Singapore’s Dry-Dock Revolution for Superyachts

Ship repair in Singapore dates back to when the first dry dock was built in 1859. Due to the policy pursued by the government in the late sixties, the ship repair business became more international. By the mid-seventies, Singapore was firmly established as a major international ship repair centre, particularly for larger, more sophisticated vessels. It has maintained its leading position in the world since then.

The ship repair industry has grown in tandem with the development of port facilities. The first container terminal was built in 1969 and has propelled Singapore into the global league. Singapore was the first country in Southeast Asia with a container port. It has since grown to become one of the busiest and most connected in the world, with more than 150,000 ship calls per annum.

Over the last 40 years, Singapore has evolved from a small regional ship repair and building centre into a world-class shipping centre that serves international clientele. The industry includes ship repair, conversion, shipbuilding, rig building, offshore engineering, and a full range of marine supporting services. Very soon, it will add yacht repair and refit to its list as most medium-sized shipyards race towards acquiring the business knowhow for the challenges ahead.

Globally, Singapore is renowned for its comprehensive range of reliable marine services, providing a one-stop marine centre for shipowners, managers and agents around the world. There are at least 1,000 home grown small- and medium-sized enterprises that have been established, supporting conglomerates such as Keppel and Sembcorp Marine. The marine industry is successful because productivity is high and processes are efficient. These processes include shipyard safety, customs procedures for importation of parts as well as immigration policies for employment of engineers and skilled technicians from overseas.

With the growth in superyacht visits to the area and demand for class survey, maintenance and haul-out facilities, many medium-sized shipyards have started to pay notice to the needs of these white boats and are making changes to pursue yacht business. The complete switch from commercial to white boats is not expected to take place any time soon as commercial ship repair is still a viable and lucrative business. However, shipyards are adapting their existing facilities and infrastructure, such as graving and floating docks, to provide better protection for superyachts against air pollution. They are also training the workforce and providing service-oriented skill upgrades to mid-management personnel to help them adapt to yacht clients while retaining their core-competency.

Moving forward, shipyards here are also looking for strategy alliances with yacht builders and providing quick-docking facilities for emergency repairs. Shipyards in Singapore have the advantage of solid engineering foundations and a conducive business climate to provide world-class service to superyacht owners. The tenacity of these shipyards will ensure that the new business venture will prevail, just as they made Singapore one of the world’s premier ship repair and ship conversion centres and a global leader in the building of jack-up rigs and the conversion of FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) units. However, shipyards here would not be going after every available job in the market. The sweet spot is in the 60 – 120m range, where quick turnaround time is key factor to success.

Underwater Propeller Damage Repairs

We know that underwater propellers are easily damaged if they strike a buoy, floating logs, debris or ice. The damage is usually located at the tip of the blade, which can become bent or chipped, causing vibrations. The solution is to trim the blades equally to remove the damage and achieve a proper balance while at the same time reducing excessive cavitation. This technique requires extremely accurate measurements of the diameter of the individual blades to reduce to an absolute minimum the amount of material removed and to ensure the perfect propeller balance.

When trimming damaged blades, the nature and location of the damage determines the type of repair we carry out. Modifications are made depending on the desired RPM impact which restores the RPM/MCR ratio.

Underwater Welding, Cutting and Sealing

We utilize the very best tools and techniques available, such as Hydroweld and Broco electrodes for external or internal repairs.  These are proven to produce the most constant temperature delivery for the best weld quality possible. We place a high emphasis on the competency of our underwater welders who are AWS D 3.6 Wet-Welding certified, and approved by DNV.   

Underwater sealing of leakage holes are treated  by using double bolted “sandwich” repairs to secure the 10mm leakage hole with epoxy application, thus ensuring the best results.

Travis Kelce had an “awesome” time in Singapore last week, when he supported girlfriend Taylor Swift as she wrapped the latest leg of her blockbuster Eras Tour.

When discussing his world travels Wednesday on the newest installment of the “New Heights” podcast that he co-hosts with his older brother, retired Eagles center Jason Kelce , the Chiefs tight end revealed that he visited the world’s largest glass greenhouse during his time in Asia.

“It was cool as f–k,” said Kelce, who referred to himself as a “big plant guy.”

“… The way the whole thing was laid out, it was a very controlled space and everything was blooming at the same time, it was so unique and so nice. It was hot as f–k in Singapore cause it is smack dab in the middle of summer over there, so it was 100 degrees outside and then you got to go into this chilly, 70-degree room where they’re just pumping AC into these plants.”

Though Kelce didn’t call it out by name, the Flower Dome glasshouse at the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore holds the Guinness World Record as the largest glass greenhouse with a volume equivalent to 75 Olympic-size swimming pools, per the venue’s official website .

In addition to checking out the sights, Kelce “got to see two amazing shows of the Eras Tour,” which will go on hiatus until May 9, when Swift, 34, will kick off the European leg in Paris.

