SeaDream I Review

Review of seadream i.

The 1984-built SeaDream 1 yacht was constructed by STX Finland (Petter Yran & Bjorn Storbraaten, Helsinki Finland ). Previously, the cruise ship was operated by Cunard Line as "Sea Goddess I". The vessel is in SeaDream Yacht Club's fleet since 2001. The only fleetmate is the sistership SeaDream 2 (1985), with a newbuild planned for the future - SeaDream Innovation (concept superyacht).

The vessel (IMO number 8203438) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 308908000) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

The 112-passenger ship SeaDream I is indistinguishable from the sistership SeaDream II . She was designed for independent, experienced travelers who dislike large ships with kids running around, and all the dressing up - ties are useless here. Inside SeaDream I, there is a feeling of discreet sophistication. The public rooms are elegant and chic, with potpourri and flowers everywhere.

Decks and Cabins

The superyacht SeaDream 2 has a total of 56 staterooms (all are Suites, in 4 grades) and max passenger capacity 112 (plus 100 staff-crew. Most are the Yacht Club Staterooms (54 total, sized 195 ft2 / 18 m2), of which 16x can be converted/connected into Commodore Suites (8 total, sized 390 ft2 / 36 m2).

The ship has no cabins with step-out balconies. The largest accommodations are the Owner Suite (445 ft2 / 41 m2) and Admiral Suite (375 ft2 / 35 m2).

Each stateroom features a marble bathroom (Bulgari bath amenities, plush cotton bathrobes, magnifying mirror, massage shower units), spacious living room, smart UHDTV, CD/DVD system, USB charging ports, Internet outlets, iPod stations, personalized stationeries. Refrigerators and mini-bars are stocked with soft drinks, beers, bottled spring water (all beverages are complimentary).

The boat has 6 decks , of which 5 are passenger-accessible and 3 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

A delightful feature of SeaDream cruises in warm areas is the beach barbecue "caviar in the surf" (land BBQ dining experience). Another benefit is the drinks onboard, which except connoisseur wines and premium brands, are all free. All meals in the Dining Room are open seating, all the time. Breakfast is typically served at the ship's Topside Restaurant. Guests can choose from a small array of fruits, bread, cereals and yogurt at a mini-buffet. Hot dishes are ordered from a menu. Lunch is also served at the Topside, while dinner locales vary.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

SeaDream entertainment options include a Piano Bar, Main Lounge, Boutique, Promenade (on Deck 5), Spa, Gym, Beauty Salon, first-run movies, aft-sundeck's swimming pool and Jacuzzi/whirlpool. The main gathering places for passengers are the lounge, as well as the delightful library and living room. Have a night at the piano bar (also serves as a Karaoke Bar), or stay at the small casino with 5x slot machines and 2x blackjack tables. Complimentary to all tourists are provided snorkeling gear, kayaks, wakeboards, stand-up paddleboards, sailboats, jet skis, Hobie Cats (sailing catamarans), a banana boat, a floating island and a trampoline, as well as electric mountain bikes.

Both SeaDream yachts feature "Top of the Yacht" bars (added during the drydocks in 2001), along with the 8x alcoves set to the starboard and port sides of the Funnel/smokestack (equipped with padded two-person loungers). At the front part of the Sundeck, there are large hammocks, more sunloungers and 2x Jacuzzies (added during the drydock in 2022), as well as a Golf Simulator (with 30+ golf course choices) that doubles as Cinema/Theater.

The superyacht has 1 elevator (midship, interconnecting all decks but 1-CrewDeck and 6-Sundeck) and Infirmary/Medical Facility (hospital and pharmacy, served by a resident physician).

Itineraries

Traditionally for SeaDream yachts, SeaDream 1 itinerary program is based on Mediterranean voyages (homeporting in Civitavecchia-Rome , Venice , Piraeus-Athens , Istanbul Turkey ), as well as Caribbean voyages (mainly 7-days in length) with homeporting in Bridgetown Barbados .

The cruise ship is also open for private charters with custom-designed itineraries.

Following the Coronavirus crisis, both SeaDream yachts restarted operations in July 2021 (Europe/Mediterranean deployment). The Caribbean operations were restarted in November 2021, with SeaDream 2 from San Juan Puerto Rico (Nov 20) and SeaDream 1 from Bridgetown Barbados (Nov 26).

