10 Best Sailboats for a Fun Lake Day

Table of Contents

Sailing on lakes can be fun, especially if the wind is steady and the water is relatively flat. Although a 50-foot sailboat wouldn’t go amiss on Lake Superior, most lakes are perfect for smaller, more lightweight boats.

For inland waterways, it’s best to find compact sailboats under 30 feet with a centerboard or swing keel so they can be trailed from one lake to another. A tabernacle or collapsible mast that folds or is removable also comes in handy.

Finally, there’s a difference between a small open sailboat for day outings and one with a bunk and a head (toilet) so you can camp aboard for the weekend. Let’s look at a mix of 10 older and newer boats perfect for lake sailing.

Where To Sail In Arizona

Where to Sail in Arizona | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

June 15, 2022

Arizona offers excellent inland lake and river sailing all around the state. Over a dozen big lakes in Arizona are open to sailboats.

The best places to sail in Arizona are all lakes, and many of them are artificial. These are Lake Havasu, Lake Powell, Alamo Lake, Tempe Town Lake, Lake Mohave, Saguaro Lake, Roosevelt Lake, and Lake Pleasant. Some of these lakes can accommodate large boats, and all have places to tie up.

In this article, we'll cover eight of the best places to sail in Arizona. We'll go over the specifics of each location, along with the best type of vessel to sail there. Finally, we'll cover what kind of accommodations, atmosphere, and local attractions to expect at each location.

We sourced the information for this article from Arizona-based sailing communities, state guides, and State Park information pages. We also studied the depth, dimensions, and average weather conditions of each location to determine the best types of sailboats to use there.

Table of contents

‍ Is Arizona a Good Place to Sail?

Though Arizona has no ocean access, the state is actually one of the best inland places to sail in the country. The warm weather and relatively calm convective atmosphere over Arizona make it a safe and stable place to sail on lakes and rivers.

Sailing in Arizona is highly affordable as well, and many of the larger Lakes have reasonably priced marinas, along with places to beach and anchor.

What Kind of Sailboat is Best for Arizona?

Arizona has a unique set of characteristics that make it both a great and challenging place to sail. As far as sailboats are concerned, size is the greatest limiting factor. There simply isn't enough space in many Arizona waterways for traditional ocean-going sailboats.

That's not to say you can't use 25 or 30-foot sailboats in Arizona. You can, but your options for sailing will be limited. The ideal size for a sailboat in Arizona is between 15 and 25 feet in length. Shoal draft sailboats, such as sharpies, are very common.

Vessels with centerboards and swing keels can take advantage of the beaches and shallow water, and they can be towed and stored on land when necessary. A modern pocket cruiser setup offers the most benefits, as the cabin offers protection from the hot summer sun.

Best Arizona Lakes for Sailboats

Although Arizona is home to many creeks and rivers, lakes provide the best sailing experience overall. There are numerous lakes in Arizona, but only a few of them are ideal for sailing in most conditions. Here are the best places to sail in Arizona.

1. Lake Havasu

Lake Havasu is one of the most well-known lakes in Arizona. This beautiful Lake, which is located near Phoenix, is one of the busiest and most exciting locations in the region. Each year, hundreds of boats descend on its picturesque beaches and cut across its water.

If you don't mind traffic, sailing on Lake Havasu and finding a beach to stop for the evening can be a very fun time. During the offseason, the lake is quiet and an excellent place to sail a small boat. There are several places to dock on the shores of the lake, along with numerous restaurants, bars, and shops.

Sailing is a popular activity on Lake Havasu. Every year, dozens of small cabin sailboats ‘invade’ the lake for the annual Lake Havasu Pocket Cruiser Convention. Larger boats are also found on Lake Havasu, both under sail and power. Hanging out around Lake Havasu seems like a party 24/7, especially during the summer.

2. Lake Powell

If you're looking for something more remote, it doesn't get much better than Lake Powell. The scenery that surrounds Lake Powell is breathtaking, as the lake is surrounded by beautiful desert rock formations like none other in the world.

Lake Powell is also the largest lake in Arizona and an excellent place to drop a boat in the water. There's very little traffic on Lake Powell (at least when compared to Lake Havasu), which is partially due to its remote location. There's very little construction around the lake, which leaves it in a pristine natural state.

Getting a boat into Lake Powell is a little more challenging than some other locations can be, so the lake has the capacity to handle larger sailboats. The lake is an excellent location for camping. Once you're in the water, it won't take long to find a secluded river or cove to drop anchor in and absorb the surroundings.

3. Alamo Lake

Alamo Lake is a beautiful and remote desert lake situated behind a dam. The area is popular with campers, and numerous RV parks campsites dot the shoreline. Like Lake Powell, Alamo Lake is remote and a bit off the beaten path. As a result, it usually isn't crowded, and it makes for great summer sailing.

