Buyer's guide: How to create the ultimate superyacht art collection

Whether you want to commission new art pieces for your superyacht or keep existing works pristine, Claire Wrathall gives you the lowdown

"I don’t believe in art on the high seas,” art dealer and Hollywood producer Arne Glimcher once told me. The founder of Pace Gallery, which deals in works by the likes of Picasso and Rothko, and former owner of the 37-metre Luca Brenta -designed Vitters yacht Ghost , Glimcher loves sailing and art, but believes some passions are best kept separate. “It would have been dangerous to have works of art on board, absolutely irresponsible. I like to be able to have the hatches open and fresh air in the boat.”

Protect your art from salt, humidity and temperature extremes by displaying it in parts of the yacht where the elements can be shut out, however, and there’s no reason superyachts can’t be as safe as galleries. “If you’re inside and you don’t feel too cold or too hot, then the art will be fine too,” says London-based dealer Adrian Sassoon. Just as on land, the main problems are direct sunlight and clumsiness. The former will damage photographs, watercolours and other works on paper, though UV-resistant glass, blinds and judicious placement can mitigate this.

But there are many more robust media. With metalwork or ceramics, says Sassoon, “the work should retain the same strength and depth of colours it would have had when it left the kiln”. As to the risk of knocking something over, small sculptures and objets d’art may actually be safer on a yacht, because in a marine environment they are invariably stuck down with “museum glue” that adheres objects to surfaces to stop them shifting in a swell.

Perhaps it’s not surprising then that remarkable assemblages of art are kept aboard yachts to no detrimental effect. When in 2018 David Hockney’s acrylic-on-canvas Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) sold for $90.3 million (£69m), at the time the most a work by a living artist had ever fetched, the fact that it had previously hung among a collection of valuable paintings on Aviva , the 68-metre superyacht belonging to the businessman Joe Lewis, had clearly done it no harm.

Some collectors commission boats to reflect their art. “I actually designed [ Sea Force One ] around my pieces,” the hedge fund manager Raffaele Costa told me of his 53-metre yacht, when she was refitted in 2013. “Art should be an integral part of any design.” Others customise their art to fit their yachts. The Hamburg-based art adviser Tilman Kriesel is a fund of such tales: the Rothko fixed horizontally rather than vertically as the artist intended; or, worse, the Takashi Murakami, likely to have been worth at least seven figures intact, that was cut to size to fit on a wall in a yacht’s beach club.

Too often decisions about the art are taken at the end of the process and not at the beginning, says Sassoon. “An art collection is naturally an accumulation, not the result of a single shopping trip. And variety is really important.” That said, “most commonly it’s the designers who end up choosing the artwork”, says  Selina McCabe, a partner at Winch Design . Buying or “commissioning pieces of art is an exciting part of the process”. Especially works for spaces that have been designed to be multifunctional, in which case “the art needs to be easily movable depending on how the space is used”, and appropriate wall finishes can be specified accordingly.

Others, like Rémi Tessier , designer of Nahlin and Vava II , insist contractually on oversight of the art lest an owner’s taste “ruin [my] reputation among art collectors. I would not work for a person who just put whatever on the wall.”

Mark Berryman , a specialist in contemporary yacht interiors , takes a more pragmatic view. “Personally, I absolutely love abstract art,” he says. “So whenever I’m designing, I always have in mind the art that I would put in there if it was my interior.” But there’s no second-guessing a client’s taste, and it may be that “what they’ve got in mind is something very classical, or a Klimt. It’s a personal taste until you broach the subject, it really is an unknown. We’ve done a couple of refits where the client has asked for landscapes and very representational work, and sometimes that just doesn’t sit well on a boat in the middle of the ocean. It can feel a little jarring.”

He, too, believes it is best to begin with the art. Too often it’s treated as an afterthought and left till the end of the process. “You can still make it work,” he says. “But it becomes much more difficult if you then decide to commission half a dozen pieces.”

When he designed the refit of Indian Empress (now H ), for example, “the client already had a lot of art on board, and it was great, but the interior was really shouting at it. They were completely different styles.” The art was modern and contemporary, much of it Indian. The yacht was very traditional. And the owner knew it wasn’t working. “He said. ‘You decide where it fits best, but I do want to use it all.’”

Berryman also points to the interiors of Mary-Jean II , which were to some extent influenced by its owner’s collection of pop art, notably Warhol. “We’d seen the collection in their houses and in storage, so we knew what they wanted to use and went for something very contemporary,” to showcase it the better.

But existing collections aren’t always suitable for yachts. “Steer clear of works incorporating ivory or coral or other natural materials on the CITES [Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora] endangered list,” warns Sassoon, because they may cause your captain grief as the yacht travels into certain jurisdictions and, worse, risk confiscation. So be wary of Damien Hirst’s butterfly collages and leave the Polly Morgan snakes at home. Works incorporating taxidermy, even seashells, can be a red flag to customs officials.

