Ship Upgrading Request to Update
Ships are essential if you want to head out to the great ocean .
The best of these ships available are called the Epheria Carracks .
This guide will show you what you need to upgrade to an Epheria Carrack .

You will need to pick a Sailboat or a Frigate early on as it will give you different options of Epheria Carracks you can ultimately upgrade your ship to .
The basic start er ship for most players is the Bartali Sailboat, however, you can opt to purchase a Sailboat or Frigate registration from the Central Market to skip this step.
2. Bartali Sailboat
▲ Bartali Sailboat
The Bartali Sailboat is the most basic of the large ships you can get. It can be purchased from Proix, the owner of the Dancing Marlin Tavern, for 10,000,000 Silver . You could also go through the questline , that begins from the “Vigorous Velia” quest , with a Lv. 50 or higher character to get a Bartali Sailboat as a quest reward.
( The actual quest that gives the ship as a reward is called “Jarette's Support .”)
As mentioned before, you can begin with a Bartali Sailboat and upgrade it all the way up to an Epheria Sailboat or Frigate. However, you could also purchase the ship licenses of Epheria Sailboats and Frigates from the Central Market to skip this part of the process.
3. Epheria Sailboat / Frigate
▲ Left ) Sailboat , Right ) Frigate
The Epheria Sailboat and Frigate are on the second stage of the carrack upgrade path .
As these two ships differ in which type of carracks they can upgrade to, it is an important decision to make. Sailboats allows you to eventually make the “ Balance” carrack or the “Advance” carrack. The Balance carrack has stats evenly distributed while the Advance carrack is ideal for bartering as it can carry more weight .
Frigates on the other hand allows you to make the “Valor” carrack or the “Volante” carrack. The Valor carrack is great for sea monster hunting and navy combat while the Volante carrack is the fastest of all the carracks .
You could make your own Epheria Sailboat or Frigate, however, it would save you a lot of time to simply purchase one from the Central Market .
▲ Ship Licenses can be purchased from the Central Market
If you would like to make your own, follow the steps shown below.
■ How to Upgrade
Register the ship you wish to upgrade at a wharf via the Wharf Manager. Then use the “Upgrade” menu and add all the materials required to upgrade the ship .
However , you cannot upgrade your ship under the following circumstances :
- A piece of equipment is not at max durability .
- The ship has equipment equipped or has items in its Inventory .
- A sailor is on board the ship.

The equipment required to upgrade the Bartali Sailboat to an Epheria Sailboat or Epheria Frigate can be purchased from Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria. You can then use Black Stone (Armor) to enhance them . When you fail an enhancement attempt, the max durability of the equipment will decrease. You can purchase more of the equipment and use the copies to repair the original’s max durability to full .
▲ Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria
Additionally, Sailboats and Frigates can both be improved . Once they are improved, you can use the skills Volley and FocusFire .
Volley allows you to move the cannons on the left or right and fire them. While FocusFire allows you to fire multiple shots quickly at a location of your choice.
There are certain upgrade materials that can be obtained by defeating sea monsters. So, having your ship improved will aid you in your endeavor to build a carrack.
You can improve your ships at the Wharf Manager .
※ However , improving your ship does not change the materials required to upgrade them to a Caravel or Galleass .

4. Epheria Caravel / Galleass
Once you have obtained your Epheria Sailboat or Frigate, you can then work toward upgrading them to a Caravel or Galleass .
▲ Left ) Epheria Caravel , Right ) Epheria Galleass
Caravels have 30 slots and can carry 10,000LT. This makes them great trading and bartering ships .
On the other hand, the Epheria Galleass has 4 cannons on each side, for a total of 8 cannons, which makes them great for naval combat.
Both of them can be improved to use the sailing skill Volley while moving, or the FocusFire skill to fire multiple shots quickly at a location of your choice for massive damage.

■ Crow’s Nest and Ravinia
You might not have heard of Crow’s Nest or Ravinia at this point in your adventure.
Crow’s Nest is a small island located north of Tinberra Island . Once you arrive in Crow’s Nest, you can talk to the NPC “ Ravinia .” She runs the Crow Coin Shop that sells items needed to upgrade large ships.
▲ “ Crow’s Nest” is the island covered in fog, north of Tinberra Island .
Ravinia also gives the " Ravinia’s Ship Upgrade Log " quests. You can complete these quests to get the materials you need for upgrades.
The first quest you get is called “Ravinia’s Ship Upgrade Log I” and the last quest is “ Ravinia’s Ship Upgrade Log VII.” It will take 7 days to accept these quests in order. When you complete each of these quests, Ravinia will reward you with “ Ravinia's Wiggly Waggly Letter .” You use these letters to accept quests from Ravinia. The quests she gives provide upgrade materials required to upgrade Caravels and Galleass .
The 4 pieces of equipment required to upgrade a Epheria Caravel or Epheria Galleass can be purchased from Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria . The equipment can be enhanced using “ Verdant Black Stones.” When using Verdant Black Stones to enhance ship equipment, you have a 100% chance to succeed at all levels. You will need Verdant Black Stone x55 to enhance a piece of equipment up to +10, a total of 220 Verdant Black Stones to enhance all four of them .
You can obtain Verdant Black Stones as follows.
1. Ravinia’s sisters have anchored in Port Epheria (Ruvinia), Velia (Rovinia), and Iliya Island (Revinia). You can exchange Lv. 1 trade goods through Ruvinia, Rovinia, and Revinia for a Crow Merchants Guild's Barter Voucher. 2. Bring the Crow Merchants Guild's Barter Voucher obtained from one of the sisters to Ravinia at the Crow’s Nest to exchange it for Verdant Black Stones. Rumor has it that Morco in Velia will also take Crow Merchants Guild's Barter Vouchers and exchange them for Verdant Black Stones as well.
5. Epheria Carrack(Balance, Advance, Volante, Valor)
You can upgrade the Epheria Carrack into four different types, and each vessel bears a unique trait. You can choose to upgrade your Carrack into one that best suits your playstyle .
- Advance | |
- Balance | |
- Volante | |
- Valor |
▲Epheria Carrack : Balance , Volante , Valor , Advance ( Starting Top-left and in clockwise direction )
Each carrack has a different trait.
◆ Epheria Carrack - Balance : A carrack with well-balanced stats .
◆ Epheria Carrack - Volante : An agile carrack with the fastest movement speed .
◆ Epheria Carrack - Valor : A combat-oriented carrack with the highest attack power .

