How to Make Beaded Sea Glass Wind Chimes DIY Step-by-Step Tutorial with Photographs

sailboat sea glass wind chime

Either create a graduated sea glass wind chime where the middle strand of beads hangs down longer than the rest (like the sea glass wind chimes shown in the photographs), beaded strands that hang in a slant to the left or the right, or sea glass wind chimes that all hang at the same length.

No matter what type you choose, the directions to make a sea glass wind chime are all the same, but you will have to do some math. For this reason, making beaded sea glass wind chimes is a great STEAM project for homeschoolers–scroll down to the bottom of the tutorial to learn why!

Homemade wind chimes also make a lovely piece of DIY garden decor. You may also enjoy making sea glass suncatchers . Scroll down to the bottom of this post to see a list of other garden crafts you can make with the kids.

DIY sea glass wind chime with cowbells garden craft project with tutorial

1. Drill holes into a piece of driftwood, bare branch, or large wooden dowel rod.

  • Use a measuring tape or ruler to measure the length of the driftwood or bare branch you are working with, and drill 3 to 9 evenly spaced holes.
  • The photographs for this sea glass wind chime show five holes drilled approximately three inches apart. And the five holes are centered in the middle of the 19-inch piece of driftwood.
  • As I said, you will need to take some measurements and do some math to complete this DIY garden project. The distance between each beaded strand will depend on the driftwood, bare branch, or wooden dowel length and the number of beaded strands with cowbells you would like to hang on it.
  • If you use a large wooden dowel rod to make this garden craft, it is optional but recommended to stain and protect the wood once the holes are drilled. Apply wood stain and sealer with a foam brush and allow it to dry before moving on to the next step.

2. Cut sections of the monofilament line for each beaded strand.

  • Cut 3 to 9 sections of monofilament or fishing line. You will need one piece of fishing line for each beaded sea glass strand that you would like to hang from the driftwood. Either copy our example in the photographs shown here–or do the math to make it however you wish.
  • For this sea glass wind chime DIY, we began with five strands of monofilament line between two and two and a half feet long.
  • When finished, the sea glass bead strands for the DIY wind chimes in the photographs measured 12, 14, and 16 inches long.
  • In other words, we beaded two 12-inch strands, two 14-inch strands, and one 16-inch strand to make the sea glass wind chimes shown in the photos.

3. Attach cowbells to the end of each strand of the fishing line.

Use a crimp bead (or tube) and a pair of crimping pliers to attach a small (or large) cowbell to the end of each strand of the monofilament line cut in Step 2.

  • First, place a crimp tube (or bead) onto one end of the monofilament or fishing line.
  • Next, place a cowbell on the end of the monofilament line.
  • Then, tuck the short end of the monofilament line into the crimp tube next to the long end of the monofilament line, as shown in the photos below.
  • Gently push the crimp tube towards the cowbell to decrease the diameter of the loop.
  • Use crimping pliers to squeeze the crimp tube shut around both pieces of monofilament line to hold the cowbell in place.
  • Trim off the excess monofilament line, and repeat the steps above until all sections of the fishing string have a cowbell attached to one end.
  • When all sections of the monofilament line have cowbells, move on to the next step.

How to attach a cowbell to end of string on Sea Glass Wind Chime DIY.

4. String the sea glass beads onto each strand of monofilament string.

  • String the sea glass beads directly onto the long end of the monofilament line attached to each cowbell.
  • Monofilament line, or fishing string, is sturdy enough to string beads without a sewing needle. (You can also use it to make gorgeous suncatchers and simple beaded necklaces and bracelets!)

  • Use one color, create a varied color pattern, or randomly string the sea glass beads onto each strand in any way you wish–just like our daughter did for this simple DIY garden project. The photographs below show her beading the sea glass strands for this homeschool STEAM project.

