Full Description
Accommodations.
MYSTARRY sleeps up to seven in two cabins, including an open aft quarter berth, twin settees and a pilot berth. Her interior is varnished mahogany with semi-gloss finished teak and holly cabin sole. Portlights and opening hatches with screens supply natural light and ventilation, maximized by additional opening ports with privacy curtains all around. Interior lighting includes brass Frigast reading lights and additional dome lights. A brass clock and barometer are included. Interior and exterior cushions all new 2019.
Starting aft adjacent to the companionway, the U-shaped galley is to port, with white Formica countertops and varnished mahogany cabinets. Deep under counter locker storage is outboard of the sink with a varnished mahogany utensil box above. Top opening access to the refrigeration is aft. Locker storage with shelving is over the countertop and outboard of the stove. Additional features include:

Aft and to starboard is a generous quarter berth with shelving and locker storage. Just forward is an outboard facing nav station with a full-size chart table and a swing-out nav seat. Flush mounted navigation instruments and electrical switch panel are outboard.
The full width main salon includes a U-shaped dinette to port with varnished mahogany dining table with a drop leaf for easy access, with the settee converting to a double berth. There are fore and aft lockers outboard and a removable fiddle in the center alcove. To starboard is a settee/pull-out transom berth and a pilot berth with a shelf. Aft of the pilot berth is a wet locker. A large double-opening overhead hatch with screen is above centerline along with a varnished teak overhead handrail. Forward to starboard is a full-length hanging locker with shelf over along with a bureau.
The owner’s cabin forward has a V berth with a filler to convert to a double. A mahogany door separates the owner's stateroom from the main salon and there is also a private door to the head. There is a seat between berths with multiple drawers below the berths, port & starboard sliding door locker storage outboard, a cedar lined hanging locker and a bureau.
An opening port starboard and double opening hatch with screen provide additional natural light and ventilation. Access to the forepeak chain locker is through locker doors forward.
The head offers private access from the forward owner's cabin and has a separate door to the main Salon. It is finished in varnished mahogany and features the following:

Hull And Deck
Hand laid fiberglass hull and deck. Hull is cored with Airex foam for additional strength and insulation. The core is deleted and the hull reinforced with additional laminations in all high stress areas. Hull stringers cored with Airex are bonded to the hull and integrated with the mast step and engine mounts to form a single unit that is strong and light. Hull laminate is fabricated of unidirectional glass for a better strength per weight ratio. The Deck is set in a 6" flange on the hull then fiberglased and bolted in place. Fiberglass centerboard with bronze leading edge, operated by pennant with winch in cockpit. MYSTARRY draws 5’ with centerboard up and 9’1” with centerboard down.
Topsides are finished with Aristo Blue Awlgrip (2013), gold leaf cove stripe, and single light blue boot stripe with green bottom. Cabin house and deck are white with light gray molded-in nonskid.
MYSTARRY has a spacious "T" shaped cockpit capable of accommodating a large crew but is also laid out to permit short-handed sailing. Primary genoa winches are within easy reach of the helmsman to allow the boat to be tacked single-handed if necessary. Visibility is unobscured from the helm, and the cockpit dodger offers excellent protection.

The sight of a yawl close reaching in fresh summer winds along Maine’s Eggemoggin reach or Washington state’s San Juan Channel causes sailors and non-sailors to stop and stare. The Hinckley Sou’wester 42 yawl epitomizes the beauty, form, and craftsmanship of this sailing yacht genre. Iduna is a prime example. Her dark blue hull, gold cove stripe, white painted spars, red bottom paint, tan canvas, and varnished toe rail are a refreshing sight in marinas filled with modern production boats.
Iduna has a deep fin keel to help her stand up in a breeze and point close to the wind. She has been optimized for Pacific Northwest cruising with a full cockpit enclosure, new Maxwell anchor windlass, and Webasto forced-air diesel heating. Mainsail and mizzen Doyle stack packs along with a Tides Marine luff track on the main mast make sailing easy and enjoyable. Her interior is crafted from Honduran mahogany and has ample berths for family and visitors. All mechanical and sailing systems have been updated and maintained to a very high level, ensuring successful cruises each summer.
Iduna has had three owners. Originally named Harlequin , she was delivered at the yard in Southwest Harbor, Maine and sailed to San Francisco by her original owner. Harlequin won the Antigua race for her class in 1985. She day sailed in the Bay Area from 1986 until 2010 when she was purchased by her second owner and trucked to Seaview Boatyard in Seattle, an authorized Hinckley Service Center. She underwent a significant refit exceeding $110,000 before launching. Iduna’s current owners have carried on with significant upgrades, including new salon windows, new sailing instruments and VHF radio, cockpit cushions, exterior canvas, batteries, and engine maintenance.

