“We have adopted a revolutionary product that was recently presented to us, these are the latest generation Azimuthal pods certified to work even at very low temperatures,” the designer said in a statement. “For now, we prefer to keep it confidential.”

What we do know is the vessel has an estimated top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 15 knots. It will also be equipped with solar panels to generate clean, green energy on the go. The studio claims the setup’s yield is about three times greater in high-latitude areas than in continental climates.

Like any good explorer, Black Whale packs all the requisite gear to carry out oceanographic research. It’s not all work and no play, though. The yacht is fitted with multiple pools that you and your fellow seafarers can enjoy. Speaking of which, the vessel can sleep 12 across five VIPs and one owner’s cabin. The latter is located forward in the bow and has direct access to a pool. There is also accommodation for 18 crew.

Of course, you can expect a full arsenal of water toys, including a sub, Jet Skis and a tender, which can be stored on the floating dock aft. You’ll also find a helipad that can hold a chopper of nearly four tons. Coincidentally, that’s about the same weight as an orca.

This New Italian Yacht Looks Like a Killer Whale, and Can Comfortably Handle the Arctic

If superyachts intrigue you, then you must have heard of the Italian shipyard that goes by the name Rosetti Superyachts. Better yet, you must be up to date with the shipyard’s latest unveiling, no?

Should you be in the dark though, this is just the piece that will bring you back into the light. Thank the heavens for us, will you?

The shipyard recently unveiled Project Orca, and as its name suggests, the yacht draws inspiration from killer whales . These marine mammals are otherwise known as orcas, with the scientific name for the whales and dolphins in this group being Orcinus orca.

Matching the Huge Mammal

The Explorer Yacht will be 213 feet long, ten times the length of a fully-grown male killer whale. All the same, its general appearance will match the huge mammal, with the design mimicking the orca down to its dorsal fin.

As Rosetti Superyachts CEO Fulvio Dodich put it via a statement released by the shipyard, killer whales roam freely across all oceans in the world, a feat that their Explorer Yacht seeks to emulate.

According to the firm, Project Orca will take three years to complete. They, however, did not reveal how much the entire venture would cost them.

What they did share was that the end product would have four decks, be as luxurious as superyachts come, and have a 5,000-mile range with a speed of up to 11 knots. Powering the ship will be two CAT 3512 engines and the ship will also have an extended tail which will serve as its helipad. Not bad, right?

Similar to killer whales, the Orca is expected to function optimally in harsh climates, particularly the unforgiving weather at the Arctic. After all, haven’t killer whales established their dominance in most parts of the Arctic Ocean?

According to Business Insider, the ship’s main deck will be spacious enough for lounging and could also have an infinity pool. Other features that will most likely be present here will be a dining area, a helipad, and access to an elevator.

According to Project Orca’s design, the superyacht will accommodate a maximum of twelve guests accompanied by fourteen crew members. Naturally, the travelers on board will rest their heads in guest suites. You wouldn’t expect anything less, would you? As for the members of the crew, their accommodation is obviously in the ship’s bow.

The superyacht’s design, just so you know, is thanks to the expertise of Meccano Engineering, with input, obviously, from the Italian shipyard.

An Emerging Trend

As it seems, Rosetti Superyachts are simply following an emerging trend in Arctic travel. Earlier in the year, Florida-based Marlow Yachts unveiled the Voyager 100 , a 100-foot vessel designed to withstand the frigid Arctic temperatures.

Ship designers have even used this platform to comment on climate change, especially because the crisis is the very reason why ships can now navigate through the Arctic. Before when it was all ice, traveling to this part of the world was unheard of.

An Italian designer came up with a yacht in the shape of an ice cap that’s melting, sending the message that we need to look after our planet.

Insider Today

Rosetti Superyachts, an Italian shipyard, just unveiled a yacht concept inspired by killer whales.

