Alisher Usmanov’s Yacht Dilbar: Everything You Want To Know

Ian Fortey

Dilbar can be translated a few ways but, in general, it means “lover” or “one with a blossoming heart” and other things along those lines. It was also the name of the yacht owner’s mother. The yacht bearing the name has become one of the most famous yachts in the world thanks to its size, its price and its stunning amenities.

She was built by Lürssen, a German shipyard, and designed by English yacht designer Andrew Winch on the interior while Espen Øino International handled the exterior. The designers have gone on record saying it was one of the most challenging yachts they have ever built thanks to the size and all the custom elements including exclusive luxury materials. It took nearly four years for the yacht to be built. Over 680 miles of cable and wiring was used in the construction to ensure power is provided to all corners of the vessel. The yacht’s owner had it registered in the Cayman Islands.

Dilbar features a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure.

Who Owns the Dilbar Yacht

dilbar yacht annual cost

The yacht Dilbar was launched back in 2015 and is owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, president of the International Fencing Federation. A Russian oligarch, Usmanov became a billionaire after the fall of the Soviet Union in the metal and mining industries. Since then he’s gotten into communications, publishing and much more. He’s currently one of the 100 richest people in the world.

Usmanov previously owned a much smaller yacht called Dilbar as well but he changed the name of the smaller vessel to Al Raya when he upgraded to this particular one.

In March 2022, Dilbar was seized by German authorities. Numerous international assets owned by Russian oligarchs, most notably yachts, have been taken into custody by international authorities as a part of sanctions against Russia for their aggressions in the Ukraine War. It is unclear if the yacht will be returned once the war has ended or if something else is in store.

There is also some talk that Usmanov himself may not technically be the owner of Dilar and that ownership, on paper, may actually be linked to his sister. This is potentially related to some illegal activity and was being investigated by German authorities.

How Big is the Dilbar Yacht?

dilbar yacht annual cost

One of the reasons Dilbar is so well known is because it’s one of the largest yachts in the world . It currently ranks as the sixth longest at a staggering 511’10” long. The yacht has a gross tonnage of 15,917 and a beam of just over 77 feet. The draft is nearly 20 feet. This makes her the third largest yacht in the world by volume.

Inside Dilbar Yacht

dilbar yacht annual cost

There is a total of 3,800 square meters of living space inside the yacht for 24 guests. This can actually be increased by the use of a number of fold out balconies. There is additional room for the 80-person crew as well. The crew can also be increased to 96 if there is need as the space is available to accommodate so many.

The average apartment in New York is 866 square feet. Dilbar’s 3,800 square meters works out to about 40,900 square feet. That means this yacht is equal to roughly 47 average New York apartments in terms of living space.

In terms of luxury amenities, the Dilbar has some unusual ones. Aside from the giant swimming pool, there’s even a full garden. The grass is a variety designed to handle living in salt air and all of the plants are native to the regions of Europe that Dilbar travels between so it can avoid sanctions about bringing foreign plants from one country to another.

Comfort was the order of the day for interior as exemplified by something as simple as cushions. There are over 1,000 custom made cushions on board, each designed to match the interior of the rooms they were designed for. Accents in many parts are bronze and light ivory. It’s said that many materials were rare or luxury items but the fine details of what went into the overall interior design have been mostly kept under wraps.

While many superyachts have a helipad these days, Dilbar features two of them. Oneis located near the bow while the second is closer to aft on the top deck flybridge.

There is a beach deck on board as well as a floating observation bay for guests to enjoy. As expected you can also enjoy amenities like a gym, a sauna and a spa. There are several tenders including a limo tender available to ferry passengers to and from shore.

Helicopter Tender

dilbar yacht annual cost

Many superyachts have tenders for guests and Dilbar is no different as we’ve seen. However, one major difference is that Dilbar also has an AirBus Tender. That’s a large, $20 million custom helicopter tender with room for 7 passengers. The interior is designed with a lounge seating area. There’s a forward lounge that can hold 4 passengers. It faces a gallery and the sofa-seating area where three more passengers can be seated.

