Three weeks ago my wife disembarked from our first MSC cruise, 14 nights Yacht Club onboard MSC Preziosa around the Caribbean.

I have now written what I consider a full, frank and comprehensive review on our experience. Here is the link...

I'd be delighted to answer any questions.

Thanks

Thanks Richard and Barbara. Very comprehensive and useful.

WOW!!  Great review.  Very thorough and insightful.  Loved all the pictures. We were to do YC Prezioza this June but, had to cancel until next year. Still looking forward to doing our cruise. Now, we are more excited for next year.  Thank you so much for taking the time to post such a wonderful review.

It was your review, all those years ago, that gave me the original inspiration and idea to take my wife to Guadeloupe: I'd filed it in the memory bank.   Had you not appeared here I would have asked Wansbrough to pass on the link and thank you.   And as you probably noted from my review, we've already booked another MSC cruise.   Keep safe.   Richard

That's an endorsement for MSC if ever I saw one.

it is heartening to see and  partly makes up for all the bashing i got on C.dot for flag waving for MSC .

A yacht Club experience would have been out of their depths Pete.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review.  Feeling kind of low these days, what a pleasure it was.  I shared it with my husband and he also enjoyed it.

We have our first Yacht Club experience coming up in October and are looking forward.  Thanks again!

Hi Solent Richard........read your review with interest as we were aboard the Preziosa a month before you , 21st January.  Our reflections were somewhat different although I would agree that  Marie-Pierre and Summit were excellent, they were our butler and restaurant waiter as well.  We were fortunate to stay in 15031 just up the corridor from you, next time try to get one of these large square cabins as they are 50% bigger than the one you had, we even had a sun lounger on the balcony as it is so much bigger.

I would double check that your Virgin flight from Gatwick to Barbados was a charter.  Our MSC / Virgin Flight was a Scheduled flight (VS029/VS30) as MSC this year were taking a block of seats not the full allocation.  It is important as you will be able to claim Virgin Flying Club Air miles which we did, Premier gave us 8432 air miles (worth about £125).

We cruised Preziosa last year as well and the difference was astonishing, for the worse. The quality of the meat in La Palmeriae was extremely poor and like yourselves we dined in Butcher's Cut where the meat was superb but boy-o-boy did we all suffer in the YC restaurant, even 'Summit' advised us not to have many dishes as the complaints were endless.

The Gazebo you mentioned was erected due to the complaint about the food on offer at the One Pool during our cruise. You benefited from the change of YC Directors, the new YC who change midway though our cruise (Thierry Fnu) made many changes which improved the situation.  The problem is you don't know which YC Director you are going to get, some are a disgrace to MSC.

We also booked for Yacht Club 2021 and have subsequently cancelled, just not worth the money anymore.

Cool Cruiser

Just thought I would add some feedback from our recent cruise.

My better half and I were on the cruise following Solent Richard, 3rd – 17th March in the YC. Flew VS29 ex-Gatwick – I will agree with Mickey89 that the flight is part MSC booked, but not completely as I noted several Virgin Holidays tags on baggage. We were heat tested before we entered the terminal at Barbados airport. No issue, quick and first of several such tests during the next fortnight.

Our view of the cruise was it was overall fantastic and we would both book it again in a flash. The itinerary leapt out of the page when we spotted it over a year in advance; so nice to see smaller islands and not the run of the mill ex-Miami mainstream ports.

We sailed Divina in YC in 2018 (Med 7 day cruise) and felt that the YC restaurant on Preziosa exceeded comfortably that we experienced on Divina. Sumit was out waiter too and a credit to MSC. Food taste is subjective, but when I read Mickey89's feedback I thought I was on the wrong ship. Maybe the change in TC Director impacted the food standard too, as it was pretty faultless.

We have travelled quite often in the Haven and our experience on Divina clearly awarded the restaurant medal to NCL, but on Preziosa we felt it was materially improved and at least equivalent to Haven, but with a far better choice as each day offers a new selection. Preziosa also offered three “everyday” options not listed including spaghetti bolognaise and filet.

One Pool chef always had a gazebo erected. We always breakfasted either at One Pool or TSL, never the restaurant. Lunch was normally at One Pool when not ashore. Always a good choice and always chef specials.

We too are Death in Paradise fans and took a tour with Merva, as mentioned by Richard in his report. An excellent day and one of our favourite private tour experiences without a doubt.

St, Kitts, Dominica, St. Vincent (Bequia) and St. Maarten we really enjoyed too.

The cruise had no Italians on board when we joined (some 550 would typically have been on board), but MSC had already reacted to the CORid-19 outbreak it seems. The first 11 days went as planned, but on the second weekend both Martinique and Guadeloupe only permitted disembarking guests to leave the ship at the end of their cruises. No new guest’s joined that second weekend. Transit guests were not permitted to leave the ship. Each day there were less remaining guests St. Lucia was cancelled and we had a slow sail to Barbados sea day on the last Monday. We have no issue with this, what else can MSC/ports do in such circumstances. My only issue would be the lack of communication from the captain – being more familiar with NCL we are used to daily dialogue from the captain, even in normal circumstances. It was notable the captain never delivered such daily updates, either during the normal phase of the cruise nor during the latter agenda impacted phase. Strange.

As I stated above we would rebook the YC without a doubt – we would book the same cruise again and same ship. The YC versus Haven is an interesting debate often seen on CC; we like both and both have pro’s and con’s we feel. I like the TSL, my wife less so; we both like the One Pool bar/eating area; Haven has more room options and is more family focussed (family suites), but generally is a lot more expensive; champagne included in the YC is a nice bonus. First world problem, but both being nice to experience.

Thanks for your input Mickey. Much appreciated.

I hear what you say about Thierry Fun, the YC Director, I got on with him like a house on fire.

Good afternoon HAD.

Humble apologies for not responding sooner and many thanks for your comprehensive addendum: it made very interesting reading, particularly the comparison with NCL's Haven.

Up till this cruise we were ardent Cunard Grills fans and while I'd never abandon them entirely we thoroughly enjoyed our 'Maiden' MSC. The real advantage for us is the wider itineraries on offer with MSC.

So pleased you gave Mirva some business and I trust you enjoyed Sainte Honore as much as we did: You'll never believe the 'brownie' points I received from my wife.

Funnily enough we were due to fly to Split this morning to join an Emerald Waterways cruise along the Dalmatian Coast. Just so pleased we made the full Preziosa when we did.

