Inside the 240-Foot Bad-Boy Superyacht That Stars in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’

Superyacht Planet 9 Stars in Chriistopher Nolan Blockbuster

With a production budget reportedly in excess of $200 million, Nolan didn’t hold back when it came to picking the coolest “props” for his sci-fi thriller. The coolest of them all? Without doubt, the spectacular 240-foot superyacht Planet Nine , which doubled as the lair of Tenet’s Russian baddie, Andrei Sator, played so despicably well by Kenneth Branagh.

Built by the Italian yard Admiral Yachts in 2018, the world-girding, high-luxury ice-breaker is currently on the market through Fraser Yachts for a jaw-dropping $100 million. She’s also available for charter at up to $850,000 a week. Plus expenses, of course.

Superyacht Planet 9 Stars in Chriistopher Nolan Blockbuster Tenet

The 240-foot Admiral superyacht and the stylish 33-fooot Riva Aquariva not only gave the movie a backdrop but plenty of waterborne action.  Warner Bros.

The yacht scenes take place with Planet Nine anchored off Ravello on the azure-blue waters of Italy’s picturesque Amalfi Coast. Describing Planet Nine in the in-depth Tenet production notes supplied to Robb Report by Warner Bros. Pictures, Branagh says: “So this boat—its military nature, its color, its angularity—takes you inside the mind of Andrei Sator, projecting an image that is sinister and threatening,”

Yet Nathan Crowley, the movie’s production designer, felt the yacht’s rugged lines weren’t quite sinister enough: “We added a rocket launcher on the back to feed into that semi-military look that says ‘Don’t come near this yacht.’”

Working with a $100 million superyacht—its owner is said to be billionaire Nathaniel Rothschild, 49, of the Rothschild banking family—also posed a few serious headaches for Crowley and his team. “When you rent a giant superyacht, you try not to do any damage. So when the crew came onboard carrying all that equipment, it was important that anything that could get chipped was protected,” Crowley said.

Sailing Catamarans Star in Chriistopher Nolan Blockbuster Tenet

The 50-foot sailing cat in the movie was so fast that the director had to use a helicopter to shoot the racing sequences. One of the actors called the ride “exhilarating but quite terrifying.”  Warner Bros.

In fact, four members of the film crew were assigned to do nothing but safeguard the yacht from any dings and dents. And when interior furniture had to be moved around, the job was assigned to Planet Nine ‘s crew.

One other headache for Crowley turned out to be the yacht’s helipad. While its 10-ton capacity was enough to support the boat’s current chopper, an MD Explorer 902, it wasn’t enough to withstand the huge weight of Sator’s Russian-made Mil mi-8 twin-turbine helicopter.

“We had to figure out how to complete the helicopter sequence without it actually touching down,” says executive producer Thomas Hayslip. “Thankfully we were able to find a great crew out of Eastern Europe that does search and rescue. They brought the helicopter in and just barely hovered, so it looks like the wheels are on the yacht. They weren’t. It was basically the thickness of a piece of paper, they were that precise.”

The movie’s hero uses a sleek 33-foot Riva to approach the villain’s superyacht.  Warner Bros.

For boat lovers, there’s one scene guaranteed to set hearts racing. In it, lead character—who is simply called The Protagonist, and played by John David Washington—speeds out to Planet Nine behind the wheel of a gorgeous Riva 33 Aquariva Super launch to confront the villains.

But for arguably the film’s most breathtaking maritime action, Nolan and his crew moved to Southampton on England’s south coast. There, bad-guy Sator gets his on-screen kicks match-sailing his two, state-of-the-art F50 foiling catamarans. The cats are fast and furious. For the sailing scenes, Tenet’s marine coordinator Neil Andrea—he’s famous for pulling together the boats for Nolan’s WWII epic, Dunkirk —approached the UK-based SailGP team which oversees F50 racing. They provided the two catamarans and the skippers for filming.

One problem they faced? With top speeds of over 58 mph, the America’s Cup-style cats were way too fast for the camera boat to keep up. The film crew had to switch to a helicopter.

