Description

This yacht from the Polish superyacht builder is a clever move to appeal to sailing couples looking to sail oceans—or head to their favourite cruising grounds—without the need for a crew. They are targeting a similar market to Privilege.

This 50 footer has all the high end spec and design of their larger yachts such as the generous use of teak, luxurious cabins and opulent master suite. You can extend the aft cockpit with a hydraulic platform if you want, or head up to the wet bar and sun beds on the fly-bridge. It’s a fully customisable, top end luxury catamaran.

They call this the Compact Luxury Catamaran. She features many of the characteristics of her larger 60 and 80 ft sisters in 2 50ft hulls and you can sail her without crew. Think of the cash you’ll save!

Sunreef Lounging

It’s what Sunreef is all about isn’t it? Pure luxury at anchor and the 50 doesn’t disappoint.

The amount of space you get on the new 50 has to be seen to be believed. Even though this is the Baby of the range, this is by no means a cramped boat by anyone’s definition: Sunreef have used the available footprint cleverly. The saloon is a bit of a Tardis and it spills seamlessly onto the aft cabin with its alfresco dining area and wet bar. Steps lead directly onto a sumptious fly-bridge with lots of seating and lounging areas and the helm of course.

Forward, you can also access the forward cockpit (a feature well developed in Leopard Catamarans), but as you would expect this area is somewhat more luxurious on a Sunreef 50.

In the hulls especially, you will need to get your drawing board out and work with the designers from Poland as this is where much of the customisation takes place. The #1 hull was designed for cruising around the world, so the owner went for a huge master suite, office and bathroom in one hull with guest cabins in the other. This is where the quality of the finish and the sheer available space make these boats stand out compared to yachts of a similar length. Other options include a 5 cabin version with room for crew.

With all this comfort, there has to be a trade off of course, and that is sailing performance as Sunreef catamarans are not the lightest on the market. These boats are all about luxury at anchor and getting you where you need to go in a reasonable time safely. But you are not going to be winning any races at the Voiles de Saint Barth. And to be fair, Sunreef have never claimed otherwise.

Having said that, on the 50, the boat has been set up for short-handed sailing and with the lightwind sails in your sailing locker you should move nicely along in a breeze. With electric winches and furlers and everything working properly, you should be able to handle this boat with one decent deck hand. If you were off on a long voyage though, that high boom height would worry me (problems with reefing lines anyone?), and the exposed helm position is obviously not ideal in 35 knots of wind in a big sea while you are trying to keep a close eye on everyone else on the boat. I think at the very least you’d need to make sure that you had plenty of back-up systems on board to minimise risk.

They will be launching an Amber version – a limited edition model that will come with a carbon mast and boom – that is specifically targeting worldwide cruisers. That should get the weight down and the speed up considerably.

Sunreef Summary

Most people who buy a Sunreef won’t be sailing around Cape Horn. They’ll be wanting to cruise safely at 10 knots on a reach to their favourite anchorage where they’ll probably be the most luxurious boat in the bay. And on this count, the Sunreef 50 delivers.

Polish superyacht builder Sunreef Yachts —best-known for its sleek, bespoke sailing and power cats up to 165 feet long—has a new addition to its lineup. And at 50 feet, it’s the new kitty of the range.

The $1.7 million Sunreef 50 is a smart, strategic move by the respected Gdansk yard to appeal to sailing couples looking to sail off into the sunset—or simply to their favorite anchorage—without needing a crew.

In fact, the owners of newly launched hull No. 1 have plans to loosen lines on their new Sunreef 50 this summer for a world-girding cruise with their family.

Unlike boat builders churning out production-line catamarans, Sunreef offers a semi-custom build, with the interior pretty much a blank canvas. Early orders for the 50 are mostly for a three-cabin layout with a huge, opulent master and expansive bathroom in the one hull and two en-suite guest cabins in the second.

Measuring 50 feet in length and a whopping 30 feet wide, the catamaran offers acres of space for alfresco social areas. The yacht’s bow terrace, shaded by a retractable awning, provides a sunken dining/lounging area flanked by huge sun pads.

And there’s no clambering around side decks to reach the terrace; a large sliding forward door leads you straight out from the saloon into the deep, protected well.

And steps lead up to the forward deck where there are sun pads on each bow and fun trampolines between the hulls.

It’s the same for the flybridge. Wide steps from the cockpit lead up to the full-width, configurable deck. With the helm station over to starboard, there’s generous space for large sofas, a dining table and wet bar beneath the over-sized hardtop.

Founded in 2002, Sunreef has years of experience building hard-charging multihulls. With the new 50, that means an available carbon-fiber mast and boom, over-sized electric winches, an 807-square-foot fully battened main and a 592 square-foot genoa.

When the wind dies, a pair of 80 hp Yanmars with sail drives and folding props can push the composite-hulled 50 to an 11-knot top speed, with 260 gallons of fuel for long-distance motoring.

This new 50 slots neatly into the Sunreef range beneath Sunreef 60-, 70- and 80-foot models and is all set to become the yard’s top-seller.