One way to obviate any such issue is commission the art from scratch, hence companies such as DKT Artworks . Founded by three art-school alumni and employing about 40 highly skilled craftspeople,  it creates and fabricates everything from mosaics to faux-art deco bas-reliefs, contemporary lightbox installations and trompe-l’oeil murals. Its work can be found on yachts such as DAR , Dilbar , Excellence , Here Comes the Sun , Kismet , Luna and Tis .

If you tire of them, you won’t easily  be able to sell them on the secondary market – but DKT Artworks’ carved and relief panels are, says marketing chief Guglielmo Carrozzo, “very popular at the moment, especially for staircases, [which are] one of the few places on a vessel where you can see what’s going on on different decks”. A bas-relief can be a way of bringing everything together, he says. Commissioning a work means it can not only reflect the owners’ taste, but be sized to fill a specific space.

The Czech glass and crystal design company Preciosa is another translator of ideas into fully realised statements of artistry. Take the 11.2-metre chandelier designed by Seattle-based Susan Young, to evoke bubbles rising to the surface, that it made for Aquila when the 85-metre yacht was refitted by Pendennis in 2016. Descending through four storeys through the yacht’s central spiral staircase, it incorporates more than 850 individually blown-glass pieces.

Few materials can conjure the idea of water as effectively as glass, hence the sculptures produced by Lasvit, another long-established Czech company. Its works can be found on superyachts such as the 77-metre Turquoise Go , for which Lasvit’s Katarína Kudějová Fulínová created an installation of 378 hand-blown crystal rods, each containing its own light source, that when illuminated conjure an image of undulating seagrass on the ceiling above. Inspired by nature but abstract in form, it’s a working light fitting, but also, she hopes, a creation that “opens space for our imagination and functions as a window into our subconscious”. And ultimately, isn’t that the purpose of art?

4 Tips for Curating Luxury Superyacht Art

When designing a luxury yacht interior, a key component to consider is the art that you will select to complement the space. Carefully selected pieces can elevate the interior by adding elements of luxury while surprising and delighting the owner and their guests. Art that is selected for yacht interiors has to be a careful consideration between the design of the interiors, the owners personal tastes and what is feasible for life at sea. Here at Artelier, we have extensive experience researching, sourcing and installing art for luxury yachts, working closely with design partners as well as yacht owners to arrive at their desired aesthetic.

Yacht designer Jonny Horsefield explains that innovation in the industry is fast, stemming from a healthy level of competition between yacht owners. 1. Having Focal Points of Interest

When working with clients we have often used art to create focal points of interest in the interiors, adding unexpected moments of luxury whilst seamlessly blending into the space. Focal points are the

In the Aurora Borealis (67.6m) a special TV Roller artwork was selected for the main salon, (pictured above), hiding the television which could still be the focal point of the space when in use.

In cloud 9 (74m) a series of semi circular wooden sculptures were commissioned. The circular shape mirrored the design of the table beneath whilste drawing the viewer in.

The sculptures were also reminiscent of nautical symbols, perfectly echoing their environment. These sculptures were carefully positioned as focal points of interest.

2. Choosing textures that reflect the environment

Working with leading artists that use a wide variety of material, we can source pieces that echo the environment of life at sea. The sculpture featured above was commissioned from one of the world's most established glass artists. Considered a master in his field, he created this unique flowing sculpture to mirror the movement of water. Incorporating fluid water like textures into a yacht interior would be a unique way of reflecting the movement of the ocean.

For the sauna of the M/Y Plvs Vltra (74m) a contemporary artist was commissioned to create bespoke hand-carved wall hanging piece. The material was carefully chosen to reflect the wooden texture of the sauna.

The adhesives and wood finishes were also selected due to their suitability for protecting the artwork against heat and potential water exposure, ensuring the artwork was hardwearing.

3. Combining luxury with convenience

As clients look for ways to make their superyachts feel more unique, a balancing act occurs betweem luxury and convenience. The trend of TV rollers aboard yachts has helped to maximise limited wall space, taking this trend to another level meant incorporating works of collectable contemporary artists giving a truly unique feel to the space.

Artelier oversaw the whole process from commissioning, to installation of the artworks, considering the technical aspect of incorporating art into the mechanisms of the roller.

4. Making art feel part of the space

As part of our Artist Walls collection, a feature wall was incorporated into the master bedroom of an Amels superyacht. The mural - a 6m gold leaf painting of the views of Mount Fuji was delicately hand painted by a contemporary artist. The gold leaf created an atmosphere in the room that shimmered in the first rays of the morning sun and twinkled with the last golden light of sunset creating an immersive experience.

In another part of the yacht hand-carved wooden sculptures were incorporated into the enclave. The design of the sculptures was made to subtly echo the textures and characteristics of marine life and seashells.

The placement of the artwork was also carefully considered to avoid any type of danger amidst the movement of the ocean.

According to Boat International, the superyacht industry has shown robust growth, with a record number of superyachts built just last year. More than 1,200 superyacht projects were on the global order books in 2023, a 17.5% increase compared to previous years. With a boom in charters, new builds, and technology, demand is expected to continue well into 2024 and beyond. Younger clients are becoming more enticed by the yachting industry, with the average age of superyacht owners now being between 35 and 45.