The windows of the helicopter can be electronically dimmed for privacy and there’s also mood lighting inside. In-flight entertainment system can be accessed with touch screens as well.

How Fast is the Dilbar Yacht

dilbar yacht annual cost

Dilbar can get up to a top speed of 22.5 knots and a cruising speed of about 16 knots. It’s powered by an electric-diesel hybrid power source that provides 30,000 KW of power. According to the builders, this was the largest power plant ever installed on a yacht.  She runs on 4 Wärtsilä engines each producing 8,158 HP.

What’s Special About the Dilbar Yacht Pool?

dilbar yacht annual cost

The pool on the Dilbar is the largest pool ever installed on a yacht. It measures 25 meters in length which is just over 82 feet. It holds 180 m³ of water which is 47,551 gallons. A gallon of water weighs just over 8 lbs so if that pool is filled, it increases the total weight of the yacht by 396,575 pounds or nearly 200 tons.

What Was the Price of the Yacht Dilbar?

dilbar yacht annual cost

It’s not 100% clear what Usmanov paid initially for the Dilbar but its value has been assessed at $600 million to $735 million by the US Treasury department. That makes it one of the most expensive yachts ever. With a crew of about 80, the estimated annual running cost of the yacht is as much as $50 million to $80 million.

Based on some reports the yacht has a capacity for 1,000,049 liters of fuel or about 220,000 gallons. Diesel for a yacht can cost around $3 per gallon so the cost of a full refuel would be around $660,000. Apparently refueling a beast like this requires a firetruck be on hand in case something goes wrong.

How Much Does it Cost to Charter Superyacht Dilbar?

dilbar yacht annual cost

The yacht is currently in the custody of German authorities and no one at all besides the government has access to it. That said, even before the yacht was seized it was not made available for yacht charter and was only used by its owner as far as anyone knows.

The Bottom Line

Dilbar hit the seas in 2016 and is owned by Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov, though the German government has since seized it. It is the largest motor yacht in the world by volume and the sixth longest in the world overall. The value of the yacht, according to US authorities, could be as much as $735 million. It’s unknown if the Dilbar yacht owner will be getting custody of the yacht again anytime soon.

Many of the features of the yacht are only partially known but what is known is that the yacht has the biggest swimming pool on the sea. It also has a custom made garden with plants designed to handle the salt air. There is a massive living space on board unlike any other yacht on the sea as well. Guests also have access not just to tender boats but a helicopter tender as well.

German authorities seize Russian-owned superyacht Dilbar

German authorities impounded the superyacht Dilbar on Wednesday in Hamburg, according to a tweet from the federal police. The vessel has been linked to Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, and is the world’s largest by volume. It was built by Germany’s Lürssen Yachts.

The national police said in the tweet that, “through extensive investigations despite offshore concealment,” it found Dilbar is owned by Gulbakhor Ismailova, Usmanov’s sister. The US Treasury Department said that it was named after Usmanov’s mother, according to the Washington Post . The department estimates its value to be between $600 million and $700 million, with annual maintenance costs of about $60 million.

The Netherlands has also reported that Dutch authorities have impounded 20 yachts at shipyards in that country. The country has added four new yachts to its list this week. It did not specify the names of the yards or which yachts are impacted, but said that 14 are now under construction, two are in storage and four are being refitted. They said the vessels’ lengths range from 30 to 400 feet.

“For two of these yachts, it has been established that they are linked to a person on the EU sanctions list,” the statement said, adding that none could be delivered, sold or exported.

Meanwhile the 350-foot yacht Amadea , owned by Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov, has landed in Fiji after a long Pacific crossing. Kerimov is on the sanctions list from the US, UK and EU following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Fiji’s Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete said his department would need clarification when asked about the arrival of the yacht on Tuesday, adding, “We don’t do Russians.” The US Embassy in Suva and the EU’s delegation in the Pacific said they have already been in touch with the Fijian government over the yacht’s presence.

World’s largest yacht, linked to Russian billionaire, seized by Germany

dilbar yacht annual cost

The shipbuilder behind the world’s largest yacht by tonnage describes it as “one of the most complex and challenging yachts ever built,” with “entertainment and recreation spaces never before seen on” such a vessel, and an interior of “rare and exclusive luxury materials.”