Beginners Sailing Guide – Black Desert Online [BDO]
The Great Expedition patch introduced a lot of new and interesting aspects to life at sea in Black Desert Online. In this BDO sailing guide, I will explain how to get your first ship, how shipbuilding changed, how the new barter system works, sailors and the new sailing skill, and more.
Getting Your First Ship
Before you start sailing you need something to sail. In the old days, we only had rafts, rowboats, and fishing boats. And while those boats are still slightly useful, the first ship you should now get is the Bartali Sailboat.
The best way to get the Bartali Sailboat is by starting the “[The Great Expedition] Oquilla’s Eye” quest chain. This quest chain can be started with the Black Spirit at level 50 with the quest “Vigorous Velia”. After a few quests, you get a free “Ship License: Bartali Sailboat” item. You can also buy the “Ship License: Bartali Sailboat” item from Proix in Velia for 10 million silver if you want to have more than one ship.
Once you have gotten your hands on a ship license you need to go to a Wharf Manager, such as Croix (they’re brothers) in Velia, where you use the license to get your ship. After you’ve registered the ship you can take it out. Try it and see how you like it.
Sailing Your Ship
Controlling your ship is pretty straightforward. You steer it with the WSAD buttons or with your mouse like normally. The only thing you need to keep in mind is whether your sails are folded or not. If you are sailing against the wind you want to have your sails folded, but when you have the wind in the back you want to have your sails unfolded. There’s not much you can do about the sea current, but going against it will slow your ship down.
Tip: If you get your ship stuck it sometimes is enough to release the steering wheel (“R” button) and take control again for the ship to come unstuck.
Ship Info Screen
On the ship info screen, you get all the information you need to see how your ship is doing. To access the screen you can either use the F5 button or the R button depending on where you are standing on your ship.
- DP : The ships armor class
- Durability : The ship’s hit points.
- Weight : How much weight the ship can have and how much weight it is carrying, including sailors.
- Cabin Status: The number of free cabins you have and how many are being used.
- Accumulated Barter: The number of Barter deals you have made on that ship in total.
- Rations: The number of rations you have and the maximum number you can carry. Rations are used up regularly while sailing and doing “Bartering” actions.
- Sea Current Resistance: How affected your ship is to sea currents.
- Sea Strom Resistance: How affected your ship is to sea storms.
- Speed: The base speed of your ship.
- Accel.: How fast your ships can accelerate.
- Turn: How maneuverable your ship is.
- Brake: How quickly your ship can decelerate.
- Damage: Any damage bonus that is applied to your ship’s cannons (and maybe ramming??).
- Ration Efficiency: How efficient your rations are, a higher number means fewer rations used.
- Resilience: Not sure.
Ship Gear and Their Benefits
You can also equip ship gear on this screen. There are five types of ship gear with two tiers, green and blue. As usual, the blue grade is more expensive but gives somewhat better stats. There are also two versions of each blue grade gear and then there is separate gear for sailboats and frigates.
The Bartali Sailboat uses the Epheria Sailboat gear so be sure to buy that from the Wharf Manager.
Types of the Epheria Sailboat Gear and the Basic Stats They Give
Type | ||
+ 1000 Durability +300 extra damage to sea monsters +100 extra damage to ships | + 5000 Durability +1000 extra damage to sea monsters +1000 extra damage to ships + 5000 Durability + 500 extra damage to sea monsters + 240 extra damage to ships | |

+100 LT weight limit | +2% speed +150 LT weight limit +200 LT weight limit | |
+1% speed | +10000 rations + 4% speed +10000 rations +2% speed +150 LT weight limit |
Green grade gear is purchasable from Croix the Wharf Manager NPC in Velia. To get your hands on blue grade gear you will either need to make it yourself or buy it from the central market. To craft blue ship gear you need to have a level 4 ship gear workshop. There is one like that in Port Epheria.
Ship Abilities
Finally, you can see the extra abilities you get with your ship once your sailing skill reaches a certain point. A lot of players aim for skilled 1 as that lets them use the Breezy Sail skill which increases the ship’s speed.
The next thing we need to know is how sailors work.
To hire your good sailor you need to buy a “Sailor Contract Certificate”. You can buy them from Philaberto Falasi in Epheria, Islin Bartali at Velia’s Inn, and Criox at Velia docks. Once you have a certificate you need to find and talk to a sailor looking for a job and hire them through the chat interface.
To find the location of sailors looking for a job you can talk to Philaberto, Croix or Islin and ask them about hiring sailors. This will show you the location of sailors looking for a job, which is the beach in Epheria, inside Velia’s Inn (not the one at the docks) and at the harbor in Iliya.
Sailors looking for a job have a tag above their head which tells you what type of sailor he is. The table below has all the starting stats on each type of sailor you can get so you should refer to it when you are getting yourself a new sailor. Now as your sailors gain experience these stats will also improve to some extent.
Type of Sailor | Speed | Acceleration | Turn | Brake | Appetite | Cabin Cost | Weight | Location |
Ambitious | 1.6 | 0.2 | 0.2 | 0.2 | 150 | 10 | 200 | Velia and Epheria |

