The Best Among Popular Marmaris International Yacht Club

Marmaris international yacht club

The Best Among Popular Marmaris International Yacht Club was founded in 1992 by the yachtsmen and women of Marmaris. Prior to the formation of the club, these people would hold various amateur races between themselves but once the club was set up, they saw an opportunity to create an official get-together and organised the first Marmaris Race Week.

The MIYC has about 200 members today and each year during the Marmaris Race Week, hosts around 200 yachts and 2000 racers from all over the world.

The MIYC has also been the main body responsible for the organisation of the Marmaris Yacht Festival for many years. This is an international event which gives the local crewed charter yachts and local agencies to promote themselves and the Turkish coast as a charter destination.

MIYC has started the Yacht and Yacht Equipment’s Fair with a couple of stands on the first years of the festival. Now it has expanded its activity range with the yacht and yacht equipment’s fair by organizing it as a separate event since 2001. The fair is organized by the time of festival each year and it provides an extra potential to the region’s existing maritime business.

Martı Marina & Yacht Club - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024) - Tripadvisor

From CruisersWiki

Marmaris is a major yacht harbor in SE Turkey within a landlocked bay. It is very busy and noisy at peak holiday periods. The town was attractive but it has been overrun by rowdy tourists. Fortunately the old town retains some of its older charm. It is surrounded however by the worst of sprawl with eating establishments catering to foreign tastes proudly advertising their non-turkish specialties such as: roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, fish & chips, and full English breakfasts while broadcasting ear splitting rap "music". The Turkey I have grown to love has been displaced here. Even the wonderful Turkish ice-cream, dandurma , has been replaced by the insipid international brands. During the tourist season the beach is wall to wall raw human flesh with a very strong smell of sun tanning cream. Definitely best experienced out of season.

It is best to approach Marmaris via the channel (Sark Boğazi) between Keçi Adasi to the W and Yildiz or Nimara Adasi to the E, staying in the middle of the channel.

Warning: There can be very strong gusts in Sark Boğazi when there is a strong southerly wind.

All three marinas also have a Customs man who does check ins/out for a fee of course. Otherwise one reports to the "doctor", passport police and customs in the Ferry Terminal and then to the Harbourmaster in the town - in this order for checking in. For checking out it is in the reverse order but the doctor is omitted. A Transit Log can be bought at the Chamber of Shipping Offices in the Arcade around the corner from the Harbourmaster's office. We have always found it prudent to purchase a new Transit Log when checking in or out if we are staying in Turkey as the Log is only valid fo 1 check in and 1 check out. It is quite a walk from ferry terminal to the Harbour master so great to have it ready for use.

Marmaris Harbor

Harbour icon

There are two possibilities in Marmaris harbor: the Netsel Marina , with all the amenities, and the municipal yacht quay. This latter is always busy with local and daily tour boats, hence, very difficult to get a berth.

In addition to Netsel Marina , there are two more marinas in the area: Albatros Marina and Yacht Marina .

For those who wants to stay in anchor, there are two options; in front of the beach W of main harbour or in front of Yacht Marin. Both anchorages are generally safe and hold pretty well with sand buttom but be aware of Eastely or Southerlies that enter the bay from Yalanci Bogaz (where Yat Marin is located); they can reach over 50 kts..

Ekincik Liman

Anchorage icon

Ekincik is 20 nm East of Marmaris almost half way to Göçek or Fethiye and is a cove with several anchorages and a restaurant quay with laid moorings. It is the most convenient place to stay for visiting the near by delta of the Köycegiz Çay (river). Up river is the ancient Caunus , the picturesque village of Dalyan , and the green Köycegiz Golü lake.

In the last several years many Turkish and foreign journalists under the influence of Mr. Kurt owner of Sardis Tours (one of the day-trip operators) have staged a partially successful campaign to block development along the beach of the estuary of the Dalyan river which is, along with Zakynthos , one of the main breeding grounds of the threatened sea turtles Caretta caretta .

There are two areas that you can anchor, both which can get crowded. The SW cove is usually the least crowded. If you anchor there you should take a very long line to a tree. The NE cove is the most crowded but it also affords the best protection from the meltemi . Depths are 8-15 m and the bottom is sand with good holding. During the day there is continuous traffic of day-trip boats to the river.

