I had CCYC strip the old bottom paint to the glass, and then start over with barrier coat and new antifouling. They did a good job. Originally, we were going to have CCYC hire a subcontractor to wet sand blast off the old layers, but that fell through. Smitty offered to use power sanding at the same price Even though it took more hours than expected, he honored the quoted price. They are able to haul out catamarans up to about 25 feet beam.

The Route Less Traveled: Boating Virginia’s Eastern Shore

  • February 1, 2020
  • ESVA Places to Go , On the Water , Things to Do

Boaters who typically head down along the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay or end their Intracoastal Waterway trip in North Carolina are missing out on charming harbor downs and two pristine coastlines on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

Harbor towns like Cape Charles, Onancock, Saxis, Chincoteague and Wachapreague on the 70-mile Virginia Chesapeake Bay coastline, have growing numbers of restaurants, shops and hotels just steps from the town harbors.

Virginia’s Eastern Shore is only three hours by car from Washington D.C., but it’s a world apart. Settled in the early 1600’s, the region was isolated from mainland America for four hundred years, until the convenience of rail, then cars, made it a bit more accessible. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel connected the southern tip to mainland Virginia in the mid-60s.

Things have changed slowly on the Eastern Shore of Virginia over the centuries. Today the culture is a rich mix of families with roots that are hundreds of years old and an influx of escapees from the big cities to the north.

In some ways, modern America has barely touched down on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Most of the hotels, B&Bs, restaurants and shops are locally owned. Cell phone connectivity can be spotty, and nobody is in much of a hurry. In other ways, the future of America is here — NASA has been launching missiles at Wallops Island since 1945, and watermen are using cutting-edge science in their aquafarming outfits.

Just southeast of Tangier Island, Onancock is approached along the five-mile Onancock Creek lined with majestic homes. Once you dock, stop in at the harbor office and pick up information about the town, including a walking tour guide. Go no further than a few steps to  Mallards on the Wharf  for a meal overlooking the water or walk up the hill to the town center and you’re at one of the Virginia Eastern Shore’s culinary crossroads. Choose from an upscale bistro, an Italian kitchen, an Irish pub, a casual cafe open for breakfast and lunch, and two dinner-only boutique inns: The Inn and Garden Cafe and the  Charlotte Inn and Restaurant.  In the morning, stop in at the Corner Bakery for their signature donuts.

Hunt for treasure at boutiques, art galleries and antique stores and pick up some treats at the North Street Market .  Enjoy a short walk to  Ker Place , an elegant Federal-period estate, and the Eastern Shore of Virginia Watermen’s Museum and Research Center . Both tell the story of America from its earliest days. If you’re in the mood for a night on land, B&Bs are tucked away down neighborhood streets. You can catch the latest movie at the quaint 1950s  Roseland Theater ; it has a state-of-the-art digital sound system. Or take in a live show at the North Street Playhouse .

Pull out your walking tour guide and head across the bridge nearest the harbor to Mount Prospect, a neighborhood overlooking Onancock Creek and enjoy the quiet, tree-lined streets anchored by the circa 1790 Prospect Hill estate.

Life in Onancock centers around the water. Explore Onancock Creek with the Burnham Guides , either on a guided paddler or in a kayak rented from their shop. If you’d like someone else to take the helm, take a laid back two-hour cruise with Onancock Sailing Adventures and learn more about the area.

If you haven’t been to Tangier Island yet, catch the Tangier ferry  May to October right at the Onancock harbor.

CAPE CHARLES

Near the southern tip of Virginia’s Eastern Shore on the Chesapeake Bay, Cape Charles is a relaxed, cheerful beach town with a free beach that’s steps from the town harbor and bustling town center. Breakfast or lunch at the Cape Charles Coffee House and shop along the main street, Mason Avenue, which is lined with shops and galleries. Don’t miss Watson’s Hardware  — it’s well stocked with everything from tools to beach toys.

