Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht

Review: Hatteras 60 Luxury Motor Yacht

Sixty feet may be at lower end of the spectrum for serious offshore cruisers but Hatteras believes it’s big enough to deliver the amenities and the fit and finish you expect in a top-end yacht. And it’s set out to prove it with its 60 Motor Yacht; small enough to put in at any port for fuel but big enough to be a first-class entertainment platform and distance cruiser.

Hatteras 60 MY

How do you fit more than 60ft’s worth of space into a 60-footer? Give her a class-record 5.53m beam. That also adds weight, improving stability and comfort in a seaway.

Another way she measures up is in the 3785-litre fuel capacity – much more than some rivals and hugely extending her range, particularly at a typical 10kt cruise on a long passage.

Boarding is either from the side decks via removable stairs or from the swim platform that stands out 1.30m from the transom.

In the transom corners are large pull-up cleats, while a hatch to starboard conceals city water connectors and two 50-Amp shore cords on electric reels. The hydraulic platform option (US$55,968) adds a place to store and launch a PWC or tender.

Moulded steps each side lead to the aft deck and Hatteras thoughtfully added rails to both sets of stairs, plus teak treads (US$6068) and courtesy lights for night-time safety.

A water-tight hatch in the transom leads to the lazarette. Also accessible from the engine room, there’s an option (US$59,800) to convert this space to a crew area if needed.

The aft deck is the first of several entertainment areas, with a C-shaped sofa across the transom wrapping around a high-gloss teak table on chromed pedestals, and two freestanding chairs ahead. The whole area is protected by the 2.11m ceiling created by the extended flybridge above. Teak decking (US$20,398) on the test boat is a continuation of the teak from the stairs, while a hatch in the centre leads to the engine room.

The bow is accessible from decks to port and starboard that are protected by 66cm bulwarks topped with rails, raising protection to 84cm.

At the working end of the bow is a Maxwell windlass with foot controls, and two access hatches to the rode. The anchor is mounted to a stainless steel roller, but we’d like a cleat to secure the rode when the anchor’s deployed, to take the load off the windlass.

Behind that is a large sunpad; the end flips up to create a forward-facing bench seat to enjoy the view ahead. This is sure to be a popular spot underway, so a pedestal table option would be welcome.

Flying bridge

The Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht’s flybridge is accessed by stairs starboard and forward from the aft deck. Protected by a hardtop and isinglass curtains, it’s another comfortable space, with a U-shaped sofa around two teak pedestal tables to port, close enough to the captain and observer for easy conversation.

Aft (on the roof of the aft deck below) is an open area suitable for use as a boat deck if you tick the box for the optional 450kg hydraulic davit (US$26,585), though in this case it’d been left as a sun spot. Ahead there’s an electric grill, with space for an icemaker beneath.

The flybridge helm is the only operating station on the Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht, which explains the wrap-around protection. The area also has heating and a/c, with two vents at the helm to keep the skipper happy.

A starboard-mounted pod console includes two engine displays for the twin CAT C18s, with another pair of 15in displays ahead of the operator. Steering is hydraulically power assisted, and left of the wheel is the autopilot, while right and above is a Furuno digital display for depth, speed and water temperature. The VHF is alongside and below that the engine start/stops flank the fuel gauge. Also below are the rocker switches, digital engine controls, engine and throttle overrides, bow thruster controls and two SeaKeeper gyro controls (US$235,000 option).

Given the Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht’s beam and displacement, she’s the last boat in her class to need gyros but rough-weather sailors might want them.

Behind the helm, Platinum Series helm seats put the captain in the centre while the observer gets a slightly better view thanks to their starboard location. The captain’s position limits the view of the side decks, though we’d add that we had no problems docking, and stern-to docking is helped by the view down the companionway stairs.

Access to the salon from the aft deck is through a sliding glass door; inside, frameless tinted and tempered glass windows and the 2.01m clearance to the fabric ceiling keep things airy.

Forward, the galley and dining areas are up a step, with a matching ceiling boost. The starboard galley is well thought-out with no dead ends, making it easy for two or three to share cooking duties. An island bench with sink has storage underneath.

The remainder of the L-shaped galley features stone countertops, a four-burner ceramic cooktop, five refrigerated drawers, a dishwasher and a convection microwave.

Ahead, a watertight pantograph door leads to the starboard side deck where an opening rail lets you attach stairs to the dock for convenient deliveries.

In the dining area, the synthetic wood flooring from the salon and galley continues, and L-shaped seating wraps around a high-gloss table. The beam really pays off here as six can comfortably eat at this table. Behind, you’ll find storage and an icemaker, with a wine fridge ahead.

Built in L-shaped seating to port includes storage underneath and a high-gloss coffee table in front. To starboard there’s a freestanding chair and a 37in flat-screen TV wired to the Bose surround-sound system.

Accommodation

The Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht is a three-stateroom/two-head design. The lower decks are accessed from a curving stairway to starboard, ahead of the galley. Windows and a glass safety panel allow light in, and cupboards lining the stairway include one concealing the breaker panel.

The full-beam master is aft. Centred around a king berth, there are nightstands each side, with drawers both sides and rectangular hull windows above; the starboard drawers can be swapped for a settee, and there’s also a desk and chair this side.

