Test Luffe 40.20 : Facelift of an exceptional cruising yacht

Hauke Schmidt

 ·  29.05.2023

The Code Zero gets the light Luffe going even in light winds and provides a lot of sailing fun

In this test:

  • Measured values Luffe

Technical data

  • YACHT rating

A very weak ground current and barely 10 knots of wind even with thermals - not exactly ideal test conditions, one would think. Most production boats would bob along sluggishly or have been running under engine for a long time. Of course, a racy performance cruiser should be able to get going even in such flat wind conditions. But how the Luffe 40.20 converts the light breeze into speed is astonishing - not to mention the spectacular steering feel.

But right from the start: The Danes didn't have much room for improvement with their 40-footer. Although around 18 years have passed since the Luffe 40.04 was presented, the design is considered an exceptional boat: stylish, fast and easy to sail, the elegant Dane combines the best virtues. So it was hardly surprising that the crew around shipyard founder and designer Oluf Jørgensen did not launch a completely new design with the 40.20 model in 2020, but instead refined the tried and tested.

From a new mould: Freeboard increased by five centimetres

The hull and parts of the deck are largely unchanged from the previous model, but a surprising number of screws have been tightened and new negative moulds have been built. Even though the sailing performance of the old Luffe left little to be desired, there was literally little room for improvement in the 40.04. The low freeboard required compromises in headroom below deck, so the shipyard increased it by around five centimetres. At first glance, that doesn't seem much. However, as the deck, including the cockpit, is raised over its entire surface, the necessary increase is created to allow more comfortable movement in the foredeck and aft cabin. The height in the centre of the saloon is now 1.85 metres. The toilet room has also been enlarged and can be fitted with a shower area. In addition, the door to the aft cabin can now be opened inwards, which has a positive effect on freedom of movement in the galley.

The cockpit layout has also been adapted. Instead of using a tiller or central steering wheel, the boat is now steered using two small wheels. This creates a clear passage to the rear. The transom has also been given an opening and a recess for the optional tailgate, which serves as a bathing platform and nestles flush into the stern, concealing the bathing step familiar from the previous model and making the lines appear even sleeker.

Only minor visual adjustments have been made to the superstructure. Windows and hatches are now flush-mounted, the typical Luffe silhouette with an almost open foredeck and wide running decks is unchanged, as is the high-quality and generously dimensioned fitting equipment. Much of what is offered on the options list or even as a racing package by the competition is standard with the Danes. In addition to the six stainless steel winches from Andersen, the self-tacking jib rail recessed into the superstructure, additional genoa rails and spinnaker equipment are also standard. The same applies to low-stretch Dyneema rigging, rod stays, 230-volt shore connection with charger, spring cleats and a sprayhood.

The Luffe 40.20 is more customisable than almost any other series yacht

However, this does not mean that you have little choice. Quite the opposite: even small series production can hardly be more customised than with Luffe. There are different methods to choose from for the construction of the hull and deck. The standard version is a sandwich made of polyester resin, E-glass and Divinycell foam. For a surcharge of around 5,600 euros, the hull is manufactured using a vacuum infusion process with a balsa wood core and epoxy resin, as in the test boat.

As well as saving 10 to 15 per cent in weight, the epoxy hull is completely osmosis-resistant and is also said to be more torsion-resistant. A further 5,000 euros will be charged for an infused deck. Always on board is the strong laminated steel frame for absorbing rigging and keel forces, which also serves as an attachment point for the hot eye.

Luffe Yachts has opted for a T-shaped composite keel made from a GRP fin and slim lead torpedo. Compared to the previous model, which was fitted with an L-keel, a new, lower-drag profile is now used. The ballast remains unchanged at 2.5 tonnes, but the new keel configuration ensures a lower centre of gravity. The standard draught is 2.08 metres, but alternatives between 1.85 and 2.25 metres are possible by varying the GRP fin.

45-square-metre squarehead large from North Sails

The modern look with twin wheels and squarehead mainsail is certainly pleasing. However, in view of the well-known good sailing characteristics of the previous model and identical hulls, the question naturally arises as to the added value of the facelift.

As mentioned at the beginning, the wind conditions on the test day were very flat and anything but predictable due to individual thermal breaks on both sides of the Little Belt. When leaving Kolding, the wind indicator at the masthead showed barely 6 knots. It goes without saying that in these conditions the 106 per cent genoa, which is around four square metres larger, is used instead of the self-tacking jib. It can be sheeted extremely tightly using the furler.

