The Spirit Yachts BARTech F35's stylish design dovetails classic lines with modern technology, ... [+] flying on foils while taking on the appearance of a golden era film star.

BAR Technologies and Spirit Yachts dovetailed talent and expertise to deliver a chic luxury launch in May of 2023, the Spirit BARTech F35 . With a gleaming mahogany skin and a nostalgic profile taking inspiration from the Rum Runners of the 1920s, the F35 is a distinctive, scene-stealing craft.

The first fully electric yacht to own a 100 nautical mile range, the F35 flies on foils while powering ahead at what is described as thrilling speed, courtesy of its electric motor and battery system. The yacht set a speed record for the circumnavigation around the Isle of Wight for electric vessels, slashing the existing best time from six hours to just one hour and 56 minutes.

The Spirit Yachts F35 is all about BAR Technologies' foiling design, offering a high level of speed, ... [+] control, and stability.

UK firm BAR Technologies , branched from Ben Ainslee Racing, employs advanced strategies and innovations to deliver efficient, sustainable solutions in answer to client requests. Using Artificial Intelligence, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Design Optimization, Finite Element Analysis, Performance Analysis, and expertise gained from America's Cup designs, BAR Technologies appears at the forefront of engineering for leisure craft as well as commercial vessels and work boats, delivering systems that are sustainable with an emphasis on exceptional results.

Ipswich, Suffolk, UK-based Spirit Yachts is known for precision woodworking and classic yacht design placing an emphasis on sustainable methods and materials. Universally recognized for a high quality aesthetic and functional purpose, Spirit Yachts builds custom wooden motor and sailing yachts. They are experts in creating everything from day sailors and performance racing yachts to blue water cruisers. And, as they point out on their website, occasionally the owner's brief requesting the design embraces all three.

A chic instrument panel and innovative design with removable panels make the Spirit Yachts BARTech ... [+] F35 a versatile choice, going from a two person spider to a six person entertainer.

Already an owner of a Spirit 111 sailing yacht , the owner of the first F35 wrote a brief that requested a suitable launch to complement the existing yacht. Additionally, the owner requested that the launch be highly efficient, sustainable, and display a classic aesthetic. All squarely within Spirit Yachts' wheelhouse, so to speak, the design process began.

The successful completion resulted in a vessel inspired by sleek Rum Runners of decades past, fitted with BAR Technologies patented fully foiling design that lifts the boat entirely out of the water. Pairing nostalgic good looks with top-of-industry technology, the F35 offers an exclusive, sophisticated, comfortable ride.

Aft cowling panels lift off to reveal additional seating for three and a table, giving the Spirit ... [+] Yachts BARTech F35 a wider range of possibilities.

F35 By The Numbers

A luxury, 35-foot, fully electric foiling launch, the Spirit Yachts BARTech F35 is constructed of carbon skinned cedar planked mahogany veneer. Classing styling disguises the electric propulsion provided by the 24 V battery system, driving the F35 to a top speed of 30 knots, with a cruise speed of 22 knots and a 100 nautical mile range at 20 knots. A coachroof hatch is convenient for drop in battery access.

A "C" category inshore design, the F35 is stable in up to two meter significant wave heights, capable in wind speeds up to Force 6. The Aft foil, as well as the forward foils, are constructed in titanium with a composite trailing edge.

A cool box keeps drinks and snacks chilled. A water ski attachment point is provided by an ensign post fitting.

Flying on foils with at 30 knots, the Spirit Yachts BARTech F35 looks like a solid classic wooden ... [+] boat, but takes to tech for a surprising turn.

About The Partnership

Portsmouth UK firm BAR Technologies partnered with Spirit Yachts to deliver this luxury launch that satisfies the aesthetic while providing speed with a more sustainable footprint. Using its America's Cup design expertise, BAR Technologies was able to extend both speed and distance with this design, while maintaining the chic classic profile owned by Spirit Yachts.

The partnership of Spirit Yachts and BAR Technologies offers a blend of old and new in their F35 ... [+] foiling launch.