Take care and thanks again for your input.

Solent Richard's Cruise Blog

Welcome aboard and nice to meet you. My wife and I are seasoned cruisers having first dipped our toes into the world of cruising in 1990, a one week cruise on board the Cunard Countess. The majority of our cruising has been with two cruise lines, Cunard and P&O. We have, however, sailed on 21 different cruise ships, some many times over, on 11 different cruise lines while completing 619 cruise nights on board.

MSC Preziosa – Yacht Club Experience

My wife and I have recently returned from a cruise that gave us our first experience sailing with MSC….

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…onboard the MSC Preziosa…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and a chance to evaluate their Yacht Club facility.

This cruise was initially chosen for one particular reason: MSC are one of the few cruise lines that visit the island of Guadeloupe…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…which was amongst the 12 other islands this cruise visited, all in the course of 14 days.

And our reason for wanting to visit Guadeloupe?

My wife is a huge fan of the UK TV Series, Death in Paradise, and it was an ambition of hers to visit the village of Deshaies and surrounding area where the series is filmed. More about this in the ‘Itinerary’ section of this review.

Our package also included Virgin flights from Gatwick to Barbados which we later discovered was basically an MSC charter with an MSC ‘Registration’ desk at Gatwick Airport..

On arrival at Barbados the MSC organisation was equally slick and very good.  We were very soon allocated to a coach and transferred to the ship.

MSC pride themselves in offering the highest level of service to their ‘Yacht Club’ guests and this became apparent the moment our coach pulled up at the Bridgetown Terminal Building. As ‘Yacht Club’ guests we were greeted outside the terminal building and escorted to a reserved area and offered refreshment including champagne and chocolates while our booking details were checked…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…including an enquiry as to which UK national newspaper we preferred (more about that later).

I’d like to mention at this stage that we had at the time of booking also availed ourselves of MSC’s offer to match, for new MSC cruisers,  any cruise line’s loyalty scheme. This meant, by transferring our Cunard World Club status, we kicked off with MSC as ‘Diamond’ members…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

I would certainly urge anyone considering an MSC cruise to avail themselves of this relatively easy to achieve process.

Having completed the formalities in the terminal we were introduced to our ‘Butler’ and escorted onboard. Our first stop was the Yacht Club Concierge Lounge where once again drinks were offered and the Senior Concierge gave a short briefing on his services before we were then escorted to our suite.

We had reserved, at the time of booking, a YC1 Deluxe Yacht Club Suite number…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

The ‘Suite’ was a generous 344 Sq Feet with spacious storage …

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…a walk in Wardrobe…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…Balcony…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and ensuite bathroom …

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…with full size bathtub, marble sink unit with more than ample storage beneath…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and a good selection of bathroom toiletries…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

As a Yacht Club suite, all beverages are complimentary. Drinks and nibbles in the suite are replenished daily along with the fruit basket…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

We were to discover that we were in for some excellent nights sleep with the suite’s ergonomic mattress bed, fine sheets, and pillow menu…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

I would add that it was only on arrival in our suite that we first set sight on our cruise cards. At this point we had not been asked to give any form of credit card authorisation, though we were requested to activate our ‘onboard account’,  within 48 hours, at one of the many machines around the ship: one of which was perfectly positioned adjacent to the Concierge Desk…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

The Yacht Club on MSC ships is is effectively a ‘ship within a ship’…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…access to which is controlled via one’s cruise card…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

On Preziosa, the main Yacht Club facilities included The Concierge, The Topsail Lounge,  The One Pool and the exclusive to Yacht Club guests restaurant, La Palmeraie.

The Concierge

msc yacht club msc preziosa

An area consisting of a central desk and a small lounge …

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…complimented with  a useful Library…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Amongst the many services that I noted at the Concierge desk over our 2 weeks onboard was the making of reservations at restaurants,  issuing ship’s  excursion identification stickers for Yacht Club guests and coordinating butler escorts for those heading ashore with ‘private’ excursions.

The Topsail Lounge

Adjacent the Concierge Desk is the entrance to the Topsail Lounge…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…complete with an excellent bar…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and barista service…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

The Topsail Lounge proved to be our ‘social hub’ whether it was meeting friends for a pre-dinner drink, enjoying the panoramic views or just popping in for some light refreshment…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Indeed, the lounge offers a continental breakfast service from 7.00 am to 11.00 am while from midday there are continuous selections of delicious snacks available.

High tea  was served between 4.00 and 6.00 pm,  when a  butler in full dress uniform offers a  ‘white glove’ table  service…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

For evenings there was always a programme of musical entertainment featuring various artistes who also performed around the ship…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

The Topsail Lounge is an outstanding facility, not just for the exclusive position and  view, but the excellent service, facilities and of course, convenient proximity to one’s suite.

The One Pool Deck

msc yacht club msc preziosa

I never quite figured out why this area was named as ‘The One Pool’: it seemed to me a strange anomaly as it really is a very good exclusive Sun Deck for Yacht Club guests…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…complete with pool…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…two jacuzzis…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and a bar and dining area…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Apart from the normal bar opening hours, a snacks buffet was available throughout the day from 7.30 am to 10.00 pm while between midday and 3.00 pm individually prepared cooked lunches were available from the chef’s Gazebo…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

On numerous occasions we received invitations to either Cocktail or Sailaway Parties at The One Pool…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

They were all good fun and, in the main,  gave us a chance to meet and chat to our fellow English Yacht Club passengers…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and particularly enjoying the music and early evening balmy Caribbean  atmosphere…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

The final piece in the Yacht Club jigsaw was the dedicated ‘Private Restaurant’, La Palmeraie…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

A dedicated ‘open seating’ restaurant with superbly indulgent menus where guests can dine at leisure. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner this was a classy facility with staff to match and was certainly up there on a par with Cunard’s Grill restaurants…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

A selection of dinner menus…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and a selection of dishes we ordered, including an Asparagus and Baked Tart starter…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

and Beef Carpaccio…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

All meals were accompanied by a good selection of complimentary wines…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

A selection of main courses we chose, including Fillet of Sea Bass…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Veal Ossobuco…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

And Octopus and Cuttlefish Stew…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Once a week the menu featured a selection by Michelin Chef Harald Wohlfahrt…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…seen here The Halibut and Carrot Mousseline…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…with Enoki Mushrooms.

