‘Skyfall’ yacht returns to Wrightsville Beach

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. (WECT) - “Skyfall,” a 191-foot-long yacht, is back at Wrightsville Beach and has caught the eye of residents in the area.

Named after the 2012 James Bond film, it has, among other things, a plunge pool, jacuzzi, wine cellar and full entertainment system.

SKYFALL Yacht – Alluring $33M Superyacht

This archetypical yacht owes its luxurious interior design to Patrick Knowles .

The urban contemporary styling highlights huge, illuminated spaces with an intricate blend of wood designs from Honduran mahogany, European maple burl, Australian lacewood, Wenge, and exquisitely etched glasses. 

As you enter from the aft to the main deck salon, guests will be greeted with a unique foyer pseudo wine cellar that leads directly to the spacious entertainment room with comfortable seating and a formal dining room for a dozen people. 

She is also equipped with a sky lounge that is packed with large windows for panoramic viewing, a 60-inch flat-screen television, a game table, and a Tiger’s eye bar. 

She is defined by her luxurious fittings, generous layouts, and exceptional attention to detail.

Specifications

The SKYFALL yacht is 59.71m long with a 2.59m beam and 2.59m draft. She is powered by 2 Caterpillar engines with 3384 horsepower each.

She has a cruising speed of 13.5 knots and can go up to 21 knots at maximum speed. At normal cruise speed, she has a range of 4600 nautical miles. 

SKYFALL also boasts an advanced stabilization system with anchor stabilizers that gives onboard comfort whether at anchor or on rough waters. 

Accommodation

The SKYFALL yacht can accommodate 12 guests in her six lavish staterooms and an additional 13 cabin crews to make sure every guest’s need is catered.

The master staterooms are designed to be split-level. The lower spaces house the lounge, private study, and Jacuzzis, while the loft space is where guests can comfortably rest in the VIP beds opposite the large windows that offer ambient light and a 270-degree viewing experience. 

Her amenities include tenders, wave runners, sea bobs, paddleboards, pedalboards, a swimming pool with jellyfish net, water skis, wakeboard, inflatable toys, a trampoline, and snorkeling gears, among others.

This all-aluminum unique SKYFALL yacht is designed to have a shallow draft allowing her to wade in shallow waters. 

Her outdoor living spaces showcase an exquisite sun deck where guests can enjoy the panoramic view while relaxing.

She is also equipped with a hot tub, splash pool, and luxurious sun pads. 

She was bought for $36.95 million and was listed for sale again in October 2014 for $36.5 million.

So, who owns that mega yacht docked at Wrightsville Beach?

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – If you haven’t seen it, chances are you’ve heard about it. Skyfall, one of the largest yachts to ever cruise into Wrightsville Beach is the talk of the town.

So, who owns that huge yacht? His name is Roy Carroll.

Carroll, who lives in Greensboro, is the owner of The Carroll Companies, a real estate development firm valued at about $3 billion. He’s no stranger to the Wilmington area. Carroll is the developer of The Avenue , the planned $250 million project located on Military Cutoff Rd. The upscale development will feature luxury living, high-end shops, restaurants and a Westin Hotel. Construction was put on hold because of the pandemic, but is expected to begin this year.

While Skyfall is a luxury charter yacht, Carroll brought it to the Wrightsville Beach Marina for a couple weeks for personal use.

“Skyfall is entertaining friends and family for a couple of weeks prior to departing to the Mediterranean,” Carroll says. “Skyfall will take two and a half to three weeks to reach her destination of Croatia.”

The 191-foot long yacht is booked for charters in the Mediterranean through September. Clearly, it’s going to folks with lots of money. The going rate for a week on Skyfall is $400,000 plus approximately another $100,000 for fuel dockage and tips, according to Cameron Sieradzan, the media director for The Carroll Companies.

Yes, Skyfall is named after the 2012 James Bond movie. The previous owner reportedly paid a pretty penny to use the name. When Carroll purchased the yacht, the name went with it.

“We thought about renaming the yacht, but the name has stuck,” Carroll says. “Plus, we already have the yacht’s theme song.”

Skyfall has 15 crew members and can accommodate up to 14 guests. The yacht features a wine cellar, two hot tubs, a masseuse, two chefs and a helipad that converts to a basketball court.

Carroll also owns Rhino, a 154-foot yacht that will arrive in Wrightsville Beach in a few weeks before heading to New England for the summer.

Skyfall will leave Wrightsville Beach on June 8.

What yachting industry insiders have to say about Jeff Bezos' superyacht

• Jeff Bezos' yacht , which reportedly cost $500 million to build, completed its first year at sea.
• The superyacht, Koru, was a frequent topic of conversation at the Palm Beach boat show.
• Here's what industry insiders think about the vessel.

It's been just about a year since Koru, Jeff Bezos ' $500 million megayacht, set sail from the Oceanco shipyard in the Netherlands, capturing the attention of yachting insiders and land dwellers alike.

Even after her first season at sea, the 127-meter ship is still one of the most talked about vessels among those in the know — and not just for the busty figurehead on its prow, which many have wrongly speculated is based on Bezos's fiancée . Koru was a hot topic at the annual Palm Beach International Boat Show, where the yachts of other billionaires were on display for sale or charter.

The overwhelming response from those Business Insider spoke to was awe, with many praising her unique design, commenting on her immense size, or remarking that they'd been lucky enough to see her up close.

"It's absolutely beautiful," said Federico Rossi, the COO of luxury yachtbuilder Rossinavi.

Still, due to the small size of the industry — and the fact that privacy is paramount in the yachting community — even those who complimented Koru mostly did not want to go on record in order to protect professional relationships.

"That thing's amazing," one such superyacht expert told BI. "It's very well done in terms of craftsmanship."

