Hodgdon Yacht Services completes refit of Asolare

Hodgdon yacht services has completed the repair of 46.9m ketch 'asolare'….

Image for article Hodgdon Yacht Services completes refit of Asolare

Hodgdon Yacht Services, the dedicated refit division of Hodgdon Yachts has completed the repair of 46.9m ketch Asolare at the Boothbay Marine facility. Launched in 2003, Asolare was designed by Bruce King, with the interior design by Winch Design and upon her launch, was the largest cold moulded yacht ever built.

The refit work included replacement of the mizzen mast, repairs to the aft cabin and deck areas, maintenance to the electrical power, sea water, hydraulic and mechanical systems and the computerised sail handling controls. All three of the Hodgdon locations in Boothbay took part in the refit of Asolare.

“As the original builders of Asolare, we are pleased that we were able to complete this important repair work,” said Timothy Hodgdon, President and CEO of Hodgdon. “The company’s connection to this yacht - combined with our technical expertise - uniquely positioned us for the execution of this project.”

“We at Hodgdon Yacht Services were excited to have a yacht of Asolare’s size and complexity to further advance our reputation for refit and repair of superyachts, having also completed a 15 month refit of a 116-foot schooner earlier in the year,” said Sandy Spaulding, President of Hodgdon Yacht Services. “I also want to thank Carl Persak and Jeremy Wurmfeld of Persak & Wurmfeld who, as the owner's representatives, worked closely with us to achieve the desired outcome.”

Asolare is, in fact, the largest sailing yacht of the Hodgdon fleet, of which there are five in total with an average LOA of 35.7m.

Hodgdon Yachts is the oldest yacht builder in America, having started in 1816 during the era of clipper ships. The shipyard officially entered the luxury sailing yacht market in 1922 with the delivery of 32.9m schooner Nathaniel Bowditch .

ASOLARE, a 47m supersail yacht for charter!

asolare yacht owner

SY ASOLARE , formerly Scheherazade, is a beautiful and powerful XXI century luxury sailing yacht designed by Bruce King as his largest yacht at the time. She announced herself in big fashion when she was launched by Hodgdon yachts back in 2003. One of the reasons she created a buzz at her launch was the fact she was the largest cold-moulded sailing yacht in the world at her launch. Built out of wood, from the perfectly preserved Douglas fir trees, all submerged in a swamp in Washington State some 600 years ago, she is almost as long as Boeing 757, and with an almost unbelievably modern interior designed by Andrew Winch, and crafted from fiddle back sycamore and walnut woods, the life below deck is as spectacular as on any super yacht of her size. The area features harlequin book-matched panels and more than 500 relief carved seashells in walnut with burled walnut furniture tops. Further inside, ASOLARE’s full beam master cabin is in fact a beautiful multi-room apartment which occupies the entire aft section of  this luxury charter yacht. The suite is divided in three areas that include an office and a library with his and hers marble-appointed bathrooms with heated towel bars on top.  At almost 30’ width, the master suite has a king-size bed as well as a sofa in a sitting area. From here, a special stairway leads directly to the head charterer’s private aft cockpit seating and a dayhead nearby.

(ex. windcrest), 98' ketch.

Designed by  Fontaine Design Group  with graceful overhangs and sweeping sheerline, 98-foot (29.9 meter) Delta House (ex. Windcrest) was designed for coastal cruising and offshore passages. Windcrest) is a sophisticated 21st century vessel.

Reminiscent of 1920’s Wall Street commuter yachts, Liberty is constructed using Hodgdon’s proprietary cold molded wood boat building techniques and combines traditional design with state-of-the-art materials and innovative systems. This 80-foot motor yacht – designed by Bruce King Yacht Design with interior designed by the owner and Allan Walton Design – is powered by a pair of 1,100-hp MAN diesel engines and comfortably cruises at over 25 knots.

The mahogany interior features an inlaid star pattern forward of the gallery, a rosette motif aft, and book-matched panels. This structured geometric patterning and combination of elegance and boldness provide an “art deco” feel. Every piece of decorative hardware and the portlights on Liberty are custom-cast. Tapering in size as the ports run forward, the portlights are the most unique of these castings. Much of the exterior hardware emulates the “art deco” designed interior.