BAR Technologies CEO John Cooper notes, "The electric flyer will be the first of a series of boats we design to break new ground as we move into a greener generation of leisure yachts. The Spirit BARTech F35 is a boat of pure elegance that cannot help but attract interest."

Spirit Yachts' Karen Underwood adds, Öur collaboration with BAR Technologies is the epitome of the modern classic ethos on which Spirit Yachts was founded. Beautiful, clean, classic lines and sustainable timber construction married with forward-thinking technology from BAR with no compromise on comfort and efficiency."

Pointing toward a more sustainable yachting lifestyle never looked better.

Authorities in New Jersey are investigating a "tragic boating accident" that left a teenage girl dead.

Zeina Mahafzah, an 18-year-old, from Wayne, New Jersey, was attempting to board a boat from a raft being pulled by the boat in the waters off Sunset Park in Harvey Cedars, about an hour from Atlantic City, around 4:30 p.m. Sunday when she was struck by the vessel's propeller and fatally injured, New Jersey State Police said Monday.

Police said the incident was under investigation and no further information on the incident was immediately available.

While authorities did not share further details, NBC10 Philadelphia reported the boat was being driven by her father and multiple others were traumatized in the accident and were later evaluated by EMS.

Paris hilton sparks concerns over son phoenix, 1, not wearing life jacket on a boat: ‘crazy scary’.

Paris Hilton

That’s not hot.

Paris Hilton sparked backlash for posting a video of her 19-month-old son Phoenix on a catamaran without wearing a life jacket.

In the TikTok shared Wednesday, Hilton’s baby boy adorably crawled and walked around the boat in a cute burgundy outfit while being filmed by his famous mom.

Paris Hilton's son Phoenix

However, critics in the comments section were more focused on the fact that Hilton didn’t put a life jacket on Phoenix.

“Momma, please have him wear a life jacket always on a boat!!” someone wrote. “Stuff happens. That’s why they’re called accidents.”

“My anxiety not seeing him in a life jacket!! Can never be too safe on the water!” another person wrote.

Paris Hilton's son Phoenix

“Walking on the net over the open water terrified me,” a different fan said.

A fourth person wrote, “It makes me nervous. He needs a life jacket on. I worry so much about him.”

Another comment called Hilton’s video of Phoenix “crazy scary,” while someone else said their “heart palpitated” seeing the 1-year-old without a life jacket on.

Paris Hilton with her son Phoenix

Hilton eventually responded to the concerns in a comment on the video.

“Hey Mamma’s, thank you for the advice & always caring about my #CutesieCrew,” she wrote.

“It’s a big boat & my husband and I are following him around everywhere & watching like hawks,” Hilton continued. “My babies are my world.”

Paris Hilton

The famous socialite shares Phoenix with her husband, Carter Reum. They welcomed Phoenix via surrogate in January 2023.

The couple also share 9-month-old daughter London . She was born via surrogate in November 2023.

Hilton gushed over Phoenix while sharing the 1-minute-long boat video that was played to Ed Sheeran’s song “Photograph.”

“Watching Phoenix explore the world has been so special to me. I am so grateful to be a #SlivingMom,” Hilton’s caption read.

Paris Hilton and Carter Reum with their two children

After Phoenix was born, Hilton had to speak out against haters who were making fun of the newborn’s head.

“There are some sick people in this world,” she commented on a video of her son in October 2023. “My angel is perfectly healthy.”

Paris Hilton with her son Phoenix

She added: “And yes, of course, he has been to a doctor, he just has a large brain.”

In a lengthier message on her Instagram Story, the “Simple Life” alum said that the comments about Phoenix were “unacceptable” but sadly “inevitable” being that she’s in the public eye.

“This hurts my heart more deeply than words can describe,” Hilton wrote.

Paris Hilton with her son and daughter

While Hilton loves being a mom of two, she’s made it clear that she wouldn’t mind having another child — specifically another daughter.

“I would love a sister for London because my sister and I have such a close relationship,” Hilton told E! News in April, referring to her older sister Nicky Hilton, 40.

“I don’t know, I’m just enjoying them both so much right now. But that would be really amazing,” she added.

