Brazil Yacht Charter

Explore the yachting oasis of Brazil’s Green Coast

One of the best-kept yacht charter secrets in the Atlantic, Brazil is slowly gaining popularity as a luxury yacht destination, and it’s easy to see why. Along this gorgeous stretch of Atlantic Coastline, you’ll find thousands of beaches, bays, natural harbors, and islands, most of which are uninhabited. Sunshine is plentiful, the emerald waters are calm and crystalline, the ever-present breeze is warm and gentle, and the culture is unique and welcoming, enticing travelers from around the world to this cultural melting pot. From the original natives and 16 th  Century Portuguese explorers, to more recent immigrants from Japan, Italy, France, Germany, and Lebanon, Brazil is a fusion of ethnicities, offering a dynamic variety of cultural, historical, and dining experiences.

Angra dos Reis, or Bay of Kings, in the state of Rio de Janeiro is the perfect place to begin your voyage. Sheltered by the large island of Ilha Grande, the gorgeous bay is home to more than 300 islands, and the short distances between them offer infinite spots to stop off and enjoy snorkeling, diving, or swimming. Venture ashore to enjoy a private picnic or beach barbecue prepared by your chef, or explore rainforest trails leading to cascading waterfalls and immerse yourself in the splendor within. Brazil is so much more than Rio and Ipanema, and your luxury yacht is waiting to take you there.

Arrive in Angra dos Reis via charter flight or helicopter from Rio de Janeiro, and head to Marina Verolme to meet your yacht and crew. Enjoy a celebratory cocktail on board as your captain makes way to the village of Abraão on Ilha Grande, where you can sample the local “feijoada” (bean and meat stew). With more than 100 stunning beaches, countless scenic hiking trails, and lush mountainous landscapes, it’s the perfect spot to venture ashore and explore.

Cruising along coast from Angra to Paraty, you’ll have your choice of anchorages, each one more beautiful than the next. Explore the landlocked cove of Saco do Céu, find a spot to anchor, and then head ashore for a forested hike and a swim under a waterfall. Continue to the enchanting city of Paraty, where you’ll find art galleries, famous restaurants, jazz clubs, and several bars with lively samba dancing.

Ilha da Cotia

Take a quick jaunt to Praia Grande for sunbathing on its stunning sandy beach, kayaking in the gorgeous waters, or simply strolling along the coast. Set out for Saco do Mamanguá, home to Brazil’s only fjord, with majestic towering rock walls jutting into the lush rainforest, and then continue to Ilha da Cotia to find a secluded anchorage and take in the panorama around you.

Lush views of Ilha da Cotia on a Brazil yacht charter

Ilha de Paquetá

Brightly adorned horse-drawn carriages are the only “vehicles” you’ll see, as no cars are permitted in this quaint, leisurely village. For a chance of pace, dine at Chez Dominique, serving up the best French food in the region.

As you make way back toward Ilha Grande, stop off at one of the many islands in the Baía da Ribeira, an idyllic spot to swim or splash around with the yacht’s water toys. Anchor out near Araçatiba, known for its abundant fishing and reflective aquamarine waters that may turn phosphorescent at night.

If weather conditions are favorable, take a counterclockwise turn towards Aventureiro, a rugged bay surrounded by tumbled boulders forming serene pools. Continue to Parnaioca, a nature-lover’s paradise, where a flowing river finds its way down to the unspoiled beach. Cruise around to the tip of Ilha Grande to Palmas and find a serene anchorage, enjoy a cocktail on deck, and take in the beautiful views.

Angra dos Reis

After navigating through this beautiful oasis of more than 300 islands, return to Angra for your ride to São Paulo for some last-minute shopping and dining. Or head to Rio de Janeiro to take in landmarks, such as the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. However you choose to end your journey, it will surely be the perfect finale.