The en suite with walk-in shower is ahead to port. A mirrored ceiling lends a spacious feel, while there are marble countertops, with stone tiling and a frameless glass door in the shower.

VIP and guest berths are forward and to port respectively, and share a head. VIPs get a private entrance to this head; it serves the guest suite and functions as a day head via a second entry in the hallway. The VIP stateroom features a queen-size island berth with portlights both sides, storage alongside the berth and the usual hanging locker behind.

In the guest room you’ll find over/under berths in an L configuration. This is more spacious than conventional or Pullman bunks, and made possible by the 5.53m beam.

Engine room

The engine room is accessed from an electrically actuated hatch in the centre of the aft deck. A ladder leads to the aft section where as standard there’s a pair of 1000hp CAT C18s – the upgrade to 1136hp C18s on our test boat is a US$125,000 option. At 2.01m, there’s plenty of headroom, and it’s half a metre wide at its narrowest, between two fuel filters. There are no sea rails but there are grab rails overhead.

To the port-side rear is a single 21.5kW generator; a second is a US$22,694 option. There are individual seacocks for each engine and the generator, plus high-speed pick-ups for the water maker (4500L/day water maker, US$25,900), a/c and raw-water pumps. The fuel tank is aluminium while the water tank is polyethylene. Both engines have electric fuel priming but we’d like to see sea strainers on the main engine water intakes.

Quite simply, she’s a dreamboat. Solid and stable are the operative words. We had flat calm conditions on the day, but crossing wakes the Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht was exemplary, her high bows parting waves quite well and keeping spray low and wide for a dry ride.

With four wheel-rotations from lock to lock, turning her can be more aggressive than other models in the line-up. Few owners would operate her with the heavy hand of a test captain but it bodes well for operating in heavy seas, particularly a following sea where the wheel works harder to maintain a steady heading. In that case, the brisk handling will be a godsend.

The docking qualities of yachts like this are always a talking point because few of us get to do it without making a purchase, and the Hatteras handles the task with grace and poise.

The 60 Motor Yacht is equipped with a bow thruster only. With side-to docking, put the wheel hard over, add a shot of ahead to the dock-side engine and the stern will start to move over. Now add a touch of thruster in the same direction and she’ll start to glide sideways. With a light touch on the controls she’ll lay up with a gentle squish of the fenders so the crew can step off and tie her up.

Pulling away is the same, with the wheel in the opposite direction; push the stern away, then add thruster and she slides off pretty as you please.

To back into a slip, centre the wheel and use the separate engine controls to steer her back. Reverse the port engine, the stern will come back and ease to starboard. Add starboard to stop the side drift, and leave it on for another second and the stern swings to port. Nudge the thruster to keep the bow where you want it and you go in as easy as side-to docking.

Hatteras yachts are among the easiest to handle around the dock, plenty of thrust getting the job done without needing a heavy hand. Apply the old docking rule – don’t move faster than you’re prepared to hit something – and things seem to work out fine.

Less seasoned captains can add the CAT 360 Joystick control system at US$133,646 to simplify things.

Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht Test Walkthrough Video

Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht Test Walkthrough Video

June 2, 2017 1:56 pm

The Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht is the perfect choice for an owner-operator with its ease of use and intuitive operation. Join us as Boattest.com tests this luxurious motoryacht :

The following opinions are solely those of BoatTest.com and its test captain.

Hi, Capt. Steve for BoatTest.com, and today I’m on a premium motoryacht designed to take on ocean conditions while providing performance and comfort. It’s the Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht , and I’m going to take it on a full test.

Before we get into her performance and handling, let’s take a quick tour of our deck to check out the line handling and anchoring capabilities. There are two stairways – port and starboard through a transom, making access to a large swim platform quick for an owner-operator.

As I come up in the side decks, I measure 18 inches between the cabin side and the rail, and the rails come up 34 inches. Notice how the cabin size are slightly curved in to give you a little bit more shoulder space as you make your way forward. Two 12-inch cleats on the side of the boat, convenient storage for lines and fenders.

Making our way up to the port deck, we have a Maxwell windlass with foot controls leading out to a stainless steel anchor roller, two access hatches on either side of the windlass for gaining access to the anchor rode storage. However, the storage compartment itself is not self-draining.

At the working end of the bow, 4-inch tow rails and the handrails come up 28 inches. The cleat and the chalk are in line with each other, so the dock lines will have to make a 90-degree angle, chafing here is installed.

To the port side the rail has a convenient boarding area, to the starboard side a watertight door with another boarding gate. Additionally, at both the port and starboard side are mounts for the ladder that’s stored in the lazarette for boarding from a tender.

Now let’s take a look at some of the features of the flying bridge. Firstly, I like these molded in steps as they leave you protected in a seaway. Both the captain and the observer get Pompanette platinum series seats with flip-up footrest, flip-up armrest; they swivel, slide and adjust for height as well as recline.

The helm layout is very orderly and almost entirely digital. The CAT displays, flanking the ZF display at the top of the panel, 20-inch nav displays to either side of the helm, Icom marine radio, depth gauge to the center, all of the engine controls and your electrical switches. The Zenith emergency backup controls, bow thruster controls and your joystick maneuvering system control, digital engine controls and autopilot over to the left-hand side.

