Ownership Redefined For The Sharing Community: Sharing Is The New Owning!

Our current ideal of owning as much “stuff” as we can and of over consumption is being replaced with a new ideal of shared use and ownership. It gives people access to a lifestyle that they otherwise might not be able to afford, and it reduces waste. Imagine owning and sailing your own luxury catamaran for less than 20% of what conventional yacht ownership or bareboat charter would usually cost you! Not only does it save you money but it eliminates the waste of an asset sitting idle for months, collecting dust AND problems. 

That is exactly what this program is designed to do! Fractional or Shared Yacht Ownership gives you the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of yacht ownership for a fraction of the cost of conventional ownership or even charter! Shared yacht ownership is exactly what it sounds like—you buy a share or fraction of a yacht. It is not a timeshare where you only purchase the rights of usage for a certain amount of time and end up with nothing when the term expires. With shared ownership you legally own the fraction of the asset and hold the title to the yacht.

It holds the answer to hassle-free and financially smart boat ownership. It’s a simple concept— up to five co-owners can enjoy the benefits of owning a yacht while splitting the cost of the vessel and its management. It is the simplest way to realize your sailing dreams sooner than you otherwise could and with the least hassle. You can use the yacht as you like and your preferred holidays are always available for you.

Shared Catamaran Ownership is Appealing But…

People have been forming partnerships to co-own expensive assets for a long time, but until now they have had to figure out the logistics themselves. The benefits of shared ownership are very appealing, but it’s been too cumbersome for most to set up. Finding the right partners, setting up partnerships, and managing the logistics of owning a shared asset can be time consuming and difficult. We have created a program that makes the entire process easier and makes shared ownership available to everyone.

Fractional / Shared Yacht Ownership Structure

Number of owners.

Up to five owners each buys a share in a luxury yacht at a fraction of the cost. Unlike timeshare programs where you do not own the yacht and end up with nothing at the end, this program ensures that you have an equity stake in the yacht and hold title of the vessel. We limit the shares to only five owners per boat or less. That way all owners are guaranteed to get equal time. Because owners of fractional shares involve direct ownership, each user has greater control over how the boat is used and maintained and where it is located.

Duration Of The Program

Duration of the program is 7 years. The boat will be sold at the end of the program. Upon the sale of the asset, the owners recover a percentage of their initial cost and will be proportionally refunded from the net proceeds. The owner is free to sell their ownership interest at any time. Since fractional yachts are well maintained and serviced, the value of each owner’s share may not devalue as rapidly as an average yacht’s value.

Owner Weeks & Cost Per Share

Partners own 20% of the boat in an LLC, boat is financed, and chartered through a charter company based in the British Virgin Islands or Bahamas. Partners get to use it two weeks a year plus anytime it’s not booked within 30 days out for a total of 10-15 weeks for the duration of the program.  Each week retails for $12K which is waived. Partners only pay cleaning and insurance and variable weekly costs.

Fractional Yacht Owner Use

Owner use is shared equally between the owners according to the number of members. Owner access is allocated fairly to ensure that all owners can optimize the use of the yacht and that all the owners get quality time on the yacht to meet their needs or desires.

• Owner Use Reservations: Owners will reserve time on a reservation system on first come basis (Member A, Member B etc.) with limitations. Dates are decided upon via an equal reservation system well in advance. The first co-owner who signs up becomes “A” in the rotation, the second person “B,” and so on during the first year. The next year, the co-owner who was “A” and had first choice becomes “E”
• Owner Use Limitations: It is envisaged that the maximum continuous owner use will be two weeks per year per owner
• Owner Competency: A competency check will be done with each owner after which owners will operate the vessel as their private yacht. No captain or further supervision will be required once competency is established (training is available should the owner wish to improve skills). If owners wish to hire captains for their use, they may do so at their own cost.
• Reciprocal Use: The plan is to develop co-ownership bases in other locations that will create a reciprocal owner use option. Potential locations currently being investigated –Bahamas (Marsh Harbor), Puerto Rico, Annapolis, USVI (St Thomas). To start, the only location will be Fort Lauderdale, which has easy access to the Bahamas and the Florida Keys cruising grounds.

Operating Costs Are Covered By Charter Revenue

The annual operating costs such as insurance, dockage, annual haul out and scheduled maintenance will be offset by income from chartering the yacht. With traditional yacht ownership, the owner spends around 10 percent of the total value of the yacht annually but with our model based on seven years, one can save up to 90 percent of the cost of traditional yacht ownership. That is a huge advantage for the owners of a fractional yacht.