Unlike many other megayachts, Koru, which media billionaire Barry Diller's Eos inspired, is designed as a sailing yacht. That bucks the current trend of more severe-looking explorer boats — though Koru's 75-meter support vessel Abeona is of a more typical style,

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," the superyacht expert also told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Like most other megayachts, Koru is powered by her engines, which are reportedly innovative in their use of a kinetic energy recovery system. Industry experts, therefore, pointed out that her sails are more for looks than anything else — but that still works in her favor, with many praising her overall aesthetic appeal.

"It's stunning," added a captain who has worked on several megayachts. He said he'd seen Koru in St. Barts, a favorite spot of Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez , over the holidays.

"There are definitely uglier boats out there," one yacht architect said. "It's not like it's shaped like his rocket," he jokily added, referring to the phallic design of Blue Origin's New Shephard .

Some, though, think the yacht is a bit excessive — which is saying something in a world where bigger is better and $250 million is a normal amount to spend.

"That's over the top. That's an insanely ridiculous boat," a longtime broker who favors discretion said. It's a "whole big show."

And the expert who praised the yacht's craftsmanship balanced his admiring comments by saying Koru's liberal use of teak — a wood traditionally used for yacht decks — was "bizarre."

The material has gained a bad reputation in the industry in recent years, as it typically comes from Myanmar, a country with a checkered human rights record. Plus, it takes a long time to grow, leading to deforestation.

Many shipyards have now turned to alternatives, like bamboo or plantation-grown teak, in their pushes toward sustainability. Bezos' team did not respond to BI's question about the origin of the deck's wood.

Teak or not, the yachting industry isn't generally known for being all that environmentally friendly — or indeed lowkey, so many who BI talked to didn't buy into the idea that Koru is "too much."

"If this is genuinely Jeff's dream come true, then great," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage Fraser Yachts, said. "I'm genuinely happy for him, and I'm happy for the people who got the opportunity to have employment to work on that."

And Bezos, of course, isn't the only billionaire with a stunning yacht . Billionaires like Jerry Jones and Bernard Arnault have also, at times, turned heads with their boats.

Most recently, insiders have tied Mark Zuckerberg to a 118-meter ship named Launchpad . It's the latest superyacht to capture the yachting world's attention.

So, as she sets sail for her debut summer season, Launchpad may take Koru's place as the main yacht on everyone's radar this year.

Emily Henry fans had a field day last week when the author shared a St. Patrick’s day selfie of “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri and “Normal People’s” Paul Mescal .

While Edebiri posted the original image to her Instagram, it was reposts from Henry and screenwriter Yulin Kuang that made fans start to assume that the actors may have been cast in one of the films being adapted from Henry’s romance books: “People We Meet on Vacation,” for which Kuang is writing the screenplay; “ Beach Read ,” with Kuang writing and directing; or “Book Lovers,” being developed by the company that produced Mescal’s “Aftersun.”

“I can’t confirm or deny anything with casting for any movie. I will say that those are two of my favorite ‘Irish’ actors,” Henry told Variety . (Mescal is Irish; Edebiri is not — but the internet likes to joke that she is thanks to a running gag she keeps up .)

But Henry has clearly spent some time imagining them as one of the couples she’s written.

When asked if she thinks Edebiri and Mescal would be a good fit for any of the films, Henry said, “I do. I think that they would be amazing. I actually saw them being discussed [online] for several different roles — and I definitely have a favorite. But it’s fun, because different adaptations would either have one of them playing to type, or one of those adaptations would have them both playing to type, and one of them would have them both playing against type. It’s an interesting thing. I mean, they’re great, they could do anything.”

Scripts for “Beach Read,” “People We Meet on Vacation” and “Book Lovers” have yet to be completed, but Henry says she hopes “there’ll be stuff to talk about really soon.”

“It’s so different than I would have thought to approach it. It feels like a big swing, which I am all about because I think the worst thing that a movie can be is boring and mediocre. If we’re doing this, let’s really go for it,” Henry says. “Yulin is working on the the next draft now, and it should be ready to do more with very soon. It feels really different and special.”

Henry adds that the “People We Meet on Vacation” screenplay “has gone through a lot of different drafts,” but because Kuang’s own debut novel comes out next month, new drafts for both “People We Meet” and “Beach Read” should “be ready very soon because she needs to get them off her plate.” She also adds that she speaks with “People We Meet” director Brett Haley “at least weekly” about the project.

Then there’s the “Book Lovers” movie, for which Henry says a draft by writer Sarah Heyward is now in the “fine-tuning” stage.

About potential screen adaptations of her 2023 novel “Happy Place” or “Funny Story,” which releases on April 23, Henry only shared that she hopes to have details “really soon” and that she’s open to exploring television instead of film: “I’m doing my Lucille Bluth wink,” she jokes.

While Henry says she suspects that all three of her current film adaptations will be “very different” from each other, she does hope tp create a signature aesthetic across the board — much like the cohesive cover design across all five of her books.

“Something that I have stressed with all of my producers and directors is the need for a very distinct sense of coziness in the actual setting,” Henry says. “The characters can still be messy, the conflicts can still happen, but setting and sets are so important and are often what make me want to rewatch something again and again. Nancy Meyers’ writing and directing is lovely, but her sets are what make you want to be inside of that movie. Same thing with Nora Ephron — it’s Nora Ephron’s New York, not quite real New York, and it feels so magical and aesthetic. When you have that feeling of the first nip of fall, you want to watch ‘You’ve Got Mail.’ That’s something they all know I’m really big on.”

“I trust the directors that we have, and I think that they really get it,” she continues. “They also know that I’m always watching my readers and I want them to be happy. So in my involvement in every single adaptation, my main goal is to represent the readers’ interests.”