ACCOMMODATION:
The companionway sits atop a 16” high bridgedeck. Two vanished washboards and a sliding hatch close the companionway. These dropboards are fitted with bronze slides matching the bronze side channels. A dedicated, carpet-lined storage slots are located in the cockpit locker. A set of drop boards with screens are stored in a custom overhead storage bracket in the forward cabin. The cabin sole is five steps down a removable ladder. Handholds are located on either side of the companionway and in the ladder sides. Treads are unfinished teak for traction.
The interior accommodation is elegant and displays a high level of craftsmanship and materials one would expect from the shipwrights of Southwest Harbor, Maine. Furniture and bulkheads are of satin varnished Honduran mahogany. Select trim is semi-gloss for accent and contrast. Hull sides are staved with matching mahogany. Overheads are white formica on marine plywood secured in place with athwartship varnished wood battens. The cabin sole is gloss varnished solid teak and holy. Screws hold floorboard down during offshore passage. A lifting key inserts into a flush engagement for lifting floorboards to access the bilge. Interior hardware is stainless steel and chrome finish. Chrome Frigast reading lights and dome lights are all fitted with LED bulbs. Red lights are found at the nav station, galley, and head. Off-white curtains cover the cabin side fixed ports. Overhead hatches are fitted with bug screens. Seat and bunk cushions are covered with gold and blue stripped yacht acrylic upholstery. Headroom measures 6’ 2” throughout. Mattresses and cushions are 5” thick, high quality foam. All berths are supplied with custom fitted sheets.
A forward stateroom is access through a locking privacy door to starboard of the mast. A large “V” berth measures 6’ 3” long by 2’ forward and 6’ 8” wide aft. A removable cushion and board infills the “V” for sleeping couples. A double door in the forward bulkhead hinges open to the chain locker. Two storage bins and two drawers are beneath the berth. Lockers with sliding doors are up high and outboard, beneath the deck edge, above the berth on each side. A 28” wide, tall hanging locker is aft to starboard. Aft to port is a cabinet with two shelves, above an open shelf atop a bank of three drawers. A door to the head is aft to port. A large overhead hatch, two reading lights, a cabin fan, and 110V outlet complete this stateroom.
The head compartment is to port and forward of the salon. Access is from two locking doors: from the forward stateroom, or the salon. An electric flush Raritan head is to outboard/forward. A 12” diameter round stainless-steel sink with dual handle faucet is set into a white laminate counter. Two storage cabinets are outboard, beneath the deck edge. A wood-trimmed mirror is on the aft bulkhead. A shower curtain, handheld nozzle and hose, single lever mixer valve, teak shower grate and drain pump are fitted for showering. A towel bar, soap dish, cup/toothbrush holder, paper dispenser, 110V duplex outlet and two sconce lights complete this space. An opening coachroof port and overhead dorade vent allow for air flow.
The salon is centrally located and well configured for dining, sleeping, and lounging. An 18” wide tall hanging locker is forward to starboard. Next aft, a locker with three shelves sits outboard of a bank of two drawers and hinged-door storage bin. A pilot berth measuring 6’ 6” long by 29” aft by 18” forward is outboard of the starboard settee. A lee cloth is fitted to this excellent underway berth. The starboard settee slides inboard exposing a 6’ 6” long by 29” wide sleeping mattress. Three large drawers are located behind the settee back. A “U” shaped dinette is to port. The dining table’s port side leaf drops down transforming the dinette into a 6’ 6” long by 45” wide berth. The center portion of the dining table is fixed with a hinged leaf to starboard. Full open, the table measures 56” wide by 39” long. Moveable pin rails can be used underway and are much more useful than fixed fiddles. Top opening bottle storage is beneath the table’s center section. Storage bins are outboard of the port settee back cushions. Two storage lockers flank an open bookshelf along the hull side up high beneath the deck edge. A gimballed kerosene lantern, three reading lights, stereo speakers, a cabin fan, an overhead hatch, and overhead grab rail complete the salon.
A “U”-shaped galley is to port of the companionway ladder. A partial bulkhead separates this space from the salon while still allowing conversation between the cook and guests. Starting forward and inboard, a 10” by 20” white plastic wood-trimmed cutting board hinges up for extra working surface. A hinge-out trash bin is beneath this cutting board. A double stainless-steel sink with 14” x 16” x 6” and 16” x 7.5” x 6” basins is fitted with a single lever mixer and pull out spray nozzle as well as a freshwater hand pump and salt water foot pump. The countertop is white laminate and trimmed with solid wood. A knife block and top opening storage bin is outboard of the sink. A large storage locker is below the sink. A microwave in a dedicated shelf is beneath the deck edge. A three-burner stove and oven sit in a stainless-steel surround. A cabinet for pots and pans is beneath the oven. Two narrow drawers and a storage locker are aft of the stove beneath the countertop. Storage shelves for pantry items and cooking gear are located above the countertop behind louvered sliding doors behind the stove and aft of the refrigeration boxes. Dedicated racks for small and large plates, cups, silverware, and bowls is located in a cabinet aft of the companionway ladder, behind louvered sliding doors.

