The 70-metre yacht SKAT was built to be a comfortable second home, with iconic exterior design by Espen Øino and interior design by Marco Zanini. Comfort and performance were essential with noise and vibration levels extremely low at cruising speeds. The construction brief called for as much light as possible, which resulted in a glass conservatory on the bridge deck, which allows natural light to shine in from above and below while affording magnificent views of the yacht's surroundings. With a very clean layout and separation, the lower decks are entirely dedicated to technical spaces, crew and services. They received the same level of attention to design and detail as the owner and guest accommodation on the upper decks. Delivered in 2002, the size and quality of these crew spaces is still outstanding even today.

SKAT Yacht – Masterful $60M Superyacht

The Hungary native worked at Microsoft for over two decades, leaving in 2002 to start his own company.

The yacht was designed as a home away from home for Simonyi, with minimalist features penned by design house Espen Øino International.

The design house also contributed to the interior design and Marco Zanini. Lurssen built the ship in their Bremen shipyard, delivering her in 2002.

Marco Zanini and Espen Øino International penned the interior of the luxurious SKAT yacht.

Minimalism defines the interior, and although she forgoes the lavish luxury of the average superyacht, she has many beautiful features that make her a comfortable home away from home for the owner.

The impressive interior of SKAT features an elevator that serves all four decks, a leisure platform with a Jacuzzi, and a gymnasium that is located centrally on the yacht. A helipad serves a McDonnell Douglas 500N Helicopter on the upper aft deck.

The 70m yacht can accommodate 12 guests across one master suite, four doubles, and two twins.

There is accommodation for 18 crew members on board. She was built as a home and not as a charter yacht for the software engineer owner.

The interior design is focused on a clean and uncluttered look. The ship has a near-frameless bridge deck that is enclosed and offers panoramic views of the water.

The ‘capsule’ is protected as the boat spends a lot of time in Scandinavia and has to let in as much light as possible.

The beach club opens to allow guests to enjoy a swim platform and houses several water toys in the full-beam garage. The crew areas were designed with crew satisfaction in mind.

The owner uses SKAT as a home away from home, so crew satisfaction was influential in the design process.

Lurssen shipbuilders built the SKAT yacht at their Bremen shipyard in Germany. Espen Øino International executed the exterior design for the vessel.

The SKAT yacht was delivered in 2002, and she was last refitted in 2021.

Her exterior is undoubtedly striking with its grey color, imposing lines, and multiple windows. The owner is a software engineer, and the yacht was designed to reflect his vocation.

Specifications

The 70.7m yacht has a beam of 14.02m and a draft of 3.76m. The SKAT’s volume measures 1998 gross tons and is powered by 2 MTU engines.

SKAT has a cruising speed of 14.3 knots and a top speed of 18.1 knots. She has a range of 4600 nautical miles. SKAT has an annual running cost of $3 – $6 million.

A Summary of Motor Yacht SKAT

The motor yacht SKAT is a 71 metre 232 (foot) volumous steel vessel which was made at Lurssen Yachts and designed in the office of Lurssen and Espen Oeino. The naval architect that made the drawings in respect of the yacht was Lurssen and Espen Oeino. Also, the interior designing is sucessful creation of Marco Zanini / Flavia Alves De Sousa.

With an assured military style SKAT with angular grey styling and the large numbers 9906 painted on her superstructure turn head s on the water. Interestingly, on just one engine she can reach a speed of up to 13 knots. In the situation, the idle engines shaft can be disengaged, so the idle propeller freewheels.

The Build & Naval Architecture with respect to Luxury Yacht SKAT

Lurssen was the naval architecture company involved in the professional superyacht plans for SKAT. Her interior design was realised by Marco Zanini / Flavia Alves De Sousa. Lurssen and Espen Oeino is also associated with the yacht wider design collaboration for this boat. In 2002 she was formally launched to triumph in Bremen and following sea trials and detailing was thereafter handed over to the owner who commissioned her. Lurssen Yachts completed their new build motor yacht in Germany. A impressive feeling is manifested with a maximum beam (width) of 13.5 m / 44.3 feet. With a 3.72m (12.2ft) draught (maximum depth) she is fairly deep. The material steel was used in the building of the hull of the motor yacht. Her superstructure above deck is fashioned out of aluminium. In 2005 extra refit work and updating was additionally performed.

The Propulsion Type - Main Engines On M/Y SKAT:

Installed with two MTU diesel engines, SKAT can attain a high speed of 17 knots. Coupled to the SKAT engines are twin screw propellers. Her total HP is 5340 HP and her total Kilowatts are 3929. With respect to bow thruster maneuverability she was fitted with Brunvoll. As for the yacht’s stabalisers she was built with Koopnautic.

The Accommodation Capacity Offered On Superyacht SKAT:

Motor Yacht

Skat is a 70.70m (231.96ft) motor yacht, custom built in 2002 by Lurssen Yachts. The yacht's interior has been designed by Marco Zanini. She was last refitted in 2005.