“Planet Nine” was designed to look like a rough-and-ready military vessel, but the movie’s producers assigned four crew to make sure that nothing was damaged during filming.  Fraser Yachts

Andrei Sator’s wife in the film, played by towering Australian actor Elizabeth Debicki, described her first time in the F50. “When three of us were hanging on the side and the boat lifted out of the water, I’ve never felt anything like it,” she said. “It was exhilarating, but quite terrifying.”

Out of this world superyacht stops by in Bermuda

nathaniel rothschild yacht

At $725,000 a week to rent (or $650,000 a week in the winter), this explorer yacht really is from a different planet.

The vessel, Planet Nine, moored in St George’s Harbour, is quite a sight and comes with, among other things, its own helipad.

The boat, built in Italy in 2018, is apparently owned by Nat Rothschild – a member of the Rothschild family, whose net worth is said to be $1 billion.

The 240ft-long vessel can accommodate 12 guests in 9 cabins and was designed by Tim Heywood to be “one of the world’s foremost explorer yachts”.

According to its builders , Admiral, the ship comes with a theatre room equipped with a 119in large screen.

The teak panelled Beach Club is designed for use in hot and cold climates and there is a spa which has a foldable bulwark which, when open, becomes a large sunbathing and lounging area on the sea.

Planet Nine superyacht stars at Brooklyn marina

Spectacular vessel featured in film 'tenet', november 15, 2021 mary frost.

nathaniel rothschild yacht

Visitors to the Brooklyn Heights waterfront have been snapping photos of an eye-popping superyacht docked at ONE°15 Brooklyn Marina in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The 240-foot motor vessel takes up almost the entire rear D Dock of the marina, with its top deck towering up to the Promenade’s height.

If this vessel looks familiar, it’s because it is the Planet Nine, featured in Christopher Nolan’s action film Tenet. In the film, Planet Nine served as the floating lair of supervillain Andrei Sator (played by Kenneth Branagh).

It’s easy to see why this boat was chosen for the film. With an almost military appearance, the angular, gray-hulled Planet Nine is an “expedition” yacht, meaning she can go to the most remote regions of the world, through the roughest seas, harshest weather and ice. She can travel 6,000 nautical miles (roughly the distance from New York City to the Democratic Republic of the Congo) without refueling.

Her top deck functions as a helicopter pad, complete with an MD 600 Explorer helicopter and a lift system that lowers the helicopter to a hangar below deck. She doesn’t actually have a rocket launcher installed, however — that was a touch added by the film’s producers.

The marina was mum on who owns Planet Nine. But a lawsuit during its construction revealed that the ship is owned by billionaire financier Nat Rothschild, heir apparent to the title of Baron Rothschild (held by his father).

According to Burgess Yachts, which handles charters, Planet Nine can accommodate about a dozen guests in nine cabins. The owner gets an entire deck to himself, “with a full suite, dressing rooms, saloon, study and terrace.” There’s a VIP suite and lounge on the bridge deck, a Jacuzzi on the sun deck and a cinema, steam room and numerous “toys.”

There’s also a beach club, with a door in the hull that folds down to reveal an indoor-outdoor steam room and sauna. A masseuse, two head chefs and helicopter pilot are part of the crew. (https://www.burgessyachts.com/en/charter-a-yacht/yachts-for-charter/planet-nine-00008706?)

We reached out to the marina for more details about Planet Nine.

“It’s a magnificent vessel,” said ONE°15’s Harbormaster Sam Barrett-Cotter. “It required two tug-assist vessels along with the marina’s inflatable RHIB [rigid-hulled inflatable boat] directing traffic to safely enter the marina.” The vessel arrived in Brooklyn straight from Gibraltar on Oct. 30.

Barrett-Cotter said the purpose of Planet Nine’s visit is both business and pleasure. “The guests are here to enjoy New York while the crew is here to utilize the conveniences of the city and the robust maritime industry that it offers. They are working with various contractors to do repairs and maintenance on the engine, water tanks, electronics, as well as inspections on fire protection equipment and life-saving equipment.”

The marina is not aware of the ship’s next destination, he said. “Generally, yachts make a fall season migration to Florida and the Caribbean, where they spend the winter before returning to the Northeast or Mediterranean for the summer.”

Explorer or Expedition yachts are “an increasingly popular concept for owners who want the sleek style of a luxury yacht but also the ability to travel around to remote parts of the world,” Barrett-Cotter said. “Planet Nine features an ‘ice-class’ hull so that it can access places like Antarctica and Alaska.”

