Huntington WV is an Ohio River cruise port and city in West Virginia USA (Cabell County and Wayne County) with population around 50,000. The city is located at the mouth of Guyandotte River (one of Ohio's tributaries). By annual shipping traffic, Port Huntington Tri-State is currently ranked West Virginia state's largest river port and the USA's second-largest inland port (after New Orleans ) and the USA's 15th-largest. Excepting the neighborhoods Westmoreland and Spring Valley, most of Huntington is in Cabell County.

Huntington is the largest city in the Huntington-Ashland Metro (combining 7 counties in WV-KY-OH/West Virginia-Kentucky-Ohio) with total population around 370,000. The city's current economy is based on river shipping and heavy industries like coal, oil, chemicals, steel production. The settlement was founded in 1775 (as Holderby's Landing, part of Great Britain's Virginia colony), incorporated in 1799 (as Guyandotte), and in 1871 renamed Huntington - after Collis Potter Huntington (1821-1900, industrialist and railway magnate).

Huntington WV is best known for its  Marshall University (1837-founded, in downtown), Huntington Museum of Art (1952-opened, in the Park Hills neighborhood), Collis P. Huntington Historical Society and Railroad Museum, Mountain Health Arena (fka Huntington Civic Center, 1977-opened), Camden Park (1903-opened amusement park), Special Metals Corporation's Plant (refractory alloys). The city's largest employers are Marshall University, Cabell Huntington Hospital (303-bed medical center), St Mary's Medical Center (393-bed medical center), CSX Transportation (freight railroad network in the eastern USA and Canad's Ontario and Quebec provinces), US Army Corps of Engineers (LRD-Great Lakes and Ohio River Division), Amazon.com Inc (e-commerce), DIRECTV (direct broadcast satellite service provider).

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The majesty of a bygone age graced the shore of the Ohio River at Huntington’s Harris Riverfront Park on Sunday, as the Belle of Cincinnati arrived for three river cruises offering a relaxing cap to a weekend of nonstop action in the city from the Classic Regatta to the West Virginia Hot Dog Festival.

The sternwheeler boat, resplendent in white with red trim and black steam stacks, took passengers out for a noon brunch cruise, an afternoon sightseeing cruise and an evening dinner cruise.

Touted as the flagship vessel of BB Riverboats, which operates a fleet of similar vessels that offer cruises and dining, the Belle of Cincinnati has been a major draw in Huntington in recent years, and Sunday was no exception.

Crowds lined up to board the boat, and just as many came simply to get a glimpse or snag a few photos of the vessel.

“I’m absolutely looking forward to it,” said Nan Crenshaw Sadler of Denver, who was in town visiting family.

“I was born and raised here, and we enjoy this beautiful, wonderful river.”

Julia and Eric Colliflower of Barboursville said they were looking forward to traveling on the Belle of Cincinnati, as neither had been on a sternwheel boat since the West Virginia Belle was making runs out of Huntington.

“I had my prom on the West Virginia Belle,” Eric Colliflower said with a smile. “That was the last time I was on one.”

The West Virginia Belle offered dinner and event cruises in the late 1980s and early ’90s, before it was moved to Iowa to become a riverboat casino.

The Belle of Cincinnati departed Sunday night for Point Pleasant, West Virginia, where it is scheduled to hold a special dinner cruise Monday night. The sternwheel boat will be in Maysville, Kentucky, on Tuesday and Wednesday.

American Queen Riverboat Returns To Jewel City

The largest river steamboat ever built, the American Queen, will return to Harris Riverfront Park in downtown Huntington on Thursday, July 19, as part of her 2018 Ohio River cruise from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Louisville, Kentucky.

Originally constructed in 1995 at a cost of $65 million, the American Queen is 418 feet long, 89 feet wide, and 109.5 feet tall with her smokestacks up. She has 222 staterooms for a capacity of 436 guests and a crew of 160. She also features a gym, spa, 24-hour café, and numerous restaurants.

While the riverboat is closed to the pubic for security reasons, the passengers will spend the morning on shore with various tours being offered around the city to welcome them. Last year 374 people visited Huntington via the American Queen.

