Comino: How to Visit Malta’s Blue Lagoon

This post may contain affiliate links. I may earn a small commission if you click through them, at no extra cost to you.

Malta's Blue Lagoon

Planning a day or half-day trip to Malta’s Blue Lagoon? This article covers everything you need to know to visit the Maltese islands’ most famous natural attraction, from how to get there, to the best boat tours and things to do in Comino Island.

The Blue Lagoon is located in Comino, the smallest of the 3 inhabited islands of the Malta archipelago. With only 3 permanent residents, Comino is a natural wonder of pristine bays, amazing sea caves, and untouched landscapes.

But the most popular attraction in Comino Island is, of course, its Blue Lagoon, and for good reasons. This stunning inlet of turquoise waters surrounded by golden rocks and a small white sandy beach is nothing less than picture-perfect.

Yes, it can get crowded with tourists, especially in high season, but it’s still very much worth visiting in my opinion. And with a little bit of planning, you can even swim (almost) alone in this little slice of paradise.

So without further ado, here’s how to visit Comino’s Blue Lagoon and have a great time.

  • A Perfect 5 Days in Malta Itinerary
  • Gozo Day Trip: Best Things to Do in Gozo Island, Malta

Table of Contents

How to get to the Blue Lagoon, Malta:

Malta to comino.

Ferry: You can easily get from Malta to Comino by ferry from the Cirkewwa port in the north of the main island.

There are a couple of operators connecting Cirkewwa and the Blue Lagoon. I’ve used and recommend Ebsons Comino Ferries , which departs from Malta every hour on a daily basis all year round, and every half an hour during the summer months.

The trip from Cirkewwa to the Blue Lagoon takes around 15 minutes. On the return, you can also visit the natural caves of Comino or chose to be dropped off in Gozo instead of Malta.

Cruise tours: There are several companies offering cruise tours from Malta to Comino. These one-day Blue Lagoon boat trips usually depart from St Julians, Sliema or Bugibba and include food and drinks on board.

If you don’t want the hassle of organizing your trip to the Blue Lagoon and would rather just sit down and relax, then a group tour might be the right choice for you.

This one departs from Bugibba harbor and includes 4 hours at the Blue Lagoon, 1 hour at the Crystal Lagoon, and a visit to the sea caves.

Boat charters/private tours: Another option, if you’d like to avoid the crowds and get to the Blue Lagoon before anyone else, is to visit Comino on a private tour .

Boat charters give you more flexibility in terms of the time of departure and itinerary so you can make the most of your time, as well as the opportunity to see some secluded bays around Comino where big cruises won’t stop.

Self-drive private boat: Last but not least, if you’re feeling adventurous you can also rent a self-drive private boat for a half or full day and visit the Blue Lagoon and Comino Island on your own. You don’t need a license for this, but make sure to check the weather conditions and safety instructions beforehand.

Blue Lagoon Malta boat trips

Gozo to Blue Lagoon

If you’re short on time, it’s also possible to visit both Gozo and Comino on a day trip from Malta as I did .

Take an early ferry from Cirkewwa to Gozo and spend your morning and early afternoon exploring Malta’s sister island.

Then catch a speedboat from Gozo’s harbor to Comino Island and end your day on a perfect note with a swim in the Blue Lagoon.

Return to Malta by speedboat, including a visit to the amazing Comino Caves.

Or you can choose to visit Comino and the Blue Lagoon in the morning and explore Gozo in the afternoon.

Either way, you won’t be disappointed!

My Malta Blue Lagoon tour

After a day exploring the lovely island of Gozo, I took a Gozo to Comino Blue Lagoon and caves tour with Ebsons Comino Ferries . This was one of the highlights of my 5 days in Malta and I truly can’t recommend it enough!

We departed from Mgarr Harbor, in Gozo, onboard a speedboat bound for Malta’s Blue Lagoon. Here we had enough time to swim in the clear turquoise waters and soak in the sun and all the beauty of this natural bay.

Afterward, just when I thought this day couldn’t get any better, our skipper took us on a tour of the spectacular Comino coastline and sea caves.

We could also admire Comino’s unspoiled landscape as well as some of its landmarks, including Saint Mary’s Tower and Saint Mary’s Battery.

Malta Blue Lagoon tour

Tips for visiting Malta’s Blue Lagoon

– Visit off-season. As one of Malta’s most popular tourist attractions, the Blue Lagoon is better appreciated during the offseason, when there are fewer people around and the temperatures are more bearable. I’ve visited Malta and the Blue Lagoon in October and I’m so glad I did. I’ve got beach weather and warm seawater with half the crowds and lower prices.

– If you must visit in high season, get there early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when most of the big tour boats haven’t arrived yet (before 10 am) or are already gone (after 5 pm).

– There are a couple of food and drink stalls around the Blue Lagoon, but choices are limited and prices are touristy. If you’re planning to spend the day, make sure to pack some snacks and drinks.

– You can rent sunbeds and umbrellas at the Blue Lagoon but, again, these can be pricey. We spent only an hour at the Blue Lagoon, so decided to find a place on the rocks instead. However, if you’re visiting in high season and staying for the day, I’d recommend arriving early and getting an umbrella. Otherwise, you’ll spend the whole day in the sun as there’s virtually no shade anywhere.

