And just like that, summer is in full swing! This past Saturday afternoon, our Flying Scot fleet was victorious in their inter-club regatta against the Yacht Club of Stone Harbor. Congratulations to the entire fleet! That evening, we welcomed and got to meet many of our 85 new member families in style with an amazing party throughout the club. Near and dear to the Eshelman family, sailing camp started on Monday and the first MAYRA youth regatta of the season took place on Thursday. Congratulations to all of our travel team sailors, coaches, and parents for a great start to the season!

That, as they say, is just the beginning. We are taking it to the next level starting this weekend, with a fantastic lineup to properly kick off Independence Day week. We have our very first “Firepit Friday” when we’ll take full advantage of the amazing outside space on our south end freed up by moving the Flying Scots to the new north dock area. Come enjoy some live acoustic music, play a little cornhole, have a casual dinner on the picnic tables, relax on our new outdoor furniture, or just enjoy a cold drink. Hopefully the evening will be capped off by a signature AYC sunset. Saturday is our second Deck Party of the season with the return of Gypsy Wisdom ( www.gypsywisdom.com ). The fun continues Sunday with Jimmy Bannach in the afternoon and a visit from Queen Elsa & Princess Anna on Family Night.

There is so much more to come through the holiday week and the full month of July. We’ll continue to update you with weekly emails, and certainly feel free to call the club with any questions.

Elizabeth and I are very much enjoying our “Commodore Summer” thus far and hope you are too. As always, please do take a moment to say hello when you see us around the club, we love talking with our fellow members.

Sailing Fun for Everyone!

The 2023 AYC Summer Sailing Series is open to all Member families and AYC campers. It’s a great opportunity to sail, spectate, socialize and learn how to get involved with Sailing at AYC. Sailors of all ages are welcome and campers are strongly encouraged to join the weekend fun and take a shot at our Perpetual Season Awards.

Races are held for Optis, Sunfish, all Laser Rigs, RS Feva and 420s. Scoring and awards are divided by ages and divisions.

This year, the majority of our weekend regattas will be held on Sunday afternoons, with one Saturday morning. Rigging and registration will begin 45 minutes prior to the posted time of the Skipper’s meeting, with races and awards to follow.

Families and friends are welcome to watch the races from the Club decks, or hop on a boat and help on the course. Please contact Fleet Captains Joe & Linda Loeper at  [email protected]  for more information about the regattas or how you can get involved.

June was an incredible month for the AYC Flying Scot Fleet!

New sailors, old sailors, Hot Shot sailors, family and friends all participated in the Flying Scot events.

First up was the June 4 interclub races against Stone Harbor. There were 12 boats competing. Taking two first place finishes was the team of Sean Groskoph and Luke Follman. To further the good-hearted sibling rivalry, taking second place in the event was the team of Jake Groskoph and Jon Herr. Also finishing well was the team of Steve Miehl and Dave Helwig. AYC definitely won the day!

The following week-end (the day before Father’s Day) was the AYC Fun Race. The two races started in front of the club (with a canon signaling the start!), we raced to the government mark in front of the 30 th  Street bridge, then into the spit directly west of the club, then to the red government buoy directly in front of the Townsend inlet bridge, and then finished back in front of the club.

Showing great speed and tactics to win both races was the father- son team of Steve Kosloski and Tom Kosloski. With commanding second place finishes was Mitch Shiles, Linda Tozour and Keith Shiles. Dave Helwig raced with Amy Smolowitz, and I had the great Father’s Day present of racing with my wife Tara and daughter Aliza. Also on the course in the windy conditions was the new sailing team of Bill and Sue Connor. A great fun sailing race for all involved.

The final June race was the June 24 interclub race against Stone Harbor. I put out a challenge to the AYC Hot Shot sailors, and my challenge was answered by Jack Bolton and Max Miller who threw their hats in the ring and raced the AYC club boat. There were also numerous other AYC sailing instructors and AYC Hot Shot sailors on the course. There were 14 boats competing in 3 races.

Taking first place for the day with a 1, 1, 2 finish was Jeff Whiteway and Phil Berger. Note that the 3rd race was won by the team of Joseph Qualtier and Mike Mandell. Also doing well in the races was the former AYC commodore’s boat of John Groskoph and Frank Ciri. Again, AYC definitely won the day!

As can be seen from the above paragraphs, our fleet is made up of really good sailors, with really good competition, and with first place finishes divided among the various skippers and boats. It is an exciting time for our AYC Flying Scot fleet, which continues to grow, to welcome new sailors, and to give the Hot Shot sailors a forum for bragging rights!

The AYC Flying Scot club boat is being used for racing and for teaching sailing. The club boat is currently reserved, by different teams, for the following races: July 8, the Avalon Cup, and the MAYRA regatta. If you would like to reserve the club boat for any of the remaining races, please contact me at  [email protected] .

Also, if you are interested in racing with us, sailing for fun with us, patrolling the races on a motorboat, or being on the race committee, please contact me. We are a welcoming group, and would love for you to enjoy the racing and/or the fun sails with us.

We are looking forward to an excellent month of July with more interclub racing, fun sails, fun races, moon light sails, the Avalon Cup (Flying Scots in the ocean- Oh My!), and the regional MAYRA event. I look forward to seeing everyone at the club, or on the water during one of the upcoming events.