The forward-facing navigation station is to starboard of the companionway. The navigator sits in a 24” wide by 14” deep seat with back and bottom cushion. A storage bin is below the seat. The chart table measures 32” wide by 28” long. The chart table top hinges open to a 3” deep storage drawer. Three drawers are beneath the chart table. A Furuno radar/chartplotter display is mounted forward. The VHF, stereo, and battery monitor are mounted outboard of the chart table. The AC/DC switch panel is outboard, behind a clear acrylic door. The chart table is illuminated by red and white dome lights and a flex arm chart light.
A quarter berth measuring 6’ 6” long by 24” wide is nicely tucked away aft of the nav station. This berth is fitted with a lee cloth, cabin fan, overhead dome light and reading light. Storage in this space is found in sliding door lockers up high outboard of the berth, in two cabinets inboard, and in two drawers beneath the berth.
DECK & HULL:
Iduna has a dark blue painted hull with 3” tall white boot stripe and Hinckley signature gold leaf cove strip began terminated with Hinckley logos at each end. A varnished teak rub rail just below the deck edge is capped with a stainless-steel plate and protects the hull sides. A subtle rising sheer line connects the traditional transom with an overhanging bow leaving no doubt about the comfortable motion at sea. Iduna has a fixed deep seven-foot keel and rudder hung behind a full skeg.
A 3” tall by 1.5” wide varnished teak toe rail at the deck/hull joint rises to 3.5” tall at the bow and seamlessly joins into the custom HRH stainless steel stemhead casting. Open mooring chocks are set into the casting. Closed aft mooring chocks on each quarter are also custom cast and fitted with padeye for mizzen running backstay attachment. Another set of closed chocks are set into the toe rail amidships. A single stainless steel and rubber anchor roller is bolted atop to the stemhead to starboard of the forestay. A Maxwell 1500 anchor windlass with bow pushbuttons and wireless remote make light work of anchoring . A deck plate and cap to port of the windlass allow secondary anchor rode passage from the anchor locker.
Iduna has wide side decks and a low profile coachroof. The deck and cabin are off-white gelcoat. Contrasting tan nonskid is molded into the deck with a diamond pattern. Smooth waterways break the non-skid around the perimeter. The cabin top non-skid is off white. Gutters and below waterline drains with stainless steel strainer plates remove water from the deck low points on each side. 25” high double, uncoated wire lifelines run between bow pulpit and stern pushpit. Midships boarding gates are fitted with Johnson snap hooks on each side. The bow pulpit has a teak “dolphin watching” seat forward of the headstay. The stanchion bases are set on raised platforms to keep mounting bolts out of the water and minimize the leaks. Varnished teak handrails and eyebrow trim adorn the coachroof on each side. Two 24” by 24” varnished teak deck hatches with opaque lenses can hinge open fore or aft. One hatch is over the forward stateroom and the other over the salon. An array of fixed glass ports are fit to the cabin sides and an opening oval port ventilate the head.
Raised coamings extend aft from the cabin sides and wrap around the aft end of the cockpit to keep water out and provide seatbacks for the “T”-shaped cockpit. The coamings are capped with and covered on the inside with varnished teak. Raised winch platforms are outboard of the coaming on each side. Oval openings in the seatbacks access coaming “cuddies” beneath the winch platforms. A curved/raised dodger foundation is atop the coachroof aft of the mainsheet traveler and forward of the companionway hatch. The cockpit is fully enclosed with an Iverson’s Designs dodger, bimini, connector, and side panels. The connector piece, side panels, and bimini are removable for fair weather sailing. The cockpit settees measure 6’ long by 21” wide with 14” high seatbacks. A 16” high by 18” long bridgedeck runs between the seats and keeps water out of the companionway. A 20” helm seat runs along aft end of the cockpit on either side of the mizzen mast. Teak and rubber are inlaid on the cockpit sole. Drains are fitted aft and forward to rain spray and rain on any angle of heel.
Deck-accessible storage is located in the cockpit and on the aft deck. A large cockpit locker is accessed through a 14” wide by 34” long gasketed and guttered hatch in the port settee. This climb-into locker has hooks and a bar for hanging dock lines and running rigging. A single lever mixer valve for the cockpit hot/cold freshwater shower is mounted on the forward bulkhead. The Webasto furnace, engine start battery, refrigeration compressor and a varnished/carpet-lined washboard holder are mounted in this space. Gasketed and guttered hatches on either side of the mizzen mast/helm seat access the stern locker/transom space.

