Captain: Robert Sargeant
ROBERT ‘ROBBIE’ SARGENT Originally from Zimbabwe, Robbie was brought up on a farm with a love for the outdoors, sport and a keen sense for adventure. His hobbies also include golf and darts but his favorite from a young age was and always has been fishing, whether it’s fresh water or deep sea. After school, he moved to South Africa to play professional rugby, but it was not long before he decided on it being an unlikely permanent career choice. He turned towards scuba diving instead, despite the cold waters of Cape Town and worked his way up to becoming an instructor. After a few years of this, Robbie grew keen to search for warmer water to dive in and accepted a job in Raja Ampat, Indonesia. The travel bug set in, Captain’s ticket in hand and many nautical miles later, there is nothing that Robbie loves more than finding new places to have fun in, both above and under the water. Working throughout studying within restaurants and catering, it gave her an opportunity to build up experience in hospitality, develop professionalism within the service industry but most of all appreciate different cuisines. After graduating from University of Cape Town, South Africa with a Social Science degree, Sofia realized she wasn’t motivated towards a formal office setting and sought after a career in which she could combine her love of travel with learning new skills. Discovering the world of yachting she has since worked in the Mediterranean, Australia, Indonesia, Florida and the Caribbean. Being able to explore new places and gain a passion for cooking along the way has been a dream realized. Robbie and Sofie met in Singapore, soon found common ground of similar roots and have been working together within the industry since then for the last 5 years. Their combined passion for food, travel and most of all the ocean has brought them together to love what they do. They have been lucky enough to get to know some extraordinary, remote locations around the world but also appreciate being able to share time with family and friends in their home country, Zimbabwe. As a team, they love being able to entertain, share stories and meet new people to learn theirs. Robbie and Sofie are keen on keeping charters light-hearted while making it a priority to go above and beyond so that their guests always have an adventure to remember. He soon got the bug for traveling and particularly wanted to pursue his passion of sport fishing. He then joined a travelling sport fishing boat in 2013 and hasn’t stopped moving since. Dean got his Captain’s License shortly after that and started driving boats in remote areas. He has had the pleasure to fish competitively and recreationally in all oceans with some of the best crews in the world and gained a huge appreciation for the ocean and all things Maritime. ACY 90′ – Boat Review
- By Capt. Ken Kreisler
- Updated: June 5, 2013
As we pulled in the last of the lines that tethered us to our slip at the south dock of Palm Beach’s Sailfish Marina, someone watching from the quay as C’est La Vie ‘s captain began sliding the big boat out into the channel and free of the land smiled and said, “Have a nice flight.” Within minutes of clearing the inlet, and with the calm open ocean before us, it was quite evident what that remark meant.
Performance
The bow of the 90-foot C’est La Vie , the latest build from Dominick Lacombe’s Stuart, Florida-based American Custom Yachts (ACY), rose a bit at first, and then I heard the turbochargers kick in. The big boat lifted herself out of the water as the engines spooled up past 1,100 rpm, past 1,500, and then settled in at 1,750. And just like that, displacing some 190,000 pounds, she was flirting with 39 knots and flying across the relatively calm water off Palm Beach Inlet. At 1,950 rpm, we hit just under 42 knots, and the boat finally topped out at 44.6 knots while turning 2,100 rpm.
“For me, it all started when I was a kid fishing the offshore canyons back in Cape May, New Jersey,” Lacombe says. “In those days, if you had an 18-knot boat and you were running 70 to 80 miles offshore, well, that was pretty good. I knew back then that big, fast boats were the kind I wanted to be involved with. The faster you got to the fishing grounds, the more time you could spend there.” The 90-footer seemed to echo Lacombe’s principles as the captain put the big boat through a series of exhilarating turns and maneuvers, one of which involved backing down hard and watching the ensuing water drain remarkably fast out of the huge cockpit.
Never wavering from his fast-boat philosophy, by the time he was 29, Lacombe was running the Monterey boat company. In June of 1992, with the initial launch of a 58, ACY was born. The company then built a 63- and a 65-footer; all of the boats were named Freedom.