An 18-year-old was fatally struck by a boat propeller’s blade in Ocean County over the weekend, officials said Monday.

Zeina Mahafzah, of Wayne, was on a raft being pulled by a boat in the waters off Sunset Park in Harvey Cedars around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, said New Jersey State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron.

Sunset Park is on the bay side of Harvey Cedars, which is located on the northern section of Long Beach Island.

“While attempting to board the vessel, she was struck by the vessel’s propeller,” police said.

The incident remains under investigation, police said. No further information was immediately available.

On Sunday, Harvey Cedars police said they were investigating a “tragic boating accident” in the waters off Long Beach Island.

“As the investigation is in its preliminary stages, we ask that you keep the family and community in your thoughts and prayers,” police said in a Facebook post Sunday.

Mahafzah graduated from Wayne Hills High School, Wayne Township Superintendent Mark Toback said.

“We have been in contact with the family and are respecting their wishes, so we have no comment at this time,” he said.

OLD BRIDGE, New Jersey (WABC) -- Two people were injured after a boat exploded at a marina in New Jersey on Wednesday.

Authorities say officers responded to a boat explosion at the Raritan Marina, located at 1707 Rt. 35 in Laurence Harbor in Old Bridge, around 3:20 p.m.

The explosion launched a 57-year-old resident into the water. He was pulled out by bystanders.

He suffered burns to his face and legs and was airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick for treatment.

A 47-year-old South Amboy resident suffered blast injuries from glass to his stomach and arms. He was taken to Bayshore Medical Center for treatment.

First responders, including police, fire and EMS crews quickly arrived at the scene to aid the injured and secure the area.

FDNY marine teams also responded and helped local fire departments.

The charred-out boat eventually sank from the weight of the water as fire crews put out the flames.

Killer whales attack another sailboat off Spain, prompting complex rescue that injures crewmember

By Emily Mae Czachor

Updated on: August 26, 2024 / 4:08 PM EDT / CBS News

Orcas slammed into a sailboat off the coast of northwestern Spain on Sunday, damaging its rudder and prompting a complicated rescue operation that left one crew member seriously injured, officials said, marking the latest incident of the predators attacking a vessel in the region.

It wasn't known exactly how many orcas — also known as killer whales — were involved in the attack near O Roncudo along the rocky cliffs of the Spanish province of Galicia. Spain's maritime rescue service said two people on board the boat, called the Amidala, sent out a mayday at around 4 p.m. GMT to the dispatch center in Cape Finisterre, an area also marked by rocky shores and, at the time, rough seas.

The man and woman who crewed the Amidala haven't been identified by name, but the rescue service described them as Belgian nationals. Their boat sailed under the Finnish flag.

Another vessel with the Spanish maritime rescue service sailed for hours to the Amidala through adverse weather, which included waves nearly 10 feet high and winds of up to 40 miles per hour, the rescue service said. While arranging the towing operation that would allow the rescue vessel to slowly pull the sailboat to a port at Camariñas, the woman on board the Amidala seriously injured her hand and was airlifted back to land. The towing mission eventually ended with the sailboat docked just before 9:30 p.m.

amidala.jpg

Manuel Capeáns, who leads the rescue coordination center in Cape Finisterre, in a statement commended the Amidala's crew and everyone involved in the recovery for successfully completing the operation in such harsh conditions.

The incident on Sunday is just the latest in a string of accounts of orcas severely damaging sailboats in Spanish waters and across the surrounding region. In May, a sailing yacht sunk after killer whales attacked it in the Strait of Gibraltar, a narrow waterway connecting the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea between southern Spain and Morocco. The unknown number of orcas in that ordeal slammed into the vessel carrying two people and caused a water leak, according to Spain's maritime rescue center. Those crew members were rescued by a passing oil tanker.

Orca attacks on sailboats have apparently become more common in recent years. Reports of killer whale interactions with humans more than tripled over the last two years, according to a research group called GTOA, which documents such incidents in and around the Atlantic Iberian Peninsula.

The group said it has recorded hundreds of those interactions since 2020, although researchers noted that orcas' behavior in the Strait of Gibraltar and Bay of Biscay — another hotspot for killer whale interactions — dropped significantly between January and May of this year compared with the last three years' average figures over those same months.