Due to the dam and the relatively small size of the lake, you're limited by the size of your sailboat. The area is best suited for smaller open-top sailboats under 16 feet in length. That said, you can still have plenty of fun on Alamo Lake in an open-top boat. Like much of Arizona, you can expect pleasant weather in the evenings in high heat during the day.

Sailboat racing is a popular activity on Alamo Lake, and races are held frequently. It's not uncommon to see a line of Sunfish or Lasers lined up and ready for the regatta. It's best to check the condition of the lake before arriving, as the water level and quality varies throughout the year. Also, don't forget to bring your fishing rod.

4. Tempe Town Lake

Tempe Town Lake is one of the most popular places to sail in Arizona. The lake is limited to small, open top-boats and pocket cruisers, but you're sure to find a sailboat or two on the water during the summer. Tempe Town Lake it's not only convenient, but it's a highly controlled environment that's easy to learn on. It's a great place to go for low-stress cruising.

Tempe Town Lake is one of the few places in Arizona that frequently offers sailing lessons, and it's a highly-respected place to learn to sail. Lessons are available in small and larger open boats, and they're open to kids and adults. The lake is frequented by boaters of all types who live in the Tempe area.

Tempe Town Lake runs alongside apartment buildings, offices, and a highway, so it's definitely not remote. In fact, it resembles a lagoon more than a lake. That said, it's highly convenient for the locals and a great place to spend the summer on the water. Sailboat racing and rowing are also coming to Tempe Town Lake, and events are held regularly.

5. Lake Mohave

Lake Mohave is one of the largest sailing destinations in Arizona, and it boasts unique desert scenery. There's a marina on the lake that can handle medium-sized boats, along with a launch ramp and parking.

Powerboats dominate the marina at Lake Mohave, but a sailboat can occasionally be spotted quietly cruising or on the expansive lake. Lake Mohave, like Alamo Lake, is an artificial Lake created by a dam on the Colorado River, and the lake borders Nevada.

It's only four miles wide at its widest point, but it's over 60 miles long. This leaves plenty of room for sailing and an almost unlimited shoreline. Far up the river, boats can cruise close to the base of Hoover Dam, which is a popular cruising destination for suitable craft.

6. Saguaro Lake

Saguaro Lake, named after the iconic Arizona cactus, is one of the deepest lakes in Arizona. Also created by a dan, this long artificial lake is an excellent place to drop a sailboat in the water. Due to its 100-foot depth, it can accommodate larger boats with deeper drafts and many other lakes in Arizona.

Iconic Saguaro cactuses can actually be seen from the water, and they really empathize the desert atmosphere of the lake. The clear and crystal blue water also enhances the scenery at this picturesque artificial Lake. Lake Saguaro also features a well-maintained marina, which is popular with houseboats and powerboats of all types.

Though sailboats aren't the most common sight at Saguaro Lake, they do appear from time to time when the wind conditions are favorable. Small open-top sailboats in pocket cruisers are the most common sight on Lake Saguaro, and occasionally larger both appear as well.

7. Roosevelt Lake

Roosevelt Lake offers (arguably) some of the best sailing in Arizona. The lake, created in the early 20th century by the iconic Roosevelt Dam, is expansive, empty, and deep. The lake is popular with powerboats and water skiers, but also some very large sailboats of 30 feet or longer.

The lake is a popular destination for people in the Tucson area, and it features full-service marinas and dry boat storage. Along with places to dock, there are also anchorages scattered around the lake. The weather around Roosevelt Lake is usually excellent, and it's a great place to hang out during the warmer seasons.

Sailboats are quite common in Roosevelt Lake, and size usually isn't an issue. You may occasionally run into a ski boat wake, but the traffic is spread out and generally not an issue. The weather around Roosevelt Lake is usually great for sailing, and there's usually sufficient wind around the lake to get underway.

8. Lake Pleasant

Lake Pleasant is a very nice place to sell in Arizona, and it's likely one of the most popular sailing areas in the state. Lake Pleasant is home to the Lake Pleasant Sailing Club, which is a local community that offers training, regattas, and a friendly community of sailors based in the area.

Like Roosevelt Lake, Lake Pleasant can accommodate larger sailboats that are more commonly found in coastal and offshore regions. Winds are quite favorable, but the occasional hillside dead spot can slow you down. Lake Pleasant offers full-size sailboat rentals, including both of us 25 feet in length. The area is large, and the water is deep, and a full-size launch ramp means that you can watch virtually anything in the water.

It's common to see multiple sailboats tacking up and down the lake at any given time. Still, traffic is usually light compared to other destinations. Sailing lessons are also available on Lake Pleasant in multiple types of sailboats. The Lake Pleasant Marina is one of the largest and best-kept in Arizona, and it's home to numerous sailboats, powerboats, and houseboats.

