The Yacht-Master’s new Oysterflex bracelet, developed and patented by Rolex, offers a sporty alternative to metal bracelets. The bracelet attaches to the watch case and the Oysterlock safety clasp by a flexible titanium and nickel alloy metal blade. The blade is overmoulded with high-performance black elastomer which is particularly resistant to environmental effects, very durable and perfectly inert for the wearer of the watch. For enhanced comfort, the inside of the Oysterflex bracelet is equipped with a patented longitudinal cushion system that stabilizes the watch on the wrist and fitted with an 18 ct Everose gold Oysterlock safety clasp. It also features the Rolex Glidelock extension system, designed and patented by the brand. This inventive toothed mechanism, integrated beneath the clasp, allows fine adjustment of the bracelet length by some 15 mm in increments of approximately 2.5 mm, without the use of tools.

To preserve the beauty of its pink gold watches, Rolex created and patented an exclusive 18 ct pink gold alloy cast in its own foundry: Everose gold. Introduced in 2005, 18 ct Everose is used on all Rolex Oyster models in pink gold.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt, sand-blasted background. This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

All Rolex watches are assembled by hand with the utmost care to ensure exceptional quality. Such high standards naturally restrict Rolex production capacity and, at times, the demand for Rolex watches outpaces this capacity.

It incorporates flexible titanium and nickel blades with high-performance black elastomer for optimal functionality and comfort. Rolex debuted the material on one of their most luxurious sports watches - the Everose Yacht-Master. The juxtaposition of the black rubber strap against the lustrous 18k rose gold finish is absolutely irresistible. If you blinked, you might've missed this one in a clip reel supporting this year's oscars. but a double-take revealed what is a brand new addition to the day-date line..

Last night, the 96th Academy Awards were held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California. The lineup of films for this year's show proved to be one of the best in recent memory, and the ceremony did not disappoint. From the watches on the red carpet to those on the stage to those on the silver screen (which we covered here , here , and here ), our little hobby remains strong in the world of cinema.

The Rolex Green Room. 

No doubt, the cross-section of cinephiles and horologists get particularly amped up for the show – and Rolex, the cinema partner of the Academy Awards and sponsor of the Oscar Green Room (because Rolex...green...you get it), knows how to celebrate its history on the screen. And Rolex's inclusion in films over the past near century is quite unique because this is a brand that does not partake in product placement and does not directly engage with the films in which its watches are featured. It's an organic marriage of watches and movies.

And one way the Crown has celebrated that marriage is through its famous video clip-reel which shows countless classic instances of its various models in movies over the years. Yesterday, just ahead of the Oscars ceremony itself, Rolex released a brand new reel. Needless to say, I was here for it, and I am guessing a great many of you were as well. I'll include that video below for your viewing pleasure.

Selfishly, I have to say that this particular video had some personal significance to me. One of the films included in the reel—Jon Hamm in Confess Fletch wearing a Rolex Submariner ref. 1680—was a movie that I personally sourced the watch for. I worked with Prop Master Catherine Miller to find a watch to suit Hamm's character, knowing that he really wanted to wear a vintage Rolex. So, having that watch make the video just feels special. But I digress.

The end of the video finished like any Rolex advertisement you might find when watching a spot for the PGA or Tennis—with a Rolex watch hovering into the frame. In this case, it would be easy to pass it off as an easy-stakes showcase for the Day-Date, which is the watch that was displayed at the end. It was an Everose, 40mm, Roman marker variation with what appeared to be an Ombre or shadow rhodium-type grey dial. 

And then the fanaticism kicked into hyperdrive. That watch doesn't exist, does it? There's no ombré dial Day-Date in rose gold, right? A quick ride through the Rolex inline configurator seems to have confirmed my suspicion. It is a soft-launched, special edition, 2024 Academy Awards Day-Date with what the brand describes as an ombré slate dial in 18k Everose. The only place you can find mention of it on the Rolex website is a landing page for the show, featuring information about every film in the aforementioned clip-reel. There you will find an image of the watch, but no indication that it's new, special, or really any written specs about it.

So, we are left to describe it based on what we see, much like we were when Daniel Craig showed up in New York last year wearing the then un-released white Speedmaster. And what we see with this Rolex, is another great execution of the 40mm Roman marker range. The shadowy change from grey to black plays nicely against the Everose exterior. For those lucky enough to have passed through the Rolex green room during last night's show, they would have seen this watch on display. If I am to be somewhat pedantic, I would have liked to see this watch be some sort of special edition in yellow gold, if for no other reason than it would be a better match with the Oscar statue itself.

Now, this is not the first secret launch for Rolex this year. A few months ago, it quietly released a special Day-Date in celebration of the Vienna Philharmonic with a uniquely playful dial. This comes in the wake of a couple of other "off-season" surprise announces in recent memory, from the Deep-Sea Challenge in late 2022 to the Le Mans Daytona last year . The year 2024 is young, Watches & Wonders is on the horizon, and it is exciting to see what Rolex has in store for us next.

