Luger Voyager 30

I'm looking at a Luger Voyager 30. I presently live on the shores of Lake Michigan, in Chicago, and I'm thinking about buying one of these for a couple thousand. The owner says it doesn't have a headliner, just the bare under-deck (if that's a term) with fittings visible, etc. He's been sailing it on Lake Michigan for 18 years and is retiring; now wants to unload it. He says there is 9 hp two-stroke outboard that's a few years old, some old but sturdy sails, and one window (portlight?) that's leaking. I'm new to boats bigger than 15 feet, and new to sailing a yacht at all. But I think this might make a good starter that I can keep on a buoy in the harbor, take on weekend or week-long trips on the lake. Other possible trips include making it to the atlantic and down to the bahamas, which would necessarily be a couple of months. I'd really appreciate any thoughts on this boat, if you have anything to contribute to my odyssey. What do I need to look out for? Are there any special difficulties I might encounter? Weak spots? Thank you, Josh

The think with Luger boats is that they were all kits, this means they were sold in varying degrees of disassemble for finishing by the owner. Given that they can have significant variation in layout and quality of finish. So they range from a boat that may be a good value for a grand to would not touch with a 10 foot pole. They might make an OK starter boat, but would not be my choice to take down to the Bahamas. Again it really depends on who put it together. You say there is no headliner, well that may be that there never was one, or it was not nice, or well done so removed. The Luger Sailboat Mooring - I Love My Luger! https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/lugerboats/info I have never heard much good about them, and whenever they come up for sale they are quite inexpensive so take that with a grain of salt.

Faster

Actually looks a substantial vessel, from a decent designer even if she won't be the 'prettiest girl at the dance'.. Finish quality is always going to be the big variable with what were predominantly kit boats. VOYAGER 30 (LUGER) sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com

2 Grand is a very fair price for project grade Luger 30. But expect to spend a lot more to make it safe and sea worthy. Great design for gunkholing and if properly outfitted, also for coastal sailing.

Thank you all for your comments. I've spent a few hours online researching this boat, and the favorables are as strong as some of the negatives, which is true for almost anything out there. I know it won't be very fast, but apparently it's pretty safe in the water, hard to capsize, stands up to some stronger winds. That being said, there's the trailer, which I think is worth about as much as the boat itself, if I have to unload it whenever. I'm also hoping that I can find a place to store the boat outside of a shipyard when the weather turns bad here. That might save me some money, too. I'm pretty new to this, and I have more unanswered questions than answers. For example I foresee needing some new sails, and I don't have much insight into this process. I understand that DIY sails are affordable, given time and space. One of the things I do like is the interior head-room, which is well over 6 feet, and almost everyone in my family is tall, taller than me at 5'10," and I know that the first time my wife bumps her head in a boat is the last time she'll want to sail in it. Anyway, I'm going to look at it this Friday. Wish me luck, and if you have any tips for checking out a boat, please share. Josh

Thank you for the links and head advice!

Thank you very much for the advice. I have the feeling the owner didn't do much in his own to this 35 year old boat, which he has owned for 18. Not a DIY person. At rather think he did what needed to be done when it needed to be done. To me that suggests that either he's taking care of things in a timely manner or everything maybe on it's last legs. However he didn't sail it that extensively, a couple hours at a time, Not very far from shore, 20 times per year. 20 outings per summer not very far from shore.

Founded by the brothers Ren and Orm Luger in Burnsville, Minnesota USA. The firm began by building small kit powerboats and soon branched into the construction of sailing craft and became, according to it’s own catalog, “The world’s Largest Manufacturer of Kit Boats”. The sailboat models ranged from 8 to 35 feet. Luger turned out a lot of sailboats still seen today primarily in the mid-western USA. The “JUNE JESSEN” is a 1979; 30′ Luger Voyager. She was purchased as a kit boat in 1979; but was not complete until 1982. A lot of time, effort and passion went into assembling her. She has a hand laid fiberglass hull with molded fiberglass topsides and stainless fasteners. The “June Jessen” is a live aboard vessel in every sense and quality is evident throughout. With her huge cabin and ample space in the cockpit this boat is easy to sail, easy to maintain and easy to transport. Brokers Remarks: This is a well built, easy to sail, easy to trailer sailboat, has most of the amenities of home and has been well maintained for its age. At this price it she won’t last long!

