Shipyard on the Code 10

Why built in carbon?

Compared to fiberglass, it's lighter, stiffer, stronger and provides a smoother ride. We aimed for a trailerable boat so that our customers have the freedom to set sail wherever they want. The total displacement of CODE10 is 2010kg, from which the ballast weights 910kg. We used Carbon-Airex® foam-Araldite® Epoxy sandwich for the hull, deck, and liner with vacuum infusion technology and covered it with Durepox paintings. We kept her thick but slim.  "It is not prepreg/honeycomb because the product must be marketable and not overpriced." Other advantages of  a carbon boat * Carbon has excellent lifespan and is extremely strong and rigid. * Light boats are easier to handle because of reduced loads, and therefore are safer. * Light yachts are environmentally friendly, they reduce fuel consumption yet increase the range. What else can we tell about the CODE10? She is 10m (33ft.) long and comes with a removable bowsprit (this helps when you transport her with your car). The beam is slightly less than 3.00m (2.98m), which allows the owner to drive it with a regular trailer. Any regular car with the capability of towing 3500kg is perfect for moving the CODE10 wherever you want.

Cruising the code zero.

code 10 sailboat

Chuck Skewes of Ullman Sails San Diego

By Chuck Skewes of Ullman Sails San Diego

Many sailors, especially cruisers, shy away from cruising the code zero, despite the sail’s versatility and ability to add significant increases in boat speed. In this article we remove some of the mystique around this specialty sail and explain how it can be used to enhance anyone’s sailing experience.

What exactly is a code zero?

Officially a code zero is a spinnaker for use in tight-reaching in light air – that’s it!  The sail tends to be the smallest spinnaker in any sail inventory, whether racing or cruising.  Racers have discovered that because of its size and applicable wind strength and angle ranges, the sail has benefits for racing performance while avoiding rating penalties. However, the practical applications of the sail apply just as much (if not more) to cruising boats.

The code zero was introduced in the 1997/98 Whitbread (now Volvo) Round the World Race.  The event winners, Paul Cayard and the crew of ‘EF Language’, used a very small, tight-reaching spinnaker that could be used while the other teams could only use their genoas.  It was very successful and since its introduction racers around the world have followed suit.  The sail is considered a spinnaker instead of a genoa because of its dimensions.  Sails built with a mid-girth length (the shortest distance between the leech mid-point and the luff) greater than or equal to 75% of the foot length qualify as spinnakers. The code zero meets this requirement. The mid-girth measurement is used in the rules to prevent teams from making 180% genoas and calling them spinnakers without the sail impacting their rating.

How does the sail cross-over for cruising?

Since cruising sails don’t have to meet any racing requirements we can actually make a much better sail for cruisers.  The sail works like a very light, very large genoa.  With a cruising code zero we can make the leech much straighter vertically, which allows us to make a straighter exit for the wind.  This reduces heel and makes the sail more efficient and versatile. Essentially it provides more horsepower in light air, making sailing much more enjoyable. It is ideal for modern boats that have small non-overlapping headsails.

If someone occasionally races in beer-can races, can they use the cruising code zero to race?

A cruising code zero will rate as a genoa, so if it is larger than your largest genoa (and they always are!) you have to report it or not use it.

What wind ranges and wind angles do you use a cruising code zero in?

You can typically use a cruising code zero from 70° true wind angle (TWA) in very light air up to 110° TWA in 15+knts.  Ultimately it depends on the righting moment of your boat and how comfortable you are with how much the sail may make your boat heel in significant breeze or at tighter angles.  Most cruising code zeros are designed primarily for use in 85°-100°TWA.

How much extra performance should I expect to get out of a cruising code zero?

In light air the added speed generated from the sail is significant.  It often more than doubles your sail area and can increase performance up to 30% as compared to a non-overlapping genoa.

If a code zero is for light wind, does that mean I’ll be motoring less? Do you use it for offshore cruising? Or would I use it in a harbor as well?

We use the code zero anytime the wind angle and wind strength are correct, whether we are in the harbor or on a long cruise.  The light air performance will allow you to sail more and motor less, which, at least among our customers, we’ve found is typically the goal.

Are code zeros furling sails?  Are they easy to launch?  How many people do you need to do that?

Ullman Sails can design a code zero either as a furling sail or to launch from a sail bag.  I recommend furling because you can set it up at the dock and easily roll and unroll the sail as the wind velocity and your angle change.  Also, if you furl the sail, it can be used while single-handing. If you bag launch the sail you will want 3 or more crew on deck.

