You must have a valid Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). You must be a U.S. citizen or a legal immigrant. In addition to the income requirements, you may also need to meet other eligibility requirements, such as: - You must not have been evicted from any public housing or Section 8 housing in the past three years. - You must not have any outstanding felony convictions for drug-related offenses. - You must not be a registered sex offender.

1310 Gallery - Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts

 The 1310 Gallery at the  Artspace Sailboat Bend Lofts is a art community in down town Fort Lauderdale that was created by Art Space (artspace.org).  Artspace’s mission is to create, foster, and preserve affordable space for artists and arts organizations.  This 37 unit loft space houses both visual and performing artists.  Sailboat Bend Artists Community has been open since April 2008.

The community’s various disciplined professional, mid-career and emerging talent includes: painters, photographers, writers, poets, sculptors, dancers, musicians, actors, and graphic designers.

The artists comes together with various local artists, non profits, and art groups to create art exhibits, film screenings, workshops, and more in their three floor gallery space as well as the Fort Lauderdale Historic Commissions building next door.  These events are always free to the public.  A new exhibit every third Saturday of the month , as well as many months holding multiple events.  Please join the mailing list to be updated on these events.  There is also a 1310 Gallery Facebook Group page.

Subscriber only, let there be light: local artists find refuge at artspace’s sailboat bend artist’s lofts.

Artspace’s Sailboat Bend artist’s lofts, which opened in April 2008, consist of 37 units that provide affordable housing and studio space for local artists. Residents span all types of artists, including: painters, photographers, writers, poets, sculptors, dancers, musicians, actors and graphic designers.

The building includes a three-floor gallery space, known as the 1310 Gallery. Every third Saturday of the month, a new exhibit opens in the gallery space. This month’s exhibit was produced by Niki Lopez and some of her fellow artist friends and residents.

A voluntary group who assists and oversees residents needs with group shows is the events committee, which includes: Niki Lopez, Lisa Rockford, Louis Davis, Claudia Polzer, Nzingah Oniwosan, Laura Quiroga and Laura Peterson.

Each year, a selection process allows residents to take ownership of the gallery space, allowing the individual to produce a month-long event. This is an opportunity for the resident to work on collaboration, promotion or possible sponsorships. Depending on the producer, some months will feature multiple openings, participation in community outreach, film screenings, workshops, open studios and/or live performances. All events are free and open to the community.

The current exhibit, hosted by Niki Art Studio and Colabo Fingers, is entitled “Into the Rabbit Hole: Art + Performance + Workshops.” According to the event’s website, the visual art exhibit is “a portal into the bizarre and exotic; a place where the hungry traveler can explore their inner voyeurism through the vastness of visual representation.”

According to the website of Artspace, the Minneapolis-based nonprofit (www.artspace.org), “Artspace’s mission is to create, foster, and preserve affordable space for artists and arts organizations. It pursues this mission through development projects, asset management activities, consulting services, and community-building activities that serve artists and arts organizations of all disciplines, cultures, and economic circumstances. By creating this space, Artspace supports the continued professional growth of artists, and enhances the cultural and economic vitality of the surrounding communities.”

Finding affordable living and working space has long been a problem for artists, often pushing them to warehouse areas, which often are unable to provide proper lighting needed for making art. In the 1970s, Minneapolis’ historic warehouse district experienced gentrification, which forced artists out of the district. Thus, Artspace was formed in 1979 and operated as an advocacy group for ten years, eventually growing into a development group. Artspace is now one of America’s leading nonprofit developers for arts housing.

Most recently, Artspace has continued to expand its mission, incorporating the planning and development of performing arts centers, additional arts facilities and arts districts throughout the country.

The Artspace Sailboat Bend lofts, in partnership with Broward County Cultural Division, are located at 1310 S.W. 2nd Court, Fort Lauderdale. The live/work units are available to families earning 50 percent and 60 percent of area median income. The building includes 16 one-bedroom, 18 two-bedroom and three, three-bedroom units.

Lopez produces “The Circle”, a bi-weekly Facebook/Youtube live-video podcast sharing stories of our creative community, activists & social entrepreneurs. Niki’s advocacy includes mental health, self-care, and diversity in swimming. Lopez is one of the founding members of the Sailboat Artist Lofts.
