JUST B is a 59.0 m Motor Yacht, built in Netherlands by Amels and delivered in 1974.

Her top speed is 13.5 kn and she boasts a maximum range of 6000.0 nm when navigating at cruising speed, with power coming from three Deutz-MWM diesel electric engines. She can accommodate up to 16 guests in 8 staterooms, with 14 crew members. She has a gross tonnage of 969.0 GT and a 10.7 m beam.

She was designed by Southampton Yacht Services .

The naval architecture was developed by Amels (71 other superyachts architected) and Dutch Navy (9 other superyachts architected), and the interior of the yacht was designed by The Wiseman Group - she is built with a Teak deck, a Steel hull, and Aluminium superstructure.

JUST B underwent a full-scale rebuild at Vosper Thornycroft that finished in 1999.

JUST B was built to her owner’s unique requirements in 1974 and refitted in 1999 with a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, with teak wood decks. Just B was designed to comfortably accommodate up to fourteen guests in seven suites with fourteen full time crew members.

Just B is on the ocean only for a few weeks per year and docked in various harbors the rest of the time. On deck is a full kitchen and a spacious living area. In early 2021, Just B purchased and commissioned the installation of the world’s smallest commercial grade biodigester: the LFC-25 biodigester. Since its installation in March 2021, the biodigester onboard Just B has digested over 2000 kilograms of food waste.

Sustainability and superyachts

Sustainable superyachts are a bit of a misnomer as yachts have historically been one of the largest sources of carbon emissions. However, a wave of sustainability has been sweeping across yachts along with growing awareness of ecological impact, green shipbuilding and operating practices, and savings from energy efficiency. In the past five years, many yachts have committed to sustainability programs and initiatives that range from green energy to food waste.

Food waste is not a new issue that maritime vessels have to face. Food pulpers have typically been the main solution for food waste on older maritime vessels. However, pulpers are not an economic or environmentally sustainable solution as they require high maintenance, have strict regulations on what time of food waste can go into the pulpers, and do not solve the problems that come with food waste such as storage, capacity, odors, and disposal.

One of the biggest challenges that maritime vessels face is how to prevent plastic from accidentally entering the waste stream and subsequently, the ocean. Food pulpers cannot discriminate between types of waste and require oversight from an Environmental Manager for usage. Biodigesters have built-in safeguards that prevent anything that isn’t food waste from entering the waste stream. Biodigesters can only digest food waste and utilize a filtered mesh screen to catch items that are indigestible. For this reason, many ships have started using biodigester as their onsite food waste solution.

Swimming ahead of food waste

The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) is the main international convention covering prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes.

MARPOL was adopted in 1973 and is enforced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO, a specialized agency of the United Nations). MARPOL Annex IV and V hold all Flag ships accountable for the disposal of their sewage and garbage. 1

MARPOL Annex IV contains a set of regulations regarding the discharge of sewage into the sea from ships, including regulations regarding the ships’ equipment and systems for the control of sewage discharge, the provision of port reception facilities for sewage, and requirements for survey and certification. 2

MARPOL Annex V prohibits the discharge of all garbage into the sea, except as provided otherwise in regulations 4, 5, and 6 of the Annex, which are related to food waste, cargo residues, cleaning agents and additives and animal carcasses. 2

With a minimum of fourteen people onboard on Just B at any given time, a long term food waste solution was required. Each person typically generates an average of 1 kg of food waste per day. The superyacht did not have the capacity to hold waste onboard long term, nor did it make sense for the crew to continually offload waste on a daily basis. 

In 2021, Just B inquired about the LFC-25 biodigester, a modern food waste solution geared towards yachts and facilities with limited space. The LFC-25 biodigester is an onsite food waste digester that is the size of a residential dishwasher. It uses a natural process called aerobic digestion that allows the microorganisms living in the machine to eat food waste and turn it into water. The machine has the capacity to digest 10–75 kg (25–165 lbs) of food waste every 24 hours. With limited impact on utility consumption and space, the biodigester made sense for the superyacht’s unique needs. To date, the biodigester on Just B has digested over 2300 kg (5000 lb) of food waste.

The biodigesters were strategically placed in areas where food waste was typically produced, such as the ship’s galleys. Mesh filters at the bottom of the machine prevented debris and any plastic from accidentally leaving the machine.

Moscow judge sentences Travis Leake to 13 years in Russian penal colony

B AKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – Bakersfield’s Michael Travis Leake is going to prison – a Russian prison. And for Glenda Garcia, it’s a mother’s worst nightmare.

Leake, a 52-year-old West High School graduate, was sentenced Thursday morning to 13 years in a Russian penal colony after being convicted on a drug distribution charge. His mother Glenda, who has dropped 30 pounds since her son’s arrest, got the call at 3:20 a.m. Bakersfield time.

She said Travis – who went by the name Michael Leake in high school – moved to Moscow more or less full time more than a decade ago to work in the music industry as a heavy-metal musician, promoter and manager. 

“He did love Russia,” she said. “He went there totally voluntarily. I kept saying, ‘Don’t you need to come home?’ He said, ‘No mom, I’m safe here, I’m not doing anything wrong. I stay out of trouble.’”

In a letter to his mother that she received Wednesday, Leake quoted John the Baptist.

“If it’s God’s will that I stay here longer, then I shall,” Garcia said, reading from her son’s letter. “If it is his will that I go home tomorrow, then I will. If it is his will that I never again have a day of freedom or happiness, then I shall not.”

At age 73, Garcia fully realizes her time with her son could be short.

“If that sentence is fully served out, I might see him but…it won’t be the same,” she said. “I’ll still be happy to see him though.”

Garcia said she expects her son’s Russian attorney to file an appeal on his behalf. Until that time, she’ll just hope, wait and pray.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

The singer, whose full name is Melanie Brown, received an honorary doctorate degree from Leeds Beckett University over the weekend, recognizing her work with domestic abuse victims.

For the ceremony, the 49-year-old paid tribute to her Spice Girls roots, channeling her signature Scary Spice style with a custom-made graduation gown that featured a leopard-print lining.

The dress that Brown sported underneath her robe was equally eye-catching, as she opted for a sparkly, long-sleeved design with a cutout in the middle.

Of course, it’s not the first time Brown has openly channeled her on-stage outfits.

She pulled a similar fashion move earlier this year while promoting her book, “Brutally Honest,” rocking multiple leopard-print pieces .

Brown touched on her achievement in a speech, saying it was as major as performing with the girl group .

“In my life I have been to many, many places and done many extraordinary things, but being here today as a graduate of Leeds Beckett University is honestly as massive an achievement as performing at Wembley Stadium with the Spice Girls,” she admitted.

She added that the experience was “life-changing,” especially since she “didn’t just want to accept an award” but rather, actually became a student.

“Not only have I been awarded this degree, but I was also accepted as a student on the Trauma Informed Care course which has been a huge step for me in so many ways.”

Posting to Instagram later on, Brown celebrated alongside her three children — Phoenix Chi, 25, Angel Iris, 17, and Madison, 12 — and fiancé, Rory McPhee, sharing a similar sentiment in the caption.

“This is my mission, this is all about one thing being a survivor – helping survivors, breaking the silence and using my voice to help others,” she wrote.

After divorcing her ex-husband, Stephan Belafonte, in 2017, Brown accused the director-producer of sexually exploiting her .

Belafonte denied the claims and  filed a $5 million defamation lawsuit  against the “Spice World” star in May 2024.