Sailing on Lake Michigan: Travel Guide

sailing on lake michigan

An uncommon combination of freshwater lake and ocean-style cruising, the Great Lakes offer some of the most interesting sailing anywhere. Among the five lakes, 300-mile long Lake Michigan is perfect for urban gunkholing, small bay anchoring and boisterous big water sailing.

Third largest in terms of surface area (22,300 square miles), Lake Michigan is bordered by four states and stretches from Gary, Indiana, past Chicago and Milwaukee north to the Straits of Mackinac. Its eastern shore is dotted with state parks and the water is clear and deep blue, which comes as a surprise to some.

Places of Interest

With over 1,600 miles of coastline to explore, you can always find a new adventure. Historic lighthouses, sandy beaches, plentiful secluded anchorages as well as waterfront villages can occupy a sailor all summer long.

Popular sailing destinations on Lake Michigan include...

  • The well-protected Grand Traverse Bay , where the water is calm regardless of what Lake Michigan is cooking up on the outside. The area has a healthy wine scene and nearby eclectic Harbor Springs is a destination for well-to-do visitors. The town of Charlevoix is bisected by a canal that leads to Round Pond and Lake Charlevoix beyond. For the literary-minded this area was the childhood home of Ernest Hemmingway so you’ll find lots of references to the author and his early love of boating and hunting.
  • Mackinac Island in the north is a step back in time where cars aren’t allowed and transport is by foot, bike, horse and carriage. Reservations at the island’s only marina should be made well in advance as it gets crowded in summer. You can stroll Main Street with its charming eateries and galleries or hike up to Fort Mackinac that dates back to the Revolutionary War.
  • Remote Beaver Island is the antithesis to touristy venues. You can visit the municipal dock, historical society and toy museum and then enjoy dinner at the Stoney Acres Bar. The 30-nautical-mile crossing from the mainland that it takes to get to Beaver Island can provide a roiling sail so check the weather because 30 knots of wind isn’t uncommon in the area.
  • Finally, there’s much to explore in Door County, Wisconsin on Lake Michigan’s western shore including the June Lighthouse Festival and 4th of July fireworks in Egg Harbor or ongoing activities in Sturgeon Bay. A big summer draw is parties like the Sister Bay Marina Fest. Harbor hopping in this area is exceptionally picturesque and can keep a boater busy for two weeks.

Events to Enjoy

Summertime brings multitudes of activities including art, wine and live music festivals but perhaps the most renowned of all local sailing events is the Chicago Yacht Club’s Chicago to Mackinac Race also known as “The Mac.” First run in 1898, the 333-mile race takes place in July and is flanked by events before and after.

Other notable events include the Playpen boat party that often entices 800+ vessels and the Chicago Air & Water show in August.

lake michigan sailing guide

What to Watch Out For

Lake Michigan runs in a north/south direction and with 300 miles of fetch, serious waves can form in a northerly wind and then pile up near Chicago. Freshwater is less dense than saltwater and tends to form steeper waves that can feel like walls when you’re pounding to weather. Also, although you can enjoy a five-month sailing season here, it tends to get cold on the water especially at night. Therefore, it’s imperative to check the weather before departure and dress appropriately.

A Gateway South

You can reel off the miles and explore all of Lake Michigan or you can stay around Chicago for a bit of urban cruising over a long weekend. If you’re particularly adventurous, you’ll note that southern Lake Michigan opens into the Mississippi River. Boaters doing the Great Loop (a circumnavigation of the eastern United States) find they can exit Lake Michigan and continue down river all the way to the Caribbean.

The season is short on the Great Lakes so summer is packed with things to do on the water and off. If you don’t have a boat of your own, there are numerous charter companies in Chicago and along the lake’s eastern shore so there’s always a way to get out on the water.

Our Guests Have Excellent Experiences on our Charters!

Please allow me a moment to thank Superior Charters. Our family has just completed a five day charter aboard Liberty. Sailing Liberty was everything we hoped it would be. The safety equipment, navigational aids. B&G electronics, equipped galley, deck grill, and numerous other additions aboard this beautiful Lagoon 40 did not disappoint. Our expectations were high, and Lake Superior's Apostles Islands exceeded with abundant beauty and natural wonder. Last, but not least, was Superior Charters staff. Cara, Alec, and Bravo were consummate professionals. You are blessed to have them on your Team. Thank you for enabling an unforgettable memory.

We have been chartering with Superior Charters for several years. As before we had a great experience with the team. The boat was ready on time and in great shape. We moved up to a larger boat this year and did a short checkout sail with Dave. He was very helpful and made the process a snap. Sailing the Apostles is a fantastic experience.

We have chartered with Superior Charters for the last three years and have known Cindy Alpha and Cindy Bravo for a long time. Superior Charters is a first class organization with first class people running it. If you want to enjoy sailing, learn to sail or just take a sailboat ride, Superior Charters is the way to go. First class all the way.

Had a wonderful experience with Superior Charters...Clean, modern yacht; easy check-in and check-out; nice people. I will definitely charter here again - probably next month!