SeaDream I Wiki

SeaDream 1 cruise ship is the line's first of all 2 (for now) top luxury all-inclusive cruise yachts. Her sister in the fleet is the yacht Sea Dream 2 . The ship was built in 1984 and chartered to Sea Goddess Cruises (as "Sea Goddess I" between 1984-1998), as "Seabourn Goddess I" (to Cunard and Seabourn , between 1999-2001) and operated under its current name by the shipowner since 2001.

SeaDream 1 cruises in the Mediterranean (visiting islands and ports in Italy, Greece, Turkey, France / French Riviera , Spain, also the Black Sea) and in the Caribbean (during winter). Transatlantic cruise deals are offered seasonally on the yacht's the Atlantic Ocean repositioning crossings. Some of the itineraries can be combined into back-to-back cruise deals (longer, discount-priced voyages). While generally departures and call port times are pre-set, the Captain can modify the yacht's cruise schedule and adjust those times (even seaports) along the route - if that would please his guests. Also, while most Caribbean cruise ships depart from ports of call in late-afternoon, SeaDream 1 is often departing in late-evening - just to give its affluent guests the chance to enjoy the local restaurants or the nightlife. Many cruise itineraries additionally feature scheduled overnight stays in ports.

The yacht's passenger capacity is only 112 guests, making it perfect for cruise ship charters, that usually serve corporate business meetings, "rich family" reunions, celebrities' anniversaries at sea, etc. On such deals, the cruise itinerary route for the yacht's charter is determined by the booking party.

SeaDream 1 refurbishments review

In 2022 (January and May), SeaDream conducted a USD 10 million (EUR 8,8M) drydock refurbishment project for both yachts at Navalrocha Ship Repair Lisbon (Portugal).

Works included full-scale renovations of all staterooms (new furniture, hardware, textiles, wardrobes, electrical upgrades / USB charging ports, Wi-Fi, fingerprint sensor lights, 55-inch smart HDTVs), all outside deck spaces (premium teakwood flooring, premium mahogany Balinese beds and sun loungers, Loro Piana upholstery and cushions, Frette towels, TUUCI parasols and hammocks), upgraded cabin amenities (woven lines, silk pajamas, silver ice buckets, GioBagnara Miramar trays).

Forward on Deck 6 (Sundeck's sunbathing area) were installed 2x new Jacuzzies and 2x new rain showers.

The aft-located/stern Marina Platform was also upgraded.

Watch: Whale of New Hampshire slams into fishing boat, hurling men into the Atlantic

The men were thrown into the sea off odiorne point in rye, new hampshire after the humpback slammed into them. lucky for them, two teenagers were there to swiftly rescue the men..

A whale was mid-breach when it hit a small boat off New Hampshire, causing the vessel to capsize and hurl two fishermen overboard in a matter of seconds.

Colin and Wyatt Yager, two teenage brothers from Maine on a neighboring vessel, took to social media Tuesday to share the footage, which has been reposted multiple times in the past few hours, according to reporting by Seacoastonline, part of the USA TODAY Network.

One video in particular has garnered over 4 million views and hundreds of comments since it was posted, with a caption that warns area residents to beware of a “pissed off whale” patrolling the waters of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

“Head on swivel if you’re out there,” the caption says.

The teens "swiftly rescued" both fishermen after their boat capsized off Odiorne Point in Rye, New Hampshire, U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson Diolanda Caballero told Seacoastonline.

Wyatt Yager wasn't initially worried about the whale, telling Seacoastonline that all of the boats stayed along the edge of the school of fish so the whale could feed. But it got a little too close to the vessel, causing it to tip over.

"I was just in shock. Everyone else had the same reaction and tried to get over to those people," he said. "It was like, 'Oh shoot,' and then, 'We’ve got to go help these people.' All the boats dropped what they were doing to go over to help them."

Neither the men thrown into the ocean, nor the whale, were injured, Caballero said.

USA TODAY has reached out to the Coast Guard for comment.