In the E cove, the My Marina restaurant has constructed a very attractive quay with laid moorings, water and electricity and space for up to 20 yachts. Depth on the outer T >3m, along the wall 1.5 - 2.5m. Obviously, if you use the moorings, you are expected to dine in the restaurant. Restaurant is attractive and only a bit expensive. You should have a long line at the bow ready on arrival for the "sailors" (who meet arriving yachts in a RIB) to take through an eye in the mooring line and pass back to you.

Provisioning

There are many supermarkets in city center, most of them are open 7/24 during the high season.

  • There are many restaurants. It is best to stay within the old town
  • Two of the best (no hassle) are in the Marina area on way into Old Town

Transportation

  • 60 km to Dalaman Airport -€126 in 2009
  • In the summer daily ferries to Rhodes 50 mins in Catamaran

Places to Visit

From ekinçik liman.

A visit to the river and Caunus is a must. It seems that as soon as you anchor a day trip boat will come and you can make arrangements for a day excursion. The cost can be steep ($170 in 1997 for a party of 3). You can contact Mr. Abidir Kurt of Sardis Tours on the VHF channel 6 or on his mobil phone +90 532 281 6411.

The river, Köyceğiz Çay , is breathtaking but now there are appreciably fewer birds and other wildlife. They used to be, being scared by the constant traffic and noise of the day trip boats.

Half way to Dalyan is Caunus which was an important Carian city and was a member of the Delian League . Today one can see the remains of the acropolis, theater, several temples, and baths, as well as the many Lycian tombs carved on the slopes.

The town of Dalyan is picturesque but it is overwhelmed with tourists and overpriced restaurants serving indifferent food (however, statue of a sea turtle taking off is impressive and worth a stop).

Although it is not part of the standard tour a visit to lake of Köycegiz Golü is worth taking. The waters of the lake are of a deep green color. It is also worthwhile to visit Sultaniye on the W side of the lake. It is a hot spring spa and totally unspoiled by tourism. Many people go to a building which has a pool where they plunge into the water which reaches 41° C. After they soak in the pool, they plunge again into the cool lake. In Sultaniye there is a wood-burning bakery where one can buy very tasty bread.

If you don’t have a skipper within your group, and also want to charter a larger boat , than you’ll need to charter a skippered yacht with crew , depending on the size of the boat. This is the best option so that you can take the advantage your skipper’s experience and knowledge of the sailing the Turkey coasts, as well as towns and anchorage areas.

With a crewed or skippered charter, you’ll have a professional skipper and crew who will navigate the boat, prepare meals, and take care of all the details of the journey. This is a great option for those who want to relax and enjoy the journey without any worries.

Catered or self-catered charter

This is offered by many companies that you’ll be able to plan and decide the meals and provisions you want to include on your package before you book your charter. You can also check and choose from the many private chefs and caterers for your Turkey blue cruise, to let them prepare your meals for full trip or just the odd night.

Depending on your preference, you can choose between a catered or self-catered charter. With a catered charter , you’ll have a chef on board who will prepare all your meals according to your preferences.

With a self-catered charter , you’ll be responsible for preparing your own meals, but you’ll have access to a fully equipped kitchen on board. This is a great option for those who want to have control over their meals or want to save money by preparing their own food.

Things to Plan Before You Book

Before you make enquiry or plan your yacht and gulet holidays in Turkey, you’ll need to decide the number of people you plan on taking on the boat, the duration of your holidays, and whether you want a skipper or not . Also make sure that if you don’t have a qualified captain within your group, you’ll need one.

Choosing the Boat

Below are the recommendations for choosing the suitable boat for your blue voyage trip.

* The boat should be well cared and in good condition. The construction year of the boat or its being new is not that important. Maintenance is the most important thing.

* You should determine your expectations and needs first. You should decide the boat you’ll choose after a conversation with the agency or captain.

* The price of the boat is related with the size of the boat and the equipment. Don’t forget that the bigger and expensive boat doesn’t mean that it will meet your expectations.

* The electricity in the most yachts is 12/24 volts. You should keep this in your mind and talk with the captain if you are willing to bring electrical stuff with you such as shavers, players, cell phones or computers.

Some Insider Tips

* Early booking is the key option when you plan your blue voyage holidays. You can get really good discounts if you book early in advance, while you may face limited yachts/gulet on the last minute season.

* Last minute bookings can have bigger discounts, but keep in mind that you’ll have less options of the boats.

* If you’ll check for last minute deals, that we recommend you to ask your Charter Agent and take their advice for the Best Value for Price , not the biggest discount.