Barrett-Cotter said owners of world-class vessels have started to discover ONE°15. “With brand new floating docks and the calmest water in the city we offer the best-in-class dockage for superyachts,” he said.

“It’s not just a question of tying up the boat and letting it sit there – we’re helping source materials, provisioning for the chef, coordinating pilotage and tug services, and basically doing whatever we can to make the stay as easy as possible for the captain and crew,” he said. “Captains know that when they need Hypalon repairs for their inflatable tender, or foreign garbage safely disposed of according to FDA guidelines, or the right contractor for an inspection of their water tanks, that we’re going to know how best to advise them.

“And the view isn’t too bad either!” he added. “We’re always proud when we see these yacht crew members — who have each been to more places around the world than we can imagine — taking photos and gasping at the stunning view of the city.”

Planet Nine will remain docked at ONE°15 Brooklyn Marina through the month of November.

Rothschild’s superyacht nemesis faces his day in court

S uperyachts are meant to be a source of pleasure, not pain. Spare a thought, then, for the banking dynasty scion Nat Rothschild, and other wealthy folk who fell foul of a boat maker a decade ago.

Rothschild, along with the property tycoon Robert Tchenguiz, was a client of Monaco Yachting & Technologies, run by the German businessman Peter Landers. It fell behind on building yachts, triggering lawsuits. In 2015, the High Court ruled that Landers owed Rothschild’s Swallowfalls firm €17 million for Nato, a 73m (240ft) boat with a helipad and spa pool.

Landers did not pay up. In 2020, an international arrest warrant was issued for him.

Nat Rothschild, with his wife Loretta Basey, is owed €17m

Last year, Swallowfalls filed a petition for bankruptcy against him in the UK. The saga reaches a

A composite picture of George Osborne, Oleg Deripaska and Peter Mandelson

Q&A: Peter Mandelson, Oleg Deripaska and George Osborne

How did the row start.

The row initially began shortly after Gordon Brown shocked the political world by reappointing Peter Mandelson , then the EU's trade commissioner and a sworn enemy of the prime minister, to the cabinet.

Soon afterwards it was claimed that Mandelson had "dripped pure poison" about him during a meeting with George Osborne two months earlier at Taverna Agni on the Greek island of Corfu.

Both men admitted the meeting took place, but, angry at the allegations, Mandelson threatened to reveal what the shadow chancellor had told him privately about the Conservatives.

The debacle raised questions about the prime minister's decision to bring Mandelson back into the cabinet after he was twice forced to resign from the government under Tony Blair's leadership.

What has that got to do with a Russian oligarch and his yacht?

One week later, the Sunday Times claimed Mandelson gave trade concessions worth up to £50m a year to Russia's richest man after being entertained by him on his "superyacht".

The encounter on the 238ft (73m) Queen K in Corfu this summer was said to be the latest in a series of social meetings between Mandelson and Oleg Deripaska - known as the "king of aluminium" - during Mandelson's term as trade commissioner.

The paper claimed that in the past three years Mandelson had twice acted to cut European aluminium import duties and Deripaska's company Rusal, the world's largest producer of aluminium, was one of the main beneficiaries.

At the time of Mandelson's Corfu holiday his trade department was a few weeks into a fresh investigation into aluminium foil tariffs that could have hit one of Deripaska's companies, the Sunday Times said.

A spokesman for Mandelson said: "They had been on holiday in the same area and it was purely a social occasion."

It subsequently emerged that Mandelson actually stayed on the yacht as a guest of Nathaniel Rothschild, the hedge fund manager and son of Lord and Lady Rothschild. Rothschild, the Times reported, had run out of room at his house.

The Liberal Democrats warned that Mandelson "needs to be extremely careful about any potential conflicts of interests" and said he should "not have been accepting hospitality from a billionaire who is a clear beneficiary of his policy decisions as European commissioner".

Why have the Tories now been dragged into the row?

Annoyed at reports of "what may or may not have happened at a private gathering" of his friends, Rothschild has written a letter in today's Times , claiming George Osborne, the Tory shadow chancellor, also accepted his hospitality and "found the opportunity of meeting with Mr Deripaska so good that he invited the Conservatives' fundraiser Andrew Feldman, who was staying nearby, to accompany him to Mr Deripaska's boat to solicit a donation."