Lacombe told me of a previous build, whose over-the-top galley was its central focus, but C’est La Vie ‘s owner, and also the owner of ACY, had a much different focus. This boat would be built around a pair of massive MTU 16V 4000 M93L 9,200 hp engines.
Construction
Constructing C’est La Vie , with her noticeably low profile for such a big vessel, required a fine and exacting blend of technology, vision and boatbuilding savvy. Having a boat of this size that can deliver the kind of performance expected from a sport-fishing machine is something else; and that is what Lacombe and his crew are dedicated to achieving.
“There is a period of time from when you start talking to a customer until the contract is signed,” Lacombe says. “Our owners are seasoned veterans of the build process, and when they finally decide on ACY, we’ve already gotten to know them very well, and know just how they are planning to use their boat. We don’t try and tell them what they want; instead, we explain what we’ve done in the past and what will fit their needs, and then we discuss what they are looking for.”
C’est La Vie is a cold-molded jig boat built with five layers of 12 mm Okoume plywood on the bottom, with Kevlar and fiberglass inside and out. From the waterline up, it’s two layers of the ply, again with Kevlar and fiberglass inside and out. To help save weight, ACY uses Divinycell composite coring in the decks and Nida-Core in the deck hatches. For the cabinetry and any nonstructural bulkheads, they use Tri-Cell. For the structural bulkhead, ACY uses vacuum-bagged marine-grade plywood over balsa core.
Engine Room
Nothing has been spared to make sure she is rock-solid all around. Being able to handle the incredible weight and power of the main engines, each clocking in at 10-plus tons and being able to develop the kind of torque to make your knees weak meant that Lacombe and his crew needed to plan and build a special engine bed to handle the load.
“The motor mount system is all aluminum,” Lacombe said as he and I stood in the cavernous engine room before all that power came to life. “And the entire space here, from chine to chine and bulkhead to bulkhead, is integrated with an aluminum engine bed system, allowing the motors to not only sit on the keel, but on every stringer and chine as well.”
In addition, V-drives are used to lessen the shaft angle, resulting in a more efficient use of all the horsepower. “Backing down is also more effective, since we’re not digging in and pulling the boat down.” Lacombe and his ACY crew even had to design and fabricate special air boxes to allow the monstrous power plants to get sufficient ventilation.
Given her length and beam, and that she’s all custom, the interior of C’est La Vie was designed and outfitted according to the owner’s demands and his planned use of the boat both to be an ultimate fishing platform and to accommodate his large family.
To that end, her main salon offers wide-open spaces, with all galley appliances housed in belowcounter drawers and cabinets. There is nothing to block the spectacular views out of those extra-large windows to either side, or from the salon’s aft end as well.
Given all the room here, the seating arrangements and dining space can be configured in several ways, all of which work within the given dimensions. “All the furniture and cabinetry you see here was done under one roof, the same one that builds the boat,” Lacombe pointed out as we took a turn around the interior. “The fabrics, leathers and any canvas are all done in house by American Canvas & Interiors.”
A centerline staircase leads down to a long hallway and the six-stateroom (three over to port and three on the starboard side), five-head layout. Lacombe and I opened doors, drawers and closets, and I observed more-than-ample storage areas in each room. Indeed, I found so much space aboard C’est La Vie — from cockpit to engine room to flying bridge — that once provisioned, and but for fuel considerations, she is quite able to accommodate her crew for an extended stay away from any dock.
Of course, being a no-nonsense and not-for-the-faint-of-heart fishing machine, C’est La Vie ‘s flying bridge and cockpit mean business. Lacombe and his team outfitted these areas with everything one could want in a deepwater, horizon-chasing sport-fisherman. The centerline helm offers plenty of room for a vast array of electronics, communication and navigational equipment, installed by affiliate IMS American Marine Electronics.
Forward seating is abundant, and there is space for any number of cooler and freezer options you may require. And don’t forget those 60-foot Rupp five-spreader riggers on that substantial Bausch-American tower, custom fabricated and installed by ACY.