SAILS & RIGGING:
Iduna is configured as a yawl providing numerous easily managed sail combinations and a traditional sail plan profile. The current owner often sails with jib and jigger; nicely balancing and powering this sailing yacht in a breeze. Doyle stack packs with lazy jacks are fitted to the main and mizzen sails for ease of handling. All hardware is oversized and well-installed providing confidence for offshore sailing. The spars were completely stripped of hardware, repainted, rewired, and stepped with new standing and running rigging in 2010 during the comprehensive refit at Seaview Boatyard in Seattle.

MECHANICAL AND PLUMBING SYSTEMS:
The low-hour Westerbeke engine is mounted below the cockpit in a well-insulated engine compartment. The companionway ladder lifts away and a removable front/top cover opens for engine access. Side panels in the quarter cabin and cockpit locker provide additional access. An engine start/gage panel is recessed in the aft end of the port cockpit seat, adjacent the helm and protected behind an acrylic cover. This panel contains a tachometer, oil pressure gage, water temperature gage, and ammeter, and stop button. Outboard of the engine panel in another recessed panel below the cockpit coaming are waterproof toggle switches for: bow light, spreader lights, flood light, ignition, panel lights, compass light, and upper/lower nav lights, engine preheat, and engine start.
An Edson pedestal is located aft in the cockpit “T”. The 36” diameter wheel is covered in elk-hide. Throttle and shift levers are on each side of the pedestal. A Ritchie binnacle with stainless steel hood is atop the pedestal.

While Hinckley had built many powerboats over the years, the demand for sailboats wasso strong that the company focused on this market exclusively until the early 1990s. In 1993 Hinckley broadened its product line with the introduction of the trend-setting Hinckley 36 Picnic Boat, a Downeast-style day boat with waterjet propulsion. An innovative company, Hinckley introduced its own joystick control system years before the large engine manufacturers. Surviving company layoffs and production cut-backs caused by the Great Recession, Hinckley employment reached an all-time high in 2016. Hinckley recently launched its 1,000th jetboat—a company milestone.