– Only swim inside the buoys where boats are not allowed and avoid adventuring all the way to Cominotto (the small islet next to the Blue Lagoon) as currents can get strong especially offseason.

Comino Blue Lagoon

Other things to do in Comino

There are other things to do in Comino Island besides its main attraction. Here are a few suggestions if you’d like to venture off the beaten path:

Hiking or cycling around the island

Put your hiking shoes on or rent a bike at the Comino Hotel and set off to explore Comino’s 3,5 square kilometers.

With only 2 or 3 cars and no roads, Comino is a safe place for hikers and cyclers alike.

Although tiny, the island has several landmarks worthy of a visit, including:

  • Saint Mary’s Tower. You can climb to the top to enjoy the stunning views and visit its interior when the flag is flying.
  • Saint Mary’s Battery. Built by the Knights of St John in the 18 th century, it is also open to the public.
  • British Isolation Hospital. A reminder from the time Comino was used as a quarantine island.
  • Saint Mary’s Chapel. The island’s only chapel celebrates mass every Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
  • Police Station

Comino Battery

  • The Essential Hiking Packing List for Beginners

Enjoy some swimming and snorkeling away from the crowds in the pristine waters of Saint Mary’s Bay, Saint Nichola’s Bay, or the Crystal Lagoon (accessible only by boat).

Comino is also famous for its diving sites, including the Santa Marija Caves and other spots around the island suitable for all levels of expertise.

You can book a diving excursion or take your first scuba dive with one of the many diving centers in Malta and Gozo.

Kayaking is another great way to explore Comino’s secluded bays and gorgeous sea caves.

You can book a kayaking tour around Comino here.

Comino coast

Staying overnight

If you’d like to prolong your visit to Comino, the Comino Hotel offers 4-star accommodation in Saint Nichola’s Bay, as well as self-catered bungalows in Saint Mary’s Bay.

So there you have it. Everything you need to know to plan your day trip to Malta’s Blue Lagoon or even an extended visit to Comino Island, including the best Malta Blue Lagoon tours and what to do in Comino besides its top attraction.

It’s absolutely breathtaking. I have seen some lovely crystal waters before — like the streams of melted snow up in Montana — but this is beyond amazing!

The 11 best beaches in Malta

W ith more than 155 miles of coastline, 300 days of sunshine a year, dry hot summers and warm autumns, Malta is undoubtedly a wonderful place for sun and sea. 'Beach' here is a broad term meaning anything from the traditional bucket-and-spade sandy shore to a coastline of roughish rocks dropping directly into deep blue waters perfect for a proper snorkel. Both can be glorious – but it helps to know which you are getting! Malta has some of the clearest waters in the Mediterranean and beaches with full facilities as well as untouched coves.

Below you will find our beach and swimming recommendations with advice on how to access each location – we also have guides devoted to spending a weekend in Valletta , Malta's  top hotels , the island's  finest restaurants ,  greatest attractions , and the  best of the bar scene .

Find a beach by area

Northern malta, sliema / st julians / paceville, south / southeast coast.

A broad sandy beach well described by its name, Golden Bay is flanked by pristine cliffs to one side and a modern five-star resort hotel –  Radisson Blu Resort and Spa, Golden Sands  – to the other. There's plenty of space for beach games, except on summer weekends when it can get very crowded. Clear blue Mediterranean waters lap a shore that shelves smoothly but fairly steeply allowing for a proper swim close to the beach. It's perfect in fine weather (which it mostly is in Malta, especially mid-June to mid-September) but beware currents after bad weather. In peak season flags and a lifeguard ensure the safety of the sensible. Watersports and all the works make this a great spot for a beach-centred holiday.

Getting there:  Bus to Golden Bay – numbers 44, 223, 225

Ghajn Tuffieha

This tucked-away tract of Blue Flag red sand is a favourite of those in the know. Though just one bay along from Golden Bay (with similar concerns after bad weather), it is quite different. Away from roads and modern construction, a long flight of steps from the parking and bus stop keeps the crowds at (the other) bay. Ghajn Tuffieha is protected and managed by an environmental NGO, though they do allow a small kiosk renting sunbeds and watersports equipment. A lovely spot to relax and swim.

Getting there: Bus to Golden Bay – numbers 44, 223, 225

Mellieha Bay

800m of soft yellow sand gently sloping into transparent waters makes this one of Malta’s most popular beaches – especially for families. Also known as Ghadira Bay, it has all the facilities: cafés, bars, loos, sunbeds, umbrellas and watersports from windsurfing to banana boats – and it’s close to several resort hotels too. The main road runs along behind the beach – less scenic than the view out to sea, but it does mean you can get here easily by public transport. Sandy and shallow, the water stays warm well into the autumn.

Getting there:  Bus to Mellieha Bay – numbers X1, 41, 42, 221, 222, 101

Paradise Bay

The best of the beaches along Malta's northern 'hammerhead' and the Gozo channel, Paradise Bay is a stretch of golden sand beside clear blue waters, with a pleasant café and attractive views of Malta’s smaller islands of Comino and Gozo. It's a little close to the Gozo ferry terminal but it is nonetheless backed by vegetation. It's also convenient for the resort hotels along this coast, and attracts a local crowd on summer weekends.