Our experience with Superior was top notch. Everything was perfect, from initial phone discussions to figure out what would be best for us (novices), to the friendly staff, to the clean boat, to the simple check in and check out process.

Just finished my fifth charter with Superior a little over a week ago. This is a well run, professional charter company. The boats have always been in good shape. Friendly. Reliable. Superior's check-out captains are reliable and ready to answer any of your questions.

Our boat was in excellent condition. The staff was professional. Booking the boat and trip was easy and their communication was excellent. They have an unusually large fleet of boats to choose from and they are all fairly new. Giving you the option to clean the boat yourself to save money is nice. If you are looking to charter a nice boat this place is a no brainer.

We chartered two sailboats from Superior Charters for our Wedding Reception!!! Our friends and family got to experience going out into the islands on sailboats, something me and my new husband love doing. Everyone at Superior Charters was AMAZING in helping our dream wedding come true. Thanks to their dedicated maintenance and cleaning staff the boats are perfect, and if something isn't right, they always go out of their way to fix any issues. They helped us figure out so many of the detailed logistics and also worked with us on timing and schedule to make for a wonderful experience for our guests. Our wedding day was absolutely perfect! THANKS SUPERIOR CHARTERS :)

We did a 3 night charter sail with Captain Christine. It was everything I hoped it to be and more! We had never been sailing so were not sure what to expect. Christine was patient with our lack of knowledge and let us be involved as much or as little as we wanted with the sailing experience. We had all types of weather and made the best of them all. The ability to pull up to an island and row up to the dock and hike was perfect along with jumping off the back of the boat into the water for a swim!!! It's the perfect social distancing trip. I can't say enough about it - we will definitely be back.

The ideal sailboat size will depend on how many people you plan to have on board and how long you’ll be spending on your boat. As a standard sailboat for Lake Michigan, you should ideally look at 27-feet or longer. Something like a Catalina 30 is a great choice for the Great Lakes. Ideally, you’re not looking for anything too big and a boat with a shallow draft to cope with shallower regions on the lakes.

sailboat on lake

Lake Michigan is a 300 mile (494km) long freshwater lake. It is the third largest of the Great Lakes, with a surface area of 22,300 square miles or 58,000 km squared.

You can sail on Lake Michigan from mid-May to mid-October. Generally, the water temperature stays low until late June and early July. As a result of midwest weather patterns, the winds get less predictable during August and early September.

Squalls tend to be common and can present a challenge to smaller boats. The wind pattern and velocity on Lake Michigan can also get quite high which can lead to big waves. The changeability of the conditions means a storm can quickly roll in before calming just a few hours later. Summer thunderstorms can be particularly dangerous and are difficult to predict.

It is easy to get hold of detailed local forecasts for wind and weather so use them to judge when it’s best to go out. The winds on Lake Michigan are usually predictable well in advance so they’re easy enough to avoid. That being said, it’s wise to stick to the coast until you’re confident you have a good understanding of the conditions as they can change quickly. Common sense is your best guide.

sailboat on lake

Sailing on Lake Michigan is nicest when the temperature starts to climb but before the warmer temperatures start to unsettle the weather patterns. This means that the best time to sail is around mid-summer, between June and July.

Whatever time of year you sail on Lake Michigan, be prepared to have some days off the water. It’s not unusual to be hit by bad weather even during the summer months. Another thing to bear in mind is that it tends to get cold on the water at night so make sure you have cold weather gear with you.

The Great Lakes are considered to be non-tidal but nonetheless, Lake Michigan does have fluctuations in its water levels. There are twice daily tides on Lake Michigan of approximately 0.5 to 1.5 inches (around 1 to 4 cm).

Such fluctuations caused by the gravitational pull of the sun and moon have very little effect when compared with the changes caused by wind and air pressure, however. These create the most noticeable shifts in the level of Lake Michigan.

Similarly, the Bay of Green Bay on Lake Michigan experiences the most significant tidal shifts thanks to the local geography. In this region, levels on Lake Michigan can fluctuate up to 4 inches (approximately 10 cm)

The wave heights on Lake Michigan vary significantly according to the wind. As Lake Michigan is not open ocean, its wave heights are limited by the fetch. The highest waves on Lake Michigan are around 20-25 feet in height, which is about 6-7.5 meters. 20 foot waves are generally rare but not unheard of.

As the temperatures on Lake Michigan can stay cool until mid-summer, it’s a good idea to have layers of wind and cold protection with you. Even when the water begins to warm, it stays cold beneath the surface so consider wearing a wetsuit.

Thermal and fleece layers will also provide you with good insulation even when wet. You may will also need waterproof clothing in case you get caught in a thunderstorm (though these are best avoided!) and lifejackets.