Desserts were excellent, the genuinely homemade Tirimisu…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…featuring almost every night, while other offerings included the decadent ‘Opera Cake’…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and the prepared table side Crepes Suzette…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

And for those who crave cheese there was a first class selection on the Cheeseboard…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…every evening.

Our overall experience in La Palmeraie was simply awesome. The staff under the direction of maître d’hôtel Vicenzo Cinque and his assistant Ena, were truly exceptional and I make no apologies for mentioning the stand-out waiter, Sumit…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…who was a credit to MSC.

Life onboard

It would be easy to confine this review to the Yacht Club’s facilities but that is not our scene. We very soon discovered that there was a variety of entertainment to be found around the ship and we were determined to make the most of it.

With membership of the Yacht Club comes a number of additional benefits. Most important amongst these was the fact that you can order unlimited premium all Inclusive drinks, not just in The Yacht Club but from any bar around the ship.

Central to the entertainment has to be the Platinum Theatre…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…which, for Yacht Club guests, had a specially reserved section on the theatre upper level…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

We found the ship’s Production Show Team…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…amazing. Over the 14 days onboard we watched 10 different production shows…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and as can be seen from the above photograph there is a cast of 26 performers. During many shows an interval was programmed in for a number of incredible ‘ Cirque du Soleil’ style performances…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

including this amazing balancing piece where the guy walked up the stairs with his partner balanced by one hand on his head…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Great Entertainment.

And if that was not enough we often met the performers again as they led the entertainment at the numerous late Deck Parties…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Musical entertainment certainly featured throughout the ship and one was often spoilt for choice whether it be in the Mixology Bar, The El Dorado…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…at the large aft  entertainment centre, The Safari Lounge…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and the Atrium & Preziosa Bar…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

But by far our favourite for variety and atmosphere was The Green Sax…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

A great variety of music, reasonable dancing space plus the addition of two attractive ‘dance hosts’…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

We additionally found an excellent venue for those who may like to indulge in a little people watching. Il Cappuccino…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…is the ship’s speciality Coffee Bar and is delightfully positioned on the edge of the Atrium on Deck 7…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Also a great venue for that night cap, an ‘Italian Coffee’…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

There were two occasions when we ventured into dining areas that weren’t the preserve of Yacht Club guests. The first was the….

msc yacht club msc preziosa

an American-style steak house serving select aged Linz heritage Angus beef and a selection of other dishes…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Earlier in this review it was mentioned that we had utilised the  MSC offer of transferring another cruise lines loyalty points. Well apart from the numerous (4) parties we were invited to this proved an immensely interesting benefit…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

We made our reservation through the La Palmeraie maître d’hôtel who, to our surprise, arranged for the ‘Butcher’s Cut’  restaurant manager to brief us on the menu…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience dining at ‘The Butcher’s Cut’…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…having been given a window table…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…our meal was further complimented by a good Malbec…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…choosing for starter a Baked Goat’s Cheese Tart…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and two different cuts of Steak…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…cooked exactly to our taste…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and followed by a most tasty dessert, Chocolate Lava Cake…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Our second outing to dine elsewhere was when we thought to try a pizza lunch in the Inca Buffet…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

An impressive selection of 5 different pizzas to help oneself…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and while there I couldn’t help noticing an impressive array of sauces on another counter…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Something for everyone.

What also impressed, apart from the variety of available food, was the waiter service. having found your table just press the buzzer…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Cheers then, Pizza done…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Well not quite. There actually is a separate Pizza restaurant onboard, the…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

While being highly recommended for its high quality pizzas it does actually carry a surcharge to dine there…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

However, as Yacht Club guests we discovered a loophole. We could order room service, any item, and there was no charge. The butler even came and laid up our table with cutlery and poured the wine…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

And finally while covering entertainment, we did on two evenings end up in the Galaxy Disco…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…though surprisingly we found it a shade lacking in atmosphere…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…possibly due to the absence of a good DJ.

One bar that we did pass on numerous occasions and would have been tempted to use was the Al Fresco Garden Bar…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…aft on Deck 15. There was often good music ‘under the stars’ but this was the only bar where smoking was allowed which kind of precluded our patronage. We did on one occasion, however, give the patrons a dance exhibition in between some good banter with our musician friend ‘Scorpion”.

That basically ends our Yacht Club experience onboard Preziosa and it is time to move on to the…

As mentioned in the introduction this was a 14 night cruise with NO sea days…

We were scheduled to call at 12 ports, two of them, Fort de France , Martinique and Pointe a Pitre , Guadeloupe) twice.

Three of the ports would be ‘maiden’ calls for us ( Pointe a Pitre, Kingstown and Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago) . Others we had mostly been to on many occasions, some done to death.

Our first port of call , on Wednesday 19 February, was Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…one of the ports that was new to us. But we had a plan…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

We wanted to see the area around Woodford Square which included The Red House…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Originally dating back to 1844,   The Red House is the seat of Parliament in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

Also bordering  Woodford Square is Trinity Cathedral…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…with its fascinating stain glass windows…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and sacred stone labyrinth…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Our main focus though was to see the Magnificent Seven…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

The Magnificent Seven are group of seven mansions located west of the Queen’s Park Savannah in the northern part of Port of Spain and is a group of architectural gems that in their heyday were a sight to behold. We saw all seven – here’s one or two examples to add to the Queen’s Royal College above and include Ambard’s House…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…Whitehall…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and Stollmeyer’s Castle…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Port of Spain was a good start to our itinerary and my wife’s Fitbit tells me we covered a total of 9.73 miles that day.

Our second port of call,  Thursday 20th February,  was Saint George, Grenada. ..

msc yacht club msc preziosa

One of the Caribbean islands we had visited most, the first time being in August 1990 while on our first ever cruise onboard Cunard Countess. But in all those visits not once had I climbed up to…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…which dominates the town and has a bit of history…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

There are some pretty good commanding views to be had as well…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…including out towards Grande Anse beach where we usually spend our visits…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Our third port of call, on Friday 21st February, was Kingstown ,  Saint Vincent and The Grenadines…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

We had a plan that would entail a walk to Fort Charlotte which we spotted as we sailed into Kingstown…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Fort Charlotte is a British-colonial era fort standing some 601 feet above sea level, and checking my camera’s timings we did the climb…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…in an hour and 21 minutes…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

We certainly enjoyed the spectacular views over Kingstown and back towards the ship…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

The fort enjoys a panoramic view of the Leeward side of the island, including Kingstown, Young Island, the Caribbean, Bequia and the Grenadines.

