That Didn’t Happen: Busting the Myths About Gordonstoun School in Netflix’s ‘The Crown’

That Didn’t Happen: Busting the Myths About Gordonstoun School in Netflix’s ‘The Crown’

The truth behind five of the myths in Netflix’s historical political drama.

Viewers around the world have tuned in to watch Netflix’s immensely popular drama ‘The Crown’, each keen to see how the royal family operates and what Prince Philip’s school days were like. However, contrary to common misconception, the drama isn’t a documentary, and it’s easy to mistake fiction for fact. Viewers should remember that ‘The Crown’s’ writers fictionalised  many scenes for dramatic effect, and the creator describes the drama as ‘an act of creative imagination’ with a ‘constant push-pull’ between research and drama.

Nonetheless, this dramatisation has raised a few eyebrows – especially when viewers reached season two, which covers Prince Philip and Prince Charles’ school days at Gordonstoun – with quite a bit of fictional embellishment. News sources reported that even Queen Elizabeth herself was left ‘sad and annoyed’ at the untrue depictions in the ‘Paterfamilias’ episode (season two, episode nine).

So, here they are: the five biggest Gordonstoun myths from ‘The Crown’.

Myth 1: Gordonstoun Was a ‘Harsh’, ‘Disciplined’ School

‘The Crown’ depicts Gordonstoun’s founder, Dr Kurt Hahn, as a disciplined, harsh headmaster. But Hahn was actually a Jewish pacifist who fled to Scotland when the Nazis took over Germany in the 1930s. His pacifist beliefs and background instilled a sense of compassion in Gordonstoun, which he led with the philosophy that pupils should take care of one another. Prince Philip developed a strong rapport with Hahn over the years and, in his final year at school, became ‘Guardian’ (head boy), a term Hahn used to symbolise the importance of looking after others.

Gordonstoun has preserved Hahn’s philosophy of compassion and pacifism to this day and has no military affiliations.

Myth 2: Children Endured a Regime of Cold Showers and Early Morning Runs

‘The Crown’ dramatises Gordonstoun pupils enduring early morning runs and ice-cold showers. While Gordonstoun’s daily schedule did include a short morning run followed by a cold shower in its early days, the timetable also included plenty of time for boys to relax or enjoy reading and outdoor sports. Ironically, many public schools have now adopted the ‘daily mile’, and cold-water wild swimming is a popular pastime in the UK. Nevertheless, the early morning runs have long since disappeared from Gordonstoun’s daily schedule, and pupils are free to take cold or hot showers as they prefer.

When Prince Philip sadly passed away in April 2021, many Gordonstoun pupils completed the morning run to the Moray coast that Prince Philip often did at school.

Myth 3: Prince Charles Slept in a Cold, Draughty Dormitory

While some scenes in ‘The Crown’ are based on elements of truth, the scenes that show Prince Charles in his cold, draughty dormitory are purely fiction. In reality, Gordonstoun accommodated Prince Charles at Windmill Lodge, a dormitory that opened just three years before his arrival. The dormitory offered all the modern amenities of the day.

Gordonstoun continues to regularly update and refurbish its comfortable, warm accommodation. Today, the school has nine boarding houses – three for female pupils and six for male pupils – where pastoral staff and tutors meet pupils to offer home-away-from-home support. Gordonstoun even invites pupils to attend a ‘weekly brew’ with their house parents. The pastoral staff are an invaluable resource for pupils, offering emotional support, assistance with personal organisation, and guidance on homework.

Myth 4: Prince Philip Built a Gatepost

Many people will remember the scene in ‘The Crown’ where Prince Philip builds a gatepost. But t his was another case of the writers taking a bit of creative licence. Prince Philip didn’t build a gatepost, though he did help to build a pigsty on the school property, which unfortunately no longer exists. He also helped to build a ‘Watchers Hut’ on the nearby coast. Prince Philip himself was a ‘Watcher’ (the precursor to the Coastguard). Gordonstoun also understands that Prince Philip built a wooden sailing boat during his time at school.