* Make your own yacht and gulet search from the quality charter agents websites (see below) with pictures, prices and types of the boats, so that you’ll have idea of what you’ll expect.

* Charter Agents will help you find and book the best deals, regarding their many years of experience. So don’t bother asking and searching the yacht & gulets with the agents.

* You can ask anything about your blue cruise plan, even ridiculous questions, and you can be sure that they’ll answer and help you with the best service.

Blue Cruise “Do Not Forget” List

Below are the things that you should not forget in your Blue Voyage trip.

* The first and the most important thing is to bring your camera or cam recorder. The surprises of nature in the company of isolated bays, wonderful beaches and historic scenes worth taking the records and photos.

* Do not bring large luggage. The cabins are not as huge as a hotel room. Blankets, big towels and sheets are served in the boats so you don’t need to bring that stuff with you.

* Bring extra swim suits, slippers, sunglasses, lotions for sunbathing, snorkeling equipment, fly protection lotions and medication.

* Bring walking shoes for the hiking tours, woolen shirts-jackets, shorts and pants for the cooler nights.

* For those who want to sleep on the deck in the nights, it is better to bring sleeping bag.

* Although every boat has its own entertainment stuff, it might be nice if you bring your own playing cards, games (i.e. chess, backgammon), books and music stuff with you.

How to Book Your Gulet Holidays?

* First of all, you’ll need to find an authorized and trusted charter agent who offers range of sailing yachts, motor yachts, gulets, catamarans and speedboats with different shapes and sizes and will assist you with every aspect of your gulet charter, from start to finish.

* Blue cruise and gulet holidays are usually booked weekly or 10-day programs.

* You can rent your own gulet or yacht in groups with your family, friends or loved ones. This is called yacht charter or gulet charter .

* If you are alone, couple or with a small number of friends, you can join the blue cruise in between mixed groups, which is called cabin charter .

* You are able to find lots of good charter agents providing gulet holidays. If you are asking our recommendations as insiders, here we only suggest the proven ways and top rated ones with travelers’ comments.

Marmaris Base

Palmiye Yacht Club of Orhaniye Kızkumu beach has become the second location preference of Sailfleet as of April 2022. Orhaniye is the first choice of many sailors with its safe location and its location overlooking the Hisarönü Gulf.

Sailing in Hisarönü Gulf

Thanks to the indented structure of the Hisarönü Gulf, this region also has many alternatives in terms of overnight stays, as in Göcek, but it also gives sailors the chance to sail in sheltered seas that do not raise much waves. If the overnight stay is to be made in the bays in the north of the gulf during southerly weather in this region, it is useful to be careful due to these bays are open to the southerly weather.

By restaurants in the bays in Hisarönü Gulf, you will meet the gourmet quality food that you have never tasted before, both seafood and meat derivatives.

Palmiye Yacht Club

At Palmiye Yacht Club, which will host our boats with its warm atmosphere and cute long T pier, you can taste delicious dishes in the restaurant or sip your cocktails in the pool during the preparation process of your boat.

In the fully equipped Palmiye Yacht Club, there are toilets and showers where you will feel as comfortable as at home. In case you arrive at your boat before your charter date, even if your boat does not have any vacancy, you can stay in the clean rooms of Palmiye Yacht Club.

Yacht & Catamaran Charter in Marmaris, Turkey

We can help you find the perfect yacht or catamaran to sail from Marmaris!

Marmaris yacht and catamaran charter

Sailing from Marmaris

Marmaris has all the right ingredients to be a stunning place to sail: sunshine, reliable winds, crystal clear seas, and plenty of interesting places to sail to: either heading west to find secluded bays and stronger winds out in the Med, or heading east past ‘Paradise island’ and finding small restaurants dotted in the hundreds of idyllic bays along the coast. There’s also revered mud-baths, ancient civilisations, blue lagoons, sea-turtles and other wildlife galore, and superb cuisine. What a place to sail!

Marmaris itself is a bit of a tourist resort for land-lubbers, so it is well connected to Europe, particularly during the summer months, when hundreds of flights a day arrive at the local Dalaman airport. Sailing is possible even as late as November, when there’s still good temperatures, and when the waters and winds are quieter than the main season. We can help you find and book your ideal yacht or catamaran, with one of our trusted Charter Partners - just get in touch or search in the pink box with live prices and availability !

Peak season is July to September, but sailing is pleasant here from March to October, and increasingly, November.