5. Attach the beaded wind chime sections to a piece of driftwood or bare branch.

  • First, thread the top of each bead strand through the piece of driftwood to attach each strand to the wind chime. In other words, pull the beaded section of the monofilament line up and through the driftwood until the sea glass beads are flush with the driftwood.
  • Then, place a crimp bead onto the monofilament line (above the driftwood), followed by one last sea glass bead.
  • Next, wrap the monofilament line around the bead, tuck it into the crimp bead, and back into or through the driftwood.
  • Then, hold the crimp bead and sea glass bead as you pull on the end of the monofilament line, and continue to push the crimp bead and sea glass bead until both are closer to the driftwood.
  • Finally, use a pair of crimping pliers to close the crimp bead shut and lock the sea glass beads and wind chime strands into place.
  • Cut or trim off any excess monofilament line if needed.
  • The sea glass bead on top of the driftwood will ensure that each beaded wind chime strand stays firmly in place. And it also gives this garden craft a pretty pop of color along the top edge of the driftwood, bare branch, or wooden dowel.
  • Look at the photo tutorial below to see how to do each step in this process.

How to attach each beaded strand to the DIY Sea Glass Wind Chime.

7. Make a hanger for the sea glass wind chimes.

  • First, cut a long section of heavy-duty string, rope, or garden twine to make a hanger for the sea glass wind chime.
  • Next, tie a square knot at one end to attach it to the driftwood (or bare branch).
  • Keep wrapping the garden twine around that same end of the driftwood 6 – 12 times to cover the knot.
  • Then, tie another square knot on top of it to secure the wrapped garden twine in place.
  • Leave 2 – 5 feet of slack (depending on how long you would like your wind chime hanger to be) and tie a square knot on the other side of the driftwood.
  • Then again, wrap the garden twine 6 to 12 times to cover the knot on the other side.
  • Next, tie another square knot on the wrapped twine or string.
  • Finally, cut the twine and tuck the loose end into the wrapped garden twine.
  • Look at the photo tutorial below to see how to make a garden hanger for a windchime.

Step 6 - wrap twine around driftwood or bare branch to hang beaded sea glass wind chimes.

Making Wind Chimes is a Great STEAM Project Idea for Homeschoolers

Just because young children shouldn’t be making DIY wind chimes alone doesn’t mean they can’t help! We are raising a self-sufficient kid , so we invite our daughter to help with household chores and simple DIY projects like this sea glass windchime.

Plus, making wind chimes is a great STEAM project for homeschoolers. Working on simple crafts like these hanging chimes means that we also get to sneak in a few homeschooling lessons as we work–due to the basic engineering, measuring, and math involved in the process.

Our daughter helped us decide on the basic design for our DIY wind chime, which meant she had to do some math, measuring, and counting. And she created the beautiful beaded art shown in the photographs.

She strung each sea glass bead onto each strand of the wind chimes while my husband and I drilled the holes in the driftwood for the wind chime and created the twine hanger.

Did you know that stringing beads to make a beaded wind chime (or any other beaded project ) is also a great way to improve hand-eye coordination and develop the fine motor muscles of the hand?

Projects like this can help build and strengthen the muscles in hand necessary for writing and other handwork projects like sewing a pocket pet mouse .

But don’t tell the kids they are learning or that it has anything to do with school. Or they might not want to help you make it. Let’s keep it our little secret. 😉

So I decided to drill holes in my sea glass. Now I’m having troubel with the strands getting tangled. Can you give me some advice. Thanks

Hi Colleen, I’d be happy to help, but I’m a little confused. I used sea glass beads to make the sea glass windchime pictured, but you said that you had to drill holes in your sea glass. Can you explain how the strands are tangling so I can get a better idea of how to help?

Sea Glass & Seashell Wind Chime DIY

June 21, 2022 by Patti Estep 15 Comments

sailboat sea glass wind chime

Learn how to make a seashell and sea glass wind chime with simple materials in just an afternoon. This wind chime was inspired by the movie, "The Choice." This DIY wind chime not only makes a relaxing bit of music when the wind blows but it looks beautiful too.

Seashell wind chimes with sea glass and beads.

Have you read any Nicholas Sparks books? Or, have you seen any of his movies? Surely you have at least heard of "The Notebook." Well, I like them very much and in a world of negativity and sadness, there's nothing like a Nicholas Sparks story to lift the spirit.