The teak-soled cockpit offers the fishing crew the kind of space and amenities that one would expect on a world-class tourney boat, and as we banked on a gentle, controlled 40-knot-plus turn and powered our way back to the dock, I could only imagine all those trolled lines aft with cutting fish eyeing everything from the teasers to Spanish mackerels.
If you’re thinking of competing in the rarefied air of a truly custom sport-fishing boat, a visit to ACY’s Stuart, Florida, facility is an absolute must. While the cost of fulfilling your dream is something you will need to discuss with Lacombe and his crew, the effect of having your hands on the wheel of one of his designs is guaranteed to be priceless.

Kirsten, a native of South Africa, grew up enjoying the pleasant climate and taking part in various outdoor activities, such as photography, swimming, and showjumping. She excelled in golf and earned several titles and a place on provincial teams before scuba diving captured her imagination during her first dive in the ocean. She attended the University of Johannesburg where her studies in Industrial Design deepened her appreciation of the ocean ecosystem and sparked a passion for developing projects to address ocean conservation. As her interest in photography shifted to the underwater world, she found herself drawn to a non-traditional career and pursued full-time work in diving and sailing. She honed her skills in Tuna fishing and spearfishing while working for a fishing charter company in Cape Town. Today, her love for the ocean and marine life remains one of her greatest passions.

We have chartered several times in the BVIs, and our experience with VCY was the absolute best. The boat was in great condition and the service start to finish was fabulous. We will be back!
"Friendly, Professional & Accommodating!"
Our charter yacht was nearly new and well maintained. VCY was responsive whenever we had questions during our charter as well. Highly recommended!
"Best vacation we have ever taken!"
VCY was fantastic!! They answered every question, helped with all the travel details. Booked us taxis to and from the airport and even got us reservations for a special birthday dinner. We will absolutely be back!
"Exceptional Experience with 1st Class Crew!"
Highly recommend this organization… they were even able to accommodate a last minute itinerary change due to tropical storm “Beryl”!
"Best Week of My Life!"
Virgin motor yachts lined us up with a great Captain and assisted with all the details in preparation. I am already planning to come back in November.
"All Around 1st Class Customer Service"
Our 3rd year with Virgin Motor Yachts and we are starting to plan our trip for next year. An excellent vacation covering 7 islands over the 10 days.
"Search No Further VCY Is It!"
If I were to write everything good about our experience with VCY…I would need another week on their CAT on the BVI!
"Better Than We Could Have Ever Imagined"
From the planning stage to last day of our trip, we could not have asked for any better experience. Alexia and crew were wonderful to deal with.
"Another Amazing Week With VCY"
Amazing customer service. Highly recommend VCY ahead of the other two big companies on the island with very little customer service.

Robert Sargeant
Sofia Ribeiro
SOFIA ‘SOFIE’ RIBEIRO Born and raised in the landlocked country of Zimbabwe, Sofia’s love for water originated whilst growing up as a national swimmer and waterpolo player. C'est La Vie
Within the C’Est La Vie you will discover a harmonious balance of opposites: style and function; comfort and practicality; simplicity and technology. Here aesthetic beauty and luxury are equally as important as performance, safety and convenience.
She is not only stunning but the yacht also performs extremely well, she sails perfectly under all conditions and has proven to be very fast on the water. As people say “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, many people will have different ideas on the interior and exterior styling. It is new, it is fresh and has a lot of warmth in it. All aspects of modern comfort are covered and it is the true result of a passionate quest for the statement the owners wanted to make.
The Master’s Suite is the Owner’s domain and is split level creating unusual generosity of space. The suite is dominated by a private lounge area at the entry level and a luxurious king-sized bed on the second level just two steps below. Natural all-round light bathes the suite in different moods as the day turns to night.
A sideboard divides the lounge from the bedroom. It is made of light white panelling contrasting with satin walnut surfaces of the built-in elements. The elegant lounge atmosphere resonates through the entire room.