The boutique Hotel Cape Charles looks out over the harbor, and stately Victorian B&Bs line the neighborhood streets nearby. Opposite the town harbor, you’ll find the Cape Charles Yacht Center , which can accommodate megayachts and offers storage and servicing, which offers ground transportation for boaters. Walk the trails at the Eastern Shore of Virginia Wildlife Refuge , a short drive from Cape Charles. An art deco theater spotlights local, regional, and national talent. The Oyster Farm at Kings Creek, with a marina, restaurant and event venue, flanks the northern side of town, and  Bay Creek Resort & Club on the southern side is home to two nationally ranked golf courses designed by golf legends Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. SAXIS ISLAND

Saxis sits on the Chesapeake Bay, just south of the Maryland border. It is an island in name alone. It is connected to the rest of the Eastern Shore by a large marsh that also serves as a wildlife refuge. The town’s shallow harbor is only navigable by smaller boats, but it’s well worth a stop.

Dine at one of the two restaurants in town. If you’re coming off the water early grab breakfast and conversation with locals at Martha’s Kitchen . If you need a little local seafood and a cocktail to unwind after a hard day of seafaring wiggle your toes in the sand at the tiki bar at Captain E’s Hurricane Grill .

After you grab a bite to eat, stroll the small town streets and wander into the Saxis Island Museum to learn more about the town’s 350-year history. If you find the museum locked, call the number on the door. The staff are all just minutes away and would be happy to show you around.

Take a walk along the town’s sandy beach or \swim in the shallow, warm waters of the Chesapeake Bay. It’s known as a great spot for finding sea glass.

If you’d like to spend a night on land Tall Pines Harbor Campground a few miles up the road offers everything from primitive camping to cozy cabins.

In true small-town fashion, to rent a slip in Saxis contact Mayor Denise Drewer at 757-710-4747.

WACHAPREAGUE

Wachapreague is the gateway to the barrier islands off the coast of Virginia’s Eastern Shore. You can boat right up to the islands, hop out and spend a day on the sand, just be sure to leave nothing but footprints behind and obey all posted signs.

Once you get to Wacahpreague there are plenty of places to tie up, including a town marina and several privately owned facilities. All are within easy walking distance of Wachapreague’s attractions.

After a day on the barrier islands head into Wachapreague for dinner at the Island House. Enjoy fresh local seafood while looking out over the salt marsh and the islands you just left.

Spend the night at a vacation rental, Airbnb, campground or motel. Then rise early for a breakfast sandwich at Trident Tackle or the Wachapreague General Store. After you’ve filled up spend a day fishing, birdwatching or kayaking with an eco-tour guide .

CHINCOTEAGUE

Chincoteague Island is the perfect blend of small-town charm and modern conveniences. Old school seafood joints coexist with food trucks and family classics like mini golf and bumper boats can be found alongside a craft brewery.

Chincoteague has numerous facilities where you can tie up, whether you want to be right in the middle of town or enjoy the luxury of a hotel and marina with views of Assateague Island. Harbors and marinas on Main Street offer easy access to restaurants, shops and entertainment, while facilities on the Atlantic side of the island offer easy access to Assateague Island and the famous Chincoteague ponies.

Hop on the Pony Express, the town’s trolley service, and take a ride to the Museum of Chincoteague Island. Learn about the island’s history from ancient past to modern day and get a look at Misty, the pony made famous in the children’s classic  Misty of Chincoteague.

After your tour of the museum, rent a bike and pedal into the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge for a look at the wild ponies and a day on the beach.

If shopping is more your style, browse the shops on Main Street or stop by the farmer’s market, it’s open twice a week in the peak of summer.

When you start to get hungry, try the local Chincoteague oysters. They’re briny and crisp. And no trip to the island would be complete without a scoop of ice cream from the Island Creamery , it’s been voted the best in American so many times it’s easy to lose track.

Anonymous on September 5th, 2023:

The instructions sent by email put you in an incorrect spot in the marina, this was very frustrating as I had to back up my Morgan, which doesn't like backing up. Also, the electrical connections weren't working and we had to hunt to find some that were.

A Note from the Marina: Snag-A-Slip reached out to the marina manager for further comment but did not hear back regarding this review.

Thomas on September 5th, 2023:

My stay at Cape Charles Yachting Center was very nice, the floating docks are in good shape and my transient spot was on a long dock shared by other boats, unfortunately, on of these boats was a working fishing boat that the crew was rather loud in the night. I don't think this is normal issue because this boat was just in port for a storm and a repair. The grounds are great for dogs and well kept but the bath house needs some attention to cleanliness even though I've been in a lot worse over the years. The walk to town is a little far but not too bad for a little exercise. There is a golf cart you can reserve but it's limited to two hours, we had folding bikes and they were great in this situation. Cape Charles is a very easy town to bike with lovely streets and plenty of shops/restaurants and a brewery not far from downtown.

