Job of Moscow

Our father among the saints Job ( + 1607) was the first Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. He is commemorated by the Church on June 19 and April 5 .

St Job was born into the family of pious tradesmen in Staritsa near Tver in the 1530s. His baptismal name was John. As a teenager, John knew most of the biblical texts by heart and strove to become a monk . His father, however, insisted on his marriage . Once, John asked his father's permission to see his confessor in the Uspensky Monastery in their native town of Staritsa (Tver Oblast). Upon his arrival, John immediately took monastic vows and assumed the name of Job. He spent fifteen years in the cloister and finally became its abbot in 1566 with the help of Ivan the Terrible , who had made Staritsa his residence in times of the Oprichnina (secret police).

In 1571, Job was transferred to Moscow and appointed abbot of the Simonov Monastery . In 1575, he became the abbot of the Novospassky Monastery. In 1581, Job was appointed bishop of Kolomna.

Known as a person of mediocre mental abilities, he, nevertheless, managed to draw attention of Boris Godunov by his talent for reading the longest of prayers by heart in a very expressive manner. During the reign of Feodor I (whose government was controlled by Boris Godunov), Job was appointed archbishop of Rostov and Metropolitan of Moscow and All Russia in 1587.

Realizing the necessity of strengthening the ecclesiastic authority in Russia , Godunov managed to persuade the Patriarch of Constantinople Jeremias II to establish a patriarchate in Russia. On January 26 , 1589, Job was elected the first Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. He exercised all his influence and played a major part in Boris Godunov's ascending to the Russian throne.

Job did not approve, however, Godunov's proposal to open a university in Moscow with foreign professors because he believed their influence and non- Orthodox faith would cause "heterodoxy" and endanger the authority of the Russian Church. Under Job's supervision, the Russians corrected books for divine service and prepared them for publishing.

He assisted in glorification of some of the Russian saints , ordering the celebration of the memory of Basil Fool for Christ in 1588, as well as that of Joseph Volotsky and others. Job also favored the construction of new cathedrals and monasteries and Christian missionary activities in the recently conquered Astrakhan Khanate and Siberia. After the mysterious death of tsarevich Dmitry Ivanovich in 1591, Jove accepted the noncriminal version of his demise, supporting Boris Godunov every step of the way.

After the invasion of False Dmitriy I and sudden death of Boris Godunov on June 1 , 1605, there was an uprising in Moscow.

Job was known as a harsh critic of False Dmitriy I, and he tried to persuade the people of Moscow to remain loyal to the deceased tsar. The armed supporters of the impostor burst into the Cathedral of the Dormition, and a boyar named P.F. Basmanov declared Job a traitor. Job was sent into exile to his monastery in Staritsa, where he went completely blind and finally died a very sick man in 1607.

In 1652, Job's relics were transferred to the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Moscow Kremlin, where they remain to this day. Patriarch Job was glorified as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1989.

Council approves design for Cape Coral Yacht Club

The first option had a “Key West, old Florida” architectural style. The second option was based on the existing yacht club building, and the third option was a contemporary architectural design.

The Radisson Royal Hotel Moscow is a luxury chain property on the riverfront of the Moskva River. The Soviet Baroque building is one of Stalin's Seven Sisters skyscrapers, which define Moscow's skyline. Today, its interior features posh Regency-style decor in its 497 rooms and suites. Rooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, but you'll have to upgrade for an iPad and espresso machine. Hotel highlights include a spa, stunning indoor lap pool, large gym, a selection of restaurants and bars, and cruises on the hotel’s private yachts. There's extra security for the safety of the high-end clientele of foreign dignitaries and business travelers that are usually hosted here. For something that’s within walking distance of the city center, consider the five-pearl Hotel Baltschug Kempinski Moscow which has both Old World splendor and a juice bar.

Oyster hotel review, luxurious hotel with soviet past and a high-end clientele.

Originally built as one of Stalin's Seven Sisters skyscrapers in 1953, the building was first home to Hotel Ukraine. The Soviet Baroque building (it takes up most of the block) looks almost like a castle, built in the wedding cake style with winding spires that are impressively lit up at night. Inside, the design and atmosphere is opulent and grand from the gold laden decor to the receptionists with old-fashioned uniforms topped with charming hats. Floors are made from Indian granite and columns were constructed from Italian marble. Paintings by Russian artists, such as Vasily Polenov, hang on the walls. 

This property attracts a top clientele of politicians, dignitaries, business travelers, and couples wanting a luxe stay. Their personal drivers and cars are parked right out front and ready on cue. With a demanding clientele comes high prices and strict security. Officers are stationed at the hotel's entrance to do a full security screening of every guest through a metal detector. Though the practice ensures top safety at the hotel, it can feel a bit intimidating and cold.  Despite the high-quality design and luxe atmosphere, there are some complaints about issues with checking in such as being placed in the incorrect rooms or chilly reception from staff. 

On the Moskva Riverfront, far from many of Moscow's attractions 

This waterfront hotel's location is for those who don’t mind taking public transportation or a car to visit Moscow's city center. Attractions like the Kremlin, Red Square, and Saint Basil’s Cathedral take about a 15-minute drive or a 17-minute bus ride to reach. The hotel is surrounded by parks, restaurants, and the picturesque Moskva River. Expect a 15-minute walk to a mall and the nearest metro stop. It’s a 35-minute drive to Sheremetyevo International Airport.

