Guests usually book our hostess when they want to have a relaxing and a care-free sailing holiday in Croatia. She can perform various tasks, on board and off board, that you usually have to take care alone when you hire a bareboat sailing charter in Croatia . Our crew is all fluent in English and sometimes also multilingual. Basic assignments of a hostess

  • she prepares and serves two light meals daily (breakfast and one simple lunch). Extra meals are option with an additional fee.

A Tip: We advise to transfer her some APA money (advanced provisioning allowance) so that she can supply your boat before arrival.

The general assignment for cook on board is to prepare 3 meals a day , considering the client's preferences and what kind of food do they want. Usual fee for cook starts at  170€ per day . However, it can vary and mostly depends the boats size and number of the guests aboard.

Where does a hostess sleep?

The front bow cabins on catamarans are usually occupied with the crew, that is why we recommend to charter sailing yacht with 2 separate crew cabins. Most of the sailing catamarans in Croatia have such a layout. Sometimes, the crew can also sleep in the salon, but it is not something we advise, since everyone needs time to rest, so they can give you their best during the day.

It is also customary to take care of the crew's meals on your sailing trip. Feel free to invite your crew to join you at the dinner, they will be more than happy. If you wish to dine in privacy, they can east separately.

A Tip: When you hire a hostess you already have 2 meals included. That gives you extra time to explore the islands where you can dine in a local restaurant your crew will be happy to recommend. Here you can taste Dalmatian delicacies in fisherma's tavern called "konoba" - a must try!

Best time for sailing in Croatia is definitively in summer months June July and August when the weather is simply glorious and everything is in full swing.

Is it better to charter a sailboat or a catamaran?

It is all up to your expectations and your budget.

In Croatia you can charter almost everything that floats. To rent a sailing boat in Croatia with skipper assures you to discover the most beautiful islands at your own pace and with a flexible route itinerary. It is considered the most genuine and fashionable way of exploring Adriatic coast.

On sailboats you mostly depnd on winds, but sailing yacht will give you more sailing pleasures with minimum fuel consumption. Catamarans are wider, more stable, and extra comfortable. Commodity however, also means higher rental price, larger costs on fuel and marina fees.

When it comes to quality of staying on board, catamarans ensure more privacy and space. Most of the catamarans for chartering in Croatia have cozy flybridge that provides extra places to chill or sunbathe. If you want to move faster and your main concern is not large fuel consumption, simply hire a motor yacht.

If you think green, rent a sailboat

Less consumption means less exhaust into the sea. Especially if you are an active explorer, you will certainly try to stay most of the time under sails. Hiring a sailboat in Croatia is definitively more exciting, fun and authentic holiday experience with an opportunity to gain some sailing knowledge and participate in various activities during your yacht charter week.

Choosing a sailing boat to suit your travelling style and budget

To narrow your choice, you should first estimate how much space do you need and how high can you stretch. Larger the group, bigger the boat, bigger the yacht, larger the cost. When you plan  sailing trip with children , catamaran might be a better choice. If you stay on a budget, a sailing yacht with 2 steering wheels and bathing platform should do. Usually 2 families rent one catamaran to divide the costs. One hull for one family.

How long does a sailing trip last?

Croatia sailing charter runs on weekly basis from Saturday to Saturday. However, in shoulder season (September, May, October, June ) short sailing trips are also possible. To explore Croatia's coastline highlights and visit the most beautiful secluded treasures of the Dalmatian coast, we recommend to book one of our  7 day private sailing cruises .

Which islands are best to visit in Croatia?

Island hopping is one of the most exciting and authentic ways to travel around this hidden Mediterranean jewel. A week-long private Croatia sailing trip  is an exclusive way to explore some of the most remarkable Croatian islands, impressive marine national parks, hidden beaches with crystal clear water, secluded villages and genuine hospitality of the local people, inviting you to taste the topmost island culinary works of art.

Can you swim in Croatia in September?

September  and October are the perfect months for a relaxing sailing cruise in Croatia . The sea temperatures are pleasant for swimming and still above 20 o (70F). With abundance of sun (especially on the islands) the air keeps constant 25 o (77F) during the day almost until late October. Expect lower yacht rental prices, less crowds on city streets and ports, maritime traffic is lower and you can always get a free berth in marina.

What should I bring on a yacht charter?

With plenty of sunny days and mild Med. climate, Croatia is among sunniest European destinations. Summertime on Adriatic is simply glorious. Sun-soaked Dalmatian islands are literally bathing in sunbeams, while the air is dry and the sea warm. If your sailing trip is in summer season, simply bring your summer wardrobe.

Charter a Skippered Yacht for a Carefree Sailing Holiday in Croatia!

Cruising the Adriatic is a dream vacation, cutting the waves on your way from one amazing island to another. One day you're enjoying the privacy of a luxury yacht in a secluded bay, then on the next day, you're strolling down the promenade of a busy town on the Croatian coastline. Truly a dream. There is just one problem – you don't know how to sail a yacht. The solution is hiring a skipper for your sailing holiday!

How does a skippered yacht charter work?

If you've opted for hiring a private yacht charter with a skipper during your sailing vacation in Croatia, your skipper will join you on embarkation. He'll be by your side for your entire charter and in that time he'll take care of the safety of the passengers and that the yacht is returned to the base undamaged, while you enjoy your vacation. The skipper will advise you on the best islands to visit, handle the mooring and anchoring of the boat, and even help you learn about sailing.