'It's been an emotional day,' fisherman says

The Coast Guard caught wind of the capsized vessel Tuesday morning, which had been tipped over in Rye, a few miles northeast of Portsmouth, Seacoastonline reported. The teens were fishing for menhaden, also known as "pogies" a little after 7 a.m.

The whale crashed into Greg Paquette and Ryland Kenney's boat about an hour later after they spotted the aquatic mammal, immediately launching both men into "fight or flight mode" after they were thrown into the water, Seacoastonline reported.

“I heard a big crackle,” Kenney told the newspaper. "When that happened … the bow tipped up and I went to the left and as (the boat) was rolling over I kind of jumped off horizontally to avoid the whale and the boat.”

The last thing Paquette remembers seeing before being thrown into the water was the whale's head, which slammed down on the engine of the boat.

“Then I saw the whole stern become inundated with water and I thought, ‘Oh no. We’re going down. We’re going to sink now," Paquette told Seacoastonline. They managed to swim away from the swamped boat in a matter of seconds and became very tired after the initial "energy and adrenaline" wore off.

"It's been an emotional day," Paquette said.

The men stayed in the Yagers' boat for about 15 minutes, then the brothers dropped them off at a nearby friend's vessel before the Coast Guard arrived, according to Wyatt Yager. Paquette and Kenney were transported to Great Cove Boat Club in Eliot, Maine, after the breach, the two fishermen said.

Both men were in the water for less than two minutes before they were rescued, with 19-year-old Wyatt and 16-year-old Colin stepping in to help.

"We’re glad they took such quick action," Paquette said. "They didn’t even think about it. We’re really grateful to both of them."

Internet reacts, exchanges memes

While the whale seemed to have made a pretty big splash, Colin Yager’s reaction to the “breach” has inadvertently caused the most attention.

Multiple people have commented on Colin’s reaction, pointing out how quickly his instincts kicked in.

“Kid's like ‘I want to go home now,’" one user wrote. Another said, “That kid had the right idea lol turned around and was ready to book it.”

A user named Daisy Evans wrote that the “incredible scene” was the result of “unfortunate timing,” pointing to the way the whale was breaching under a school of baitfish next to the boat.

“You can actually see dozens of fish pouring out of its mouth as it impacts the boat. The whale was not attacking,” she wrote.

‘Three Seconds to Act’: Boater Recounts How Whale Capsized His Vessel

Two boaters in New Hampshire were rescued by nearby fishermen without injuries, and the dramatic flip was caught on video.

Video player loading

By Remy Tumin

Ryland Kenney didn’t get much sleep on Tuesday night because he kept picturing the mouth of a humpback whale.

Mr. Kenney, a fisherman, and his friend, Greg Paquette, were about two miles off the coast of Rye, N.H., that morning when a 30-foot-long juvenile whale lobbed itself onto the back of their 23-foot motorboat, sending the bow of the boat skyward and Mr. Kenney and Mr. Paquette into the water.

All three parties, including the whale, were uninjured, the United States Coast Guard said, but Mr. Kenney couldn’t stop playing the episode in his head, seeing the whale “resting its head on the engine.”

Mr. Kenney, 44, and Mr. Paquette, 54, are experienced fishermen, Mr. Kenney said, and the two had been out the previous few days because the fishing had been the best they’d seen in a decade. They’d also seen what they believed to be the same whale, which was feeding on bait fish in the area.

On Tuesday morning, they waited for a heavy fog to clear and left Eliot, Maine, on the New Hampshire border, just after 5 a.m. in search of the schools of bait. They encountered the whale once again.

“I’ve tried to be as safe as possible and fish outside the bait school,” he said. “You don’t want to be in the center of the biomass for the bait because that’s likely where the whale will come up. We were on the edges — a lot of boats weren’t.”

The whale breached several times throughout the morning. As it moved closer in search of bait fish, the fishermen moved the boat further away.

But just as Mr. Kenney started to reel in a striped bass around 7:30 a.m., he saw the whale pop out of the water about 100 feet behind them. He kept his eyes peeled for further movement but didn’t see anything. Then there was a sound.

“All of a sudden in the back of the boat I hear a rumbling of the ocean right behind the boat,” he said.

Within moments, the whale’s head popped up, its mouth open, likely trying to scoop up the bait fish it was feeding on.