It has two helipads and the largest yacht pool ever built, and it can accommodate 36 guests and 96 staff. And this week, it was impounded by German authorities for its ties to a Russian oligarch.

Germany’s federal police said Tuesday that “through extensive investigations despite offshore concealment,” it found that the yacht is owned by Gulbakhor Ismailova, the sister of Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov.

After police confirmed with Brussels that the vessel’s owner was sanctioned, the superyacht — named Dilbar, after Usmanov’s mother, according to the U.S. Treasury Department — was impounded. It is being held in the Port of Hamburg in Germany.

Meanwhile, in Fiji, police are reportedly investigating a superyacht, suspected of being owned by Russian oligarch Suleyman Kerimov , which docked in the Pacific island nation this week.

The Dilbar, the yacht impounded in Germany, is registered in the Cayman Islands, according to the Treasury Department, and worth between $600 million and $735 million, with an estimated annual running cost of $60 million.

There are larger yachts by length. But at 15,917 tons, the Dilbar is the world’s largest yacht by internal volume, according to the ship’s maker, Lürssen, which touts its “classic profile with a light ivory hull and bronze accents.”

Usmanov is “known to be close to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin as well as Dmitry Medvedev, the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia and former President and Prime Minister of Russia,” the Treasury Department said, alleging that his ties to the Kremlin “enrich him and enable his luxurious lifestyle.”

In the early days of the invasion, President Biden warned Russian oligarchs: “We are joining with our European allies to find and seize your yachts, your luxury apartments, your private jets.”

U.S. hunt for Russian oligarchs’ huge fortunes faces barriers offshore

The United States said on March 3 that it had sanctioned Usmanov, alleging he was among the “key elites” allowing Putin to wage his war on Ukraine. Experts from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe determined in a fact-finding report published Wednesday that Russia broke international humanitarian law by deliberately targeting civilians during its invasion of Ukraine. The United States and other nations have accused Russia of committing war crimes there, and Biden on Tuesday said Putin was committing “ genocide ” in Ukraine.

Usmanov, 68, is the 86th-richest person in the world, with an estimated fortune of $19.1 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index . He has “vast holdings across multiple sectors” of Russia’s economy and internationally, the Treasury Department said, including a 49 percent stake in USM, a holding company that controls Russia’s largest iron ore producer, according to Bloomberg.

A representative for Usmanov was not immediately available, and USM did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the Fiji case, an official at the National Police Command and Control Center told Reuters that the captain of the vessel, which arrived Tuesday, was being questioned about how it came to Fiji without customs clearance.

Kerimov has been sanctioned by the United States, Britain and the European Union, but questions about the ownership of the luxury vessel remain. Police have seized the superyacht, called the Amadea, a 348-foot vessel worth $325 million, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The U.S. Embassy in Suva told the Fiji Times it is “cooperating with Fijian authorities on the matter” and is “committed to finding and seizing the assets of the oligarchs who have supported the Russian Federation’s brutal, unprovoked war of choice against Ukraine.”

Here’s what it’ll set you back to run the world’s most expensive superyacht… and it’ll cost four supercars to fill it up

  • Imogen Braddick

RUSSIAN billionaire Alisher Usmanov owns the largest superyacht in the world - and it will cost you the same as four supercars just to fill it up.

The plush 512ft vessel - which has the largest indoor pool ever installed on a superyacht - is said to cost up to £60million to run every year.

Dilbar is owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov

Dilbar, custom built for 68-year-old tycoon Usmanov, is the largest yacht in the world in terms of internal volume.

Although the details of the vessel have mostly been kept under wraps, the behemoth boasts an 82ft pool, two helipads for VIP guests, a beach deck and a floating observation bay.

It reportedly has a vast 40,900 sq ft of living space for 24 guests - and 1,000 cushions to keep them comfy.

According to Boat International , Dilbar is usually run by a crew of 80 to help maintain the vessel and wait on her guests.