65' SLOOP

Ideal for racing and extended open water cruising, 65-foot (18.9 meter) custom performance sailing yacht Prevail was designed by  Tripp Designs  and built to CE standards in the USA. The boat is comfortable, competitive, and easily driven, thanks to the hull shape and powerful sail plan. Below deck, there are three modern and luxurious cabins.

The boat’s interior features Alaskan Yellow Cedar inner hull skin ceilings, which provide an elegant modern look. The layout includes three cabins with ensuite heads, galley, salon, and interior navigation and steering station. All joinery is cherry honeycombed veneer and white-painted composite panels to reduce weight.

Description:

ASOLARE – This sleek, 153’ Hodgdon ketch with Navy blue hull was built in 2003 in Maine of wood and is heavy, cutting through the seas, offering a comfortable ride for guests who like to sail!

2020 Rates & Plans – Available for Winter 2019/2020 in the Eastern Caribbean from St.Vincent, Martinique, Antigua, St. Maarten and Tortola, ASOLARE will set sail for Corsica, France, Italy and Monaco in April, 2020, where she will charter through the Summer of 2020 for EUR 98,000/wk during July, August & EUR 82,000/wk during June and September + 30% APA + VAT.  Prices do not include gratuity.  Prices in the Caribbean are $82,000 weekly + 30% APA & Gratuity.

Fine Dining – Long pretty hull with teak decks, the yacht has two deck chairs aft for sunbathing, and two cockpits, one aft with spray dodger, adjoining the master stateroom, and one amidships for guests’ dining and sailing.  A large Bimini covers the mid-ship cockpit, where two u-shaped settees surround two dining tables, where first and second stewardesses serve four to eight course meals. ASOLARE is a very much a ‘food’ boat.  The crew love theatre!

On Deck – Once anchored, the crew set up additional awnings, covering the teak decks forward.

Crew of Six – Captain Clive Walker from South African is in his late 30s and tops a large, hard-working crew; six in total, including himself.  Aboard 8 months, he loves to sail and tells me that his crew excel in fine dining, offering four to eight course meals in various dining places aboard the yacht, including the upper and lower saloons, and mid-ship cockpit. In white shirts and crisp, navy blue uniforms Carl and Anastasia, the deckhand and stewardess respectively, showed us around.  Nice looking and young, from Europe, they offered us water from jugs of infused juice nearby and plates of delicious hors d’oeurves.  The chief stewardess and chef have been aboard much longer than the captain and rest of the crew…  Cheerful, easy and friendly, Kylie, the chief stewardess, loves her job, they had just finished a cruise with the owner, and before that the Mediterranean season.  They love kids and take care of them with crafts on the saloon table.  “We run a happy boat.”  As it was near Christmas, the second stewardess had decorated a Christmas tree in the lower saloon and told us that the first mate loves taking guests out in the large tender.  The crew love to sail!

Upper and Lower Saloons – Choice of upper and lower saloons allow guests a day saloon and an evening saloon, both of which offer dining.  The upper saloon has windows all about and is a nice place to come in from the wind at sea.  The lower saloon is formal with lounge to port and dining table to starboard.  Stewardesses set up crafts for children here, and as it was Christmas, there was a Christmas tree set up in the lounge, which has tons of room.

Signature Cocktails – In the Caribbean the signature cocktail of the yacht is called “Caribbean Mood,” made with rum and Frangelico, an elixir.  In the Mediterranean it’s a different drink, made with gin….they are signature cocktails of the yacht.

Sleeps 6 guests in 3 cabins + 2 Pullmans + den + convertible office + the couch in the master stateroom converts to a single….  With all this space, the yacht offers lots of flexibility for additional guests and family.  Two twin cabins located forward of the lower saloon each have additional Pullman berth and private bathrooms, lots of headroom, and lovely vanished, oak paneling with shell designs, and wool carpets in white – beautiful staterooms!

Master Suite aft with private sitting room and private office – has two large, his and her, oak bathrooms, enormous king bed, sitting room opposite with couch that folds out to an additional bed and stairs to its own, private cockpit; if guests want to wake up early and do their own thing, they can take tea and coffee there.