Yacht Charter Brazil! Yacht Vacation Rental in Brazil

The trade wind creates ideal conditions for a vast sailing trip along the coast..

brazil swimming on vacation

The perfect Brazilian yacht-charter takes you to a tropical paradise full of bays and beaches! A perfect starting point on the east coast of Brazil is the modern Marina Verolme , which is only a half hour drive from Rio de Janeiro and is located about two  hours  from the airport. Many American cities, like New York and Chicago, offer flights with one stop, with a travel time of about 15 hours. Anchored in the port’s azure water are several sailboats for rent and charter catamarans which can be booked through Yachtico.com’s easy and convenient booking service. With the proper  equipment, a very special journey begins with exploring the beautiful landscape of the South American coast. For fans of high speeds, Yachtico recommends the sleek catamaran charters in Brazil. Catamarans have no keel so they weigh less and are able to travel swiftly through the water.  Paramount conditions and countless dreamlike corners between Rio de Janeiro and the Evergreen, are discovered further south in national parks along the water.  Here, one of the most  beautiful stretches of coastline that Brazil has to offer is the Costa Verde. The Costa Verde offers around 240 kilometers of  breathtaking scenery with more than 60 small offshore islands and all kinds of small towns with romantic colonial style architecture. Paraty is a popular stop among yacht charters in Brazil because of its small town feel and proximity to the marina. Downtown Paraty was  constructed in the 1950’s. Also, the town is a Brazilian national monument and is largely closed to traffic. Therefore, Paraty offers a relaxing stroll through the clean streets where a variety of cultural highlights are waiting. From public readings, art exhibitions, music festivals filled with jazz and blues musicians, Paraty contains everything desired for culture enthusiasts. But there are other things to do by the sea that are equally fascinating. In particular, dive guides recommend where fish and sea turtles can be observed. Next to the sea, the Mata Atlantica Coastal Forest provides accessible, comfortable hiking trails to magnificent waterfalls. These superb hiking trails provide up close experiences with indigenous wildlife and vegetation.

Discovery tour between the metropolitan regions – Vacation for the senses!

brazil vacation

The best time for sailing in Brazil is in the months of April and May, as well as September through the beginning of November . Towards the end of the year  there are an increased number of rain showers. However, immediately after the first ray of sunshine peaks through the rain clouds, Brazil will return to its paradise identity. During the day, pleasant winds blow on shore between four and five Beaufort, while the maximum temperature may rise to as high as 35° Celsius (95° Fahrenheit). However, the yacht charter area off the Costa Verde provides refreshing breezes. Apart from the heat of the day, there are weak winds in the area and in which swells occur rarely, making for smooth sailing in this part of Brazil. The water temperature varies between 17° Celsius (63° Fahrenheit) in the winter and a comfortable 28° Celsius (83° Fahrenheit) in the summer. Because the trade wind constantly blows throughout the entire year, it is possible to explore both southern and northern regions of the coast, sailing in either direction. However, the rule of thumb for sailing in Brazil is always: in summer go south and in winter go north. For experienced sailors, there are countless islands, bays, fjords, lagoons and marinas that provide a challenge and welcome you with over 100 accessible beaches. Anchor your yacht charter in the Brazilian waters and begin to dream. In every case, be sure to keep your appropirate travel documents that are distributed on the plane because they are not only needed at the exit, but also many times at the harbor landings. If you are uncertain about regulations in a particular city, a native skipper or even an entire crew can be booked, along with your Brazilian yacht rental at Yachtico.com. Certainly this is not a poor idea because the locals can provide all sorts of useful advice, like Brazilian cuisine. Your taste buds will celebrate when you eat the most famous dish of the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro , “Moqueca Capixaba.” This seafood stew is traditionally served with fish, onions, garlic, tomatoes, while shrimp, crab or lobster can also be used in the stew. Rice accompanies this dish as a side and the meal is completed with the Cuzcuz dessert, a sweet pudding, and a freshly made Caipirinha.

Dancing, relaxing and amazement in São Paulo and Rio City!

