MY Gran Finale

Boat: MY Gran Finale | Captain: Glenn Gorman

I would like to highly Recommend Coral Sea Marina for anyone considering a visit there. We had a fantastic stay in November/October of 2022, Coral Sea Marina continues to set the standard in customer service for Marinas in Australia and the World. Amber, Amy, and the team couldn’t have been more helpful during our stay and helped us greatly when we had an urgent medical situation onboard. I can’t recommend the place enough. The grounds and Docks are always in immaculate condition too.

Boat: SV Tawera | Captain: Mike Mahoney

In 50 years of world sailing, Coral Sea Marina is in a league if its own! The surroundings are beautiful, but the staff, management and services provided are first rate. They add huge value to any cruising experience. I can’t recommend CSMR more highly.

MY Sea Raes

Boat: MY Sea Raes | Captain: Ben Okey

Coral Sea Marina in my opinion presents as the premier marina for Super Yachts wishing to visit the Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays. The Staff and Facilities are exceptional. No matter the berth they allocate you the marina is laid out to prevent any weather influence on vessels and provides a safe haven for peace of mind. Coral Sea marina has on offer courtesy cars, fuel, Sewage pump out, ice & entertainment, which is a huge benefit for vessels travelling north. When I next visit the Whitsundays, I won’t look to another marina as you can’t beat Coral Sea marina.

Boat: MY Playpen | Captain: Peter Cook

Motor Yacht PLAYPEN has just had the most enjoyable visit to the wonderful Coral Sea Marina Resort. As a world travelling Superyacht it is a pleasure to stopover in such amazing spots around the world and CSMR is definitely a hidden gem. The facilities are terrific with a Crew lounge and all the facilities you could imagine. Location is right on the doorstep to the Great Barrier Reef and the superb cruising grounds of the Whitsundays and the staff are just wonderful. This is a definite stop on any yachts itinerary.

Boat: MY Lady E | Captain: James Kennedy

Coral Sea Marina was an excellent staging point for our most recent Whitsunday’s charter.  The marina is new, well presented and well appointed – including courtesy cars, hotels, ample parking and a secure berth.    The marina managers, maintenance team and security detail were friendly, accommodating and went out of their way to ensure our provisioning, extensive deliveries, crew changeovers, and guest welcome was efficient and professional.  Communication was open and concise throughout and plan changes or timing adjustments were never a problem.  We appreciated the hospitality and look forward to returning again this year.”

MY Hey Jude

Boat: MY Hey Jude | Captain: Paul Maguire

Coral Sea Marina is by far the best marina in Australia for service and amenities. Our every wish was accommodated for swiftly and professionally without question. We love to come back every year.

Boat: MY Spirit | Captain: Martin Debanks

I have nothing but praise for the team at the Coral Sea Marina Resort, Amy and the crew provide a first class service in a first class marina. You will not find a better facility  in the South Pacific. Their knowledge and can do attitude is paramount to giving Super yacht worthy service to our owner and guests. Being located in the heart of the Whitsundays with easy access to such fantastic cruising grounds and the bustling town of Airlie Beach make this a must see destination and should be on everyone’s bucket list Check out MY Spirit’s video showcasing the best of the Whitsundays

MY Silentworld

Boat: MY Silentworld | Captain: Michael Gooding

From the moment you contact Coral Sea Marina the service and follow up makes you feel like you are their only client. We have used the services of Coral Sea Marina on several occasions and look forward to returning every time.

MY La Bella Vita

Boat: MY La Bella Vita | Captain: Glenn McHenry

Coral Sea Marina is a true leader within the Australian Marine Industry. Providing a 5 star facility together with 5 star staff, we always feel at home at Coral Sea Marina.

Boat: SY Cavallo | Captain: Jack Reid

The 43 M sailing yacht ‘Cavallo’ is enjoying yet another cruise in the glorious Whitsunday region. Once again availing ourselves of the excellent facilities at Coral Sea in the bustling township of Airlie Beach to do our preparations it took no time convincing us to cruise the area again, this time utilsing some of the new designated anchorages that have recently become available to larger yachts. As we typically draw more water than other smaller yachts we find we are no hinderance to them and they usually give us a wave before going in closer to anchor. The anchorages are well spaced around the compass points to provide options for all wind and swell directions. We now have better access the many walking trails and the famous pristine beaches that the Whitsundays have to offer. I’m a long time convert to the cruising possibilities here and this now makes the experience far more feasible and more complete! I’m sure other yachts like ours will follow.

Phoenix One

Boat: Phoenix | Captain: Phil Donohue

Just a quick note to thank all of the staff of Coral Sea Marina for making our stay a memorable experience. Phoenix One spends 8 months of the year away from her home port and visiting the Whitsunday region each year as well as Coral Sea Marina is the highlight of the cruising year. I have been cruising the Whitsunday region for many years and I have seen the transformation of Coral Sea Marina into in my opinion the best marina on the East coast of Australia. It really is the place to Stay Play & Explore. The crew of Phoenix One looks forward to seeing you next year.

Boat: Hillsy | Captain: Jason Mills

I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to the Coral Sea staff and management. I feel it must be said with 14 years’ experience (super yachts) of visiting the Whitsunday region and in particular Coral Sea Marina, your marina and staff have undergone what I could be best described as a miraculous transformation, the can-do attitude was a delight to deal with, and the surroundings within the marina are world class. Managements changes and plans are truly a credit to all involved, we loved our experience this year, and I look forward to berthing again real soon in Australia’s newest number ONE marina, Coral Sea. Well done everyone.

Boat: SY Indio | Captain: Ben Mackay

The new depths on the superyacht arm has provided SY Indio, which has a 5m draught, to use Coral Sea Marina as a suitable base during its stay in the Whitsundays. Coral Sea has been very accommodating allowing us to change berths on request and assisting us with anything required. I would recommend it to any yacht cruising the Whitsundays.