Have you had experience cruising with a code zero?  Do you have a question we didn’t answer? What impact did it have on your sailing experience? Any advice you can offer to other sailors considering adding the sail to their inventory?

Antal Marine Hardware Low Friction Rings

Ronstan fork swiveling snap shackles.

Though they’re cheaper, low friction rings may not be up to the loads involved for Code 0 turning blocks. They’re also called “low friction”, not “no friction”. The additional friction might be enough to make easing the sheet in light air a problem, for example. Rings are usually used as fairleads, where the loads and amount of friction involved are less.

Thanks, the cost saving wasn't driving this idea. I'm planning to stick with very lite wind days and not push myself this year with this sail.

So a bit of googling and it seems turning block substitutions with LFRs is one of the first things most say don't do it. Any feedback on the hardware from SBO I've linked? I'd like to do a complete order from them on one stop. I'm still questioning the line length too.

Sailavie1

Firstly, you will love the Code 0! It’s a great light-wind and single handed operation sail for downwind and even reaching but I'm sure you already know that from your research about its advantages. I installed mine on a 2008 Hunter 25 to improve its downwind power and was pleasantly surprised of its upwind performance as well. Rigging was straight forward by securing the continuous fuller at the tack to a 24" bowsprit I built and the head to the existing mast line. Sheet lines led aft are attached to a block and cleat combo on a rear stanchion (I didn’t need a winch for my small boat). To improve upwind performance and tighten the leech, I added snatch blocks to stanchions near the front of the cockpit. Your idea to for the low friction rings will achieve the same or even better results. After a few years with this rigging, I wanted to see if I could fly both the Code 0 and Jib in tandem for a little more performance. To achieve this, I needed to create a larger gap between the two sails by extending my bowsprit from 24" to 36" and installing a mast crane. This setup up works nicely and basically gave my Hunter a Cutter rig option. Here are a few pics of my setup.

Nice a cutter rigged Hunter 25! If this works out well I could be looking at a retractable bowsprit and a mast crane down the road. I didn't want to blow a ton this season so no fuller, using a turtle bag clipped on the bow that is suppose to be helpful.

@jssailem since our lake wind is squirrelly I really need to plan to be able to tack/jibe so I really want to have 2 lines. The soft shackle is an option too.

Top Eight Misconceptions About Code Zero Sails

What exactly is a code zero? Code zeros are only used on racing boats, right? Aren't they pretty expensive and difficult to get up and down? If you've pondered any of these questions, you are not alone. There are many misconceptions about these downwind reaching sails, so it's time to get familiar and comfortable with them – code zeros might just be the perfect addition to your downwind sail inventory. Read on as we clear up some of the most common myths and misunderstandings about code zeros.

code 10 sailboat

The code zero has only been around for about 25 years. It was born in the Volvo Ocean Race, back when it was still called the Whitbread-Around-the-World Race. They are often referred to as a gennaker or a code sail. Code zeros have characteristics of an upwind sail but are classified as a downwind sail. Some are built of nylon, while others use heavier, stronger composite materials. There are a lot of things we think we know about a code zero, many of which aren’t true, or, at least, not always true.

We sat down with Quantum’s VP of Product Integration and sail designer Doug Stewart to educate us on the code zero.

1. Code zero is another name for a gennaker. Not necessarily. The term gennaker can cover a code zero, screecher, or reaching spinnaker. Gennaker is just a general term for a potential downwind sail, a cross between a Genoa and an asymmetrical spinnaker. It’s a marketing term.

2. A screecher and a code zero are the same thing. Nope. A screecher is specifically a multihull term for a very large, very flat sail for going upwind or just cracked off. Catamarans and trimarans have notoriously small jibs, making them grossly underpowered in light breeze. A screecher is larger, higher clewed, and fuller than a genoa but flatter than a typical code zero.

3. A code zero is strictly a racing sail. Cruisers of all ilks have taken to the sail for its range and ease of use. True downwind spinnakers can be unruly and intimidating for a shorthanded or novice crew, but the range and furling ability of the code zero make it a fantastic sail for a weekend outing. We find that once introduced to the code zero, cruisers will use this sail more than any other on the boat. Quantum has even created a whole new line of reaching and running downwind sails geared towards cruisers to help make the decision clear and simple when considering adding a specialty sail to your inventory.