Anonymous on August 29th, 2023:

They are still working out some kinks with the Oasis ownership. Very good staff, there needs to be more bathroom/shower facilities (there are only 2 bathrooms for the marina), the golf cart that can be used needs to be maintained and there should be a few of them. Also a service to get people to/from the closest grocery store without renting a car would be great. The immediate town is effectively shut down on Mondays and not everything is open Tues-Wed either so getting out past where golf carts are allowed is needed for provisioning. Also, there is no place to quickly get boat supplies, but I understand they are builiding a ship store later this year.

Anonymous on August 22nd, 2023:

Could use more bathroom facilities. Two for the number of people that attended the Cape Charles Race was very crowded.

Pete on August 21st, 2023:

Anonymous on August 21st, 2023:

Excellent operation- the General Manager was on the dock most of the afternoon. New facilities. My only complaint is there are only 2 bathrooms- they are unisex and the toilet and shower are in the same room, so there was a reasonably big line in the mornings to be able to get in. It was a super busy weekend so maybe that's not normal. Otherwise, I would give it 5 stars.

First night was fine. I went fishing the next day to come back and see that someone was in my slip. I was able to tie off but there was no power so I had to use my generator all night.

A Note from the Marina: Thank you for your comments, I apologize for the mix up on your docking assignment we have issued a refund for your power for your stay.

Enjoyed our stay at CCYC. Facilities are in great shape, staff are helpful, and we appreciated the use of a golf cart to run into town.

Anonymous on August 6th, 2023:

Mushrooms growing in the shower. Can't even open a simple web page with the wifi. Staff indifferent. Overpriced. Never again.

A Note from the Marina: Thank you for your comments, I have spoken with housekeeping on your mushroom comments as I had never seen them in there before. My team member that was on that day confirmed what you are saying, and I’m embarrassed to say the least, we are taking every step to remedy that issue. On the Wi-Fi issue we are in the process of upgrading our Wi-Fi currently it’s on Verizon and we are switching to Spectrum for this very issue. We are on their time frame but we do know it’s an issue and we are working to correct it. --Smitty Dize, General Manager

Very helpful staff. Nice laundry. Nice facilities, but bath house was a mess. Water & mud on the floors. Could benefit from better housekeeping.

A Note from the Marina: Thank you for your comments, being a boat yard as well has made it challenging to keep the restrooms clean. I have directed staff to do a better job of checking and calling in our housekeeper more if needed. --Smitty Dize, General Manager

Guy on August 5th, 2023:

Nice folks, nice facilities. Appreciate the use of the golf cart to get around town. We’ll be back.

Mark on August 4th, 2023:

Jeremy on July 27th, 2023:

Very nice, ipe floating docks. Well protected basin with 2 basic bath/showers (1 each washer & dryer) adjacent with a small upscale ($$$) restaurant for dinners only. But that’s it! No Wi-Fi. The dockside electrical had a “soft” breaker - for us, no one in the next slip so the other 50A hookup was fine. Pumpout with a short hose is blocked by a permanently moored boat. Fortunately, there is a pumpout at the gas dock across the fairway. CCYC is the furthest away from town, no golf carts or transportation available, so 20 minute walk past the stacks of crab traps etc. also the furthest from the prefab concrete plant on the S side of the basin so relatively less noise & dust. CCYC appears to be primarily a service oriented marina with a 25’ beam, 75 ton travel lift whose amenities & other services struggle to justify $3/foot on the Eastern shore

John on July 25th, 2023:

It was advertised they had fuel, but they do not. The dock hand did not know anything about electric or water hookup, nor did he know what a pumpout is. Not his fault, I think they had someone fill in that has no knowledge of marina boat slips. Will never stay there again.

A Note from the Marina: We'd like to thank this boater for staying with our marina as well as taking the time to provide feedback. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience experienced during this stay at our marina. Regarding the fuel availability, we do offer bulk fuel by transport with a minimum order of 100 gallons, and it must be requested 24 hours in advance, as advertised. Our General Manager personally handles all fuel orders and, during this boater's stay, we did not receive any fuel orders for their specific date. If a request was placed, please contact us directly so we can further research and address the matter. We also want to acknowledge the issue with the staff member you encountered. Rest assured, we take your concerns seriously, and we have addressed this matter to ensure that our team members are well-informed and knowledgeable about all aspects of our marina services. Your satisfaction is of utmost importance to us, and we are committed to improving our services based on valuable feedback like yours. We hope you will reconsider and give us another chance to provide you with a better experience on your future visits.