Who is a professional skipper?

In the most simple terms, a professional skipper is a person who has the skill and experience as well as all the necessary official qualifications to sail a yacht. Additionally, he takes care of the boat, the people on the boat and all other details that are important for safe and smooth sailing.

What is a skippered yacht charter?

In a nutshell, a skippered charter is a boat rental where you reserve a boat and organise for a professional skipper to captain it for you. Having a skipper to sail the yacht is perfect for those with no sailing experience, or those who are not yet confident in sailing on their own.

Reasons to go for Skippered Yacht Charter in Croatia

A yacht charter with a skipper is the best choice not only for sailing beginners but for everyone who just wants to spend their sailing holiday on a relaxing cruise and spend time with their families. Another case in which experienced sailors might want to hire a skipper is if they don't have the necessary qualifications or licenses. For example, in Croatia, it is required to have a valid sailing license to charter in Croatia . Also, a yacht charter with a professional skipper is great for those with sailing experience, but no knowledge of sailing areas in Croatia they want to explore.

Skippers are experienced sailors

In most cases, skippers are people whose love for the sea stretches back to their childhood and the first steps in the world of sailing started in local sailing clubs or with their families. A professional skipper will ensure that your sailing holiday goes safely, should any emergency happen he knows how to react and take all the precautionary steps.

Skippered Yacht Charter Croatia Yachting

Sailing the Croatian coast for years, your skipper has first-hand experience and knowledge of all the factors that have an impact on sailing, such as the currents, tide motions and winds. Thanks to that, if any of the weather conditions begin to seem unfavourable, he will be able to make adjustments to your sailing route and advise where to go. By doing so, the skipper takes care not only of your safety but also of your holiday as he'll make sure that your sailing experience is precisely what you want and need, even if the plan needs to be changed.

Skippers can teach you new sailing skills

This can be a great opportunity for yachting enthusiasts to pick up some skills from your skipper. He will be more than happy to share his knowledge with another enthusiast. Just ask him, aspiring sailors are always welcome. This is the best school you'll ever be able to attend, with first-hand experience and sailing tips and tricks that come with years of sailing, all while you sail Croatia and explore the mesmerising Adriatic Sea. You'll get hooked on sailing in no time!

Skippers know the best sailing destinations

As we said before, skippers have sailed the Adriatic Sea for years and they have the local knowledge of the best places to visit. Your skipper will advise on the best destinations to visit regarding your preferences. Whether you want to enjoy the privacy of secluded coves, visit the best islands for snorkelling and diving on pristine beaches, or enjoy   traditional Croatian cuisine on the Dalmatian coast. If lively nightlife is your thing or maybe you want to island hop to different ancient cities every day, the skipper will know where to go! The skipper also knows all the best mooring places, marinas and anchorages and of course, it goes without saying – he is very familiar with Croatia and the Adriatic Sea. All you have to do is kick back and have the time of your life.

Frequently Asked Questions about Skippered Yacht Charter

Does the skipper speak english or any other language.

All skippers who work with Croatia Yachting speak Croatian and are fluent in English . If you or your party are not comfortable with English, we also have a crew fluent in other languages.

Tip: The multilingual crew get booked first, so you should book ASAP.

Can we make specific requests regarding the skipper?

Absolutely and we will do everything we can to make this happen . If you have special requests like – “Age (younger/older), good with kids, non-smoker, knows good party spots…” Whatever it may be, just let us know; the more information we have, the better we can match the perfect skipper for you.

Do you assign a skipper or do we get to choose?

Our standard procedure is that we gather as much information about you and your party as possible (i.e. preferences, yacht, itinerary), then we send you 2 – 3 CVs, and you choose your captain.

Will I have privacy during our yacht charter?

If you're worried about your privacy while having a skipper on board, it's important to know that the skipper will adjust according to your preferences . We are asked this question many ways – “ What if we don’t want the skipper to always be with us” or “ We value our privacy”. Alternatively, we also hear – “ We would like the skipper to be actively involved in our holiday”. The easy answer is – both are possible. If you want to spend your time in the company of your friends and family, the skipper will respect your wishes and stay out of your way. However, if you want more interaction and conversation, he'll be up for it. Communicate openly with your skipper throughout the week, and we trust you will find a perfect rhythm with your skipper.

Where does the skipper sleep on a boat?

Skippers must have their own accommodation on the boat. If you plan to charter a yacht with a skipper (and/or hostess), it is best to charter a yacht which already has separate crew cabins.

If crew accommodation is not planned in the layout, then it is customary to leave one cabin for the skipper/hostess. Sometimes skippers sleep in the saloon but this is not something we advise as the crew needs time to rest so they can give you their best.

How much does a skipper cost?

Typically, crew fees depend on the level of their experience and the size of the yacht. However, to help you budget , the cost of a skipper in Croatia is usually between 150 – 250 EUR per day.

This fee does not include meals for the crew; your crew can either join you for meals or you can allow 30 EUR per crew member, per day. Also, note that this fee does not include gratuity.

Should we tip our skipper in Croatia?

We recommend you keep tipping in mind while you're planning your holiday budget. Although tipping is not mandatory in Croatia, a tip of 10%-20% of the charter price is customary , especially if you're satisfied with the skipper's service.