Boat: MV Vegas | Captain: Greg Numa

Our Motor Yacht Vegas cruises the Whitsundays and surrounding Great Barrier Reef extensively for 4 months of the year. Every year. We are in the region around Late July early August and do not leave until early December. We have cruised extensively throughout Australia and the South Pacific Islands all the way to Tahiti. We use many marina facilities throughout our travels. Whether it be long term or casual berthing, provisioning or overnight stays. There is no equal to the reception you get on arrival at Coral Sea Marina. It is not just the pleasant, well-educated staff. Or the effort they go to from the time they take your call on the phone to make a booking to your arrival at the dock. It is the culture instilled in everyone involved at Coral Sea Marina. Paul has built by far the best superyacht destination in Australia. It does not stop there. Paul and his highly motivated team ensure your stay is as stress free as humanly possible. They go out of their way to ensure this happens. The marina provides courtesy cars. They provide Helicopter transfers between the mainland and the airport on nearby Hamilton Island. Paul himself is Yacht owner and this reflects in the service he provides to other yacht owners from the many years he has cruised the waters in and around Australia. You cannot provide a better service unless you have experienced what other marinas offer. Coral Sea Marina has not been built on chance. Paul has designed the Marina around how he lives. You treat others how you would like to be treated yourself. He has staked his reputation on it. And all this reflects on the outstanding staff he employs and the destination Coral Sea Marina is. The facilities and infrastructure of Coral Sea Marina and the ongoing development of services the marina provides for all yacht uses in the Whitsundays, is second to none. Without question, every year since Paul and his talented team of individuals took over Coral Sea Marina, we get excited heading back there.

Boat: SV Sarissa | Captain: Greg Monks

Sailing the Whitsunday islands has to be one of the highlights of sailing in Australia. Coral Sea Marina is conveniently located close to the best sailing areas of the Whitsundays but also in a very protected spot which offers great protection from strong south easterly trades. With her keel up, Sarissa draws 4m which is no problem for the marina. We’ve all been impressed by the extremely helpful and friendly support we have received whilst visiting and look forward to coming back again in the future.

SV Hemisphere

Boat: SV Hemisphere | Captain: Gavin Bladen

Everyone at Coral Sea has gone out of their way to make sure our stay went smoothly. Coral Sea is a great facility for yachts to prepare for trips out into the Whitsundays, or take a little down time for the crew. The marina facilities have undergone a major revamp since their humble beginnings and now tick all the boxes a superyacht looks for when deciding where to berth. The Whitsundays is Australia’s premier charter ground and offers everything a superyacht needs to keep her guests entertained. From tropical islands, pristine beaches, beautiful and protected anchorages, and shore-based activities like scenic flights, spas, access to fantastic diving out in the Coral Sea, and Great Barrier Reef and the world-renowned SS Yongala wreck which lies just off Townsville, along with great sport fishing opportunities.

A few words from some of our happy customers

yachts queensland australia

The Ackinclose Family

This was the holiday of a lifetime. When we returned, we immediately got off the boat and walked straight into the office to book again for the following year.

We had an absolute blast. And really the boat was the centre piece of that. It was everything we could have asked for; spacious, luxurious, comfortable, plenty of water storage and fridge/freezer space, room to spread out, great cooking facilities, plenty of lounging areas and a hot shower and comfy bed at the end of every day.

Perhaps most importantly it allowed us to ‘choose our own adventure’! This holiday had it all…. turquoise waters, swimming, snorkeling, fishing, isolated beaches, white sand, incredible walks, beach combing, whales, dolphins, turtles, tropical fish, and some high sea adventures! It’s one thing to visit the Whitsundays, it’s another altogether to holiday ON the Whitsundays. Being on the water 24/7 is an experience unlike any other… it was pure joy!

We loved being on our own (the perfect covid safe holiday really!), enjoying each others company and everyday being an adventure. Not to mention relaxing and unwinding with the most amazing scenery and sunsets. This is a holiday you and your children will remember forever!

Billy & Friends

Thank you again to the Whitsunday Escape Crew for another amazing experience in the magnificent Whitsundays. We had a wonderful 10 days onboard the Seawind 1260 Volare, which kicked off with a great brief by Amee who was very thorough and very knowledgeable about operating Volare safely.

Throughout the charter the support from the ops team is first rate. Whether you want to know where the best place to overnight for the conditions, or if you need some advice about the boat, they will always go the extra mile to ensure you have the best holiday possible. Shoutout to Jordans mobile outboard repairs that paid us a quick visit in Stonehaven to help sort us out.

The absolute highlight for this trip was the time we had all of Whitehaven Beach entirely to ourselves for a few hours on a sunny afternoon. A magical moment that is unlikely to be repeated.

We’re already booked in for our next charter with Whitsunday Escape over Christmas and can’t wait to get back up there.

The Patel Family

We were first time ‘bare boaters’ and a little nervous about going out to sea in a million-dollar catamaran but Whitsunday Escape couldn’t have been more helpful providing boating information and ensuring we had the prerequisite knowledge.

Big thanks to Lachy for his ‘pep talk’ to my crew before we set off.

Best family holiday ever and we loved every minute.

An inexhaustible source of adventure, Australia is the quintessential superyacht destination. Overflowing with iconic destinations that bask in the country’s infectious laid-back style, it is no wonder Australia is an enduring favourite for sport, adventure and natural wonders.

With an eclectic mix of unique experiences, there are memories to be made in Australia that simply cannot be found anywhere else. Escape to a country that in one moment will leave you in awe at its untouched natural beauty, and the next throw you into the very heart of the some of the world’s most exhilarating events. Beaches are more than a spectacular blend of sand and sea in this colourful country; they’re a lifestyle and inhabit every piece of Australia’s coastal character, from the boho fashion of the locals to the delicious seafood cuisine served in waterfront restaurants.

Australia boasts an all-year-round cruising calendar, outstanding tourism experiences and world-renowned refit and maintenance facilities that welcome the global superyacht fleet. For those willing to indulge their inner hedonist, Australia is the ultimate superyacht playground.

Unique experiences, all-year-round

Summer and Winter cruising seasons afford Australia an irresistible outdoor spirit that lasts 365 days a year – rather fortunate given the abundance of experiences that await…

A country surrounded by water, Australia is a superyacht haven. Ranging from unspoilt, secluded stretches of glowing white sands to towel-strewn golden paradises and rough surfing havens, beach-lovers will never be disappointed here. Diversity reigns supreme in this huge island nation, where a cruising itinerary can encompass an amazing range of sights not found anywhere else in the world.

From the stunning coral reefs of Queensland, to the spectacular waterways of New South Wales and the crocodile-filled waterholes of the Northern Territory, Australia is a truly unique yachting experience. The kaleidoscopic colours of the Great Barrier Reef are the pinnacle of any diver’s fantasy. From Port Douglas down to Bundaberg stretches 300,000 square kilometres of coral cays, brimming with marine treasures and exquisite sea life. There is simply no better destination for water-based activities.