Brian on July 24th, 2023:

Very friendly helpful people. good location, but it is a bit of a walk to town, highly recommend getting a golf cart. Docks are nice. Easy in and out

A Note from the Marina: Thank you for your comment and for staying with our marina. Unfortunately on the Friday before your stay, our HVAC unit began having issues. We made every effort to get HVAC techs out ahead of the busy July 4th weekend, we reset the HVAC system multiple times, but unfortunately were unable to get it fixed as quickly as we would have liked. We're sorry that this made it so your stay was not as comfortable as it should have been, and we truly apologize. We hope to welcome you back for an improved visit in the future..

I was surprised that there was no one to assist with mooring when we arrived (on a Saturday). Had I known this, I would have approached it differently. Not what I would expect from a marina at the price they charge. Finally, someone wandered out with marina information, and he said that he "didn't know anything about boats", and then went on to prove it.

A Note from the Marina: Thank you for taking time to leave a review. We would like to apologize that a staff member was not there to meet you on arrival, that is not our typical procedure. Please be assured we will investigate what happened during your visit and ensure it does not happen again. We hope to welcome you back to the marina for an improved experience in the future.

The visit to Cape Charles Yacht Center was great...friendly and knowledgeable employees. We have always used the Town Harbor in the past, but they were unable to accommodate us on this trip. We were able to fuel up right in the slip via a tanker truck at a very reasonable price. CC's golf cart rental in Cape Charles had a golf cart waiting for us at the slip, and we were able to leave it there when we left for home. Overall, a great experience in Cape Charles.

It was a nice location with friendly staff a a short walk to “town”. Nice floating docks and clean bathroom/shower. I was disappointed by the power pedestal that didn’t work properly and lack of ice.

A Note from the Marina: We'd like to thank this customer for staying with us here at Cape Charles Yacht Center and for taking the time to provide feedback. Our power pedestals were recently installed, and our troubleshooting with this customer confirmed they were getting reverse polarity. We do have the electrician back out today to analyze for any issues. Unfortunately, our ice machine is down at this time. Typically, we will get ice for any customer that asks for it, but we had a new employee who was not aware of this. We apologize for the inconvenience and will ensure all employees are re-trained on these procedures. We hope to welcome this customer back for an improved experience in the future.

Nice marina, great staff, great location if you want to go into town -- but not a great value for the high price. Bathrooms were acceptable but not exceptional, very nice floating docks, no other amenities. Cape Charles is a resort town, with great beaches and the usual kitschy downtown. Restaurant at the marina is excellent and highly recommend dinner there.

Ed on June 30th, 2021:

There are three different facilities here. Cape Charles Yacht Center dock, Cape Charles Town Harbour and the boatyard. All of these are now under the management of the team managed by JB Tuner and Nicole Jacques. They are also known for their work at Front Street Shipyard in Belfast, ME. So, they are dedicated to extraordinary customer service and quality work. I just spent 2 months in the yard and at the dock enjoying springtime on the Chesapeake Bay. The staff and crew are exceedingly accommodating, focused on getting the job done on time and on budget and making sure you are comfortable. This is a hidden gem. Cape Charles remains an up and coming destination on Chesapeake Bay because of the team here. Five stars.

John on August 22nd, 2020:

We came here to haul out a catamaran and get some bottom work done. While the haul out facility is narrow, the crew is experienced at fitting wide-beam boats in using pool noodles and life preservers as hand-held fenders. Our beam is 24' 3" and they could have handled up to 25' 0" I think. The travel lift is a BFM 75 II, so it's got limited length capability. They succeeded (barely) in lifting my double-masted cat that requires the front strap to be about 30 feet from the travel lift's cross beam. On the work side, they have a very limited number of skilled personnel, and having let George go, that is more limited. JB Turner has a goal to expand capability, so I hope he'll succeed. For some keel work, they were recommending vinylester and 24 hour cure between layers so they could sand the work flatter between layers. This will prevent molecular bonding between layers and vinylester lacks the strength of epoxy. An experienced subcontractor they hired will be doing epoxy with proper layup layers promoting molecular bonding. The folks are all friendly and helpful here, and you can work on your own boat as long as it does not include grinding or painting. Cape Charles is operating during COVID, with changes. Monday and Tuesday is pretty closed down for restaurants. Prices are tourist-level. Haircuts require appointments. All that aside, it’s a nice small town.