Experienced | 1 | 1 | 0.3 | 0.3 | 150 | 10 | 250 | Velia and Epheria |
Honest | 0.5 | 0.5 | 0.5 | 0.5 | 120 | 7 | 200 | Iliya |
Innocent | 1.2 | 0.3 | 0.3 | 0.3 | 150 | 10 | 200 | Velia and Epheria |
Powerful | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 150 | 8 | 500 | Iliya |
Smart | 0.4 | 0.4 | 0.4 | 0.4 | 100 | 5 | 500 | Velia and Epheria |
Strong | 0.5 | 0.5 | 1.5 | 1.5 | 100 | 8 | 250 | Iliya |
Tenacious | 0.2 | 0.2 | 0.8 | 4.0 | 100 | 5 | 300 | Velia |
Tough | 0.3 | 0.3 | 0.3 | 3.0 | 100 | 5 | 300 | Velia and Epheria |
Treasure-Seeking | 0.2 | 0.2 | 4.0 | 0.8 | 110 | 5 | 300 | Velia and Epheria |
Which type of sailor is best depends entirely on what you intend to do with your ship. If you are going to use it for trading and bartering then sailors with speed boosts and low weight are best, such as innocent and ambitious types, while if you intend to use your ship for combat situations of some sort then sailors which give your ship better turn, break and acceleration become more important.
Sailor Stats Explained
In the image above you can see the sailor interface. The first stat is the sailor’s appetite which is the number of rations the sailor consumes each cycle and cabin cost is the cabin space the sailor needs. Weight is also important as this number is redacted from the total carrying capacity of your ship. So having a heavy crewmember reduces the weight of goods you can carry without slowing down.
Next are the sailor’s abilities. The first four abilities of the sailor are Endurance (Speed), Wits (Acceleration), Awareness (Turn), and Strength (Brake). The sailor’s ability with these skills is added directly to the respective ship’s stat.
The later four abilities are only gained when the sailor reaches level 10. Seasoned Sailor reduces the negative effects of sea currents, Son of the Wind reduces the effect of sea storms, Abstain reduces the number of rations needed each cycle and Natural Born Soldier gives your ship extra resilience.
Sailor Condition and When Sailors Get Sick
A sailor’s condition can become worsened, for example, if you run out of rations while out on the sea. You need to feed your sailor with raisin bread to restore his condition. You can buy raisin bread from the same NPC’s that sell you a sailor contract or in the central market. If a sailors condition reaches 0 he becomes sick. To cure him you need to give him an Elixir of Regeneration.
How Sailors Get Experience
You sailor can get experience in the following ways:
- From bartering
- Randomly while sailing
Getting More Sailors
You start out with a single slot for sailors. To get more sailors you need to get “Sailor Oath’s” which are items that grant you extra sailor slots when used. The “best” way to get them is by continuing the Great Expedition questline mentioned before. The one that started with the Black Spirit at level 50 with the quest “Vigorous Velia”. This questline will, after you get Bartali’s Sailboat, also give you in total five sailor’s oaths. You can then use those oaths to expand your sailor slots.
Quests for a Sailing Career
There are a couple of quest chains that are great to complete if you intend on a life at sea. These are the [ADV] Exploring the Balenos Sea and [ADV] Exploring the Calpheon Sea. You can find them in your quest tab which opens by pressing the “O” button. Once you have completed these chains you will have discovered all the islands north of the area between Velia and Epheria.
After completing those two chains you could also bark upon “The Uncharted Sea, History of Margoria” questline and “Call of the Ocean: Journey to the Deep Sea.
Getting Sailing Experience
Now once you are familiar with your ship and perhaps even gotten yourself an Epheria sailboat it is time to start increasing your sailing skill to at least skilled 1.
To do this you sort of need to complete a few daily quests. You can just sail around in the Margoria sea, but that is a really slow way to get sailing experience.
Daily Quests which Increase Sailing Experience
- Delivering Goods – You will need to deliver goods to a specific island (Tinberra or Narvo or Baremi)
- For a Wider Trade Route – Barter successfully three times.
- Wanted: Hungry Sea Creatures – Kill three Ocean Stalkers or Hekaru
- Wanted: Cox Scouts in Disguise – Kill in total 20 of Drunk Snipers, Barracks or Pirate Flags.
- [Daily] How to Recover Sailors – Cook 3 Chowder and give to Proix
- A Treasure Swimming in the Ocean – Kill Hekaru or Ocean Stalker
- Outlaws in the Ocean – Kill Goldmont Large Battleship
- Stay Sharp – Kill Goldmont Small Battleship
- Through the Rough Tides – Deliver goods to one of four locations.
The quests in bold are quests that you can easily do solo. The others are doable solo, but much harder than with a group.
Upgrading your Bartali Sailboat
The next step you can take is to upgrade your Bartali Sailboat to either an Epheria Sailboat or an Epheria Frigate. This step is important as it decides which ship path you take from thereon. The image here below shows you the upgrade path you can take from the Bartali Sailboat.
As a rule of thumb, if you want to emphasize bartering you go for a sailboat, but if you want to go sea monster hunting or take part in combat, then the Epheria frigate is a better choice.
Now to upgrade your ship you first need to get all of the ship’s green gear to enhancement level +10 (see my bdo enhancement guide ). You also need to collect the required materials which are:
Materials Needed for an Epheria Sailboat
- 800 x Standardized Timber Squares
- 1500 x Pine Plywood
- 600 x Steel Ingots
- 300 x Flax Fabric
- 100 x Hard Pillar
- Ship Upgrade Permit: Epheria Sailboat
Materials Needed for an Epheria Frigate
- 1000 x Standardized Timber Squares
- 1000 x Pine Coated Plywood
- 800 x Jade Coral Ingots
- 450 x Enhanced Flax Fabric
- Ship Upgrade Permit: Epheria Frigate
Once you have then in storage at a town with a wharf you can bring your Bartali Sailboat there and use the wharf manager to upgrade your ship into either an Epheria frigate or Epheria sailboat.
The same method is then used to upgrade your ships even further, which means that you don’t need to constantly buy new ships, you can just concentrate on upgrading one or two of them.
The bartering system is an interesting add-on for those of us that enjoy playing on the sea. In simple terms, it is a way to turn land-based resources into bartering items step-by-step from level 1 to level 5 and then turn the level 5 items into sea coins.
Why Bother With Bartering
Because bartering is the only way you can get some of the materials needed for the higher grade ships and ship gear. And unless you have no interest in Black Deserts Ocean content then you sort of need to get the better ships and ship gear.
Bartering can also be a way to earn some silver and even a decent way once you reach the higher tiers of bartering.
And finally, in my opinion, bartering is the best way to level up your sailors.
How to Barter
To be able to barter you will need to use a Bartali’s Sailboat or any higher-tiered ship. You cannot barter in a fishing boat or rowboat. You will also need to have the materials you intend to use for the barter in the ship’s cargo hold. You can load and unload a ship’s cargo hold at the wharf manager NPC.
To see what materials you need to start your bartering chain you can open up the bartering interface. There you will see all the bartering options you have available, regardless of wither you have discovered the island with the bartering option.
Completing a Bartering Chain
When you first start bartering you will only see a single bartering chain. My first one was 30 Clown’s Blood –> Golden Sand –> Cron Castle Gold Coins –> Old Hourglass –> Solidified Lava –> Azure Quarts –> Sea coins. Each step of the chain gives you either the same amount as the bartered item or more. This means that once you complete a bartering chain you will be left with surplus materials.
For this chain, I had the following items left once I completed the chain: 4 golden sand, 2 Cron castle gold coins, 6 old hourglasses, 8 solidified lava and four azure crystals. I could sell the higher tiered items for 44 million silver or keep them in the hopes of using them to complete another bartering chain faster.
Once you have completed a chain, you need to open the “Barter Information” screen to refresh the possible barters you can perform. You can refresh this earlier, but for your first run, I suggest completing the chain. As your bartering continues you will get access to more chains and a wider availability of bartering options.
So that’s about all you need to know to successfully start your sailing career. If you found this guide useful then please share it with your friends and allies in BDO. So good luck on the seas and by the way, I also have a few other guides you might find useful.

Margoria Sea Monsters & Their Drops
When you are in the Great Ocean, you will encounter various deadly sea monsters. These monsters can’t be killed by traditional means and must be hunted with large Epheria Sailboat/Frigate or Guild Galley, which have cannons that can be manned by players. The player steering the boat can also do damage by ramming the monster, using the Ram Skill (Q).
The rewards of hunting sea monsters Although challenging, battling sea monsters provides several benefits. They drop items that are used to craft ship gear, which improves ship stats like movement speed, turn, stamina, etc. Killing sea monsters also helps to provide guild funds and guild XP. You will be unable to promote your sailors in quests like: [Boatman Promotion] The Man and the Sea I , if you do not hunt sea monsters.