But the crew can be ramped up to 96 members when needed - meaning Dilbar can carry as many as 120 people when sailing the seas at full capacity.

For guests missing dry land, the vessel also features a huge garden complete with a specially developed variety of grass that tolerates the salty sea air.

According to a video of the yacht being refuelled on The Yacht Mogul Instagram account, a 500,000-litre refuel would cost up to £1.1million with an average price of £2.20 per litre.

But social media users said the costs sounded too much and that final price could also include personnel, the dock price and transportation.

Yet taking into account the average price of fuel for yachts in the US, refuelling would still reportedly cost nearly £588,000 to fill up - the same price as four supercars.

One user pointed out: "If you spent $600M for the ship you certainly don't care how much fuel cost!"

The super-secretive yacht's price is estimated between £600million and £735million based on its mammoth size.

The owner, Usmanov, has an estimated net worth of £13billion.

The self-made billionaire made his fortune through investments in metals, media, telecommunications and sport, including a stake in Arsenal FC.

Usmanov ordered Dilbar to replace his other superyacht - a 377ft vessel which was previously called Dilbar and now known as Ona.

German ship builder Lürssen said Dilbar was "one of the most complex and challenging yachts ever built, in terms of both dimensions and technology".

According to reports, a massive 683 miles of cabling - almost the same length as the total land borders of the country of Bhutan - was laid to power all of the amenities and facilities on board.

Lürssen also claimed the 30,000kw electric-diesel hybrid power plant which Dilbar runs on is the most powerful to ever be fitted on a yacht.

The gigantic vessel has a cruising speed of 22.5 knots.

Dimitri Semenikhin, of  Yacht Harbour , previously said: "Yacht projects of this scale never fail to impress, especially when Lurssen is involved.

Ukraine invasion — explained

The roots of Russia's invasion of Ukraine go back decades and run deep. The current conflict is more than one country fighting to take over another; it is — in the words of one U.S. official — a shift in "the world order." Here are some helpful stories to make sense of it all.

Germany seizes the world's largest yacht (at least according to volume)

German authorities have seized the world's largest yacht by volume after determining that a Russian oligarch had transferred its ownership to his sister — who is also facing Western sanctions.

Dilbar, the yacht in question, measures some 511 feet and 15,917 tons, which shipbuilder Lurssen says makes it the largest motor yacht in the world by gross tonnage. It has two helipads and one of the biggest indoor pools ever installed on a yacht, according to the U.S. Treasury Department , which puts its estimated worth between $600 and $735 million.

Why so many Russian billionaires are called oligarchs

The superyacht is named after the mother of its original owner: Alisher Usmanov, one of Russia's wealthiest billionaires and a known close associate of the Russian president. Usmanov was sanctioned by the U.S., United Kingdom., European Union and Switzerland in March, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Germany's federal police tweeted Wednesday that it found, "through extensive investigations despite offshore concealment," that the yacht currently belongs to Usmanov's sister, Gulbakhor Ismailova. Authorities impounded the yacht, which remains at the port of Hamburg , after confirming with Brussels that its owner is under sanctions.

Ismailova was sanctioned by the U.K. on Wednesday and the EU last week. Both entities said Usmanov had indirectly transferred assets to his sister, including leaving her as Dilbar's only beneficial owner.

"The owner of the yacht 'Dilbar' is Navis Marine Ltd. (Cayman Islands), whose shareholder is Almenor Holdings Ltd. (Cyprus). All shares in that holding company are held by PomerolCapital SA (Switzerland) in trust for the benefit of 'The Sisters Trust,' " EU officials explained, adding that Usmanov has not been a shareholder of that trust company since 2017.

Ismailova has also been linked to luxury real estate in Italy and Latvia associated with Usmanov, the EU said, and therefore has "actively supported materially or financially Russian decision-makers responsible for the annexation of Crimea and the destabilisation of Ukraine."

Dilbar made headlines in early March , when Hamburg officials denied conflicting reports that they had seized the superyacht and said any such move would have to come from higher federal customs authorities.