Welcome aboard

Yacht Delphinus image

Yacht Delphinus is a beautiful, privately owned 50 foot blue water sailing yacht designed by the highly regarded and successful designer of racing and cruising yachts, Bruce Farr.

The majority of yachts  this size  offered for charter are configured with up to 5 cabins to accommodate 10 persons on board.  Some are even advertised to accommodate as many as 12 persons with two being required to sleep in the saloon!

Welcome to Delphinus Yachting

Stress free and flexibility

Stress free and flexibility

The itinerary for your cruise onboard Yacht Delphinus is flexible to suit how you like to spend your time on holiday and to maximise your enjoyment. It can be tailored to the number of actual sailing miles you wish to log each day, time spent sightseeing, swimming in the warm crystal clear water, learning the ropes, brushing up on RYA navigation theory, honing your boat handling skills and mooring techniques or just lazy days afloat reading a book on deck whilst soaking up the sun with a cold drink in hand as we hop between the stunning Islands and Dalmatian coastline. As always however, weather conditions can sometimes dictate the day. Here is a sample itinerary for guests arriving early or mid morning.

Arrival

Meet and greet at the airport. A short drive to Cavtat for a leg stretch around this picturesque harbour followed by a curtesy drive up to the top of Mount Srd to take in the spectacular view of Dubrovnik 'Old Town' and lunch, or just a drink (not included in the charter fee), in the cliff top 'Panorama Restaurant'. (www.nautikarestaurants.com/panorama-restaurant-bar/) Or perhaps you would prefer to head straight back to Delphinus just a 30 minute drive from the airport to relax onboard after an early start to your day. Either way, complimentary welcome drinks and snacks will be available whilst you familiarise yourself with Yacht Delphinus and we run through the 'obligatory' safety briefing. For guests keen to 'Get Going ASAP', we can slip lines and sail off to a nearby Island to anchor offshore or pick up one of the taverna mooring buoys for the evening. Those wishing to catch their breath may prefer to just chill out onboard Delphinus on her private mooring whilst enjoying complimentary drinks for the afternoon. Take a wander down to one of the local restaurants for supper or head into Dubrovnik Old Town for a 'must do' site seeing visit of this stunning UNESCO World Heritage site.

Lokrum and Sipan

Lokrum and Sipan

A short sail round to Dubrovnik Old Town to get your sea legs and take in the view of this breath taking fortification from seaward. Anchor for lunch off the nearby island of Lokrum. Swim or tender ashore to explore this charming little Island. Afternoon sail to the Island of Sipan. Anchor and take the tender ashore for supper or perhaps enjoy the Skippers' BBQ onboard.

Ston and Mljet

Ston and Mljet

Sail to the little town of Ston on the Peljesac peninsular, famous for its salt pans and oyster farms, sight see the town and 'walk the wall' for those feeling energetic. The view from the top is worth the effort! Afternoon sail over to the island of Mljet to overnight in one of the many picturesque harbours.

Mljet

Sail up along the coast of Mljet to Polace or Pomena on its most Western tip. From there, take a taxi or hire electric bicycles to visit the beautiful national park and enjoy a lakeside picnic lunch. Perhaps the Skippers BBQ on board at anchor in the evening or moor up outside one of the local Tavernas for supper.

Korcula

Sail over to the Island of Korcula to experience the beautiful old walled town of Korcula itself, often referred to as 'Little Dubrovnik, and firmly believed by Croatians to be the birth place of Marco Polo.

Mljet

Sail back to the Island of Mljet and down its coastline to overnight in the beautiful harbour of Sobra or Okuklje as we make our way back to Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik

On our sail back to Dubrovnik, anchor for lunch in one of the numerous secluded bays on route and enjoy one last swim in the clear water before tying Delphinus back up on her home mooring. Late afternoon / early evening 'must do' site seeing visit of Dubrovnik Old Town if not already done so on day of arrival.