Not all of the adventure is concentrated at sea. Step inland and discover Australia’s diverse flora and fauna, along with a rich Aboriginal culture. Stop off to play with kangaroos, koalas and wombats or sample fine wines at one of Australia’s exemplary vineyards. The rugged beauty of The Kimberley and Tropical North Queensland presents the opportunity to learn something new. Immerse yourself in 50,000-year-old Aboriginal rock art, brush up on your bush tucker skills or get an awe-inspiring perspective of it all from the sky.

For those who can’t stay too long away from the hustle and bustle of a city, world-class marina facilities in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne can take you right back into the action. Sydney is perfect for a long weekend of luxury comforts, fine dining, and high-end shopping. New Year’s Eve onboard a superyacht with the backdrop of Sydney’s Opera House and Harbour Bridge is certainly one for every owner’s bucket list. Head down to Melbourne, the events capital, for some of the world’s best events. From the Harbour, you are a short tender cruise from the major sporting events held throughout the year, including the Grand Prix, Melbourne Cup and Australian Open. Alternatively, a short walk down the newly renovated dockside will bring you to the Marvel Stadium, where leading artists flock to perform.

Indulge in infinite luxury

No matter where in the country your itinerary may take you, Australia’s highlife is never far away.

Premium superyacht marinas scattered across the islands lead into luxurious five-star resorts, leaving your yacht in good care while you delve into an authentic barefoot island retreat. Ideal for groups carrying a wide demographic, the Whitsunday Islands offer everything from chic beach glamour to high-octane water sports.

Should you wish to venture into Australia’s richly diverse regions, the Luxury Lodges of Australia will welcome you in sumptuous style. A collection of the finest lodges and camps around Australia, Luxury Lodges offers over 250 individual experiences and activities that connect guests to Australia’s most breath-taking locations, unlocking their curiosity and adventure-seeking spirit. The standards of comfort and service in Australia’s high-end heritage sites are parallel to that of a stay onboard one of the finest superyachts. Whether overlooking the Ningaloo Reef on Australia’s West Coast, staying in the world-renowned Barossa Valley wine region in Southern Australia or dining underneath the iconic Ayers Rock in the World Heritage listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, the Lodges deliver a truly special experience.

If you prefer not to stray too far from the natural playground of the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns and the Whitsunday Islands offer a selection of high-end luxury resorts. Surrounded by a bewitching blend of sublime landscapes, intriguing marine life and infinitely perfect anchorages, the tropical coast marinas offer something for every superyacht party. Superyacht owners have enthused that being able to explore the coastal towns without the need for a security detail has added a special touch to their Australian exploits.

World-class superyacht facilities

Nowhere else in the world can a superyacht sit so detached and isolated yet still be within a short cruise from premier, state-of-the-art shipyard facilities. Australia has a thriving refit and maintenance industry that has benefitted recently from significant investment to cater to larger vessels, meaning no project is too complex.

All along the East Coast there is an array of shipyards that constantly makes sure the South Pacific superyacht fleet is well serviced and pristine. The capabilities available are not to be understated. In Cairns, the world’s largest Mobile Boat Hoist at BSE Maritime Solutions gives the area significant pulling, and lifting, power. The City can accommodate superyachts of up to 140m in length, while highly experienced agents take great care in providing everything needed for a seamless transition from or to life at sea. Cairns itself provides the perfect setting for a superyacht homeport, situated between the Wet Tropics Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, two World Heritage listed natural wonders.

Queensland’s vibrant South East region boasts a similarly impressive offering. The well-established facilities in Brisbane and the Gold Coast have given the green light to significant investments as they prepare for an influx of visiting superyachts. Rivergate Marina & Shipyard has its own prominent international reputation, having completed over 250 superyacht projects since opening in 2006. Rivergate’s positioning on the Brisbane River provides easy access to both the bustling city and the immaculate cruising grounds of Australia and the South Pacific.

The Australia Marine Complex in Henderson, Western Australia is home to Echo Yachts and Silver Yachts, both multi-award-winning superyacht builders with glowing international reputations. The delivery of 84m trimaran White Rabbit by Echo Yachts in 2018 earned worldwide acclaim for reimagining the possibilities of comfort and efficiency onboard a superyacht. Superyacht projects undertaken in Australia not only benefit from the thousands of specialised trades that surround each facility and the historic expertise in aluminium, but also from the significant exchange rate advantage of the Australian Dollar.

New possibilities

With the intimacy of a small island and the might of a first world country, Australia is the South Pacific superyacht hub with a perfect balance to ensure there is never a dull moment. Some of the world’s largest superyachts frequent the sanctuary of Tropical North Queensland’s marinas as a homeport and gateway to the excitement of the South Pacific islands. Hollywood star Will Smith became the first to officially charter a foreign flagged superyacht in Australia following the passage of new legislation in 2019. Since then, interest in superyacht charters has blossomed from the tropical northern areas down to the isolated splendour of Tasmania.

yachts queensland australia

Tracing its history back almost 60,000 years, Australia boasts an impressive and storied past with cave drawings, pottery and artwork narrating its history through the centuries. The indiginous people enjoyed a peaceful coexistence until British settlers claimed possession in the 18th century and established a penal colony, dispossessing these Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islander people of their land and marginalising their communities.

Descendants of the original settlers have now been formally recognised as custodians of this vast continent, and we continue to learn through their deep connection with the land and marvel at the astonishing and diverse landscape that acts as a siren call to anyone lucky enough to explore Australia's vast and glittering shores.

Today, Australia is renowed for its cosmopolitan culture and vibrant nightlife, world-class diving and elite watersports activities; an alluring combination for luxury yacht charters.

A superyacht charter in Australia is without a doubt the best way to fully immerse yourself in this marine utopia, offering unparalleled access to a dizzying array of splendid stops far from the tourist trail. Unsure whether to pick a crewed motor yacht charter or a sailing yacht charter ? We've laid out the main aspects to consider before making a final decision.

Motor Yacht Charters in Australia

Motor yacht in Australia

A crewed motor yacht charter  in Australia is the pinnacle of luxury. With five-star amenities and hotel-serviced living coupled with a completely unadulterated level of privacy and the freedom to cruise as you please, it's no wonder a motor yacht has enduring appeal. Uncover reefs, bays, and beaches of incomparable grandeur that are only accessible by boat, and experience your own private paradise.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Australia

Yachts docked at Australian harbor at sunrise

With so many options available, there’s something to suit every type of budget. For convenience we have listed the average prices for motor yacht and sailing yacht charters in the Australia below;

  • For motor yacht rentals in Australia, prices can range from $81,578 to $784,092 per week, plus expenses
  • For luxury sailing yacht rentals in Australia, prices can start from $43,000 weekly, plus expenses

Tax for Yacht Charters in Australia

The passage of the Special Recreational Vessels Bill 2019 has been a huge boon to Australia's superyacht sector. The legislation allows foreign-flagged superyachts to charter in Australian waters without fully importing their vessel to the country, increasing the selection of yachts available for crewed charters.