Kelce, who has been dating Swift since last summer, was seen dancing with friends at the pop star’s Eras Tour shows at the National Stadium, where he later met her backstage for a post-show embrace .

Before traveling to Singapore, Kelce supported Swift in Syndey, Australia , where she performed in late February.

When asked which destination he preferred, the three-time Super Bowl champion had difficulty deciding.

“I love them both, man,” Kelce told Jason, 36. “… I want to see more of Australia, I feel like I got to see a little bit more of  Singapore so I’m going to say Singapore was a little more interesting, for sure.”

Upon wrapping her shows in Singapore, Swift returned stateside for Oscars weekend.

The 14-time Grammy winner and Kelce attended an exclusive Academy Awards afterparty in Los Angeles on Sunday, Page Six confirmed .

Swift is gearing up for what’s expected to be a busy spring.

Before touring through Europe, she will release her 11th studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” on April 19.

It remains to be seen if Kelce will join her overseas.

The All-Pro tight end is currently enjoying his offseason after Kansas City captured its third Super Bowl title in five seasons last month.

Swift was in attendance for the big game at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, where she and Kelce celebrated the Chiefs’ Super Bowl 2024 victory with a kiss.

Travis Kelce is opening up about his recent trip to Singapore.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 34, traveled abroad last week to support his girlfriend Taylor Swift 34, during her Eras Tour stop. Speaking on Wednesday’s episode of the New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce podcast , Travis shared details about his trip.

"I got to see two amazing shows of the Eras tour," Travis shared with his brother, Jason , 36. "The last of the leg that Taylor has until she's back at it here in a couple of months. But yeah outside of that, got to get some lovely Singapore food and just catch the views.”

Travis also detailed his trip to the "world's largest greenhouse," adding that he's "a big plant guy."

“I got to check out the world’s largest greenhouse. How about that?" Travis said. "It was cool as f---. They had the world’s, like, biggest waterfall in a greenhouse too. It was awesome, man. The way the whole thing was laid out.”

He continued, “It was a very controlled space and everything was, like, blooming at the same time."

“It was so f---ing unique and so nice. It was hot as f--- in Singapore,” Travis added. “'Cause it was the slap dab middle of summer over there, so it’s 100 degrees outside and then you got to go into this chilly, like, 70-degree room where they're just pumping AC into these plants.”

"It was so lovely to go in there just hang on that thing and see all the amazing plants," he said.

Jason then asked Travis if Singapore looked as amazing and futuristic as it did in tourist pictures, to which Travis replied that it looked “exactly” like how it was advertised.

“The architecture's crazy," he revealed. “They have that one hotel, the Marina Bay Sands or something like that, where it looks like a boat is on top of three pillars … and then everything around that kind of hotel is really, really nice.”

Travis’ comments come after he attended Gucci's official Oscars afterparty with Swift on Sunday. A source told PEOPLE that the couple appeared to be in great spirits with Travis being “protective of her.”

Man missing after boating incident at Kinchant Dam near Mackay

A rescue helicopter has joined police in the search for a man missing in a boating mishap during a family day out at a popular north Queensland dam.

Police were called to Kinchant Dam, about 35km south-west of Mackay, at 11.14am after the man and his daughter went overboard from their broken-down boat.

The girl, 9, was rescued from the water at 11.45am and taken to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition.

A Queensland police spokesperson said the man had not been seen since.

A woman and three other children were also on board and were safely taken to shore at 12.29pm.

A police boat, State Emergency Service volunteers with three boats, Queensland Fire and Rescue Service swift water rescue and CQ Rescue are part of the search efforts.

The dam has been closed to all recreational users, with campers at the popular site asked not to enter the water.

Challenging conditions

Senior Sergeant Trevor Robson said a man on a jet-ski had located the nine-year-old but could not find her father.

The rest of the family was rescued from the boat, which soon sank despite being anchored.

"The biggest challenge to finding him at the start was the weather and the cloud cover, which makes it very hard to see into the water," Senior Sergeant Robson said.

Family members remained at the dam this afternoon.

"We will go until the light fails us today and then we will be back first thing in the morning," Senior Sergeant Robson said.

Boat owners join search

The dam is a popular weekend destination for camping, boating, water sports and fishing.

Kinchant Waters Caravan Park lessee Gordon Howard said boat owners joined the search as soon as the accident was reported.

"We have heard that they couldn't get the boat running and the little girl fell overboard and her father jumped in to save her," Mr Howard said. 

"It's a very windy day on the water and the wind blew the boat away from the child.

"It's just a tragic situation for everyone here this weekend."

Singapore Airlines announces updates to its premium economy service offerings

SINGAPORE — Singapore Airlines announced updates to its premium economy service offerings. The changes include 175 new food menu items and all-new dishware, as well as a new amenity kit available on request on flights of at least seven hours, designed by U.S.-based sustainable lifestyle company Out of the Woods.