The impressive 45-square-metre squarehead from North is a real turbo. Even without a traveller, it can be twisted very nicely so that the current is evenly applied from the boom to the top. In this set-up, the Luffe reaches wind speed in just under 6 knots of wind at the cross - and with an apparent wind angle of a spectacular 26 degrees. This results in tacking angles of no less impressive 76 degrees.

Luffe 40.20: Concentrated steering is rewarded by endorphin release

The squarehead sail costs around 5,400 euros and can be ordered for both the standard aluminium rig and the optional carbon mast. So that it can be ridden, the central backstay is replaced by top backstays. Thanks to the 20-degree swept spreaders, the rig remains upright even without the backstays.

In order to keep the headstay sag to a minimum, however, they should be set at the latest when the wind picks up. This increases the manoeuvring effort, as they use the genoa winches and are therefore not within the helmsman's reach. Instead, you have direct access to the mainsheet from the wheel. It is driven as a German Cupper system and operated via two powerful 46 mm winches. The combination of standard main and self-tacking jib makes the Luffe very suitable for single-handed sailing. If the backstays have to be trimmed, as on the test boat, an autopilot is required for single-handed sailing.

More astonishing than the performance data is the ease with which the Luffe can be steered through the unsteady wind field. The rudder reacts extremely directly and, despite the low pressure in the boat, provides just the right amount of feedback that you need to feel the edge of the wind. The steering wheels, which seem quite small at first glance, work very well; they are recessed into the cockpit coaming and positioned very far out so that the helmsman has a clear view of the sails.

Lightweight timber below deck

Of course, concentration is required to make the most of every change in wind, but the effort is immediately rewarded with a rush of endorphins when the Luffe accelerates noticeably while other yachts have long been "cruising up" the fairway under engine power.

Once in the Little Belt, the next stage of escalation follows: the genoa is replaced by the Code Zero. 41 additional square metres have the desired effect. Instead of just under 6 knots, we were travelling at more than 7 knots. In addition, individual thermals briefly bring winds of around 12 knots. Each of these dark patches lifts the corners of the mouth and gives us a sprint to over 8 knots. Trimming is hardly necessary, it is enough to follow the rapidly decreasing wind angle with a small turn of the wheel. This turns the typical thermal stop-and-go sailing with the Luffe into go-and-gooooo sailing.

The corners of your mouth stay up even when you go below deck, at least if you have an appreciation for high-quality, handcrafted woodwork. With the eye-catching combination of light-coloured Douglas fir veneer and dark wenge bulkheads, the test boat will certainly not appeal to all tastes.

Slim lines of the Luffe 40.20 delimit the interior

However, there are almost no limits to the choice of wood, as the shipyard manufactures the plywood - or, in the case of the Luffe 40.20, the sandwich panels - itself. All bulkheads have a lightweight balsa wood core and are laminated to the hull and deck. The remaining fittings are made of an even lighter foam sandwich. The lightweight construction remains concealed thanks to elaborate edging and laminated finishes. To see the material, you have to dismantle the hot air outlets of the heater and inspect the drill holes.

It's a similar story with the wegerung. It can be found not only in the visible areas, but also in the lockers. Such attention to detail is otherwise only found in shipyards such as Faurby or Linjett.

In view of the slim lines, the interior volume of the Luffe can hardly keep up with other yachts of around twelve metres in size; it is more like that of a 36-footer. The additional headroom does little to change this. However, it does help to alleviate a few tight spots, such as the aft cabin door that opens to the galley or the cramped washroom. For the intended crew size of two adults and two guests or children, the freedom of movement is fine - especially as the berth sizes are quite comfortable. The owner's cabin forward in particular offers a pleasant ambience and a good berth. There is not quite as much space aft. However, the berth itself is even larger, so that two adults can sleep very comfortably, and the height above the berth itself under the cockpit is generous. Both compartments offer storage space in well-organised and ventilated lockers.

Customised layouts

The narrower passageways in the saloon and galley even have advantages at sea: You can find a foothold everywhere. Solid handles also ensure safety.

In addition to the standard layout with one fore and one aft compartment, there is also a three-compartment version with four aft berths. Customised layouts are possible as long as the positions of the structural bulkheads allow. One example is the layout on the test boat, whose starboard aft locker has been converted into a makeshift locker. This means it can be used either as a sail storage space or a berth. Access is then through a loophole with a sliding door from the toilet room.

Due to the shipyard's manufacturing approach, such customisations are common and the additional costs are manageable. Of the 70 units built of the predecessor model, practically no two boats are the same.