The flybridge helm has 360-degree visibility, interrupted only by the hardtop supports. However, I don’t have a clear sight line of the stern. But by using the joystick maneuvering system and stepping to the side, now I have a sight line down the hatch of the starboard quarter.

Now let’s get underway. The Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht has a length overall of 60 feet 11 inches, a beam of 18 feet 2 inches and a draft of 4 feet 6 inches. With an empty weight of 76,000 pounds, 3-quarters fuel and 4 people onboard, we had a test weight of 81,240 lbs.

With a pair of 1135 horsepower CAT C18 engines powering our test boat, we reached a top speed at 2350 RPM of 31.5 knots. At that speed we were burning 120 gallons per hour for range of 236 nautical miles.

Best cruise was reached at 1500 RPM and 15.9 knots. That gave us a fuel-burn of 40 GPH and we could keep that up for 23 hours, giving a range of 358 nautical miles while still maintaining a 10% reserve.

But I find that the Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht feels most comfortable to me at around 1700 RPM, which is 73% of the throttle setting. That gives me a speed of 20.7 knots over the ground.

She exhibits a 5-degree bow high attitude at cruise, and in a full overturn at cruise speed, the radius looks to be about 3 boat lengths and she tends to lean 1-2 degrees outboard in the turn. With the convex bow design on the Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht, it throws water well off to the sides, and I’m very happy with the wave penetration, it doesn’t go pounding through the wave, it’s a nice clean slice through.

Hatteras 60 motoryacht for sale Denison walkthrough video

Close quarters maneuvering was amazing. With large 50-inch propeller, she was incredibly responsive to control inputs at low speed. With differential thrust she will turn in her own length with the pivot point being exactly at the standing position of the flybridge helm. I have yet to be in a boat that response so well to the control inputs which has to be due to those large propellers.

As you can see here, it allowed us the precision of back into a slip only marginally wider than the 60 Motor Yachts beam. In my opinion this is a key feature in making the 60 Motor Yacht an owner-operator’s boat without requiring the need for a hired captain. Her independent joystick for the bow thruster only serves to increase the confidence level.

Well that’s my full test of the Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht. In my opinion, she provides a solid ride while having the capability of handling ocean conditions. For BoatTest.com, I’m Capt. Steve. We’ll see you on the water.

Full Chapter One

  • Hatteras Yachts

by David Pascoe

A long with Bertram and Hinckley, Hatteras has the distinction of being one of the first three production fiberglass boat builders to start up in around 1960. Oddly enough all three survive today, although Bertram may yet go by the wayside. The company was started in 1959 by North Carolina knitting mill owner Willis Slane who, as word has it, just wanted to build a good strong boat for himself for fishing the outer banks. What followed is one of the unparalleled success stories of the fiberglass boat building industry.

Oddly enough, of the three major startups in around 1960 - Bertram, Hinckely and Hatteras - the former are know for producing boat hulls that almost never blister. Hatteras should have applied for a patent on the blistering process, for they were one of the worst offenders. Most likely this is because Hatteras has always painted their boats and has used low quality gelcoats that are prone to blistering, as well as lower quality resins, for gel coat alone does not account for the problem.

For the most part, Hatteras built balsa cored boats. In earlier years, up through about 1980, the hulls were solid glass, and then cored hull sides appeared. Decks and house tops have always been balsa cored. In fact, were it not for Hatteras, Baltec would probably not be in business today. If you want to know how good balsa is as a core material, try to find a Hatteras with a core problem. Out of thousands of boats produced, there are only a few. And speaking of balsa, if you've ever noticed that Hatteras yachts are notably quieter inside than most others, that's because of the wonderful acoustic properties of balsa.

When it comes to building good quality, consistent and reasonably priced motor yachts, no one had been able to hold a candle to Hatteras. Unlike Bertram, Hatteras recognized that wives often controlled the checkbook in the family, and didn't make the mistake of forgetting this important marketing factor like Bertram did. Thus, when the recession of '89 struck, Hatteras was at least poised to survive it, whereas Bertram had locked themselves into the sport fishing market exclusively, with their ugly formica interiors, and manly appointments. Thus, they went down with the end of the free-spending era of the 1980's. But were it not for the parent company's deep pockets, even Hatteras probably wouldn't have survived, for large boat sales were almost nonexistent for three long years.

Yet Hatteras has since abandoned a major part of the market that they had filled for so long, the medium size sport fisherman and motor yachts of a type that was renowned for their sea keeping abilities, having been designed by the famous designer Jack Hargrave. Two prominent examples of which are the 45 Convertible and 43 motor yacht. Today, the smallest boat they make is a fifty footer priced at well over one million dollars. And with Bertram not gaining much attention in the mid size range either, the days when we had a few good quality, rugged offshore type boats to choose from are over. All we are left with is an aging fleet of older Hatterai and Bertrams. The Bertram fleet once consisted of 21, 25, 26, 28, 30, 31, 33, 35, 37, 38, 42, 43, and 46 foot models. All that's left is are outrageously priced 36 and 39 footers which are rarely seen on the waterfront these days.

