to 6 knots, it is a little fun machine for weekend getaways. The Virgin owner flies underwater thanks to its positive buoyancy system designer Graham Hawkes built especially for this model.

  • Triton 600/2

Triton 600 2

The smallest offering from Triton Subs , this little machine weighs in at just 2,500 kg (or just a little over 5,500 lbs), and standing at 1,47m (or just under five feet). The svelte new design has the same power as Triton’s flagship model. It seats two people, which makes this a nice size for owners that prefer to pilot their own vehicle.

You can dive up to 200 meters (about 650 feet), for a maximum of six hours. The sub reaches a top speed of four knots, which is not bad for a tiny submersible. It is also customizable, so you can make it your own.

  • DeepFlight Dragon

DeepFlight Dragon

Princess Yachts and Dragon collaborated for the design of this personal sub model, which fits in the garage of Princess 40M. It is made to fly underwater alongside large marine mammals. Its long shape makes navigating easier, and it flies beneath the surface to up to 330 feet using an electric motor. Some submarines use ballast to descend, but this is not the case for the DeepFlight Dragon.

The 16-foot submersible is one of the most streamlined models on the market. Due to its compact size, this two-person Dragon aspires to become standard equipment for superyachts.

  • U-Boat Worx Cruise Sub 7 1140

U-Boat Worx Cruise Sub 7 1140

This seven-person sub is the deepest diver on this list. The Cruise Sub 7 1140 from U-Boat Worx can descend underwater to 3,740 feet, and it can last up to 16 hours deep under the sea. It is an air-conditioned machine that comes with two acrylic spheres. The back-to-back seats allow for three passengers to face one way, and the other three in the opposite direction.

The seats are revolving, so everyone gets the same views. The eight thrusters of the flagship model are equipped with aids in the maneuverability department, and it also offers plenty of horsepower to navigate even in strong currents.

  • Triton 1650/3

Triton 1650 3

This three-person submersible is one of the lightest on the market. Also the most compact model, the Triton 1650/3 weighs in at 4,000 kg (or close to 9,000lbs), which makes it a bit heftier than others in this category. It can dive up to 500m (or 1640 feet) depths, but it does not take much room. It is compared to a pair of Jet Skis when stowed, that’s how well it does on storing space.

The passengers can benefit from 360 degree views that are possible because of the bulbous acrylic cabin. To resurface just use the single life point, and that’s it. Easy to use and fun all at once.

  • U-Boat Worx Nemo Submersible

U-Boat Worx Nemo Submersible

Specifically designed with superyachts in mind, the Nemo Submersible is the latest from submarine specialist U-Boat Works. The company offers a slick machine that can deep-dive up to 300 feet underwater, and it weighs in at roughly 5,500 lbs.

It is a pleasure launching and recovering it, as there is no need for a cradle. It also takes up as much room as two jet skis when you’re ready to store it. The design is also trendy and the colors are bright and visible.

  • EGO Compact Semi Submarine

EGO Compact Semi Submarine

This part boat part sub was invented by Korean company Raonhaje. Passengers can observe the marine life from an enclosed unit that submerges directly underwater, while it remains attached to the whole structure. The huge acrylic windows offer clear views of the underwater world from below deck.

Powered by an electric motor, it is an affordable and sustainable option. On top of that, it is a fairly silent model. What that means is that it does not scare away the marine life that surrounds it.

  • Nautilus VAS Submarine

Nautilus VAS Submarine

The US-based submersible maker Nautilus is the company behind this model, which took its inspiration from a military-style submarine construction. If you’re looking to purchase one of those submarines for your superyacht, you will enjoy hours underwater in pure comfort. Resembling a classic Bond vehicle, this luxury private submarine can hold up to five passengers.

Indoors, the machine is equipped with a toilet, stairs, a minibar, and it has enough headroom to be able to stand up freely. Using the large distortion-free optics, you can enjoy crystal clear views of marine life.

  • SEAmagine Ocean Pearl

SEAmagine Ocean Pearl

This two-person mini-submarine for luxury yachts goes for around $2.5 million. It has a maximum operating depth of 500 feet, and it can hold up for up to six hours. The clamshell design makes boarding easy with its large opening. It is also built to be able to handle multiple dives on the same day, without having to go back on deck.

Offering an excellent field of view to its occupants, it is also a safe and robust model. What’s cool about the Ocean pearl is the way it behaves underwater. It remains in the horizontal position at all times, and it doesn’t roll. In the event that the thrusters should stop, the submarine will rise back to the surface.

  • Aston Martin Triton Neptune

Aston Martin Triton Neptune

Teaming up with the brilliant people from Triton Submarines, Aston Martin wanted to design a brand new way to explore the underwater. Project Neptune is a fast, sleek, and extremely luxurious submersible that is changing the superyachting world. Think luxury car/yacht, with the same craftsmanship and detailing Astin Martin puts into creating its luxury cars.