Hi Rob That was a holiday to remember - good weather, good sailing, great places to see, excellent food both on board and ashore. We all enjoyed it - the swimming, sailing and paddle boarding and the variety. Delphinus is a beautiful and very comfortable boat, generously sized for 4 passengers and one skipper, deceptively fast in a light wind, and very capable of battling against the wind with the motor, if needed. Most of all we benefitted from your deep knowledge of the area - the attractive little bay, an ideal stop for a swim and lunch; thank goodness for an electric anchor winch! And your guidance to the best local restaurant. We did not just enjoy the magnificent scenery at sea level, but explored several historic sites and cities which meant walking up and down steep paths and ancient steps getting a taste of the lives of the population over the centuries. You looked after us very well with good food, and - just as important - good drinks, both wines, spirits and fruit juice. Thank you very much.   Chris & Liz Wooddwalker:  October 2022
Rob is a relaxed and engaging host, quietly very competent and in full command of a well appointed and plentifully stocked boat. Our mixed ability crew was tested appropriately, with new skills absorbed. The runs out of Dubrovnik are beautiful, Rob's knowledge of the locale found us in plenty of picturesque moorings, and provided us with advice on extra activities such as walks, electric bike rides and swimming spots, during our mid October week. Highly recommended.   Vernon Antcliff:  October 2022
We had an absolutely brilliant time onboard the beautiful Delphinus with Rob. He arranged absolutely everything for us, from tranquil lunch spots in secluded bays to dinner in stunning waterside restaurants. He really did take all the stress out of planning a trip and his local knowledge and contacts made it such a great experience. We had some of the best seafood we've ever eaten at the restaurants that Rob recommended and booked for us! The boat is stylish, comfortable and Robs super friendly demeanour meant we felt relaxed the minute we stepped on board. The islands and beaches he took us to were truly stunning..having travelled extensively across Europe and beyond this was without doubt one of the best trips we've ever had...we'll absolutely be back to explore more of beautiful Croatia with skipper Rob.   Leanne & Gavin Goodwin:  July 2022
We have just returned from a wonderful holiday with friends on board Delphinus. Never having done a sailing holiday before, we weren’t sure what to expect but the Delphinus is beautiful and Rob is such a skilled yachtsman and the most marvellous host, it was perfect! Lunches on board moored alongside the Croatian coastline in the sun were memorable! He was full of information about the area and we even picked up a bit of sailing terminology! Definitely an experience to be repeated!   Graham & Jan Shaw:  September 2022
"We chartered Delphinus for the second year running and once again Rob's professionalism, hard work and attention to detail was absolutely outstanding. We have in the past bare-boated but realistically you lose one day either side of your holiday when bare-boating due to handover times and having to arrange all your own victualling. Rob takes care of all that prior to your arrival saving at least a day of your holiday and it’s all included in the price! Rob is happy to sail Delphinus alone to let you sit back and relax or to let you get on with it yourselves and quietly be in the background ever ready to draw on his vast experience to calmly provide support if needed. Delphinus is an excellent, stable, beautifully appointed and maintained yacht of an entirely different class to the majority of 'plastic fantastic Ikea built' charter yachts we have encountered and she provided a real sense of stability to the non sailors in the party. All in all we had an excellent time again and I would have no hesitation in recommending Delphinus as your charter yacht choice in Croatia!"   Collin & Helen Gibson:  June 2022
Our time on Delphinus yacht with Rob can be summed up as life-changing. Rob is nothing short of incredible, it is amazing that he is able to do it all and then some! Rob’s demeanor can be described as a calming presence always ready for fun and adventure. At any given time, Rob was willing to show Julia and I the ropes regarding sailing and mooring. We were able to explore Croatia in a way that only a native knows, finding secluded bays and good friends. To say this would be a once in a lifetime trip would be wrong, Rob has found life long customers in Julia and I.   Julia & Sean Kennidy:  July 2022
Thanks very much for looking after us so well, we all had a great time. For me the highlight was to have a great sail without the responsibility of having to skipper the boat. I know everyone had tremendous confidence in your ability as a skipper which enabled us to sail on some pretty windy days knowing we were in your very capable hands. And your excellent lunches and the barbecue were probably better than the food we had onshore - well done! Your "complete package" including transfers, food, drinks, mooring fees etc was a step up from the flotilla sailing we have done on previous occasions, much appreciated.   Richard & Denis Belton:  September 2022
Thanks Rob, for a rather special week cruising the Croatian coast from Dubrovnik. Delphinus is a lovely boat. I had no idea that two people could so easily sail a 50 footer – and I do not want to go on a big yacht again that does not have an electric winch ! As you came to quickly realise, Chris does not “do” sailing, but your calm and ultra competent approach meant that she felt safe and comfortable with just you and I doing the handling. A special thanks for all the lovely food, and for including collection to and from the airport, which was a wonderful touch. The supplementary informal theory advice was very welcome too.   Tony & Chris Lewis
For anyone who has never sailed, I can think of no better introduction than a week aboard Delphinus - you'll love it. For those that can sail but have yet to explore Southern Dalmatia - you'll love it.   Mike Hobin
Dear Rob, Thank you for an amazing holiday aboard Delphinus, we had such a varied, interesting and relaxed week sailing with you, every day just kept getting better! Matt especially loved crewing and helming in 20knots of wind, Ellie enjoyed the magical anchorage in quiet hidden coves and in contrast, her paddle board water ski - I never thought that was possible! I loved the early morning paddle boarding followed by one of many Chef Specials - Burcher Muesli. Delphinus is a boat with quarter and charm, loved and well cared for by Rob. We immediately felt welcomed and at home and appreciated Rob's calm and experienced helming. Totally flexible to our requests, willing to teach and involve us in sailing as much as we wanted but also happy for us to sit back and be crewed. If you want a holiday with variety, stunning landscapes, interesting towns, quiet coves and great food, I recommend Delphinus Yachting.   Anna Hardy
