Professionally I started work in the  mid-70's as a yacht broker with Castlemain Marine and whilst continuing my career as a yacht broker, I have also  over the years sold new boats for Sigma Yachts, X-Yachts, J-Boats and Grand Soleil.

Having successfully raced at a high level, including the Admirals Cup, Commodores Cup and three Fastnets, I have won both Cowes Week and Cork Week overall, plus numerous  club and national championships. 

I am a qualified RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and have skippered countless local and long distance yacht deliveries, including multiple trans-Atlantic crossings, UK to Med, Baltic to UK, Irish Sea, North Sea and more Channel crossings than I care to remember!  I have extensively cruised Worldwide with family and friends.

Bachmann has been assisting visiting yachts to Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney and our other islands since 1974. Today we are a major international marine services provider, however, we have not forgotten how we started and we are still here to assist visiting yachts to our beautiful islands.

Guernsey and the other Channel Islands have so much to offer the visiting yacht. Guernsey is a Crown Dependency and as such is not part of the UK nor has it ever been part of the EU. This in its own right has many benefits; Duty-Free Marine Gas Oil, no VAT or other Government service taxes, fantastic transport links (daily flights to London, Southampton and Manchester) for a fast efficient crew change, daily ferry services to the UK and France, an understanding and helpful customs service and most of all a friendly and welcoming people.

Guernsey lies around 20 miles off the Normandy coast of France, a very short diversion from the main shipping lanes through the English Channel and is the most northerly island that can accept SupetYachts into its harbours. Being a self-supporting island community, we are experienced at being able to supply all your needs, including;

Customs and Immigration

It is our business to provide you with customized consulting services, for all Customs issues such as navigational laws, clearance, spares import and export, charter regulations advice, TPA (temporary importation) and much more. As Guernsey is part of the Common Border Agreement between the UK, Ireland IOM and the Channel Islands, guests and crew arriving or joining the vessel though Guernsey will have very little problems.

While there is no VAT or Duty on Marine fuel in Guernsey, a stop in Guernsey provides Customs Endorsed Channel Islands Arrival, being a confirmed exit from the EU/UK, as is required for renewing any EU Temporary Admission VAT waiver.

Provisioning

Guernsey has some of the finest restaurants in the British Isles and as such we are able to source the highest quality products from local vendors depending on their specialty and their pricing, saving you time and delivering the best products to your galley, in the best condition.

We work with the largest Guernsey-based fuel distributor, Rubis, who has one the largest global networks as "physical suppliers" in Marine bunkering.  Together we are able to offer Superyachts some of the lowest fuel and lubricant prices across Europe .

As a crown dependency, Guernsey has a very reputable yacht registry. It is a member of the ‘Red Ensign Group’ of British ship registries, and its yachts enjoy the high standards associated with the red ensign flag.

By registering a yacht in Guernsey, owners can benefit from the advantages of a tax efficient and stable jurisdiction and the favourable tax laws of the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

Using a Guernsey Corporate structure to own and operate a yacht will provide asset protection for the owner and can provide a number of other benefits including:

• Qualification for a flag not available to the individual owner
• Ring fencing the yacht from a liability perspective
• Beneficial Owner Discretion
• VAT registration at a suitable jurisdiction for commercial yachts

Benefits of Registration in Guernsey

• Guernsey is a neutral, politically stable and well-regarded jurisdiction and is white-listed as a transparent and well-regulated offshore finance centre.
• Vessels registered to entities resident in Guernsey qualify for the respected ‘Red Ensign Group’ of British ship registries and Guernsey yacht registration enables the renowned Red Ensign to be flown.
• Regulated by the United Kingdom’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).
• Competitive registry fees with no tonnage tax or other annual ship registry fees.
• European time zone.
• Guernsey registration is valid internationally and all documentation is issued in English and widely accepted.
• There is no requirement for a Guernsey-registered yacht to physically visit Guernsey.
• Ability to obtain a provisional registration to cover vessel for navigation immediately after purchase.
• The Guernsey Register of Ships provides proof of title enabling the owner to register a mortgage on the vessel if desired.
• A Certificate of British Registry is valid for ten years at the end of which ten-year period the process for renewing the registration for a further ten years is very easy.
• Guernsey is outside the VAT territory of the EU making the register useful for non-EU resident owners wanting to operate their vessel VAT free in Europe and who are eligible to do so under Temporary Admission (Temporary Importation) relief.