4. All code zeros are created equal. A code zero is a code zero is a code zero, right? Not so. While the code zero for racing monohulls is often restricted by rule to a mid-girth of at least 75 percent of the foot length and a leech that is no more than 95 percent of luff length, code zeros for cruising boats and multihulls can be significantly larger and have a lot more variety in their design, from very deep to very flat. There are no rules or restrictions for cruisers! Quantum’s racing code zeros and some cruising code zeros are made with specially developed composites for higher load applications (bigger boats and more close-winded capable sails), while sails for smaller boats and broader angles can be made with heavy nylon.

The most important question to ask yourself as a boat owner is “What do I want to do with this sail?” Are you a racer or a cruiser? Do you want to use it to sail in very light air to sail relatively close to the wind, or will you use it on a broader reach? The answers to those questions will help your sailmaker determine the design of the sail that’s right for you. We’ve renamed our reaching code sails based on the potential apparent wind angle and optimum wind range of each sail, making it even easier to pinpoint the best one for you. Take a look at the AWA 40, AWA 60, and AWA 80 downwind reaching sails.

5. A code zero is strictly a downwind sail. A code zero is often classified as a spinnaker in terms of racing, hence the restriction on the length of the mid-girth, but it’s not a true downwind sail. If you’re going downwind, you’ll use either a symmetrical or asymmetrical spinnaker. While it does depend on the wind speed, especially for boats without a 155-percent genoa, there’s a lot of range between the jib and the first true spinnaker. As soon as you crack off even 5 degrees from the range of the jib, you could be into code zero territory. The whole range of sizing between a Genoa and a 75-percent girth code zero is just opening up as racing rules are now beginning to address and rate this range in the middle.

In light air up to eight knots, a code zero designed with a longer leech and lower clew can be sheeted inboard and used at a higher angle. A higher clew with the sail sheeted to the back of the boat is a reaching code zero and can be used in slightly higher breeze. In an ideal world, we’d sell every boat two code zeros−one for upwind and one for reaching, but we know most boats can only carry one. Whether you’re a racer or a cruiser, it comes back to that question from the sailmaker: What do you want to do with this sail?

6. A code zero is a beast to get down. Okay, so the early code zeros did require an experienced crew to get them back onto the deck safely and cleanly. But today, the majority of code zeros are designed on a furler, making it possible for even a novice crew to go from the jib to the code zero in a matter of seconds. If you are concerned about the slight weight increase of a no-torsion cable, there are even cableless code zero options now!

7. A code zero is really expensive. Early top-down furling systems required a custom-made torsional rope. Really good systems with a quality torsional rope were sometimes as expensive as the sail. However, with more and more manufacturers offering top-down furling systems and torsional rope now available pre-made on a drum (at least for mid-sized boats), the overall cost of the sail and the system has come down significantly.

8. A code zero can do anything. I just said that the code zero is appropriate over a huge range, especially in light wind conditions, and being situated on a top-down furler makes it hugely convenient, even for novice sailors. However, a code zero cannot in fact “do anything.” We see code zeros fail most often when they’re pushed too high in high breeze; this is a particular problem on multihulls because the boats are so stable. A code zero also can’t live indefinitely tacked to the bow of your boat. While cruising code zeros have a thin strip of UV protective material, if left indefinitely in the sun they are sure to shrivel up into a brittle, moldy end.

To maximize a code zero when racing, it’s important to know your crossovers. Be diligent about going out and recording wind speed and wind angle as you switch between your jib, code zero, and spinnaker, and then stick to those numbers.

So there you have it. A code zero will take you through more wind angles than any other headsail on your boat. Add a modern top-down furler and it’s easier to get up and down than a spinnaker. Racing in light, shifty conditions, it might just be the sail that helps you eke out precious tenths, which turn into minutes or even hours on a long distance race. And code zeros are a whole lot less expensive than they used to be. So the final question: What are you waiting for?

Code Sails Defined

Code sails defined, what is a code sail.

The term ‘Code Sail’ means different things to different sailors. What started out as an innovative and straightforward concept has rapidly evolved into a whole new category of sails. While Code Sails may look and perform quite differently from one another, there is one common theme: Code Sails are fast, flat, free-flying sails, designed for close reaching angles.

To understand all the different names and versions, it may help to look back at the origin of these sails. Originally “Code Zeros” were designed to qualify as spinnakers under various rating rules that require the mid-girth to be 75% of the foot length. Volvo Ocean Racers coined the term Code Zero, which fit into the established North Sails coding convention: A1, A2, A3, etc. This design also became popular among handicap racers under Rules like IRC, ORR, and PHRF. As their effectiveness and ease of use became increasingly apparent, Code Sails expanded into cruising as well, and multihull sailors coined the term “Screechers” for their similar, specialized, high-performance reaching sails.