Skat has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure with a beam of 13.50m (44.29ft) and a 3.75m (12.30ft) draft. This custom displacement yacht is equipped with an ultra-modern stabilization system which reduces roll motion effect and results in a smoother more enjoyable cruising experience. She also features bow thrusters making her more manoeuvrable at low speeds. Skat is built to comply to MCA and LR standards. Performance + Capabilities Skat has a cruising speed of 15 knots, max speed of 17 knots and a range of 3500 nm from her 218000-litre fuel tanks. Skat Accommodation Skat offers accommodation for up to 10 guests in five suites. She is also capable of carrying up to 20 crew members onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

70m Lürssen yacht Skat completes refit at PalumboSY Marseille

The 70-metre Lürssen superyacht Skat was spotted in Miami last week having completed a three-month refit at the PalumboSY shipyard in Marseille. 

Skat, meaning "treasure" in Danish and Norwegian , checked into the shipyard in August and spent three months undercover in a dry dock. Commissioned in 1999 and delivered in 2002, she remains a favourite among yacht spotters thanks to the military stylings of Espen Oino .

Refit work included an exterior repaint in her iconic "Skat grey" which is made up of more than 15 different pigments, as well as the replacement of a large portion of the glazing on the upper deck and a transformation of the bridge deck aft. 

Skat changed ownership in 2021 and has spent time the last two years cruising the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Scandinavia. She was redelivered in December in time for the festive season and has since crossed the Atlantic.

Long time readers may recall this design as being in the prototypes section a while back. One was being built and nearly completed when the builder had to put it aside to work on some realities of life, something that happens to all of us from time to time. But another prototype was soon underway.

Skat is a small traditional looking catboat based on a similar boat in HOW TO BUILD SMALL BOATS by Edson Schock. My copy is undated but the style of the boats suggests to me that it was written in the 1950's. The book's hulls are plywood but none are done "instant" style. I admire Schock's designs for their simple good looks and wholesomeness. Skat is like the little catboat in that book but is a taped seam instant boat with a gaff rig and kick up rudder replacing the original's Marconi rig and barndoor rudder.

I think a shallow V bottom like this one can outperform a flattie. If sailed flat this hull will have no chines in the water while the flattie will have two. When heeled the V hull will have only one chine in the water while the flattie may have two. If the flattie is heeled so one chine is "flying" the flattie may match the V. This shape was once quite popular because it worked so well with flat panels, the Lightening, Y Flyer, and Wind Mill coming to mind.

The 81 square foot gaff sail works with a 14 foot long mast which should make for better trailering than the original 21 foot mast. I kept the centerboard layout and I think this is just one of two boats I've drawn that had a centerboard. A leeboard won't work with this traditional shape. For a leeboard to work here the entire rig would have to be shifted aft at least a foot.

Construction of Skat calls for three sheets of 1/4" plywood and four sheets of 3/8" plywood. No jigs or lofting required.

The prototype Skat was built by Tidmarsh Major in Georgia. He took his time and did a great job including making wonderful details that I never show in the plans. You can see it is a 12' boat that will handle two full grown men. Here is a letter I got recently from Tidmarsh:

"Jim-- I'm just back from a week at the Gulf of Mexico sailing Skat, and she performed beautifully. I took my stepfather out for a couple of long sails and he was thoroughly impressed with how well she sailed. We launched at Fort Morgan Marina on Mobile Bay and sailed to the mouth of the bay. The Marina is a mile and a half or so from the fort, so it was probably two and half miles or so to the point. We sailed upwind through about a 1 foot chop. It was a little bit wet, but Skat made good progress in the brisk breeze. At the mouth of the Bay, we headed out into the Gulf with the ebb tide. There were some pretty good sized waves (2 feet or so) coming from several directions as we exited the Bay and the ebb tide met the current along the beach, combined with the wakes of all the fishing boats coming and going. Skat sailed happily through it all. After that, it was about a 7 mile run downwind to the house we were staying at through 2 foot swells. Along the way we saw a large pod of dolphins (10 to 15) who swam within yards of the boat. In total, we made about 10 miles in just over 2 and a half hours. All week, we kept the boat pulled up on the sand, and went out daily. We saw dolphins every day, and at one point had 3 adults and one child out for a short sail. Winds were light, but Skat moved gently along anyway. One afternoon I was out in about a 2 foot chop. Skat would make some progress to windward, but not much--the chop pushed us back nearly as much as the sail pushed us forward. At the end of the week, we sailed back around the point to the boat ramp at Fort Morgan to take out. The final cruise was a good bit longer than the first, however. We had a favorable breeze to begin with, and for the first 2 miles had an easy beam reach. Then the wind died for about an hour. There wasn't a ripple to be seen. Once the wind picked up, it was a light breeze from the west, exactly the driection we were headed. For most of the trip, we beat to windward in about a 5 knot breeze, then headed into the bay with the tide, again through 2-foot seas, and finally made the boat ramp just before dark, for a trip of about 5 and a half hours.