According to Boat International, Dilbar is also the fourth-longest yacht in the world. It can accommodate up to 96 crew members as well as 24 guests in a large living space, which includes fold-out balconies, an onboard garden (with "a specifically developed variety of grass that tolerates salt air") and more than 1,000 custom-made sofa cushions.

How Much Does That Oligarch’s Yacht Actually Cost?

An accounting, down to the hull and the Picassos.

dilbar yacht annual cost

By Kevin Koenig

It’s still yacht season in the Mediterranean, a favorite time of year for paparazzi and close readers of David Geffen’s Instagram . On any given sun-and-Champagne-drenched day, one might see Elon Musk frolicking shirtless on Ari Emanuel’s yacht, or Drake spotted aboard a $660-thousand-per-week superyacht in Saint-Tropez.

But this year, things are a little different. Fewer eye-popping vessels are departing from the ports of Monaco and Portofino, and recent world events have led to a reckoning with just how many of those boats are linked to unsavory money.

After the invasion of Ukraine, more than a dozen yachts owned by people with ties to President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia were seized by European and U.S. authorities. Other such boats have landed in countries like Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, which have a relatively cozy relationship with Russia. (None of the alleged owners replied for comment for this article.)

The seized boats range in size from about 130 feet (about three New York City buses) to about 500 feet (13 buses). At the highest end, they can cost on the order of $600 million, which is what Dilbar, by some measures the world’s largest yacht, reportedly sold for. (Dilbar, which is linked to the oligarch Alisher Usmanov , was seized by Germany in April.)

Since the late 1990s, superyachts have been part of the flashy spending embraced by the ultrarich in Russia. The oligarch Roman Abramovich has personally bought seven (and sold three of them) since his first, trendsetting purchase in 1998, including what was at one time the world’s largest yacht.

Elisabeth Schimpfoessl, a sociologist who wrote “ Rich Russians: From Oligarchs to Bourgeoisie ,” said that the length-measuring contests that the earliest oligarchs engaged in via yacht have slowed, as they turned their attention to philanthropy and art and trying to outdo one another with cultural sophistication.

“They didn’t want to live that typical flashy superrich lifestyle,” she said, of the “old-money oligarchs,” like Mr. Abramovich. “But they are still buying the yachts.”

One reason for that? The boats — and the mobility they offered — took on a different kind of significance for oligarchs in the wake of 2014 European Union sanctions against Russians that restricted travel, according to Ms. Schimpfoessl.

Yachts were a way for their sanctioned owners to spend time in European countries despite the restrictions; a boat can slip with relative ease from Montenegro to Cannes or Nice. Traveling through ports, she said, “there is much less of a chance that any border control will check in on them.”

Another reason some people own a superyacht is that it’s one of the easiest ways to spend, for those who have the kind of money they can’t get rid of fast enough. One Silicon Valley yacht owner recently told The New Yorker that yachts are the luxury good that can “absorb the most excess capital.”

And the purchase price is just the start. A closer look at an itemized breakdown reveals just how much oligarch money is floating out there.

Below, a back-of-the envelope accounting of how much one superyacht, the kind favored by Russian oligarchs, might cost to buy and operate. The estimates are based on conversations with nearly 20 people working in yacht brokerage, design, security and insurance.

Pay to Play: $9 million

Yacht sales are typically arranged through a broker, found via a handful of companies with offices around the world, in places like Monaco, New York, Fort Lauderdale, Sydney, Dubai, London and Hong Kong. (Russians in particular seem to flock to offices in Monaco .)

Brokers are often former yacht captains who command a fee of about 3 percent of the boat’s cost. So for a boat like the Amadea, a 348-foot-long, $300 million yacht that has been linked to the oligarch Suleiman Kerimo v, the initial broker’s fee would likely have been about $9 million.

That money buys a few things. First, expertise. A broker helps guide a client toward a yacht that will suit their needs, whether they want to mostly anchor in Saint-Tropez or go on an expedition to the Arctic. The broker also connects the buyer with the major shipyards that will build the boat.