You see these stories always have a happy ending. I like that, and while I was watching "The Choice" recently on TV, I was inspired to make a seashell & sea glass wind chime. Just in case you ever want to watch it, I won't spoil the significance of the wind chime.

  • Clear Fishing Line
  • Seashells (with holes drilled through the top)
  • Sea glass pieces
  • A small empty can with the lid removed
  • Chain for hanging (you could use wire or twine)
  • Beads (optional)
  • Paint to cover the can (optional)
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Chances are that you already have everything you need to make this project. I really love sea glass crafts and I knew that I had some pretty sea glass leftover from my Sea Glass Garden Ornament project.

I also had leftover chains from the Hanging Fruit Basket Challenge . Anyone who has ever fished probably has a slew of fishing line, and I used an empty clam can to hang the strands of seashells and glass.

Seashells and seaglass laid out in a pattern to make the wind chime.

How to Make a Seashell and Sea Glass Wind Chime

Layout your shells and sea glass in a pattern. This is where your creativity can shine. Make them as long or short as you wish. You need to make sure that there are enough strands close together so that they hit each other in order to make the chime sound.

DIY wind chime top made from a clam aluminum can and a chain for hanging.

Puncture a hole just large enough to fit the chain through, using a screwdriver and hammer. No drill is needed.

Duct tape is used to tape chain to can for the homemade wind chime.

Use a little tape to secure the chain. I used duct tape but any strong tape should work.

Measuring the can for holes to hang strands of seashells and seaglass

Measure the can, and divide the circumference by the number of strands you want to make. I chose to make 5 strands, and my can was 10.5 inches, so 10.5 /5 equals 2.1 inches. Place a dot just past 2 inches all around.

Then make a hole at each dot. I tried a nail and hammer but that was difficult. Believe it or not, a paper hole punch worked. It really doesn't matter how you make the holes though. You could even drill them.

Fishing line is thread through a hole at the top of the seahell

Make a small hole at the top of each shell with a thin nail and a hammer. Do this from the inside with the shell on a table to prevent breakage. Start with a shell you don't like to practice and then continue with the rest. You can also drill holes with a small drill bit for this step.

Cut a piece of fishing line to a length several inches above your shell pattern and below. You can always cut the excess later.

Tape down the fishing line to a table, leaving several inches above the tape.

Then thread your first shell, starting at the top. Hold the shell and fishing line in place with your thumb and fingers, and place a drop of hot glue on the inside of the drilled hole, on top of the fishing line. Hold for a few seconds and set down.

  • Take the next shell and space it a few inches below the first one, leaving room for the sea glass, and place a drop of glue over the inside hole and fishing line.
  • Continue until you are finished with the strand. Repeat the process with the other strands.

Wind chime strand with alternating seashells and seaglass.

Add the sea glass by placing a line of hot glue on the glass and setting it in place under the fishing line. Add additional glue on top of the fishing line.

Five strands of seashells and seaglass on fishing line for the DIY wind chime.

  • At the bottom, you can add a bead, by threading through the fishing line and tying it off with a double knot.
  • Paint the can with craft paint if desired, then once dry thread the top of the strands through the holes in the can at the length you want and tie off with a couple of knots.

Hang your beautiful Seashell & Sea Glass Wind Chime on the porch or patio and enjoy.

Omg this I am meant to make this. I literally just finished watching The Choice and loved the windchime for the movie and started looking for diy sea glass windchime's. I have been collecting sea glass and shells for years now, this will be a great way to use some of it. Thank you!

I'm now inspired to make one! My question: is the hot glue strong enough to hold everything if it is displayed outside? Have yours held up outdoors for years? Thanks.

Beth, it hasn't been years but it has been hanging outside for a while now with no issues.

Hello, I am totally new to arts & crafts and apologise in advance for this silly question...but what glue do you use that is hot? Many thanks, The Newbie 🙂

When I say hot glue I mean I'm using a hot glue gun. You can find them any place that sells crafts. Even hardward stores sometimes sells them. Thanks for stopping by, Patti

Brenda, I had no problem. I used fishing line from an old rod in our garage and standard hot glue. I guess it is possible that the fishing line was some kind of heavy duty line but I hope that it works for you.