São Paulo is Brazil’s largest city with over 11 million residents .   As the result of immigrants from around the world, especially from Portugal, Italy, Japan and Germany, São Paulo is a multicultural and fascinating city. Not without reason, São Paulo is often compared to New York City. São Paulo contains large and luxurious hotels that invite tourists from around the world to witness the beautiful sights of the area over a few days. The historic buildings and famous theatres are a few of the remnants of the early 20 th century, which was mainly inspired by the Italian opera. The “Museum of Fine Arts” or also known as “Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo,” harbors South America’s most extraordinary art collection. Centuries old sculptures, impressive alters, marvelous paintings, intricate furniture, golden chalices and crosses, can all be seen in the museum’s exciting exhibitions. Without question, the best vantage point to witness fabulous panoramic views of Sao Paulo is atop the 168 meter-tall, “Edificio Italia.” Whether you are on the roof, or dining in the Italian restaurant that provides panoramic views of São Paulo, you will witness pristine views of the city. You will observe the soccer stadium of FC São Paulo and the Autodrome Jose Carlo Pace, where every year the “Grand Prix of Brazil” is held.   Rio de Janeiro may only have half as many people, but Brazil’s second largest metropolis on the east coast contains just as many exciting attractions. The name of the city, which was Brazil’s capital until 1960, is Portuguese for “River of January.” The best way to explore the surroundings is by bicycle tours along the beaches. Rio de Janeiro is full of the life during both night and day. Visit one of the many beach bars and witness the city’s hustle and bustle up close with a drink from an ice-cooled coconut. The subway makes this modern and impressive center of Rio de Janeiro easily accessible. Why Rio de Janeiro is known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world makes the ambivalence clear. For example, the high-rise buildings with mirrored facades stand next to restored colonial buildings; while in between, there is always room for a pretty park and an occasional monastery.  Visitors are always welcome to attend religious services, and it is possible that the priest is American and provides an entertaining sermon . The “love of life” attitude rubs off on all people. With an aged street car, go on a breath taking route to higher elevations where it is quieter and offers a great view of the bay, in which Rio is settled on. A visit to the most famous landmark of the city, the 38-meter tall statue of Jesus, is a must for believers and non-believers alike. Enjoy views of the city that are like no other on earth. Who knows? You may spot your Brazilian yacht charter floating in the harbor! Furthermore, if you design your charter itinerary to put you in Rio de Janeiero around Ash Wednesday, you will have the pleasure of experiencing Karneval. The multi-colored parade of samba schools is one of the largest festivals in the world.

Yacht charter Brazil - a professional yacht rental from the classic sailing yacht to the luxurious catamaran, your wishes have no limits and if a city is no longer sufficient or a relaxing day on a deserted bay is planned, then freely sail the open water.

Brazil has over 190 million residents, making it the most populous country in all of South America, while extending more than 8,500,000 square kilometers. This South American country where Portuguese is primarily spoken features a special holiday destination that has remained largely untouched by mass tourism. Brazil offers everything from green forests, dry prairies, secluded bays and endless sandy beaches, to historical colonial buildings, mysterious Inca cities, modern marinas, and bustling night life. The great navigator Amerigo Vespucci once wrote about the Brazilian coast in his diary, “If the terrestrial paradise is in some part of this land, it cannot be very far from the coast we visited.” You are free to explore the Brazilian interior with the entitled capital city, yet it is the Brazilian coast that draws the country’s cultural abundances together. Due to the hot and humid tropical climate of the east coast, the Brazilian social life takes place on the beautiful sandy beaches. At the sight of the azure waters of the Atlantic and year-round average temperature of about 27° Celsius (81° Fahrenheit), it takes sooner rather than later to dive into the refreshing sea. Palm trees, sun and slim bikinis – a fresh breeze helps keep a cool head. Here you will find everything for watersport enthusiasts: diving and snorkel lessons, Jet Ski rentals, surf lessons and of course, a professional yacht charter in Brazil.

Hello Amanda! Back home and already in the office… Amazing crew and boat! We all had a great time! Olav sure is a very capable captain, manager and team builder. He has everything under control without much stress. Giordana is a great chief hostess, excellent singer and bar-woman!!! We had lots of fun with her shows and great hangovers with her Negronis and Dirty Dry Martinis. Bernadette is the perfect stewardess… very discreet and lovely at the same time, and always there for us... Rich is the best chef we had so far. He really spoilt the kids... I’ll need two months to recover from his homemade breads… Sean and Mathew are great guys, they were always there for us in the back of the boat… The boat was very well maintained… should also thank Jorge and Tricia. I would definitely recommend these guys to any of my friends. The boat, although a 1993 vessel, is very well made (Hessen) and maintained. RM MY BRAZIL / Croatia / 16 – 23 July

Already want to come aboard?

