Best Sailboat Winches of 2024
Boats are extraordinary vessels that allow us to truly connect to nature. But they live in harsh environments and many of their components have to take enormous loads just to sail. Winches are one of the key parts of a boat that take the strain so it’s important that you choose the best sailboat winches for you.
Just by closing your eyes it’s easy to feel the wind on your face as your sailboat begins to heel over. As the sails catch the wind and the boat accelerates forward, it’s time to ease the sheets a little. This is where the winch takes over. Weak, undersized or seized winches can spell disaster. If yours are getting old, it could well be time to replace them.
We’ll help you sort out what’s good, what’s not, and what the difference is. Keep reading to find your perfect sailboat winches.

COMPARISON TABLE – THE BEST SAILBOAT WINCHES
How to choose the best sailboat winches, 1. how many winches do you need.
Well made winches can last for many decades but can need replacing for several reasons. Winch technology has moved on and you may want to replace non-self-tailing winches for self-tailing ones. Or your winches may simply be corroding or weakening through age.
It’s often easy to find out how many winches you need by simply counting the existing ones on your sailboat. Rarely used winches may be in much better condition than the same age highly used winches. This allows you to retain rarely used old winches and put the saved money into buying better quality new winches. While that liveaboard boat you hung out on may have had ten winches, chances are, a small yacht will only have two to seven.
Knowing how many winches you need allows you to stick to your budget more closely. You probably won’t need every winch to be the same either. With self-tailing winches ideal for cockpit primary winches, winches on the mast often don’t need to be self-tailing. Further savings can be made from understanding what type of winches you need.
2. DO YOU WANT SELF-TAILING WINCHES?
For short-handed sailors, self-tailing winches are all but essential. In fact, having primary self-tailing winches regardless of your crew size will make the cruising sailboat an easy place to be. Of course, if you have a really big yacht, you can use two-way radios to give winchman instructions!
On sailboats where some lines are lead back to the mast and not to the cockpit (i.e. many older sailboats), you don’t need self-tailing winches on the mast. Often you can just get away with a non-self-tailing winch and a cleat nearby.
Sheet winches should ideally be self-tailing while halyard winches can be non-self-tailing.
Winches give you leverage with which to pull in the sails but in particularly strong winds or racing conditions, extra leverage is required. Geared winches provide this extra leverage. With one to four gears, geared winches are also excellent for taking the load for hobby sailors, older sailors and even enthusiastic children!
For an ordinary cruising sailboat (even those who do a spot of club racing), you’ll be choosing between one-speed and two-speed geared and non-geared winches. Three- and four-speed winches are only used by powerful racing boats.
One-speed winches that aren’t geared are the cheapest type of winch and only suitable for small sailboats or as on-mast winches. Each turn of the winch handle equals one turn of the drum, making these unsuitable for large loads.
Geared one-speed winches offer greater mechanical leverage and the handle is ratcheted when turning in the opposite direction. This gives you more power for less movement when cranking up that sail to windward.
Two-speed winches allow the handle to travel in either direction at different speeds. This is great for fast winching with one speed and then switching winching direction for a lower speed as the sail comes in. Two-speed winches typically are geared in one direction and not in the other.
Geared two-speed winches are the same except they are geared in both directions. For the average cruising sailboat or daysailor, geared two-speed primary cockpit winches are the best option. This is especially true for single- or double-handed sailing.
4. MATERIAL
Winches come in different materials. The differences are primarily based on weight, quality, and price.
ANODIZED ALUMINUM
Super lightweight and affordable, anodized aluminum winches are a popular choice on sailboats.
CHROMED BRONZE
Bronze is extremely hardwearing, making it a good choice on sailboats. Bronze was the traditional material for winches but it looks outdated on modern yachts. Chromed bronze makes the most of the durable bronze but adds a modern look with a chrome outer layer. These are pricey but excellent winches.
STAINLESS STEEL
If you’re looking for the best and most durable winches, stainless steel is the way to go. It also looks great and it’s extremely strong. If you look after your stainless steel winches, you may never need to replace them.
Composite boat parts are increasing every year although many traditional sailors prefer metal. Composites are actually very strong, very durable and are impervious to corrosion. The main composite material used in winches (and seacocks) is Marelon. Expensive, but you’ll probably never need to replace them.
5. ELECTRIC WINCHES
Manual winches work by human strength combined with mechanical leverage. For small sailboats, the average sailor will be perfectly happy with manual winches. However, electric winches are becoming more popular and can certainly be of benefit.
Electric winches have a motor placed above-deck or below-deck. Using buttons, electric winches grind the rope for you and some will even release it for you as well.