Rolex Teased a New Everose-Gold Day-Date 40 at the Oscars

One of the best watches at the Oscars hasn't even been released yet.

Rolex offered a sneak peek of a new Day-Date 40 in Everose gold at the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday evening. The timepiece briefly appeared at the end of a video the Swiss watchmaker broadcasted before the official awards. The minute-long montage showed several A-listers wearing Rolex watches in different films, but the star was the new Day-Date.

Launched in 1956, the Day-Date was the first calendar wristwatch to show not only the date but also the day of the week. The date is displayed at 3 o'clock under a Cyclops lens, while the day is spelled out in full in an arc-shaped window at 12 o'clock. (The weekday is available in a choice of 26 languages.) The day and date change simultaneously and instantaneously, of course.

The model debuted with a 36 mm case but is currently available with a 40 mm case, too. Both the 36 and 40 are equipped with the in-house calibre 3255. The self-winding mechanical movement offers "outstanding performance" and a power reserve of approximately 70 hours, according to Rolex.

The Day-Date has only ever been made from precious metals, including 18-carat yellow, white, or Everose gold and 950 platinum. The model is always fitted with the President bracelet. Rolex created the bracelet specially for the Day-Date, in fact. As such, the Day-Date is often referred to as the "presidents' watch." As for the bezel, it can be fluted or set with diamonds.

The newest iteration is made of 18-carat Everose gold and features a large 40 mm case. The slate-gray dial showcases a striking ombré effect, classic Roman numerals as hour markers, and day/date indicators.

Robb Report reached out to Rolex regarding the price, release date, and other specifications, but the watchmaker did not immediately respond. We wouldn't be surprised if we saw the Hollywood elite rocking the wrist candy soon, though. The new Day-Date was on display at the Greenroom on Sunday as part of Rolex's ongoing partnership with the Oscars. Nominees and presenters gathered inside the co-branded lounge before and after stepping onto the stage. No doubt the Day-Date would have been in hot demand.

Rolex Previews a New Everose Gold Day-Date 40 at the Oscars

At the 96th Academy Awards , Rolex offered a preview of a new Day-Date 40mm wristwatch, coming in an 18-carat Everose gold build.

The timepiece first made a brief appearance in the video clip that Rolex broadcasted before the official awards ceremony, which served to highlight and celebrate the brand’s presence in cinema. Making up the majority of the one-minute-long video are edits from several films featuring characters wearing Rolex timepieces.

Moscow marks Swami Vivekananda’s 150th birth anniversary

This week, the Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Centre at the Indian Embassy in Moscow, the Ramakrishna Society – Vedanta Centre and the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, jointly commemorated the 150 th  birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

In his opening remarks, India’s Ambassador to Russia Ajai Malhotra dwelt upon the contributions made by Swami Vivekananda, one of the most influential spiritual leaders of the 19 th  / 20 th  centuries. The sage was a social reformer and a great scholar whose teachings influenced many across the globe and continued to do so even today. The Indian ambassador highlighted the message propagated by Swami Vivekananda that “service to God can be rendered by service to mankind.”  

Other prominent speakers on the occasion were Swami Jyotirupananda, Rostislav Rybakov and Mark Mokulsky who highlighted various aspects of the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda and their enduring contemporary relevance.

The Labour Valour Fund honoured Professor Rybakov and Swami Jyotirupananda with awards on the occasion.

Swami Jyotirupananda, president of the Ramakrishna Mission in Moscow, was the first speaker. He emphasised Vivekananda’s role as a fighter for the rights of the suppressed members of society in India. Jyotirupananda reminded that in India that April 15 - the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda – is celebrated not only by holding lectures and functions but also by holding charitable activities. During the 4 years from 2010 to 2014, special attention is devoted in India to helping women and children, as well as other members of society who are in need of support. Within the framework of the programme, children from poor families and orphans are fed, tended to by the doctors and given primary education. Another part of the action is the support of mothers.  There is also a moving exhibition of Vivekananda in train which travels from state to state.

Jyotirupananda reminded the audience that Swami Vivekananda was the first person to suggest spreading the great Vedic wisdom across the world. “Scientists say that a human being is an economical and biological creature,” he said. “But this is not the whole truth. The wise philosophers even before Ramakrishna and Vivekananda spoke against it. The scientists say that they acknowledge the consciousness but they don’t understand its nature.”

Mark Mokulsky, Prof. and Dr. of physical and mathematical sciences at the Institute of Molecular Genetics, Russian Academy of Sciences, followed the discussion about Vievakananda by sharing his hypothesis on the connection between spirituality of Vedanta and genetic-molecular science. Mokulsky is very much interested in the in-depth interpretation of ancient religions. He spoke about a number of signs forming human genetic code and the mysteries ciphered in the ancient Vedic scriptures.   