So, what are some of our favourite Brazilian destinations for a boat rental?

To start off on the right foot, how about a boat tour of the Wonderful City? The city of Rio de Janeiro is well known for its parties, carnivals and the little we see on TV, but in reality it is much more than that. Guanabara Bay, for example, is one of the most beautiful in the world, and may be the starting point of your next sailing trip along the coast of Brazil. Besides having the opportunity to see the famous beaches of Rio (Copacabana, Ipanema, Barra da Tijuca etc) in a super unusual way, from Guanabara Bay you can have a spectacular view of Sugar Loaf, Corcovado and Christ the Redeemer, not to mention the possibility to watch the sunset at Arpoador Beach right from the deck of your own boat! For the more adventurous and surf lovers, it is worth going to Praia do Pontal or Praia de Itacoatiara (in Niterói) to catch some waves!

Now on the Green Coast of Rio de Janeiro, our next stop is Angra dos Reis! More specifically starting with Ilha Grande, the largest and most famous island in the municipality of Angra, which holds 365 islands! Starting at Lopes Mendes Beach, which is one of the most popular in Angra dos Reis and one of the most beautiful in the country, followed by the wonderful Caxadaço Beach, more hidden than the others, or the beautiful Pouso Beach or Praia do Aventureiro. To escape from the excitement, Jaconema Beach and Dois Rios Beach are among the quietest in the region.

Gipóia Island, closer to the city centre, is home to the famous Praia do Denstista, which with its calm and crystalline waters is home to fun for all tastes. Do you travel with children? Do you want to practice water sports like wakeboard or water-ski? Do you just want to take a dip and sunbathe? This beach is a must stop.

The Botinas Islands offer an even more paradisiacal look, if you can imagine. Its crystal clear waters reach up to 10 meters deep, a must-see place for those who want to go snorkeling or diving and meet the native fauna and flora of the region!

Still on the Green Coast of Rio de Janeiro, it is essential to talk about the charming city of Paraty. Among the tours required to know Paraty well, the boat tour is for sure the most fun! Call your friends and rent a boat to know all the beaches and islands of the region, especially Praia do Sono and Praia dos Antigos, not to mention a super unusual tour to Saco do Mamanguá, maybe even a trail to Pico do Pão de Açúcar. Enjoy the boat ride to know also the surrounding islets, such as the Cotton Island and Cutia Island.

If your desire is to take a tour of the Brazilian coast from north to south, we suggest you not to miss Cacimba do Padre, in Fernando de Noronha, one of the best places to enjoy the day in calmness Praia do Espelho in Porto Seguro, a place with a paradisiacal appearance and the most powerful energy in Brazil; Jericoacoara, a place that looks like a movie set, with its dunes, sands and natural pools, and many other beaches and surreal coves that deserve to be in your list!

A country formed by nature, culture and a lot of character opens its doors for you to know all its corners. The best way to travel from island to island and beach to beach? By boat! The immense variety of landscapes of this place will not pass a second without wanting to know more, regardless of if your interest is for a sunny day, the practice of water sports, the exploration of natural beauty and unique marine life, Click&Boat offers boats and equipment for tours of all kinds!

What types of yacht can you rent in Brazil?

All types of yachts are available for charter in Brazil with Click&Boat!

Motorboats and semirigids are perfect types of boats for faster, usually day trips. They are compact boats that offer great maneuverability and generally, speed, that is, they offer an infinite variety of activities! From coastal tours, water sports, access to the most remote beaches and coves, or shallow waters, everything is possible on board a motorboat!

To sail in total freedom and authenticity, a sailboat is the best choice. Feel the waves of the sea, the breeze on your face, study the winds and the tide, do the maneuvers and raise the sails, a lot of work comes with sailing a sailboat, but the experience is worth it!

Family holidays require space, and none of the above boats offer more space than a catamaran. A multi-hull sailboat, the catamaran distributes its weight, and space, between two hulls, making it not only more spacious, but also lighter and more stable. In other words, perfect for quiet family sailing!