Private Den and Office – The master cabin also has a private sitting room and office across the hall.  The den is a private sitting room with L-shaped couch and desk, and the private office is in its own dedicated space across the hall.  These two rooms share a private bathroom, often used as a day head for all.

Welcome to ASOLARE!  She’s quite a yacht!  And she’d love to take you for a cruise through the beautiful Windward and Leeward Islands of the Caribbean from Martinique to Grenada – make it ten days – or for a cruise from the South of France to Corsica or Sardinia….

The largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, from Mark Zuckerberg to Jeff Bezos

  • Megayachts have become a status symbol for the richest of the rich.
  • In recent years, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have splurged on enormous boats.
  • These are the biggest yachts owned by tech billionaires.

Insider Today

The average Joe celebrating a personal renaissance after, say, the end of a long-term relationship or when approaching a fresh decade might commemorate it with an ankle tattoo or a sports car. But if you're a billionaire, you may instead spend hundreds of millions on a yacht .

A few years after he and his wife divorced, Jeff Bezos shelled out on a megayacht. Last year, Bezos debuted the 127-meter vessel "Koru," a Māori symbol that signifies a fresh start — perhaps referring to that with his fiancée Lauren Sanchez.

Earlier this year, just before his 40th birthday, Mark Zuckerberg became the rumored owner of a yacht originally built for a Russian oligarch.

Superyachts have increasingly become ultrawealthy status symbols , providing highly secluded leisure and networking sites. They are — even more so than real estate — the single most expensive asset you can own.

"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Giovanna Vitelli, the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts, told Business Insider.

While many tech billionaires have bought yachts, the richest of the rich, like Bezos, Zuckerberg, and Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, have gone bigger. Their boats are virtual palaces at sea, decked with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.

A look at these megayachts — broadly defined as over 70 meters long, mostly custom-built, and often costing nine figures — offers a glimpse into how the .00001% lives. It's something few others will ever get to experience. Even chartering a yacht of this size for a week typically costs upwards of $1 million.

One major thing that hundreds of millions of dollars can buy is privacy. There are likely yachts that have not been publicly recorded or registered — for example, Evan Spiegel is rumored to own the 94-meter megayacht Bliss. In an industry ruled by discretion , deciphering who owns what is typically an exercise in stringing together many clues.

Here are the largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, listed in order of length.

Jeff Bezos: Koru and Abeona

asolare yacht owner

Amazon founder Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the 127-meter Koru, made a splash last year as she crisscrossed the Mediterranean in her first summer at sea, with her 75-meter support vessel Abeona in tow.

The sailing yacht, which is hard to miss thanks to her massive size and unique design, was host to Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez's famous friends . The couple held an engagement party on board, which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, they were seen on the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.

Even before her completion, Koru made headlines. She drew the ire of some Dutch people, who vowed to hurl eggs after she was announced a historic bridge in Rotterdam might be taken apart to allow the Oceanco boat through. Luckily, the shipyard made alternative plans, and an egg crisis was averted.

Among yacht world insiders , Koru is widely praised for her craftsmanship.

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," one superyacht expert told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Mark Zuckerberg: Launchpad

asolare yacht owner

Earlier this year, the yacht world was rife with rumors that Zuckerberg purchased Launchpad, a 118-meter superyacht originally designed for a sanctioned Russian businessman.

The ship made her maiden voyage in March, going from Gibraltar to St. Maarten and mooring in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Little is known about her interior, but photos show a large swimming pool and helipad. Her price, too, has been kept under wraps but is said to be nine figures.

Eric Schmidt: Whisper

asolare yacht owner

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt made waves last year when he agreed to buy the Alfa Nero , the yacht of a sanctioned Russian oligarch, for $67 million in an auction conducted by Antigua and Barbuda. But he backed out of the deal following legal issues over her true owner. He quietly purchased Kismet instead. The 95-meter-long Lürssen-built boat was formerly owned by the Jacksonville Jaguar's billionaire owner Shahid Khan . Schmidt renamed her Whisper.

The ship can fit 12 guests and a crew of 28, according to Moran Yacht & Ship, which oversaw her construction. She features a master deck with a private jacuzzi, full-service spa, lap pool, movie theater, and outdoor fireplace.