Hi, I am looking at a 1985 Luger 21. Looks like there are several models; Southwind, leeward, windward, etc. Does anyone have a resource so I can see the differences between them. Is this a boat one (or 2) can spend the night on? Thanks in advance, Tweeet

Sunbird22358

Sunbird22358

The LEEWARD is a 16' model similar to an O'DAY Day Sailer I (well, sort of?). I think the Southwind and Windward are basically the same boat, the difference is mainly that the SOUTHWIND has a retractable keel that is totally below the hull, and the WINDWARD is a CENTERBOARD design with the CB housed inside the hull. (Windward is an older version of hte Southwind) I have an old (1981 and 1982) catalog, but there used to be a LUGER BOATS website mantained by a few owners. "The Luger Mooring".... unfortunately it seems to have disappeared! I'd suggest "googling" LUGER, see what you find...... I think I found more info on a couple of general sailing sites, like one on trailersailing. Try the Small Craft Advisor Web Site (and magazine). I can try to answer questions based on my brochures..... PS: the "SOUTHWIND 21" is really only 20' long........ Luger got 21' by measuring around the curve of the gunwale! Pretty sneaky!! I'd say 2 people could cruise in relative comfort on a boat this size, it will be a couple of steps above sleeping in a tent, and many couples have happily cruised in smaller boats. However, a lot depends on how the original owner built/finished the boat, these LUGER boats were all "kit boats" and were completed from bare hulls/decks by their owners.

Barnacle Bill

Luger Industries had its beginnings with Orm Luger and his brother in Burnsville, MN. Orm, an older gentleman now, is still alive as far as I know and lives in Minnetonka, MN. They later (but long ago)sold their business to a fellow in Missouri. I don't think they have been in business for many years. They provided kit boats of both power and sail and some of the hull molds were used for both. The sailboat designs were as follows: Zephyr 11 "multi-purpose mini-sailor" Model 1580 was a day sailor Surfrider 12 Model 1200 was a surf board with a wishbone held mainsail (like a Windsurfer) Sebreeze 16 Model 1670 had a swing keel and a small cabin Leeward 16 Model 1690 was a hard-chined daysailor with a small open cuddy (like the O'Day DS) Southwind 21 Model 2112 was the "basic" boat where you designed your own interior Southwind 21 Model 2111 was an "Interior-included" model Tradewinds 26 Model 2601 was a cabin boat where you designed and built your own interior Tradewinds 26 Model 2602 was the "interior-included" model Fairwinds 27 Model 2701 was the basic model with no interior Fairwinds 27 Model 2702 was the 'Interior-included" model Voyager 30 Model 3001 was a sloop-rigged basic model with no interior Voyager 30 Model 3002 was a sloop rigged boat with the interior included Voyager 30 Model 3003 was a ketch rigged basic boat with no interior Voyager 30 Model 3004 was a ketch rigged interior included vessel. That is all the sailboat designes that Luger provided. The rest are powerboats.

Voyager 30 ???

There are not many sailboats in my area and the list gets smaller in my price range. There is a Luger Voyager 30 that I found. It's a failed project boat with an interior upgrade needed. I googled the boat and went through 8 pages, but only old ones for sale, no real information. I did learn that they made a kit boat, not sure if this is one or not. I can get this for less than the wood would cost to build a 30' boat. I like the stern and motor well area and might work with a custom fabricated rear mount for my bike, yes, my bike. Does anyone have any information on these, what to look for and other tid bits? They said it's the largest trailerable sailboat without any permits being required with it's 8' beam....I like that too. Draft is deep at 4', but maybe that can be shaved some. I intend to motor more than sail, but would sail as well. Intended use is to do the great loop for about a year aboard. Thanks!!!
Just wondering if any of you guys were sailing as far back as '85, LOL, no one knows anything about the Voyager?