Gordonstoun pupils were often involved in helping with various building and renovation projects around the school during Gordonstoun’s early years. Today, service is still an integral part of life at Gordonstoun, and pupils each support one of nine services in the local community, including the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. Gordonstoun has a fully operational fire station – the only UK fire station crewed by young people – on its campus, and pupil volunteers attend an average of 40 callouts a year.

Myth 5: Gordonstoun Is an ‘Elite’ School for Wealthy Families Only

‘The Crown’ may create the impression that Gordonstoun is an elite school for the wealthy only, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Since opening in 1934, Gordonstoun has welcomed children from all backgrounds through its doors. In the school’s early days, Hahn even encouraged wealthier families to pay higher tuition fees so the school could offer lower tuition rates for pupils from lower-income families.

Many years on, in 2019, Prince Philip endorsed the Prince Philip Gordonstoun Foundation , an endowment fund that makes it possible for children from all backgrounds to attend the school and enjoy a life-changing education. Today, approximately one-third of Gordonstoun pupils receive financial assistance to cover tuition fees (up to 110 percent). Gordonstoun is currently forming plans to offer more financial support for lower-income families.

Prince Philip’s Ongoing Relationship With Gordonstoun

Several members of the British royal family attended Gordonstoun after Prince Philip, including his sons Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward. Both Prince Charles and Prince Edward followed in their father’s footsteps at school, also becoming ‘Guardian’. Prince Philip’s daughter, Princess Anne, couldn’t attend Gordonstoun as it only admitted boys when she was a child. However, she is now Gordonstoun’s warden and her children – Prince Philip’s grandchildren – Zara and Peter Phillips also attended the school.

When Prince Philip passed away earlier this year, staff and pupils celebrated his lifelong commitment to Gordonstoun by sailing the school’s yacht out to sea from Hopeman Harbour (where Prince Philip learnt to sail) and laying a memorial wreath in the ocean. The school also released copies of his school photos and reports in advance of his 100 th birthday.

In these report cards, Hahn described Prince Philip’s ‘undefeatable spirit’ and highlights his ‘meticulous attention to detail’. He noted that Prince Philip ‘never lost the childlike quality of becoming absorbed by whatever he tackled, almost to the point of oblivion. And his absorbing activities varied from the captaincy of the First Cricket and First Hockey Elevens to the building of a pigsty and repairing or cleaning jobs on his beloved Prince Louis, the schooner named after his grandfather and baptised by his grandmother’.

Having endured a turbulent childhood outside of school, Prince Philip found a sense of home in Gordonstoun and stayed in touch with the school throughout his life. In 1956, he worked with Hahn to launch the world-famous Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award , which has given over 1.3 million children around the world the chance to enjoy invaluable experiences and develop essential life skills. Prince Philip has since presented many young people who have taken part in the DofE Award with their gold award certificates.

In 2014, Prince Philip returned to Gordonstoun to celebrate the school’s 80 th anniversary. He insisted on queuing for lunch with the pupils instead of having his meal brought to him. And, last year, Gordonstoun’s pupils produced honey and apple juice for Prince Philip, which they sent to the royal family’s holiday home in Balmoral. Prince Philip wrote to let them know he had immediately added their gifts to his breakfast table.

More about Gordonstoun

Gordonstoun is an independent, public school in Moray, Scotland that welcomes pupils from around the world. The co-educational school boasts a tranquil 200-acre campus with a blend of historic and state-of-the-art facilities. Pupils not only enjoy learning in the school’s beautiful landscapes but also make the most of in-classroom industry-standard equipment during their studies. Gordonstoun enrolls around 500 boarders and 100 day students at its junior and senior schools, accommodating children aged 4–18. As a diverse school, only around one-third of the pupils come from Scotland. Another third come from other parts of the UK, and the final third come from overseas.