Why book with PlainSailing.com?

Suggested sailing itinerary, wind & weather conditions, marina details, sample prices   -   marmaris sailing itinerary  -   wind & weather  -   marina details, 6-day sailing itinerary from marmaris.

Marmaris is a fantastic place for a sailing holiday, and the absence of giant marinas means that it offers something different from Croatia and Greece – but something just as exciting. From Marmaris you can head west to the Dodecanese and the surrounding rugged coastline, or head east along the Turkish coast to find beaches, ancient settlements and mud-baths.

Marmaris - 6 day Sailing itinerary

It’s only a six-day itinerary because you can normally only get on the boat in the late afternoon on the first Saturday and you’ll spend the first day getting provisions in and getting familiar with the boat before setting off on Sunday morning. At the end of the week, you’ll need to get the boat back to Marmaris on Friday evening, before spending a final night on-board and then checking-out on Saturday morning.

Ciftlik

At the far end of Marmaris, look out for the Dolphinarium (the last place in Europe where you can visit captive dolphins – they are widely banned as people think Dolphins are too intelligent to be caged. This Dophinarium is run by a wilflife charity which offers the chance to swim with them to support their work.

We’re heading south then west, getting away from the hordes of tourists to the quiet bay of Ciftlik, where, nestled at the bottom of the steep mountains, you’ll find a fine sandy beach, four restaurants (complete with their own moorings, including water and electricity connections – a couple also offer wifi). It’s a place you can only really reach by boat, and it’s a great place to spend the night!

Bozzukale

We’re continuing on to Bozzukale to spend the night. It’s a secluded and beautiful bay with a selection of restaurants, mooring buoys (with free taxi services to dry land) and a public jetty. Aside from the nature (sea turtles are regular visitors to the bay, amongst others), you can hike to the ruins of an ancient castle, which is situated on the hillside above the bay and offers a good look-out to check if people in Rhodes are plotting anything nasty (as well as superlative views out to sea). In fact, Bozzukale means ‘ruined castle’ in Turkish.

Kumlubuk

In Kumlubuk, you’ll find delightfully warm crystal clear seas, sandy beaches, and plenty of places to relax and enjoy life. There’s also the largely ruined ancient settlement of Amos to visit if you fancy a hike, and if you’re bored of Turkish fayre (how could you be?), then you might be pleased to know that you can find one the best Chinese restaurants in Turkey here, complete with two chefs from Szechuan.

Ekincik

We’re spending the night in Ekincik, a well-protected bay which offers the usual lush semi-mountainous pine-tree forests and turquoise sea surroundings, peace and quiet, and a handful of restaurants and bars. It’s nice enough, but the main reason we’re here is to give you time to get yourselves set up for tomorrow...

From here, you can join a small locally organised tour boat which will take you through the reeds to the ruins of the ancient and prestigious city of Kaunos (highly recommended), the mud-baths of Dalyan (the mud here is alleged to take years off your age) or Iztzu beach (‘turtle beach’ where you’ll find hundreds of turtles during the breeding season). It’s possible to do all three in a morning or afternoon. (NB: You are not allowed to sail up to Dalyan yourselves).

Asi Koyu

There is a beach-bar in the bay, but this romantic setting is perfect for sampling the local wines, which are underrated - Turkey can actually stake two claims to be the birthplace of wine: grapes grow wild here and wine-making equipment found in present-day Armenia dates back to 4,100 BC (but they estimate that vines and wine have been cultivated since about 12,000 BC!)

The second claim is that in Genesis in the bible, Noah, after 40 days of floods on his ark, ‘planted a vineyard’ – the ark is reported to have landed near Mount Ararat, in Turkey. Many people have tried to find the ark (a bit like the Loch Ness monster) and some believe it is buried under the permanent snow-cap on Mount Ararat itself. Discuss.

Marmaris

But don’t worry – we still have a day of epic sailing in the sunshine to do first. Today is the longest leg, though at 24 nM, it hopefully shouldn’t feel like too much of a slog. You’ll likely be tacking up the prevailing wind with Paradise Island and, behind it, Marmaris, on the nose of the boat for the duration.

Maybe now is the time to get team-photo to remember this trip by: you can choose from the sea or a coastal backdrop, or you could even try and get one as you sail past Marmaris beach or castle. If you haven’t yet ventured into Marmaris itself, then it is worth a walk around: it has a long history and there are the modern day souks to haggle in, well-manicured beaches, and a lively bar atmosphere, particularly after sunset.