Code Sails add a great deal of sail area and power for close reaching angles. Boats with non-overlapping headsails see the biggest benefit from Code Sails, as they better fill the inventory gap between upwind headsails and downwind spinnakers.

Helix Structured Luff: Code Sails Redefined

While Code Sail is a term used by sailmakers across the board, in recent years North Sails has redefined what it means to have a North Code Sail, with the introduction of its Helix Structured Luff technology.

A design philosophy first introduced for offshore Grand Prix, the performance benefits of Helix have reverberated around the sailing world, making Helix Code Sails the go-to tool for improving aerodynamics and increasing range.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by North Sails (@north_sails)

With their unique luff structures, Helix Code Sails give sailors another gear, increasing power potential by projecting the sail further forward and optimizing load sharing, for a positive sail shape and enhanced control. They are custom-designed – optimized to react to dynamic sailing loads, easily and efficiently handle torque for furling, and offer load-sharing characteristics suited to a much wider wind angle and wind speed range.

As of January 2022, Helix is now a feature of all North Racing Code Sails. The exact implementation of the Helix Structure varies according to the specific version of Code Sail. When purchasing a Code Sail, your boat’s performance, target wind angles and anticipated wind speeds, your onboard sail handling systems, and the sail material you have chosen are all taken into consideration. Then, the sail is designed around your specific needs.

Helix Code Sails and Mid-Girth Measurements

Note: Some rating/handicap systems strictly limit the available mid-girth specifications of rule-eligible sails, barring sails with mid-girths greater than a headsail’s 50%/less than a spinnaker’s 75% . Other rating systems heavily penalize mid-girths greater than 50%/less than 75%. And other systems attempt to generate accurate ratings with no special consideration given to mid-girths between 50 and 75. Discuss with your North Sails representative the rating system under which you will be racing to determine whether and which any rule restrictions or prohibitions apply.

Helix Code Zero Asymmetric Spinnaker – Mid Girth (SMG) >75%

For systems that disallow mid-girths between 50 and 75%, this sail remains much the same in concept as the original Code Zero. The design requirement is the flattest possible sail with a spinnaker mid-girth of 75%. The challenge of designing and building a Code Zero Asymmetric Spinnaker is meeting the 75% girth measurement while producing a sufficiently flat sail shape with no excess area”flapping” in the wind. Code Zeros carry an unsupported mid-girth sail area that is not aerodynamically efficient for light-air close reaching. Code Zeros can be made in 3Di Downwind or Code style aramid laminates.

code 10 sailboat

Helix Code 50 – Mid Girth (SMG) <54%

North Sails’ newest code sail, the Code 50 is a free-flying sail for offshore racing. Ideally suited to ocean racing Grand Prix yachts such as IMOCAs and Ultime Trimarans, it uses a new 3Di Downwind (RAW) 700 material, uniquely suited to the hybrid requirements of offshore, free-flying sails – exceeding the limitations of standard 3Di Downwind 600, 700 & 800 material.

Helix Code 55 + 65 (SMG 51%-74%)

A Code 55 has a 55% SMG while a Code 65 features a 65% SMG. (SMG is the width of the sail measured at half the sail’s height, expressed as a percentage of foot length). Code Sails with mid-girth between 50% and 75% are highly efficient and versatile sails. However, as noted above, these sails are sometimes treated unfavorably (if not outright banned) by certain rating rules. Where allowed, these Code Sails provide pure reaching performance – ideal for offshore racing, multihull sailing, and performance cruising. A smaller SMG percentage implies a flatter sail for closer wind angles, while a higher SMG percentage implies a slightly fuller sail for wider wind angles. An SMG less than 51% is considered a genoa, while an SMG greater than 74% is considered a spinnaker.

Cruising Code 0: For All the Angles In Between

  • By Quantum Sails
  • Updated: February 10, 2016

code 0

The Code 0 for cruising monohull sailboats is a full sail, shaped like an asymmetrical spinnaker, and furls easily on a top-down furling system. While the midgirth of the racing Code 0 is restricted to at least 75% of the foot length, the cruising version of the sail has no restrictions, giving the sailmaker a lot of leeway in design.

“You can make the midgirth anywhere from 55% to 75% of the foot length, allowing you to make them very deep and very flat,” says Quantum’s VP of Product Integration and sail designer Doug Stewart.