September 11, 2016 at 5:38 pm

If you have left over shells you can glue them on the tin can for a more beautiful look

July 30, 2016 at 12:19 pm

Do the shells come pre-drilled or do you have to drill them? How?.

Isn't fishing line strong enough to tie.through the holes in the shells? I've never fished, but I would think tying a metal hook on, then landing a huge, fighting fish would require strong line...stronger than a spot of glue.

I don't have a porch but.I think I have to buy some of those "shepherd's crook" stakes at the garden supply, so I can start a "windchime garden" near my patio. Oh, and I must read "The Choice" while.I listen to that garden "sing" to me.

July 30, 2016 at 4:13 pm

I drilled them. It was really easy with an electric drill and a small bit. I place the seashell on a piece of wood and drilled straight through. Yes, you could tie the shells on instead of gluing them but I personally was worried about the fine fishing line getting all tangled up so I decided to glue it. I also think your shepherd hook idea is a great one. I have a homemade rain chain on one of mine in the garden. Hope you enjoy your chimes and the book. Patti

Patti you are so amazing with all your talents - I love this project! I agree with happy endings and seem to be seeking them. I'm currently watching a Hallmark series that began with Love Comes Softly - produced by Michael Landon Jr. Anyways a time frame I probably should have been born in and so comforting with all the chaos of the world we live in today. I need that escape from it all and the sound of a wind chime is a great escape. Thanks for sharing this project!

July 10, 2016 at 7:34 am

So glad you liked the project. We are working on our porch so I think it will be a nice addition. By the way, I love that series on Hallmark. I've watched several of them in the past but I think there may be more. Thanks for reminding me about them. I'll have to check it out!

  • Drill (optional)

Begin by printing the free printable template.

It will print on two pages. Using some transparent tape, layer the edges over each other and tape the two sheets together.

Then tape the template to your table or work surface, so it doesn't move.

Begin by sorting the different-sized seaglass pieces onto the template. Use the gray squares as a size reference tool.

Once all of the sea glass pieces are placed you can play around with the order.

Do you want the colors random or do you want them to go in an ombre effect?

I decided on the ombre look.

Down the center of each column of squares is a line. This line is a guide for the fishing line.

Above the template, tape a strand of fishing line. Pull it down past the other end of the template, tape the end down, then cut the line.

Repeat for all 5 columns.

To glue the fishing line to the sea glass pieces, use the E6000 glue and apply a dot of glue over the fishing line at the top and bottom of each sea glass piece.

Let the glue dry for at least 30 minutes.

When the glue is dry, leave the strands of fishing line taped to the counter and flip all of the glass pieces over so the fishing line is now on the bottom.

Lay the second strand of fishing line over the top of the rows of sea glass just like before.

Again, glue the line to each sea glass piece at the top and the bottom with a dot of E6000 glue.

Let the glue dry for 30 minutes.

Stick Topper:

For the top of the wind chime, I used a stick that I cut to 12 inches.

If you have the tools, drill a hole about a ¾-inch in on each side.

Feed the rope through the holes and tie knots to hold the ends.

Don't have a drill that's ok too, simply wrap the rope around the end of the stick and secure it with a knot.

Each method will work just fine, but if you are going with the wrapping method you will want to use a thinner rope.

Lay the wood piece along the top of the sea glass columns.

For each strand of sea glass, the top strand of the fishing line should go on top of the piece of wood, and the bottom strand under the piece of wood.

Tie a knot, right over left and then left over right, around the wood piece. This type of knot will make it so the length of the rows can still be adjusted.

Hang the wind chime and adjust the sea glass columns. You want them close enough to "clink" when they hit each other but not so close that they are on top of each other.

To make them shorter, tighten the not at the top. To make them longer, pull on the strand.

Once the columns are in place, apply a dot of E6000 glue to the knots to keep them secure,  and to the wood, a piece to hold the columns in place.

Trim the ends of the fishing line, close to the bottom of the glass pieces, and at the top near the knots.

All that's left is to hang your new DIY wind chimes in the backyard or patio, grab your favorite refreshing drink, and relax outside on that comfy chair! After all, you've earned it!