“As it collapsed onto the boat, the mouth closed and smashed the top of the motor and I heard a big crunch,” said Mr. Kenney, who still had a rod in his hand. “I had three seconds to act. I wasn’t scared, I didn’t have time to be scared.”

As the whale weighed down the stern, the bow started to rise, and Mr. Kenney had to quickly decide how to get off the boat — if he moved too far toward the front, he risked having the entire boat capsize on him. So he edged himself to the middle until he felt the boat start to fully tip, threw his rod overboard and jumped into the water, all within a matter of seconds.

The cold North Atlantic water shocked Mr. Kenney and his breathing became labored as he realized Mr. Paquette was nowhere to be seen. Eventually Mr. Paquette popped up from under the boat in a life vest and started to swim toward Mr. Kenney. The two embraced.

“That’s when I started to feel calm — I’m with my friend, let’s get to safety,” he said.

The dramatic flip was caught on video by Colin Yager, 16, who was out fishing on another boat nearby with his brother, Wyatt. Mr. Kenney and Mr. Paquette were in the water for only a few minutes when the Yager brothers sped over to rescue them. The Yagers transferred them to the boat of a friend, who took them back to shore.

If no one had been around, Mr. Kenney said, he wasn’t sure they would have survived.

“The night before it happened, my family asked if I was worried about a whale landing on the boat and I said, ‘The chances of it happening are like getting struck by lightning,’” Mr. Kenney said. “Of course, the next day lightning strikes and a whale lands on us.”

Dianna Schulte, a co-founder and director of research at the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation in Portsmouth, N.H., confirmed the whale was a humpback likely feeding on bait fish.

“It’s feeding season for many large whales, like humpbacks, who don’t eat during their winter breeding season in the Caribbean. This whale wasn’t ‘angry’ — it was hungry,” she wrote in a statement posted to social media . “Boaters happened to be in the area at the same time.”

“If you see a whale, don’t approach it, or leave your fishing line in the water,” she added. “Lines can entangle whales, and whales can damage your boat.”

In an email, Ms. Schulte said her group had not been able to match the whale in the video to an animal seen in those waters before.

Humpback whales, often found close to shore and known for balletic breaches, are a favorite of whale watchers. They inhabit all major oceans, and during the warmer months, they spend most of their time feeding and building up fat for winter.

Mr. Kenney said he learned a few bait-fishing lessons on Tuesday: If you think you’re at a safe distance, add another 50 feet; do not leave your home port without a life vest on; and make sure other boats are nearby. The boat they were using, which belonged to Mr. Paquette’s brother-in-law, was mostly unscathed but would need a new engine, he said.

For now, Mr. Kenney plans to take some time away from the water and work on his own boat. As luck would have it, he ordered a new tool in the days before Tuesday’s episode: a sophisticated radar system — one that can alert the proximity of whales.

Surfers enjoy 1st-ever floating Olympic village, staying in suites at sea in French Polynesia

The boat is anchored 45 minutes from Teahupo'o, the competition site.

Surfing made its Olympics debut at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Games in 2021, but this year, the sport is already making waves with a first-of-its-kind floating Olympic Village, where the surfers will sleep at sea and wake up with pristine ocean views in French Polynesia for the 2024 Paris Games.

Social media has been overflowing lately with athlete POV videos showing off everything from team gear clothing hauls from Nike, Ralph Lauren and Skims to room tours testing out the infamous recyclable cardboard beds at the Paris-based Olympic Village. But when it comes to the accommodations for the oceanic-based sporting event in French Polynesia, it appears some of those athletes have already struck gold before they ride the iconic Tahitian waves at Teahupo'o.

One such video from first-time German Olympian Tim Elter that showed off his suite on the Aranui 5, the dual-purpose passenger and freighter ship that is housing the surf competitors, has amassed nearly 2 million views on TikTok.

"We got asked a lot about the cardboard beds in the floating village in Tahiti," Elter says in the video, while panning across the panoramic view from his balcony overlooking the striking blue water and lush green island before walking into the bedroom. "We don't have cardboard beds. We actually have real, aluminum bed frames that are solid and stable -- so yeah, we've got it better than the guys in Paris."