Getting there: Bus to Paradise or Arax – numbers 41, 42, 222. The stop is about 10 minutes' walk from the beach

Bugibba Perched Beach

This largely rocky Blue Flag 'beach' is in the heart of Malta's main mass-market resort area. Sunbathers gather all along the rocks here in summer and there are plenty of places to get into the clear deep water. Swimming is safe and popular in good weather; though not advisable if the sea is remotely rough, which it almost never is in summer. Backed by a long parade of shops, dodgems, fast-food, pubs, and restaurants, this ‘beach’ is also the home of Malta's excellent National Aquarium. The Bugibba Water Park provides fun fountains and spouts for children to play in, and the trendy Cafe del Mar is beach club by day, nightclub come evening. There is also a small patch of man-made sandy beach next to the Dolmen Hotel.

Getting there: Bus to Bugibba (multiple services)

St George’s Bay

In the heart of Malta’s party capital, Paceville, this Blue Flag beach is the closest sandy beach to the resort area of St Julian’s. It is topped up periodically with imported sand, and is kept clean and tidy by the Intercontinental Hotel , which reserves one end for its own guests. The rest is public and as it is backed by bars, clubs and fast food outlets, it can become very busy in summer. The water, though, is as silky and transparent as anywhere else in Malta. The place for a beach day with a cocktail in your hand.

Getting there: Bus number 14 to St George's Bay Beach, Paceville

Sliema Beach

Running the length of Sliema's two-mile seafront promenade, this rocky shore is the centre of Sliema life in summer. Sunbathers set up camp wherever there’s a flattish bit of rock or close to the steps into the water that dot the coastline. Swimming here is straight into deep blue water, great for confident swimmers and snorkelers. For safety, take your lead from where the locals are swimming and don’t swim off rocks in windy weather. Plenty of cafés, bars and restaurants flank the waterfront as well as a couple of beach clubs and lidos. The promenade – once elegant, now backed by modern apartment blocks and hotels – is the place for a summer passeggiata and Maltese couples and families stroll up and down as the air cools in the evening.

Getting there: Ferry from Valletta and a short walk across the Sliema Peninsula or bus to Tower Road, Sliema (multiple services)

Peter’s Pool

Tucked away on the Delimara Peninsula, this once semi-secret hideaway has recently become popular and boats now run here from Marsaxlokk. It's a nice little suntrap, a five-minute walk from the road (signposted) through tiny agricultural fields along a path fringed with caper bushes. Once there, expect a small enclosed bay with rock pools and easy access (in calm weather) into inviting clear deep water. Rocks are flat enough for sunbathing though some can be sharp so water shoes are useful. There are no facilities so be sure to at least bring water.

Getting there: No nearby public transport: best come by boat, car or taxi

A favourite with locals, this rocky swimming spot on the south coast is a perfect stopping place for lunch and a dip if you have been visiting Mnajdra and Hagar Qim temples or the Dingli Cliffs and 'Clapham Junction'. The rocks here form little protected lidos perfect for a cooling dip in calm weather (it is not safe to swim here if there are waves). The stretch of concrete shore is less attractive but the water is still perfect. A couple of restaurants overlook the bay as does a popular route for rock climbing. You can laze on the beach and watch the tiny figures spidering their way up the shiny grey rock.

Getting there:  Bus 109 to Ghar Lapsi

The Blue Lagoon

Malta's top swimming spot, the luminous Blue Lagoon, lies between the tiny island of Comino and the even tinier cave-cut islet of Cominotto just off the north coast. Day boats run here from both Malta and Gozo. There used to be a single hotel on Comino and there will be again but it is currently closed for extensive renovation with no clear timetable. The swimming at the Blue Lagoon is as glorious as its reputation. Glide over perfectly transparent water above white sand, or snorkel over seaweed or at the entrance to caves. In summer the tiny amount of land becomes sardine-tin packed  and shade is at a premium so come prepared or visit with a boat that stays all day.

Getting there:  The departure point on Malta closest to the Blue Lagoon is Cirkewwa. Return trip about €15 (£13), children under 13 half price or less, under fives free; reserve online at busy times, but you can just turn up. Day cruises also run from Sliema, Mellieha and Gozo

Red sand Ramla bay with its beacon-like white Madonna rising from the sand, is one of Malta’s best beaches. Over on the gentler island of Gozo (half an hour by ferry from northern Malta, 45 minutes by fast ferry from Valletta), it’s a glorious stretch of untouched beach backed by protected dunes and a couple of tucked-away cafés. Maybe start with the cliff-top panorama of the bay from the platform of now-collapsed Calypso’s Cave (who could blame Ulysses for a seven-year stopover here?!) before heading down to sea level and diving into the clear blue water.

Getting there:  From Gozo’s Mgarr port, where both ferries arrive, bus 322 will drop you a few minutes' walk from the beach.  Buses are generally a bit less frequent on Gozo than on the main island.