Services available to Yacht Owners and/or Captains

• Vessel and flag registration,
• Administration of day to day vessel expenses, budgets and crew payroll,
• Liaison with Captain’s and Owner’s regarding annual obligations, registration, flag, marina and harbour fees, etc.
• Vessel builds – Management of super yacht and small boat build budgets, completion reporting, managing stage payments and liaison with owners, shipyards and brokers.

Guernsey has a rich maritime history and we continue that tradition, offering specialist services to the marine industry.  

The Registry is open to vessels with a limit of 150 gross tonnage (as ascertained under the Merchant Shipping (Tonnage) (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Regulations), particularly pleasure yachts. A increase in the tonnage limit for pleasure yachts may be increased at some point in the future, up to under 400 GT.

Vessels intended for commercial use (up to a maximum of 24 metres loadline length – ITC69) can be registered but must comply fully with the current Codes of Practice for the Safety of Small Commercial Vessels and manning requirements.

International Payroll Services

Comprehensive solutions are available for efficient payroll administration, complying with Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006), in accordance with The Seafarer Recruitment and Placement Services (Maritime Labour Convention 2006) (Guernsey and Alderney) Ordinance, 2013.

Established in December 2013, “2-REG”, the Channel Islands Aircraft Registry, is the aircraft registry of the States of Guernsey. The nationality mark is ‘2’ followed by four letters, allowing for attractive registration marks.

There have been 94 registrations to date of lessor owned aircraft, corporate aircraft, including a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, and locally owned aircraft. The registry is also able to award Air Operator Certificates, and benefits from being party to the Cape Town Convention, the international aviation standard relating to aviation assets.

The Registration Process

The process for aircraft registration involves a review of corporate and aircraft due diligence. This applies to the 40 countries where financial services business regulations are considered equivalent to local Guernsey standards. For countries not on this list, the 2-REG requires a Resident Agent in Guernsey, who must be a licensed fiduciary, to be appointed to undertake this work.

The Resident Agent is required to undertake a review of due diligence (corporate and aircraft) to the standard expected by the Guernsey Financial Services Commission, and to report their findings to the registry. In addition, the Resident Agent must act as liaison between the aircraft owner and the registry and submit the registration applications. Dixcart Trust Corporation Limited in Guernsey is a registered Resident Agent for the 2-REG Registry.

Colvic Yacht Masthead Sloop

This Colvic Masthead Sloop Yacht has the benefit of a professionally fitted, brand new Beta Marine 25hp diesel engine, fitted in 2020.  She has had very little use since then. At the time she was also completely fitted out with a new diesel tank, shaft seal, battery, battery cables, switch, together with a new exhaust system, ball valves etc and has had a new cutlass fitted.  She has just been relaunched after being lifted for pressure washing and antifouling. A great yacht, which would be ideal for anyone who wishes to learn to sail with the added benefit of the bilge keels enabling the yacht to dry out in tidal harbours or bays making this great for day or weekend getaways together with having the confidence of a virtually new, low hours engine.

This Rodman 38 Yacht has very spacious accommodation and excellent headroom, ideal for longer cruising or even as a live aboard.  She is fitted with twin Volvo D6 310hp EVC engines and is one of the only Rodman 38 Yacht's to be fitted with both stern and bow thrusters making this boat easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces.  Her engines were serviced in late 2022. She is fitted with all the usual galley appliances plus TV’s and a stereo in the saloon. She is also fitted with a Starlink system providing satellite internet access. Comfortable cockpit seating for those summer days or spend time on the large flybridge. Easy access to the large bathing platform through the transom door. Ocqueteau 695