Gwyn on May 8th, 2020:

Great Marina! Pristine docks and awesome restaurant doing take out. Quick walk to downtown. Dt is really great and stores are starting to open up. We will definitely come back for a longer visit!

Bree on March 1st, 2020:

Close enough to downtown area. So much to do and see in Cape Charles. This facility does great service work as well. Also close to a golf course if you're there to visit for a few days!

Tim on June 17th, 2019:

Vary nice marina. I echo what previous reviewer said. Couple additional comments: 1. Just like the town marina across the channel, this place can get a bit rocky when seas/wind pick up from the SW-NW. 2. Yes, there is access to the resort pool but currently there is a $12/pp fee. Told that will go away in the near future. 3. New restaurant will open very soon (mid-Jun 19). I look forward to future improvements!

Rob on July 9th, 2017:

There is a incredible investment being made in this marina. While it is currently only in the beginning stages, what they have done has been done well. Floating docks are wide and well built. There is currently only a single bathroom/shower, and no pool. However, the marina provides access to a golf cart and van. Cape Charles beach is easily accessible by dinghy or by the cart. I would definitely go back and would recommend this over the town docks.

Cape Charles Yacht Center to Take Over Town-Owned Marina

cape charles yacht center photos

The Cape Charles Harbor will benefit from new management. Photo: Cape Charles Yacht Center

Two marine companies in Cape Charles are coming together, and it’ll likely to bring a boost to Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

On October 1, the town-owned Cape Charles Harbor began a three-month transition to management by the neighboring Cape Charles Yacht Center. The town council unanimously approved the three-year contract in September. This public-private partnership offers the potential to grow both businesses. With its prime location just inside the Chesapeake’s mouth, with a protected harbor and 18-foot channel, Cape Charles can become a major stopover for cruising boat traffic from Florida to New England.

The Yacht Center’s leaders plan to expand its capabilities to service large yachts, including acquisition of a 500-metric-ton hoist and construction of a 70-foot-high, 70,000-square-foot service shed. The expansion will bring additional good-paying skilled jobs to the area.

Meanwhile, the Town and its Harbor’s certified clean marina will serve “spillover traffic” and offer facilities and amenities for transient visitors as well as local boaters, working watermen, and anglers. The Yacht Center will share employees with the Harbor, including a full-time dockmaster for both facilities.

The principals behind the Yacht Center, JP Turner and Nicole Jacques, bring significant strengths to both enterprises. Turner is President and a co-owner of Front Street Shipyard, a custom boat builder, service yard and marina that has transformed the waterfront of Belfast, Maine into a major Northeast hub for boats of many sorts, from 20’ center consoles up to and including 200’ mega-yachts. Jacques is the owner of Rhumbline Communications, a strategic marketing and communications firm serving the marine industry also based in Belfast.

Although there is no formal ownership connection between the Cape Charles Yacht Center and Front Street Shipyard, Turner and Jacques anticipate opportunities to collaborate on projects, as Front Street does with several other Maine shipyards. Such teamwork will be especially appropriate as Turner and Jacques move forward with plans to

Rhumbline Communications will be in position to market the two operations together broadly along the Atlantic coast. Front Street Shipyard offers the same kind of synergy with the town wharf in Belfast. However, to make sure the new relationship is truly effective, the Cape Charles Town Council built a one- year review into the contract to allow its members to evaluate all aspects and adjust as appropriate. One major priority is to make sure the Town retains its identity as a working harbor, even as it expands its outreach.

The Cape Charles Yacht Club was established in the Fall of 2012 by a few sailing and boating enthusiasts who reside in the Cape Charles area on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The founding members felt that any active harbor needed the presence of a yacht club as one of many anchors to build camaraderie among fellow mariners and those that would venture into our harbor and marina.

Given three different design options for the new Yacht Club Community Center , most of the Cape Coral City Council is leaning toward a coastal, Key West-flavor architecture.

At a committee of the whole meeting on Wednesday, the city sought direction from the council on a design direction for the outside of the community building.

"It's a concept, just like we do with anything else, and as we are designing, things may come up that we want to shift and be nimble (on)," said Cape Coral City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn.