Another eminent speaker Rostislav Rybakov, Indologist, Dr. of historical sciences and Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1994-2009, elaborated about the relevance of Vivekananda’s teachings to the issues Russia has to face in our day. Rybakov maintains that Vivekananda’s philosophy is very much on the agenda for Russia and Russians of the 21 st century.

He called Vivekananda a man that came from the future to teach people the great wisdom, and people are very slowly and gradually moving towards the understanding of his ideas.

Recalling the recent Day of Cosmonautics in Russia, Rybakov also quoted the legendary Yuri Gagarin who said: “India looks like a big human heart from the space.”  According to Rybakov, such an observation coming from the first cosmonaut shows that India represents the centre of spirituality for the world even at the sceptical epoch of scientific and technological progress.

Professor Rybakov believes that in the past Russia, which had a lot of things in common with India, has lost its traditional values. “Disrespect is one of the toughest issues that Russians have to fight today,” he says. “All kinds of disrespect. Disrespect towards people, towards history, towards law, and, finally, towards ourselves.”

Among the big problems of contemporary Russia, Rybakov singles out a lack of education, and, what he considers even worse, poor education; when a person has heard a little on every subject but doesn’t have profound knowledge on anything. This idea is intertwined with what Alexander Pushkin said in his famous work Evgeny Onegin about Russia’s high society in the 19 th century: “We all meandered through our schooling      haphazard; so, to God be thanks, it's easy, without too much fooling, to pass for cultured in our ranks.”

Rybakov believes that the only path to follow is to educate children from the youngest age, but not simply educating but imbibing them with moral and ethical values that will lay the foundation for their future view of the world. “The way that we need to go is lengthy, torturous and complex,” Rybakov says. But it is the only possible way.”

The finishing stroke of Rybakov’s speech was drowned in enthusiastic applause: “Recently, the French actor Gerard Depardieu has become an honourable citizen of Russia. But, in my view, Swami Vivekananda should become an honourable citizen of Russia, even after his death. We need him very much in our lives today.”

Moscow 1980: Forty years on

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the Opening Ceremony of the Games of the XXII Olympiad, in Moscow in 1980.

The first Games to be held behind the Iron Curtain in a socialist country, they were attended by 5,179 athletes (1,115 women and 4,064 men), from 80 National Olympic Committees (NOCs). Among the participating nations, seven NOCs – Angola, Botswana, Cyprus, Jordan, Laos, Mozambique and the Seychelles – made their first-ever appearance at the Olympic Games.

There were some truly stunning performances in the-then Soviet capital, where athletes competed in 203 different events. Home athlete gymnast Aleksandr Dityatin won medals in every men’s gymnastics event – three gold, four silver and one bronze – becoming the first athlete to win eight medals at the same Olympic Games. At the same time, super-heavyweight Teófilo Stevenson of Cuba became the first boxer to win the same division three times, and Gerd Wessig of East Germany became the first male high jumper to break the world record at the Olympic Games.

Meanwhile on the track, Great Britain’s middle-distance runners Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe went head-to-head in what proved a memorable race. Ovett took the gold medal in the 800m ahead of his compatriot. Six days later, the tables were turned when Coe took gold in the 1500m, while Ovett had to settle for bronze. In total, 36 world records, 39 European records and 74 Olympic records were set at the Games.

The Olympic Games Moscow 1980 are also remembered for a boycott as part of a protest against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979. As a result, some 67 eligible nations refrained from participating in the Games. Some explicitly cited the boycott as the reason, with others giving alternative explanations. Other nations left the decision about participation to the athletes themselves, with several participating under the Olympic flag or the flags of their NOCs rather than their national flags.

As a result, Moscow 1980 was a bitter-sweet experience for many athletes under strong pressure to desist – or even banned – from participating. Although some who forewent the Games managed to maintain their training and participate in the Olympic Games four years later in 1984, others who had trained since Montreal 1976 saw their hopes and dreams of repeating the experience dashed. Still others missed out on what was their only opportunity to go to an edition of the Olympic Games.

One athlete who was unable to participate was the current International Olympic Committee President, Thomas Bach, from West Germany, a Montreal 1976 champion in fencing. Reflecting on the boycott 40 years later, he commented: “This should never happen again to future generations of athletes. And this is what still drives me today, to give all the clean athletes of the world the chance to participate in the Olympic Games.”

In the event, despite many athletes making the ultimate career sacrifice, the boycott failed to achieve its aims as the Soviet presence in Afghanistan lasted until 1989.

President Bach added: “Anybody who is thinking about a boycott should learn this lesson from history; a sports boycott serves nothing. It's only hurting the athletes and it's hurting the population of the country because they are losing the joy to share, the pride, the success with their Olympic team. So, what is a boycott for? It's against all the Olympic spirit. It's against all the values we have in sport and what we stand for in sport.