Renting a yacht is the apex of luxury in your navigation! Perfect for getting to know the Brazilian Coast with everything you're entitled to. Space and comfort of home, spacious sun deck, flybridge for a priceless view and much more!

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Brazil

When it comes to your sailing adventure in Brazil with Yachting.Rent, both sailing boats and catamarans offer distinctive experiences and benefits.

Sailing boats, with their slender and elegant design, give you a sense of harmony with the sea. They are ideal for those looking for a more traditional sailing experience, allowing for better maneuverability and an intimate connection with the ocean. Whether you’re navigating Brazil’s vibrant coastline or exploring the tranquil waters of its many islands, a sailing boat can offer a uniquely immersive experience.

On the other hand, catamarans, known for their stability and spaciousness, provide a comfortable platform for leisurely exploration. Brazil yacht charter.

Brazil provides a wide range of cultures, evergreen national parks, refreshing caipirinhas, paradise bays, and sailing areas for beginners and advanced sailors. Thanks to these tropical climates and the steady trade winds, this area provides a year-round yacht charter opportunity.

Some reasons, why Brasil is a good sailing destination:

  • Strong infrastructure
  • Optimum Wind Conditions
  • Advanced Navigation
  • A broad range of wildlife
  • Variety of conditions of weather

Brazil is broad both in terms of area and population. It is the fifth-largest country globally and has a population of around 200 million; Brazil is the most populous country in South America, is adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean, and shares its borders with every South American country other than Chile Ecuador. The country’s name derives from the Portuguese word ‘Brasa,’ which means ‘gloss,’ referring to Brazil’s woods and color. During the Colonial era, this wood was commonly found in the wilderness along the Atlantic coast, providing an essential commercial commodity for the area used for dyeing fabrics. Brazil has an area of 8.5 million kilometers, the currency is called Real, and the official language is Portuguese. Owing to the high immigration rate, there are also a variety of minority languages spoken in Brazil. Some Brazilians speak English, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. Brazil’s southern coastal regions are the most heavily populated areas where the coffee plantation landscape dominates the metropolitan regions of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Brazil, with its 62 national parks, is the most species-rich country in the world. However, due to the Brazilian Rainforest’s deforestation, these animals and plant species are increasingly at risk.

Brazil’s Environment & Weather

In the summer, the climate in the charter region of the east coast of Brazil is characterized by moderate winds and high temperatures. Average temperatures in the months between April and October are around 25 ° Celsius (77 ° Fahrenheit); however, temperatures are frequently above 30 ° Celsius (86 ° Fahrenheit) between November and March. The best time to sail in Brazil is April – May, and September through to the beginning of November. The water temperatures increase to a tropical climate of 28 ° Celsius (82 ° Fahrenheit). Sailing records carry evidence of a persistent sea-breeze, where the winds blow at around 19 knots, causing swelling infrequently. However, rain showers are expected in Brazil, and weather changes are likely all the time. Heavy rain is expected from time to time during the summer.

Navigating Conditions

It is possible to navigate Brazil all year round. However, Brazil’s navigation conditions are best in the summer, although some boaters prefer to sail in the spring and autumn. The sea temperature is around 28 degrees Celsius on average during the summer, but in the south of the country, temperatures will fall below 16 degrees during the winter.

During the summer in Brazil, winds from the north blow daily at a speed of 12 knots. The wind is always low between Rio de Janeiro and Florianópolis. In winter, look out for the “pampeiros,” a violent wind with speeds of up to 60 knots.

Boat rental is starting to grow more in Brazil. Still, motor boating is the main activity (apart from fishing). 80 percent of the Brazilian fleet is made up of motorboats .

Getting around

The local language is Brazilian Portuguese (not Spanish, not European Portuguese).

Timekeeping in Brazil is very versatile. It is typical and socially acceptable to arrive 30 minutes later than expected.

Buses operate daily between the city of Rio de Janeiro and Angra dos Reis. The bus arrives at the main entrance of Marina Verolme, and from there, it’s about 500m to the docks. The bus company from Rio de Janeiro to Angra dos Reis and Paraty is Costa Verde Transport. To get off at the marina bus stop, tell the driver in advance. It is not recommended to rent a car in Brazil.