Unfortunately, no one has rushed in to fill the void created by the withdrawal of these two companies. Oh, sure a few have tried, but the most recent offerings don't even come close to duplicating these legends. So why did Hatteras abandon this market? Or why isn't Bertram doing well with their three boats under 50 feet? In a word, cost and lower profit margins.

To produce boats of this quality today simply costs more than the market will bear. Plus, they probably can't compete with the lower cost price leaders since fewer and fewer people are willing to pay the freight for better quality. Boats have gotten too fancy as people demand more and more amenities, more plush interiors, more appliances, electronics and whatnot. When you add up the cost of all this, and factor in the additional cost factor of substantially higher quality structures and systems, it's not hard to see how good quality boats quickly exceed the reach of most of those who desire them.

But, there is an additional factor as well, which is that the design of a good sea boat is not amenable to the creation of the vast interior spaces that people want today. Boat owners willingly sacrifice sea keeping ability for interior space. Mom takes one look at any good sea boat and says, "But it's so small inside! That Sea Ray was twice as big." Yeah, Mom, it is. but you can't shove a wide flat surface against an oncoming wave and not end up getting splattered against a bulkhead. There's no way you're going to take a Sea Ray to sea as you would a Hatteras.  Mom doesn't want to go to sea anyway. She'd prefer to stay lashed to the dock, close to the swimming pool and tennis courts. And that's why we don't have any more 32, 34, 36, 37, 38, 53, 43, 45, 46, or 48 foot Hatterases anymore. People want floating condos, and the market will always give them what they want so long as enough of them want it. But there aren't enough people that want good sea boats.

So, until people decide either that they're tired of beating their brains out in floating condos, or get tired of staying tied to the dock, or just puttering around in protected waters, or they stop demanding the utmost in luxury, (I'm not holding my breath) the days of the middle class Hatteras are over.

Sad, but very true.

Boat Review: Hatteras 60GT

  • By Dean Travis Clarke
  • Updated: December 4, 2007

Throughout the transportation industry, the designation “GT” stands for the Italian phrase Gran Turismo, a name originally given to grand touring cars. In reality, Hatteras designed its new 60 convertible as its “Tournament Edition,” and I can honestly report that the company has never designed or built a better-running, faster, smoother-riding boat. Tipping the scales at about 20,000 pounds less than its previous 60-footer certainly helps.

Performance Pushing the throttles forward results in an impressive response from the optional twin 1,800-hp Caterpillar C32 ACERT diesels. But just wait: When the turbos build boost pressure, this 60 will walk you to the transom with its acceleration.

At a 5-knot trolling speed, the wake qualifies as spotless past the second wave. Not even any discernable prop wash. We topped out at just over 42 knots at 2,300 rpm while burning a healthy 190 gph. Loafing along at 30.5 knots (1,700 rpm), we dropped that consumption to a mere 100 gph. That’s with full fuel and water tanks, all of the owner’s belongings and our tackle and bait. Churning along at its 2,000-rpm, 36-knot cruising speed, the 60 GT burned 116 gph.

We cruised straight into the 4- to 5-foot head seas off Great Isaac’s Light in the Bahamas at 26 knots and the ride couldn’t have been more comfortable. The head-sea ability of this boat represents a quantum leap improvement over older models – not that they were bad, Hatteras just likes to keep making its boats better.

The 60 GT reverses course in about five boatlengths at cruising speed, and when backing down on a 57-pound dolphin, we hit 8 knots and went straight as an arrow. In addition, this 60-footer spins far faster than you have any right to expect.

I’d love to see the trim tab switches moved to a more accessible spot, however. It’s a bit awkward to reach them way up under the helm pod.

Flybridge One of the boat’s best features is the flybridge helm console. Designed much like a center console, you can pass by it to either side and you’ll find loads of room to pass behind the helm and companion seats. Hatteras provides expansive guest seating forward of the console, as well as to each side on straight settees. An overhead recess hides the electric teaser reels, while under-gunwale 12-volt outlets power the electric reels the factory boat uses for the dredges.

It sure beats pulling them up by hand! A big freezer hides forward of the console with a dry box under the seat in front of that. You also get the obligatory rod storage under both settees and comfortable ladder-back seats that face fore or aft on the back ends of the straight settees.

Even short people will enjoy superb visibility from the wheel. The instrument console opens on either side of the varnished wheel pod. Unfortunately, when open, the hatches hide the controls for the engine displays. An additional hideaway electronics box drops from the hardtop.

I did question the wisdom of mounting the magnetic compass all the way forward on the flybridge brow. There’s absolutely no way you can read it from the helm.

Big, deep troughs along the outboard flybridge deck double as handholds when walking forward and as water channels for drainage.

Engine Room Hatteras provides remarkably roomy access through the cockpit hatch into the engine compartment. Once inside, I discovered tons of room both inboard and outboard of the engines. Yes, it proved just a tad tight getting outboard, but once there, I could’ve brought in a mattress and taken a nap. Noisy equipment, such as generators and compressors, all reside along the aft bulkhead, helping to keep the belowdecks living quarters quieter.