Sailors have resorted to everything from throwing sand in the water to setting off fireworks to blasting thrash metal music in efforts to ward off the encroaching predators.

National News | N.J. teen killed by boat propeller days before starting college

An 18-year-old New Jersey woman was killed in a horrible boat accident, officials said. (Shutterstock)

New Jersey state police identified the victim on Monday as Zeina Mahafzah, of Wayne. She was rafting in the waters off Sunset Park — on the bay side of Harvey Cedars, along the northern section of Long Beach Island — just before she died on Sunday, New Jersey State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron told NJ.com.

Mahafzah, a recent graduate of Wayne Hills High School, was due to begin college at Rutgers University next week.

Around 4:30 p.m., 18-year-old Mahafzah attempted to climb from the raft onto the boat that had been pulling it through the waters. Instead, she was hit by the vessel’s propeller and suffered “fatal injuries,” police said in a statement.

Harvey Cedars police described it as a “ tragic boating accident ,” which remains under investigation.

“As the investigation is in its preliminary stages, we ask that you keep the family and community in your thoughts and prayers,” police said.

No further details were provided.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet

In 1959 Carl Alberg was commissioned by Pearson Yachts to design a 22-foot cruiser suitable for racing in the Midget Ocean Racing Club (MORC). This was the ELECTRA, which had a masthead rig, a small, self-bailing cockpit, and a cabin with galley space, head and bunks. About 350 ELECTRAS were built over the next six years.

Pearson dealers surmised that prospective Electra buyers might prefer the boat with a larger cockpit and smaller cabin. They passed the information along to Pearson, who subsequently asked Alberg to design a day sailor, suitable for one-design racing, based on the ELECTRA hull.

Other changes made included moving the mast six inches s forward, increasing the area of the mainsail, and reducing the height of the fore triangle.

The ELECTRA DAY SAILOR, as it was first called, was an instant success: 219 were sold in the first year (1962). At this time, the first class racing was organized (Fleet #l, out of Larchmont, New York).

The next year saw 213 more boats built and nine more fleets formed - in Houston, Texas; Hingham, Massachusetts; Providence, Rhode Island; Huntington and Port Washington, New York, Miami, Florida; Gibson Island, Maryland; and Falmouth, Maine. The last known builder (2003) was Ensign Spars Inc. of Dunedin, FL (USA).

Ensign Classic

Carl Alberg's stable one-design and daysailer gets a second life

What is it about the Ensign? It seems almost every sailor has an Ensign story lurking in the closet. Built by Pearson and launched in the early 1960s, the Ensign was dubbed, "the little big boat," and indeed, sailing an Ensign has provided many skippers with their first "big boat" experience.

The Ensign, which was designed by Carl Alberg in 1962 and is a recent addition to the American Sailboat Hall of Fame, remained in production until 1983 with 1,776 boats built. The boat features long overhangs, a flat sheerline, low freeboard, slab-sided topsides and a cutaway full keel with an attached rudder. The boat's most distinctive feature is a long, deep cockpit with mahogany coaming boards and a short cuddycabin. Displacement is 3,000 pounds, including 1,200 pounds of lead ballast.

Although the Ensign class association remained active after the boat went out of production, if you wanted to own an Ensign your only option was to purchase a used boat; at least until 2000 when the Ensign went back into limited production thanks to the Ensign Spars Company of Dunedin, Florida. Founded in 1995 by Ensign sailor and enthusiast Zeke Durica, the company was originally just a part-time business that made replacement masts and booms. Soon, however, Durica was supplying a variety of parts, refurbishing old Ensigns and toying with notion of building new boats. After locating the original molds in a Texas field, he made the plunge. Today, Ensign Spars is the licensed builder of the new Ensign Classic.

Already building the fourth Classic, Durica is dedicated to creating a boat with more options than the original production model. But the Ensign Classic still conforms to strict one-design rules and can race against boats built in 1962. The Classics, which began with hull No. 2,000, are available on a semicustom basis. Durica's 2,300-square-foot shop is set up to build two or three boats at a time.