And then the holiday is over. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed exploring the orient, everyone got on well, and you’re leaving with even better friends than you arrived with. When you’re ready to start planning your next sailing adventure, head to PlainSailing.com! Safe travels, and hopefully see you soon :)

Sailing Conditions

Turkey Sailing - Wind Conditions

This makes it a little bit easier for last-minute changes of plan, when you see a cute littel bay, or hear something good about the taverna nearby, as here are plenty of spots to moor up without feeling too exposed.

In spring and autumn, other weather systems can also play a part for a few days at a time, so you might find winds arriving from the South. At the height of winter, winds can seemingly arrive from any direction.

Wind strengths and speeds also vary during the year, but tend to be between force 3 to 5 during summer – which is ideal sailing conditions – or stronger if you head out to the Dodecanese island. Winds are slightly stronger in winter.

Marmaris - Average Temperature

Netsel Marina, Marmaris

Marmaris Netsel marina is one of the biggest marinas in the Med, with space for over 830 boats. It's located within handy walking distance of the old town and the beaches, but it boasts so many facilities (tennis courts, swimming pool, a 40 store shopping-centre, a supermarket and multiple bars and restaurants) that you could get away without ever leaving the marina. And if you do want to explore the local area, there's also a car hire desk on-site. In short, it has everything you need for a pleasant start or end to the holiday, and it's busy in a nice way.

If your flights don't land or depart on a Saturday, and you need somewhere to spend a night or two before or after your charter, then we recommend staying at the Sunset Marmaris boutique hotel (the closest hotel to the marina), or the Blue Yacht Marina Aparthotel (which also offer 4 person apartments at great prices).

Netsel Marina, Marmaris

Marmaris Yacht Marina

Marmaris Yacht Marina is based in Adakoy, across the bay from Marmaris itself, and is beautifully located on a small spit of land connecting what would be an island to the mainland.  There isn't all that much in Adakoy, beside a few luxury resorts, but Marmaris centre is only 3km away, so a very short taxi ride.

Marmaris,Turkey can be one of the best choices for a blue cruise vacation in Turkey. If going to the Turkish Riviera, with its blue waters, white sands, and ample entertainment options is what you want to do – Marmaris can provide you with the ideal hybrid of the best of both worlds. It is both old and new, and both live respectfully next to each other.

Marmaris City guide

Marmaris is split into two sections, old town and new town. Old town features the narrowed cobbled street common to this area of the world, with rising plaster covered buildings. The colors displayed in old town, the cafes and the open air markets can really give you a feel of what Marmaris was like. In the new town you will encounter everything you would expect from a major city along the Turkish Riviera. There are modern restaurants, shops and clubs all there to provide you with the best food and entertainment you can find. One difference with Marmaris is the modern side of entertainment isn’t taken to such extremes as can happen in other cities. No matter how modern things get, there is still a feel of history to everything.

Gulet cruises out of Marmaris

There are several Gulet cruises by cabin charters that you can take out of Marmaris. The popular and cheper one is 7 nights Marmaris-Fethiye-Marmaris gulet cruise . If your choice is private charter, Marmaris is a pioneer city with its private gulet yachts . It is an ideal port to begin a Spring sea tour of the surrounding islands. There are also cultural tours that will take you to the various islands to see the artifacts left by all the cultures that have called the Aegean home. Diving, sailing, fishing and more are all available from the decks of your Gulet. Many of the ships also go from port to port and bring entertainers on board for a private dinner show too.

Highlights of the city

While there are a lot of new and trendy restaurants and clubs you should explore, you should make sure you see some of the highlights of Marmaris. These include the port itself. In the early morning and early evening the shipping Gulets return and it is a sight to see. You should also take a tour of the Byzantium chapels, churches and Minarets that are scattered throughout old town too. Venture out inland and you will discover plenty of hiking and biking opportunities as well.

What does the city offer to travelers?

Marmaris is a very modern city. While the ports are still active you will find them most active with the types of activities you will love doing. While there is much to do in the city, there are also diving and fishing charters you can take for the day to experience the waters before returning to the land for the evening. It is in the evening that Marmaris shines. It is considered to be one of the hottest nightspots in all of Turkey. You will find elegant dining, rave clubs, and dance clubs or bars every step of the way. If you want to take all that in, but not stay in the busy night life, consider staying aboard a Gulet for privacy.