Rothchild also claimed that Feldman suggested in a subsequent conversation, at which Deripaska was not present, that as Deripaska is not British and accepting a donation from him would breach party funding rules, that the donation could be "channelled" through one of Deripaska's British companies.

How does Osborne know Rothschild?

The two went to the University of Oxford together and were both members of the Bullingdon Club . Rothschild's mother helped fund Osborne's office. Osborne was reportedly staying with Rothschild on the Greek island of Corfu.

But in his letter to the Times, Rothschild warns the paper its "obsession with Mr Mandelson is trivial in light of Mr Osborne's actions".

What do the Tories say about the debacle?

The Conservatives deny "absolutely" that Osborne or Feldman attempted to solicit a donation from Deripaska.

"Nor did they suggest a method by which he could conceal a donation via a British company," the party said in a statement.

"Donations to the Conservative party were not discussed with Mr Deripaska. Rothschild suggested to Andrew Feldman that Mr Deripaska wanted to make a donation to the party through one of his British companies. The offer was not taken up."

20 Things You Didn't Know about Nathaniel Rothschild

Rothschild is a prominent name in the history of Britain since it is a generation of tycoons whose focus is in investments. The family is among the wealthiest families in the world. Nathaniel is one of them and the next in line to defend the big name of the family. Nathaniel's childhood was full of fun and immoral activities that might have been sparked by his wealthy family. While in college, ladies were all over him as they tried identifying themselves with the great family. Despite spending his early life in the comfort zone, he later changed and became an aggressive investor. He regained his lost glory and is now one of the wealthiest people today . Get to know more about the tycoon by checking these facts about him.

1. He is the youngest of his siblings

Nathaniel Rothschild is the youngest among the four siblings and the only son of Jacob Rothschild and Serena Mary. He was born on July 12, 1971, to a Jewish father and Christian mother. His father is a banker in British investment, a prominent member of Rothschild banking family and an honorary president of the Jewish Policy Research Institute. His mother was a racehorse owner in Britain; she died on January 13, 2019.

2. His education

Nathaniel went to Colet Court where he studied with George Osborne, the former Chancellor of Exchequer. He later went to Elton College and Wadham College, to study history. Nathaniel then joined Oxford for his masters, where he was fond of luxuries that were not in line with his educational interests. After graduation, he started his investment journey.

3. He is the heir to the title held by his father

Rothschild and Company Bank has been under the ownership of Rothschild's family, and the management is hereditary. Nathaniel is the one to succeed his father in possession of the title "Baron Rothschild," according to Super Yacht Fan . Rothschild's primary focus is the banking business, especially Rothschild and Company Bank. Being the only son in the family allowed him to inherit the management of the prominent bank of the family. Nathaniel has, however, always been active in the businesses of the family and banking and investing.

4. He has been married twice

Nathaniel has been in two marriages, with one leading to a divorce. The first marriage was with a model and socialite, Annabelle Neilson. They got married in 1994 and divorced in 1997 before having children together. His parents were not happy with their son's decision to marry Anabelle, and he eloped with her to Las Vegas. Annabelle died in July 2018. In August 2016, Nathaniel went ahead to marry Loretta Basey, who is a former model. They have a son together.

5. He owns a private jet

A private jet is a symbol of wealth, and Nathaniel has a Bombardier Global 600 private jet with the registration N4T. The plane was once used by Bumi for 18 months to fly around the world's biggest cities, and Nathaniel ended up charging them heftily. It is sometimes available for hire by interested parties, but he uses it to move to places he wishes to visit. The private plane costs $60 million and accommodates up to 14 passengers.

6. He hides a series of trusts in Switzerland

Most of the investments of Nathaniel are in the United Kingdom, but he hides some of the trusts in Switzerland, where he lives. Rumors have it that the trusts are worth £40 billion. The strategy of protecting these trusts might be a way to make him concentrate in accumulating his wealth. Besides, Switzerland has been preferred by most investors to stash their wealth as a way of reducing their tax liabilities since it is considered a tax haven.