This year’s yacht events will be center stage at some of the most stunning destinations across the globe. Displaying the best craftsmanship, advancements, and amenities the boat industry has to offer, here are some impressive yacht shows you won’t want to miss.

Palm Beach International Boat Show:

March 21 – 24

Coming this spring, the most prestigious names within the yachting industry will be gathering for four days at the Palm Beach International Boat Show. Over 800 vessels will be featured as well as the finest superyacht lifestyle products. Located off the Argolic Gulf, this breathtaking destination also provides a variety of social programs for attendees, in addition to the numerous vessels anchored in the marina. Forget concerts — Live Nation wants music fans to start going on yacht vacations .

In 2023 and amid a boom in experiential travel , the entertainment company established Vibee, a music-based event curation arm. Less than a year later, Vibee has already executed affairs like a weekend Bahamas getaway headlined by singer Lionel Richie and a three-day Cabo San Lucas, Mexico party featuring DJ Tiësto.

Now, it's moving off-land and to the high seas with its new segment: Vibee Yacht Club.

This summer, Vibee says it'll charter two superyachts for three weeklong Croatia itineraries that are set to be, of course, centered on music.

Vibee is capitalizing on yet another increasingly popular concept: themed cruises.

Themed cruises can vary vastly, from Star Trek-centered sailings to itineraries helmed by famous comedians. And as of late, many of these niche voyages have been selling out faster than ever before.

Themed cruise operator Sixthman's November 2023 hip-hop itinerary sold out in less than five days with no publicly announced lineup.

Similarly, Vibee's first cruise, the 2023 EDSea — a wordplay on the electronic dance music festival Electric Daisy Carnival, or EDC — was fully booked in three days, again with an undisclosed lineup.

Armed with EDSea’s success, Vibee wants to dive deeper into the cruise segment — this time with a luxurious spin.

"We see the desire for cruise and yacht experiences continuing to rise," Harvey Cohen, president of Vibee, told Business Insider, echoing sentiments of the cruise industry's booming demand.

And not just the mass-market players: Over the last year, luxury cruise lines have also seen a rise in interest.

In its fourth-quarter earnings report from February 2024, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said its two high-end brands, Oceania and Regent Seven Seas, had both seen "strong demand."

The latter had launched its latest $517.9 million luxury ship a few months prior, complete with caviar and a $6 million art collection.

Luxury cruises and superyachts aren’t known to be super-affordable.

Vibee says it's chartering the 141-foot-long Lupus Mare and nearly 161-foot-long Prestige for its three yacht sailings.

Vibee Yacht Club's cheapest option starts at $3,100 per person for a two-person cabin. Comparatively, EDSea's 2024 itinerary starts at $1,405 per person for a double occupancy interior cabin.

Yet, it could be a bargain for some superyacht fans: Weeklong charters for Lupus Mare start at about $71,000 a week, according to YachtCharterFleet.

Everything is better on a yacht. Champagne? Tastes better on a yacht. Cruises in general? Better on a yacht.

Going to an international music festival? Well, Vibee thinks it would be better to stay on a yacht than in a hotel.

On July 13, the first itinerary would start on day two of Ultra Europe, a popular three-day electronic dance music festival in Split, Croatia.

Following the event, the two yachts would sail to three Croatian islands before concluding in Hvar, Croatia. Along the way, the itinerary would include daytime swims, a sunset winery visit, and several parties (day and night).

Unsurprisingly, Vibee expects the itinerary to draw in younger travelers, specifically Gen Zers and millennials.

Lupus Mare is set to be chartered for two more itineraries: “Rock the Med” and “Marafiki on the Adriatic.”

A three-person cabin for both starts at $3,500 per person.

On Rock the Med, the week is set to begin with VIP tickets to a Lenny Kravitz show at the historic Pula Arena.

Afterward, it would sail to Croatian destinations with an itinerary that would include beach excursions and clubs.

Marafiki on the Adriatic isn’t centered on a single music event.

Instead, the roundtrip Split itinerary would feature on-board musical performances, daily yoga, "cultural outings," and, of course, beach clubs.

A bonus trip to Sonus Festival, a five-day rave, is an optional add-on.

Like a typical luxury cruise, travelers would have preorganized water taxis, chefs to prepare daily breakfasts and lunches, and all the yacht amenities.

The 20-cabin, 40-guest Prestige flexes indulgences like an indoor lounge, a hot tub, and a sundeck with plenty of beds.

Meanwhile, the 15-cabin, 34-guest Lupus Mare has comforts like a sauna and gym.

Travelers could wind down in the yacht's movie theater or hot tub. Or, they could take a slide into the water.

It’s no surprise Vibee is going the more sumptuous route with its itinerary-focused yacht concept.

" Revenge travel " might as well be known as "regular travel" at this point: People have continued to spend big on extravagant vacations, especially on luxury small cruise ships and trips planned around experiences and adventures.

Both are niches Vibee is trying to carve out for itself: Looking ahead, the new brand is already planning more music and sea-based vacations, Cohen told Business Insider.