Superyachts can obtain a coastal trading temporary allowance to charter, and guests will need to pay a  10% Goods and Services Tax (GST) according to the charter's value. This will be applied on top of your charter fee, as well as any delivery or redelivery fees that are incurred.

For additional information on VAT and tax concerning your yacht charter in Australia, please consult your chosen  yacht charter broker .

Surfer riding a wave in Australia

Given Australia's unfathomably vast terrain, temperatures can range from temperate to tropical depending on the region, so the optimal times to visit popular yacht charter destinations can vary slightly.

  • June to October is considered the best time to experience the natural wonder of the Great Barrier Reef , where yacht charterers can benefit from considerably less rainfall, which means improved diving conditions due to better water visibility.
  • June to August  are the best months for seeing  The Kimberley's  celebrated waterfalls at full flow.
  • When summer comes to the Whitsundays  it buzzes to life with temperatures hovering at 30 degrees, with balmy sea temperatures of between 27-28 degrees. October is the sunniest month with up to 10 hours of sunshine a day. For the glitterati, September is the optimal month to visit the Whitsundays as it's comfortably warm with less humidity, plus fewer tourists are around.
  • December to February are the months when Sydney is at its liveliest and it's also widely regarded as the best time to visit: watch the city's harbor turn into a riot of color as fireworks are let off for New Year's Eve.
  • November to March  are the key months to experience the pleasant climes of Melbourne .

The Whitsundays is an invariably popular place to begin a superyacht charter in Australia, comprising a long indented ribbon of 74 islands cradled from the outer ocean by the Great Barrier Reef.  As an underwater menagerie featuring some of the most bewilderingly beautiful lifeforms, and at land level replete with barely-frequented, jungle-clad beaches that boggle the senses with their heavenliness, its allure is evident. Plus, there is a multitude of overnight anchorages at guests' disposal here.

The preferred jumping-off points for the Whitsundays are the  Coral Sea Marina and  Hamilton Island Marina . If discovering the Great Barrier Reef in all its glory first,  Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina is a preferred choice.

Though Australia certainly isn't lacking in impressive spots to start a yacht charter elsewhere: take majestic Sydney  with the world's largest natural harbor. But keep in mind there may be a smaller fleet to select from in other destinations.

Yachts moored in a marina in Australia

Discerning charterers know that a fabulous mise en scène is what brings a yacht into glorious technicolor, and Australia's throng of epic marinas certainly transforms this fantasy into a reality. Here are the Australian marinas where your experience on land will be just as rip-roaring as it is on the shimmering azul sea.

  • Hamilton Island Marina: well-protected marina situated in the picture-perfect surrounds of the Great Barrier Reef, with berths available for superyachts up to 60m.
  • Coral Sea Marina: this premier facility is mere minutes from Airlie Beach, a popular starting point for Whitsundays charters. Accommodates up to 520 berths for yachts up to 80m in length.
  • Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina : the only place where two UNESCO World Heritage sites meet (Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest). Queensland's northernmost marina has a 135 berth capacity for yachts up to 50m.
  • Cairns Marlin Marina: situated in the heart of the city and only 10 minutes from Cairns International Airport. Has 261 berths with some reserved for superyachts up to 140m.
  • Sydney Superyacht Marina : luxurious on-shores facilities with chic bars and restaurants in the world's most famous harbor, can accommodate yachts up to 75m.
  • Melbourne Superyacht Marina : prime position to attend one of the city's many sporting fixtures, located in a sheltered environment and provides superyacht berthing up to 75m.

A heady tapestry of anchorages in a patchwork of implausible blues are woven into Australia's deliciously diverse landscape, ideal for an action-packed or a luxuriously sedate yacht charter alike. From ribbons of chalk-white sand etched with the pawprints of passing kangaroos, to aquamarine waters home to an aquatic world that flourishes in all its vivid coral variety, itinerary options are practically limitless. Below, we've hand-picked some of the best anchorages in Australia:

  • Osprey Reef (Great Barrier Reef): utterly remote and sitting atop of a submerged atoll, come for exceptional diving visibility, spotting everything from sea turtles to beaked whales.
  • Ribbon Reefs (Great Barrier Reef): select from a garland of glistening reefs to anchor overnight at and snorkel to your heart's content.
  • Lizard Island (Great Barrier Reef): tranquil oasis renowned for its buttery soft sands and translucent waters, and has a top-end resort with fine dining possibilities.
  • Nara Inlet (Whitsundays): well-protected anchorage that spans two miles,  providing guests with unbridled solitude. Ideal for paddleboarding and kayaking.
  • Sawmill Beach (Whitsundays):  a heavenly overnight spot situated in Cid Harbour, best for rainforested hiking trails and astounding panoramas.
  • Whitehaven Beach(Whitsundays): one of Australia's most famous spots to drop anchor at thanks to its swirling sands.
  • Cape Hillsborough (Queensland): cruise further afield and be richly rewarded with kangaroos and wallabies who scour the beach at sunrise.
  • Cable Beach (The Kimberley): vast swathes of pristine sand frame fiery orange sunsets that are widely regarded as the best in Australia.
  • Montgomery Reef (The Kimberley):  be captivated by the spectacular sight of the reef seemingly rising out of the water, with hundreds of cascading waterfalls forming around it.
  • Rose Bay (Sydney):  peaceful stop to anchor at, conveniently located near to the world-renowned golden arc that is Bondi Beach.
  • Sugarloaf Bay (Sydney): known for its blissfully secluded surroundings and gives excellent protection from the wind.

Tropical birds in Queensland Australia

  • Keep in mind that stingers (potentially lethal jellyfish like the Box Jellyfish and Irukandji) are found in coastal areas of Queensland. The higher risk season is from October to May in the Whitsundays, so wear protective 'stinger suits' when diving, swimming, or snorkeling.
  • Be aware of freshwater and saltwater crocodiles in the Kimberley, which can appear from waterholes. Whilst they are majestic creatures, they are best appreciated from afar!
  • Whilst Queensland itself is certainly a fantastic all-year-round destination, it's worth remembering that the Great Barrier Reef only experiences two seasons, wet and dry. The dry season here is from May to October.
  • Remember to wear sunscreen: Australia's proximity to the equator means that the country experiences very high UV radiation levels.
  • Guests should ensure their passport is valid for up to six months prior to their charter.
  • Most guests will need a valid Tourist Visa or an Electronic Travel Authority to enter the country. There is no fee if your stay in Australia is less than three months. Please consult your yacht broker for personalized information pertaining to your trip.