Perform Heating on Young Sea Monster’s Neidan x10 to obtain [Guild] Sea Monster’s Neidan x1.
Great Ocean Events
While you are in Ross Sea or Margoria Sea, you may encounter events which will harm your ship if you are travelling afk.
Tornadoes only occur when you are at the wheel of the ship and moving. They damage your ship and may cause you to lose trade items from cargo.
Your fishing will be interrupted when struck by lightning. This causes your AFK fishing session to stop.
It can spawn with stormy weather and will force you out of the helm, stopping your boat. You can kill it with cannon fire. It can occur when you are at the wheel of your ship, whether you are moving or not. If you don’t want to fight it, return to your ship’s wheel and sail away. The Phantom Ship will disappear after it is a certain distance away from you.
Margoria Lost Item
Margoria Lost Item spawns randomly on sunken ship remains
You can loot it with a Silver Key It’s a little confusing, but I think you randomly obtain items from Furious Sea Spirit Fragment loot table shown on bdocodex.com.
- Faded / Plain / Beautiful / Resplendent Margoria Treasure
- Sealed Golden Treasure Chest
- Bottle with a Note
- 1G / 10G / 100G Gold Bar
Vell – World Boss
Vell will spawn every Sunday at 14:00 PDT for NA and 16:00 CEST for EU, north of Lema island:
Since April 30th 2019, Vell now appears in all servers. Vell’s overall HP was adjusted to match the global spawn system. They also fixed the issue where you could not control your Ship if Vell was killed while performing the jump and dive attack that caused tidal waves.
30 minutes before Vell breaks free, there will be an alert message for all servers
- World Boss Vell’s HP is shared among different servers.
- You can use [Hunting] Matchlock for killing Lopters
- There will be no penalty for being killed by Vell.
- Vell will now despawn naturally after 30 minutess. When Vell despawns naturally, you will receive loots of a grade less.
- Vell will drop loot for players who inflict damage even once with a cannon.
- PvP: 10 minutes before Vell appears up until Vell dies, Guild Wars or PvP will now be blocked off.
Vell Location Map
Vell is quite a distance North from Lema Island. Thank you to somethinglovely.net for providing the image below. This is a good website to use to find the location of any world boss. Just type their name in the search. Here is a direct link to Vell on somethinglovely.net

Boat Types & Boat List (Small Boats)
The following boat types, I have labeled small, because they are inferior to the Margoria, Great Ocean type of boats that should be used in Margoria (Great Ocean) waters. However, these smaller boats are perfect for the waters surrounding the main land. Good for fishing and exploring inside safer waters. They are also much easier to obtain and build. One only requires 10k silver from a vendor. Of course, cheaper price means lower boat stats. These ships are not recommended for Great Ocean waters. Be extremely careful and patient, if you decide to take these boats into Ross/Margoria seas.

Quest + Guild Missions for a Guild Galley You can obtain a galley through the quest [Guild] I Have a Dream , which requires getting 150 Old Moon Combat Seal and 150 Old Moon Life Seal . To get Old Moon Seals, your guild will need to do combat and life Guild Missions, which give 1 to 4 Old Moon Seals, depending upon the difficulty.
Then you can exchange them for a [Guild] Ship License: Galley .

Patch Notes – 20th June 2018 – Guild Crafting system has been revamped:
You can access the Guild Crafting window from Guild (G) > Guild Crafting.
In the Guild Crafting window, select “Select Product” and then the item and quantity you want to produce.
After you press “Start Crafting,” a menu will appear where you can input the crafting materials.
You can input the required materials from your personal inventory.
Please note that you can not retrieve items you have inputted.
Once all the materials have been inputted, crafting can begin.
Once crafting begins, the expected work time until completion will appear, as well as a button to “Complete Now.”
The completed product will automatically be stored in your Guild Storage.
Instead of using workers, Guild members can now input items from their personal Inventories for Guild Crafting.
However, you need to input all of the necessary materials to start crafting.
(Therefore, we believe that it would be helpful to gather all the necessary materials before bidding on a Guild House.)
The crafting time for each item you can Guild Craft is set. You can use Guild Funds to use the “Complete Guild Crafting Now” function and finish crafting an item immediately.
It will cost 10,000 Silver per second left of the estimated work time to “Complete Now.”
You cannot choose multiples of the same item for Guild Crafting.
There is a daily limit for each craftable item through Guild Crafting.
Each craftable item through Guild Crafting can be crafted one at a time..
Guild Activity will not rise for Guild Crafting.
- Guild Crafting specs:
- Patch Notes – 15th August 2018: It has been changed that items produced from Guild Crafting can be stacked in Inventory. If you have the relevant items in the Inventory separately in Inventory, you can store them in Storage and retrieve again to have them stacked in Inventory.

Great Ocean Epheria Boats
Is it worth it to acquire specialized Great Ocean boats?
You will need to hunt sea monsters, if you would like to promote your sailors in quests like: [Boatman Promotion] The Man and the Sea I .
Epheria Sailboat vs Epheria Frigate
The Epheria Sailboat is a nice personal boat, best used for trading purposes, but does have 2 cannons for sea monster hunting. This sailboat is the least expensive Epheria boat to build and costs half as much to equip with blue grade sailboat gear. It has over twice as much storage as the Epheria Frigate, but suffers a 10% penalty to Acceleration, Turn, Brake, and Speed. The Epheria Sailboat also helps traders by having 1,000LT more weight limit.

- So which Epheria ship is best?
- Epheria Sailboat: 25 storage slots. 5,000LT weight limit. 10% lower Speed, Brake, Accel, Turn. 2 cannons. Blue boat gear requires 50% less materials.
- Epheria Frigate: 12 storage slots. 4,000LT weight limit. 10% higher Speed, Brake, Accel, Turn. 4 cannons. Blue gear requires 50% more mats.
- TLDR: Epheria Sailboat excels at trading. Epheria Frigate excels at hunting Sea Monsters
Sailor / Boatman
Sailor & boatman basics.
Guild Galley and Epheria Sailboat/Epheria Frigate can be equipped with 1 Sailor or Boatman, depending upon which type of boat. Boatmen are used on Epheria ships and [Guild] X Sailors on Guild Galleys. These NPCs provide different passive buffs to your ship, depending upon which race you choose. You can hold multiple different workers in your inventory and switch them out as needed. In order to fill a boat’s sailor/boatman slot, you have to buy (hire) a sailor from an NPC. You can improve boatman/sailor buffs by doing certain quests, when your Sailing skill reaches a certain level (Skilled/Professional). Sailors/Boatmen are treated like an inventory item and not like normal workers.
Sailors for Guild Ships (Galley) In order to obtain sailors for your Guild Galley, you have to buy them with silver from a Guild Wharf Manager NPC. They cost 2.5 million silver and can only be equipped by Guild Officers.
Boatman for Epheria Sailboats/Frigates In order to obtain a boatman for your Epheria Ships, you have to buy them with 1 million silver and get 500 Amity with one of 4 different NPCs, depending upon which boatman and buffs you want. (Or you can purchase any 4 boatmen from the <Work Supervisor> Lilvayne in Calpheon City.) All Boatmen of the same race have the same stats, no matter if they are for Frigates or Sailboats. In other words, Frigate boatmen have the same stats as Sailboat boatmen. They just have a little different name, depending upon the Epheria boat type: such as “Frigate Sailor Contract: Boatman Bravant” instead of “Sailboat Sailor Contract: Boatman Bravant”.

