New Spirit P70: A Very Special Long-Range Cruiser

' src=

Before we get to the basics, let’s consider some numbers about the elegant new Spirit P70 long-range cruiser.

  • Sean McMillan, the head designer and CEO of Spirit, drew 22 exterior profiles of the boat before the owner signed off one.
  • It took three men seven months to varnish the mahogany interior.
  • It took eight craftsmen three years to build the boat.
  • The boat has a range of 1,000 nm at its cruising speed of 18 knots, something the owner stipulated so that he could cruise from his home port of Southampton in the U.K. to the Baltic without having to refuel.
  • Powered by twin 800-hp MAN diesels, the Spirit 70 tops out at 25 knots.

Enough. You get the idea. The Spirit P70 is a special boat, a very special boat, definitely built the way the owner, an experienced yachtsman, wanted it. McMillan says he “liked the design of our existing power boats, so we combined the flared bow and tumblehome stern from the P40 with the 1930s style of our sailing yachts and applied it to a larger motor yacht design. We added deep bulwarks to allow the guests to move around the deck safely, particularly when underway out at sea.”

The boat is built with a Sapele ring frame, Douglas fir longitudinals, and kaya wood veneers, all bonded together using vacuum-infused epoxy resin.

Starting at the top, the P70’s flybridge has two double Stidd helm chairs and additional seating for six guests. The wheelhouse sits amidships on the main deck, with a double and a single Stidd helm chairs. A raised sofa is to port and a chart table is to starboard.

The salon is down a few steps and forward of the wheelhouse, with a TV, bar, and panoramic views from the forward windows. Separate stairs from the wheelhouse lead to a single day head and an open-plan dining salon and galley.

Below, the owner’s cabin is forward with an en suite head and bath. A single cabin with an en suite head and shower doubles as an office. Two twin guest cabins are aft of the dining area; they share a head and shower.

Specs.: LOA: 71’1”; Beam: 16’4”; Draft: 5’5”; Disp.: 24 tons; Fuel: 2,641 gals.; Water: NA; Power: 2×800-hp MAN diesels. Read more:

Spirit Yachts Delivers 21.7 Metre P70 Motor Yacht Flagship

Suffolk-based yard  Spirit Yachts has delivered its 21.7 metre motor yacht flagship, the P70.

The yacht, which is the largest motor yacht ever built by the yard, previously hit the water at the Ipswich based yard last year. The handover of the P70 follows the delivery of the 33.9 metre flagship Spirit 111 sailing yacht earlier this year.

Commissioned by a “knowledgeable owner” and designed by Spirit Yachts’ head designer  Sean McMillan , the P70 motor yacht is a "modern classic", the yard said.

The yacht has been completely customised to suit the owner's itinerary and criteria, which includes the ability to cruise 1,000 nautical miles across the North Sea at an average of 18 knots.

Following delivery, the yacht will be based in the UK and cruise to Scandinavia in the summer.

The P70 build followed the same core processes as Spirit’s sailing yacht hulls, the yard said, including a layout stipulated by the owner.

This sees the master cabin situated forward separate from the rest of the guest accommodation. The ensuite cabin is equipped with a bath and single ensuite cabin, that can double as an office.

The rest of the accommodation and living area is located on the lower deck. Aft of the galley and the main saloon are the two twin guest cabins, which share a head and shower. There will be no crew on board.

The wheelhouse sits midships on the main deck leading into the main saloon and features a TV, bar and panoramic views from the forward windows.

The yacht also features a hydraulic crane capable of deploying a 3.7 metre RIB. Twin Man i6 800hp engines provide a cruising speed of 18 knots and top speed of 25 knots.

Spirit managing director Nigel Stuart said the P70 launch was a "significant step forward for the Spirit Yachts power range".

"Whilst the company’s core business remains sailing yachts, we are seeing increasing demand for larger motor yachts tailored to suit an owner’s cruising plans. We are responding to that demand by investing in innovation and expertise devoted to delivering beautiful modern classic motor yachts that perform on the water.”

Spirit P70 test drive: This British beauty is more than worth the wait

  • Top stories

Having followed this project from start to finish we finally get our chance to take to the water aboard the stunning Spirit P70

The Spirit P70 is a motor yacht of rare beauty and artisan skill, crafted around a set of hard numbers. One thousand nautical miles at an average cruising speed of 18 knots. For the man who commissioned her, that distance separates a home berth in Southampton from his cruising grounds of choice in the Baltic and his ideal was to be able to make that trip non-stop at a cruising speed just shy of 20 knots.