While her final sale price was not public, she was listed for 149 million euros (about $161 million at current exchange rates), and at a charity auction in January, one week aboard the ship went for $2.4 million, according to industry outlet Yacht Charter Fleet.

Barry Diller: Eos

asolare yacht owner

Barry Diller , the chairman of digital media company IAC, co-owns the megayacht Eos with his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg , who is immortalized by a figurehead sculpture by Anh Duong.

One of the largest private sailing yachts in the world, the three-masted Lürssen schooner measures 93 meters long. She took three years to be built before being delivered to Diller in 2009, and since then, little has come to light about her interior and features.

The power couple has hosted many celebrities on the Eos, which spends her summers crisscrossing the Mediterranean and New Year ' s Eve in St. Barts . Over the years, guests have included Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thompson, Anderson Cooper, and Bezos, leading some to believe she provided inspiration for his Koru.

Jim Clark: Athena

asolare yacht owner

Netscape founder Jim Clark purchased the 90-meter sailing yacht Athena in 2004.

"I could easily have built a 50- or 60-meter motor yacht that would have had the same space as Athena, but I was never really interested in building a motor yacht," he told Boat International in 2016. "To my eye, she's one of the most gorgeous large sailing yachts, maybe the most gorgeous large sailing yacht in the world."

Athena has room for 10 guests and 21 crewmembers, and the only change Clark says he'd make in her design is adding more space for his kids.

"If I was forced to change something, I would convert the office on the lower deck into a children's room," he said.

The former Stanford professor tried to sell her at various points — listing her for $95 million in 2012 , $69 million in 2016, and $59 million in 2017 — but she has yet to change hands.

Larry Ellison: Musashi

asolare yacht owner

Oracle founder Larry Ellison has owned several superyachts over the years, including the Katana, the Ronin, and the Rising Sun — which he sold to fellow billionaire David Geffen .

He purchased his current boat, Musashi, in 2011 for a reported $160 million from custom-yacht giant Feadship.

Named after a famous samurai warrior, the 88-meter-long yacht has both Japanese and Art Deco-inspired design elements. She also boasts amenities including an elevator, swimming pool, beauty salon, gym, and basketball court.

Ellison is known for his extravagant spending — private islands, jets, a tennis tournament — and yachting is among his favorite and most expensive hobbies. He took up racing them in the 1990s and financed the America's Cup-winning BMW Oracle Racing team .

Laurene Powell Jobs: Venus

asolare yacht owner

Steve Jobs' wife, investor and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, inherited a nearly finished 78-meter yacht named Venus when the Apple cofounder died in 2011.

After spending years vacationing on Ellison's yachts, Jobs wanted one for himself. He designed Venus with French starchitect and decorator Philippe Starck , and she was worth $130 million at completion.

"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."

Jobs and Starck began working together in 2007, the designer told Vanity Fair , and held monthly meetings over four years. Venus was delivered in 2012 to Jobs' specification: six identical cabins, a design to ensure spaces of absolute silence, and the most up-to-date technology.

"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. "It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes."

Charles Simonyi: Norn

asolare yacht owner

Early Microsoft employee Charles Simonyi has purchased two megayachts from the German shipyard Lürssen: the 90-meter Norn and 71-meter Skat.

Delivered in 2023, Norn is full of luxe features, including an outdoor cinema and a pool floor that lifts to become a light-up dancefloor. She shares a militaristic style with Skat , which Simonyi sold in 2021.

Skats's name is derived from the Danish word for treasure, and she had a listing price of 56.5 million euros and was launched in 2002.

"The yacht is to be home away from my home in Seattle, and its style should match the style of the house, adapted for the practicalities of the sea," Simonyi once said .

Sergey Brin: Dragonfly

asolare yacht owner

Google cofounder Sergey Brin has built a flotilla of yachts, boats, and toys known as the "Fly Fleet."

Named after a once-secret Google product , the largest of Brin's armada is the sleek Dragonfly , which boasts a movie theater and a helipad. The 73-meter-long vessel was built by the Australian shipyard Silver Yachts and can fit up to 18 guests and 16 crew members, according to SuperYacht Times.

Also in his fleet is the superyacht Butterfly, a mere 38 meters long. Often moored in the Bay Area, her crewmembers spend their downtime kitesurfing and giving swimming lessons to local kids.