Boatman (Epheria Sailboat & Epheria Frigate) Contract Renewal: Skilled/Professional Boatman (for Epheria Sailboat and Epheria Frigate) costs 500 Amity from Tirol at Dias Farm, Calpheon. Amity Points will decrease by 500. You can buy multiple when the window is open and you don’t have to repeat the amity game unless you close out the window. Contract renewals can be placed in Storage and used between characters on the same account. It’s possible to access a Boatman contract renewal in your storage with a Storage Maid at sea. The contract renewal will extend the contracted period by 24 hours, and Boatmen contracts can be renewed up to 7 times.

Sailing Quests: Through the Rough Tides
Through the Rough Tides has 4 different options…
- Through the Rough Tides: Epheria
- Through the Rough Tides: Velia
- Through the Rough Tides: Altinova
- Through the Rough Tides: Ancado
- Talk to the Wharf Manager NPC
- If your mount has items in its inventory, the ship cannot be transported.
- Ship transport costs 100k Silver, and it takes 10 minutes to complete.
She will give you the option to go to one of 4 locations for the daily. The list is in order of least xp to most xp. Think of it as, the farther you have to travel the more sailing xp you get from the quest.
After you accept the quest to go to one of those locations, make sure you grab the Old Moon Trade Item. If you do not grab the trade item you cannot finish the quest.
The Ancado quest gives the most xp by far, but I should warn you that it’s a terrible idea to sail all the way there. It will be much faster to sail to land and then run your horse to the desert to turn in the trade item.
The Rough Tides: Ancado sailing daily is a long process where you have to cross the entire ocean twice. Unless you enoy sailing or have another reason to go to Port Ratt, you might want to think twice before spending 2 hours on this one quest.
Boat & Cannon Emotes
Press the following command keys to have your character perform the special actions/emotes while on certain boats or cannons:
Z : All aboard!
X : Portside, fire!
C : Starboard, fire!
V: Let’s feed them to the fish!
Z : Harpoon ready to fire!
X : Set sail!
C : Fire in the hole!
V : We need ammunition!

Awsome guide thank you for taking the time!!
Hi, thank you for your very helpful & highly appreciated guide(s). I have a question regarding firing cannons from players. After almost 60 days I finished building my frigate last weekend. We made a short trip with 3 persons in a group. When it came to fire the cannons (Intention is SMH with family members) it appeared, my partners were not able to fire the cannons. I could. We are curious if there are special requirements to fire a cannon on a ship. We are not in a guild. We play in a group. We are on console. One of … Read more »

Introduction
The update brings various new content, as well as brand new T2 and T3 ships and completely reworks the way that ships work. Crew members can now be assigned to your ship and can be used to perform actions at islands, such as searching for resources or pillaging loot. A new Barter system has also been put in place which allows you to trade items you find for other materials that are used to craft the new ships and new ship gear. A new currency called “Crow Coins” have been implemented as well and a new island where special loot can be found. Finally, a new guild boss “Kahn” has been added which must be defeated with cannons and can drop the “Kahn’s Heart” which is an alternative to Vell’s Heart.
More details including all crafting materials and stats can be found below!
I also recommend checking out our Bartering guide for a full guide on the bartering system and how to obtain the new Caravel ship.
The Cog ship is a new “fishing boat” and can be crafted at the shipyard in Port Epheria (Shipyard 3-5, 2F). You are also rewarded with a free Cog ship when you complete the main sailing quest. The ship has the Breezy Sail skill by default but CANNOT be repaired as well as having low HP. The ship does not have any cabins and therefore cannot hold any crew members.