Gordonstoun’s ethos focuses on building life skills, not just academic skills. The school’s curriculum brims with both traditional subjects and character-building experiences, expeditions, and artistic opportunities. Gordonstoun employs more than 100 instructors, who help pupils excel in virtually any interest and enable them to enjoy one of the lowest pupil-to-instructor ratios in the UK. 96 percent of Gordonstoun graduates go on to pursue higher education opportunities.

Gordonstoun was the inspiration for the Outward Bound Trust , an educational charity that helps over one million young people from all walks of life develop life skills on outdoor learning courses. The school is also a member of the Round Square Conference of Schools , a network of schools that enrich their curriculums with international understanding, service, democracy, adventure, environmental stewardship, and leadership.

Gordonstoun has a yacht and pupils run the fire station. But who on earth goes there?

Gordonstoun School, near Elgin, Moray

A camera lens focuses on a rain-spattered scene: a group of scowling 12-year-olds in sodden waterproofs are putting up tents — badly — in what looks to be a bog. Days later, they finally return: to fall asleep on bunk beds in dormitories far away from home. “For many of them it will be six weeks before they’ll see their families again,” a voiceover explains.

I’m watching a new documentary about the famous boarding school Gordonstoun. Parents pay up to £35,000 a year for this “character education”. To an introvert like me, it looks like hell. Is it a bit like the army, I ask Sabine Richards as nonchalantly as I can.

“Noooo!” Richards chastises me in a friendly, come-along-now tone. She is the school’s

Gordonstoun: A broader curriculum that broadens minds

At Gordonstoun , there is no shortage of experiences that broaden minds. Here, you’ll find pupils volunteering for one of the school’s nine community and rescue services. They respond to emergencies as supervised members of the Coastguard. They let their imaginations run free on canvases. They fend for themselves while camping in the woodlands.

The best part? They enjoy these mentally, physically, and emotionally stimulating activities from the comfort of a place they are proud to call their “second home” — on the beautiful Moray Coast in the North of Scotland, where Gordonstoun is located.

Here, heads, hands, and hearts are connected to ensure when young learners graduate, they aren’t just ready to soar academically, but personally as well. This is the driving force behind Gordonstoun’s efforts to help every child achieve their full potential.

It is also why three generations of the British royal family have walked its halls as students; why it has been described as “Outstanding” and “Sector leading” by HM Inspectors in 2019; and why over 500 students love every day here.

Yet there is a lot to look forward to as a Gordonstoun graduate. Many go on to some of the best universities in the world, the likes of Oxford, Cambridge, Central Saint Martins, MIT, and the Northern School of Music.

These are the outcomes a Gordonstoun education guarantees. Its signature approach to education ensures students develop qualities of compassion, honesty, initiative, a thirst for adventure, and an enduring urge to transform their own lives by bettering those of others.

In fact, every senior student assists in one of the school’s nine community and rescue services. Giving back the Gordonstoun way even takes pupils as far as Kenya, Romania, and Thailand, where students have helped communities while embracing new cultures.

“By the time I worked out what I wanted to do in the field of humanitarian aid and development, the whole ‘community service’ ethos of Gordonstoun started to seem very relevant,” enthuses graduate Matthew Hollingworth , who now serves as the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Country Director in Sudan. “I couldn’t do the job I do now without relishing a challenge and enjoying working in and relying on close-knit teams.”

The Gordonstoun motto is “Plus Est En Vous – There Is More In You.” It is as relevant today as it was when Kurt Hahn, founder of Gordonstoun, created it. Almost a century after its founding, the school maintains its horizon-broadening approach beyond just academic potential.

With a ratio of just seven students per teacher, pupils follow the English GCSE and A Level curricula. Their goal is to reach the pinnacle of their academic potential.

When students are ready to put their textbooks aside, their bodies go to work. Life outside the classroom is a never-ending adventure here.