Price of the service: This is how much the Luffe 40.20 costs

Manageable additional costs make the Luffe 40.20 far from a bargain. Compared to large 40-foot models, the base price of 327,250 euros is already relatively high. Compared to other Scandinavian-style performance cruisers, however, the Luffe is rather favourably priced. Even the basic version of an X 4.0 costs considerably more, and this does not change when the comfort price is adjusted for equipment. And that's even if the additional costs for the Luffe's infusion design are taken into account. The situation is similar in comparison to the J/122 or Faurby 400.

Of course, the price of the Luffe can be driven up considerably depending on the equipment. The test boat built from epoxy resin with complete teak deck, Kohler rig, electric winches, tailgate, customised fittings, metallic paintwork and a few other extras adds up to over 583,000 euros. However, this also applies to the other yachts, provided that the corresponding customisations are available at all.

In terms of sailing performance and easy handling with a small crew, the Luffe is second to none of its competitors. And the careful modernisation has not detracted from its elegant appearance.

Luffe 40.20

Plan drawing of the Luffe 40.20

With their 40 feet, the Danes didn't have much room for improvement. Although a good 16 years have passed since the presentation of the Luffe 4004 (see test YACHT 16/05), the design is considered an exceptional boat: chic, fast and easy to sail, the elegant Dane combines the best of virtues. So it is hardly surprising that the crew around shipyard founder and designer Oluf Jørgensen is not launching a completely new design with the 40.20 model, but is refining what has been tried and tested.

The hull and parts of the deck are largely unchanged from the previous model, but a surprising number of screws were turned and extra-new negative molds were built. Because even if the sailing performance of the old Luffe left little to be desired, there was little room for improvement in the 4004 in the literal sense of the word. The low freeboard required compromises in headroom below deck; therefore the shipyard has increased it by around five centimeters. That doesn't seem like much at first. The deck including the cockpit is raised over the whole area, but the necessary increase is created to move more comfortably in the foredeck and aft chamber. The cockpit layout has also been adapted. Instead of using a tiller or a central steering wheel, two small wheels are now used to steer. That creates a free passage.

The modern look with double wheels and square head mainsail is pleasing. In view of the known good sailing properties of the previous model and identical hulls, the question of the added value of the facelift naturally arises.

A Day at Luffe Yachts.

  • April 8th, 2016
  • On Location

It was one of my big wishes when spending a couple of days here in Denmark coming true to have a visit to Luffe Yachts. Well, apart from actually being able to sailing one which was unfortunately not possible (but will hopefully made good for in the future to come). It is a rainy Monday in April and weather is far from being perfect for a sailing cruise. Apart from the fact that I would love to sail one I was very happy to being invited to have a look at the yard where one of the – to my mind – most beautiful yachts come to life: Kolding/Denmark.

Thanks for letting me take a look.

Kolding is a small town in the Baltic coast of Jutland, some 50.000 inhabitants do earn their income in the metalworking and textile industries, do profit from Kolding as being a traffic junction for West-Denmark but apart from that the small town feels like all of Denmark feels: Pleasantly under-overcrowded, laid-back and kind of disconnected from the hustle of a bristling city like Hamburg where I left hours earlier for Kolding.

The female molds of the Luffe models are stored outside.

Luffe Yachts is situated well outside the city and kilometers away from the shores of the Baltic in the midst of a huge industrial park. A hall in black with a huge logo. That´s all one can see when nearing the yard. Outside I can find the female molds of the yacht models Luffe is offering: Currently six types from the all-new Luffe 36 of 36 feet to the biggest model, the Luffe 48 can be ordered. Knocking at the door, a friendly boatbuilder sawing some mahogany stops working to open the door. He nods. Lets me in. Goes back to his saw.

Luffe 45 – an impressive Boat

I enter the big hall from the woodworks-shop and behold: Right over my head a grey painted Luffe 45 rests majestically on her jack. It´s a stunning look. Robert, who originally invited me to see the yard welcomes me, shows me around, points toward the boats and says: “It´s all Luffes. But except this one over there – we are just maintaining the ship – don´t show her …”, as if I weren´t be able to distinguish the beautiful lines of an original Luffe yacht. He leaves me to rejoin his work in the laminating-shop again. I remain alone. Free to see everything I want. I roam about under the massive hull of the 45 feet Luffe. I could spend hours here …

This is how I would imagine my own garage ...

Oluf Jörgensen founded the yard back in 1973. That´s six years before I was born. He started to build coastal sailing craft with success and became addicted to designing yachts. Colleagues of mine describe Oluf as being a bit shy and humble when ask to talk about is boats and later I will get a glimpse of what they meant as well. Back to the boat I notice her sharp bow – a trademark of Scandinavian built sailing vessels .