Hand-stitched leather seats, a helm console are only a few of the numerous features the Neptune offers. It can remain submerged for up to eight hours, and go to depths of 1,640 feet.

  • SEAmagine Aurora 6

SEAmagine Aurora 6

Starting at $3.7 million, the Aurora 6 can carry five passengers and it reaches 3,300 feet. It contains six 10hp motors that offer extreme maneuverability. It can be compared to the same type of ease a multi-engine drone has. It seats a total of six people, including the pilot.

The guest lounge has room for three passengers that can enjoy the leather swivel chairs, while the others can sit at the back in their own seats. One of the larger sizes, it has its own toilet in the hull. The sub can go to 3,300 feet in-depth, and you can enjoy the marine life for up to eight hours.

  • Neyk Luxury L-1

Neyk Luxury L-1

The Neyk Luxury L-1 is easily one of the most ultra-modern submarine designs we’ve seen. Standing at 63-feet, this teardrop luxury sub can reach depths of 1,000 feet. Inside, the machine is spacious and can accommodate up to 12 guests. The height indoors goes up to six feet, so most people can stand comfortably.

Featuring a jet-style cockpit and all the bells and whistles they come with, the transparent nose cone provides you with a clear view of the ocean. The retractable undercarriage is built to drive up a ramp and use its own power. It is one of the most innovative designed submarines yet.

  • Phoenix 1000

Phoenix 1000

The single largest personal submarine ever made, it is also one of the most expensive ones . The size is impressive, at 65 meters (just under 215 feet), and a beam of about 8 meters (26 feet), it also has roughly 5,000 square feet of indoor area. It can fit a dozen people or so in its ten bedrooms, with its fully equipped kitchen, a jacuzzi, and a few viewing areas.

This underwater toy has capabilities of taking you to regions of the deep ocean other submersible machines cannot. It can make Transatlantic crossings at 16 knots of speed, all while keeping its passengers safe and comfortable. Luxury at its best, this will run you close to 2.3 billion US dollars.

These are the 15 best submarines for superyacht owners you can purchase this year. We hope you enjoyed this virtual tour into the gadgets the rich and famous invest their time and money into. Maybe one day we can also aspire to one of those submarines as our personal little toys.

The best submarines for superyachts

More than 80% of the world’s oceans remain unexplored but discovering the depths might be easier than you think. Built to cater from one to six guests and tailored to fit the weight and height restrictions of a superyacht tender garage, a personal submarine lets you explore the underwater world like never before. Dive into our edit of the best submersibles on the market...

U-Boat Worx Nexus

Dutch submersible manufacturer U-Boat Worx has added a new nine-person model to its line-up of deep-diving subs. With a maximum depth of 200m, the Nexus can operate for 18 hours, diving up to 10 times a day. Two designs have been revealed in the new series, both featuring an extra-large elliptical acrylic pressure hull and revolving seating arrangement for cinematic style viewing. An extra-large hatch has also been included on board the Nexus, allowing passengers to keep their dignity while entering and exiting the submersible.

Triton 600/2

Meet Triton's smallest and lightest submersible to date. Weighing just 2,500kg and standing 1.47m tall, the 660/2 packs the power of Triton's pro flagship submersible into a svelte new design which can slot into most superyacht tender garages without a hitch. The perfect size for owners looking to pilot their own submarine, two people can dive down to a depth of 200 metres and power along the seabed at a top speed of four knots for up to six hours. With numerous customisation options on offer, you can even tailor the sub to match its mothership.

tritonsubs.com

NEMO Submersible

NEMO is the smallest member of the U-Boat Worx fleet, offering a slick, deep-diving sub in a lightweight 2,500kg package. Designed with the yacht market in mind, the NEMO submersible can dive to depths of 100 metres with room for two, and at 2.3 metres wide requires less storage space than a pair of Jet Skis. Meanwhile, a simple launch and recovery system allows for ease of operation thanks to a single lifting point. At the 2021 Monaco Yacht Show, U-Boat Worx a single-seat version of the NEMO submersible named NEMO 1.

uboatworx.com

This three-person submarine is capable of diving to 457m and offers some clever onboard extras. The Aurora-3C is able to tilt at surface, providing a stable platform for boarding when stepping across from a superyacht. And by moving the hatch away from the top of the window and into a separate compartment, the model offers a greater field of view. The submarine's low height and even lower hoist point make an ideal for setup in confined spaces – say a superyacht tender garage - without compromising on comfort, practicality, and performance. The Aurora-3C also offers extras including a robotic arm, HD video systems and a fly-out rover with HD camera. You can even customise the colour.