The main downside of electric winches is their power consumption. As a sailor, you obviously don’t want to be forced to run your engine often just to charge the batteries for your winches! Always check your house battery capacity and work out how much power the winches will use on your typical sailing trips.
Electric winches also have the capacity to act as manual winches in combination with a standard winch handle. This is important because if your batteries or electrical system fails, it’s imperative that you are able to still operate your winches if you’re under sail.
CONVERSION OPTION
Some sailors want manual winches but would like to have the option to convert those winches to electric. Winches can last many decades and as sailors age, having the option of electric conversion can be reassuring.
Size is another important consideration and is based on boat size and sail area. You can often determine your winch size merely by your existing winches but the main providers also provide charts. Lewmar winch size chart is an excellent resource as is the Harken winch size guide .

Classic Winches Q&A
Harken winches are reliable, rugged and extremely efficient. They come in a wide variety of sizes and in manual, or with hydraulic and electric drives. Below are answers to questions that are often asked about our Classic winches. Note: Harken has replaced the Classic line with our Radial line, which offers the same great quality, but lighter in weight and easier to install and maintain.
How often should I service my winches? You should service your winches at least once during the preseason. However, if your boat lives in a salt water environment, where the seasons are longer, servicing your winches twice a season is best. If you race your boat hard, you may want to maintain your winches before every regatta. The more often you service your winches, the faster you become.
What service kits and spare parts are available?
What kind of tools do I need? You'll need a straight blade screwdriver to remove the drum. Some of the larger winches require a set of metric Allen wrenches (4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, and 8 mm). You'll also need a thin utility knife or small pocket knife to remove the pawls. What materials do Harken winches come in?
Harken Classic winches are offered in all-chromed bronze, polished bronze, and stainless steel. The Radial line is available in aluminum alloy, chrome with black or white accents, all chrome, or bronze. Our racing line of winches features aluminum and carbon fiber construction.
Oil or Grease
Can I use McLube Sailkote to grease my winch? McLube Sailkote is a dry lubricant used to make sails, hulls and rigging more efficient and longer lasting. But for winches, we recommend Harken Winch Grease , a special all-temperature grease that is resistant to salt and fresh water. What parts of a winch get oiled and which get greased? Clean the winch parts with a mild solvent and then lightly grease the gear teeth and roller bearings with Harken winch grease. But don't overdo it because too much grease can pick up dirt, sand, etc. and damage the gears. The pawls (they make the clicking noises as the winch rotates) should be lubricated with Harken Pawl Oil (BK4521). Don't use grease because it may make the pawls stick so the winch backwinds.
Mechanics
How do I remove the drum? First remove the screw that sits in the bottom of the winch handle socket. Then lift the socket out along with the drum. It is important to remove the drum carefully because sometimes the roller bearing cage sticks in the drum and could drop in the water.
How do I adjust the stripper arm? The stripper arm can be adjusted on winches from 16ST to 53.2ST, by removing the top screw and the winch handle socket from the winch. Lift the stripper arm, turn it to the position you want, and put the socket and screw back in place. For more information, read the appropriate service manual, or call the Harken Service Team at (262) 691-3320. Will the self-tailing mechanism work with a variety of line sizes? Yes, the upper jaw of the self-tailing device is spring loaded to accommodate different line sizes. For example, the 40.2 self-tailing winch will handle 8 mm to 12 mm line.
Winch Handles
Will a Harken winch handle fit other manufacturers' winches? Yes, if the winch isn't an old bronze Merriman style which required a unique side handle. Should I use a 203 mm (8") or 254 mm (10") winch handle? Published power ratios for most winches are based on a 254 mm (10") handle length because it is the most comfortable length for most sailors. The 203 mm (8") handles are faster because they swing through a smaller circle but, power is reduced by twenty percent. The 203 mm (8") handles are ideal for smaller boats and for light air where speed is needed and power is not.

Harken Classic winches enhance the beauty of any yacht and are made of bronze, chromed bronze, anodized aluminum, and mirror-finished stainless steel. Harken standard winches feature more bearings and wide-diameter center stems to decrease bearing loads for reduced friction. This combined with Italian styling and a durable, beautiful finish make them the first choice on yachts worldwide.

OUR WINCHES
The Classic Winch Company is presently working on recreating original classic winches as they were designed and built from nearly 100 years ago until into the 1960's for various classic yachts currently under restoration or new construction in Europe and America or undergoing an upgrade to once more make them competitive in the growing circuit of classic events.
We not only build new classic winches but can restore and improve old, existing winches as well. We can improve the gearing and access to bearings and gears ensuring that maintenance can be reduced to a minimum while the power ratio of the winch is improved.