7. He stays with his family in Switzerland

Nathaniel is known to be a lover of more beautiful things in life and spends time in the places that he loves. When Nathaniel got married to Loretta, they lived in New York for some time before moving to Switzerland in 2000. His father was not happy with his decision to move to Switzerland, but Nathaniel seems to enjoy the place and spends most of his time in his house. The couple adopted the citizenship of Switzerland and are paying their tax obligations. He has other homes in Moscow, Paris, London, Greece and New York and uses his jet to move around his homes.

8. He was once into drug abuse

The start of something is immaterial; the end is what matters as Nathaniel proves to the world. Despite being a prominent person, Nathaniel had some ups and downs as he was growing. According to Celeb Family , Nathaniel was known for vandalism and drug abuse. He belonged to Bullingdon club that influenced him to drugs. Some of Nathaniel's friends who spent time drinking with him say that he could drink the whole night and then spend the day sleeping while dressed in his formal suit. During this time, Nathaniel had not taken full control of his life and seemed to be just enjoying the wealth of his father. As he grew up, he realized that he had a great name to protect and changed for the better. Nathaniel stopped using drugs and focused on becoming a great person in the future. The change initiative worked for him, and he has been successful in his career and protecting his father's legacy.

9. Career history

After deciding to focus in building the best life for himself, Nathaniel worked in various sectors. He had a broad interest in business and hence worked mainly in the investment sectors. From 1996 to 2009, Nathaniel was a co-chairman of Atticus Capital. He also worked in Asia Resource Minerals, where he developed the interest to venture into mining, especially in other continents that have precious minerals. He is currently the chairman of JNR limited.

10. He is a member of several boards

Through his excellent work and knowledge in investment, Nathaniel is a member of many committees. He is a member of Belfer Center's International council which is in Harvard. Nathaniel is also part of the board of Brookings Institution serving in the advisory council. He is also an advisory board member at Barrick Gold Corporation. Being a member in such committees widens his skills in business through the various interactions and sharing of ideas.

11. He was rebellious during his childhood

It is hard to handle a rebellious person, and most of them end up unsuccessful. Nathaniel's childhood was full of rebellion, pride, and ignorance, leading many people to predict a difficult life for him. He once visited a friend and resisted any conformism or instruction from anybody. Despite the rebellious attitude, he was willing to take risks, and perhaps that was what led him to success.

12. He has a personal net worth of $1 billion

Rothschild's family is among the wealthiest families in the world with some sources claiming the family's income to be $400 billion. Being a member of the family, Nathaniel has a net worth of $1 billion. Most of his wealth seems inherited, but that is not the case. He is a very aggressive businessman and a risk-taker thus the wealth is a product of his hard work. The primary sources of his wealth are banking, investments, and real estate.

13. He has a private investment vehicle

Nathaniel has a private investment vehicle, NRI. The investment vehicles identify the investment opportunities that are available in the neighborhood and proceed to invest in various industries, including mining and real estate. NRI has expanded and has offices in Lima, Peru, Florida, and Miami. It has many projects as seen in their website and is run by management under the advice of Nathaniel.

14. He is linked to the son of Muammar Gaddafi

Nathaniel has essential links with Muammar's son Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, who is a suspect for various crimes associated with the oil wells in Libya. The two met in their educational journey, and since they are both investors, they shared ideas. Saif attended Nathaniel's 37th birthday, and the friendship has resulted in the two visiting each other. The close relationship between the two led to the organization of a dinner in New York to honor their friendship. However, the friendship of the two is only social since they never did businesses together. Nevertheless, there are some claims that Nathaniel is interested in the oil wells in Libya.

15. He is likely to become the richest in Rothschild's family

The generation of Rothschild is wealthy, but they are putting different efforts to either maintain or increase their wealth. Nathaniel is the most hardworking in the family, and he has made several investments in various sectors, that reap profits in billions. Nathaniel is not afraid of putting any amount of money to any business in which he sees the potential. He might be the next most productive member of the family if he goes on with that enterprising spirit.

16. He made a loss of £170 million in his oil company

Business involves a lot of risks; one can either make a profit or a loss in business. Despite the high profile in the business world, Nathaniel was a victim of a significant loss of £170million in his oil company in 2017. Nathan's shares in the company in 2012 were worth £190 million, but after the company made losses, his shares dropped to a worth of £21 million. The significant decline in the company led to most of the people quitting the company, including the advisory board leaving Nathaniel nursing the £170 million loss alone.