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Our fourth port of call, on Saturday 22nd of February, was Fort de France, Martinique…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

It had been some 30 years since we last visited Fort de France and well before digital photography had gripped my interest. So this visit was looked at in the light of it being a first and the necessary research was duly undertaken and a map of our targets to see produced…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Not quite as accurate though as this was one of those ports where MSC embark new passengers and, as such, we berthed at a terminal that I had not anticipated, in the port area to the right of Fort Saint Louis…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

It proved no great problem, the walk from the ship to the Bibliothèque was only 20 minutes and that included time to stop and photograph the ‘mess’ of iguanas along a road side waterway…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

We easily made it to the Bibliothèque Schoelcher…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Built in 1887, this public library houses the works collection of the abolitionist Victor Schoelcher…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and was pretty fascinating to visit…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

The Bibliothèque also helped us with our bearings for our planned ascent of Chapelle du Calvaire…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…seen standing on the hill overlooking the town: central on the above photograph. It turned out to be not as simple as it may look as we needed to navigate a number of streets and blocks to find the path which leads up to Chapel…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Having arrived at the top…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…the views made the climb well worthwhile…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

On our return to the town we took in a visit too The Pavillion Bougenot…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

which is Martinique’s most famous old colonial building and the former home of sugar plantation  owner Emile Bougenot.

I should point out here that as Martinique is an insular region of France, where the  €uro is the currency it is also worthwhile noting that those visitors with European roaming mobile phones can utilise their monthly allowance without any further charge.

Our fifth port of call, on Sunday 23rd of February, was…

  Pointe a Pitre, Guadeloupe…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

We’ve made it . In retrospect this was the island that was initially the sole reason for us booking the cruise. And why?

Well my wife is a great fan of the television series, ‘Death in Paradise’, and it is on Guadeloupe, in and around the village of Deshaies, that the series is filmed. There were initially a number of obstacles to be overcome for us to get to Deshaies . It is some 41 Km from Pointe a Pitre and while there is normally a local  bus service they don’t run on Sundays – the day we were visiting. Research directed us to a local tour guide, Mirva Lempiainen, whose web site is…

http://guadeloupeguide.com

…who, due to other commitments, couldn’t accommodate us on our dates. He did,  however,  recommended another tour guide, Krisztina Kovacs…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…who can be found via Facebook..

https://www.facebook.com/karibialmok/      or email…     [email protected]

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Our visit to the garden complete we headed back into Deshaies for a full and  leisurely visit to those places that feature in the series…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

And it was here that our luck really was in. The Saint Honore Police Station film set was actually open to visitors…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

What an opportunity…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…we couldn’t believe our luck…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Naturally our next set to visit was to head down to Saint Honore’s beach and Catherine’s Bar…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…Cheers…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

But we weren’t finished yet, there were a number of beaches to see on the way back to Point a Pitre, first the aptly named Grande Anse…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…where Krisztina successfully managed to negotiate me a part time job at one of the local ChiChi stalls…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…before moving on to  Plage de la Perle…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…which is the location for the ‘ Caribbean Detective’s beach hut home’, though,  as we knew before leaving the UK, it is dismantled after each series shoot.  Not to worry, we got the feel of the place…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Thanks also to Krisztina’s efforts and outstanding navigation we even managed to return in time to see parts of the Point a Pitre Annual Carnival…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Thanks once again Krisztina for giving us an outstanding service and  wonderful day:  and especially for your patience with the camera man.

FOOTNOTE: So good was our day out in Guadeloupe that I have written a FULL review of our first day in Guadeloupe and visit to the set of ‘Death in Paradise’. Here’s the link …

Death in Paradise

Our sixth  port of call, on Monday 24th February, was Road Town, Tortola…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

One Caribbean island we have done to death on both cruise ships and on a two week shoreside villa holiday. But apart from adding to my collection of Preziosa photographs…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…there was a specific purpose to our getting ashore. Two years ago, while visiting onboard P&O’s Oceana, I found an electronics shop in the Tortola Pier Park and got a great deal on a Nikon camera…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

On this visit I was delighted to find they had the full range of Apple 11 Pro iPhones and was delighted to do an excellent business deal  with Teddy…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

After a few beers at the Coconut Lounge…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…all I wanted was to return onboard and play with my new boys-toy.

Just one other point of interest though. This was the second port in six days that we had found ourselves tied up alongside Fred Olsen’s Braemar…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…which was at the centre of one of the unfortunate coronavirus scares.

Our seventh port of call,  on Tuesday 25th  February, was Philipsburg, St Maarten…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

St Maarten is another of those Caribbean islands vying with Tortola, Grenada and St Lucia that we have lost track of the number of visits. This for us was a good day then to clock up some walking and steps on my good lady’s fitbit while taking in a few local hostelries on the way…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

I have to confess though that I had an urge to be photographed with  a pair of big beasts…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and actually enjoyed watching and listening to the rousing choruses and whistles directed at us by passengers as Symphony of the Seas set off before us…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Our eighth port of call, on Wednesday 26th February, was Roseau, Dominica…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

You guessed it, we’d been here before…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…on Queen Elizabeth in December 2010…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…so I can’t complain at MSC parking out at crap berths. But once again the walk did us good.

And on this occasion we did find Roseau’s ‘Old Prison’ which eluded us on the last visit…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…or at least, what is left of it…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Some things do change however. Back in 2010 we enjoyed a fun afternoon at a bar named CocoRico…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

It’s still there but trading somewhat differently…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

On this occasion the ‘Ruins Rock Cafe’ proved a much more exciting prospect…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…if not exactly packed…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Our ninth port of call, on Thursday 27th February, was Basseterre, St Kitts & Nevis…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

On previous visits we have done both beaches and historical sites such as Brimstone Hill Fortress…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

On this visit though , apart from our daily exercising of my wife’s fitbit, photography was again the order of the day. One task was to try and capture the ‘Town Clock’ uninterrupted by vehicles negotiating the roundabout. Success at last…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

We also had some fun along the waterfront watching the pelicans feeding off scraps thrown by a local fish vendor…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and investigating an older style cruise ship that was berthed on Basseterre’s new jetty…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

The ‘Freewinds’…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…is in matter of fact a floating recreational and training facility for the Church of Scientology…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

She has an interesting history. Launched in 1968 as the MS Bohème  she had a disastrous start to her cruising life. Her maiden voyage from Stockholm to Miami was cut short when she hit an underwater obstacle in the Stockholm Archipeligo.  Her hull and fuel tanks were breached and lifeboats were used to evacuate all passengers from the listing ship and three days later she was refloated and towed to the Finnboda shipyard for repairs.