In principle, a simple equation but the business of developing the concept from the drawing board to launch is far more complicated. The P70 was on paper for over a year and Spirit Yachts’ CEO and head designer Sean McMillan drew 22 exterior profile concepts before the final one was signed off.

Construction took three years, partly due to the COVID-19 outbreak, but mainly because building a boat this way takes time and craftsmanship of the highest standard. A core team of eight pieced together the structure which combines a sapele ring frame, Douglas fir longitudinals and 3mm thick kaya wood veneers, bonded together using vacuum-infused epoxy resin.

Varnishing the mahogany interior alone took three men almost seven months to complete. See the yacht up close and all thoughts of fuel consumption and cruising range are banished, replaced with open-mouthed amazement at the Spirit P70’s sheer elegance.

You are immediately drawn in by the purity of its lines and the extraordinary level of craft and detail that oozes out of every pore. The thin layer of GRP scrim that coats the yacht’s exterior is as even and shiny as the surface of an undisturbed pond.

A tumblehome stern and gentle flair of bow with high enough bulwarks to negate the need for any unsightly stainless steel railings. Open scuppers hint at the yacht’s passage-making intentions and stand ready to swill away deck water if you take a big one over the bow.

The engine vents were designed and built from scratch, their mix of timber and stainless steel designed to ape the vents of a Mercedes 300SL. There is elegance in its slender form, too, with a length-to-beam ratio of 4.5:1 compared to the 3:1 of most modern cruisers; it’s over 2ft (0.61m) narrower than and almost half the weight of a Fleming 65 , with which it shares the same long-distance ambitions.

Read our full test drive report on the Spirit P70 in the October issue of MBY, out September 3.

Spirit P70: wooden motoryacht is high-tech inside ($5.5 million dollars)

spirit 70 yacht

Thanks to Robb Report for this:

Spirit Yachts’ flagship P70 may look like an extra from  The Great Gatsby , but this oh-so-elegant wooden motoryacht , with its gleaming mirror-varnished mahogany and classic flag-blue paint, is new from the keel up.

The 71-footer was built by Britain’s Spirit Yachts for an experienced Norwegian owner who fell in love with the timeless lines of the company’s classic wooden sailboats, but wanted the style to translate to a powered yacht.

If the Spirit name sounds familiar, this was the builder that has enthusiastically supplied yachts for Daniel “007” Craig to sail in those epic James Bond romps  Casino Royale,  and the newest,  No Time to Die.

spirit 70 yacht

But according to Sean McMillan, Spirit Yachts founder and chief designer, the owner didn’t simply want a classic-looking cruiser with a retro Roaring Twenties vibe that would sit at a marina. He wanted a boat that could go places. “The brief was to build a motoryacht capable of cruising from Britain’s south coast, across the North Sea to the Baltic and on to Norway, at an average speed of 18 knots. And he wanted the boat to go there and back—that’s over 1,000 miles—without having to refuel ,” McMillan told  Robb Report .

To meet the challenge, McMillan and a dedicated team of eight woodworking craftsmen, turned to the same wooden boatbuilding techniques they use to craft Spirit’s range of classic sailboats, including the recently launched 111-foot masterpiece  Geist .  That involved creating a framework using tough sapele hardwood . To this, longitudinal strips of Douglas fir were screwed and bonded to build the hull shape. Then, on top of this, multiple layers of Japanese kaya wood were glued diagonally to deliver carbon-fiber levels of strength and rigidity.

spirit 70 yacht

“It creates a hull that is immensely strong and light. The P70 weighs just 24 tons , which is almost half the weight of similar-sized fiberglass counterparts ,” explains McMillan.

Lighter weight also allowed smaller than usual engines to be mounted in the P70’s over-sized engine room. The twin 800-hp six-cylinder MAN turbo diesels are capable of delivering a top speed of 29 mph , with cruising at a more relaxed 20 mph.

Without doubt, it’s the lines of this timelessly elegant 1930s-style “gentleman’s” motoryacht that sets it apart. But the process of creating such a head-turning profile wasn’t easy. The owner, a highly experienced and knowledgeable boater, had firm ideas on what he wanted. It resulted in McMillan modifying the design more than a dozen times.

spirit 70 yacht

The result is nothing less than a piece of floating art, with a classic slender waist—the beam spans just 16.5 feet —and that tall, proud bow. And there are some lovely classic design features, like the stainless-steel engine vents on the cabin sides that were inspired by those from a classic ‘50s Mercedes-Benz 300SL.

“To keep the sleek, uncluttered look, we did away with the typical stainless handrails, and lowered the level of the deck to make it safe and easy to walk around the yacht,” says McMillan.