I would just like to thank you formally for the fabulous week my wife and I had on you beautiful yacht. To personally collect us from the airport was a nice touch. The boat has been fitted out really well and accommodated us in style. Your knowledge of the area, willingness to share your passion for the skills of navigation and boatmanship were very much appreciated. You took us to some very interesting places around the Dalmatian Isles. Korčula was a favourite and that seafood meal we had at the beautiful Bota Sare in Mali Ston was very special. Nice touch that not only did we drink the owner’s own wine but that he then drove us back to the boat! You seem to have thought of everything, including the weather. We hope to see you again next year, if not before.   Paul & Mora Whitelock
Thanks again for a great course a couple of weeks ago. Your instructing and hosting were both first class!   Martin Newman
I wish to say how great Rob is as an instructor. He has a wonderfully calm manner and is great fun. He has a real depth of knowledge and we were able to have really good conversations about different methods to approach a situation. He is an instructor who coaxes the best out of people, such that we stand a better chance of remembering the techniques he teaches.   Ian Watson
... a big thank you for last weekend. Your calm, professional expert tuition was greatly appreciated. Plus you always went the extra mile from night sails, to sail reefing to ensuring we understood some of the finer points you were showing us.   Dan Hatfield
I have to say big thanks to Rob whose expertise as well as experience shared with me will put my future sailing to a whole new level.   Djoka Janjusevic
Probably one of the best experiences of my life. Rob our super Skipper was an amazing teacher and made the entire experience fun and educational. We had such a brilliant time. We felt incredibly safe. Laughed a great deal and also learnt so much! I'm hooked! Thank you   Jacqueline Paul
Fabulous time, learned Loads and Really sound people. Rob was very reactive to exactly what we wanted to learn and gave everyone a go - at the same time as remaining amazingly calm! Cannot recommend more highly.   Sue McGuffie
The Instructor was outstanding- helpful, practical with excellent communication skills, unflappable, approachable and social. Course was extremely well run with excellent range of visual aids, handouts and demo’s. A great week!   Colin Gibson
I must give you credit for the way you operate both as a skipper and a tutor and the immeasurable patience you demonstrate. I shall always look forward to a sail with you.   Robbie Matthews
Thanks for the great time we have had, and I have really enjoyed it and really appreciated your efforts! I really liked your teaching style and maybe I am not an expert in yachting lessons, but I have been professionally instructing kiteboarding, as well as advising, evaluating and training many instructors and as a manager dealing with other water related sports instructors and could place you among the top!   Alex Kowalik
I’m just writing to thank you for the amazing couple of days you gave us the week before last. My confidence in skippering Piper has soared and I am totally gobsmacked as to what you achieved with Ros. For someone who was frankly very nervous even about going out on the boat she is now enthusiastically talking about sailing and blocking out weekends on our calendar for going down to Shotley. This is entirely down to you making her feel comfortable in what to her was a totally alien environment and giving her the confidence, knowledge, tools and techniques to feel she was part of the boat.   Stuart Robinson
A big thank you for a fantastic course. As a novice, I really welcomed Rob’s approach. He instals confidence in you and pushes you on. Haven’t learnt so much or been so relaxed in ages!   Christine McGuire
Thank you for being such a good teacher. You have saved my life re three point turns.   Mark Matthews
Excellent instructor. Learned how to do things in a way my brain likes to learn!   Cindy Schofield
I had a great time with good company and first class instruction from Rob really made it an enjoyable learning experience, I learnt a lot and now much more confident when sailing.   Alan Breakwell
Having been on sail training courses before I was a little apprehensive because, in my view, the quality of instructors varies greatly. I needn’t have worried because not only is Rob a great instructor from a technical perspective he has exceptional interpersonal skills that enable him to juggle three students with vastly different backgrounds and learning objectives into a coherent, motivated and good-humoured team.   Bob Stamp
Huge praises to our Instructor Rob who’s energy and enthusiasm made the course informative and thoroughly enjoyable. He also has the patience and ability to communicate with all levels on board and through ingenious self-made props and sketches can demonstrate and explain even the unexplainable!!! Rob’s catering is not bad either!   Mike Horn
From the moment Rob collected us from the airport to the complimentary return transfer we were treated to five star service all the way. Having been used to bareboat charter and syndicate sailing the benefits of having everything organised, provisioned and preloaded onto the boat cannot be overestimated to provide for that immediate holiday feeling! Delphinus is a spacious and comfortable yacht and is large enough for it to never feel crowded. She sails beautifully and is very well equipped. The itinerary was flexible and varied between quayside and anchorage moorings in stunningly beautiful locations. Rob was there to assist and calmly advise when needed but allowed experienced sailors to get involved or to relax as desired. The overall package is great value and of extremely high quality. Overall we had a fabulous time, in a beautiful country on a stunning yacht with a relaxed, capable and personable host which we would 100% recommend - in fact we’ve already booked for next year!   Colin & Helen Gibson
Thank you Rob for a superb week on your beautiful yacht. We had a lovely week of weather for swimming and seeing the coast, even though the winds were either too strong, too weak or in the wrong direction some of the time. However, the sailing was great when the wind was favourable. Excellent lunches in wonderful bays, swimming and attempting to paddle board (not very successfully) were great fun. The overnight moorings were in very picturesque surroundings adjoining or near to restaurants with superb fresh fish and local produce. Your barbecue on one evening was great. The on-board catering was magnificent and you always seemed to anticipate when beer and wine were needed! Your refresher on knots was very helpful. Your company was very welcome but at the same time, you often kept a low profile allowing us to feel that there were only the four of us on board. Once again, many thanks for a first-class week, we all loved it. Nicky and Terry , Corrie and Clive.