“Of course, we love this because they come with a boatload of people who come out into the city and explore and who get to see Huntington and have a nice time while they are spending some money here,” Tyson Compton, president of the Cabell-Huntington Convention and Visitors Bureau told the Herald-Dispatch .

The American Queen’s cruises include two buses that travel with the boat that will offer tours around the city to attractions such as Pullman Square, the Old Central City Antique District, Ritter Park, the Huntington Museum of Art, Heritage Farm Village, the Special Collections at Marshall University, and the Shops at Heritage Station. The CVB will also be presenting a pop-up market under the pavilion at Pullman Square featuring roughly a dozen local artisans.

Compton said the response from passengers has been noteworthy in previous visits. “We are showing off the city to these 300-plus people, most of whom have not been to Huntington, and I know last year we had an overwhelmingly positive response and several of them asked for visitor information because they planned to come back on their own and stay longer. Some of these people are not from far away. They may be from Cincinnati or the Pittsburgh area, so it is still close enough where they can come back and visit.”

The charm of Huntington’s recent renaissance has not gone unnoticed on these new visitors either. “They love the downtown area and are very drawn to Pullman Square, and many of them commented on the architecture of buildings that have been renovated and how pretty and vibrant the downtown area is,” Compton said.

The American Queen will be docked at Harris Riverfront Park from roughly 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The public is invited to come see the boat, take pictures, and welcome passengers. There is no admission fee.

2 crew members die during ‘incident’ on Holland America cruise ship

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Two crew members on a Holland America cruise ship died during an “incident” in the ship’s engineering space, the cruise line said.

The unidentified crew members died Friday while the Florida-based Nieuw Amsterdam was at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, Holland America said in a statement.

Authorities were notified and the cause of the accident is being investigated, the cruise line said. Crew members were being offered counseling.

“All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with our team members’ families at this difficult time,” the statement said. “The safety, security and welfare of all guests and crew are the company’s absolute priority.”

The cruise line did not offer any further details about the crew members. It later said the Bahamas Maritime Authority was leading the investigation. The ship set sail out of Fort Lauderdale on March 16 for a seven-night trip.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Caitlin Clark struggled to make shots early, but finished with 27 points and 10 assists as Iowa defeated Holy Cross 91-65 in a women’s NCAA tournament first-round game Saturday.

Kate Martin also had a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (30-4), the top seed in the Albany 2 Regional. Iowa advanced to Monday’s second round to face either eighth-seed West Virginia or ninth-seed Princeton.

Clark, a unanimous Associated Press All-American selection, was just 8 of 19 from the field, 3 of 9 in 3-pointers, showing her frustration with missed shots multiple times during the game.

She was constantly complaining to officials and at one point cameras caught her dad Brent telling her to stop .

“I should probably smile more. I’m a competitor,” said Clark, who even headbutted the basketball during the game in frustration. “I love this game. I’m a perfectionist.”

Clark finished with her 65th career double-double and added eight rebounds.

She got off to a slow start and didn’t make her first field goal until 22 seconds were left in the first quarter. She committed five turnovers in the first eight minutes.

Iowa had a similar start. The Hawkeyes had a 10-0 run midway through the first quarter that didn’t bother the Crusaders, who were within 23-21 at the end of the quarter.

The Hawkeyes then outscored Holy Cross 25-9 in the second quarter, holding the Crusaders to just 1 of 12 shooting. Clark finally got her first 3-pointer with 3:26 left in the first half, shaking her head and rolling her eyes after making the shot.

Holy Cross (21-13) made 12 3-pointers in Thursday’s 72-45 First Four win over UT-Martin, but were just 7 of 34 in 3-pointers in this game, with only three in the second half. The Crusaders, who missed their first 10 shots of the fourth quarter, shot just 32.4% from the field.

Addison O’Grady had 14 points and Gabbie Marshall had 11 for the Hawkeyes. Iowa had a 50-37 rebounding edge despite starting forward Hannah Stuelke, the team’s second-leading rebounder, playing just 10 minutes.

Bronagh Power-Cassidy had 19 points for Holy Cross. Janelle Allen had 18.