Many cruisers are intimidated by downwind sails, especially when sailing shorthanded or with inexperienced guests. The Code 0 is perfect for cruising boats because it is easily deployed on its furler and has a UV strip to protect it during a whole weekend or several days of use so that it doesn’t have to be taken down. “We find people will use this headsail more than any other on their boat,” says Stewart.

How and when to use the Code 0

The sail can be used at relatively tight angles in light air, and at very broad angles in heavier air. “It will take you through more wind angles than any other sail on the boat. Your kite is for downwind, your genoa is for upwind; the Code 0 is for all the angles in between,” Stewart says.

Rob Greven of the Netherlands-based Spirit Yachting first added a Code 0 to his sail inventory in 2009. “I was looking for a sail within my budget, easy in handling, good performance and reliable, and covering most of the wind angles.”

Now he says, he uses the sail on his Beneteau Oceanis 46 Spirit with clients and with his crew, on everything from short day trips to long-distance singlehanded racing—even the Rolex Fastnet race.

“We don’t carry a big genoa, so we use the Code 0 in light winds upwind—depending on the wind, up to around 40 degrees AWA. In the wind range of seven to eight knots, it’s possible to make seven to eight knots of boat speed. Even with our cruiser, it offers excellent performance.”

Greven says the versatility of the sail even extends to downwind running in stronger breeze between 18 to 24 knots at an angle of 160 to 170 degrees. “I’m able to sail light on the helm and with good control.”

He also carries a Quantum Vision Code 3 for downwind sailing with a full crew, but says the Code 0 is easier to use when sailing short- or singlehanded. “Since the sail is a little smaller and flatter than the V3, it’s a perfect sail for shorthanded sailing, even in stronger winds. It is better on the helm and easier to furl away,” says Greven.

Taking care of the sail

While the cruising Code 0 is designed with a protective UV cover, that cover is still very light. It will easily survive several days of use, but if you won’t be on the boat for a week or more, take the sail down, put it in its bag, and store it down below. Also, as with any sail furled on a torsional rope, if a storm blows through, there’s nothing to stop the sail from opening up. So if inclement weather is approaching, get the sail off the deck.

Greven would be the first to recommend the Code 0 to other cruisers, but says the sail sells itself.

“Last autumn, I sailed a singlehanded regatta, several days from one place to another. I almost only used the Code 0 in light winds and got a lot of positive response from other sailors.”

So while choosing a new sail for your inventory depends largely on what kind of sailing you want to optimize for, be sure to check out the Code 0. The versatility of the sail, combined with ease of use may very well prove to be the next best sail on your list.

10 of the biggest yachts at this year's Palm Beach International Boat Show

code 10 sailboat

The Palm Beach International Boat Show returns to West Palm Beach's waterfront from March 21-24 — bringing with it some of the largest, most luxurious yachts in the world.

The Super Yacht Show Palm Beach features a range of boats that are longer than 100 feet, including 18 that are longer than 151 feet.

Here's a look at 10 of the biggest boats that visitors to the show can experience up close.

Come Together

This 197-foot behemoth with a price tag that starts at $59.95 million makes it the most expensive boat for sale at the 2024 Palm Beach International Boat Show.

Come Together provides plenty of space and amenities to do as its name suggests and bring more than a dozen people together for an adventure at sea, according to its listing on the show's website.

It was built in 2022 by Amels and features a hybrid propulsion system. The interiors were done by Winch Design of London, with materials including Jerusalem limestone, light matte oak and walnut, and bronze. The ship's six cabins can house up to 14 guests, the listing said.

A 27-meter sun deck features a Jacuzzi with a sunbathing area, gym equipment, sheltered bar and wind-protected dining table.

You can find Come Together in the water at Ramps C and D.

Hospitality

Want to buy the 164-foot Hospitality? The price starts at $29.75 million, according to the yacht's listing on the boat show's website.

The Westport-built vessel was first constructed in 2011 and refit in 2021. It has seven cabins that can accommodate 16 guests. That includes a primary suite and a VIP suite. It also features a sun deck with a hot tub and sunbathing area.

The ship has traveled "to some of the world's most remote places with an impressive 4,000+ nautical mile range," its listing said.

You can find Hospitality in the water at Ramp E at the show.

The 155-foot Ancora was just completed in August by manufacturer Mengi Yay, its listing said. It is being presented by Fraser Yachts.