At 213 feet, the vessel will dwarf the actual mammal ten times over – but it will be designed to have the general appearance of an orca and be engineered to thrive in harsh climates, similar to an orca.

"Instantly recognizable by their distinctive black-and-white coloring, these sea mammals roam the world's oceans from the Antarctic to the tropics, which is exactly what our Explorer Yacht is designed to do," Fulvio Dodich, Rosetti Superyachts' CEO, said in a statement.

The concept will take an estimated three years to build at an undisclosed price, but upon completion, it is expected to be a four-deck superyacht with luxurious trappings, a range of 5,000 miles, and a speed of 11 knots.

The development of yet another arctic-oriented luxury cruiser further underscores arctic exploration as a travel priority for the wealthy .

Keep reading for a look at renderings of Project Orca and other Arctic-related luxury vessels.

Upon completion, Project Orca will be 213-feet long and have a color palette and general shape representative of a killer whale. It will have four decks, an extended tail with a helipad, and an elongated radar mast to symbolize a dorsal fin.

The aesthetic design is meant to complement the yacht's engineering – it is meant to thrive in frigid temperatures, cut through ice, and be optimally functional in an Arctic climate.

The superyacht has a four-deck design with a variety of luxury features.

The main deck will have ample space for lounging, including the opportunity to feature an infinity pool. It will also have a helipad, outdoor dining area, and elevator access.

A lower deck will be able to hold tenders and multiple water toys, including several jet skis.

Project Orca is designed to accommodate 12 guests and 14 crew members.

There will be multiple guest suites and an owner's apartment, in addition to crew accommodation in the bow. The ship's interior will also include a study, a main dining room, and a gym.

The yacht is expected to take three years to build and will have a 5,000-mile range and a cruising speed of 11 knots.

Project Orca is not the only recent design to prioritize luxury Arctic travel.

Marlow Yachts , a Florida-based shipyard, unveiled the completed Marlow Voyager 100 at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show earlier this year. The 100-foot yacht was also specifically designed for extended stays in frigid temperatures – even without the dramatic orca design.

Some recent designs are even a direct comment on climate change making Arctic travel easier.

As Business Insider previously reported, another Italian ship designer recently unveiled a superyacht meant to look like a melting ice cap. Melting ice is, meanwhile, the very reason ships can pass more easily through Arctic areas like the Northwest Passage.

The concept was designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible, without sacrificing luxury. The superyacht, named "Fata Morgana," which is Italian for "a mirage," would also feature a swimming pool and helipad. It will take an estimated $110 million to build.

For those not looking to own a superyacht, the luxury cruise industry is also expanding to accommodate Arctic exploration.

Yacht ownership and maintenance is notoriously expensive ; fortunately, there are luxurious (but still pricey) alternatives for interested parties who can't dish out several million on a yacht of their own.

Hurtigruten, a Norwegian expedition cruise company, unveiled the world's first hybrid cruise ship earlier this year . The ship is currently taking leisure cruises with 450 passengers to Antarctica, running on low sulfur diesel fuel supported by battery packs.

Unsurprisingly, the ship also features an infinity pool, luxury suites, three restaurants, and a glass-encased sauna.

Prices for a future cruise featuring the same route start at $14,720 per person.

This $100 Million Superyacht Mimics the Movements of a Whale

yacht that looks like a whale

By Nick Mafi

If you're going to drop $100 million on a yacht, it better have some pretty remarkable features—say, an on-deck tropical garden or a new way of moving through the water. The new Seataci superyacht ticks both of those boxes and more. Conceived by Montreal-based designer Charles Bombardier, the concept yacht looks more like a marine mammal than a traditional yacht. And for good reason. Instead of using a conventional rotary propeller, the Seataci operates through two stabilizing side pods and a third section that trails the vessel like a tail. All three components combine to create waves that advance the craft through water the way a whale moves.

A pod is attached to either side of the Seataci concept yacht.