Winter maintenance and upgrades
The 55 metre gaff schooner Germania Nova sent us two of their large winches that were supplied by Holmatro when the yacht was launched in 2011 and with which they were having minor problems. Germania Nova is a replica of Krupp's famous racing schooner Germania I which was originally launched in 1908. Both winches were repaired and upgraded with new seals and bearings making them much less susceptible to wear and tear from salt and sand.
One of the work horses of the original Meissner line of winches was the 300STB. With differently styled drums in black aluminium or nickel aluminium bronze, standard and self-tailing, this powerful grinder winch was fitted on modern maxi's such as for instance Nicorette as well as several large classics such as Eleonora, Nordwind, Mariette and Sumurun. One of these winches that had seen 20 years of faithful service on a very competitive yacht was sent to us for extensive winter maintenance.
We dismantled it and gave it a full upgrade with a completely new designed system for removing and cleaning the gears. This upgrade makes it possible to remove the gears without dismantling (unbolting) the centre stem so cutting the maintenance time per winch from several hours to a matter of minutes. With a simple tool the axles of the gears are pulled straight up and the gears slide out to the side of the centre stem like on all our other winches up to our selftailing and standard 67’s. (see image)
Following on but even improving on the way maintenance could be done with Meissner and Holmatro winches, all winches from the Classic Winch Company are extremely easy and simple to maintain. Spin off the top and simply lift off the drum. No tools needed. Then both the main drive shaft as well as the axles of the two sets of gears can easily be pulled upwards and all the gears removed sideways out of the centre stem. Once again without any tools being needed. If maintenance is easy, it is done more often and with more pleasure and care.
The 6 and 8 Metre Class
These two classes are growing and going from strength to strength with many yachts under restoration and yards even delivering meticulously researched and exquisitely built replicas of yachts that have been lost or destroyed over the years.
Meissner and Holmatro already supplied a series of what were called Metre Class Winches, sheet, runner and halyard winches for these classes with low, wide drums for better grip and trimming. The Classic Winch Company has continued this tradition and has already built several new winches of comparable design but with improved gearing and even lower styled gear housings.
We are now producing Metre Class winches for two 6 Metres as well as a full set for the 8mR Vision, several times World Champion in the Sira Class and now being restored to compete in the Neptune Class. These winches will all be made in our renowned nickle- aluminium-bronze but we are currently also making these winches with an aluminium drum that halves the total weight of the winch. These can then be anodised in the colour of choice: bronze, grey, black or …. any colour you like.
The 12 Metre Class
We have delivered a complete winch package for the rebuilt 12 Metre Jenetta that was launched in Flensburg, Germany. For this project we made replicas of classic coffee-grinders as designed by Rod Stephens in the 1930's for several 12 Metres such as Vim and Evaine. With the identical outward appearance of the original winches but built lighter through the use of aluminium for the drum and centre stem.
Slide bearings versus needle bearings
Most of our winches are fitted with our renowned slide bearings although we of course also make them with needle bearings and an axial bearing under the drum to give improved freespin.
The grey anodised, aluminium drums that we made for Jenetta have the looks of original old winches. All these winches also have identical centre-stems and gears but differences in power ratios of 50, 55 and 60 are achieved by varying the diameter of the drums. Larger drums give more line speed in the locations where this is needed while a smaller drum increases the power ration where that extra punch is needed. So, a single spares set is all that is needed for all the winches. The use of aluminium in the centre-stems and drums means that for instance the large ST60’s weigh in at only 12.8 kilo!
We are presently hard at work on a complete winch package for the successful, Fife designed, 12mR Flica II which we will deliver in April. Eight custom made deck winches and two classic styled coffeegrinders with a large drum for faster sheeting speeds. Besides racing in the 12 Metre circuit in the Baltic Flica also intends to participate in CIM events in the Med where selftailing winches are penalised in the rating there. For this reason we have redesigned our centre stems for her so that both a selftailing as well as a standard winch drum will fit the same centre stem and these have already been made for this client. Spin off the top and swap the drums and in a few minutes she is ready for either regatta racing with standard winches with a full crew or cruising with a family on board and using selftailing winches.
Electric Winches
In 2019 we delivered an electric Fairlie 50 winch for the 1913 gaff ketch Tirrenia II. This yacht was relaunched after an extensive restoration in Viareggio, Italy. We are proud to have delivered the
only winch that will be installed on this yacht which will be used as a stern capstan during mooring and as a manual sheet winch while sailing. At the request of the owner both the centre-stem as well as the drum of this winch was machined from a solid block of Nickle- aluminium-bronze.