Almost all navigators sailing on yacht charter in Croatia have certainly come across the idea to hire a yacht with a skipper. Most of us probably had similar initial navigation experiences.

On bareboat yacht charter we made up a crew including someone with more or less sailing experience and we set out to the sea. Perhaps we had some theoretical knowledge, but we lacked practical skill.

On most of our first sailings we had to cope with torn sails, our limbs full of bruises, entangled ropes and similar problems. Even later on, the crews sailing a week or two per year, face some difficulties in the first days, taking into account that over the years they hire different vessels which they do not have the opportunity to get used to.

Skippered yacht charters and sailing holidays in Croatia

Boat charter with a professional skipper is definitely an advantage for an inexperienced crew. As a rule, most nautical beginners predominantly have theoretical knowledge gained in the courses for obtaining a sailing licence. A week or two of navigation under skipper's instructions will help to get some good knowledge of the navigation technique and optimum exploitation for your next sailboat rental, catamaran charter or motor yacht charter experience. You can also yacht charter Croatia with crew for this purpose.

In subsequent years, such a crew will be able to sail alone without undue worries. Even more skilled skippers and crews may undergo a few days long training course of regatta sailing under the guidance of a skipper in order learn how to exploit the capabilities of vessels as well as possible.

NCP & mare can provide charter sailing boats for sporting sailing and it is also possible to attend an international sailing course organized by RYA (Royal Yachting Association). For more guidance about which boat to choose, for your next boat trip in Croatia, based on your preference and needs, read our article on how to choose the right boat for your next yacht charter holidays .

Croatia yacht charter with skipper for a safer experience

Safety while sailing the Croatian coast should certainly be a priority. Every navigator must follow the weather forecast while experienced skippers can assess the threat of an approaching storm or other major changes of weather according to the situation in the air.

Due to the weather conditions, the Adriatic Sea can be very insidious and is considered to be a dangerous sea. As part of the Mediterranean Sea, it is full of bays and creeks, surrounded by bulks of land. That's why storms can develop faster and more unpredictably than in the oceans. Summers, however, offer longer periods of nice weather but when the weather changes, the storms are so much more severe.

In view of good sailing tour in Croatia we also need to know the wind conditions in the Adriatic.

In summer, most winds are weak, except the good sailing winds in the area of outer islands. In particular the maestral can become fairly strong in the open. It is a sign of good weather and if it does not blow it may predict the worsening of the weather.

The sirocco is less common in summer and it usually decreases to no more than 7 Beauforts.

The bora wind is very dangerous because it often strikes like a bolt from the blue, with no signs, in good weather and at high air pressure. Skilled skippers know very well that even on the lee side of the islands, the higher ones, the situation is extremely dangerous because the winds rise and become even stronger, unlike the lower islands. Therefore, a seasoned skipper takes care of firm anchoring and/or an adequate mooring. Sailing in the bora wind on the lee side of the islands and of the coast is also rather demanding despite lower waves because the gusts of the wind may tear the sails.

It is useful to know all such things. Nowadays, in the Internet Age, it is fortunately very easy to follow detailed weather forecasts for navigators, such as published at meteo.hr or at windfinder.com . These forecasts are fairly reliable for at least 24 hours, but also for up to 3 days.

Depending on the weather forecast and with the help of a skipper on a yacht you will find an ideal sailing route for amusing yacht tour as well as peaceful bays for swimming and overnight stays.

Usually, the holiday crew is made up of friends or family members. Often only one person is more or less experienced and capable to operate the vessel. However, it is essential for safe operation of a vessel that there are at least two experienced persons on board. It turns out particularly important in the event of more difficult weather conditions. It is invaluable to have on board a reliable person that can secure safety and is able to take appropriate measures in any situation.

When taking your family on Croatia yacht trip you wish everybody to relax and to enjoy. A skipper can secure your safety in any weather conditions, he will take care of the boat while you are diving, swimming, playing with children or going on a trip to the mainland. He can help you build an ideal itinerary for your unforgettable vacation. During your voyage he will find for you the most beautiful bays where you will enjoy bathing and other marine delights.

Twin skippered sailing holidays for more fun

Moreover, NCP & mare provides a special facility, twin sailing, where you can charter two identical sailboats from our fleet at the same time and get a discount.

This is ideal for a larger group of sailors or for two families, as they can travel together and nevertheless preserve their privacy on their own vessels. In this case, too, it is very useful to hire the vessel with a skipper.

With twin sailing you can hire only one skipper for one vessel and the other vessel will join it on its voyage. In this way you can spend a part of the day focusing on the improvement of your sailing skills, if you wish, but you can also just indulge in the pleasure of sailing Croatia and discovering new destinations, being aware that you are accompanied by an experienced expert.

If your route includes the most crowded Adriatic destinations, such as Hvar or Vis , the skipper may book the berths in advance or he may just wait on the boat while you visit a crowded market in Hvar or Komiža and buy fresh vegetables, locally produced fruits, fresh bread and have a cup of coffee in the local coffee shop.

Then you can again head for some nice bay away from the tourist crowds.

You may have heard from your friends that they enjoyed their vacation on the sea and you want to try it yourself. A chartered vessel with a friendly skipper or full crew is an ideal opportunity to get to know the coast from the sea side, to spend your holidays in different locations without having to constantly fill and empty your luggage.

You rent a sailing boat or hire a yacht with a skipper and you can indulge in new adventures. You can choose a trip from one bay to another and enjoy the crystal-clear sea of the Adriatic islands . Alternatively, you can cruise Croatia from one place to another in order to visit the architectural pearls of the Adriatic towns , the museums, including culinary experiences in best restaurants on Adriatic , all at your own pace and without any obligation. If you like the place you visit, you can stay there for several days without being under the pressure of the schedule. And do not forget to visit about Croatian national parks , near our marina in Šibenik .