Project Neptune

Project Neptune is the result of a collaboration between submarine specialist Triton and British car marque Aston Martin. This three-person submersible combines all the practical and technical elements of deep-sea exploration with a level of finesse and style that’s quintessentially Aston Martin. Able to dive to 500m, Project Neptune offers a bulbous cabin for panoramic views and a sleek, compact multihull silhouette for optimal speed and style under the waves. While a top speed of five knots might not sound like much – particularly for an Aston Martin – it’s actually four times the acceleration of Triton’s flagship 3300/3 submarine. Inside, a custom interior features hand-stitched leather and carbon-fibre trim.

U-Boat Worx Super Yacht Sub 3

Known for their reliable, workhorse subs used for scientific exploration, Dutch builder U-Boat Worx has a personal submarine specifically for superyachts. The Super Yacht Sub 3 is compact, lightweight with a virtually unimpeded view underwater. With a length of less than 3.2m and weighing 3,800kg, the sub is easy to fit on board, and can dive to 300m with a top speed of three knots. A retractable freeboard extender makes on-the-water boarding a breeze while the interior is kitted in out plush leather seats for comfortable cruising. Bonus features include a Bluetooth sound system and a cold-storage box.

Seamagine Aurora-6S

Created to give guests a completely immersive experience in the watery world below, SEAmagine’s Aurora series of submersibles features a massive glass bulb for unparalleled views as she dives up to 1,000m at a max speed of three knots for eight hours. The Californian company’s largest luxury sub, the Aurora-6S, seats five passengers and one pilot. A single-point hoist makes for uncomplicated launching, while an ergonomically designed aft section and telescopic handrails ease boarding. The entire set-up is ideal for deep-sea exploration with the family in tow. The Aurora-6S’s weight and size can be customised to suit the mothership, as can the colour.

Triton 1650/3

Triton's 1650/3 is the world's lightest and most compact three-person submersible. Designed to launched from a standard superyacht tender garage, the model takes up less space than a pair of Jet Skis when stowed but can still dive to depths of 500 metres.  Whether exploring coral reefs or shipwrecks, pilots and passengers will benefit from near 360-degree views thanks to a bulbous acrylic cabin and when it's time to resurface, a single lift point makes recovery a breeze.

Tour the World’s Most Luxurious Submarine Superyacht

By Dave Banks

Photography by Migaloo

If yacht owners really want to put everyone at port to shame, they should consider sailing on the Migaloo Private Submersible Yacht. A concept yacht created by Migaloo, an Austrian design and engineering firm, the line of luxury superyachts offers a range of bespoke underwater crafts that vary in size. After sailing the new Migaloo submersible yacht on the water, owners can close up the decks and turn the craft into a fully operational submarine.

“What we are attempting to do is to create a living space where exterior and interior interact in harmony,” says Christian Gumpold, managing director and head of design at Migaloo. With rooms that open to the ocean for dining alfresco while above water, and large viewing galleries for taking in the marine life when submersed, the Migaloo creates that harmony. What’s more, the firm reaffirms its focus on luxury with optional amenities that include helipads, swimming pools, movie theaters, elevators, wine cellars, libraries, and private terraces.

Of course, safety is a major focal point as well. Each superyacht will be built to U.S. Navy SUBSAFE safety standards, which ensure that the interiors will stay watertight and the vessel can recover from unanticipated flooding. According to Migaloo, solitude is a major point of interest for yacht owners, which is why the ability to dive beneath the surface and out of view might have great appeal. “Privacy is a big issue on superyachts,” says Gumpold, “our answer to this concern is simply submerging the vessel into complete privacy.”

Written by Zuzana Bednarova

65m undersea superyacht Phoenix 1000 is a personal luxury submarine built by US Submarines. Submarine yacht Phoenix 1000 is the single largest private undersea vehicle ever built, and probably one of the most important personal transportation devices of the century.

Phoenix 1000 by US Submarines

US Submarines Phoenix 1000 submarine

213´ luxury submarine yacht Phoenix 1000 has more than ample space. The total interior area of the submarine is in excess of 460 square meters (5000 square feet). The significant volume, coupled with very large acrylic viewports, and the potential for relatively large open spaces, results in a vehicle as luxurious as the finest of motor yachts.

Clearly, underwater super yacht Phoenix 1000 provides its owner with substantially more capability than a simple yacht – the opportunity to explore the depths of the world’s oceans in perfect comfort and safety. The Phoenix 1000 yacht is capable of making trans-Atlantic crossings at 16 knots yet can dive along the route and explore the continental margins of some of the most fascinating waters on earth.