Our tenth port of call, on Friday 28th  February, was St John’s, Antigua…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

We were on a mission. As with Grenada and Tortola, on our more recent visits to Antigua we had preferred days on the beach. We had however, in 1990, visited onboard the Cunard Countess and had taken a tour of Shirley Heights and English Harbour. That was before the advent of digital photography and that needed to be rectified.

Once ashore we negotiated with a local taxi guide for a days private tour.

Our driver, Paulson , turned out to be not just knowledgeable on the islands best view points, but also a walking, talking cricket encyclopaedia…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Whatever, we achieved everything on our list plus a number of other places of interest that Paulson had up his sleeve. Our main places were the view over English Harbour from Shirley Heights…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

The Blockhouse…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and the view over Eric Clapton’s home from The Blockhouse…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and a bit of zoom…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Next up was Nelson’s Dockyard…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…taking the best it has to offer…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…while additionally having a little fun ourselves…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Our tour continued along the coastal road stopping at a number of beaches including Curtain Bluff…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and Valley Church…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…before we returned to St John’s in time for a few beers at the waterfront ‘Harbour View Bar’…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Cheers Paulson, a great day out.

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Paulson can be contacted and pre-booked via email:     [email protected]

Our eleventh  port day, on Saturday 29th February, was a return visit to Fort de France on the island of Martinique…

I arose early, and as it turned out, just in time to see the seaward side of Fort Saint Louis…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

We retraced our steps from the previous week’s visit as far as the La Savane…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…a 12½ acre park fronting the Fort-de-France Bay. Formerly known as ‘Jardin du Roi’ its original purpose was to harbour scientific experiments on plants that were new to the colony at that time.

The statue above is of Pierre Belain d’Esnambuc the French trader and adventurer who, in 1635,  founded the first colony in Martinique. However, his statue is not the one that attracts the greatest interest. That honour goes to the one in the park corner adjacent the Bibliothèque , of the ‘headless’ Josephine de Beauharnais, first wife of Napoleon and Empress of France…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

A short walk from La Savane can be found the island’s former colonial Palace of Justice, the renamed Espace Camille Darsières…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…fronted by a commemorative statue of Victor Schœlcher, with a child on the way to education.

And maybe a hundred yards down the road, Fort de France’s Saint Louis Cathedral…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Having inspected the cathedral internally I could not resist a photo shot at the reflection opposite…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

We completed our DIY tour walking along the waterfront and circumnavigating Fort Saint Louis from the landward side…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Our twelfth  port day, on Sunday 1st March, was a return to Pointe A Pitre, Guadeloupe…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…and we planned a beach day.

The terminal operates a ‘taxi office’ point that, certainly on a Sunday, is run as one of the finest cartels your likely to meet away from Salalah . But never mind, we are on holiday and we joined ten others in a mini-bus for the 30 minute ride to the town of Sainte-Anne…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

….and the Plage de Bourg…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

While we had a good time we would, with hindsight, have chosen to pay a little more and returned to one of the beaches we had visited the week previously. On our return to Pointe A Pitre we spent a pleasant hour walking around some of the sights we missed on the previous week’s visit, including the Saint-John-Perse Museum…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Housed in a spectacular silver-latticework structure on the site of the former Darboussier sugar factory on Pointe -à- Pitre’s long-neglected waterfront is The Memorial  ACTe

msc yacht club msc preziosa

It is a contemporary museum offering historical exhibits on the Caribbean’s slave trade & indigenous people and, on that subject, while walking towards it we also discovered this poignant wall mural to 1967 May Massacre…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…when, on 26 May 1967 , French police opened fire on striking workers in Pointe -à- Pitre.

Our thirteenth  port day, on Monday 2nd  March, was a call to Castries, St Lucia…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

We were berthed at Pointe Seraphine on the opposite side of the harbour to the main town…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

Castries is another of those ports that we have visited many times and done many excursions so, once more, it was time to clock up the steps on the fitbit…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…so off we set and eventually completely circumnavigated the harbour which afforded an opportunity to capture some great images of the ship…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…before stopping at a bar for some light refreshment…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…to aid our walk back to the ship.

Day 15 sees us returning to where we started this cruise, Barbados…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…but this was to be unlike any other disembarkation we have undergone. Indeed, it was so relaxed to be almost surreal. We had received very clear and detailed information on procedures and timings the main thrust of which was that we could remain in our suite till 10.30 am and then proceed to the ‘Top Sail Lounge’, where there was a full range of services,  until called for our transfer to Bridgetown airport.

This relaxed procedure wasn’t just applied to Yacht Club guests either. I spotted this board detailing Colour Tags disembarkation times…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…while walking on the deck mid morning. Also worth noting that our luggage, which had been placed outside our suite the previous evening, would not be seen until we arrived at the airport.

All in all a very impressive disembarkation and MSC are to be congratulated.

Where do I begin.  Well to say we were bowled over by the level of service we received would be an understatement. The whole cruise was excellent and our enjoyment simply proved way beyond our expectations.

Okay, this was in MSC’s Yacht Club and you pay for it but it just felt that in so many ways they went beyond expectations across the board.

For instance I had no idea that we would be offered our own personal choice of UK national newspaper…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…delivered usually before 7.30 am. Being an habitual early riser there was something almost decadent sneaking out of the suite and enjoying excellent coffee and a croissant in the Top Sail Lounge while reading a UK Newspaper before I would have we been home…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

The ability to order complimentary drinks anywhere on the ship opened up the social horizons and to have your suite ‘nibbles’ replenished daily was just awesome.

Equally impressive was the ‘Butler’ reception at each port. Whether it was a Gazebo at the gangway…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

or a private facility in a terminal…

msc yacht club msc preziosa

…there was always the cold towel, a selection of iced drinks and chocolates on return to the ship.

Of all the services however, the one that most impressed was the ‘Escort Ashore’. We only availed ourselves of this on one occasion and that was in Guadeloupe when we had booked a private tour: the service operates equally for ship’s excursions.  Simply head to the Concierge Desk 15 minutes before the tour or excursion and be escorted ashore by a butler, avoiding any gangway queues or delays.

Food I’ve covered and, suffice to just repeat,  the La Palmeraie Restaurant staff and food were outstanding and certainly on a par with Cunard’s Grills.