The carrier introduced its premium economy cabin in 2015, which features roomier seats and elevated service compared to the traditional economy product. Thursday’s announcement represents the first major overhaul of the service offerings in the class.

According to Betty Wong, Singapore Airlines’ divisional vice president of inflight service and design, the carrier’s changes to its premium economy offerings were based on customer feedback, which showed that food and beverage options were the top deciding factor for most customers who chose to book premium economy tickets.

“Taste, availability of choice and meal portions are the most important factors contributing to the premium economy class customers’ inflight dining experience,” Wong said in a presentation to media in Singapore on Thursday “Customers can enjoy an elevated inflight dining experience which includes an improved and expanded selection of beverage options, a new amenity kit, a return of our hard copy menu so customers can view all of the meal offerings that are available onboard.” 

The menu updates include new wine and champagne offerings, a larger tea selection and dishes like grilled beef tenderloin, seafood hor fun, lamb biryani and many new desserts.

The new service items will start rolling out on flights beginning March 31. The airline did not announce any new seat designs or layouts as part of the changes.

According to Singapore Airlines, premium economy is available on 42% of its flights, including those to Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Newark, San Francisco and Seattle.

Singapore Airlines’ fare calendar shows that premium economy tickets typically cost between $2,000 and $4,000 round trip on the U.S. routes in the coming months.

Russian, Ukrainian women allegedly working illegally in Boat Quay area

SINGAPORE - Foreigners have been spotted working illegally in the Boat Quay area, even as the authorities continued their crackdown on illicit activities at entertainment outlets around Singapore.

Women from Eastern European bloc countries including Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and Belarus have been operating outside a pub in Circular Road, where they get men to buy them a “special” margarita drink at $100 a glass.

It buys the customer time with the women, until the drink is finished. Payment is made to employees of the bar.

The Straits Times understands the arrangement sometimes leads to offers of sexual services for a fee.

Entertainment outlets in the area were targeted in a series of police raids in 2022 and 2023, with the authorities seeking to crack down on illicit activities including solicitation.

In 2022, before Covid-19 restrictions were fully lifted at public entertainment and nightlife joints, police checked more than 350 people and arrested dozens at outlets around town, including in the Circular Road area.

Boat Quay and other entertainment districts like Little India, Geylang and Chinatown were again targeted in raids conducted between Nov 15 and Dec 18, 2023.

Around 6,700 people were checked, with the authorities arresting 523, including women who had allegedly offered sexual services.

More recently, the police and other agencies embarked on a four-day anti-crime blitz from Feb 28 to March 2, again targeting entertainment outlets. In total, 62 individuals were arrested, including 12 women for allegedly providing sexual services.

Tourist visas

ST visited the pub in Circular Road over four days. Even on a rainy weekday, when there were few pub crawlers out, the women sat outside the bar for hours, often without drinks.

Some girls were seen darting inside the closed-door bar whenever a police car drove by. A neighbouring tenant, who did not want to be identified, said the bar moved in only about five months ago.

On March 6, ST observed two patrons entering the bar at close to midnight. Three Caucasian women, who were sitting outside, followed the men inside immediately.

About 15 women were spotted every night gathered outside the bar in tight-fitting clothes and heavy make-up.

Some of the women were around 22 years old, and on tourist visas. They said they work six days a week, from 8pm until closing time at 3am.

The women stay in two separate apartments, a residential unit in Orchard Towers and another in Geylang. They said their boss “managed” them but they declined to identify her.

ST understands the women had previously worked at another bar at Orchard Towers, where nightlife outlets once flourished but ceased public entertainment operations after May 31, 2023.

The pub in Circular Road was the only entertainment outlet in the area where Eastern European women were gathered.

A man, who identified himself as one of the directors of the pub, said their clientele largely comprised Caucasian men and people who work in the Boat Quay area.

He initially denied the women were working at the pub, saying they were mostly guests.

But he added: “From what I understand, as long as they have an employment pass, they can work (at the pub).”

He then said he will have to check with his operations team if women on tourist visas were working at the pub.

Foreigners intending to work in Singapore must have valid work visas.

Under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act, those caught employing foreigners without valid work passes can be fined up to $30,000, jailed for up to a year, or both.

KTVs and nightclubs in Singapore are required to have a category 1 public entertainment licence, which permits singing and dancing.

But the licensee must ensure that patrons and others in the premises do not breach laws, including those related to prostitution. They are also not allowed to employ any foreigner without a valid work permit or employment pass.

As at March 2024, there are around 1,300 public entertainment outlets with the licence.

A spokesman for the Singapore Nightlife Business Association said illicit practices should not be normalised within the industry but acknowledged the organisation’s limits.

“Those who want to flout the rules will always find ways to do so. What we can do is to continue to spread awareness and educate business owners on good practices,” the spokesman said.