US Submarines Phoenix 1000

And unlike surface yachts, when the water gets rough, the submarine can submerge into a perfectly smooth and quiet environment, continuing on toward its destination, providing a ride unsurpassed in quality-unequaled by the finest motor coach or the most luxurious executive aircraft.

At 65-meters (213 feet) in overall length, and with a beam in excess of 8 meters (26 feet), the Phoenix 1000 is a vehicle of formidable size. Yet despite its 1500-ton displacement, the submarine is quite streamlined. Given the significant waterplane area and ample internal volume, which allows for greater battery storage, the Phoenix 1000 yacht will out-perform smaller counterparts in surface speed, submerged speed and submerged endurance.

The large pressure hull diameter allows for very large acrylic viewports, making the undersea viewing capability truly extraordinary. The interior space, with the noted absence of structural bulkheads, provides for tremendous versatility in interior layout and space planning. And finally, the Phoenix 1000’s large size coupled with its integrated roll stabilization system makes surface transit quite comfortable in all but the worst conditions.

Flying Bridge

The uppermost level of the vessel is the flying bridge. This area is similar to its equivalent area on most yachts, with the exception of the fact that the materials selected are subject to immersion in water. Ample space exists for lounging, and cushions may be brought up from the area below. The flying bridge also houses the pressure-compensated radar radome, GPS antennae and satellite communications radome, as well as radio aerials, running lights, etc. A remote steering station is also available.

Luxurious interior of the Phoenix 1000 undersea superyacht

Luxurious interior of the Phoenix 1000 undersea superyacht

Deck Saloon

Immediately below the flying bridge and accessible through a large hydraulically operated hatch and a stairway, is the deck saloon. As proposed, this area would be composed of structural acrylic cylindrical sections 2.1 meters (7′) in diameter and 20 centimeters (8″) in thickness. The overall length of the deck saloon pressure hull would be 12 meters.

The deck saloon would have a comfortably appointed interior and would boast an incredible view for observation, both on the surface and when submerged. By fitting transparent sections into the deck of the flying bridge, a view above can be enjoyed as well.

In the forward portion of the saloon is the surface bridge. This area contains all the necessary control, monitoring and navigation equipment to operate the submarine in the surfaced condition. The captain has a hemispherical sector acrylic viewport immediately in front, with the transparent cylindrical walls to either side.

The aft portion of the saloon has a large acrylic window, providing a view astern that also acts as a large hydraulically operated hatch. A small automobile could be kept in the aft section if desired.

Superstructure

The superstructure itself is composed principally of aluminum (or FRP if the owner prefers), and it houses the deck saloon pressure vessel and also provides the structural base for the flying bridge. There is a large degree of latitude possible with regard to the styling of the structure, with the caveat that its hydrodynamic efficiency will have a significant effect on the submerged speed of the submarine.

Aft of the deck saloon is a covered space that can be either fully or partially enclosed. The greater the degree of closure to the after portion of the structure, the less turbulence and the more hydromdynamic efficiency. Hydraulically actuated after doors could be designed to open, allowing fresh air to circulate. The area would be excellent for covered, informal, deck-level dining.

Docking Minisub

Aft of the superstructure, or optionally, above the control cabin on the bow, is an area for a docking minisub. Utilizing a special docking collar, this vehicle is capable of leaving the Phoenix 1000 superyacht while submerged and making excursions down to 610 meters (2000 feet). With both top and bottom hatches, the minisub could also bring passengers from the surface to the submarine lying at depth. The minisub could be designed to hold between two and eight passengers, depending upon the owner’s preferences. Additionally, in the unlikely event of an emergency at depth, the minisub could be used to take passengers and crew to the surface.

Forward Control Room

The forward control room is entered from the main deck through a watertight, pressure-proof door. The control room has a 2.4 meter (8′) diameter hemispherical sector acrylic viewport forward and three 1.8 meter (6′) diameter viewports on either side, with the foremost pair angled slightly forward.

The control room contains all of the control and navigation equipment necessary to operate the submarine while submerged. The 8 meter x 4 meter (26′ x 13′) area contains sufficient space to fit comfortable lounge chairs for passenger observation while underway.

Main Passenger Areas

The main passenger area consists of two decks, each 31 meters (102′) long and 6 meters (20′) wide. The upper deck is accessed from one of two hatches, either from the deck saloon or from a hatch to the after portion of the superstructure. Two stairways, one in the center of the deck, the other in the after section, lead to the lower deck.

The upper deck is intended to provide space for an engineering workstation, a switch and contactor room, crew cabins and mess, as well as the galley. The forward portion, which ends at a bulkhead, is designed as a room of the owner’s choosing.

The main deck is situated such that the forward portion, with eight 1.8 meter (6′) diameter acrylic windows, contains the living and dining areas, while the section aft of the beam houses the owner’s stateroom and guest cabins. Five viewports, 90 centimeters (35″) in diameter, are situated on both port and starboard sides.