And so to the the usual final question. Would we cruise with MSC again?

Simple to answer, yes we would and from what we saw outside of the Yacht Club we’d even consider that option should an itinerary on a ship with no Yacht Club  appeal to us: indeed we have already booked for 2021 where a 10 day itinerary with 4 maiden ports to us was on offer.

If you have enjoyed this review of our experiences onboard an MSC cruise ship and would like to be amongst the first to hear of new reviews: including two new experiences for my wife and I, an Emerald Waterways Luxury Yacht Cruise along the Dalmatian Coast and an  Emerald river cruise along the Danube,  plus P&O’s latest offering, Iona, as well as   Solent Richard’s next port guide review of Salerno   in his ‘One way to do…’ series, why not join over 600 followers by clicking on the ‘Follow’ link on the front page.

Disclosure to potential conflict of interest:

It is common throughout the travel industry for travel journalists and many cruise bloggers to be provided with complimentary cruises for the purpose of their reviews.

Solent Richard has no ‘conflict of interest’ as he is not an accredited journalist, he pays for his cruises, and is happy to confirm that all his reviews are his own given without fear or favour.

Wow! Another fabulous review from The Solent’s! Thank you!

Thanks Richard a great review.

Thanks for your blog Richard! We too love the Death in Paradise series and really enjoyed your photos of the Honore Police Station and Catherine’s Bar! Thanks for fulfilling your wife’s dream visit!

Anyone thinking of taking a cruise probably voted for donnie t-rump. Hey, there are millions of idiots out there, maybe you’ll fill the ships!

Hello Bill in Lockport, New York. I’d be delighted to help the cause The Donald as we in the UK are great fans of his particularly as he’s made those Europeans sit up and start paying for their own defence. Have a nice day.

Hi Richard, Thank you so much for your blog, I found it really interesting especially as I have been nervous of trying MSC having previously been Celebrity and Silversea cruisers. However your blog had definitely reassured me and I would now give it a go in the Yacht Club for sure. Hopefully this terrible Coronavirus will spare us all to cruise again.

Stay safe and happy

Fabulous review and photography as usual. Thanks.

Dear Richard – I always read your blogs with much pleasure and interest. I admire their detail enormously and envy your energy and enthusiasm – both of you so lovely.

There is something important to point out about The Yacht Club – in my case on MSC Seaview on 13th May – immediately after my 80th Birthday Party in the theatre at the V&A where my theatre company performed.

I booked direct – cabin 18013 and all went much as you describe.

I’ve cruised alone on almost every cruise line for over fifty years without anything but joy. I’m confident in joining tables whether of couples or singles and have always found people to spend time with.

So, having left everything in my cabin – kitted out in dark brown including the ceiling – I found my way to the club restaurant. I expressed a wish to be on a table of eight if possible. Oh no, the maitre d’ said – you will be dining alone. Why, I asked her. We don’t join tables at the Yacht Club. I’d like to leave this ship right now, I said. We were still in port. No, she said. You will meet people round the pool. This seemed invidious to me but, unfortunately, I demurred. I did meet one family to join for the first night – they took pity on me – then they disembarked and I ate every single meal alone after that. It rained most days, the pool area was deserted, and no effort was made on my behalf.

I booked directly with MSC, had long chats with countless personnel, and never, in any discussion or printed literature, was the fact that Yacht Club is not run like a usual cruise, mentioned.

It was miserable from start to finish. Concierge were sympathetic but could do nothing.

I met some other couples who thought that they were going to celebrate various anniversaries with new-found friends and they were disappointed also.

I’m just hoping that other single travellers don’t get tempted to try MSC Yacht Club after reading your excellent review.

Any other cruise line will take care of their lone travellers but, particularly, the new Saga Cruise Ships for those over 50 with 109 beautiful single cabins and a great atmosphere on board.

In terms of travelling on MSC without the Club – you’re braver than me. I now find the crowds a bit oppressive but, in years gone by, I cruised MSC and Costa although preferring Sea Dream!

Well – we’re not allowed to cruise now so I suppose it will be a while until a new blog appears but, perhaps, you could send us some recent ones as we now have more time to read.

All v. best wishes – Angela M.

Thank you so much Ms Marber. I am in your demographic exactly, and your advice is greatly appreciated!

Thank you very much for the great review.

We are trying MSC for the first time, We wil be on the Preziosa In December for the 8 night Rio de Janeiro cruise.

The detail of this blog will be of great benefit to others, not only to those going on an MSC cruise but also to those visiting the places you visited should they be with a different cruise line. It is astonishing to see how much time you have taken and how much detail you have gone into which at the end of the day is to help others, I am sure many will be very thankful to you. It also gives great pleasure to see how much you enjoyed your cruise. I have cruised with MSC one time and recently had a cruise booked which was then cancelled. My experience onboard was similar to yours, I cannot fault it and have memories which will last a lifetime. The crew were wonderful, always made me feel like an individual, it was an excellent all round experience. I had a lot of problems when I reserved the first cruise with MSC, their website would not function with iPhone, contacting them was impossible and they would not reply to emails, it was a terrible experience and I said I would never book with them again but once onboard, as previous, I could not fault them, so I booked again, that was a mistake. I again had horrendous problems which cannot be blamed on the virus as the problems started before any restrictions or cases onboard cruise ships. They would not respond to emails. When I phoned them they would be very polite and helpful until they realised that the problems were there fault, rather than trying to resolve the problems they just put the phone down on me. It is very sad that the shoreside of the business is so bad and yet the seagoing side is so good. I would go further than not recommending MSC, I would say avoid at all costs due to their diabolical customer service shoreside. If only they would address the shoreside of the operation things would be so different. I have sailed with other cruise lines and never had any reason to complain about anything.

Thank you for your comment Tony. Very sorry to hear you have had a bad experience with MSC Administration. I believe my mate Steven is in touch with you regarding assistance.

Wow! I’m so jealous! We did same cruise in December 2019 and my biggest dream was to visit Death in paradise set. We booked MSC excursion to botanic gardens and deshesries. Disaster! Port strike caused 2 hour delay getting off ship and further hour delay leaving port. Gardens beautiful but coach journey to beaches a metal sign fell from luggage rack hitting me on head and causing concussion! MSC excursion staff did not deal with this well! We just drove past police station set and had to return to ship. I very much enjoyed seeing your photos!