The details The Ensign Classic is laminated to the same rugged scantlings as the old boats, with a solid glass hull and cored deck. Positive flotation in the form of closed-cell foam is sealed in the lazarette, under the bunks and cabin sole, and behind the keel trunk. The ballast is internal, and the large rudder is fiberglass. The aluminum spar supports a fractional rig. The interior features a V-berth, with a porta-potty in between and room for a small table.

The finish work on the new boats is excellent. Needless to say, you won't be buying a new Ensign Classic for the accommodations, but the cabin does provide a place to rest your body after a day of sailing, and when coupled with a boom tent, the Ensign Classic can be a comfortable camper/cruiser.

The large cockpit is the heart of the boat, and the Ensign Classic is available with either a fiberglass or teak sole, while the coaming boards can be mahogany or teak. Sail controls are led aft to jammers on the cabintop. The headsail sheet winches are mounted on molded coamings with the genoa tracks outboard. The wooden laminated tiller is mounted on a small bridgedeck aft. The mainsheet is led aft, and a traveler is optional.

"We're not just another sport boat," joked Durica, and the Ensign doesn't have to be. Indeed, one of the reasons for the Ensign's enduring popularity is undoubtedly the fact that it is a safe, stable boat that lends confidence to new sailors but also continues to challenge racing veterans.

Under way The Ensign Classic, like the original, has an easy motion in a seaway with a reluctance to pound even when sailing hard on the wind. Off the wind, the performance is surprising, and the 375-square-foot chute turbocharges the boat. The Ensign is surprisingly nimble when close tacking around the buoys.

Although the Ensign can be raced under PHRF, it is more fun to race against other Ensigns, and the Ensign National Class Association sponsors a national championship regatta every year. In addition, there are 45 active fleets around the country with which to hone your racing skills during the rest of the year.

One feature that has changed since the original Ensign was launched in 1962 is the price. Early boats sold for $2,500, but Ensign Spars is offering the new Classic Ensigns at a base price of $27,500 with fiberglass cockpit seats and floors. When you add sails, safety gear and an outboard engine, you'll be up over $30,000. Still, few boats can offer more fun, pound for pound or dollar for dollar, than the new Classic Ensign.

About Ensign Class Association

The Ensign is the largest class of full keel sailboats in North America, with over 2000 boats manufactured since 1962. Designed by Carl Alberg, its sustained popularity is due to very solid and durable construction, and a design that lends itself equally and admirably to comfortable family cruising, enjoyable day sailing, and close, strategic, tactical racing. The Ensign Class is one of the strongest national organizations, with numerous local fleets from coast to coast.

As a family day sailor, the Ensign has a large, deep cockpit, with enough room to comfortably seat six to eight adults. Its full keel provides a secure, stable ride, and its three foot draft makes it perfect for the shallower waters of bays and lakes and for anchoring fairly close to a protected shore. The cabin space is more than adequate for keeping lots of gear dry and can shelter two in a storm.

As a day sailor, the Ensign is a really enjoyable performer. The helm has a nice feel on all points of sail, and the boat has a versatile head sail inventory, including a working jib, a blade, #2 and #1 genoas, and a spinnaker. Single-handing is easy and exhilarating with the main and blade combination, especially if one includes the optional cabin top winches. For even easier head sail handling, it can be equipped with a roller furler.

The Ensign is 22 and 1/2 feet long, weighs about 3,000 pounds, and is best raced with a crew of four. Favored by former dinghy sailors and cruisers alike, it has no life lines and therefore many dinghy techniques (hiking, roll tacking, etc) can be used effectively. Racing is very close, strategic and tactical, with older boats performing just as well as the newer ones. This year’s national champion was built in 1964, and last year’s champion was built in 1966… testimony to the solid construction and durable design of the boat. The Ensign Class Association promotes and develops one design racing under uniform class rules, and rigidly maintains the one design features of the Ensign. New Ensigns continue to be manufactured by Ensign Spars, Inc., in Marquette, Michigan, using the original molds purchased from Pearson Yachts.