Below the passenger area is the battery compartment and bilge. A narrow manway allows access through the compartment for battery maintenance.

Engine Room

The engine room is accessed through doors at the after portion of both passenger decks. The space contains the majority of the equipment necessary for the submarine’s operation, including the main diesels, motor generators, drive systems, air compressors, hydraulic aggregates and life support systems. The upper level of the engine space provides access to the minisub, and in the stern section, to a diver lock-out chamber. The bottom level allows maintenance of the main engines and related components. Diver Lock-out Chamber

A spherical diver lock-out chamber, 2.4 meters (8′) in diameter is fitted above the shafts and attached to the aftermost section of the pressure hull. The chamber allows a diver to enter or exit the submarine from the area between the shafts at depths of up to 45 meters (150′). The chamber can be fitted with decompression capability if required.

More than 80% of the world’s oceans remain unexplored but discovering the depths might be easier than you think. A personal submarine lets you explore the underwater world like never before. Built to cater from one to six guests and tailored to fit the weight and height restrictions of a superyacht tender garage, adventure further with our edit of the best personal submarines for superyachts…

Triton 1000/2 MKII

Triton-1000/2-MKII-best-personal-submarines

New for 2019, Triton’s latest submersible is lesson in style. Weighing just 3000kg and standing 1.7m tall, the 1000/2 MKII is designed to comfortably fit in a superyacht toy garage. Perfect for exploring coral reefs or sunken ships, this two-person sub can dive down to 305m and power along the seabed at a top speed of four knots for up to 10 hours. It’s ideal for those looking to pilot their own submarine and Triton even provides in-house training. Air conditioning and humidity control are an added bonus.

U-Boat Worx HiPer Sub 2

u-boat-worx-hiper-sub 2-best-personal-submarines

Dubbed the “ultimate sports submarine”, the HiPer Sub has a need for speed. It can travel at up to six knots and even perform underwater “hydrobatics”. It can roll, loop-the-loop, perform steep turns and vertical ascents and descents. With a racing-red paint job, the HiPer sub can carry a pilot and passenger to a depth of 100m for up to six hours. A fighter jet-style joystick allows for easy manoeuvrability and both occupants can take control without having to switch seats. Weighing 2500kg with a height of 1.46m, it’s perfect for those with room to spare onboard. And, for the first time ever, the HiPer Sub can be transported on a car trailer. This model is also available in a four-person layout.

Seamagine Aurora-3C

seamagine-aurora-3C-best-personal-submarines-for-superyachts

This three-person submarine is capable of diving to 457m and offers some clever onboard extras. The Aurora-3C is able to tilt at surface, providing a stable platform for boarding when stepping across from a superyacht. And by moving the hatch away from the top of the window and into a separate compartment, the model offers a greater field of view. The submarine’s low height and even lower hoist point makes this submersible ideal for setup in confined spaces – say a superyacht tender garage – without compromising on comfort, practicality, and performance. The Aurora-3C also offers extras including a robotic arm, HD video systems and a fly-out rover with HD camera. You can even customise the colour.

Project Neptune

project-neptune-best-personal-submarines-for-superyachts

Announced at the Monaco Yacht Show 2017, Project Neptune is the result of a collaboration between submarine specialist Triton and British car marque Aston Martin.

U-Boat Worx Super Yacht Sub 3

u-boat-worx-super-yacht-sub-3-best-personal-submarines

Seamagine Aurora-6S

seamagine-aurora-6s-best-personal-submarines

GSE Trieste VAS 525/60

GSE-trieste-VAS-525/60-best-personal-submarines

The dream of living beneath the waves in your very own yellow submarine can be a reality with the VAS 525/60. Not brand new, but enviably proven, the adventure-ready sub is built by Italy’s GSE Trieste to military standards and has been extensively tested on commercial vessels. Five passengers can gaze out of the large forward and side portholes, while HD video cameras mounted on the exterior capture the scene, and forward-facing 3,200 lumen underwater lights illuminate the depths or the inky night as the VAS descends to 160m for up to eight hours.

Specifically, our Aurora 100 Series offers a range capable of carrying between three to seven passengers, with the maximum depth rating varying from 100 meters to 2,300 meters depending on the number of passengers accommodated.

Within this series, a remarkable feature is the exceptionally large acrylic window, which can be configured to offer additional seating for passengers or augment the submersible's deep diving capacity. Renowned for its durability, unparalleled reliability, and integration of cutting-edge scientific tools, this model empowers you to personalize your private submarine according to your preferences. Yes, the purchase of a personal submarine is entirely feasible. Personal Submarines: Luxury in the Deep

  • By Kim Kavin
  • Updated: September 23, 2019

air bubbles underwater

Being the first person to see something is an experience that can surpass all others, create exhilaration that borders on euphoria and, maybe most important, win every dinner-party conversation for a decade. Craig Barnett, the sales-and-marketing manager for Triton, says the desire to have that kind of experience is a key reason why so many yacht owners want personal submarines.