Ancora was built for charter use and has a master suite with a private balcony, plus four staterooms including two doubles and two convertibles, allowing for up to 10 guests, the listing said.

Summer charter rates with Fraser run from about $282,000 per week in the western Mediterranean Sea to about $260,000 per week in the winter in the Caribbean, according to Fraser's website .

You can find Ancora in the water at Ramp 2.

Next Chapter

This Benetti-built vessel is 180 feet and 6 inches and was built in 2003 with a refit in 2022, the listing said.

Next Chapter's six cabins — including a split-level master suite with an observation lounge and private study — can accommodate up to 13 people. It features a Jacuzzi, gym and beach club, and is built for charter use, the listing said.

The price starts at $19.9 million, and the ship is being presented at the show by The International Yacht Co.

Next Chapter will be in the water at Ramp E.

For $21 million, you can be the new owner of the Feadship-built Berilda, a 155-foot yacht built in 2001 and refit in 2020-21, according to its listing.

The yacht has "the highest pedigree with a documented history of excellent owners and meticulous care," the listing said. That ownership includes Royal Swedish Yacht Club member Sten Tegner, and Richard and Leslie Fairbanks.

The current owner bought Berilda in 2021 and has sailed across the Atlantic Ocean twice and through Europe, New England, the Bahamas and the Caribbean, the listing said. The yacht features six cabins for up to 14 people and quarters for a crew of up to 10.

Berilda will be in water at Ramp C.

Liberty, built by Trinity, is 187 feet and 2 inches, according to its listing. The yacht is designed for entertaining, the listing said, with social spaces including a dance floor.

Liberty was built in 2012, with work including a paint job, main engine rebuild, new generators and 10-year survey completed since 2018. The price starts at $24.75 million and the ship is being shown by The International Yacht Co.

The yacht has six cabins for 12 guests, with additional capacity for 13 crew, the listing said.

Named simply W, this 188-foot Feadship yacht is being shown by its manufacturer, according to its listing.

The vessel, originally launched as Larisa in 2013, had a major refit in 2020 and was renamed at that time, the listing said. W's owner changed the livery and antifouling, among other alterations, over the past 10 months, the listing said.

W will be in the water at Ramp C.

Priced at $20.9 million and being shown by exhibitor FGI Yacht Group, the 164-foot Tsumat was built by Trinity in 2012 and refit last year, according to its listing.

The exterior was designed by Geoff Van Aller. The interior by Ramón Alonso features leather, suede, marble and walnut, with onyx floors.

There are six staterooms for up to 12 guests and housing for a 10-person crew, the listing said.

Tsumat will be in the water at Ramps 2 and D.

The Nita K II is about 171 feet and was built by Amels in 2004, the listing said. It's priced starting at $23.9 million and presented by Merle Wood & Associates.

A refit in 2021-22 included an overhaul of the main engines and generators, and a 20-year Lloyd's class special survey was completed earlier this year, the listing said.

The interior was designed by Alberto Pinto and Laura Sessa, and the yacht can accommodate up to 12 people in five staterooms, plus room for 14 crew members in seven cabins, the listing said.

Nita K II will be in the water at Ramp D.

If it tells you anything about the level of luxury aboard the BG Charade, this 157-foot yacht was built by Feadship in 1990 for the late Paul Allen of Microsoft, the listing said. Under Allen, the BG Charade completed three circumnavigations and served as the honeymoon venue for Bill and Melinda Gates.

A technical and cosmetic refit was completed in 2016 and included new generators, rebuilt engines, new teak on the exterior and a complete electrical system update, the listing said.

BG Charade has six cabins for up to 12 guests, plus accommodations for up to 10 crew, the listing said.

The yacht will be in the water at Ramp 7.

Bonus: Talisman C

The epically long — 231.6 feet — and super-luxurious Talisman C, built by Turquoise in 2011, will be shown by Burgess Yachts in the water at Ramps D and E.

The Code 10 Error

How to fix a code 10 error, need more help.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

The Code 10 error is one of several Device Manager error codes . It's generated when Device Manager can't start the hardware device, a situation usually caused by outdated or corrupted drivers.

A device may also receive a Code 10 error if a driver generates an error that Device Manager doesn't understand. In other words, a Code 10 error can sometimes be a very generic message indicating some kind of unspecified driver or hardware problem.

The Code 10 error could apply to any hardware device in Device Manager, though most Code 10 errors appear on USB and audio devices.

Any of Microsoft's operating systems could experience a Code 10 Device Manager error including Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and more.