Great Barrier Reef

fish found in ribbon reef australia

The Great Barrier Reef is a diving haven that lures the global superyacht fleet with almost 3,000 reefs and 900 mostly uninhabited islands. Caressed by warm, gentle waters that sparkle with total clarity, yacht charter guests will be enthralled by the seemingly unending seascape. To elude the crowds, head to the  Ribbon Reefs and its garland of phenomenal diving sites such as The Clam Gardens , the Temple of Doom , and Andy's Postcard.

For a spot of underwater magic after dusk, head to Snake's Pit . Marvel the impressive night spectacle of coral that blooms in a smattering of multicolored daubs and friendly sea snakes that float amid shoals of fish. No trip to the Great Barrier Reef would be complete without relishing the barefoot luxury of Lizard Island.  24 silk-like beaches are hugged by topaz shallows — and it's the refuge of a few sun-dappled reptiles too.

The mainland also many treasures: don't miss out on the exclusive restaurants and spas of uber-chic coastal town  Port Douglas, which is bordered by the lush vegetation of the  Daintree Rainforest. The melodies of kookaburras and kingfishers circling above will absolutely enchant you.

Whitsunday Islands

Hill Inlet at Whitehaven Beach, Whitsunday Island, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia

A smorgasbord of mellow, paradisiacal beaches, lavish resorts, and tropical rainforests coupled with gin-clear waters, the Whitsundays makes for a thrilling yacht charter. The eponymous isle  Whitsunday Island i s where you will find the world-famous Whitehaven Beach: 7km of white satin-like silica (98 percent) sand that furls with the turquoise shallows like a just-whipped ice cream sundae. To get the best views of its almost luminescent appearance, hike up to the lookout on Hill Inlet on the northern end of the beach.

For the gourmands and the golfers, cruise towards the resort at Hamilton Island . Choose from an array of splendid fine-dining options with beachfront views of the heavenly Coral Sea , or go to the 18-hole golf course, replete with steep valleys and jaw-dropping ridges.

Justifiably popular spots to whip out the snorkels and flipper fins to include Hook Island , and its stunning Nara Inlet or Butterfly Bay -where a swarm of Ulysses butterflies make their trajectory over the ocean each morning and night.,  Neck Bay or Cid Island, where blossoming coral mingles with manta rays and many more.

Sydney shimmers with a cosmopolitan brilliance. With a staggering number of swanky bars and hip eateries, as well as being a trailblazer in arts and culture, the city entertains yacht-goers with great panache. We haven't even mentioned the internationally-renowned golden stretches of sand ( Bondi Beach , Palm Beach , Coogee Beach, and Manly Beach to name but a few) that are sprinkled along its coast.

Outstanding New Year's Eve shows is where Sydney truly excels. And what vantage point could be better than from the sundeck of your superyacht, clinking Champagne flutes as the sky transforms into a whirlwind of pyrotechnics at Sydney Harbour Bridge ?   Recover the next day and cruise towards the serene  Sugarloaf Bay , sequestered from the hustle and bustle of city life, and fall into a quiet slumber on the sun pads.

The Kimberley

Buccaneer Achipelego, The Kimberley, Western Australia

The Kimberley retains a certain mystique that seduces the adventurous yacht charterer year after year, as a region where the Outback invitingly melds with the coast. As an undulating rhythm of lush jade greens, softly glowing auburns and ochres tumble into a whirl of pink sands and mint-colored seas, The Kimberley beguiles the senses. Feel everyday life slowly slip away like the dreamy sunsets that will come to define your charter here following a day spent bronzing on Cable Beach , the coral-hued, mangrove-fringed Roebuck Bay , or cleansing in the lagoons of Mitchell Falls .

Onshore, trace 50,000-year-old Aboriginal art carved into soaring rock faces on a private tour of the semi-arid savannah, before jumping on a tender to delve into  Ningaloo Reef:  an inexhaustible source of diving adventure and the world's largest fringing reef. Admire gliding sea turtles and float alongside pods of dolphins or tame whale sharks - the latter visit the area from March till July.

Sunrise over Melbourne

Silhouetted by the angular forms of illuminated skyscrapers, Melbourne is a glittering metropolis that's an ideal yacht charter destination for those seeking a trip with a hearty buzz. World-renowned annual events such as the Australian Grand Prix , The Melbourne Cup and the Australian Open  all take place here, and it bursts at the seams with trendy eateries, Michelin-starred restaurants, and cool bars. If you are looking for cute critters, make a pitstop at the Phillip Island Nature Parks where you can hug a koala and watch penguins make their nightly waddle across the beach.

If the bright lights start to wane, Melbourne is conveniently located to offshoot locations like the hip coastal city of  Mornington Peninsula , all sprawling vineyards and colorful beach-hut lined sands, as well as  Tasmania, whose wild beauty far surmounts its diminutive size.

Beautiful sunset over the bend of the river Clutha with Southern Alps peaks on the horizon, New Zealand

With the Great Barrier Reef alone spanning almost the length of Italy , and tremendously diverse scenery both at sea and land, it isn't hugely common for an Australian yacht charter to continue elsewhere. There is enough to keep people busy for possibly weeks or months!

However, to find out about possible yacht charter combinations further afield (such as New Zealand ), please contact your yacht charter broker.

For Australia yacht charters, we strongly advise booking well in advance of your trip to ensure you get the perfect vessel for your chosen dates. We recommend doing so three to six months ahead to give your  yacht charter broker  the time to organize a personalized itinerary and provide you with an amazing Australia chartering experience.

If you leave left too late, the selection of yachts at your disposal will be reduced. Plus, finding dates when everyone in your charter party is available, can become more difficult the longer it's postponed.

Australia Yacht Charter Q&A

Browsing the range of Australia charter yachts available is a breeze on our website. Select by your chosen dates, number of guests, yacht type, features, and preferred onboard toys and we'll show you what's on offer.

If you do make a subsequent enquiry, a yacht charter broker will then contact you to provide you with a custom charter proposal.

Alternatively, contact your  yacht charter broker directly, and they will be able to research on your behalf your Australia yacht charter options.