The latest catamaran models from the world’s top manufacturers like Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot, Nautitech and Bali are available for these programs, fully equipped with air-conditioning, generator, full electronics, dingy, outboard and sun awnings. 

Fractional Yacht Management & Maintenance

The vessel will be professionally managed and maintained by a management company to ensure that you enjoy your use of the boat with minimum hassle – boats are maintained in turn key condition and ready for you to step aboard.

Some of the early fractional yacht business models were guilty of taking advantage of the shareholders, and plenty have failed along the way. They would take a boat with a market price of say $2 million and divide it into 10 shares of $400,000, thereby doubling their investment by selling it for a total of $4 million. When chartering a catamaran in Greece you can chose between three different sailing areas: In the Ionian Islands , you will find charter companies with bases in Marina Gouvia on Corfu . In Corfu are about 30 catamarans available for your boating vacation to select from. Further charter fleets offer multihull charters from Preveza at the main coast and Lefkas Island. The biggest selection of sailboat catamarans are available from Marina Alimos in Kalamaki near Athens . From the Marina Alimos in Kalamaki you can rent around 100 catamarans to start your sailing holiday into the Cyclades Islands . Fractional sailing program.

Boat Share by J/World is the no-fuss performance sailing program from J/World, the Performance Sailing School and Club. This is the best fractional program available. We work with individuals who want to own and sail exceptional boats to create a member group for each boat and offset the owner’s monthly expenses. We enable those who simply want to sail to pay a flat-rate monthly fee and sail a great boat!

For sailors, this means that you can get a fractional membership in a great boat for a low monthly fee… for a little more than the slip fees plus insurance costs associated with single ownership, you can get out sailing!  Only direct members of a particular boat get to sail the boat, so you know all the partners in it, and you know that your boat is being taken care of.

BoatShare by J/World Sailing School and Club makes it possible for you to sail the boat you WANT to sail: modern performance sailboats with asymmetrical spinnakers flying off bowsprits, easily managed by just a couple of crew. Boats from 26 to 45 feet.

Member Benefits

So what does it mean to become a BoatShare by J/World member? Simply put, it means that you are a fractional sailing partner (non-equity) in a boat of your choosing. The boat is shared by limited number of other partners, and only these partners sail the boat.

All of the costs (slip fees, insurance, maintenance, etc.) are covered. You pay only a flat monthly fee, which is far below what it would cost to purchase and maintain a boat (usually, it is slightly more than slip feels alone would cost you).

Enjoy your boat just as you would if you owned it, including day sails and overnights at marinas, yacht clubs or anchorages – even your yacht club cruise-out. You can use it for weekends or even full weeks at a time. Of course, certain booking rules regulate the booking of the boat to insure fair access, however you will get two to three weekend uses per month, and plenty of mid-week access.

But with a little planning you can bring the dream to life sooner - and have a catamaran sailboat to train up aboard in the meantime. Seawind Catamarans' Charter Ownership may be right for you.

Funding the cost of a catamaran is a hurdle facing many sailors. But it doesn’t have to be. Buying a catamaran for charter can make the numbers work for you. And if you’re reading this then you’re probably thinking of going cruising in a few years – and that means now is the time to take action.

Most charter operators depend on owner catamarans being available – the charter company itself does not own the catamaran, they’re only brokering its charter schedule. These fleets return the catamaran sailboat owner a percentage of the chartering revenue.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Your catamaran can enter charter in many locations. Popular locations for Seawind Charter catamarans include: Bahamas, Grenadines, The Whitsundays, The Pacific-Northwest USA, Mexico, Croatia, and of course, Sydney.

The Whitsundays, for example, has for many years has been Australia’s favourite destination for ‘bareboat’ charter sailing yachts and catamarans, with all of the magnificent islands, anchorages, beaches and resorts that this world heritage area has to offer. As a result, the destination is a major draw for charterers from Australia and around the world, and it rightly gets the bulk of the charter revenue in the country. This revenue is collected by charter brokers and distributed with approximately one third spent on sales and marketing, one third for the cost of turnaround and maintenance and one third returned to the owner as gross profit before interest payments and taxes.

Charter boats must undergo compliance checks to meet strict safety and construction standards which then allow their owners to legally charge passengers a fee for a cruise either with a qualified skipper (“skippered charter”), or self operated by the charterer as a “bareboat”. Seawind Catamarans are built to meet these standards (and higher) in the USA, Australia and Europe.