“Once you have your Ferrari and your yacht and your private jet, and you’ve traveled the world, it’s all about augmenting your reality,” he says. “How can you enhance your experience? With a yacht, you’re scratching the surface of the sea. With a sub, you’re discovering a whole new level.”

In fact, according to insiders at Triton as well as U-Boat Worx, yachtsmen are embracing more than just the spirit of adventure. They’re ordering semicustom and custom submarines the same way they look beyond production yachts to custom builds, wanting to have a half-dozen or more friends and family members underwater with them, as well as fineries that range from leather interiors and Bluetooth sound systems to Champagne chillers and more.

submarine next to underwater airplane wreckage

U-Boat Worx alone is now offering 100 options on its various sub models, and Triton is seeing yacht owners outfit subs in increasingly interesting ways. Hulls No. 9 and 10 are now in build of the Triton 3300/3, which is the company’s most popular model, able to dive with three people (including the pilot) to 3,300 feet. “You can fit them out with extra cameras and all that stuff for documentary filmmaking,” Barnett says. “You can load them up with scientific instrumentation. We have one owner who uses it for archaeology and salvage. They’ve been practical and useful. Now, in the past 18 months, we did the concept and engineering with Aston Martin to take the sub into the serious luxury realm. It’s not just a fanciful idea. We intend to build them. That will happen.”

Don Walsh watching dive progress

The rise in popularity of submarines is coinciding with increased interest in expedition and support yachts, which clients and yacht builders have been embracing for a number of years now. The current generation of yachtsmen is looking beyond ports such as St. Barth’s and Monaco; they want the ability to cruise far, far beyond the traditional itineraries that their parents enjoyed in the Caribbean and Mediterranean. About 100 explorer yachts of at least 80 feet length overall are in build today, Barnett says, and in May, the Monaco Yacht Club hosted the first conference focused on expedition-style yachting. Charter clients also are looking for go-farther opportunities, such as spending a week aboard the 254-foot expedition yacht Legend in Antarctica, where charters come with a submarine.

Victor Vescovo portrait

Victor Vescovo

In April, as part of the Five Deeps Expedition to reach the deepest points in each of the five oceans, Victor Vescovo (above) became the person who has dived the deepest in human history. He was aboard a Triton submarine specially built for the cause, one that—unlike some previous specialty subs—could be used like the space shuttle, going down and up and back down again to explore. “It opens up a whole other level,” says Craig Barnett, sales-and-marketing manager for Triton. “That sub could dive every day for as long as we had supplies, provisions and a weather window.” And with the Five Deeps Expedition scheduled to conclude this year, the sub is already on the brokerage market, ready for a new owner to take possession as early as September. The asking price, Barnett says, is $48.9 million, which includes the 223-foot research vessel the sub loads onto for transport. Meanwhile, Triton is using its R&D knowledge from the project to inform new models. “We made some major breakthroughs,” Barnett says, “and that will affect everything we do in the future.”

“It’s such a big and growing sector,” Barnett says. Today’s yachtsmen “want to do the Northwest Passage, go to remote areas in the ice, have exploration and adventure, and with that desire for unique experiences comes the submersibles.”

As consumer demand for private subs has grown, so has the variety of subs available and the options for designing and outfitting them. U-Boat Worx offers 20 models within five series, while Triton offers nearly a dozen models within three series. Both companies have lighter-weight models designed specifically for crane loading on and off superyachts or support vessels.

render of a submarine stored in a yacht

And while yacht owners a decade ago thought of a personal sub as a utilitarian toy that came off a production line, today’s owners are thinking about them more in the ways they think about custom-built tenders.

“You want a continuity of experience between the yacht and the submersible,” Barnett says. “We can of course paint the exterior any color you want, and now we can work with the interior designer of your yacht. If you want white, carbon fiber and sporty, we can do that. If you want wood and classic with matching leathers, we can do it that way. It’s the same as with outfitting a luxury tender.”

Costs for anything customized of course come in a range, and the same is true of today’s submarines. Triton’s entry-level model goes for $2.7 million, while its largest sub—a seven-seater—retails for $5.25 million.

Triton’s 1650/3LP submarine

Barnett says yacht owners see those prices as being in line with, say, a customized helicopter that lands on the bow.

In fact, he says, the way subs are discussed aboard yachts could soon rival the way owners talk about their onboard choppers: “I can see submersibles potentially becoming as popular on yachts as helicopters. Maybe not every yacht has one, but every yacht gets built with the capability to have one on board. You would order your helicopter, and then order your submarine.”