For most Australian yacht charters, you secure the booking through a completed charter agreement, with 50% of the charter fee paid upfront as a deposit. This amount is usually payable once the contract has been signed.

The Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsundays (74 glittering isles located within this gigantic oceanic playground) are the preferred choices to begin or end an Australian yacht charter. Guests adore the world-renowned diving and snorkeling opportunities here (which are practically boundless), their uber-luxe resorts and stunning array of bays and anchorages.

Foreign-flagged superyachts should obtain a coastal trading temporary allowance to charter in Australia.

Be clear about where exactly you want to charter a yacht in Australia prior to booking, as the best times to visit can differ dramatically according to the region. For example, popular superyacht hotspots like the Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsunday's and the Kimberley's are all best explored between June-September. Meanwhile, for Sydney and Melbourne the best times to visit are between December and February.

Australia is a sought-after yacht charter destination, which for guests means there is a yacht to suit practically every budget.

However, take into consideration the additional costs that aren't included in the base rate for your yacht charter in Australia. This includes the 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST) that needs to be paid according to the charter's value, and the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance). The APA is usually set at 30% of the charter fee and paid in advance to cover expenses such as fuel, berthing, food and drinks, as well as any special requests.

At Borrow A Boat we're on a mission to make boating more accessible and to make it easier for you to get on the water. We believe boating should be available to everyone, and we can help the boating industry, boat owners, marinas, and everyone who wants to go boating by providing a 21st-century boating marketplace. Borrow A Boat is the best place to find and rent boats of all sorts, from a canal and riverboat across Europe to a sailing boat, motor boat, catamaran across North America, the Mediterranean, Caribbean and further afield, along with some of the world's most impressive superyachts and luxury yacht charters.

Boats or Yachts Available For Rent Or Charter In Queensland

Where it comes to chartering or renting boats in Queensland below is a list of the typical types of boats that you can hire on Borrow A Boat with a description of the boat type. If you can't find the individual boat charter you are looking for when you do a search in Queensland it's worthwhile searching nearby locations as your chosen boat type might be available nearby.

When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below boat types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the boat or sailing yacht was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Sailing Yacht (Sailboat): From €120/£100/$135 a day up to whatever you can afford, monohull sailing yachts are fun to sail at all points of the wind and an affordable way to get around if your island hopping or finding your own secluded coves or sandy beaches along with longer cruises. Sizes range from those for a couple or small family to a full sized luxury charter yacht.

Catamaran: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the staterooms as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamaran: These types of boats are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.

Luxury Yacht: Luxury yacht charters are available for either a sailing yacht (sailboat), catamaran or motorboat and will have a crew and host/hostess on hand to cater for whatever your needs are along with a skipper who will have a detailed knowledge of your cruising area. On a crewed yacht charter of this kind you get to create your own personal itinerary and will have far greater range than on other boats which allows for lots of variety in how you travel and what you do.

Superyacht: A superyacht or sometimes called mega yacht are boats which are least 24 metres (79 feet) in length up to 180 metres (590 feet) and can either be sailing yachts (sailboats) or motorboats. These types of boats are most frequently found in the Med of Caribbean and due to their size they will have a large chartering area and can typically pick you up from whatever location you require rather than you being required to get to a set marina to start your charter. They are fully crewed with professional staff who will cater for your every need along with a skipper who will have extensive knowledge of your chosen cruising areas.

Motorboat: This covers a wide variety of boats from a motor yacht with cabins to a private boat trip for a fishing trip but all of the these are comfortable seagoing boats with a kick of speed should you want to cover a bigger distance on the day.

RIB: Very much day boats for fishing and day cruising, RIBs are a lot of fun for a day afloat. They can be very quick and are great should you be in a town on holiday and fancy seeing the coast or finding secluded sandy beaches to get away from it all.

Skippered Yacht Charter or Bareboat

When it comes to boat hire or yacht charter in Queensland you typically have two choices - bareboat yacht hire or skippered yacht charter.

When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all boat searches to be with or without skipper depending on what you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your boat hire.

Skippered Charter: A skippered yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications before hand. For a monohull sailing yacht you will pay €120/£100/$135 plus a day extra for the skipper, as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases skippers will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a skipper as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.

Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can skipper these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In Queensland

If you are on a gulet or skippered yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of Queensland. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Queensland, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.

The ultimate place for a Queensland yacht charter in the Whitsundays

Comparable to the Greek Islands and Croatia, Queensland’s Whitsunday Islands are a world-class sailing destination.

Located in a sub-tropical climate of 74 pristine islands, the Whitsundays are protected by the outer Great Barrier Reef, which stops large ocean swells. Sailing conditions are generally calm, with steady southeast trade winds most of the year.

The Islands themselves are mostly uninhabited, with many holding National Park status. There are beaches and secret coves to explore, with over 40 anchorages options giving plenty of options for a protected place to spend the night.

Your yacht charter can be as adventurous or relaxing as you would like. Many people enjoy exploring the beaches, snorkelling and checking out some of the island’s walking trails. Adventure lovers can also experience scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and fishing.

The Whitsunday Islands are home to Whitehaven Beach, one of the most famous beaches in the world. When you charter a yacht, you can see this world-class wonder in the morning or evening away from day tours.

Yacht charter guests can access some island resorts while using their boat as accommodation. Hamilton Island, Daydream Island, Palm Bay Resort and Hayman Island have various options to hire a mooring or pull up a berth and access the resort’s facilities, restaurants, attractions and pools.

FAQs about chartering a yacht in Queensland

What is the best time of year to charter a yacht in queensland.

The Whitsunday Islands are a sub-tropical climate with a wet and dry season. The wet season runs from  December to March and the dry season runs from June to August.

The best sailing conditions are considered to be in August and September.

It’s possible to sail the Whitsundays at any time of year, with each season having its own advantages. For example, the wet season has waterfalls and fewer crowds, whereas the dry season coincides with whale’s migrating to the area.

Do I need a license for a Queensland yacht charter?

Queensland’s Whitsundays is one of the only places in the world where you do not need a boat license to hire a yacht without a professional skipper.

Before your charter, you will be given an extensive training session to ensure you can operate the boat safely. If your briefer feels you need additional training or a guide, they will advise you during the session. We also recommend that when making your booking, you express any concerns about your experience to our reservation staff.

How much does a Queensland yacht charter cost?

The cost of chartering a yacht depends on the season, the boat, and the duration.

Costs are determined at a nightly rate, not per head. The longer you charter, the more reduced the nightly rate becomes.