Lagoon 620 Vs. Sunreef 50

Catamaran comparison, in this article, we compare the giant lagoon 620 to the alluring sunreef 50, multihulls have been growing in popularity for the past years, and there is no sign of catamarans stopping their conquest anytime soon.

One could argue that comparing the Lagoon 620 to the Sunreef 50 is like comparing David vs. Goliath, in the sense that the L620 was for a long time the flagship of the Lagoon shipyard and the Sunreef 50 is the smallest in the range of flybridge catamarans produced by the Polish shipyard Sunreef Yachts.

Sunreef Yachts are in fact the birthplace of the flybridge catamarans in series-production made catamarans and much of the success the Lagoon shipyard has reaped over the last 15 years is owed to the introduction by its Polish colleagues. However, there is where the similarities end in comparing the two yards and where the similarities start when comparing the two models at hand. It’s well known that the appeal and success of the Sunreef catamarans are because they offer semi-custom options, something not common among the other shipyards, except the flagships range. One of these being the Lagoon 620. When the L620 was first introduced in the market in 2009 it was introduced a series production yacht and little “customization” was offered to the market. However, that quickly changed and the introduction of the SENSE styling came to play a huge role in maintaining its strong dominance on the market for close to 12 years in production. In among the circa hundred L620 produced until its end in 2019/20, there are several uniquely styled and specified L620 owned privately and offered in the charter. 

The launch of the 620 put into concrete form the Vendée-Aquitaine based builder’s desire to keep up with the competition (which had for some time had an eye on the development of big, 60 – 70-foot multihulls) and to accompany a clientele with a lot of purchasing power in its escape projects. Lagoon didn’t enter the 80 to 150-foot multi yacht competition but wanted to interpose an alternative offer to the advances of Sunreef or Catana in this segment. As always, the basic price was well-studied; the lover of customizing would be happy with the various versions and options. The Lagoon’s force of attraction is not limited to rational arguments; it offers a reinterpreted approach to the volumes and ergonomics of a catamaran.

In 2019, Sunreef Yachts totally renewed their range of sailing catamarans with four models of 50 , 60, 70 and 80 feet. With the “smallest” among those, the yard, based at Gdańsk in Poland is making a remarkable foray onto the playground of the traditional market leaders. Sunreef has immense expertise in every trade. It incorporates a high-level design team – the yard draws and designs all its models, as well as most of its equipment. From polyester or carbon composites to metalwork, rigging, carbon masts, décor, and upholstery, Sunreef knows how to do it all, and can meet the most demanding requests for customization. However, building a Sunreef of only 50 feet with the company’s demanding criteria (superlative space, cozy comfort, custom interior design) is not so easy. The manufacturer’s worldwide customer base is used to the highest of standards, whether on the water or ashore. A 50-foot unit would never mean “comfort at a discount” in the vocabulary of Gdańsk.

exterior design features and aspects

Lagoon 620   Exterior

An innovative in-boom reefing system and super-smart management setup on the Lagoon 620 catamaran is sure to please … the Lagoon 620 is pure innovation. It solves the challenge of sail handling – using smart technology to manage all the electrical systems.

The flybridge is dominated by the sail controls housed along the front: four large Harken 80 electric winches for sheets and halyards, while behind is ample space for the crew to work and then at the back, the two helms. These are ideally placed outboard so both sides of the 32ft-wide hull are visible. The helm modules house B&G wind instruments and both have controls for power and bow-thruster, while the 19in B&G Zeus plotter screen swivels on a Scanstrut post between them. Overhead, a canvas bimini gives weather protection, sun-worshippers enjoying double sunbeds out front on the flybridge.

The double helm station provides perfect visibility when setting sail or maneuvering, and the 620 features a functional flybridge that can also accommodate visitors, thanks to separate crew and reception areas.

Enjoy a large forward sun deck and perfectly designed transom platforms for easy access to the sea when swimming or boarding a dinghy. Moving around the boat is easy thanks to flush deck panels and wide side decks. There is almost perfect integration between the saloon and cockpit, and it includes a wet bar… you’re welcome.

Sunreef 50   Exterior

Even though the Sunreef 50 this is the Baby of the range, this is by no means a cramped boat by anyone’s definition: Sunreef has used the available footprint cleverly. The saloon is a bit of a Tardis and it spills seamlessly onto the aft cabin with its alfresco dining area and wet bar. Steps lead directly onto a sumptuous fly-bridge with lots of seating and lounging areas and the helm of course.

Forward, accessible from the aft cockpit via a wide side-deck bordered by an elegant bulwark, there is a second cockpit. Large, safe, and welcoming, it can be protected by a shade sail. Across the whole deck, there are numerous storage lockers. The sugarscoops and a hydraulic platform for the tender allow you to fully enjoy the pleasures available at anchor. A flight of steps in blond teak mounted on a splendid mechanically welded mirror-polished stainless-steel staircase gives access to the flybridge. The surface area here is, again, unexpected for the size of the vessel. The sofa is large and comfortable – and the upholstery is magnificent.