PAR

PAR Yacht Designer/Builder

I know of one for sale in Texas. It's an Ed Monk design, but I've never been especially impressed with this particular one. It had a few keel configurations and rigs available, likely some interior differences in the model run as well. They didn't make a many, nor did this model run very long. I wouldn't consider this an open water vessel for several reasons.
Thank you PAR, that's it. As you know, my requirements are for the ICW, the Great Loop on rivers, etc. Thinking a hard doger, wheel steering and a OB in the motor well as a motorsailor. 4' draft with a fixed keel. Interior needs work and I don't mind (in fact would like that). Possibly my furtherest voyage out would be the Bahamas in good weather, I won't be crossing any big waters......

Well...I am not familiar with this boat... but just now looked up it's specs on Sailprocalc.... and judging solely from what i saw there it sounds like an interesting boat that at very least should have won some club races based on it's light construction, narrow beam, and ample sail plan for a 7,000 lb 30-footer. Now I am going to see what she looks like...long and lean I bet ...you could row this thing I am thinking if the wind quit on you....just make a seat on the coachroof and find some 13-foot oars...lol...6.86 theoretical hull speed is decent for this size boat...seems she could be a racer as I said...a bit too light for a long period of offshore work likely though...and that rudder looks lightly hung...a great boat for the keys/bahamas gunkholing...cockpit looks dry if a bit cramped...cool boat overall she seems to be...
I could put a rowing seat on the sliding hatch! LOL! I guess there must be significant differences as PAR said. I found it rolls in at 8,300 pounds and now it's 7,000. I have no idea! After finding that I was thinking I had to pass as my F-150 will only pull 7,000...A few hundred pounds over I could get home and to the Mississippi, but not a thousand. I don't think I'm buying anouther truck. It is long and narrowish. Someone else confirmed that it could use amas to add stability motoring. Plans are to or more than sail. They could also come off. It has 6'4" headroom to 6' 2" forward, that's good for me at 6'.
....Hm.....8,400 lbs sounds more like what I would expect..so PAR is likely correct...but it seems to have been marketed originally as a big trailer sailor which would steer the designers down in displacement...but that 7000 lbs I saw must be an error...sailcalcpro is full of them as are other sites like it...I
Well, yes, it is a bump of sorts, this boat is still there, untouched! Lately we had a thread on terminal trawlers or strawlers, sailboats turned into power cruiser/trawlers. Seems 15 hp would do, there will be more motoring than sailing, 80/20 on the loop is what I've heard.
Here is the project: http://www.sailboatlistings.com/cgi...ault&uid=default&view_records=1&ID=27361&mh=1 I would gut it and start over. I'd like to take the head further aft adding a shower. Add a hanging locker port aft of the lav. Get rid of that u shape dinette and go with a double facing each other. Settee to port would be a little shorter due to locker. Galley to port with a return counter more than shown. Put a fridge starboard. That quarter berth would be storage. A hard doger and canvas enclosure for the cockpit, rool up for hot days. Some A/C, gen set aft where the engine compartment is, the OB is in a well. Please, need some feed back here, it would be for 2. Suggestions? What to do? If I lived in a saltier area I'd keep looking, but the inventory of 30+ foot sailboats is very limited in Missouri or the midwest....

I guess this is what I'm looking for: http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/st...-s-best-crossing-oceans-20655.html#post176026 Motion Comfort is 24.48, it appears to be better (not sure what is better a higher or lower number, but either way) than many other better known and proven boats. So what does the motion comfort really tell me?