Some of our boats can sleep up to 10 people. In low season, if you split the hire, the average rate per person is approximately $85 a night.  This is comparable if not cheaper than a night in a hotel or staying at a resort, plus the boat includes your transport and entertainment costs.

Can we hire a skipper?

We offer a sail guide service to anyone who would like some additional training or support. Sail guides can be hired for one night or even the duration of your charter.

RBA governor Michele Bullock

What we learned: Tuesday 19 March

And that’s where we’ll leave you this evening. Here’s a wrap of what we learned today:

Australian borrowers have been granted some additional breathing space today with the RBA holding interest rates steady for the third month in a row.

The Albanese government has threatened to shelve two draft bills on changes to religious discrimination laws , citing concerns about divisive debate amid heightened Islamophobia and anti-semitism, unless the opposition agrees to its “balanced” approach.

Mega donations of more than $1.5m would be banned under a crossbench plan to get big money out of politics.

The government has quietly removed from the notice paper for this week a controversial offshore gas bill introduced by resources minister, Madeleine King .

The communications minister, Michelle Rowland , has emphasised the ABC’s editorial independence , in response to complaints from the Ukrainian ambassador about last night’s Four Corners program spotlighting the perspective of Russian troops on the frontline.

New laws are set to be introduced to Victorian parliament to force career criminals to repay any wealth that they cannot prove was lawfully acquired.

The foreign affairs minister, Penny Wong , says she expects “a frank exchange of views” when she welcomes China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi , to Canberra tomorrow.

Energy minister Chris Bowen says today’s default market offer on electricity - with the energy regulator saying consumers can expect price cuts of up to 7.1% - is “encouraging” but that there is “a long way to go”.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) have urged the Victorian government to follow coronial recommendations and introduce a pill-testing trial at fixed and mobile sites.

Cricket Australia postpones T20 series against Afghanistan over human rights record

Mike Hytner

A second Australian men’s cricket series against Afghanistan in as many years has been postponed due to the country’s poor record on human rights for women and girls.

Australia had already cancelled a one-day international series last year due to “a marked deterioration” in the treatment of women and girls.

An improvement in the situation was anticipated since then and it was hoped a three-match T20 series would be given the green light to take place in August this year. But Cricket Australia on Tuesday said the conditions were getting worse rather than better and decided to again call off the series.

CA made its decision after consulting with the Australian government.

A statement read:

The government’s advice is that conditions for women and girls in Afghanistan are getting worse. For this reason, we have maintained our previous position and will postpone the bilateral series against Afghanistan. CA continues its strong commitment to supporting participation by women and girls in cricket around the world and will continue to actively engage the International Cricket Council and work closely with the Afghanistan Cricket Board to determine what actions could be taken to support the resumption of bilateral matches in the future.

Public Interest Advocacy Centre calls on Labor to keep promise to protect LGTBQ+ students and teachers

The Public Interest Advocacy Centre has called on the Albanese government to keep its promise to protect LGBTQI+ students and teachers and not shelve two draft bills on changes to religious discrimination laws .

Earlier today, the prime minister threatened to shelve the two draft bills , citing concerns about divisive debate amid heightened Islamophobia and anti-semitism unless the opposition agrees to its “balanced” approach.

The opposition leader, Peter Dutton , has refused to offer any commitment before seeing the proposed legislation, describing the move on Tuesday as a “set-up” to allow Labor to dump its election commitment.

The director of policy and advocacy at the Public Interest Advocacy Centre , Alastair Lawrie , said:

Labor went to the May 2022 federal election with clear commitments to remove the special legal privileges that allow religious schools to discriminate against students and teachers on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity. The Albanese government must fulfil their promise to protect LGBTQ students and teachers in religious schools against discrimination, rather than give a veto to Mr Dutton. LGBTQ teachers, and especially students, have waited far too long already to enjoy their rights to teach and learn free from the fear of mistreatment on the basis of who they are.

Government quietly removes offshore gas approvals bill after warnings from environmental groups

The government has quietly removed from the notice paper for this week a controversial offshore gas bill introduced by the resources minister, Madeleine King . The bill seeks to preserve approvals for offshore gas projects, exempting them from reassessment if environmental laws are tightened.

First Nations advocates including Mardudhunera activist Raelene Cooper , environmental groups, the Greens and Senator David Pocock have all warned the bill will effectively allow the resources minister, not the environment minister, to set the rule of offshore gas approvals and water down consultation requirements.

The Greens have called on Labor to withdraw the controversial amendment in return for their support for vehicle emissions standards. A spokesperson for King said:

The government is continuing to engage on the bill across the parliament. We look forward to passing this important reform which will bring much needed clarity to offshore regulations.

At an inquiry hearing on Thursday, departmental officials said the government was open to clarifying the intent of the bill. Asked if this was the reason the bill had been withdrawn, King’s spokesperson said:

As we have said, we are open to further strengthening to give everyone confidence about the intent of the bill.

If you’re just catching up on today’s news, Mike Hohnen has our top stories here in our afternoon update:

Cyclone Megan downgraded to tropical low, but severe weather warning in place

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Megan has been downgraded to a tropical low after crossing onto the Northern Territory, although a severe weather warning is now in place for rain and wind.

Some 700 residents in the town of Borroloola faced the worst of the cyclone on Monday evening when it crossed the coast on the south-western side of the Gulf of Carpentaria as a category 1 storm.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the NT had seen rainfall totals in areas in the path of the cyclone of up to 289mm in the last 24 hours to 9am on Tuesday.

In the next 24 to 48 hours, a BoM spokesperson said some parts of the territory could see rainfalls of up to 300mm:

While Megan has been downgraded from a tropical cyclone to a tropical low, she’s still a significant weather system that is expected to bring heavy rainfall, flooding and damaging wind gusts to the Northern Territory over the coming days.

Earlier we brought you news on the Albanese government’s threat to shelve two draft bills on changes to religious discrimination laws , citing concerns about divisive debate amid heightened Islamophobia and antisemitism.

If you missed it, Sarah Basford Canales has the story here:

Jordyn Beazley

Good afternoon, everyone. I’ll now be with you until this evening.

The parliament is beginning to wind down, so I will hand the blog over to Jordyn Beazley to take you through the evening.

Thank you so much to everyone who joined along with us for the second day of the sitting. We will be back early Wednesday, where we will be hearing the same arguments we have been hearing for the past 10 years. Can’t wait! In the mean time, take care, A x

Guiding principle on religious freedom should be whether any proposal protects people of faith, Cash says

Michealia Cash has released an official statement on the religious discrimination kerfuffle:

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is being unrealistic if he expects a commitment to bipartisan support for religious discrimination laws the Coalition has not even seen yet.