Between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro

The new Marina Verolme is the ideal starting point for a more extended charter cruise. By car, it’s just thirty minutes away from Rio de Janeiro and roughly two hours away from Rio de Janeiro airport. With either a catamaran or a sailboat, going alone or sailing with an accomplished captain and crew, Brazil’s east coast is flexibly sculpted. The town of Paraty is the favorite stop among many sailors. Partay has 37,000 residents and is situated on the stunning Costa Verde. This small town has a charming old colonial atmosphere that has become a national monument. Besides, regular traffic in the city is blocked, so a calming walk through the old town with its music festivals and art exhibitions is strongly recommended.

On the other side, the multicultural São Paulo is waiting with its 11 million inhabitants. São Paulo has a lot of excitement and nightlife, so it is also compared to New York City. The best view of the skyline of São Paulo is definitely at the top of the 168-meter-high “Edificio Italia” hotel, which also contains an excellent Italian restaurant with panoramic views of the city. Boredom does not occur here, mainly when the annual Rios City Carnival occurs. During the carnival, the town is transformed into a single, vast, colorful group.

There are many fascinating stopovers and sights in Brazil: Salvador de Bahia, Fortaleza, Ocean Island, Rio de Janeiro, Ilha Grande, Vitória, the Amazon, Rio Grande do Sul, Santiago do Iguape … Tropical plants, sparkling waters, and sandy dune-lined beaches guarantee a memorable trip to Brazil.

Brazil is a huge country, therefore it has a considerable climatic variety. There are some remarkable differences from region to region. Northern Brazil is crossed by the Equator. So in much of the country, the seasons are reversed in comparison with Europe or North America. There is no winter season and no period in which it is particularly dry.

The country can be divided into three main climatic regions. Equatorial, with year-round rains in the Amazon Basin and the coastal area. Tropical with a dry season in the vast central area and the northern portion). Finally the almost Mediterranean area, with temperate winters and hot summers in the south. In the summer the average temperatures range from 30 to 33 °C. In the winter, the normal average temperatures range from 10 to 20 °C.

For Haitian diaspora, gang violence back home is personal as hopes dim for eventual return

When Vivianne Petit Frere fled her native Haiti for Brazil in 2019 and later walked through the Panamanian jungle and on to Mexico, where she opened a restaurant, she always believed she would eventually return home. Until now.

With gang violence wracking Haiti , many of the more than 1 million who have left the Caribbean nation feel helpless when they call terrified family members who can’t leave because airports are closed and crossing to the United States by sea is too risky.

“Before, you could say things were OK. I knew things weren’t OK, but I had faith, hope that it would change one day. We lost faith. There is no path forward because of the gangs,” Petit Frere, 36, said at a table of the restaurant she runs in downtown Tijuana with her husband, who also fled Haiti.

The escalating unrest has reverberated among those who left Haiti for Brazil, Chile, Mexico and the United States. As their hopes of returning home dim, decisions lie ahead on how the U.S. responds to the turmoil in the country long plagued by political upheaval, widespread poverty and natural disasters.

A devastating earthquake in 2010 sent many Haitians to Brazil and Chile. When Brazil’s economy tanked in 2016, Haitians were one of the first nationalities to make the perilous trek through Panama’s Darien Gap to the United States, some crossing the border from Tijuana to San Diego and settling in the U.S. with others who came before them, largely in Miami, New York and Boston.

Haitian Bridge Alliance has been contacting immigrants in the United States and Canada and finding many have family trapped in gang warfare, said Guerline Jozef, the advocacy group’s executive director, whose childhood neighborhood in Haiti was ravaged in attacks. Her cousin was killed by gangs last year.

“It’s not something that we’re reading on the news. It’s something that happened to my own family and that’s the reality for the majority of people in the diaspora. You start hearing the realities of my cousin, my mom, my sister, my dad, and that becomes very personal,” Jozef said.

Standing on a street corner in Miami’s “Little Haiti,” security guard Jude Guillalime said he speaks often with his two children in Haiti, who recently went two days without food or water. They ask if they can join him in Florida. He tells them not to worry.