If you’re sailing on Lake Michigan, it is not uncommon to have flies bothering you, some of which bite. With this in mind, you might want to opt for long sleeves and long trousers in lighter colors to avoid being bitten. Alternatively, you could use insect repellant and reapply often.

Lake Michigan is a stunning sailing destination but it’s not without its hazards. The shifting wind and water conditions can quickly catch you off guard. It’s not uncommon for sailors to be heaved overboard. Make sure all life jackets and wet suits are fitted with reflective tapes and you have whistles and flares.

Though water levels in Lake Michigan are rising, the water has also been known to recede to record low levels in recent decades. Check the current water levels before you go out and be aware of submerged objects close to the surface at low water levels.

You also need to be vigilant, even when sailing in good weather, as squalls can start quickly. If you’re going to be sailing at night, it is vital to have a powerful night light on board in order to be seen from a distance by other vessels, especially in fog, and to aid navigation.

Lastly, there will be ships on Lake Michigan that are far larger than your sailboat. Pay attention to your surroundings, especially on commercial shipping routes.

Sailing across Lake Michigan can involve a huge range of different routes, either going offshore or along the coast

Chicago and New Buffalo are situated almost directly opposite one another. To sail directly across Lake Michigan, from Chicago to New Buffalo, is a distance of approximately 40 nautical miles straight sailing. The journey can take between 2-5 hours. The exact time will depend on the conditions on the lake and the speed of your sailboat.

Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are joined by a 5 mile wide (8 km) channel known as the Straits of Mackinac. Lake Huron is 206 miles long and 183 miles wide with an average depth of 195 ft.

To get to Lake Huron from Lake Michigan, you will pass under The Mackinac Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. You will also sail past The Beavers - a collection of islands in the north of Lake Michigan - and Mackinac Island. Both are brilliant stopping points on your journey!

To sail from Chicago on Lake Michigan to Alpena on Lake Huron, the route is approximately 440 nautical miles. At a steady rate of 8 knots, the route would take roughly 2-3 days to complete.

Sailing from Chicago to Detroit involves crossing from Lake Michigan into Lake Huron. There is also the added challenge of sailing down the St Clair River, leaving Port Huron and making the way to Walpole Island, coming out into Lake St Clair.

Detroit lies across the lake and a short way down the Detroit River. It is approximately 630 nautical miles from Chicago to Detroit.

If you’re sailing to the Gulf of Mexico, the Mississippi River is the most sensible route for exiting the Great Lakes. You’ll sail downstream from southern Lake Michigan via the Chicago River, entering the Des Plaines River.

The Illinois River will take you to the Mississippi River, just north of St. Louis, Missouri. You can choose to stay on the Mississippi River, going south past Memphis, Tennessee and Greenville Mississippi. This route takes you out near New Orleans, Louisiana.

Alternatively, a more popular route is to go from the Mississippi River, up the Ohio River and to the Tennessee River, coming back down in a loop through the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, or the Ten-Tom Waterway. The Ten-Tom Waterway is a nice inland water route and this journey is very well travelled, forming part of ‘The Great America Loop’.

Sailing the inland waterways from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico is approximately 1,530 miles.

How To Sail From The Great Lakes To The Ocean

It’s a feat in and of itself to sail to the Great Lakes. Now you want to take it one step further and reach the ocean, notably, the Atlantic Ocean. How do you chart a sailing course to get to the ocean from one of the Great Lakes?

You can leave the Great Lakes and reach the Atlantic Ocean in one of three ways, via the Mississippi River, the Erie Canal, or the St. Lawrence Seaway.

In this guide, we’ll unravel the mystery of how to traverse the above paths all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. We’ll include plenty of sailor’s insights along the way. By the time you’re done reading, you’ll be ready to plan your sailing trip!

Sailing from the Great Lakes to the Ocean: Here’s How It’s Done

From the mississippi river.

The Great Lakes are a hop, skip, and a jump from the Mississippi River if you take the Illinois and Michigan Canal.

This route will also introduce you to the Tenn-Tom Waterway, which is short for the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, a 234-mile waterway from the 20 th century.

sailboat on lake

You may recall our article about sailing the Great Loop. Well, if that’s a course you decided to take after reading our post, then you should definitely start your route to the Atlantic from the Mississippi River. If you haven’t read the post yet, you can read it by clicking here .

sailboat on lake

The reason? As you go, you’ll cross the western part of the Great Loop, which is about half the loop. Then you’d make an exit south of Lake Michigan at Chicago right when you reach the Chicago River.

If you follow that route, you’ll soon find yourself venturing along the Des Plaines River downstream. You’ll keep going beyond Peoria with sights of the heartland. By the time you reach the Illinois River, you’d be at the Mississippi River right near St. Louis.

You can also depart from St. Louis, heading for Cairo (in Illinois, not Egypt) as you venture north along the Ohio River and then across the Tenn-Tom Waterway.

Yet a third way you can leave from the Mississippi River is to take that river south and keep going until you reach Memphis. From there, sail towards Greenville, Mississippi.