17. He was once termed as a "puppet master."

It is always essential to ensure that we can account for the things we say against other people since failure to do so leads to them having a wrong perception on us. Nathaniel was once part of a meeting that later resulted to him being called a "puppet master." The meeting was attended by Nathaniel, Oligarch Oleg, and Lord Mandelson. He later claimed that the meeting was over a shady deal and reported it to daily mail who posted it. Daily mail then found the whole thing to be fiction and apologized to their readers. The judge rejected the shady deal claims saying that Nathan was suffering a memory loss and was not sure of what he was saying. The allegations hence led to him being called a "puppet master" by the judges.

18. He owns the yacht Planet Nine

The yacht Planet Nine is one of the most famous yachts. Nathaniel owns the 73-meter long boat built by Admiral Yachts. The yachts name is a fictitious name of the ninth planet in the solar system. It was designed in 2018 at a total cost of $100 million and has a capacity for 16 guests in 8 cabins and 26 members of the crew in 3 cabins. He was found to be the owner after a legal dispute affecting it, and the yacht is now available for sale by Nathaniel at £ 85 million after the dispute was resolved.

19. His stand on money and investment

Nathaniel believes in unity. In one of his quotes, he encourages that when brothers work together, the house will be complete. When brothers get united according to him, nobody can compete against them. This quote by Nathaniel reflects the unity that exists in the family that places them at the top as far as wealth is concerned. Another quote by him is about the control of the money and the government. He says that the government is the one that controls the issuing of money and hence to control the government, you must control the issuance of money. Most of his quotes are in the line of making more money.

20. Racehorse Nathaniel is named after him

Naming our favorite pets might be based on the people we love most. Nathaniel's mother, Lady Rothschild, used the name of her son on a horse she owned. Racehorse Nathaniel was his mother's favorite horse that participated in various competitions including that of King George IV and Queen Elizabeth in 2011.

Look Inside a Spectacular Beachfront Bachelor Pad in Rio de Janeiro

Rothschild an inveterate traveler now divides his time between his Rio home and a handful of others

This article originally appeared in the February 2011 issue of Architectural Digest.

Glamour as well as mystery seem to surround the Honourable Nathaniel Philip Victor James Rothschild wherever he goes. Scion of the world's best known—and chicest—banking dynasty, he's a financial titan and international playboy who appears to spend most of his time aloft in his extensively equipped Gulfstream jet, flying between his homes in Klosters, Switzerland; London; New York; Paris; Moscow; and Corfu. While Rothschild is intensely private, details of his personal life, even his vacations, often make the papers in his native England, given that his entourage generally includes a few cabinet ministers, movie stars, models, and Russian oligarchs.

The 39-year-old Rothschild, known as Nat to friends, recently added another jewel to his crown of domiciles. In Rio de Janeiro he now owns a spectacularly sited beachfront property, a glass house built on a lush hillside in the 1980s by Claudio Bernardes, one of Brazil's most esteemed modern architects.

But by the time Rothschild acquired it, the place had seen better days. “It was in very bad condition when we found it,” says his Paris-based interior designer, Tino Zervudachi, whose anxiety only increased when Rothschild told him he wanted the entire place more or less rebuilt in a year.

Though London-born Zervudachi is himself a very worldly figure—and a partner in the blue-chip firm Mlinaric, Henry & Zervudachi—this was his first project in Brazil. Going native, he quickly surmised, was the way to proceed. “I wanted to use as much local material as we could, including the furniture and art,” he says. “I became enamored of Brazilian design. Everything is deeply connected to nature and seems to relate to its overpowering presence in the country. There is just this incredible ebullience of flora and fauna.”

The glasstop table in the living room is from Firma Casa

Working with a local architect, Luciano Pedrosa, he reconfigured the five-bedroom house, creating a huge glass-roofed great room for living and dining. Exotic hardwoods and stones glisten throughout, but there is relatively little in the way of textiles. “In tropical settings fabric retains humidity . . . which makes it rather disagreeable,” says Zervudachi in his clipped British accent. While he designed several major furnishings for the home, which were produced by Brazilian Afranio Cunha, he also bought a number of Brazilian-modern pieces, such as a pair of Whale chairs by Julia Krantz. Outdoors, on a terrace facing the sea, Zervudachi laid out what has become the urbane centerpiece of the residence: a pool whose elaborate tile design echoes the wave patterns on the famous Rio promenades by Roberto Burle Marx.