HiPer Sub from U-Boat Worx

The Rise of Submarines Aboard Yachts

2008 J.D. Ducanes, captain of the 164-foot Trinity Mine Games, trains on a Triton 1000/2 (carrying two people to 1,000 feet). It becomes the first private submarine available to guests aboard a charter yacht.

2012 Triton receives an order to build its third 3300/3 (carrying three people to 3,300 feet) for use on a superyacht, within a few months of the first 3300/3 doing its maiden dive off Grand Bahama.

2019 With explorer yachts surging in popularity, Dutch yacht builder Oceanco unveils a 345-foot concept design with room for not one, but two submarines, along with a helicopter and a land vehicle.

Going Deep: Personal Submersibles

Working on board a yacht revolves around life on top of the ocean, but with submersibles rising in popularity, some crew have the chance to work in the depths of the blue, too..

Although personal submersibles are now catching the eyes of yacht owners around the world, they weren’t always a trusted addition to a yacht’s toy box. Patrick Lahey, CEO and co-founder of Triton Submarines , faced hesitancy and skepticism when he first introduced submersibles to the yachting world.

“The most critically important development was attracting an individual in the form of Chris Cline, who took a chance that we weren’t crazy and gave us an opportunity to build our first sub,” Lahey said.

The submersible built for Cline’s vessel Mine Games showed the possibilities and wonders of the underwater experience to Cline, who shared his experiences with others in the yachting industry.

“Suddenly it wasn’t just me talking about how wonderful it would be to have a sub on a yacht, you had an individual and owner that had one of these things and was speaking enthusiastically about the extraordinary experiences that they were having with it,” Lahey said.

personal submarine yacht

As Triton helped open another dimension for the yachting industry to explore, many began to share the wanderlust with the depths of the ocean that Lahey has. Documentaries like Blue Planet II, Aliens of the Deep, and Galapagos, all created with the help of Triton Submarines, suddenly became live experiences – and yacht owners aren’t the only ones experiencing them.

Adding underwater exploration revolutionized the yachting experience, and it also changed many of the responsibilities captains, engineers, and crew have. A positive personal submersible experience can only be successful with properly trained operators, and many yacht owners look to their own crew to become specialized in the field.

Triton Submarines offers a comprehensive training program with every purchase of a Triton sub. Lahey’s training program doesn’t only teach captains and crew how to operate a sub, but it immerses them in the building of the sub as well. Participants work with the engineers creating the machine they’ll soon operate, learning how it works and what makes it tick.

“We teach them everything, how to rebuild a thruster, how to fix or rebuild a valve, and all those skills that will be helpful to them in the field when they’re eventually discharged with the responsibility of operating and maintaining that sub,” Lahey said. “The idea is to bring their knowledge and confidence level to a point where they’re self-contained and they can look after their own sub.”

Once crew have been certified to operate subs, the location, conditions and planning for an expedition are important as well. Some owners rely on companies like SubMerge to help them with this.

SubMerge works with yacht owners and crew to plan and manage private leisure submersible expeditions. Ofer Ketter, a longtime submersible pilot and the president of SubMerge, helps provide everything needed to make these expeditions successful. Ketter’s company helps guide crew through issues like using tenders for surface support and towing, but it also provides 3-D underwater maps of areas to help find interesting dive sites.

“There’s a lot of aspects around the actual operation, and when we have guests we want to give them the perfect experience and make it safe,” Ketter said. “And have the crew well-trained in the different ‘what if’ scenarios.”

The different ‘what if’ scenarios Ketter mentions are part of SubMerge’s quest to keep every expedition as safe as possible. Ketter recommends that his company get on board at least a week before the expedition so that they can run through the worst-case scenarios and practice the correct responses. Some of these might include a storm arriving before a submersible is set to emerge, heavy boat traffic around a submersible’s emerge point, or the proper response to a fire occurring in the submersible.

“The ideal scenario is to set aside time so that the entire ship is now working towards that submarine,” Ketter said. “You don’t want to be in a situation where now the owner is on board and he’s like ‘Okay I’m ready to go diving in the sub,’ and (the crew) is like ‘Wait, so who does what?’”

personal submarine yacht

Lahey and Triton Submarines also put safety above all, owning a spotless safety track record.

“Those of us who build subs that are certified, classed if you will, accredited, enjoy a 50-year track record of perfect safety,” Lahey said. “That’s an enviable record and a record that doesn’t exist in any other form of transportation.”

Many questioned the safety of submersibles after OceanGate’s Titan submersible tragedy in June, but Lahey believes the accredited manufacturers of submersibles should not be grouped in with the creators of the Titan.