Interior Hatteras put the entire interior on a diet: Everything is composite-cored. Starting in the bow, the forward cabin in this layout sports oblique over/under single berths. Other options include a queen-sized island berth on centerline up front. The master stateroom to port features an athwartship island berth and a private head with shower stall. To starboard you’ll find a cabin with another set of over/under singles. Both the forward and midship cabins each have a private head with shower, too. In the salon, the dinette forward seats three or four adults comfortably.

I’m sure it’s the height of interior decorating chic, but I could do without the gold-sand finish on the bulkhead in the master head. It seems to shed onto the floor each time you brush against it. Fortunately, owners can stipulate pretty much any interior finish they wish. Yes, I know, it’s like complaining about the color of a car. Suffice it to say, I’d do it differently.

Cockpit This 60 sports the ever-popular (and rightly so) mezzanine level, hiding all manner of storage, freezers, insulated drink boxes, etc.

Oddly, the door to the salon slides open toward the outboard side and has several détentes intended to keep your fingers from getting slammed as the boat rolls. I’d much prefer to see a pneumatic ram to open and close the door and it should open into the centerline.

On the other hand, I really liked the heavy-duty rams on the fish boxes. Just stand on the hatch to unlatch it, then step off and the hatch automatically opens. Likewise, once you push the hatch closed, you’ll need to stand on it again to latch it. With hatches this size, it makes lots of sense. And both fish boxes come with split lids for easier access.

Design and Construction The 60 GT represents the first Hatteras to feature a completely resin-infused hull, rather than one built up from layers of hand-laid fiberglass. The automated resin-infusion process provides a more uniform hull thickness from one hull to the next, as well as the most ideal glass-to-resin ratio. This one-two punch produces a boat that weighs significantly less because of the lowered resin content while providing a more precise fit of bulkheads, stringers and other components for increased strength and durability.

Despite the few fine-tuning complaints I’ve voiced, I really like this Hatteras. It has a long list of terrific features that every sport-fishing boat should have – but often doesn’t. For example, I appreciate that the entire foredeck is solid nonskid. Owners who never venture out to the foredeck often don’t care, but the mate who has to anchor or handle dock lines certainly does. And every boat should come with fresh-water washdown outlets up in the tower, in the anchor locker and on the flybridge.

For the hard-core fisherman, the Hatteras 60 comes in a 60 GT Tournament Edition (which we tested). This three-stateroom, two-head package includes an engine upgrade to 1,800 hp, custom hull color and a wraparound windshield styling element. Owners of the GT Tournament Edition can expect a top-end speed of 40 knots and a cruise of 35-plus knots at 2,000 rpm. Combine this performance package with custom bow rails and the optional Carolina Edition teak package, and you’ll have a boat that will sit proud at any tournament.

SUNREEF 88 DOUBLE DECK: A catamaran designed for ultimate comfort!

680 m² of canvas downwind, 460 m² upwind, the Sunreef 88 DD is a real sailboat making 7 knots in just 10 knots of wind

The 88 DD is an imposing catamaran with an air draft of over 40 meters... Welcome to the outsized world of superyachts!

The sheer of the deck makes it possible to house a jet-ski on the sidedeck while maintaining good headroom in the cabins...

On the flybridge, behind the helm station, you find all the indispensable features for relaxation: sunbathing, barbecue, bar and a magnificent 35m² of space

The helm station located on the flybridge allows for handling everything on the entire cat while offering an ideal view of the water.

The aft cockpit encircled by loungers is very large. The skipper's cabin is hidden under the bench seat of the big table. Beneath the stairway, there is access to the day toilets without having to go through the interior of the boat

The Sunreef 88 DD hasn’t forgotten any of the rules of super-yachting. Attention to detail and refinement is everywhere on board, making life enjoyable

The cockpit interior offers a good view forward across the water. From here, you can handle the boat while staying warm during night watches.

The owner's cabin occupies the entire forward part of the coachroof and offers a 180° panoramic view. It has a large bench seat / bunk bed for when the children want to join their parents, and the bathroom is located in the hull. Superb!

The galley is professionally equipped and offers really impressive storage space. A wine cellar and large freezers find their place in the cargo hold under the floor

The guest cabins are just as beautiful

With their new 88  footer from the Double Deck range, Sunreef are unveiling an ultra-comfortable cruising catamaran built for an experienced boating family, and are confirming their ability to complete fully customized projects on the same timescale as production boats.

It took no more than 9 months for the Sunreef 88 DD, first announced at the 2016 Cannes boat show, to see its hulls hit the water in Gdansk, Poland.  Yet this is not just a well-honed semi-custom boat, but a brand new model in the range which is already known to connoisseurs and necessarily demanding owners. Having owned many of the best in English and Italian motor yachts, this family got into sailing with a beautiful 25 meter ketch.  The natural instability of a heeling monohull prompted them to ask Ian Sellers, their skipper, to think of another solution.  The choice of a sailing catamaran was a logical one: the space, stability, low draft, panoramic view and the economical running are irrefutable arguments for those who want XXL-sized comfort.

A good average speed to cross the Atlantic or to reach new anchorages in the Caribbean islands after a beautiful summer season in the Mediterranean also guided their choice.  It simply remained to find a shipyard capable of satisfying the wishes of the owner.  With a budget of more than 4 million euros, this owner was looking for a boat that was not just ultra-equipped and of the highest quality, but a unit that was entirely made ...