In comparison with other superyachts, Bombardier’s concept is an eco-friendly one. That’s because the Seataci is fueled by hydroelectricity, which reduces pollution significantly. The design also includes space for two swimming pools and two personal drone pads. Bombardier says each Seataci would be custom built, so size, passenger capacity, and speed would vary by client.

Planned $95m superyacht looks like a killer whale.

LONDON, England (CNN) -- A spectacular superyacht has been designed by an internationally renowned urban planning architect in a very unusual shape.

The planned seventy-six meter long "Oculus," which is designed for 12 guests, looks like a large sea creature, with one end looking uncannily like the jaw and eye socket of a shark or a killer whale.

A second design, the futuristic, 91-meter "Infinitas," is based on the figure-of-eight shape of an infinity loop.

The pair are the brainchild of Kevin Schopfer, a Boston, Massachusetts-based architect who felt the design of luxury yachts should move away from generic boat shapes to something more playful.

The two eye-catching designs, which include inside swimming pools and helipads, are still looking for someone to stump up the cash to pay for them. With a starting price of $95 million for Oculus and $140 million for Infinitas, they won't come cheap.

But Schopfer has teamed with naval architecture firm Sparkman & Stevens to build more of the vessels.

"There are several potential clients interested in both Oculus and Infinitas and discussions are ongoing," he told CNN. "And we are also working on several more yachts."

New Super-Yacht Looks Like Killer Whale to Blend in With The Environment

Italian shipyard Rosetti Superyachts has unveiled a 65 metre ice-classed explorer concept named Project Orca (Twitter)

A new luxury super-yacht has been designed to look like a killer whale - in an attempt to help the 215ft vessel blend into the natural environment.

The multi million pound four deck 'Project Orca' yacht was designed by Rosetti Superyachts and won't be available for at least three years.

It features the orca whale's distinctive black and white colours, a white patch on its side which lights up at night and a radar mast designed to look like a dorsal fin.

'The organic design traits mimic the orca or killer whale - the largest and most powerful member of the dolphin family', said Fulvio Dodich, CEO of Rosetti.

The company wouldn't say how much the yacht would cost as it was still at the 'prototype stage' and only release the price of their yachts to people interested in purchasing one.

Looking at the features available on the yacht, it isn't going to be cheap - the designers haven't skipped the conveniences expected of luxury vessel.

It has a gym, swimming pool, spa zone, bar and even its own helipad.

The yacht has been designed to operate in Arctic and Antarctic oceans and can cover 5,000 miles without needing to refuel at a speed of 11 knots.

It can carry 12 guests and a 14-person crew with a large garage for two tender boats and 'several jet skis', according to the manufacturers.

'Project Orca' was designed in collaboration with Meccano Engineering who created its distinctive exterior profile as well as the naval architecture and engineering.

Mr Dodich said they were inspired by the way killer whales are able to roam the world's oceans with ease.

'They are instantly recognisable by their distinctive black-and-white colouring', these sea mammals roam the world's oceans from the Arctic and Antarctic to the Tropics, which is exactly what our Explorer Yacht is designed to do.'

Within the yacht itself, images of which haven't been released yet, there will be two VIP suites and two double cabins on the lower deck.

On the bridge deck the owner's cabin will include a private study, gym, walk-in-wardrobe and his and hers bathroom.

There is a lift between all four decks, that can take VIP guests from their cabin up to the sundeck where they can get a drink at the bar or swim in the infinity pool.

It is powered by two 1398kW engines with a cruising speed of 12 knots.

Mr Dodich said that the concept engineering has already been completed for Project Orca and it would take about three and a half years to build.

'If we were to sell the boat tomorrow we could begin construction straight away.'

The Orca is a toothed whale that is part of the dolphin family. They are found in each of the world's oceans and a variety of marine environments.

Some populations of killer whales are regarded as critically endangered due to prey depletion, habitat loss and pollution.