The rest of his marine lineup includes a smaller boat called Firefly, as well as Jet Skis, foilboards, dinghies, and kiteboards. She takes a team of 50 full-time employees to manage, steer, and maintain the entire operation.

Sindhu Sundar contributed to an earlier version of this story.

Correction: May 6, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated Giovanna Vitelli's title. She is the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, not a vice president.

Man gets realistic picture of his boat painted on a fence intended to hide it

A California man who was ordered to keep his boat out of sight has had the last laugh by commissioning an artist to paint a realistic image of it on the fence that obscures it.

Local government officials told Etienne Constable, of Seaside, California, in July that he had to build a 6-foot fence to hide the boat from view of his neighbors.

In a light-hearted jibe at officialdom, Constable decided to follow the directive, which said nothing about how the fence should be decorated, and asked local artist Hanif Panni to create a mural that makes it look as if the fence isn't there.

"I’m not a rule-breaker, but I like to make a political statement as necessary, as well as a humorous statement and a creative statement," he told NBC affiliate KSBW of Monterey Bay .

Man paints boat on fence erected to conceal boat

He is yet to have had any contact from the city about the mural — but he said he considers it to be covered by the right to freedom of expression as enshrined in the First Amendment.

"The reaction is extremely more than we ever expected, and we’re both just tickled about it," Constable said, referring to the stir the image has made on social media, where it has been shared many times.

Panni, who paints images across the Central Coast area, told KSBW: "I’m a big proponent of public art in spaces. It engages people in ways that reaching out and having conversations doesn’t sometimes."

And Panni added that since the Seaside boat mural has gone viral, other boat owners have approached him to see whether he can do the same for them.

Yacht sinks after latest incident involving orcas in strait of Gibraltar

Vessel measuring 15 metres in length sank after encounter with the animals, Spain’s maritime rescue service reports

An unknown number of orcas have sunk a yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service has said, in the latest in a series of similar incidents involving the animals.

The vessel, Alboran Cognac, which measured 15 metres (49ft) in length and carried two people, encountered the highly social apex predators, also known as killer whales, at 9am local time on Sunday.

The passengers reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before the boat started taking on water. After alerting the rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and transported them to Gibraltar. The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank.

The incident is the latest example of recurring orca rammings around the Gibraltar strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and north-western Spain. Experts believe them to involve a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the designation “Gladis”.

According to the research group GT Atlantic Orca, which tracks populations of the Iberian orca sub-species, there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the region were first reported in May 2020.

Researchers are unsure about the causes for the behaviour, but theories include that it is a playful manifestation of the mammals’ curiosity, a social fad or the intentional targeting of what they perceive as competitors for their favourite prey, the local bluefin tuna.

Although known as killer whales, endangered orcas are part of the dolphin family. They can measure up to 8 metres in length and weigh up to 6 tonnes as adults.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

The cat is also equipped with a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system that ensures a maximum speed of 30 knots at full tilt. If that’s not enough grunt, an optional generator can provide an additional 180 kW of electrical power. In addition, a paravane kite can be added to the vessel to lower overall fuel consumption and maybe even increase speed.

“This model represents ultimate versatility in a sub-79-foot, owner-operator platform, and the embodiment of our commitment to delivering exceptional experiences on the water,” Weatherley said in a statement. “I am very excited to see this project come to life and welcome the customer on board for some unforgettable journeys at sea.”

Inside, the open-plan main salon is outfitted with a bar, a day galley, and expansive windows that offer panoramic views. The two hulls are home guest accommodation for 12, the main galley, and the crew quarters, while the wheelhouse serves as an adaptable entertainment space with another bar and alfresco seating. You can also choose to add a hot tub to the wheelhouse’s shaded balcony.

The 80 has substantial exterior decks given its length. The aft cockpit centers around a large “working area” that can store tenders, toys, or expedition gear. The built-in crane could move a 20-foot ISO container or a personal sub, for example. Alternatively, the aft area can be used for outdoor entertaining or other activities such as fishing.

A star fleet member, indeed.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

asolare yacht owner

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

asolare yacht owner

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

asolare yacht owner

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

asolare yacht owner

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

asolare yacht owner

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

asolare yacht owner

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