Ship Rework and new UI
All T2 and T3 ships now have a new UI when you board them. There are a few key changes which are important to note.
Currents and Wind
Firstly, ocean currents and wind have been added. These affect your ship speed, which can be seen on your new ship UI. The numbers show the current strength of the wind/current, and the arrows around the border show their direction. Ideally, you want to have both arrows at the bottom to get the maximum ship speed. Going against the wind/current will cause you to go very slowly and may even make your boat go backwards if they are too strong.
Currents do not change and depend completely on your position in the sea. There are also no currents near the land. Wind however, can change at any time and becomes stronger the further out you are. The wind icon will change colour depending on its strength.
Ship Rations
Also, the “power” stat has been changed to ship rations on all boats and will now run out quicker. Rations are consumed when the boat is moving and will drain quicker when you use your ship skills or when you use the island barter system. When you run out of ship rations, your boat will move much slower and may not even move at all if you are going against the wind/current. You are also unable to use ship skills if you run out of rations.
To restore your ship rations , you need to go to a wharf manager and refuel the ship. You can also get your ship crew to gather supplies from islands for the chance to restore a small amount of your ship rations. It’s also important to note that you are now unable to restore rations on T2 and T3 using the Breezy Crystal (item will still be consumed).
If you are unable to restore the ship rations you can use Emergancy Rations. This is done using consumable foods. The higher grade the food is, the more rations it will give your ship. Whilst on your ship, press P to open the Ship info window and then click the + (plus) symbol next to rations. You can now select a food to use and the quantity you would like to use (similar to feeding workers).
Item Grade | Emergancy Rations |
---|---|
White | 80 |
Green | 100 |
Blue | 240 |
Yellow | 4000 |
Orange | 22000 |
Cannons on T2 or T3 ships can no longer be mounted by a player. Your ship will now automatically store a certain amount of cannon balls when you refuel them at a wharf manager (300 for Epheria Caravel600 for Epheria Gallaeass). This means you do not need to buy cannonballs for your T2 or T3 ships but if you run out of cannon balls you will need to go back to the wharf manager to restock.
The cannons are now controlled using LMB and RMB. LMB will fire all the cannons on the left side of your ship, and RMB will fire all the cannons on your right side. So if your ship has 4 cannons on each side, you will fire all 4 cannons on that side and use a total of 4 cannon balls. The cooldown for your cannons is shared so you cannot fire both sides at the same time. However, there is a new ship skill which will give you a seperate cooldown for each side.
Another important thing to note is that T2 and T3 cannons will not be as effective against vell. This means that using your T1 ship (Epheria Sailboat/Frigate) will be better against vell.
Gear and Inventory Management
Finally, Equipment and your ship inventory can no longer be used when you are out in the ocean. This means you will not be able to store items directly in your ship inventory any more and you must instead go to a wharf manager to deposit/withdraw items or ship gear from your boat. However, you can now move items directly from your town storage into your ship (if you are at a wharf manager in a town). In addition, if your ship is destroyed, all cargo on the ship will be destroyed as well.
Sailors and Crew Management
Introduction to crew members.
Crew members are used on T2 and T3 ships to perform certain actions such as pillaging for resources on an island or using the new bartering system . Each crew member has their own level and stats and can be leveled up by killing sea monsters to increase their stats. Crew members can go up to a maximum of level 10 and can gain exp by killing sea monsters.
Hiring Crew Members
To begin hiring crew members, you must first complete a the “[The Great Expedition] Oquilla’s Eye” questline from your Black Spirit which will introduce you to bartering. The questline will give you a free crew member and will also give you increase the amount your sailor slots.
You can have a maximum of 20 sailor slots. To gain more sailor slots after completing the questline, you will need to buy the “Captain’s Medallion” item from the pearl store:
- Pearl Store (F3) > Function > Captain’s Medallion – 500 pearls each (maximum of 14 purchases)
Once you’ve completed the questline, you will need to buy a crew member contract. This costs 3 million silver and can be bought from the innkeeper Islin Bartali in Velia, from Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria or Criox at Velia docks.
You must then find a sailor to hire. Sailors are found in these locations:
- Velia – inside the Inn around the tables
- Port Epheria – along the beach near the whale
- Iliya Island – along the harbor and up the road
You can now attempt to hire a sailor, if you fail to hire them, the contract is consumed and the sailor will walk away from you. You cannot attempt to hire the same sailor for a certain period of time (1 day or more). If you are successful, the sailor will now join your crew and can be assigned to a ship at the wharf manager.
Managing your Crew
Some crew members will demand more cabins and this may limit the amount of crew members you can have on your ship. If you run out of Rations on your ship, your crew members will start to lose condition. If a crew member runs out of Condition, they will no longer do any actions on your ship and their stats will no longer apply. They must be fed a new food item called Chowder to recover. Sailors also drop to 0 Condition if you Remote Collect your ship, or if your ship is destroyed.
Sailors can also become sick. To cure a sick Sailor you must use an Elixir of Regeneration, which is made using Simple Alchemy.
The recipe for Chowder is below:
- Dried Pearl Oyster Flesh x1
- Smoked Pork x2
- Teff Bread x1
The recipe for Elixir of Regeneration is below:
- Mandragora Essence x1
- Essence of Magic Power x1
- Oil of Regeneration x1
- Troll Blood x2
Sailor Stats and Types of Sailors
Sailors have stats that can increase your ship’s Speed, Acceleration, Turn, and Brake.
Sailor Stats which increase your Ship Stats:
- Endurance – Increases your ship Speed
- Wits – Increases your ship Acceleration
- Awareness – Increases your ship Turn
- Strength – Increases your ship Brake
Sailors also have other stats:
- Sailors have a weight when they are added to your ship. Giants weigh 500 LT, Goblins are usually 100 – 200 LT, Dwarves are 300 LT and Humans are around 200 – 300 LT.
- Sailor Appetite is how often you will need to feed them Chowder
- This is the Sailors current condition. Sailors with 0 Condition have a chance to become sick. Condition can randomly decrease whilst you are at sea and after using Explore.
- These stats improve your cannons in different ways. Patience increases your ships cannon reload speed. Force will improve the cannon range when using FocusFire, Focus will improve the accuracy and reduce the spread of the cannons and Vision improves the angle of your cannons. Only certain types of sailors can have these stats.
- Sailors gain EXP slowly through bartering and will gain more EXP when you kill sea monsters.
- The amount of EXP the sailor gains depends on the number of Sailors on the ship.
- 1 Sailor: 100% EXP
- 2–3 Sailors: 120% EXP (60% / 40% each)
- 4–5 Sailors: 140% EXP (35% / 28% each)
- 6–7 Sailors: 160% EXP (27% / 22% each)
- 8–10 Sailors: 180% EXP (22.5% / 20% / 18% each)
When you hire a sailor you can see the type of sailor on the name tag above their head. Below is a table showing the base stats each type of sailor can have. As the sailor levels up it will gain better stats.
The best sailors you can get for Bartering is the Innocent Sailors.
New Island – Eye of Oquilua
A new island has been added north of Lema island is is called Eye of Oquilua. Every 3 hours plumes of water will appear and drop treasure chests that have been resting deep in the ocean. A notification will appear and the powerful plumes of water will appear at this time. They do deal damage but there is no death penalty if you die to them.
When a treasure chest is dropped, you have 1 minute to open it before it disappears. You will need a silver key to open the chests and can recieve a varity of different items.