DISCOVER THE MODEL

Description.

The start of the ambitious Sunreef 88 Double Deck project was officially communicated during Sunreef Yachts’ press conference at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2016. After eight months of intensive work, the shipyard proudly announced the launch of this catamaran with a zealous, sporty look.

An experienced yachtsman switching from a massive motor yacht , the owner decided to commission the Sunreef 88 Double Deck to pursue a more stable navigation style with greater living space. Indeed, a challenging project for the shipyard’s engineering and design teams.

Nonetheless, this journey was destined to keep the promise of delivering a state-of-the art fully customized sailing catamaran from the start. To achieve the goal of building a seaworthy and dynamic catamaran, Sunreef Yachts’ team of naval architects conceived a completely new yacht design which seemed far sportier than the rest.

Same as all yachts within her range, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck too features a mezzanine level inside the saloon and a spacious master stateroom with a panoramic view in the bow part of the main deck. However, her superstructure was granted a more aerodynamic aspect. As a result, the 88-footer emphasis equally on both performance and luxury, offering over 300m² of living space and an outstanding sailing experience.

Despite this, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck remains a family-friendly yacht offering the best of comfort and safety. The innovative composite superstructure of the sailing yacht conceals a smart and functional layout with luxurious accommodations for eight guests and up to five crew members.

Upon the owners’ request, the interior decor of the Sunreef 88 Double Deck features exclusive natural materials: Chambord oak, linen, leather, natural stone, and quartz tiles – all contribute to the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the sailing yacht . The feeling of warmth was also achieved through applying numerous orange accents to the interiors – an important color for the owner’s family who consider it to be a symbol of energy.

New Sunreef 92 Double Deck Sailing Catamaran

catamaran boat double decker

From the same people who brought you the original Sunreef Yacht, comes the new Sunreef 92 Double Deck , with a new design which not only streamlines the deck house, but tops it with a giant 40 m 2 fly bridge.

This was inspired by similar designs found on other super yacht designs. In collaboration with K-Epsilon and Rivoyre Ingenierie , The Sunreef Naval Architecture Bureau has intensely studied performance and sea capabilities using state of the art CFD, computational flow dynamics to create the ultimate in catamaran luxury.

Using integrated stepped hull chins, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck catamaran increases interior space, without compromising performance. Now this yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests, in up to 5 double luxury suites, as well as a crew of four.

Sunreef’s 92 Double Deck also features a canoe style boom and carbon mast, one of this manufacturer’s specialties. How are they able to accomplish such feats? They added a new mezzanine floor, which includes a coffee table and lounge, located on the port side of the main deck dining area, freeing up more space below for larger cabins and storage space, or even more suites if you prefer.

Because of this innovative design modification, now the owner’s suite occupies two floors of the entire front area of this yacht, with a private luxury office, gym and leisure area on the upper level, with the bathroom, wardrobe and storage area below deck. Each cabin has an extended size, three way access to their King sized beds, with spectacular panoramic sea views. Not only this, but each luxury suite comes with its own separate bath and shower area, large closets, storage lockers, as well as their own air conditioning and a comprehensive entertainment system.

With a LOA of 27 meters, an 11.2m beam, and a 1.6m draft, this super yacht has a 80 ton displacement. It will also be powered by two 405HP 1200 L/3170 Gal engines, and will be able to cruise at speeds up to 15 knots. The 70m 2 cockpit will also include a large dining area, sunbathing mattresses, and diving equipment. Its spacious fly bridge is fitted with a jacuzzi, two wet bars, barbecue, ice makers and even a pair of jet skis. It will also include a tender, hidden in a specially built locker under the main sun pad of the cockpit.

Even though this is only the second of such models, it isn’t hard to see why the Sunreef 92 Double Deck sailing catamaran is on it’s way to be one of the most sought after luxury yachts. With it’s innovative design, state of the art electronics, and focus on luxury, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck is top of the line, and a must for people who may still think they have it all. Don’t miss out on your own little piece of paradise.

A seafaring adventure on island routes double-decker catamaran cruise.

A seafaring adventure on Island Routes double-decker catamaran cruise

Embark on a luxury catamaran cruise adventure out of Ocho Rios, Jamaica that takes adventure to new heights.

Standing on the dock, I pause a moment to let my gaze travel slowly upwards at the gleaming catamaran floating before me. Rocking gently in the calm Caribbean Sea, the beautiful double-decker  Calipsoul  seems familiar yet exciting and new to me all at the same time. I had chosen Island Routes Catamaran Dunn’s River Cruise the last time I was in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It had been the perfect combination of relaxation and excitement that I had been looking for. We had also done the romantic Lovers Rock evening cruise, literally sailing into the sunset together. Making the cruise reservation Both times it had turned out exactly as promised and this time around when I knew I was heading back to Jamaica, I reached out to the wonderfully helpful Island Routes team yet again. I spoke with them about how much I had enjoyed the last catamaran excursion I did with them and shared that this time I would be coming with a group of friends and family of all ages. I had enjoyed the snorkeling aspect of the Dunn’s River cruise so much but it had been fairly short and some of my group said they really wanted to let loose and relax.

Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise They suggested the Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise. They explained that it was like The Dunn’s River cruise minus the climbing, which my mom was happy to hear about, and a lot of time spent exploring the underwater world. Then they told me how great my timing was as they now have a brand new double-decker catamaran! To be honest, I couldn’t quite picture it so I didn’t know what to expect. Standing here, about to step onto the Calipsoul , I am filled with delight as the kids all leap aboard. We aren’t the only family on board that day and as my group is fairly large, coming over on the shuttle service from the Beaches all-inclusive family resort, I had been worried about feeling crowded. Yet, what we discover is the perfect blend of being able to find ample areas for ourselves while also having the opportunity to meet other people as equally excited as we are.

Snorkeling lesson Once in the water, we are directed by the crew, who have joined us, where to swim and, along the way, they make sure to point out coral formations and beautiful fish ensuring we have an amazingly immersive experience (pun intended). I explore for ages and I am very excited as I brought my waterproof camera with me this time and aim to meet my self-imposed challenge of taking an underwater selfie with tropical fish. Although unsuccessful because they move pretty quickly, I still have a blast. Suddenly, someone is tapping me on my shoulder and I pop my head up to see one of the crew members guiding me back to the boat. Making my way back I realize that, as strong a swimmer as I am, I’m pretty happy to have the life vest on as it allows me to keep looking underwater while I make my way back without having to put in too much effort in keeping myself headed in the right direction so all my focus is on the magical world below me. Trampoline for the kids, hammocks for the adults We climb aboard and the teenagers head to the trampoline area (I was told that’s what it’s called). For people who may not normally hang out on a boat, this area serves an engineering purpose but is also a pretty cool place to just hang out on as it’s like a flat stretched-out hammock where you can just lay out and chill. I divest myself of the fins, mask, and vest and realize I’m pretty hungry! Lunch on the ocean Luckily, the food comes out and everyone piles up their plates with tropical fruit, delicious wraps and chips, and salsa, and we head for a sunny spot on the upper deck of the catamaran. We start chatting with other people and decide it’s just about the right time for the rum version of that delicious fruit punch (after all we’re in Jamaica, how can we pass up the delicious rum when no one is driving or diving). My husband opts for a cold Red Stripe instead and leans back to work on his tan. Learning Jamaican dance moves We hear music and a lot of laughter below and realize the trampoline is empty. I decide to leave my husband happily tanning and I follow the music only to discover a full-blown dance class, as the crew is teaching everyone the latest Jamaican dancehall dance moves. Although I feel a little self-conscious when I join in, that quickly fades away as everyone tries their best to match the expertise of the crew. Over on the right, two little girls have their own crew member showing them what to do and they catch on quickly, delighted grins lighting up their faces. I manage to muddle through and I’m pretty sure my sister is going to show these videos to everyone once we get back home for an evening full of a similar level of laughter at my expense. In that moment though, I don’t care. I feel the salt from the sea drying on my skin, my hair is a tousled mess and I’m dancing with my children in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. This, I think, is what happiness is.

First Sunreef 88 double deck catamaran launched

The first hull in the Sunreef 88 range of double deck sailing catamarans has been launched in Gdansk for a European owner, the Polish yard has announced.

This fully personalised multihull superyacht measures 26.82 metres LOA and was styled inside and out by the in-house team at  Sunreef Yachts .

In a statement, the Polish yard added that the design of the Sunreef 88 is “a great display of the shipyard’s non-conformist attitude and a genuine example of an avant-garde sailing catamaran concept”.

Captain Ian Sellers added: "She is a beautifully crafted, fully customised transoceanic catamaran, with superb quality and finish."

The design brief was focussed on three key themes: luxury, performance and privacy. To this end, the Sunreef 88 features more than 300 square metres of living space — an impressive figure for a yacht of this size, proving that bigger isn't always better .

This two-deck sailing yacht will feature an extensive flybridge with a central helm station and plenty of al fresco dining and relaxation spaces. Back aft, the cockpit features a central dining table with seating space for ten guests as well as a second sunbed, making good use of the Sunreef 88's 11.2 metre beam.

The in-house design includes sporty and dynamic exterior lines, as well as a fully customised interior layout. Key features include a mezzanine level in the saloon and a main-deck owner's cabin , which boasts superb views out to sea through panoramic windows.

Auxiliary power comes from a pair of 425hp engines drawing on a total fuel capacity of 8,000 litres, while her total sailplan is in excess of 345 square metres.

Sunreef added that the designers drew inspiration for this single-masted sailing yacht from the 35 metre flagship yacht Che , which was launched in 2010. The Sunreef 88 is the sixth superyacht from the Polish yard, which has also created the Sunreef 102 yacht Ipharra .

Dek Kat Boats Logo

DEK KAT 2680

Dek kat 2680 model.

Meet the new standard in nearshore and offshore coastal high-performance catamaran deck boats. With it’s revolutionary twin tunnel hull design, the Dek Kat 2680 is changing the game for inshore fishing by providing a large, stable fishing platform without sacrificing creature comfort options for the family.