The briefing released following the government’s caucus meeting indicates they will not proceed with changes to the laws without bipartisan support.

Senator Cash:

We have not seen Labor’s draft Religious Discrimination bill and we have not seen their changes to the Sex Discrimination law. It is impossible to provide bipartisan support for bills we have not seen. The Attorney-General hasn’t even released the Australian Law Reform Commission report this legislation is guided by. Stakeholders have been telling me there are some very concerning aspects to the proposed legislation. From what we are hearing, Labor’s laws will severely weaken protections for religious schools and how they operate. We are also very concerned with reports of a vilification clause, with a test set so low, it will threaten freedom of speech. This legislation must be put through a rigorous parliamentary inquiry so all Australians can understand all the issues involved. The guiding principle here should be whether any proposal the government puts forward actually protects people of faith, or whether it takes religious people and institutions backwards.”

Major donor cap would apply equally to all donors, says independent Kate Chaney

The independent MP, Kate Chaney , has rejected Labor’s claim the crossbench is being hypocritical on donation reform.

Independent member for Curtin Kate Chaney addresses media, with MP Monique Ryan behind her.

Chaney says:

Under the bill I will be introducing, a major donor cap would apply equally to all donors, no matter who they donate to or how they donate, whether directly or through an aggregator. This simple cap model would take more than half the private money out of the system and stand up to constitutional challenge. People should be able to support their candidate by donating their time or money. A spending cap would stop people from being able to participate by donating. It’s hard to structure a spending cap that is actually fair to new challengers, because of the significant incumbency and party advantages. I’m open to considering a cap proposal from the government that is fair, but I haven’t seen one yet.”

Queensland deputy premier says byelection results show opposition leader could lead the state

The Queensland deputy premier, Cameron Dick , has pilloried the Liberal National Party for refusing to reveal its position on the government’s plan to upgrade Suncorp Stadium for the Olympic Games ceremonies. Labor MPs ditched their ministerial statements in parliament on Tuesday morning with only the premier addressing the house to defend the government’s decision to reject a proposal to build a $3.4bn stadium at Victoria Park.

The government will instead go with the cheaper option of upgrading Suncorp Stadium and the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre.

Dick told reporters on Tuesday the government’s strategy was to force the opposition leader, David Crisafulli , to reveal his party’s position.

This weekend, the by-elections demonstrated that David Crisafulli could truly become the premier of Queensland. The question for David Crisafulli, it really is simple. Does he support the plan for good value games or does he support a new $3.4bn stadium at Victoria Park?
The Labor government came to parliament today to fight ... We came to ensure that David Crisafulli could no longer run away from the most important question of today.”

His comments came after LNP deputy leader, Jarrod Bleijie , said on Monday that if elected the party would go back to the drawing board and ask a planned independent infrastructure authority to make a plan.

Labor’s Farrell says some teal MPs hypocrites on political funding

The special minister of state, Don Farrell , has accused some teal independents of hypocrisy for proposing a cap of $1.5m on political donations but no cap on spending on election campaigns.

Clive Palmer speaks to the media.

Farrell said:

Labor is committed to this reform. We need to stop billionaires throwing their money around and trying to buy our elections. Some of the teals are saying to us that they agree with banning big money, just not theirs.”

Earlier today, teal MPs including Kate Chaney , Allegra Spender , Zali Steggall and Zoe Daniel rejected any suggestion of hypocrisy, noting that many of their donations were from smaller donations.

We’ll bring you a full news story shortly.

ABC to meet Ukrainian ambassador to discuss Russia-Ukraine documentary

A spokesperson from the ABC has responded to criticism from the Ukrainian ambassador to Australia (which Daniel Hurst reported on earlier), saying the ABC will be meeting with the ambassador to discuss his concerns.

The ABC on Monday broadcast a documentary from film maker Sean Langan on its Four Corners program, which presented the Russian side of the experience at the frontlines in the months following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The spokesperson says:

Ukraine’s War: The Other Side is a challenging but legitimate documentary made by reputable journalist Sean Langan and first aired last month on the UK’s ITV, that offers a rare insight into the lives of Russian soldiers during the war. It adds to our understanding of this tragic conflict and shows the full, horrific impact of the war. The reporter challenges the Russian soldiers and civilians featured in the film about their beliefs and opinions. The documentary is being seen internationally and is considered an important contribution to the reporting of the war. We believe Australian audiences also have the right to watch it and make up their own minds. Four Corners has broadcast several programs exploring aspects of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, such as:

Despair & Defiance: The Battle for Ukraine

Inside Russia: Traitors and Heroes

The People’s Fight: The Battle for Kherson

The ABC will be meeting with the Ukrainian Ambassador to discuss his concerns.

Australia, UK to discuss defence, climate, clean energy, cyber, and economic security

The Chinese foreign minister, Wang Yi , isn’t the only international visitor to Australia, this week.

The Australian government has confirmed it will welcome the UK’s foreign secretary (and former prime minister) David Cameron and the UK’s defence secretary, Grant Shapps . The pair will be in Canberra on Thursday for one-on-one talks with their direct counterparts, Penny Wong and Richard Marles . The four will then fly to Adelaide for annual all-in talks on Friday known as Aukmin. That’s not Aukus; it’s stands for the Australia-United Kingdom Ministerial Consultations.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron walks at Downing Street in London.

They will discuss ways to deepen cooperation between Australia and the UK “across defence, climate action and clean energy, cyber, and economic security”, a statement issued by the Australian government says.

Marles says it is “an increasingly complex strategic environment” and he looks forward to “working with our United Kingdom counterparts this week to progress ambitious new initiatives to deepen our defence partnership”.

Wong says Australia and the UK are “working together, including in the Indo-Pacific, for a world that is peaceful, stable, prosperous and respectful of sovereignty”.

Dutton says Labor election promise of religious freedom bill now ‘a lie’

Peter Dutton is now saying the government “went to the election with a promise that has now turned into a lie” which is an interesting line to take, given that the voice was also an election promise, but Dutton and the Coalition called on the government to scrap the referendum because there was no bipartisan support.

One of the reasons the government is shelving religious freedoms is because it does not want to have a debate on religion in the current climate of heightened Islamophobia and antisemitism when there is no bipartisan support for the bill.

The government has learnt, through what happened in the voice referendum, what can happen when there is no bipartisan support in areas of great community sensitivity.

But Dutton is saying the government should press on, regardless, because it was an election commitment.