Sophisticated rooms with flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning; some have river views and iPads

The hotel has 497 rooms and suites, all of which offer an elegant Recency-style decor that features opulent colors of gold, cream, and soft blues. The overall look is luxurious with sumptuous carpet or wooden floors, high-quality fabrics, and substantial furniture. Guests have noted that Classic Rooms are unsatisfactorily small for their tastes. Though the rooms are on point when it comes to style, in-room amenities aren’t very impressive. Sure, they have flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, laptop-sized safes, and air-conditioning, but they lack minibars and coffee- and tea-making facilities. Deluxe Rooms and above, however, are equipped with espresso machines. Grand Executive Suites and Romantic Suites offer Bang & Olufsen entertainment centers, discounts to the on-site Farsi Restaurant, a Netbook or iPad, and a free cruise on a yacht. The Presidential Suite gets all of this, plus extra rooms and a kitchen. Unless you're a head of state or dignitary, you won't get access to the suite anyway. 

Bathrooms, like the rooms, are luxe. They come with Penhaligon's London toiletries, bottled water, hairdryers, bidets, and shower/tub combos. Some suites have jetted tubs and tropical rain showers. A few bathrooms have stunning river views and striped or floral wallpaper. 

For those with extended stays in Moscow, consider booking one of the hotel’s 38 serviced one- or two-bedroom apartments. They include their own separate entrance and are located on the higher floors for the best views of the city. 

Multiple dining outlets, a luxury spa, and private yachts 

The Radisson Royal Hotel Moscow’s features are really quite impressive. The standout amenity is the fleet of yachts that guests can book for river cruises along the Moskva River. There’s also a wellness center that offers beauty treatments, massages, and a large lap pool that’s complemented by two hot tubs. The gym is well-equipped with Technogym cardio and weight equipment, though it has limited hours.

As far as dining options go, there are five restaurants that range from Russian cuisine to Middle Eastern fare like Iranian food. The Tatler Club Restaurant offers beautiful river views during the meal. Each morning a huge breakfast buffet spread is laid out. It includes hot and cold Russian and Western selections, for a fee. Room service is available 24 hours. The hotel’s three bars offer something a little different at each. There's 24-hour service with food, high-rise views of Moscow, or karaoke with drinks. Tourists and locals alike visit the Troubadour Karaoke Bar which spans the top three floors and has a fun atmosphere. Business travelers will appreciate 14 fully-equipped meeting rooms that hold up to 1,000 guests, plus free Wi-Fi throughout. Parking is available for a fee. For guests who want to do a bit of shopping, the hotel features boutiques with high-end jewelry and fashion.

West Australian government to curb Kimberley tourism attraction Horizontal Falls in 2028

Tourists will no longer be allowed to pass through gaps at the iconic Horizontal Falls in the Kimberley region by 2028, in a bid by the government to "strike a balance" between tourism and protecting the environment.

The falls form when seawater rushes with the ebb and flow of the tide through two short and narrow gorges about 300 metres apart, which boats pass through.

Traditional owners have welcomed the decision announced by the West Australian government on Friday, which would see crossing through the falls phased out by March 2028.

To fill the gap, Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti said the government would work with tourism operators and traditional owners to develop "new tourism experiences" to showcase the site.

"Our government is absolutely committed to developing more tourism experiences in all our national parks, and key to that is maintaining public access for visitors," she said.

Debate around continuing the tourism experience has been underway since an incident in May 2022 .

Dozens were injured when a jet boat crashed into a rock wall at the falls.

Under the new arrangement, the marine park's largest licensed tour provider, Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures, will continue to travel through the gap until its licence expires in 2028.

All other licensed operators will stop passing through the falls by the end of 2026.

Environment Minister Reece Whitby said visitor access and tourism would remain a key value of the marine park.

Traditonal owners finally heard

Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporation (DAC) said it welcomed the government's announcement to protect cultural heritage at Garaan-ngaddim (Horizontal Falls).

Traditional Owners said they had voiced concerns about harmful impacts on cultural heritage and a number of incidents at the site since the 1990s.

"This has been an emotionally trying journey for many of us," DAC said.

"With this decision, we finally feel we have been heard."

DAC said it was grateful for the genuine and respectful engagement of tourism operators and the government, and committed to ensuring tourists were still attracted to the region.

"We understand that change can be scary… but like the changes to climbing Uluru, we hope that in time people will understand and respect our decision to put cultural heritage values and safety first."

Impact on tourism jobs

Tourism Council WA chief executive Evan Hall said the decision was a blow to tourists and tourism jobs.

"Traversing the Horizontal Falls is a national award-winning, once-in-a-lifetime bucket list experience that has been bringing visitors from around the world to the Kimberley," he said.

"Without the worldwide appeal of traversing the Horizontal Falls, it will be extremely difficult to create commercially viable Aboriginal tourism experiences at the falls."

Mr Hall said closing day tours alone would result in a lose of $15 million and 58 full-time equivalent jobs from the region per year.

But Australia's North West Tourism CEO Bill Tatchell said tourists were increasingly calling for culturally sensitive and respectful experiences.

He said the closure of the falls was an opportunity to "grow and evolve" destinations.

"We have incredible opportunities for storytelling and the absolute unique experiences to engage with our traditional owners to tell those stories for businesses," Mr Tatchell said.

"To engage in a meaningful, authentic way that does not cause disrespect or discomfort to the traditional owners," he said.

"That is one of the elements the modern traveler is looking for."

Mr Tatchell said he was hopeful the government's promise of new tourism experiences would reduce the impact on his members and the community.