VERSION: 6.4

Club + Resort Chef

A Great Marriage

By Jerry Schreck | December 31, 2008

Executive Chef Peter Mark and the Avalon (N.J.) Yacht Club have had a wonderful relationship for 20 years-and he still gets to go fishing whenever he wants to.

The Avalon Yacht Club (AYC), located on the New Jersey shore south of Atlantic City, was formed in 1942 by a group that talked the borough of Avalon into selling a bayside location that had been used as a community dump site. With the country at war, the original membership had to find low-cost and discrete ways to get to and from their new social and dancing club (gas rationing was in place, and lights had to be kept dim at night all along the Eastern seaboard). A hay wagon was used to pick up and drop off members at designated spots, and a long, narrow path strung with faint lights marked the way to the clubhouse.

The camaraderie created by this unique original character of the club, combined with its prime location for both boating and social occasions (the site has won recognition for having “the best sunset at the Shore”), led to quick and strong growth of its reputation and membership. Today, AYC has 525 families among its membership, and its 9,000-sq. ft. clubhouse, which can accommodate 250 for a banquet, is known as a prime site for an intimate and special wedding—many brides from the Philadelphia area, in fact, happily prefer to schedule their big days at the club, even though it is over 60 miles from that city.

With busy spring and fall wedding seasons combining with boating-related activity that is concentrated between Memorial Day and Labor Day, AYC has long had a need for strong and steady direction of its food and beverage operation. Fortunately it found a perfect fit over 20 years ago in Executive Chef Peter Mark—for whom the club has provided great opportunities not only from the culinary side, but also to indulge his lifelong passion for sport fishing.

After completing another successful season at AYC, Peter was kind enough to take time to share some insights into the accomplishments and challenges that have been involved with managing this South Jersey landmark club through significant periods of growth and change since his arrival in the late 1980s.

Q Chef, what are some of the key components that have made you so successful at AYC for so many years? A Twenty years is a long time to be in one position. But I still find each season to bring an exciting new challenge, and I love what I do each and every day! Being available to the members is important to me. Getting to know their personal needs, and listening to and acting upon their suggestions, are key components to my success here. In addition, my success in part is due to my good working relationship with our club’s General Manager, Terry Thompson; together, our goal is to always do whatever we can to make AYC rock!

Q Your sous chef has also been a large part of your success at AYC.  What have you done to help nurture that relationship? A Jim Kelly has been with me now through three-plus seasons. He grew up in the business, and has run successful kitchens of his own. I involve Jim in all aspects of the yacht club business, because I value his opinion and welcome his expertise. Every day in the kitchen is a learning experience, and I believe we can always continue to learn from each other daily.

Q Overall, you give everyone on your culinary team free reign to create daily menu items.  How does this help the environment in the kitchen during the busy summer season, and how do you monitor what everyone does in the menu-planning process? A As I like to say, “A good staff contributes to the success of a chef!” The chefs that work the line during service are the backbone of the kitchen. I get my team involved because it makes sense to utilize their talents.  As well, their job then becomes more enjoyable, and it is a win-win situation for all. Letting them create their own featured menu items also makes them more accountable for their work. Therefore, a lot more “love” goes into every dish. My staff and I meet every Sunday afternoon to discuss their menu plans for the upcoming week. We then work out the logistics and presentation of everything that we will present to the members.

Q As you’ve grown, what adjustments have you made in how you manage your kitchen, and where you physically position yourself at service? A The recent needs of our members have surpassed the capability of the kitchen and its staff.  So in the off-season last year, we reconfigured our front line to better utilize existing cooking equipment, and also added new, more efficient refrigerated workstations. Because of these changes, we can now can keep more food prepared and available for service. Most importantly, the front-line chefs’ responsibilities have been restructured to allow service to flow more smoothly. As well, this past season I stepped away from just being on the cooking line, so I could also provide “hands-on help” to each member of my staff.  As you know, every station takes a huge hit during demanding service periods. By repositioning myself, I was better able to help anyone who needed assistance. This eased a lot of tension, knowing that I was there to lend a hand in making sure that every plate that left the kitchen was perfect.

Q Chef, your wedding business is phenomenal. Does it interfere with any member activity? A The wedding business does not interfere with the member activity, but sometimes it is a juggling act. On weekends we do about 250 covers a night, and most weddings are about 175 guests—so in a 9,000-sq. ft. clubhouse, it can certainly be a challenge when all of this goes on at once. The key is keeping the two separate and always striving to make members happy while at the same time presenting a memorable wedding package.

Q How do you foresee the current state of our economy affecting you next season at AYC? A We are already taking a hard look at all aspects of revenue and expense. Being a “family-oriented” club that revolves around a busy social calendar, my staff and I have much to ponder over the next several months. As we plan menus and strategies for the many events to come, our focus will be on ways to increase member participation. In other words, we will strive to create a unique dining and social experience so that our members will look forward to enjoying their club more often, and increase our year-end profits at the same time.

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Hello, Alexander Your comment is extremely important for us, thank you a lot for it. We are terribly sorry for your time that you`ve spent waiting your order and we have already taken actions to improve quality of our service and it would be realy... More

Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.