The overall lines are rather successful, considering that this mastodon can’t hide its imposing stature, spread over three floors. The Sunreef 50 displaces more than 40 tons when laden, which is a lot for a 50-foot (15m) catamaran. However, the sail plan is slender, culminating at nearly 80 feet (24 m). The slight inversion of the bows, the skillfully styled chine and the bulwarks give these voluminous hulls the look of an ocean-going limousine. All these elements seduced Christian Braun, owner of Paz. He wanted to have a catamaran with every possible comfort in a contained size. His program: a round-the-world trip with the family, with a professional crew of two.

interior design features

Lagoon 55   Interior

With all this innovation topside, it would be easy to neglect the Lagoon 620’s cavernous interior, and this for many is the key selling point of the boat. With four to six cabin layouts plus different galley configurations, there is plenty to choose from and means the 620 can be a spacious owner’s vessel, a dedicated charter boat or something in-between. The saloon’s area is considerable, but the organization of the space, the choice of sober oak decoration, a dark ‘wenge’ floor and current lines, structure a pleasant atmosphere, and leave room for customized decoration! The overall treatment is well suited to nautical use.

Direct deck access on both sides gives the aft cabins in each hull particular appeal. The cabins are the same size but the port one’s deck hatch is right beside the flybridge steps, giving quick access when required. Forward is the bathroom with a separate shower stall, a deep sink, and good headroom with ventilation.

Steps either side at the front of the saloon lead to the forward four guest cabins or three on this hull. The amidships double has limited headroom but you can sit up in bed and there’s ample storage and natural light.

Single-level living makes the teak aft deck dining area a pleasant space, the optional canvas tent surrounding it creating an all-weather location for eating at the teak table and adjoining benches. A wet bar with icemaker plus sunpad are good features here, as is the overhang that seals it all off nicely. Beyond it at the transom is another sunbed and beneath it are recessed for a liferaft on each side. The hydraulic platform lowers the RIB at the flick of a button and is an ideal place to swim from. Another useful hydraulic item is the passerelle portside.

Moving forward, the tall saloon gives good support walking the foredeck to check the anchor setup: a vertical Lewmar windlass with capstan at deck level and deep chain locker beneath, along with three storage lockers. For mooring are large cleats all-round, including amidships, and a hefty bow roller for securing the 32-ton hull.

On charter, or when private cruising, the ship’s cook is spoiled and will enjoy pampering the crew. The work surfaces are fantastic, the light and the panorama, amazing! A new fluidity, created by the access to the cockpit (or the lounge) turns the ‘office’ into a tribal crossroads, which seems to be a direct invitation to capture sea bream or bonitos. Their preparation rises to the status of a pre-gastronomic attraction for the crew.  

Another key option on the Lagoon 620 is the choice of the galley up or down, again differentiating it from some competitors. On the Lagoon 620 cooking can be in the saloon – described as a central galley – or down below in the aft port quarter at the lateral galley. 

Sunreef 50   Interior

Her saloon opens both onto the comfortable bow terrace and the yacht’s cockpit which is extended with a hydraulic aft platform. The hulls provide impressive volumes to set up a custom layout including airy, luxurious guest cabins and an opulent master suite with a walk-in dressing desk, sofa, retractable TV and an immense bathroom.

Inside, the quality seen on deck is even more intensely apparent. The natural light is generous and yet doesn’t dazzle. The galley has all the features you could wish for, but it’s all elegantly unobtrusive. A navigation station opens out on a large console and offers panoramic visibility and immediate forward access. Let’s remember that the interiors of Sunreef catamarans can be fitted out according to the client’s wishes. In theory, no two Sunreef 50s should be alike… On the other hand, the position of the imposing mast support strut is a constraint which determines a particular organization of the saloon. Luckily, it is quite close and in line with the access door to the forward cockpit. While it takes a little time to get yourself familiar with all the controls you access via a smartphone or tablet, the automation of interior management is decidedly modern. 

In the hulls especially, you will need to get your drawing board out and work with the designers from Poland as this is where much of the customization takes place. The #1 hull was designed for cruising around the world, so the owner went for a huge master suite, office and bathroom in one hull with guest cabins in the other. This is where the quality of the finish and the sheer available space make these boats stand out compared to yachts of a similar length. Other options include a 5 cabin version with room for crew.

Sunreef 50 luxury catamaran houses the main helm on the large flybridge which is also dedicated to leisure with more than enough space for movable furniture, a fully-equipped wet bar and large sun pads.

Charter fee generally only covers the hire of the yacht and crew, while all other expenses (Croatian tax, requested supplies, port, mooring and other legal charges and fees, diesel and fuel, crew gratuities, extras that depend on guest particular request for services, itinerary, food, beverages etc) are charged extra in addition to the charter fee. These additional expenses are covered by the Advance Provisioning Allowance – APA. The APA is usually equivalent to 30% of the total charter fee but maybe 35% in some cases (if the yacht burns a lot of fuel or if you intend to do more than 4 hours of cruising per day). Captain will keep an accurate record of spending and at the end of the charter, the guest will be refunded or asked to pay the difference if additional operating costs are incurred.