On its beautiful and safe 200-acre woodland campus in the heart of the Moray countryside, facilities are numerous. These include a state-of-the-art Sports Centre and a Performing Arts department, home to a studio theatre, drama rehearsal spaces and dance studios. On its doorstep lies the Scottish landscape in all its majesty.

It’s the perfect setting to gain life skills through exploration and collaboration. Imagine kayaking, mountain biking, orienteering or skiing here. Or picture an 80-foot yacht sailing from Scotland to Spitsbergen — crewed by a group of flushed faces that are both engaged and in charge.

“Our founder described the sea as his best schoolmaster and today we continue to see the benefits that students accrue from living and working together in challenging ocean conditions,” Principal Lisa Kerr shares.

All of this is part of Gordonstoun’s uniquely broad curriculum. “We want young people to discover who they are, to be comfortable with who they are, and eventually to go beyond who they are.” With Gordonstoun, you’ll go far.

Gordonstoun School: Instilling Students With Adventure and Spirit, Not Just Academic Skills

Five ways that gordonstoun school extends its curriculum beyond the academic..

Having educated students since 1934, Gordonstoun School (Moray, Scotland) is a highly sought-after boarding school with a rich history of well-known alumni, including Prince Philip, the late Duke of Edinburgh, who was one of the school’s first 10 students. Unlike many schools, Gordonstoun offers an educational model that expands well beyond the classroom walls, allowing students to learn in the school’s expansive woodland campus, on its 80-foot sailing boat, and amidst the local beaches and mountains.

Gordonstoun may be widely recognised for its excellent academics , but it’s the independent, coeducational school’s emphasis on character building and developing an adventurous spirit that sets the school apart from other top schools. Since Gordonstoun’s founding, academic ability has only been part of the interlocking set of life skills that the school instils in its students. Staff also encourage students to work in team environments, develop their strength of character, improve their communication skills, develop their resilience, and get involved in the local community. This way, Gordonstoun shapes its students into well-rounded young people who can face all of life’s opportunities and challenges.

Here, we’ll look at five ways that Gordonstoun promotes character building in its curriculum:

1. Sail Training Voyages and Outdoor Activities

One of the unique aspects of Gordonstoun’s curriculum is sailing, which is compulsory for all in Year 9 and above. Students practise sailing in several boats, including Gordonstoun’s training yacht ‘The Ocean Spirit of Moray’. They sail the yacht on expeditions along the Scottish coast and sometimes further afield too. For example, students take a once-in-a-lifetime sailing trip to the Arctic in their senior year, where they explore the effects of climate change on the delicate ecosystem. During their sailing expeditions, students crew the vessel, contribute to its upkeep, and even take some of their academic lessons aboard.

Sailing aside, the rugged Scottish landscape surrounding the school is ideal for students to pursue adventurism . Gordonstoun’s highly experienced team of outdoor education experts regularly escort students on trips into the Scottish Highlands. Students can also engage in outdoor activities like open canoeing, Nordic skiing, bushcraft, and mountain biking. While many young people don’t get to enjoy these experiences at school, Gordonstoun alumni overwhelming applaud the school’s focus on outdoor education. In a recent survey by the Moray House School of Education at the University of Edinburgh, 94% of the 1,000 former students interviewed said that Gordonstoun’s outdoor activities had a positive effect on their personal growth and development.

“Sailing and expeditions are not optional extras but core parts of the curriculum,” says Gordonstoun’s Principal Lisa Kerr. “We believe that the best classrooms don’t have walls, and it’s by facing challenges and going beyond their comfort zone that our students find out that they’re capable of more than they thought possible.”

2. Volunteering and Community Service

Altruism and community service are also important aspects of a Gordonstoun education. Staff encourage students to be active in the local community by volunteering their time to charitable and service organisations. All students volunteer in one of nine community and rescue services. While some clean beaches or play music for elderly care home residents, others raise money for local charities or take part in Gordonstoun’s fully operational in-house fire service.