“Unfortunately, the reality is that people just don’t know enough about this type of equipment to differentiate between an experimental abomination like the OceanGate craft and the beautifully designed, thoughtfully engineered, and carefully manufactured subs that legitimate builders in our world produce,” Lahey said. “I think it’s very important that we establish the distinction between that experimental craft that should have never carried human beings – it was not fit for human occupancy – from the type of machinery that we’re talking about putting on yachts that Triton produces.”

If the industry uses accredited submersibles that meet the classification society standard, they can be used in absolute confidence and in total safety, Lahey said.

“Submersibles are magical machines, they transport you to what I consider to be the most beautiful part of our planet, and I don’t want people to be afraid of them,” Lahey said. “But I think we have to insist on accreditation, we have to insist on certification, and if we do, we can continue to enjoy this wonderful track record of absolute safety.”

The two person Nemo by UBoat Worx opens up a new personal submarine category for owners

In the small but exclusive world of personal submarines, there are two brands: U-Boat Worx and Triton . The two go mano a mano for the most part, offering a range of subs for different missions, numbers of passengers and seat layouts. Both brands have their fans, unique selling points and recognizable looks. They also both share the James-Bond-cool factor of being able to take you way below the ocean’s surface to experience what was previously accessible only to professional submariners.

But the price tags, size and weight of the underwater craft have kept most potential buyers away from ownership. You have to be a billionaire and own a very large superyacht.

Until now. U-Boat Worx ’s new Nemo is creating a fresh niche, first by designing a smaller sub that’s owner operated, and secondly by dropping the price to just over a million dollars—or at least half the price of any other personal submersible on the water.

The two person Nemo by UBoat Worx opens up a new personal submarine category for owners

Nemo was designed for simple operation, so the first buyers all plan to pilot their own mini-subs.  Courtesy U-Boat Worx

Nemo made its media debut last week in Curacao, where the Dutch manufacturer has a training and service facility for the Caribbean.

“This will be the first series production of a submersible,” U-Boat Worx’s Roy Heijdra, told Robb Report. “The first 10 of the line have already been sold.” The builder is ramping up production to fulfill what it expects to be healthy demand for Nemo, which will be available in one- or two-seat models.

Nemo will be compact, with roughly the same footprint as two jet skis. Heijdra says that the lower price and smaller size make it accessible to more than “the rich and famous,” because it’ll fit on smaller yachts, say above 100 feet in length, and its 5,500-pound weight can be towed, though you’ll need a serious truck.

U-Boat Worx came up with the concept to build a sub-compact sub 15 years ago to “make the ocean accessible to everyone,” but Heijdra says the world wasn’t ready for the idea. “Yacht owners wanted subs that could go much deeper than anything on the market at the time,” he says. “But now we’ve developed to the point now where we can make a relatively affordable submersible for a much broader audience.”

“Relatively affordable” is the key phrase here. The one-seat Nemo retails for about $1.02 million, while the two-seater is closer to $1.1 million. That’s obviously not cheap, but it’s a lot less expensive than anything else on the water. White is the standard exterior, but owners can custom-color their own subs for about $35,000. Other options include sonar, a manipulator arm, and a navigation package, which provides GPS coordinates to the helm console. The standard package includes two spotlights and floodlights, but owners can add extras for cutting through murky waters.

The owners who have purchased the first Nemos will operate the submersibles themselves, as opposed to having their yacht crew serve as drivers.

The 330-foot depth means that the submarine can explore wrecks that are too far down for recreational divers to reach.  Courtesy U-Boat Worx

The Nemo in Curacao looked cute and techy from the exterior, with its large acrylic sphere and two seats. It’s capable of diving to 330 feet, maneuvered by four electric thrusters—two vertical and two horizontal—with an average speed of 3 knots. That’s not super fast, but who wants to be in a hurry when you’re exploring a wreck or coral reef?

Even though U-Boat Worx simplified Nemo to keep costs down, the interior retains a luxurious look, with black trim and leather seats, and small LCD screens for navigation. “We streamlined the engineering to make it super easy to operate,” says Heijdra. “We followed the helicopter world when it comes to maintenance, with digital logs that are sent directly to a server so we know when it’s time to service it.”

Nemo will have eight hours of driving time, or staying submerged, on a normal day’s dive. The design isn’t as technical as some of U-Boat Worx’s larger, deeper-diving research subs. But one of the options is an exterior camera, so the craft can record marine life for research purposes.

For those worried about claustrophobia, the transparent dome should ease fears. Nemo also has air conditioning and heating to keep the interior comfortable in different water environments. It’s designed to dive in both tropical and arctic waters.

“We call it a ‘toy’ but it’s a very serious machine,” says Heijdra.

And a whole lot of fun.