You’ll be closer to New Orleans by the time you reach the Atlantic Ocean, but you will get there.

You can even start from Lake Michigan, venture down the Mississippi River, through the Tenn-Tom Waterway, and then along the gulf coast of Florida.

Sailor’s Insights:

The downstream portion of sailing the Des Plaines River doesn’t require you to put your mast up. Instead, you can allow the gentle breezes here to propel you forward, which is quite helpful.

The Tenn-Tom Waterway, although manmade, is still beautiful and will be one of the best sights on your trip for sure.

When sailing through the Florida Keys, be wary of hurricane season. That starts on June 1 st and lasts until November 30 th .

The downside of taking the Mississippi River is that you’re subject to commercial traffic from other boaters. Plus, some of the stretches of your trip are a little boring without a lot to see.

From the Erie Canal

The next option you have for reaching the Atlantic Ocean from the Great Lakes is to take the Erie Canal. The canal cuts through Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, and Lake Champlain.

You have a few variations of this route that you can take depending on your preferences. When sailing this route from the upper Great Lakes, by the time you reach Lake Huron, you can go one of two ways.

Your first option is the Trent-Severn Waterway, a short canal between Lake Huron, the Georgian Bay, and Lake Ontario at Port Severn.

sailboat on lake

The waterways that extend from here are the Severn River, Lake Couchiching, Lake Simcoe, Kawartha Lakes, the Otonabee River, and the Trent River.

You’d cross through Lake Simcoe and then over several lakes across Lake Ontario to the north. You can skip Detroit as part of your route on this path, seeing instead the Parry Sound and the North Channel on Lake Huron.

Your second option is to go all the way down south of Lake Huron until you reach St. Clair River. You’d take the river to Lake St. Clair and then go south until you reach the Detroit River to get to Lake Erie.

When departing from Lake Erie or the vicinity, take the Welland Canal to reach Lake Ontario. Then you’d turn east to the Oswego Canal in New York.

By venturing south for 24 miles along the canal, you’d get to the Erie Canal near Liverpool (New York, not England) and the Three Rivers. Sail east to Albany, then go south along the Hudson River until you reach New York Harbor.

You can see plenty of wilderness along the St. Lawrence Gulf as well as picturesque views of New York’s skyline that are usually not afforded to you.

By the time you depart from the Hudson River, you’ve reached the Atlantic Ocean. You’ll be very close to the Caribbean!

Most sailors who wish to reach the ocean from one of the Great Lakes will use the Erie Canal to get there. That’s why you’re likely to see so many boatyards.

Not only is it common to reach the Atlantic Ocean from the Erie Canal, but it’s considered one of the faster routes as well.

That said, be sure to plan for lock and canal closures, which can really put a damper on your sailing plans and possibly force you to go a different route.

You will have to put your mast down at times, and you could be charged for each foot of length your mast has, anywhere from $4 to $8.

From the St. Lawrence Seaway

The third option you have for reaching the Atlantic Ocean from the Great Lakes is to take the St. Lawrence Seaway.

The seaway includes a series of channels, canals, and locks between the United States and Canada.

You typically have to receive permission to sail through, but if you do get it, you can easily reach the Atlantic Ocean. Your sailboat needs to be at least 20 feet and weigh no more than a ton.

About 2,000 boats pass through per year for recreational sailing just like you. These sailors aren’t all necessarily going to the Atlantic Ocean, but surely some are.

sailboat on lake

The coastline along the seaway is absolutely gorgeous, making this more challenging, even adventurous route absolutely worth your while.

You’ll see some of the most stunning sights as you reach Maine’s coast as well as when passing through the northeastern provinces of Canada.

Speaking of Canada, it has another natural wonder that you’ll get to witness as you sail the St. Lawrence Seaway, and that’s the Thousand Islands.

As the name implies, this series of islands includes about 1,800 in all between Canada and the US.

To get to the Thousand Islands, leave Lake Ontario and sail along Montreal. Then you can venture on through the St. Lawrence River beyond Quebec to reach the Gulf of St. Lawrence. If you want, take some time to visit New Brunswick, Labrador, and Newfoundland since you have this unique opportunity.

If you need a shortcut, then from the St. Lawrence River, begin sailing the Richelieu River in Quebec. The river will be downstream of Montreal.

Continue to Lake Champlain, then travel along the Hudson River from the lake’s southern end. You’ll reach Albany, New York, cutting out a lot of St. Lawrence River travel in the process.

Although this route is picture-perfect, it’s a longer way to reach the ocean.

The recommended time to start sailing is around July 1 st . If you’re a couple of days later than that, you might still be okay, but if it’s been more than a week, you should take the other routes instead.

You can keep your mast up the entire time without incurring additional fees, which is another obvious advantage.

The tie-up areas and docks around this route are plentiful due to the beauty and popularity of the area. You can stop overnight or even for several days and not have to worry about your boat.