James Pankonin with Kimley Horn, a consulting firm focusing on public and private developments, presented the information about the look of the community building.

Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park, which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has been a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s but is set to undergo major renovations after Hurricane Ian delayed the original plans .

The current plans include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.

The city is also preparing for the demolition of the Yacht Club and its facilities in April as it awaits permits.

No estimates could be provided for the price of the new building.

"It will really come into how much of certain materials are needed and construction methods," Ilczyszyn said.

The city will have that information once they have 30% of the construction design.

Two public meetings for the designs are planned for April 2 and May 7.

After getting public input, the city will vote to amend its contract with Kimley Horn to approve all these changes.

The plan is to have these changes approved or introduced before the summer hiatus.

New Designs for the Yacht Club building

John Bryant with Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors, a Sarasota-based design firm, said the goal with the new designs was to maintain the experience of the original Yacht Club.

The majority of the council preferred option one.

Design one:

Bryant described the first option as "coastal vernacular" and similar to the park buildings at Lake Kennedy and Yellow Fever Creek.

"So it's sort of informed by the current architectural work in 2024," Bryant said. "Kinda Key West."

Councilmember Dan Sheppard and Mayor John Gunter preferred option one.

Gunter said the design was the most pleasing for him.

Councilmember Keith Long liked option one and said he liked the Key West aesthetic.

Councilmember Tom Hayden liked option one.

Design two:

Option two is more informed by the current Yacht Club and would have a stone base and mid-century feel to it, according to Bryant.

"There's certainly opportunity to kind of further develop this option to have even more of the existing Yacht Club feel, but a different vibe, feel than option one," Bryant said.

He also said option two might be more expressive the closer they try to recreate the aesthetic of the old ballroom building.

Councilmember Jessica Cosden liked design two as it incorporated design elements of the old building though she lamented how similar it looked to the first design.

"I wish we could have done more, but I know it's hard with a two-story building, to make it look the same as a very unique one-story building.

Councilmember Bill Steinke said two would be his choice as well, but was wary of additional maintenance of natural wood products used in the design.

"As long as we can bring that aesthetic and keep the maintenance down, number two would be my choice," Steinke said.

Councilmember Robert Welsh said he could go either way, but he liked the look of two.

Design three:

This would be more contemporary and modern.

"Even with a more contemporary language, you can still have warmth, incorporating some wood elements and stone elements," Bryant said.

None of the council members expressed any favorability for the third design.

Inside the new community center

The Community Center will have an additional 10,000 square feet for a total of 47,000 square feet, a history room to remember the first ballroom building on the first floor, and more rooms for civic and community use on the first floor.

Additionally, the new ballroom has shifted slightly as the balcony area on the second floor has been expanded to wrap around the top of the building.

The new Cape Coral Yacht Club is getting an "Old Florida" facelift. Cape Coral City Council members decided on a "Key West aesthetic" for the community center.

At Tuesday's Cape Coral City Council meeting, developers presented three design options for the new community center at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. The yacht club was destroyed by Hurricane Ian.

Developers described option one as a "Key West-inspired- aesthetic". Number two is very similar to the original yacht club building with wood and stone features. Option three is a more modern design. Three council members, including Bill Steinke, Robert Welsh and Jessica Cosden voted for option two.

"I think it's important that we stick to what we talked about. I don't think we made a promise, but I think we talked about incorporating the old building in this design," said District 7 Council member Jessica Cosden.

Five council members, including Mayor John Gunter, Dan Sheppard, Tom Hayden, Richard Carr, and Keith Long voted for option one.

"I just appreciate the aesthetic of the old Key West. I think we should also keep in mind; we just had a discussion at the CRA meeting, I believe, with regards to keeping the coastal theme in that particular area. I think we utilize the yacht club plans as a reference for that," said District 6 Council member Keith Long.

No one voted for the third option.

This means developers will move on with option one. Cape Coral City Council will continue to discuss design plans in two upcoming meetings on April 2 and May 7.

The new community center will be 2 stories totaling 47,000 square feet. It will have plenty of space for events in its ballroom, multi-purpose hall and meeting spaces. It will also have a kitchen, bathrooms and space for retail. Designs also show a wrap-around balcony and open foyer.

A spokesperson with the City of Cape Coral said the deconstruction process has begun in preparation for the demolition of the buildings. According to the city's website, demolition is supposed to begin next month.