Just as important to many yacht owners: Brokers help to provide anonymity, often acting as an owner’s representative. “It all starts with NDAs,” said Mark Elliot, a yacht broker, referring to nondisclosure agreements. The broker, builders and crew all have to sign one. “Lots of these boats are built under different project names to help keep them a secret,” said Mr. Elliot, who works with IYC, a brokerage firm in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

For instance, Tango, which was seized by Spain at the request of the United States and is owned by Victor Vekselberg, who runs the Russian investment company Renova Group, was bought through shell companies , according to an investigation by the U.S. Justice Department.

The Sticker Price: $300 million

There are about 100 yachts in the world that are longer than 300 feet, and although ownership is not always clear, SuperYacht Times estimated that at least 18 are owned by Russians. The others belong to various other ultrawealthy people, mostly American and European business moguls and dynastic families, as well as Middle Eastern royalty.

Many of the highest-end boats are built in shipyards in Holland and Germany over the course of several years. The fees for the hundreds of staff and contractors, and the sometimes thousands of subcontractors involved in the construction can add up to nearly half of the sticker price, or, for a $300 million boat like the Amadea, something like $135 million.

On that kind of boat, according to the Super Yacht Group , the steel hull alone can cost about $28 million. The engine room equipment might add up to about $21 million; the deck, $24 million; and the paint coat, $18 million. And that’s for standard paint. In one instance, the late Boris Kogan — a founder of Kaalbye Shipping — painted the 163-foot Thunder using paint that had silver flakes in it .

Keeping Up With the Abramoviches: $60 Million

Then there are the interiors. A designer’s fee might run about $4 million, according to Patrick Knowles, of the Fort Lauderdale interior design firm Patrick Knowles Design.

Mr. Knowles said he knows of one yacht that had a single room — a bar lounge with onyx stone panels, curved glass panels with hand carvings and gold-leaf finishing, and custom gold bar hardware — that cost more than $1 million. The Russian taste in design tends to “skew toward the bold and expressive,” said Mr. Knowles, most of whose clients are American.

Often, there are additional ultraluxury add-ons. Many megayachts include discos ($1.5 million to $2.5 million), movie theaters ($2 million), gyms ($1 million to $1.5 million) and fully ventilated Kevlar-lined safe rooms ($2 million to $3 million). Some billionaires even build their own medical units, complete with doctors and nurses, according to Mr. Knowles.

Yacht interiors, he said, tend to add up to about 20 percent of the upfront cost of the boat.

But that’s not including art. “It’s not unusual for an owner to have a statement piece in the main salon and then perhaps also in the master stateroom,” Mr. Knowles said. “It could be a Matisse, a Picasso — really whatever the owner’s tastes might be.”

He is aware of one yacht, he said, which cost about $40 million and whose artwork onboard exceeded the value of the boat. “The art was delivered to and from the boat in museum-quality, wooden briefcases and under police escort,” he said.

There are more extreme examples, too. The most expensive painting in history, “Salvator Mundi,” by Leonardo da Vinci, bought for $450 million, was reportedly kept on the yacht of its buyer, Mohammed bin Salman . Joe Lewis, a British-born billionaire, was spotted keeping Francis Bacon’s “Triptych 1974-1977” on one of his boats. (Bloomberg estimated its value at $70 million.)

The Dinghies: $80 Thousand and Up

Inside the big boat — literally, inside the hull, like nesting dolls — are often sets of smaller boats, known as tenders, that can cost millions. One megayacht might have a rigid inflatable boat for crew use (starting at about $80,000), a vintage Riva Aquarama — think George Clooney cruising around Italy in a little wooden boat — (starting at $349,000), a custom center-console boat for fishing and diving expeditions (starting at $113,000), and a custom enclosed “limousine” boat that can deliver guests to shore with every hair on their head in place ($2 million and up).

But there is a separate category of yacht “toys” that are often found on other boats that trail the owner’s mega yacht.

Some of these trailing boats are megayachts themselves, like the estimated $60 million, 246-foot “yacht support vessel” that will follow Jeffrey Bezos’s $500 million, 417-foot schooner. Toys aboard a yacht support vessel might include a McLaren car (which have sold at auction for as much as $20 million), a helicopter ($3 million) or an increasingly de rigueur personal submarine ($2.5 million to $4 million), as well as an assortment of more pedestrian-priced toys like Jet Skis, Seabobs, A.T.V.s and underwater scooters.