This Ocqueteau 695 has only done 638 hours on her Nanni 130hp diesel engine. The boat has been well maintained including yearly sometime twice a year out of the water for antifouling and anodes . The engine was last serviced less than 100 hours ago. These Ocqueteau's are very popular with their spacious decks and inboard diesel engines making them ideal for fishing, diving or cruising. This boat is very well equipped as can be seen from the listed inventory. Easy to anchor up and below decks, there is plenty of storage space for warps, boat hooks or fishing rods etc. Inside the wheelhouse is a well laid out space consisting of a sink with fresh water taps and storage. This Beneteau Antares 8 is one of the most high spec version's of this model and is in excellent condition.  This boat has only done approximately 142 hours on her Suzuki 4 stroke 200hp engine last serviced in May 2023.  She is in true turn key condition.  Garmin touch screen multi function display, Boss sound system, Icom VHF radio and Battery charger.  This boat has excellent handling with its bow thruster, a spacious interior, and very comfortable cockpit layout.  Great for social cruising and weekend or longer getaways in live in condition. Black water tank included ensures compliance with local authorities where this is a requirement for stays on board.  Easy to anchor up with the inclusion of an anchor windlass and very easy to dry with the integrated drying legs through the bathing platform. Coronet 24 Cabin Delux

This Coronet 24 Cabin Delux version was professionally re-engined with a new Volvo D3 190 EVC diesel engine and outdrive in 2009. At the same time it was fitted with a new stainless diesel fuel tank, new trim tabs, new self draining GRP deck, new equipment and completely re-wired. The covers were also replaced at the time. It has been maintained and serviced since then. She is well equipped with electronic's as can be seen from the photos. These Danish built GRP boats have been extremely popular due to their excellent sea keeping qualities. They have also proved very popular for river and canal cruising with some also being used as live aboard's. This well laid out boat is spacious for its size. This boat would be ideal for anyone wanting a first boat or for those who love classics.

Moscow City Guide

Moscow is a vibrant and bustling place to live and work. If you’re planning to move abroad and start anew then it isn’t a bad choice for the discerning expat.

A city storied in history, Moscow is full of stunning sights and architecture and there are a number of wonderfully tranquil neighbourhoods, filled with friendly locals and well kept parks. Since the demise of the communist empire Moscow has embraced the flashy side of capitalism and littered the shopping districts with well known western stores and luxurious designer boutiques. The streets of Moscow that were once bleak and desolate are now busy with life and energy, there are many market traders and street vendors selling a host of different wares. One of the downsides of moving to Moscow is that it has the dubious honour of being one of the most expensive cities in the world.

The weather in Russia is often described as iconic. The classically cold harsh winters eventually make way for a warmer summer season, there is little rain in Moscow but there is much snow, often starting around October and lasting all the way to spring. Another seasonal factor worth considering is the lack of daylight that Moscow receives in winter, some days only six hours are recorded.

Employment, Work Permits and Visas

Becoming an expat in Moscow is not without its difficulties as immigration laws are becoming tougher and tougher. You must apply for a visa and work permit before you reach Russian shores as it is extremely difficult to obtain these documents if you travel to Russia without them.

However, recent changes to the strict immigration laws have made life a little easier for foreign workers who are highly skilled. From 1 July 2010 highly qualified foreign professionals will be able to apply for special three year work permits. To qualify for this longer permit you must have key skills in a specialist field, and gain a contract of employment worth £43,000 per year or more.

It is not advisable to travel to Moscow with the intention of securing work once you get there. The majority of expats who journey to Russia have secured employment; or are sent there through their existing employers, as it is very hard for foreigners to source work once in Russia. In fact Russia actually has a yearly quota of work permits that can be given out via the Federal Migration Services. However, there is a large amount of corruption and patronage and these permits are often given out previous to the year in question.

If you work in construction or oil you may be able to gain special expat packages enabling you to work in Russia. The types of sector where expats are likely to be able to gain employment are management, engineering, IT and banking. A problem that arises for foreigners seeking employment in Russia is the fact that home-grown, English speaking Russians, will generally work for less than their expat counterparts. Business Culture

If you start working in Moscow you will notice that Russian business practices are very similar in essence to the western sensibilities you are already used to. Russian business folk are direct and do not put an emphasis on establishing personal relationships. Dress code is generally smart and you can make a good impression on new associates by delivering a good firm handshake and making strong eye contact. When ordering business cards it would be wise to have two sides printed, one in Russian and one in English.