Island Actions – Barter System
You can now interact with NPCs, on islands around Magoria, directly from your boat. When you get close to the NPC you will have the option to drop anchor on your ship. Once you’ve dropped the anchor you will have 4 options to choose from:
- Explore – explore the island and recieve a random outcome (examples include increasing or decreasing your ship rations, increasing or decreasing your ship HP, increasing or decreasing your crew members loyalty/stamina)
- Supply – explore the island and if successful you may obtain a random item (requires 100 rations or higher)
- Barter – opens the barter window (more information below)
- Depart – raises the anchor so you can move your ship again
You must have a crew member on your ship to be able to use the island actions (except Barter)! Exploring or using the supply action has a cooldown of 20 minutes.
Barter System
Make sure to check out our Bartering guide for a detailed guide about the bartering system.
To barter with the NPC you must have a crew member on your ship and must also have the items you want to trade in your ship inventory (you must place them in the inventory at a wharf manager).
Barter trade information can be reset every 4 hours and can be seen from the world map. You are able to perform a certain amount of barter trades based on your Parlety points. Trades reset at every day at at 6AM UTC.
At first some NPCs will not offer Bartering until you have higher tier trade items. To obtain higher trade items you will need to exchange materials to get higher tiers:
Land Materials → Tier 1 Trade | |
Tier 1 Trading Goods → Tier 2 Trading Goods | |
Tier 2 Trading Goods → Tier 3 Trading Goods | |
Tier 3 Trading Goods → Tier 4 Trading Goods | |
Tier 4 Trading Goods → Tier 5 Trading Goods | |
Land Materials → New Ship Materials and Reinforced Materials |
If you continue to barter you will eventually be able to exchange items for a new currency called “Crow Coins”. The amount of Crow Coins you have can be viewed on in your inventory.
As well, trade items can be sold for silver at the following prices:
Not for sale | |
Not for sale | |
1 million silver coins | |
2 million silver coins | |
5 million silver coins |
Guild Boss – Kahn
The new guild boss “Kahn” has been added and is available once you complete a specific guild quest. You must obtain Blue Wave Crystals x20 and then exchange this item at Canilla Delkas at the Eye of Oquilua Island, located north of Lema Island. She will then give you a summon scroll piece. You can also collect summon scroll pieces by defeating Cox Pirate’s Shadow Wraith. Once you have 9 pieces you must place them in a shape in your inventory to recieve a summoning scroll.
The guild master must then summon Kahn using the summon scroll on the Eye of Oquilua Island, located north of Lema Island. The boss can only be summoned once per channel at a time and will disappear after 30 minutes even if he is still engaged in combat.
New cannons and cannon balls have been added to the guild shop which must be used to defeat Kahn. The way that the cannons work has also been changed and now cannons can deal close range or long range shots. Close range shots will not go as far but have increase damage and can be overcharged by 3 points to deal extra damage, whilst long range shots deal less damage and can only be overcharged by 2 points. Overcharged cannons will take longer to recharge after shooting as well.
You can also enter rapid fire by pressing the X key. This weill allow y ou to reload faster and shoot is faster bursts.
When Kahn is summoned, lightning will start to flash and attack the player who is doing the most damage to Kahn. Black Crystal Seaweed will also spawn on the beach and these must be killed using your weapons. You will not be able to damage Kahn until these crystals have been destroyed and Kahn will start to regenerate his HP if they are not destroyed quickly. The crystals will start to summon sea monsters as well which will attack you. These monsters will disappear if you destroy the crystal.
Kahn will also make powerful attacks every so often and you will be warned when this is about to happen. You should take cover behind the rocks to avoid taking damage. There is no penalty for dying during the guild boss and if you resurrect at the nearest node you will resurrect on the island.
Once you’ve killed Kahn you can swim into the center to obtain your loot.

It’s time to take to the high seas in style as new boats have made their way to Black Desert. Whether you’re looking for a quick island hopper or looking to carry enough firepower to fire a whole through a sea monster, there is a boat for you.
The Epheria Cog is a ship capable of high speeds across the high seas. The Cog has 1 inventory slot which is less than ideal for many who are looking to start trading across the open seas. It also lacks offensive options as it has no cannons on its deck. But where the boat shines is speed. The boat is able to zip across the water and get you from point A to point B faster than nearly any other ship in it’s class. The Epheria Cog is relatively easy to craft, however it does have a limited duration (much like Fishing boats, rafts and row boats).
But if you are looking to start your sea faring adventures with a boat that is more permanent, the Bartali Sailboat is an excellent option. While the boat has been in the game for a while, this update brings the ability to upgrade your boats, including a way to turn the Bartali Sailboat into either an Epheria Frigate or an Epheria Sailboat. If you’re looking for an excellent starting boat, the Bartali Sailboat can be purchased from Proix in Velia for 10,000,000 silver, which will give you access to a boat that can be repaired, boasts 3 inventory slots and also has a couple of player controlled cannons on board!
Player Controlled Cannons: A player must interact with a cannon in order to use it. This means that a captain would need to leave the wheel in order to fire their cannons.
Captain Controlled Cannons: Available on any of the upgraded ships after the Epheria Sailboat/Frigate allows the captain to control both the boats movement and the cannons at the same time.
While the Epheria Sailboat and the Epheria Frigate are known entities, they also have new upgrade paths to make your boats even better. The Improved Epheria Sailboat and the Improved Epheria Frigate are side upgrades that slightly improve your ship, and give access to Captain controlled cannons meaning one player can man a ship on their own if they wish. The improved versions of the Sailboat and Frigate are great ways to begin your bartering or sea monster hunting journeys as they boast more fire power and quicker reload speeds on the cannons. Both are also relatively easier to obtain than their bigger upgrades as they do not require special materials earned through bartering.
The Epheria Caravel is the big upgrade to the Epheria Sailboat. It has more weight, more cabins and most importantly, more Inventory slots than the Epheria Sailboat/Improved Epheria Sailboat. It is one of the best ships for bartering due to the weight and inventory slots, but also packs a punch as it has the same cannons as the Improved Epheria Sailboat. Upgrading to the Caravel can be tough, as it requires both items from sea monster hunting and a lot of level 2,3 and 4 bartering materials. You will also need to upgrade all the Epheria ship enhancements (Old Prow, Old Plating, Old Cannon, Old Wind Sail) to + 10, so getting the Caravel may take time.
The Epheria Galleass is the big upgrade to the Epheria Frigate. The boat is faster and easier to handle than the Caravel, but the down side to it is that it has less Inventory. It also packs an absolute massive punch with 4 captain controlled cannons (similar to the Improved Frigate), and has 30 cabins so you can have a much larger crew of sailors on board. This boat is perfect for those looking to go Sea Monster Hunting or pirateering across the high seas. Again, much like the Caravel, the Galeass requires you to sea monster hunt and barter in order to obtain the materials for the upgrade.
The Epheria Caravel can then be upgraded into the Carrack (Advance) or the Carrack (Balance) , and the Epheria Galleass can be upgraded into the Carrack (Volante) or the Carrack (Valor) . These ships require a considerable amount of resources from both sea monster hunting and bartering, but they are the highest tier of ships available at this time. All the Carracks boast 9 powerful cannons to lay siege to anything unfortunate enough to be in the line of fire. The Carrack (Advance) and Carrack (balance) offer huge holds capable of holding enough items for even the most complex of barter routes, and have massive weight limits. The Carrack (Volante) and Carrack (Valor) are massive war ships built more for speed, while also packing massive punches when it comes down to fighting your enemies.
With ships now having cabins, you can hire sailors to help manage your boat through your Voyage. Sailors add different benefits depending on their personality (Speed, Acceleration etc) and consume cabin space depending on their type.
In order to begin hiring sailors, you will need to complete the quest ‘ [The Great Expedition] Oquilla’s Eye ’ that can be found in your suggested quest tab. Through this quest you will earn Sailing EXP, but most importantly for sailors is that you will be given your first sailor contract. This will then give you the ability to purchase more contracts to offer to other sailors.
Unlike workers who need to be rolled through a worker manager, Sailors are independent contractors and you will need to first find the sailor, then offer him a contract. Sailors appear as normal NPC’s in the following locations:
|
|
Velia | Inside the inn by Igor Bartali |
Port Epheria | On the beach by the beached whale |
Iliya Island | Next to the General Goods vendor on the island |
Sailors are easily recognized as they have the sailor name that appears above their heads, as well as their characteristics. These characteristics will let you know ahead of time what kind of stats that particular sailor can offer. Once the sailor accepts the contract, he will make his way to your boat where he will begin his new life under your captainship.
To hire a sailor, you will need to first purchase a contract for 3,000,000 silver, then talk to the sailor that you want to hire. Once the sailor accepts the contract, he will make his way to your boat where he will begin his new life under your captainship.
Sailor Upkeep
Being at sea is a perilous life. Sickness is a very real possibility on the waves, and as captain it is up to you to make sure that your sailors are healthy and in working shape. Sailors have a meter called condition, which works very similar to the way you fed workers to keep working. Unlike workers, sailors need a healthy diet in order to not get sick. The prefered meal for sailors is Chowder, made through the following recipe:
|
|
| Dried Pearl Oyster Flesh x1 |
Pepper x2 | |
Pork x2 | |
Milk x1 | |
Teff Bread x1 |
This dish is enough to keep even the biggest of sailors healthy and in good condition. However if these resources are scare, Sailors can also eat Raisin Bread, available from Wharf Managers or Islin Bartali at the Lunar Halo Inn. While not as filling as the chowder, sailors will happily chow down loaves of Raisin Bread to keep their spirits up!
If a sailor’s condition reaches 0, they can get sick. While sick, any bonus that they apply to the ship will be deactivated, so it is imperative to keep them healthy. If a sailor does come down with sickness, there is no need to throw him off the ship in the middle of the Ross Sea. Luckily alchemists of Black Desert have developed the ‘Elixir of Regeneration’ which helps cure this sickness. Through simple alchemy, you can combine the following ingredients:
|
|
| Mandragora Essence x1 (Purchased with Crow Coins) |
Essence of Magic Power x1 | |
Oil of Regeneration x1 | |
Troll Blood x2 | |
Grape x4 |
Once crafted, this elixir is enough to cure the sailing sickness which may plague your low condition workers!
Other Sailor Benefits
While you are out bartering and dealing with the NPC’s of each island, you can send out your Sailors to perform tasks. ' Supply ' option will restore some of the rations on board your ship while ' Explore ' sends the sailors off on the island to see what they can scavange. They can return with things like rations, repair or damage ships, or even find rare treasures. It does consume rations though, so it’s worth being smart about how to approach each individual island.
Remember that the May 27th Update for Black Desert Console will include new boats, the new life skill ‘Bartering’ and more! Make sure to check out the full update details once they are released.