The sharp bow is a Luffe trademark

Oluf Jörgensen wants to create ships to perform. That´s his aim. That´s a s simple – and as complicated – as it s. It´s his aim for a speedy ship that drives him to design slim but fast yachts. A clear countermotion to the wide and beamy boats built for the charter market to offer luxurious accommodation over sailing qualities. A Luffe is a fast cruiser. But a cruiser it remains: My own sailing instructor used to sail a Luffe and he is full of praise on her rigity, high building quality and her stylish, classy interior design.

The huge yet wonderful Luffe 45

The freeboard of a Luffe is low, her center of gravity deep and her beam limited: A Luffe is hard to beat in any wind. When taking a look at her helm, the Luffe 45 offered a clean cockpit layout, two steering wheels with plenty of room to maneuver around and no risk of getting tangled up in the mainsheet traveler. Though this particular boat would be a size too big for myself, I really admired her lines.

The Beauty of Ships

It´s this admiration of ships and the love to everything connected to sailing which makes a Luffe so beautiful in my eyes. I´m a bit sad because my most beloved of their current line, the Luffe 43 MK II wasn´t around when I visited the yard, I could clearly imagine the passion put into every single ship manufactured here. Clearly, this yard has an output of merely 15 yachts a year, nevertheless – or just because of that? – I could determine the high standards by every employer to be put into every single boat. They simply love building boats here.

These lines and curves are beautiful. Indeed.

Haven´t I said it? It´s a small yard. No match for a Hanse or Jeanneau. But that´s the niche where a Luffe can exist in. A boat will be built just by order. No production in advance here. By ordering the boat, the owner in being can determine almost everything by himself when it comes to interior design. It´s the mindset of Luffe that a sailing vessel – especially when on a longer cruiser – should be fast first, but secondly it should be as comfortable as possible. So, by determining the lines and thus the sailing abilities of the ship, Oluf says that the owner should be free to choose what the interior should look like.

A Luffe owner can choose from a variety of high grade wooden material

There are virtually unlimited combinations of all the high grade lumbers you can imagine, leaving Teak and Mahogany only second-choice. That in mind I remember having browsed the advertisements of used Luffe yachts and wondering why not a single yacht resembles the look of the next one: That´s because there really isn´t such thing as a standard-version here. A Luffe owner is some kind of an individualist.

Not more than 6 boats at once can be built here

Which brings us to Oluf Jörgensen again. He suddenly appears to stand behind me while I was taking pictures, shook my hands and welcomed me. Judging from his whole appearance he wasn´t really interested in explaining everything to me and showing off: That´s what my colleagues where telling about him. A humble, shy person, very warm and welcoming but a kind of self-contained. His work does speak for itself. I think, that´s what he wanted to tell me.

No CAD and high tech in sight: This is pure handcrafted work.

We parted and I went around in the wood-shop, looking at construction manuals, tons of patterns and calibers for the interiors of the different models, wood-samples and general plans of Luffe yachts. The smell of the wood reminded me of my own boat when I sailed her: Lumber and varnish, smell of Diesel and a slight odor or epoxy. This is when the new Luffe 3.6 on the yard came into sight.

The all-new Luffe 3.6

I do own a 33 feet cruiser . Just 3 feet more is merely a meter in overall length so I am familiar with this size. I thought. 33 feet of the mid Seventies is nothing compared to a modern ship – even when looking at a comparably slim yacht like the Luffe. This yacht offers plenty of space though.

The Luffe 3.6 is the smallest yet newest of the Fleet

And she´s a true beauty by herself too. The classy look is achieved my her inclined bow – some kind of a trade mark by Luffe yachts in a world where most of the yachts have straight bows to achieve longer waterlines and thus create more space for the owner´s cabins in the front of the vessel ship. A 3.6 has a bow overhang of 1.1 meters. Also her elaborate woodworks like the real Teak decking: Handcrafted lumber of the highest quality is also a thing that contributes to the classy “shiplike” style of a Luffe. And this is with the smallest of the yachts too.

The 3.6 is a very spacious boat - albeit her "only" being 36 feet long.

I have the chance to take a look into an unfinished hull still on the assembly line without the upper part being assembled: I can clearly see the compartments of the ship: A large cabin in the aft-section slightly wider than the ship´s half, vis-à-vis a big locker on the starboard side. There´s also a fully equipped head, a large enough galley and a saloon in which crew and passengers can and will enjoy themselves both underway and tied up to the pier sides.

The 3.6 is dwarfed by her bigger sisters - yet she offers plenty of space inside.