Below decks, the slightly unconventional layout requested by the owner includes a central wheelhouse, a rich, leather-lined salon area forward, and a spacious galley and dining area aft. And on the lower levels, the master suite is in the bow with twin guest cabins at the stern.

spirit 70 yacht

The quality and attention to detail are exceptional. You can understand why it took a team of three painters almost seven months to varnish the bare-wood interior . From start to finish, building the yacht at Spirit’s yard in Ipswich , on Britain’s east coast, took almost 3 years .

But while the P70 looks classic and elegant in its design, beneath the skin it’s packed with some of the latest maritime technology. That includes a bank of lithium-ion batteries that can power the yacht’s air conditioning and zero-speed stabilizers while at anchor overnight, without cranking-up the generator.

“Wooden motoryachts like this are the future,” says McMillan. “They’re light, sustainable, have a great strength-to-weight ratio , are highly fuel-efficient, and, as our P70 shows, can be turned into things of real beauty.”

Spirit Yachts unveils flagship P70 motor yacht

Friday, August 7th, 2020

Written by: Marine Industry News

spirit 70 yacht

Following last month’s handover of the  Spirit 111 sailing superyacht , Spirit Yachts has unveiled its largest modern classic motor yacht to date: the Spirit P70.

The 21.7m P70 was designed and built by Spirit Yachts for an experienced motor yacht customer who requested an owner-driven yacht capable of cruising 1,000nm at an average of 18 knots across the North Sea without having to refuel.

“The launch of the P70 represents a significant step forward for the Spirit Yachts power range. Whilst the company’s core business remains sailing yachts, we are seeing increasing demand for larger motor yachts tailored to suit an owner’s cruising plans,” says Spirit Yachts managing director Nigel Stuart. “We are responding to that demand by investing in innovation and expertise devoted to delivering beautiful modern classic motor yachts that perform on the water.”

Constructed using sapele ring frames to which Douglas fir longitudinal strips were bonded, the P70 build followed the same core processes of Spirit’s sailing yacht hulls.  Once the initial structure was complete, diagonal layers of kaya wood planking were laid down, sanded and vacuum infused with a thin layer of epoxy resin.  This lightweight method of construction means that at 24tonnes (light) the P70 is almost half the weight of its GRP counterparts.  Twin MAN i6 800hp engines generate a cruising speed of 18 knots and a maximum of 25 knots.

On the top deck of the P70 is a flybridge with two double Stidd helm seats and additional seating for six guests.  A hydraulic operated 750kg crane is included for up to a 3.7m rib.

The wheelhouse sits midships on the main deck and has double and single Stidd seats located in front of the navigational equipment and engine controls.  An additional raised sofa is to port, with a chart table and stowage to starboard.  A few steps down and forward of the wheelhouse is the main saloon, complete with a ‘rise and fall’ TV, a bar and panoramic views from the forward windows.

A separate stair case down from the wheelhouse provides access to the open plan dining saloon and galley. The saloon dining table has a U-shaped port side sofa, with additional seating to starboard, wine storage and a TV.  The well-equipped galley includes an American style fridge-freezer with built in ice-maker, below floor chest fridge, dishwasher, twin sinks, four burner induction hob, a fan oven and a microwave.  Aft of the dining area are two twin guest cabins, which share a head and shower.

Spirit Yachts unveils flagship P70 modern classic motor yacht

  • August 10, 2020

spirit 70 yacht

The Spirit P70 is designed for fuel-efficient cruising over long distances

Spirit Yachts has unveiled its largest modern classic motor yacht to date: the Spirit P70. The 21.7m P70 was designed and built by Spirit Yachts for an experienced motor yacht customer who requested an owner-driven yacht capable of cruising 1,000nm at an average of 18 knots across the North Sea without having to refuel. As with all Spirit yachts, the P70 has been completely customised to suit the owner’s itinerary and criteria.

Spirit Yachts managing director Nigel Stuart commented,

The launch of the P70 represents a significant step forward for the Spirit Yachts power range. Whilst the company’s core business remains sailing yachts, we are seeing increasing demand for larger motor yachts tailored to suit an owner’s cruising plans. We are responding to that demand by investing in innovation and expertise devoted to delivering beautiful modern classic motor yachts that perform on the water.