That said, commercial traffic should be allowed to sail in front of recreational sailors like yourself, so always give them the right of way.

Keep out of the shipping lanes in the down-bound lane near the Atlantic Ocean and the up-bound lane, which is also close to the Atlantic as if you were leaving it.

The sailing here can be quite difficult, especially if your route takes you near the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia. There, the water can rise over 45 feet in a span of only 12 hours. You have to be ready for that as well as rough currents.

Sailing from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean gives you a unique chance to personally experience some of the world’s greatest waterways and canals. Start with the easier routes and work your way up. Enjoy the ride!

Sailing Lake Pepin

When sailing Lake Pepin, not only are you experiencing being at one with sea and wind, but you are also taking part in history.

Mark Twain piloted paddle wheel steamboats and wrote about his experiences in his book, Life on the Mississippi. Paddle boats can be seen weekly on Lake Pepin sailing charters during our sailing season.

Mississippi bluff country, also know as the Driftless Area, has it’s geological history rooted in post-glacial meltwaters. As the glaciers retreated north, vast amounts of water flowed south, carving the tremendous bluffs and valleys seen today.

Maiden Rock bluff has it’s own unique history, harkening back to Native American folklore. A young woman chose to leap from the bluff rather than marry a man she did not love.

Bald eagles, once at the brink of extinction in the lower 48 states, are now a common sight on Lake Pepin and one of the great success stories of modern conservation. You might even see one grab a fish if you’re lucky!

You’ll experience all this and more when you set sail on beautiful Lake Pepin with Lake City Sailing LLC.

Sailing Lake Powell

Lake Powell

Lake Powell and one of her many narrow channels.

I’m often asked about sailing on Lake Powell and whether or not it’s possible. Sailing Lake Powell is possible if you plan your trip well but the winds are either too little or too much. The canyon walls have a way of deflecting, or channeling, the wind that can make it tricky for even the most experienced skipper.

Places to Stay near Go Sail Flathead Lake

Although we have not personally visited every place on this list, we do have a few suggestions. We know it can be hard to find a vacation rental, so check out this list for a good place to start.

Have a five star experience with Go Sail Flathead Lake! ★★★★★

I took the 101 course with Trevon Baker and 103 with John Barlow. They were super knowledgeable and awesome instructors. I had zero experience and now I am absolutely hooked! I can’t wait to buy my own sailboat and will be taking the 104 class as soon as I can.

We took a charter sail out with Captain Genevieve. She was safety conscious, encouraging and enjoyed our conversation. The water and wind was perfect. Flathead Lake is a beautiful lake. Dayton is a quiet get away from the tourist areas.

Captain Genevieve is absolutely phenomenal in her knowledge and how readily she shares her insight. My husband and I want to build more confidence and skills in sailing our boat and asked Captain Genevieve to help us. She provided us an incredible lesson. She carefully listened to us for what we wanted out of the lesson. During the lesson, she offered direction and helpful hints, We love Go Sail Flathead Lake and highly recommend it.

This was a truly incredible experience. The team made the learning fun, effective and helped the knowledge stick. Our second course in particular, 103 with Jon Barlow, left me feeling confident I could charter my own keelboat and not leave it at the bottom of a bay somewhere. Jon is a great instructor and had a manner of ensuring you were comfortable with being effective on the water. If you do the 101, definitely follow with the 103.

We wanted to try something different and unique and selected this wonderful sailing experience on Flathead Lake. Our charter captain for our afternoon trip was a lovely, charming lady who has sailed all over the World on all kinds of boats and she made this trip perfect for us with his interesting travel stories. Very safety conscious and as much (or as little) time for us to practice sailing techniques. The lake is still a little cold for me right now, but we were also offered the option to take a dip and swim in the lake if we wanted. We would highly recommend Captained Sailing Charter this experience especially if celebrating a special occasion as we were welcome to bring our own cooler with adult beverages.

And I was like a little kid again when Captain Jake let me take the wheel while we sailed under the famous Duluth Ariel Lift Bridge with hundreds of "fans" waving at us as we passed through the boat canal. I was in 7th heaven!

Tom S

Gracious hosts with immense knowledge of Lake Superior. Their years of experience is obvious as they always seem to know the best place to go depending on the conditions. Each day was a new adventure with beautiful islands and deserted beaches to choose from for our next destination. Jake and Kelly sail the boat with skill and ease, never missing a chance to share the history of places you cruise by. They happily handed over the wheel and ropes to allow us the full experience of sailing. Our trip withTime Out will never be forgotten and we hope to return for another trip soon.

Dom & Jenny

Sailing with Time Out is a wonderful experience. We sailed the Apostle Islands with them and had an unforgettable time. They are very knowledgeable, down to earth and were so accommodating, ensuring that we were able to see and explore all the wonderful things Lake Superior has to offer.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

sailboat on lake

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

sailboat on lake

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

sailboat on lake

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

sailboat on lake

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

sailboat on lake

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

sailboat on lake

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

sailboat on lake

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

sailboat on lake

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

sailboat on lake

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.