MSC Preziosa Yacht Club Deluxe Cabin. My video tour, photos and review

by Gary Bembridge · March 26, 2013

Watch: click here

The Yacht Club is a ship-within-a-ship concept on-board the large “Fantasia” Class ships in the MSC Cruises fleet. On the Maiden Voyage of the MSC Preziosa I travelled as a guest of MSC in one of the staterooms in the Yacht Club. It was a Deluxe Yacht Club room (15003). In my video review and tour you will  hear me talking a bit more about what the Yacht Club is, and then take you on a your of the cabin

Positives : Plush room, comfortable, good choice of TV channels and interactive TV, great butler service, free mini-bar, free daily paper, small but handy balcony to chill out on, decent storage space – and access to all the other Yacht Club benefits like quiet spaces, dedicated lounge, restaurant and deck with pool.

Negatives : I would recommend you do not stay in 15001, 15003 or 15005 as underneath these the Spin Classes are held in the gym. At 8am and 5pm each day the music from the class is heard loudly in the room. I have mentioned this to the MSC people as think it is easily solved by moving the spin class further back in the gym. So it is possible this issue will be addressed – but to make sure avoid these rooms.

In another posting I will take a tour of the Yacht Club in more detail to share more about the premium experience on the MSC Preziosa.

Everything you need to know about MSC Cruises cabins and suites

A relative newcomer in the North American market, MSC Cruises is equal parts elegant and kitschy. The line tends to appeal to a wide swath of cruisers, from Europeans who like to party into the wee hours of the morning to American families who book because of affordable fares and "kids sail free" pricing.

To satisfy its diverse passenger base, MSC offers accommodations to fit all types of travelers. Rooms include inexpensive inside cabins that sleep two people, midlevel staterooms with windows and balconies, and high-end suites that offer cruisers with larger budgets a private oasis in the form of the MSC Yacht Club .

A variety of connecting rooms and cabins with extra bunks accommodate larger groups and families who wish to share space.

Because your cruise cabin will be your home away from home for several days, it's important to book one that fits your needs. That's especially true if you're sharing it with several people.

Whether you're looking at an inside cabin for a cruise with friends, balcony accommodations for you and your significant other or a suite for your family, here TPG breaks down what you can expect when you book a room on one of MSC's ships.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

MSC Cruises cabin primer

MSC Cruises has become one of the fastest-growing lines in the cruise industry, with about two dozen ships in its fleet. The vessels fall into six classes : Lirica, Musica, Fantasia, Meraviglia, Seaside and World.

Although cabin offerings can vary from ship to ship and class to class, the standard types remain the same: inside, outside, balcony and suite.

Additionally, you'll find the same basic amenities in each room, unless otherwise noted below. They include two twin beds that can be joined to form a queen- or king-size bed; an in-cabin bathroom with a shower, a sink, a toilet and basic soap, shower gel and shampoo; a couple of nightstands; a chair or sofa; a desk/vanity; a closet; a safe; a hair dryer; a minifridge; a phone; USB outlets and a selection of both North American and European outlets.

On all ships except MSC Lirica, MSC Opera, MSC Sinfonia and MSC Armonia, you'll also find an interactive TV that allows you to view the daily schedule, check your onboard account and choose from a selection of live TV programs and movies.

Twice-daily room tidying is provided by a room steward assigned to each cabin, and room service is available throughout the day for an added fee.

One confusing aspect of MSC's bookings is that you'll have to select an experience package in addition to a cabin type. Package tiers determine things like your ability to choose a specific cabin and preferred dining time and whether you'll receive welcome amenities in your room. Certain cabin types are only available in conjunction with certain package experiences and vice versa. Those are noted in each respective section below.

Accessible cabins , including accommodations for wheelchair users, are available on every ship in MSC's fleet. In addition to more space, they feature wider doorways and lowered sinks and toilets in the bathrooms, as well as grab bars.

MSC Cruises' experience packages

Here's what you get when you book each of MSC's three experience packages, which determine the perks you'll receive on your sailing.

  • Accommodations
  • Complimentary food in the dining room and buffet
  • Broadway-style theater entertainment
  • Access to the onboard gym, pool and kids club
  • MSC Voyagers Club points
  • One for-fee change to your cruise booking (with some restrictions)
  • Drink package discount at time of booking
  • All Bella perks
  • Choice of specific cabin and location
  • One free change to your cruise booking (with some restrictions)
  • Ability to choose between early and late seating for dinner
  • Room service (complimentary for breakfast, but fees apply for other meals)
  • Discount on pre-cruise specialty dining package
  • All Fantastica and Bella perks
  • Flexible My Choice dining, which lets you eat at any time you choose between set hours
  • Free 24-hour room service delivery
  • Pillow menu
  • A welcome package, including Prosecco and chocolates
  • Complimentary access to your ship's solarium and thermal area
  • A 10% discount on all spa treatments purchased on board
  • Special Balinese massage offer when booked pre-cruise
  • Complimentary use of bathrobe and slippers
  • Priority boarding and luggage drop-off

Inside cabins on MSC Cruises ships

Inside cabins — rooms with no windows — are available on all ships in the MSC fleet. Ranging from 140 to 301 square feet (depending on the ship), they make for great sleeping because they're so dark. They're also ideal for passengers who are on a budget.

In addition to the standard amenities mentioned above, they provide room for anywhere from two to four passengers to sleep. (Rooms that sleep more than two feature bunks that pull down from the ceiling.)

These cabins are available with the line's Bella and Fantastica experiences.

If you're sailing solo, some MSC vessels offer cabins for one outfitted with a twin bed that converts into a couch. These interior studio accommodations are only available with the Bella package on MSC Meraviglia , MSC Bellissima and the line's World Class ships.

Ocean-view cabins on MSC Cruises ships

Ocean-view rooms are similar to insides in that they provide basic amenities — but with a view.

Offering 129 to 269 square feet of space (depending on the specific ship and ocean-view category), these staterooms allow you to see outside through a porthole or a window that doesn't open.

MSC's outside cabins are available to passengers who book Bella and Fantastica packages.

Additionally, if you're traveling with your family or another group, several of MSC Cruises' ships — particularly those in the Meraviglia and Seaside classes — feature space for as many as 10 passengers via a series of connecting rooms. Options are available at the ocean-view and balcony levels.

Balcony cabins on MSC Cruises ships

You might be surprised to discover that most of MSC Cruises' balcony cabins provide less interior square footage than what's available in inside or ocean-view staterooms.