Accommodation

Expats moving to Moscow may face potential difficulty finding somewhere to live. Rental prices in Moscow can be very expensive and lower priced apartments located in the industrial areas are hot commodities due to their cheaper rents. However, these cheaper apartments tend to be basic with often just one room. Many expats will find that it can take up to one month to find accommodation so you may wish to opt for one of the short term apartments that are on offer, which tend to charge by the night. If you are interested in purchasing a property in Moscow then once again you will find that prices are very high. There is a strong expat community in Moscow and many of these expats tend to flock towards the same areas, areas such as Patriarshiye Ponds and Chistye Prudy are both popular.

If you already hold a valid driving licence in your home country then upon relocating to Moscow you will be able to use this existing licence for a total of six months, however you will also need to submit a translated version of your licence, a valid medical certificate that cites good health and that you have no history of substance abuse or mental illness and also your passport. After submitting these documents you will have to take a driving exam, which is completely in Russian and does not allow the use of a translator. The test is made up of 20 questions that are pulled from a bank of 300 stock questions.

If this all sounds a bit daunting then take solace in the fact that the Moscow metro system is one of the most efficient and best transport systems in the world. Lavishly decorated with sculptures and mosaic art, 150 stations make up the metro network and not only is it fast and reliable, but it is also cheap. The metro runs until 1am.

There are also numerous buses and trams to help cart you around Moscow along with special passenger vans (essentially private buses) that actually follow bus routes. Independent, or private, taxis are also found on Moscow’s roads but be aware that as a foreigner you will most likely be charged a higher fare and, whilst mostly safe, these private cars may also be dangerous come nightfall, especially for women.

Healthcare can come with a hefty price tag and sometimes medical insurance will not be accepted. If you require emergency care then be aware that a lack of funding means that there are often delays to the service, also it is uncommon for the emergency telephone operators to speak any language other than Russian so be prepared for this potential barrier. A silver lining in this potentially lethal raincloud is the fact that there are a few international hospitals that do actually cater to foreigners living in Russia. Two examples of these are the American Medical Centre , and the European Medical Group . These facilities both have staff that are predominantly educated at western institutions and they will be able to speak in a variety of different languages, English included, to ensure there are no problems in describing your symptoms. Both of these facilities also have a wide range of medical services available, more so than the standard Russian hospitals.

The authorities of Moscow, indeed the whole of Russia, hold the importance of education in high regard and for this reason you will find that there are many schools to be found in Moscow. There are numerous English-language schools and also specific international schools. Some schools also offer more specialist teaching, focusing perhaps on just math, or foreign languages. Russian children partake in a compulsory eleven year programme of secondary education.

As per most popular expat destinations, there are a number of schools that actually stick to the English National Curriculum. An example of this is the English International School ; which has been operating for over 12 years, and the British International School .

As a UK expat you may not be well versed in the Russian language itself, so if you are thinking about learning Russian you may be interested in attending the language school at the Lomonosov Moscow State University, a popular choice for working expats. Here they offer intensive courses aimed at people who are completely new to Russian, focusing on important phrases and terms that will help you in your day-to-day life.

Entertainment and Lifestyle

Moscow is a truly beautiful city with a phenomenal amount of culture and history. When you first arrive in Moscow it may be worth your while to embark on one of the many city tours so that you can get an idea of the feel of the city, its attractions and prime locations. A city tour will not only show you around Moscow but also gives you a veritable history lesson and fills you in on all the social and economic factors that have helped build your new place of residence into the cosmopolitan hub that it is today.

Given its unique history it is no surprise that Moscow plays host to a wealth of wonderful museums. The Pushkin Museum is home to the second largest collection of fine European art in the world, showcasing the works of such artistic luminaries as Vincent Van Gogh, Matisse and Renoir.

As touched upon before, Russia is a very expensive place for expats to live, but a benefit is the comfort of western sensibilities, which means all the big brands you are used to will have stores in Moscow to cater for your shopping needs. There are also many market places where you can sample a slightly more authentic Russian shopping experience.

Moscow is a city that provides a wide variety of entertainment during both the day and night. There are a huge amount of swanky bars and lively nightclubs waiting for you to step past their bouncers and relax after a hard week’s work with the aid of some authentic Russian vodka.