At Philaberto Falasi of Port Epheria, you can exchange a Epheria Sailboat Design with Epheria Frigate design or vice versa. Requires quest, “[Daily] Falasi Family’s Kindness.”
Epheria Frigate Crafting at Port Epheria Shipyard
You can craft an Epheria Frigate at the Port Epheria Shipyard. (2nd floor, Epheria 3-5).
I can agree with you that this questline is not for me, just as all sea content. I'll just let this quest gather dust forever in my quest log and do something else, not necessarily in this game, because it obviously not friendly and not reasonable hard even at the beginner's level. There is no need to kill a player repeatedly few dozens of times before letting them to proceed with quest.
You won't get cannon controls until you upgrade either an Epheria Sailboat to a Caravel, or an Epheria Frigate to a Galleass. So, you got a ways to go.
- Inappropriate Words
- Inappropriate Content
- Real money trading
You *can* also go the Improve Sailboat or Frigate route which is only useful if you do not want to do ANY sea content before you get captain cannon controls. These upgrades are costly, but if you are an established lifeskiller on land, you may already have many of the goods required for the upgrade, and may be faster than going straight to Galleas/Caravel.
I lifeskilled for about 2 years before I touched sea content, preferring the solo game, I made my boat into the improved version with very little effort and additonal investment and I was MUCH happier for doing so. You will want a Galleas/Caravel for the additional sailor slots/weight, but I made the boats for a Vell alt and getting into sailing and don't regret spending the silver. I ended up loving ocean content instead of getting turned away like it seems OP may be.
I now have a Carrack, close to my second and still don't regret my decision.
If you are NA, would you like help killing the sea monsters? Have boat, will travel.
You get to use the cannons from the wheel with an improved Epheria sailboat however it is more cost effective to make the caravel.
While the Bartali sailboat can be upgraded, the materials suggest it was never meant to be. IMO the best option is to buy either a Epheria sailboat or a frigate (based on what Carrack you have plans to get), upgrading an Epheria sailboat/frigate to an improved one requires nearly half the mats of what you need for a Bartali.
His point was he needs the Sailboat/Caravel/whatever else because it's in the "Suggested" section of the questline. And hunting down the 5 monsters for it (the questline) is absolutely out of the question with a Bartali's Bathtub. Also, asking a friend or a guildie to help is also out of the question. Even if said boat along with the next iteration on it is designed to be used by a group not a solo player. It's a lot more unpleasant to handle both tasks of the Sailboat/Frigate, even if it was to shoot at the floating targets near the Velia Wharf.
Still, we're talking 1 Hungry Hekaru, 1 Young Ocean creature, 1 big boat that dies fast and 1 tiny boat that dies slow. In between, there are trips to islands, so opportunities to repair. Easy with a friend. Not so easy alone. +10 Bartali will suffice.
So, best option, buy a friend. Put a PO on the CM. 2nd best option, learn patience. You'll need it either for the day you'll cruise the story alone on your +10 Bartali. Or down the line, as you slowly progress your boat like everyone else did, without footstomping for special treatment.
I'm on EU, sorry.
Nevertheless, thanks everybody for input. I set up 2 nodes for excavating and put 2 Humans to work, so far after almost a week, I have ~30 Traces of Earth. I will be a helluvalot long run, so I think its best to just let it go.
But I'm sure we all agree this is completely failed design. A person can grind 1 hour (or even less) and buy brand new boat, other person is blocked for 6+ months trying to play the game as it was intended by dev.
Oh bummer. :-(
Another thing I wanted to mention: Lianna's alchemy daily gives a trace box that gives you 50 of a random trace, one of which can be Trace of Earth.
And I think Dalishain's random alchemy quest procs you have a choice of Trace of Earth as your reward.
Pre-ordering from the MP can also help speed the process along. Sure, there are a bunch of pre-orders, but they do actually fill.
Regarding the content, the whole Great Ocean update came out when grinding silver was A LOT lower. So much that people complained they were "forced" to barter because it was better money. PA just doesn't balance stuff across the entire game when they make changes to one thing, unfortunately.