Balcony rooms run anywhere from 129 to 205 square feet, but their key feature is, of course, a private balcony, which does add an extra 32 to 129 square feet, depending on the vessel and specific type of balcony room booked. These cabins are bookable in conjunction with MSC's Bella, Fantastica and Aurea experiences.

Although balcony cabins offer upgraded amenities, including MSC's brand of hand lotion and toiletries, they are largely the same as inside and ocean-view accommodations.

MSC's newest ships — including those in the Meraviglia, Seaside and World Classes — house connecting balcony rooms that can sleep up to 10 in the same group traveling together.

Additionally, on its World Class ships, the line has introduced inward-facing balconies, similar to the ones Royal Caribbean pioneered in 2009 with the debut of its Oasis Class vessels . On World Europa, for example, they overlook the ship's promenade, offering views of the activity below, rather than the ocean.

MSC Cruises suites

All ships in MSC's fleet have suites that can be booked as part of the Fantastica and Aurea packages, but it's Aurea that offers the largest number of perks, as outlined above.

The several types of suites vary by ship in terms of size and amenities. Some come with balconies, while others only offer floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows.

Junior Suites

Although this room type is listed as a suite, it's essentially a balcony cabin with a bit more space — 183 square feet of interior accommodation with a balcony that ranges from 140 to 183 square feet.

Standard suites include rooms with huge balconies larger than the cabin's interior space and ones with private whirlpool tubs. They run from 269 to 355 square feet, with balconies measuring 32 to 409 square feet.

Grand Suites

Coming in between 377 and 420 square feet, with balconies spanning from 32 to 495 square feet, Grand Suites — found on Seaside and World Class ships — come in two types. They include standard one-bedroom Grand Suites, as well as two-bedroom varieties.

The latter has one bedroom with a queen-size bed and another with two twins. It sleeps up to five passengers and offers two bathrooms — one with a shower and the other with a bathtub.

While most suites are designed for double occupancy, some suite accommodations on MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Magnifica can sleep up to five people.

MSC Yacht Club suites on MSC ships

All cabins located in the MSC Yacht Club — an exclusive, gated area on select ships — are called suites, even the smallest and least expensive, which don't have windows or balconies.

Yacht Club suite types range from insides to two-deck duplexes, all of which come with butler and concierge services, luxuriously appointed furnishings (such as real marble finishes, memory foam mattresses and Egyptian cotton sheets) and access to members-only restaurants, bars (alcohol is free there), lounges, pools and sun decks.

The Yacht Club features seven different types of rooms. Ships that have the MSC Yacht Club on board include MSC Bellissima, MSC Divina, MSC Fantasia, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Preziosa, MSC Seaside, MSC Seascape, MSC Seaview, MSC Seashore, MSC Splendida, MSC Virtuosa and MSC World Europa.

Note: Not all Yacht Clubs have the same suite types available.

MSC Yacht Club Interior Suites

Although these 161- to 226-square-foot cabins don't offer a view or fresh air, they are elegantly decorated and include all the Yacht Club benefits mentioned above.

MSC Yacht Club Deluxe Suites

These Yacht Club digs are the equivalent of a balcony cabin — but in a dedicated area that includes all the exclusive perks. They run 236 to 366 square feet and have balconies ranging from 54 to 86 square feet, so they also come with a bit more space, both inside and outdoors.

MSC Yacht Club Deluxe Grand Suites

Similarly, Deluxe Grand Suites are like the Yacht Club equivalent of booking a Grand Suite with more perks. Depending on the ship, they offer anywhere from 269 to 463 square feet of space, plus 65- to 129-square-foot balconies. Some Grand Suites also have two bedrooms instead of one. Further, these rooms on Seaside Class ships include bathrooms with bathtubs, as well as separate living areas.

MSC Yacht Club Duplex Suites

Rising two decks, MSC's duplex staterooms measure 495 to 635 square feet and come with 65- to 334-square-foot balconies. They feature living rooms with two-person sofa beds downstairs and master bedrooms upstairs, which also sleep two passengers.

Each of these accommodations comes complete with two walk-in closets and two bathrooms — one with a bathtub and one with a shower. Most duplexes on Meraviglia and World Class ships also have their own private whirlpool tubs.

MSC Yacht Club Executive and Family Suites

The line's Executive and Family Suites, available only on Fantasia Class vessels, are an excellent choice for anyone who wants to stay in the Yacht Club with a family or other group of more than two people.

This option, which is one type of suite (despite its confusing name), has space for up to five cruisers via a combination of bunk beds, sofa beds and beds that pull down from the ceiling, depending on the ship. The suites clock in at around 431 to 549 square feet, depending on the vessel.

The only drawback is that these staterooms have no balconies and no in-room dining areas, but they do include all the perks you'd find in Yacht Club cabins.

MSC Yacht Club Royal Suites

Although they only occupy one level, at 388 to 667 square feet, MSC's Yacht Club Royal Suites are right up there with the Duplex Suites in terms of space. They offer the second-largest amount of square footage after the Owner's Suites. They come with huge balconies comprising 355 to 753 square feet of outdoor area.

Additionally, bathrooms in these suites offer bathtubs on Fantasia, Meraviglia, Seaside and World Class ships, and the latter three have private whirlpool tubs, as well. All four classes' Royal Suites also include separate living room areas.

MSC Yacht Club Owner's Suites

The largest and most impressive of all MSC's cabins are the Owner's Suites found in the Yacht Club. Offering an impressive 840 to 1,119 square feet — larger than some land-based apartments — plus 269- to 670-square-foot balconies, they're some of the most luxurious rooms afloat.

Specific amenities vary by ship, but as an example, Owner's Suites on MSC World Europa offer floor-to-ceiling windows and walk-in closets. These accommodations on both the line's Seaside and World Class vessels also feature bathrooms with separate showers and bathtubs, as well as private whirlpool tubs and separate living room areas.

Bottom line

Although MSC Cruises' cabin types are straightforward, the line's add-on experiences can complicate things a bit.

Overall, what's key to remember is that MSC Cruises offers a wide variety of rooms and pricing to meet just about any budget or style of cruising. Each ship will offer accommodation choices from the least expensive, bare-bones interior rooms to the priciest suites, which come with butler and concierge services.

When you sail with MSC Cruises, you can expect function, style and comfort, regardless of the cabin type you book.

Three weeks ago my wife disembarked from our first MSC cruise, 14 nights Yacht Club onboard MSC Preziosa around the Caribbean.