BETTER FEATURES

With ample in deck storage, minimal bow rise on acceleration coupled with a shallow water draft of approximately 12”, the Dek Kat is fast becoming an in-shore guide favorite. At 26’ 2” inches long with a beam of 8’6” there is no other bay boat on the market that comes close to her deck space. The twin tunnels provide a stable and comfortable ride even when the weather is not fully cooperative.

If live bait fishing is your game, the 2680 comes standard with two large in deck live/release wells with the option for additional live wells above deck in the forward seating or in our custom leaning post configuration.

MORE COMFORT

The Dek Kat 2680 is a semi-custom built boat which is just as comfortable on the bay waters chasing trout and redfish as it is at the sand bar with your family. Our oversized hard tops keep the family comfortable with the shade and you will find an abundance of seating throughout the boat, including our custom Adirondack style seat built into the console. Built for fishing and comfort cruising, the Dek Kat is truly one of the most versatile bay boat designs out there. It is ready for whatever your weekend desires are upon the water.

Offshore from the historical white slave huts, learn some Caribbean facts and discover why these centuries-old huts are built next to the sea.

The catamaran approaches the uninhabited island of Klein Bonaire by way of the famous Bonaire Marine Park . Its protected reef makes it a divers' paradise. From up close, you will see Bonaire's most attractive white-sand beach. Its name, of course, is No-Name Beach.

Follow the coastline for exceptional panoramic views, and don't forget to look down into the crystal-clear turquoise water. Oceanfront hotels and restaurants and beautiful Dutch Caribbean mansions line the way back to the port.

Some of the best decking materials include:

  • Wood: Cedar, redwood, and tropical hardwoods offer a classic look but require regular maintenance.
  • Pressure-Treated Lumber: Affordable pine that resists rot and insects but may need staining.
  • Composite Decking: Low-maintenance blend of wood fibers and recycled plastic, available in various colors.
  • PVC Decking: Synthetic option resistant to stains, scratches, and fading, but can be pricey.
  • Aluminum Decking: Lightweight, durable, rust-resistant, suitable for water areas, but more expensive.
  • Vinyl Decking: Low-maintenance, moisture, and rot-resistant, but quality varies.

It’s better to build a patio when:

  • Privacy is a priority: Patio provides a sense of privacy, especially when enclosed.
  • Budget and low maintenance are the priority: Patios are generally more cost-effective to build and require less maintenance.
  • The ground is flat: For even ground, constructing a patio is easier and more straightforward.

It’s better to build a deck when:

  • Scenic views are desired: Decks offer better views.
  • You are fine with obtaining building permits and inspections: Decks typically require permits and inspections due to their structural impact on the home.
  • The ground is uneven: If your backyard has slopes or uneven terrain, a deck can provide a stable and level outdoor space.

  1. Boat Review: Hatteras 60

Hatteras' new 60 Convertible won't need a second chance, because you won't be able to take your eyes off her. Sandwiched right between Hatteras' 54- and 65-footers, the new 60 resembles neither. With a low center of gravity, swept-back bridge, curved lines and elongated foredeck, the new 60 boasts a fresh look for the company's big ...

  3. Review: Hatteras 60 Luxury Motor Yacht

  4. Hatteras M60 (2016-)

While it is the smallest motoryacht that Hatteras builds, the three stateroom/two head yacht 60 is the largest 60-footer on the market. That is because the M60 (formerly the 60 Motor Yacht) has an 18'2" (5.53 m) beam and that width - 2" more than many in class - pays off in many ways. We found her to be as comfortable at the dock as well as underway, and with her flybridge helm there ...

  7. Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht (2012-)

At one time Hatteras built more production motoryachts than any other company in the world. Today it is merely the largest builder of big motoryachts on U.S. soil. For 50 years, through changes in ownership and top management, Hatteras has stayed faithful to core principals of solid boat building, and has always produced top-quality yachts no matter who owned and ran the company. Its legacy ...

  8. Hatteras Yachts 60 Motor Yacht

The Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht is a restyled version of the Hatteras 58 Motor Yacht, the model she replaced in the Hatteras fleet in 1988. In her day, the Hatteras 60 was a real head-turner with flowing lines and a towering double-deck profile. The galley-down interior is roughly the same as her predecessor with the salon open to the lower helm on ...

11. Hatteras GT60

In addition, the new 60 sports one 1,500-gallon integral fuel tank. (The original 60 featured three separate tanks.) This helps the boat maintain her longitudinal center of gravity (LCG) as she burns off fuel. The tank is on centerline and is built in between the stringers, which also means less fiberglass used as the tank is a part of the boat.

  12. Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht

There are very few Hatteras 60 Motor Yachts and, so far, this is the only one in Canada. Kevin Marinelli at Skyline Marina knew I was keen to write this yacht up for our Canadian Yachting readers. He saw a window of opportunity when the owner - who had recently taken delivery in Cape Hatteras and driven the yacht north to the Greater Toronto area - was onboard with the senior delivery crew ...

We topped out at just over 42 knots at 2,300 rpm while burning a healthy 190 gph. Loafing along at 30.5 knots (1,700 rpm), we dropped that consumption to a mere 100 gph. That's with full fuel and water tanks, all of the owner's belongings and our tackle and bait. Churning along at its 2,000-rpm, 36-knot cruising speed, the 60 GT burned 116 gph.