The Code 10 error will almost always display in the following way:

Details on Device Manager error codes like Code 10 are available in the Device Status area in the device's properties .

Device Manager error codes are exclusive to Device Manager. If you see the Code 10 error elsewhere in Windows, chances are it's a system error code or software-specific error, which you should not troubleshoot as a Device Manager issue.

Restart your computer if you haven't done so already.

There's always the chance that the error Code 10 was caused by some temporary problem in Device Manager or with the hardware. If so, a reboot, like in many situations, might fix it.

Did you install a device or make a change in Device Manager just before the Code 10 error appeared? If so, it's possible that the change you made caused the error.

Undo the change if you can, restart your PC, and then check again for the Code 10 error.

Depending on what happened, some solutions might include:

  • Removing or reconfiguring the newly installed device
  • Rolling back the driver to a version prior to your update
  • Using System Restore to undo recent Device Manager related changes
  • Reinstall the drivers for the device. Uninstalling and then reinstalling the drivers for the device is a likely solution to a Code 10 error.

If a USB device is generating the Code 10 error, uninstall every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers hardware category in Device Manager as part of the driver reinstall. This includes any USB Mass Storage Device, USB Host Controller, and USB Root Hub.

Properly reinstalling a driver, as in the instructions linked above, isn't the same as simply updating a driver. A full driver reinstall involves completely removing the currently installed driver and then letting Windows install it over again from scratch.

Update the drivers for the device . It's also very possible that installing the latest drivers for the device could correct the Code 10 error, even if these drivers were previously functional.

If this works, it means that the stored Windows drivers you reinstalled earlier were either damaged or outdated with a problem that the more up-to-date drivers corrected.

Be sure to check for the latest drivers from your computer and device manufacturer (if applicable) since one may have a more recent driver available than the other.

Install the latest Windows updates . Microsoft often releases patches for Windows, and some computers don't have the latest service packs installed, either of which might contain a fix for the Code 10 error.

Delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values in the registry . Two particular values in the Windows Registry could be corrupted, causing the error.

While this isn't a very common solution to a Code 10 issue, it is for many other Device Manager error codes. Don't be afraid to try this if the previous ideas haven't worked.

Try an older driver version, or one for the previous version of Windows. Almost all manufacturers continue to provide previously available drivers on their websites.

This trick doesn't work to fix Code 10 errors very often, and when it does, it probably means that the latest driver provided by the manufacturer has serious problems, but it's worth a shot before trying the next few steps.

Try visiting the DriverHub website to install an older driver if you can't find it on the manufacturer's website.

Purchase a powered USB hub if the Code 10 error is showing up for a USB device.

Some USB devices require more power than the USB ports in your computer can give it. Plugging those devices into a powered USB hub circumvents that issue.

Replace the hardware. A problem with the hardware device itself might be causing the Code 10 error, in which case replacing the hardware is your next logical step.

Another possibility, while not very likely, is that the device isn't compatible with your version of Windows. You can always check the Windows HCL to be sure.

If you're positive that a hardware problem isn't causing the Code 10 error, you could try a repair install of Windows . If that doesn't work, try a clean install of Windows . We don't recommend doing either before you replace the hardware, but you might have to give them a try if you're out of other options.

Please let us know if you've fixed a Code 10 error using a method not listed above. We'd like to keep this page as accurate as possible.

If you don't want to fix this problem yourself, read our article How Do I Get My Computer Fixed? for a full list of support options, plus help with everything along the way like figuring out repair costs, getting your files off, choosing a repair service, and a whole lot more.

Unplug all of your USB devices then shut down your PC. After a few minutes, power on your PC. Plug one USB device at a time to make sure they each work. If one device triggers the error, try some additional troubleshooting on that specific device.

USB Type C connectors is a variant of the USB connector. Its shape is a small, thin oval in appearance and is not "keyed" (usable on either side). It supports newer USB formats 3.2 and 3.1 but is also backward compatible.

Diana Ross comes to Atlanta for first post-pandemic concert at Chastain May 10

Legendary pop and R&B singer Diana Ross is hitting the road this summer, coming to Atlanta on Friday, May 10, at Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park.

Pre-sale starts at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20, (code: KEY) with general public tickets going on sale starting Friday, March 22, at 10 a.m . via Live Nation . Prices have not been released.