Officials: Body of missing Ripley County man, Carson Hughes, found in Versailles Lake

sailboat on lake

VERSAILLES, Ind. — Officials recovered the body of 18-year-old Carson Hughes in Versailles Lake, Sunday evening, according to a press release from Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Officers said they recovered his body while using Sonar in six feet of water at 6:50 p.m.

The Ripley County Coroner pronounced Hughes deceased. His cause of death is pending an autopsy.

Initially, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said Ripley County dispatchers received a report at around 1:30 p.m. Friday about an 18-year-old man who went missing at Versailles Lake in Versailles State Park.

Officials said Carson Hughes' car was found unlocked with the keys still in the vehicle near the boat ramp on the lake. His kayak was also located on the water nearby. A camera and tripod belonging to Hughes, who is a wildlife photographer, were also found. Officials also found Hughes' shirt, they said.

Conservation officers and members of the Ripley County Sheriff's Office began searching the surrounding land Friday night and used thermal and side-scan sonar technologies to search the lake. Hughes was not found. Officials resumed their search just before 8 a.m. Saturday, and they focused on areas around the lake.

Josh Thomas, a conservation officer with the Department of Natural Resources, said they're working with multiple agencies, including Cincinnati Rescue team, Indiana State Police and more to search.

"We're using like sidescan sonar technology, thermal imaging. And then we have drones in the air helicopter in the air, that type of thing," Thomas said. "So we're going to exhaust the entire you know, the lake in the back and the creek here and then all the trails and the biking trails. Kind of the entire park."

He said there were two things complicating the search: rough terrain caused by weather earlier in the week and the scale of the search area.

Numerous people and organizations assisted in the search for Hughes. "Assisting agencies include the Ripley County Sheriff's Office, Coroner's Office, Indiana State Police Aviation, EMA, EMS, Health Department, Versailles Fire, Delaware Fire, Hamilton County Urban Search and Rescue, Friendship Fire, Batesville Fire, Buckeye Search and Rescue, Ohio Task Force One, Texas EquuSearch, Hamilton County Police Association Dive, and hundreds of civilian volunteers," Indiana DNR said.

Fatal boat crash launched woman into trees and threw man into water, Florida cops say

A body pulled from trees was among two discovered after a 21-foot boat crashed near southwest Florida’s Little Hickory Bay, according to investigators.

It happened around 3 p.m. Friday, March 15, not far from North Naples, about a 160-mile drive south from Tampa, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a news release.

“The vessel, carrying two occupants, was traveling north, passing red channel marker 14, when it’s starboard side ran into the mangrove trees, ejecting both passengers,” FWC officials said.

“The unmanned vessel remained in gear until it crashed into the mangrove shoreline, coming to a stop.”

Judy Eaton, 71, of Bonita Springs “was recovered from the mangrove trees where she was pronounced deceased,” officials said.

John Moulder, 71, of Naples, was airlifted by EMS to Gulf Coast Medical Center in Ft. Myers, “where he later died from his injuries,” officials said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but alcohol may have been a factor, investigators said in the report.

Boaters who use the area regularly told WBBH the couple died at a turn known to be dangerous, but signs marking the hazard vanished during Hurricane Ian , which struck southwest Florida in September 2022.

“Sadly, I was not surprised,” boater Kevin Price told the station. “I had a conversation with another friend recently about this turn specifically, and some of the close calls I’ve seen at this spot.”

Major Fire on Historic Canadian Lake Bulk Carrier MV Cuyahoga

A Canadian-registered lake bulk carrier suffered a major fire at the Port of Ashtabula, located on Lake Erie in Ohio.

The U.S. Coast Guard said USCG personnel responded to the incident on board the M/V Cuyahoga with boats and a helicopter.

The Master and crew of reported as safe and accounted for.

Photos showed the vessel engulfed in flames at a dock.

“ #AshtabulaCounty is utilizing maximum county and city fire department resources to put out the fire. #CoastGuard marine inspectors and investigators are en route to begin investigating the cause of the fire. The captain of the port has issued a safety zone around the vessel,” the U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes wrote on “X.”

Unconfirmed reports said the fire has been extinguished and damage is being assessed.

The self-unloading vessel, operated by Rand Logistics, is one of the oldest Canadian registered ships still in active service on the Great Lakes. It was originally built in 1943 to support the war effort and later converted into a self-unloader in 1974.

  2. 10 Best Sailboats for Lakes (Compare Models)

Sailing on lakes can be fun, especially if the wind is steady and the water is relatively flat. Although a 50-foot sailboat wouldn't go amiss on Lake Superior, most lakes are perfect for smaller, more lightweight boats.