Two twin guest suites and a VIP suite, each having their own ensuite bathrooms are situated in the middle and forward of the lower deck. The VIP suite resonates an air of charm through the craftmanship of the finest materials. The satin walnut surfaces, the frames of the bed, the ceiling with ostrich print, the copper-plated wall panelling combined with white painted surfaces and the cream carpets lend the interior a demure beauty.

Written by Zuzana Bednarova
The first pavilion of Crocus Expo IEC hosted an extraordinary exposition of the 5th International exhibition of yachts and boats Moscow Boat Show. The show had been incredibly famous for five years already not only thanks to the specialists of the market segment as well as professional sportsmen but also thanks to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.
Moscow Boat Show 2012
The organizer of the project was the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. The show was supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine.
The exposition space increased up to 30 000 sq m and was accommodated in all 4 exhibition halls of the fairgrounds! 280 Russian (Arkhangelsk, Vyborg, Kazan, Kaluga, Republic of Karelia, Moscow and Moscow region, Nizhny Novgorod, Novorossiysk, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, St. Petersburg, Sverdlovsk region, Sochi, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Yaroslavl region) and foreign ( Denmark , Germany , Holland , Greece , Spain , Italy , Cyprus , China , Latvia , Poland , USA , Turkey , Ukraine, Finland , France , Montenegro and Croatia ) companies participate in the show.
Moscow Boat Show provided the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continued to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!
Unique exhibits were presented at the show for the first time: exposition of private submarines from U-Boat Russia company, Marquis Yachts 420 SB motor yacht from Sport Bridge S. Marine series, SAGA-415 yacht from Saga Boats Norwegian shipyard, Jetlev-Flyer from MS Watersports.
Moscow Boat Show a Great Success
More than 400 yachts were displayed within the frames of the event including the largest boats ever exhibited in Russia – the 19-meter giant motor yacht Princess 54 as well as the Princess 50 yacht from Nord Marine and Baja speed boat from Burevestnik.
Domfinland OY unveiled a luxury project from Finnish real estate: a seaside premium class hotel in Hanko named consonant with the location Merihanko.
The trade fair was traditionally opened by a Gala Opening Ceremony. Arcady Zlotnikov, First Deputy Director Crocus Expo IEC, was the first to take the floor at the official opening ceremony. He greeted warmly exhibitors, guests and visitors of Moscow Boat Show. Nikolay Krjuchek, Deputy Chief of the State Inspection on Small size Vessels (GIMS) of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Russia, Georguiy Shaiduko, Acting President of the Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS), Olympic champion in Atlanta and Ekaterina Grishechkina, Director of exhibition Moscow Boat Show also spoke at the ceremony.
The high-ranking guests noted dynamic development of the branch which well reasoned the intensive growth of the exposition and appearance of rather unique “gems”.
A number of business meetings and negotiations were held within the frames of the project: the exhibition was visited by a large delegation of Greek businessmen for the purpose of establishment of mutually beneficial cooperation with the Russian colleagues.
More than 400 yachts on display at the Show
Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS) celebrated its 100 anniversary within the frames of Moscow Boat Show and arranged an exposition of future sailing sport museum (rare awards, gifts, articles from private collections, pictures and etc.) which had been collected since 1912.
Due to carefully chosen running dates the show was visited by more than 26 000 people. The majority of the visitors were of targeted audience – vessel owners and specialists of the branch.
The work at the next edition of the show is under way! The show will be held in March 2013. The overall exhibit space will comprise 40 000 sq m. The exhibition will impress with exclusive exhibits and the latest technological achievements.
Moscow Boat Show was not only an entertaining but at the same time a business promotional event. Participation in the trade fair was a unique opportunity to present a company and products to a distinctly selected targeted audience of industry specialists. They were well prepared to discuss business in the Russian market and even to close a deal on-site.
The show helped representatives of yachting business to get acquainted with their Russian colleagues and gradually improved national yachting market to a new level. It is obvious that for 5 years of its running the project has turned to a status event of the international exhibitions calendar.