And a billionaire who wants to catch tuna and marlin might have a fishing boat floating behind that can cost as much as $20 million.

And Then There’s the Upkeep: $30 million a Year

Annual operating costs are about 10 percent of a yacht’s original cost, which for an Amadea-size boat could be $30 million. It’s a lot of logistics to keep track of, and as The New York Times reported this spring, the management companies that oversee all of that for Putin-linked oligarchs are now the targets of investigations.

Docking alone for a 350-foot boat might cost as much as $29,000 a week. That would be more than $750,000 a year, for a boat that’s at sea about half the time.

Fuel can cost a million or so a year, for boats that are just floating in one body of water. Some boats go from Croatia to Sardinia; others go all the way to Antarctica. According to one broker, a very large yacht that crosses from the Mediterranean for the winter to the Caribbean for the summer could run up another $300,000 in fuel.

Crew salaries for a hypothetical 300-footer would be about $3 million annually. Captains on a yacht that size can expect to make around $300,000, and there could be two, working in two-month shifts.

The other 30 to 40 crew members, including chefs, officers, stewards, engineers, boatswains and deckhands, work year round with all expenses paid, often even including offshore bar tabs. Duties largely include sometimes tedious and always unending cleaning and maintenance jobs, as well as guest services that cater to every imaginable whim.

So That’s More Than $400 Million. But What Will It Resell For?

In April, the House of Representatives passed a bill urging the Biden administration to sell oligarchs’ seized or frozen assets in order to fund Ukraine’s war effort with additional military or humanitarian aid, something the White House has said it intended to do.

But what would the yachts sell for on the resale market? It’s unclear. Boats are a famously depreciating asset; the old line is that they are nothing more than a hole in the water into which you throw money. But not for the ultra-wealthy.

Megayachts may not depreciate like other boats, said Scott Stamper, a managing director of the Atlass Insurance Group in Fort Lauderdale. “That’s a reflection of the economy,” he said. “There’s a lot of people with money right now. If it takes three to four years to build a new one, you’re going to pay more for one that you can get right now.”

And yet, the oligarchs’ boats would require very specific buyers. Mr. Abramovich, for instance, has previously sold one boat to an Azerbaijani billionaire with ties to a Siberian energy company, and reportedly lost the 371-foot Le Grand Bleu to another oligarch in a poker game .

“Some of the interiors are outrageous,” said William Smith, a yacht broker with Merle Wood and Associates. “Maybe you get lucky and you find another billionaire with that taste. But if you don’t, you need to spend a lot of money to rip out the interior. It’s easier to build one from scratch.”

DILBAR // Lürssen // Espen Øino

Lürssen yachts built the best motor yacht of the year 2016 - dilbar.

DILBAR (also known as Project OMAR), the biggest yacht by volume received the award “Motor Yacht of the Year” and in the category “Displacement Motoryacht 3,000 GT and Above” in Florence. The longest yacht is Azzam with 180m.

“One of the most complex and challenging yachts to be built,” the judges described her “as the most spectacular yacht they had ever seen and a clear winner for this prestigious award.”

The yacht has two helipads. One is on the bow, the other one aft on the top deck and is the home of an Airbus 175 – one of the largest VIP helicopters in the world – custom designed by Pegasus Design.

The diesel-electric propulsion with six Wärtsilä generators delivers a power of 30,000 kW (40,320 HP) to power DILBAR up to a top speed of 22.5 knots. Lürssen construed her with a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure.

This vessel is the successor of the previous DILBAR that is now known as RAYA (ex ONA). The home of the sand-colored yacht is the superyacht port in Barcelona.

Interior of DILBAR

There are no public interior pictures to respect the owner’s privacy, but a few data is available. The Winch-designed interior offers a space of 3,800 square meters for the owner and his guests. There are 20 cabins to welcome 36 guests . Up to 96 crew members can find place onboard. Moreover, the yacht features a 25m swimming pool with a water capacity of 180,000 liters .