Ross, now 79 years old, last performed in Atlanta at the Fox Theatre on March 1, 2020, just a few days before the entire world began shutting down over the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our columnist Nedra Rhone reviewed that concert and wrote: “Ross gave a stellar performance of hits that spanned R&B, disco and blues and stayed firmly in Motown territory.” During that show, Ross’ eldest daughter Rhonda Ross Kendrick performed several songs as well on top of the 13 Ross herself sang, from “I’m Coming Out” to “Endless Love.” Ross, who also included several Supremes classics in her mix, went through five outfit changes as well.

Ross was recently featured in the Netflix special about the taping of “We are the World” called “The Greatest Night of Pop.” She was the last star to leave the studio, opining that she had wished it would never end.

Police Codes

Police Radio 10-Codes

Ten-codes, also known as 10-codes or ten signals, are code words used by many police officers to aid with voice communication. The codes were originally developed in 1937 to allow for brevity, clarity, and standardization of messages transmitted over radio channels. On old radio systems, channels were limited so messages needed to be short. Also, the first syllable of speech was often not transmitted, so the syllable "ten" was prefixed to all numeric codes to ensure that the important information would be received.

Despite their usefulness, the exact meaning of ten-codes often varies between jurisdictions and locations. In addition to law enforcement, ten-codes are frequently used on Citizens' Band (CB) radio. One of the most frequently used ten-codes, 10-4 , has become popular enough to sometimes be used in every-day language.

Genoa Township Fire Chief Joe Ponzi told ABC 6 that the two people were reported missing just before 8 p.m. on Sunday after their boat capsized in the Hoover Reservoir

The two men were reportedly out fishing when their boat capsized, and they both 'may have had lifejackets on.'

Authorities rescued both men later on Sunday night, and both were taken to St. Ann's Hospital.

On Monday morning, officials confirmed to ABC 6 that one of the men has died.

Jason Milliken is the central district captain for parks and watercraft. He’s urging anyone looking to get into the water is to make a plan.

“What boat ramp you’re going to be located at, who’s going to be on board with you, yourself and somebody else, emergency contact information, where you’re going to be put in and put out adjust to plan for the family if something does happen, we have somewhere to go leave it at the house," he said.

Captain Milliken says there’s one item everyone on a boat should wear.

“Lifejackets are huge, I can’t emphasize that enough," he said. "They save lives so whether it’s 90 degrees out or about 25 like today. Have a life jacket and wear it on days like this."

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is investigating.

National 10 (Turnabout)

National 10 (Turnabout) is a 9 ′ 8 ″ / 3 m monohull sailboat designed by Harold R.Turner and built by JG Marine starting in 1953.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The NATIONAL 10 was originally known as the TURNABOUT CLASS, built in 1953 by Harold R.Turner as a small wooden single or double handed junior training dinghy. Many boats were completed by “do it yourselfers” from kits. Fleets have been located primarily in New England and Northeastern regions of the U.S. In 1972 the TURNABOUT CLASS formally changed it’s name to the “NATIONAL 10” class. It also decided to refine the class by approving a new mold, adhering to the original wooden design as much as possible. This was accomplished by J.R.Duplin Marine with some major improvements, including aluminum spars. The minimum class weight of 215 lbs was increased to 255 lbs. to keep both the older Parker River turnabout, the woodies, and the new Duplin National 10’s more competitive.

Fatal boat crash launched woman into trees and threw man into water, Florida cops say

A body pulled from trees was among two discovered after a 21-foot boat crashed near southwest Florida’s Little Hickory Bay, according to investigators.

It happened around 3 p.m. Friday, March 15, not far from North Naples, about a 160-mile drive south from Tampa, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a news release.

“The vessel, carrying two occupants, was traveling north, passing red channel marker 14, when it’s starboard side ran into the mangrove trees, ejecting both passengers,” FWC officials said.

“The unmanned vessel remained in gear until it crashed into the mangrove shoreline, coming to a stop.”

Judy Eaton, 71, of Bonita Springs “was recovered from the mangrove trees where she was pronounced deceased,” officials said.

John Moulder, 71, of Naples, was airlifted by EMS to Gulf Coast Medical Center in Ft. Myers, “where he later died from his injuries,” officials said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but alcohol may have been a factor, investigators said in the report.

Boaters who use the area regularly told WBBH the couple died at a turn known to be dangerous, but signs marking the hazard vanished during Hurricane Ian , which struck southwest Florida in September 2022.

“Sadly, I was not surprised,” boater Kevin Price told the station. “I had a conversation with another friend recently about this turn specifically, and some of the close calls I’ve seen at this spot.”