Same here: I really admired the passion that seems to go into the wooden parts of the boat´s interior. I remember the instructor-skippers at my sailing school waxing lyrical about their “old” Luffe which – in their words – would not only sail like hell but also exuding the passion of seafaring adorably nice. And here it all begins …

A sharp bow , fine lines as well.

A Luffe 3.6 will be outfitted with a self-tacking jib to make singlehanded sailing a no brainer. All halyards and sheets are easily reachable to make riding this boat pure fun. I particularly liked the view on her unfinished stern section where I could spot the shaft for housing the rudder: Strongly, very strongly built and beside the fact that the aft section of the boat is entirely sealed off by a watertight bulkhead to the front there was a smaller box which will be made watertight as well: That´s built-in safety I guess.

The aft section with the thick rudder shaft´s housing.

The 3.6 will – as well as all the other models – be equipped with all the three standard keels by wish of the owners which will be bolted to a strong zinc-coated steel frame for stiffness and rigidity (as well as for safety again). With a displacement of 5.3 tons this boat has a ballast of due 1.96 tons: Plenty of righting moment and stiffness to hold her straight in upwind and gusty conditions. That´s all coming with a price tag attached: Some 170.000 Euros in her standard specification without VAT is hefty entrée to the world of Luffe. But I´m sure the quality is worth it.

Sharp Bow, Slim Body … that´s a Luffe

Switching from the 3.6 to her bigger sisters I can spot a 40.04 as well on her stands in the big hall. Right next to her even bigger sibling, the Luffe 45 she resembles what I admire at Scandinavian yacht design  most: Slim lines, a sharply drawn bow and a slender stern to make her hull seaworthy even to ride out the harshest waves as well as to make her fast.

Made to go fast.

“Length runs” is a long known rule in shipbuilding and here at Luffe they do have their very own interpretation of this. Where most brands based in Germany for example are going a way to appeal to a more comfort-oriented customer (mostly the average charter-client) with high freeboards, a load of volume for the inside to have huge cabins and a number of heads, it´s a bit different here at Luffe. And you can see it by just looking at the boats themselves.

The keels are mounted to a rigid steel-frame in the hulls

They do even look fast: The bow, the stern, a well-shaped hull, long and thin rudders and the cockpits of course. There are wider cockpits. There are cockpits this big and spacious where one might host a barbeque or rave-party. Not so with Luffe: The layout here is meant for having a safe and secure place for the crew to drive the boat, steer her and have everything at when where expected and needed. It´s a cockpit for a sailing boat. Not a patio for big party at pier side Saint Tropez …

Just one word: Classy

Everything is crafted beautifully. Handbuilt quality: Also here, the hull will be built in E-Glass and reinforced polyester with a foam core. Charging additional budgets, everything is also available as an Osmosis-safe Epoxy-version vacuum infused with a 15 millimeter balsa core for extra stiffness and a weight-saving of up to 10 per cent. Vacuum infusion is an option for all the models Luffe offers.

Luffe performs well at Regattas

Going from the big assembly hall to the molding facility I witness the treatment of a deck structure: Holes will be drilled, portholes are to be cut out and the decking is ready to be applied. I can see no more than 5 people working at the facility, no rushing, no hectic – just friendly faces, everyone seeing me will nod and give me a smile. It seems as they do not just have fun in doing what they do but to take pride in their work.

Dear Santa …

I leave Luffe with mixed feelings I must admit. On the one hand there you have them – adorable handcrafted sailing yachts, capable and well known for their high performance in terms of sailing capabilities, speed and rigidity as well as for their classy design and timeless appearance. After all, a Luffe is extremely stable in her value. Used Luffes will be sold at high prices even now that the overall price level for used yachts is very low.

Which one to take ... if I could?

On the other hand I feel some kind of deep sympathy or let´s call it sorrow for this little yard in Denmark: It is so small, so few yachts leave this facility which means so few people will enjoy these wonderful ships. Partially due to the fact that the pricing for these boats is far beyond everything I myself and probably most of you will ever be able to pay for, partially because of the common trends towards cheaper, faster built production boats for an average sailor who is not a thorough salt anymore, but a part-time sailor during the summer, a snowboarder in winter together with a number of other spare time activities he might enjoy.

I am thankful for having got the chance to take a look at this small marvel, the beauty of the boats in all states of their making and to meet the people behind that magical sounding name Luffe. If you spend a holiday time on Jutland – come forward to take an hour´s drive to the small town of Kolding to have a look at Luffe as well. I am sure, you will be as welcome as I was here.