For Zervudachi's Oxford-educated client, in line to become the fifth Baron Rothschild, the good taste to savor all this is just in the blood. Waddesdon Manor, his family's turreted stone mansion in Buckinghamshire, is a signature example of the renowned style Rothschild. The future baron must be pleased with the results achieved in Rio, as he is now planning an addition. And, press-shy as he is, he has allowed his place to be published here. (“I'm rather surprised,” confides Zervudachi.)

Still, Rothschild remains characteristically elusive when sought out for comment. His assistant in London will not even divulge what continent he is on (“I cannot disclose,” she whispers over the phone). This might have something to do with the $3 billion merger he's just struck for his finance company, Vallar, with a seriously wealthy Indonesian family—an accord described in the financial press as one of the most complex of the past year.

After a deal like that, it would seem Rothschild is due for a vacation—perhaps in Rio? Time to check the papers.

Nathan Mayer Rothschild and the 'Waterloo Commission'

The part played by Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777-1836) and his brothers in helping the British Government to finance military operations against Napoleon is legendary. Nathan's London House, N M Rothschild, dealt in bullion and foreign exchange, and his remarkable successes in these fields earned him the contract from the British Government to supply Wellington's troops with gold coin in 1814 and 1815, leading up to the Battle of Waterloo.

'The best business I ever did'

Nathan himself is said to have described it as ‘The best business I ever did’ and The Times, in December 1823 reported that ‘Mr Rothschild played so important a part in the history of the present generation that it is most probable that his proceedings will never be forgotten’ . In the later years of the 19th century, some commentators even believed that Nathan Rothschild had made a fortune after Waterloo, acting on his early knowledge of the victory and buying into the market in the certain knowledge that stocks would rise once victory was confirmed. Some writers declared that Nathan was actually present at Waterloo, and had personally brought back the first news of victory, riding a succession of horses through Europe and crossing the English Channel in the dead of night. Close analysis of Rothschild finances has proved that this is not the case.

Paying the troops

After years of campaigning, in 1814 Wellington, advancing north across Spain, had driven the French back to the Pyrenees, but was in desperate need of money to pay his troops. Nathan Rothschild, still a relative newcomer to British banking, was commissioned by the British Government to supply the Duke with the necessary funds, and together with his brothers he set up a network of agents to buy up coin and transfer it to Wellington in the form of local currency. The firm of N M Rothschild was approached it is believed because the Government had already failed to establish a similar network of its own and had been let down by other more established London firms, and the Rothschild courier and communications network had gained a justifiable reputation for speed and reliability. The pressure was on the Rothschilds to succeed. Nathan understood that success in this business could lead to further important commissions by Britain and her allies, a belief that was confirmed in the postscript of a letter from a Rothschild courier, John Roworth: 'I am informed by Commissary White that you have done well by the early information which you had of the Victory gained at Waterloo'.

A million out of Waterloo?

Although it is virtually part of English history that Nathan Mayer Rothschild made 'a million' or 'millions' out of his early information about the Battle of Waterloo, the evidence is slender: little more, in fact, than Roworth's letter to Nathan ' you have done well' , bolstered by a persistent legend. In the absence of contemporary records at New Court, it is impossible to estimate the size of his gain. But knowing the structure of the market we can conclude that however much Nathan made out of Waterloo, it must have been very considerably less than a million pounds, let alone 'millions'.

The impact of Waterloo for the Rothschilds

For Wellington, Waterloo was the culmination of a long campaign against Napoleon: ‘ Hard pounding this, gentlemen; let's see who will pound longest'  was his prediction for the battle. For Nathan Rothschild, whose brothers saw him as their commanding general in their own parallel campaign during the Napoleonic Wars, Waterloo underlined the success of a business plan built on strong family ties and an unsurpassed communications network. ‘I, who know him so well, and who in the discharge of my public duty received so much assistance from him, can safely pronounce him to have been most capable, skilful, upright and liberal in the whole of course of his employment as an agent of the state’, an appreciation of Nathan Rothschild by John Herries, British Commissary-in-Chief at the time of Waterloo.