With regards to the design of the yacht, Spirit Yachts founder and chief designer Sean McMillan explained:

The owner will keep the P70 in the UK and cruise to Scandinavia in the summer, so the yacht had to be capable of undertaking long passages in comfort but aesthetically stay true to Spirit’s timeless style and classical elegance. He liked the design of our existing motor yachts, so we combined the flared bow and tumblehome stern from the P40 with the 1930s-style of our sailing yachts and applied it to a larger design. We added deep bulwarks to allow guests to move around the decks safely, particularly when underway out at sea.

spirit 70 yacht

Constructed using sapele ring frames to which Douglas fir longitudinal strips were bonded, the P70 build followed the same core processes of Spirit’s sailing yacht hulls. Once the initial structure was complete, diagonal layers of kaya wood planking were laid down, sanded and vacuum infused with a thin layer of epoxy resin. This lightweight method of construction means that at 24tonnes (light) the P70 is almost half the weight of its GRP counterparts. Twin MAN i6 800hp engines generate a cruising speed of 18 knots and a maximum of 25 knots.

Nigel Stuart added:

The owner is very knowledgeable when it comes to motor yacht engineering and he was keen to keep noise and maintenance to a minimum. He requested Seatorque oil-filled BOSS shafts, which are mounted to the hull structure using low noise fittings. The connection to the propulsion engine is flexible in order to reduce shaft-line noise and vibrations. The yacht has an easy-access, spacious engine room and a lithium-ion battery bank in the stern that will power the air conditioning and Sleipner curved fin stabilisers overnight without having to run the generator.

On the top deck of the P70 is a flybridge with two double Stidd helm seats and additional seating for six guests. A hydraulic operated 750kg crane is included for up to a 3.7m rib.

spirit 70 yacht

Nigel Stuart continued,

The owner also had very specific criteria when it came to an interior layout tailored for his guests. The master cabin is at a separate end of the boat to the guest accommodation and the dining saloon is open plan next to the galley as there will be no crew onboard.

The wheelhouse sits midships on the main deck and has double and single Stidd seats located in front of the navigational equipment and engine controls. An additional raised sofa is to port, with a chart table and stowage to starboard. A few steps down and forward of the wheelhouse is the main saloon, complete with a ‘rise and fall’ TV, a bar and panoramic views from the forward windows.

spirit 70 yacht

The lower deck houses the accommodation and living area. Stairs from the main saloon lead down to a forward ensuite owner’s cabin, complete with a bath, and an ensuite single cabin, which doubles up as an office.

A separate stair case down from the wheelhouse provides access to a single day head and the open plan dining saloon and galley. Aft of the dining area are two twin guest cabins, which share a head and shower.

spirit 70 yacht

Nigel Stuart added,

Spirit Yachts is renowned for elegant design, build quality and engineering expertise. With the launch of the P70, the company has proven it can successfully deliver world-class motor yachts alongside its portfolio of sailing yachts.

Spirit 72DH

Spirit Yachts has once again struck a perfect balance between a classic wooden sailboat and a contemporary yacht.

The British yard’s newest model, dubbed the Spirit 72DH , pairs an elegant mirror-varnished mahogany exterior with a decidedly modern interior. The 72-footer was designed for a European client looking to cruise, race and charter in the Mediterranean.

As you might have gathered from the DH designation, the yacht is one of Spirit’s Deckhouse designs that are characterized by long overhangs, flush decks and a raised coachroof. What sets it apart, though, is everything down below.

“The 72DH is the first Spirit deckhouse without a ‘mid-level’ seating and navigation area linking the cockpit and the main interior space,” Spirit’s CEO and head of design Sean McMillan said in a statement .

Essentially, the team opened up the interior to create a larger, brighter central entertaining space. In addition, white satin panels and LEDs were installed to meet the owner’s request for a “more modern style.” Of course, there is still a healthy amount of natural timbers to please the purists.

At the center of the yacht, the spacious saloon is fitted with a comfy sofa and an eight-seat Mahogany table that can be lowered to create space for an extra bed. The well-equipped galley is located port side, while the navigation area and chart table can be found starboard.

Elsewhere, there is one crew cabin and three guest cabins with en suites. The owner’s suite is equipped with a king-sized bed, a banquette sofa, a handcrafted dressing table with an integrated jewelry cabinet and a large en suite. To top it off, the cockpit sports a large table, 10 seats and a built-in drink fridge that ensures refreshments are at arm’s reach. Of course, there’s also plenty of storage space for water toys and tenders.

Up top, the 72DH sports a Bermudan sloop rig comprised of a carbon mast and boom from Hall Spars, nitronic rod rigging and electric Lewmar winches. In addition, the sailboat packs a Yanmar engine and Mastervolt alternator that together propel her to a maximum speed of 10 knots or 8 knots while cruising. She also has a small generator that can recharge batteries or power the electric oven and A/C.

Summer in the Mediterranean has never looked better—for one European seafarer, at least.