“Everything is bad, terrible,” said Guillalime, 47, a legal resident in the United States who applied this year for his children to come to Florida.

The U.S. is the top destination for Haitian migrants, and President Joe Biden’s carrot-and-stick approach to immigration — promoting new and expanded legal pathways while discouraging illegal crossings — has largely worked as intended with Haitians, despite critics of his unprecedented use of “parole” authority to grant entry on humanitarian grounds.

About 151,000 Haitians arrived at a U.S. airport after applying online with a financial sponsor through February, an option that is also available to Cubans, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans.

Illegal land crossings from Mexico by Haitians plunged as more entered on two-year parole with eligibility to work. Haitians accounted for only 0.02% of 140,000 Border Patrol arrests in February.

The drop in illegal crossings has led to fewer deportation flights to Haiti, about one a month over the past year, according to Witness at the Border, an advocacy group that tracks flight data. That’s down from daily flights in the immediate aftermath of an encampment of 16,000 largely Haitian migrants that formed in the small Texas border town of Del Rio in 2021.

The administration also renewed and expanded Temporary Protected Status for about 150,000 Haitians under a law that allows people already in the United States to remain if conditions created by natural disaster or civil strife are considered unsafe. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas must decide whether to renew Temporary Protected Status before it expires this year.

Last week, the Coast Guard returned 65 refugees to Haiti after stopping them near the Bahamas, and the Homeland Security Department said its current policy to return migrants intercepted at sea will continue.

“At this time, irregular migration flows through the Caribbean remain low,” the department said in a statement.

Tijuana was a stop for thousands of Haitians who arrived in 2016 to wait for then-President Barack Obama to grant entry on parole. Many bided time in a hardscrabble neighborhood, renamed “Little Haiti,” while working in car washes, restaurants and factories that produce goods for export to the United States.

Since then, Haitians have spread out across the city and obtained legal status in Mexico, where Haitians are one of the largest nationalities seeking asylum and their children are Mexican citizens by birthright.

Petit Frere planned to live in the United States but met her husband during her second week in Tijuana. The couple had a son in Mexico, making all three Mexican citizens.

“I came with my American dream, but Tijuana claimed me,” Petit Frere said with a laugh as cooks worked from a menu that includes polenta with black beans and fried fish with banana. An evangelical Christian church two blocks away offers Sunday services in Creole, a sign of how Haitian culture has permeated the city.

Many Haitians stay in Mexican border cities only a short time, perhaps a night or two at hotels near a border crossing after getting an appointment on the CBP One online appointment app that was introduced last year. The app is open to all nationalities, but location software requires being in Mexico City or somewhere north to apply.

CBP One awards 1,450 entries a day with a date two weeks ahead, including about 400 at Tijuana’s border crossing. The vast majority of about 100 migrants with evening appointments on one recent day were Haitian. They waited in a large plaza, some wearing baseball caps and sweatshirts with logos of the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Denver Broncos.

Jackson Cisrode, 26, had just spoken with the 4-year-old son he left with family in Haiti because he couldn’t afford the travel. He flew last year on one of since-suspended charter flights from Haiti to Nicaragua, avoiding the Panamanian jungle and making his way through Mexico, often walking.

Cisrode said he hoped to earn enough money in the United States to bring his son. He joined others in line when a Mexican immigrant agent emerged from a parking lot and shouted, “Is everyone ready?”

They smiled as they wheeled suitcases with backpacks over their shoulders and flashed appointment papers while authorities directed them to a secure area for processing into the United States.

This story has been updated to correct the location of attack on Guerline Jozef’s childhood home to Haiti, not Port-au-Prince.

Associated Press writer Gisela Salomon in Miami contributed to this report.

While a yacht may be the first thing that pops to mind when you think of the ultra-wealthy, chartering one might not be as expensive as you think. When you're splitting the costs between several family members or friends you are paying for transportation and stay and it can make sense financially.

You can also  keep money in your wallet  by selecting an older vessel or taking charge of sailing yourself (hiring a crew always costs extra).

So let’s take a look at options that may be within reach for people who aren’t living paycheck to paycheck but aren’t brunching with the Kardashians either.

Editor's note: prices are subject to change and may vary depending on the time of the year.