The Aranui 5 reflects Polynesian heritage throughout its interior and features 103 spacious cabins, eight guest decks, an outdoor swimming pool, a spa, a gym, a restaurant and lounges, according to Aranui Cruises . The custom-built vessel is anchored less than 45 minutes from the big wave competition site at Teahupo'o, where surfing will get underway on Saturday, July 27.

Team New Zealand's Saffi Vette, 22, shared another video of the ship on TikTok , with Michael Jackson blasting aboard as she and the team of Kiwis arrived to the floating Olympic village by dinghy.

"POV: German team welcomes you into the Olympic villa...ge," she wrote in text overlaid in the video.

In a follow-up selfie video taken on her balcony that has so far garnered 7.4 million views and counting, Vette and her fellow Olympians are seen laughing and dancing to Gotye's hit, "Somebody That I Used to Know."

"Vibes are high here on our floating Olympic Village," she wrote in the caption with a laughing face and heart hands emoji.

Couple in homemade yacht who died and washed ashore in a life raft could have been hit by larger ship, experts suggest.

Experts have offered theories about how a thrill-seeking Canadian couple’s attempted transatlantic sailing expedition turned tragic last month, positing their homemade vessel may have been struck by a much larger ship soon after they departed Halifax on the country’s North East coast.

Earlier this month, the bodies of Brett Clibbery, 70, and Sarah Justine Packwood, 54, were found on a life raft washed up on Sable Island, Nova Scotia.

The area is ominously nicknamed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” due to the large number of shipwrecks that wind up on its shores.

Brett Clibbery, 70, and Sarah Justine Packwood, 54, wearing red jackets and smiling broadly.

An official investigation is underway, and although no concrete answers have yet come to light, one leading theory is that their boat was badly damaged by a much larger vessel, forcing the couple to seek refuge in the life raft.

“While they do not have conclusive proof, [investigators] suspect the sailboat … was struck by a bulk carrier likely only a few days after departing Halifax,” a source close to the investigation revealed to Saltwire .

Investigators have reportedly inspected a carrier ship that was in the same area as the couple’s boat — named Theros — at the outset of its voyage, but the results of the probe have not been released to the public.

“The crew of the carrier ship told investigators there were no signs of damage and they were unaware of any collision with a smaller vessel,” the Daily Mirror writes.

The source surmised that the ship’s homemade additions might have presented additional problems, and veteran sailors told the outlet the excessive ballast from batteries and solar panels could have destabilized the boat.

Brett Clibbery sips tea from a mug on a boat.

The pair set sail June 11 on a journey that was supposed to take them across the Atlantic Ocean from Halifax to the Azores in their 42-foot yacht, which the couple built themselves.

The eco-friendly boat, which operated without a diesel engine, was due to arrive at its destination by July 2, to serve as a demonstration of how it’s possible to travel the world with electric, wind and solar-powered vessels.

The excursion was to be the couple’s first fully “green” journey on Theros, the building of which the couple chronicled on their YouTube channel, “Theros Adventures.”

Despite the swirling theories about how the doomed voyage turned deadly, the Canadian transportation safety board has not made any formal announcements indicating what happened

“At this time, we cannot say with complete certainty that the sailing vessel was struck by a ship, as we are still gathering information regarding the overdue sailing vessel Theros,” a spokesman said.

Sarah Justine Packwood smiles and looks back towards the camera on a boat.

Clibbery and Packwood married on the yacht in 2016, one year after they met during a chance encounter at a bus stop in London, England.

Packwood was preparing to donate a kidney to her sister when she met Clibbery, who was visiting from Canada — a heartwarming story that was the center of a  2020 “How We Met” piece in The Guardian.

“We have been traveling and co-creating adventures ever since,” Packwood previously posted on YouTube.

Clibbery’s son, Brett, posted a loving tribute to the couple on Facebook, acknowledging the last few days had been really hard for the family, and news to emerge from the investigation has left it “hard to remain hopeful.”

He continued, “They were amazing people, and there isn’t anything that will fill the hole that has been left by their, so far, unexplained passing.

“Living will not be the same without your wisdom, and your wife was quickly becoming a beacon of knowledge, and kindness. I miss your smiles. I miss your voices. You will be forever missed.”