You can also travel to the farthest Adriatic islands, like Lastovo , and get to know their history since the ancient times.

Privacy aboard when renting a yacht with skipper in Croatia

Concerns can arise regarding the privacy on board, as the skipper is a member of the crew, but nevertheless a foreigner.

Anyway, guests should take into account that one cabin will be needed for the skipper himself, also in order to be able to withdraw and to make the guests feel more relaxed.

In any case, the hiring of a vessel with a skipper has its positive and also some negative sides, depending on the guests' expectations, their navigation & sailing skills and their knowledge of the coast and islands of the Adriatic Sea.

Our company NCP & mare offers several possibilities for sailing boats and motor yachts for rent with a skipper. Most of the skippers are also our sailors whom our guests get to know at the quay when taking over the boats. It means that they know in detail our big and small private yachts where they work as skippers.

Their advantage is not only in their knowledge of the behavior of the vessel at sea, but they also know how to eliminate potential defects that may occur during the voyage. They know well the aquatorium, they book either berths in the city ports or in front of the restaurants and they are discreet during the voyage.

In case our skippers are busy we have at our disposal a set of other tried skippers who earn their money accordingly throughout the season.

Price considerations of yacht charter Croatia with skipper

Yacht charter Croatia with crew or a skipper is, however, more expensive than bareboat yacht charter. Yet it is important that the skipper is provided with due insurance of the vessel.

A guest who himself takes the place of the skipper must conclude a special insurance for possible damage that is not covered by the marine hull insurance of vessels.

The skipper will provide for daily cleaning and readiness of the vessel for navigation. With the help of the local skipper guests may even get to know local customs, communicate with the locals and thus enrich their holidays.

Last but not least, a skipper, if guests take him with them to the restaurant, usually makes sure that they get fresh fish and good wine for reasonable prices.

In winter our skippers often tell stories and remember nice experiences that they shared with guests on the boat. As a rule they look forward to the new season and new adventures.

What exactly is meant by the term “skippered yacht charter”?

In Croatia, a skippered yacht charter is a type of yacht charter that includes the services of a professional skipper for the entirety of your sailing vacation. Because of this, you and your friends will be able to relax and enjoy your trip without having to worry about determining where to sail or where to moor the boat. It also makes it possible for people with very little or no prior sailing expertise to participate in yacht charters.

There is a widespread belief that a skippered yacht charter in Croatia would run significantly more than a bareboat charter, but this does not have to be the case at all. You may be surprised to learn that the cost of a skippered yacht charter in Croatia is lower than you anticipated, and one of our sales experts can provide you with a price in almost no time at all.

Why Should I Charter a Skippered Yacht in Croatia Instead of Sailing on My Own?

If this will be your first time sailing in Croatia, you might consider booking a skippered boat charter in the country. Croatia is a fantastic place to go sailing. Although Croatia is a wonderful spot to sail, access to marinas is restricted in the country. In addition, some of the marinas are rather difficult to maneuver due to their tiny size, thus hiring an experienced skipper may be beneficial.

Whether or not you would profit from going on a skippered yacht charter in Croatia is determined by the level of sailing experience that you and your crew possess.

With a plethora of islands, one-of-a-kind coastal villages, and a rich historical legacy, Croatia is a magnificent country that ranks among our most frequently chartered sailing destinations.

Yacht Charter Options: Skippered vs. Bareboat

The primary distinction between skippered yacht charters and bareboat charters is that during a bareboat charter, you and your crew are responsible for navigating, anchoring, mooring, sailing, and organizing your itinerary and stops. There are many other differences between the two types of charters as well. During a skippered yacht charter, the skipper is responsible for sailing the boat, navigating, dropping anchor, finding places to moor, providing professional instruction, and offering recommendations on the top destinations to see.

In order to sail in Croatia on a bareboat hire, either you or a member of your crew must possess the appropriate sailing certifications. There is no requirement for you or any other members of your crew to have any prior sailing experience or certifications in order to embark on a skippered yacht charter in Croatia.

Croatia Yacht Charter With Skipper

There are many reasons for getting a Croatia yacht charter with skipper . Way too often, sailing beginners think of skipping a boat on a sailing holiday themselves, seeking to acquire experience and information feverishly and then waiting until they think they have enough.

But there is a much better idea given the non-breathable properties of water! If you’re a professional sailor or new to sailing holidays, hiring a skipper for your next sailing holiday has many benefits.

The advantages of taking a Croatia yacht charter with skipper over a regular bareboat sailing vacation are pretty much endless. The biggest advantage is the total freedom that sailing with skipper offers. If bareboat yacht cruising is what you plan to do, then go ahead, but if you prefer to spend more time on activities then a private skippered yacht charter is a more viable option.

  • A skipper is acquainted with your destination for a charter. Based on your wishes, he/she will know the best places to go, so you can certainly count on his/her local knowledge.
  • It allows you time to relax and enjoy the company of your friends and family as opposed to always running the boat or always being at the helm. Learn sailing, at your own rate, if you like. Your skipper will be a helpful mentor if you want to take the helm or assist with moorings or running equipment, or if you are doing well, they will know when to get out of the way.
  • To ensure that you have a nice time on your holiday, a skipper is educated. They can vanish at will, or they can tell old stories right there.