Students also take their efforts overseas: Gordonstoun participates in several service projects in Romania, Kenya, and Thailand, which help students gain a better understanding of issues that affect those who live in other parts of the world.

3. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Gordonstoun is the home of the infamous Duke of Edinburgh’s Award , a programme that helps students achieve personal growth and develop their confidence. Prince Philip developed the Award with Gordonstoun’s former headmaster, Dr Kurt Hahn, who originally put students through the Moray Badge — a test of character and endurance — in the school’s early days.

Instead of pitting students against one another, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award encourages students to beat their personal bests in a range of individual and team-based challenges, tasks, and expeditions. The Award is so successful that over 140 schools around the globe now also offer the Award to their students.

4. International Education

All Gordonstoun students complete an International and Spiritual Citizenship course, which covers topics like health education, spiritual development, environmental issues, and life skills from an international perspective. On top of this, Gordonstoun seniors can study in other countries and take part in international exchange and volunteer programmes. These educational initiatives are representative of Gordonstoun’s diverse community: The school welcomes students of a variety of backgrounds, religions, and socio-economic circumstances.

“We have ambitions to grow this further and already have a significant number of students from very modest backgrounds, including a number from Rwanda,” Kerr says.

5.     Round Square

Gordonstoun is one of the founding Round Square schools, a network of 190 schools around the world that subscribe to the tenets of teaching responsibility on top of academics. Round Square also offers students opportunities to attend global and regional conferences and to participate in international service projects.

What Makes Gordonstoun School Special

Gordonstoun’s mission to educate young people beyond academia gives the school a unique edge over others. The school’s 300+ members of staff teach, support, and nurture 500 boarding students in a home-away-from-home environment, giving Gordonstoun one of the lowest student-to-instructor ratios in the UK. As a result of the school’s dedication to each student’s well-being and progress, many Gordonstoun alumni go on to achieve places at top universities around the world and flourish in exciting, adventurous careers.

Pinta, 56 ton yawl ex Gordonstoun School

  • Add to quote

Does anyone have any information about the Pinta, in particular, what happened to her after she left Gordonstoun School? In the early 1950's this vessel was owned jointly by my Dad, Robert McRae and his friend George Christie, both former seamen. They had purchased her from a member of the Coleman's mustard family. Initially she was berthed in the Bowling basin of the Forth and Clyde canal and we spent countless weekends there working on her. Then she was moved round to a mooring at Rhu and from there we sailed extensively around the west coast of Scotland. By the mid 1950's both men were becoming too involved in their respective businesses and she was sold. Is she still afloat?

Welcome aboard, Fraser. I moved your post into it's own thread for a better response. Find your way around the ship and enjoy the voyage.

Regret don't know what happened to Pinta or for that matter the Soldian (the other Gordonstoun training Yacht). Sailed on Pinta summer 1963 around West coast of Scotland , Summer Isles & Stornoway, great vessel would love to know what happened to her. Skipper at that time was ex Rn lt com Shaw. Our crew on that voyage as far as I can remember was Bruce Lucas,Godfrey Bryson, myself, (all presea training) Ray Illingworth, a little fellow and Prince Charles. brgds Alistair

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

Responsibility

Education must enable young people to effect what they have recognized to be right. Kurt Hahn, Founder of Gordonstoun

Today’s children will be responsible for shaping the future of the world. It’s not something to be taken lightly, which is why at Gordonstoun we give students the opportunity to take up a variety of responsibilities.

This teaches them about the importance of looking out for others, whether as a team or form captain, a classmate or member of a boarding house. They’ll be encouraged to support new students, keep dormitories tidy, clear the refectory, crew our 80 foot yacht and lead a range of teams to victory.

We help them grow into compassionate individuals who are unafraid of stepping up to a challenge. Our students leave Gordonstoun ready to become capable, confident members of a diverse and challenging global community.

The school guides them towards being leaders. HM Inspectors, 2019 - Education Scotland

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