Bareboating has fast become a popular holiday option for boating enthusiasts around the world, with large fleets located in the Caribbean, Bahamas and Australia’s Whitsunday Islands. And this popularity has made bareboat ownership a great option for buyers seeking to reduce the cost of boat ownership.

Skippered charter boats on the other hand are typically purpose-built and certified vessels offering half day cruises or longer excursions to large groups of people, typically for sightseeing, whalewatching or on-water parties. Skippered charters typically offer higher returns, however are a less desirable choice as a private vessel.  Some Seawind catamaran models – including the Seawind 1160 RESORT are designed specifically to meet this demand.

Catamarans have become the world’s most popular choice of charter boat due to their space, layout, stability and ease of operation. As a result, they offer the strongest returns and have the broadest appeal across regions.

Why a charter boat.

Charter boat ownership helps accelerate getting you on the water now, rather than waiting until retirement. This means you start gaining experience on your own boat and brings you a step closer to going cruising to new destinations sooner.

Your boat won’t be sailing with charter guests every week of the year.  And chances are that someone in your family has less confidence aboard or wants more time training inshore.  So in the off season and in any unsold weeks, you train up by sailing your own boat, preparing you and your family for your great adventure.

When the numbers are right, and you and your family are ready, withdraw the boat from charter and go cruising – at a time of your choosing, and overall having invested less in the boat, and more in quality time.

AMAZING LOCATIONS

By default, charter boats are located in superb destinations, be it the 74 islands of the Whitsundays, the pristine waters of the Caribbean or the historic Croatian coastline. And they are typically in locations easily accessed by tourists and boat owners alike, with good flight connections from major airports. But as a boat owner, you are not restricted to the same limited cruising areas that charterers need to fit into a 1 or 2 week charter.  On your own boat, during your time aboard you can explore further afield.

But the location is important. Find a balance between the most lucrative charter locations – which are often far from home, compared to something closer to home which might offer lower charter revenue potential. If you have less cruising experience and want or need more time training on your boat, choose somewhere closer to home where you can more easily access the boat in off-weeks. It might be your flight connections which determine the destination.

QUALITY TIME ONBOARD

We all struggle to spend quality time with our friends and family, so it makes a big difference when you can take full advantage of your limited holiday time. And a big upside to charter boat ownership is that the catamaran will be professionally maintained by a charter company – it has to be clean and in full working order for guests, and you’ll benefit from that same upkeep. Having a catamaran that’s ready to enjoy is a stress reducer in itself. And with no need to spend hours doing maintenance yourself, you won’t be tempted to pour hours into the catamaran; you can spend more time with friends and family!

THE FINANCIAL POSITION

A charter boat has the potential to generate sufficient revenue to not only cover holding costs (i.e. insurance, registration, marina fees and yearly servicing) and running costs (such as wear and tear, fuel, cleaning and management) but also to provide a healthy profit. When compared to private ownership where the costs of ownership and natural decline in value of a boat are entirely at the expense of the owner, the contrast in outcomes is significant.

As your boat starts to return some of the investment, you’re beginning to “pay the boat off”.  While that’s happening, the boat is depreciating in value – but not very quickly. Depending on the layout, Seawind Catamarans hold 70-80% of their value after 5 years, and 60-65% after 10 years. Plan it right and you’ll have paid off more than that through the charter revenue.

With TimeShare Sailing , your monthly cost is typically less than a single day's charter rate at the local sailing club or monthly slip fees down at the marina. You pay one flat rate to sail as often as most boat owners. TimeShare Sailing's  members don't have to sacrifice on the quality of their boat either. All of our luxury JBoats, Beneteau or Mainship Yachts are shared by a limited number of Members and one Owner Member, who are each guaranteed flexible and frequent use of their boat. Members use our our online calendar to make instant reservations or plan outings up to a year in advance.

TimeShare Sailing is an innovative approach to boating that makes it easier, quicker and more economical for aspiring captains to take the helm of a new boat. We threw out the old bareboat charter model and rewrote the book for todays' sailor.

This is How it Works:

A sailboat is “shared” by a limited number of Members and one Owner Member. Each member is guaranteed 7 sailing experiences per month...the monthly fee equals what one single daysail would cost! Members design their own sailing calendar to sail when they want, using our online Google Calendar.