We come across this client conundrum as charter agents all the time: “Do I hire a skipper or not?”

If this is your first time chartering a sailing holiday and if you are challenging your knowledge the answer is straightforward.

But what if you’ve got some knowledge of sailing? Based on input from charter companies and accident review, SkipperCity set a simple threshold to follow:

You should have at least 50 days of practice in your history of sailing.

  • At least 50% of the days must be as the ship’s captain.
  • Any of the 50 days is expected to be 20 feet (6.1m) or longer on ship.
  • A vessel must be 28 ft (8.4m) or longer for at least 50 percent of its experience.

If you are this skilled, it is contrary to expert recommendations to charter without a skipper. Too many variables remain. Stuff arises and your inexperience puts your family and friends’ safety at risk.

  • Prop shafts slip from the stuffing box that floods the engine room and boat.
  • When not expected, winds do ascend to gail power
  • A smidge that places you on a reef will disable navigation.
  • There are also mechanical harts out by 100 meters
  • In the night, mooring ball cables break, placing you on the rocks at night with a swell.
  • Chainplates rip off, creating a dismasting process
  • Rudders are coming off or being stuck
  • Keels dropped off and caused an instant capsize
  • With massive breaking waves from a lateral surge, harbor entrances are always complicated
  • In the night, winds move and anchors will drag and release
  • The boat unintentionally gybes and wakes a family member on the head, inadvertently launching them overboard
  • Members of the crew fell overboard at sea
  • An override on the furling headsail drum stops you from furling the headsail when it gets dark and approaches a small harbor
  • You can have fire on the boat

All this stuff has happened to charterers. And even though you are eligible by the hair on your chinny-chin-chin by the charter corporation, the cost and duty of liability is just too high.

Frequently asked questions:

  • Is it going to be weird for a week to have an outsider on board? No!! Many skippers are nice people who just want you to have a memorable sailing holiday. They will know when to communicate with you and your guest, and how to interact.
  • Where’s the Captain going to sleep? Many charter companies allow a captain to sleep in a forepeak; others need an interior cabin for a captain. In any case, plan for a cabin for your skipper.
  • What/how is the skipper going to eat? Generally, when you provide, prepare, and eat on the boat, you treat the skipper as any charter guest, including him/her. Your skipper will help himself on board, or you will treat the skipper to dinner with you if you wish to eat ashore. Do not expect the skipper to pay for his own meal.
  • Who’s determining the itinerary? You are. It is your charter; your guide is the skipper. Although a skipper is likely to make an itinerary dependent on local information, you are responsible for the final decision on where to go. But make sure you listen to your skipper if he/she is telling you that the weather is bad.
  • How much would it cost to hire a captain? Depending on location, skippers range from $ 175-$ 200 / day. Tipping – you usually tip 10-15% of their charge to the skipper. If you are a large group of friends you can all tip 100 EUR per person in your group.
  • If I have any skills, can I also have a skipper? Absolutely! See all the advantages above.

If you plan for a bareboat yacht charter in Croatia , as long as you possess sailing skills of some level you will be fine. Croatia is well placed geographically to allow for easy access to the islands which make up the Adriatic. If you do not have sailing experience, however, there are plenty of options available.

Croatia is also home to professional and experienced sailing companies that can provide you with charter services. Alternatively, you could take your own skipper – just make sure he is capable of steering your vessel.

As the primary reason for anyone not wanting to travel by private yacht, the cost is always a consideration. However, don’t let this put you off.

Most people are attracted to the opportunity to skipper a catamaran charter or a Croatia yacht charter because these charters allow for great flexibility. You are free to set your own timetable, leaving you time to relax whilst sailing around the Adriatic.

There’s no need to worry about packing your clothes or luggage when taking a yacht holiday – most yachts have spacious staterooms that are furnished with a comfortable bed, private toilet, and shower. Many even come equipped with a TV so that you can relax in comfort.

Another advantage of taking a Croatia yacht charter with skipper or a catamaran charter with skipper in Croatia is that the skipper has an in-depth knowledge of the region’s weather conditions and wind conditions. He will know what conditions to expect on your sailing trip and how to prepare his crew and boat for these conditions.

If there is bad weather, then the skipper can make quick decisions about changing course or increasing the speed of the vessel in order to avoid incurring too much wind damage. OR even suggest that sailing a certain day is not recommended.

Similarly, he will know the best way to position the boat in relation to the prevailing wind . This means that he can sail the yacht either directly into the wind or to the left or right depending on the weather conditions.

Skippered Yacht charter in Croatia program is designed for group sailing with family or friends who wish to go sailing for a holiday but don’t have the experience for managing the boat or the sailing area. A yacht charter with a skipper is a great choice as you can enjoy sailing. There is plenty of reasons to enjoy yourselves. You will be able to share the fun of sailing the Croatia Sea with your friends and family.

Croatia is a good destination for sailing. There are plenty of boats available including catamarans, sailboats, and powerboats, so you can be assured of finding a suitable yacht for your group. Just like any other charter, a Croatia yacht charter with skipper will be in high demand, so it is recommended that you book early.

Tip: Make sure that you tell us the number of people sailing so that he can offer the right boat for your group and prepare equipment properly. Also, remember to inform us about the destination you would like to reach.
