adix sailboat

Built by Astilleros de Mallorca in 1984 to an Arthur Holgate design, with a length of almost 65m, Adix remains one of the largest sailing yachts built since the 1930s. The yacht was originally brought to the yard in 1991 to undergo a complete programme of refit and repair, including a transom modification, 6m extension and full interior strip out. She has since paid subsequent visits to our yard in 2001, 2008, 2014, and 2022. During her 2009 visit Adix underwent scratch and gloss paint work, Lloyd’s and MCA surveys with a major engineering overhaul on her generators and main engines and cosmetic work on her external deckhouses. At the time the 370 tonne three masted schooner was the largest yacht to be lifted out by Pendennis’ 400 tonne travel hoist. Adix returned to Falmouth in April 2014 to compete in the fourth edition of the Pendennis Cup following which she was hauled out to begin a comprehensive 8-month refit programme. The Schooner underwent engineering works which included the installation of new generators and main engine, the yacht’s weight was assessed and the ballast was reconfigured to improve her weight by over 18 tonnes. Paintworks were completed in situ whilst she was based in one of our 90m construction halls. The Pendennis team redesigned the yacht’s deck house, which was moved further forward and combined with a seating area to provide better interaction with the Owner’s accommodation. After enjoying the summer cruising period Adix returned for final topside works including new lighter carbon and titanium rigging to complete her refit. After departing Falmouth, Adix continued to receive remote assistance from our Yacht Support team in locations around the globe, before returning for a short visit to the yard in 2022. She has recently departed to continue her adventures.

Historical:

One of the largest sailing yachts built since the 1930’s, and styled after the William Gardner designed 1903 yacht Atlantic. Jessica was designed by Arthur Holgate of South Africa, who sadly was killed by a snowplow in Maine while Jessica was being built by Astilleros de Mallorca, Palma, Illes Balears in Spain. Due to size, complexity and transport purposes her rig was installed in England. Jessica was named after the original owners girlfriend, who had been a secretary in the Nicholson office in Antigua.

Adix had her first transformation back in 1991 when she underwent a transom modification and full interior strip out, with design by Dykstra Naval Architects. This remodeling program saw her named as ‘Best Refit’ in the ShowBoats Awards that year.

adix sailboat

In 2015 Adix underwent a new performance upgrade. The Adix’s old rigs weighed in at a whopping 15 tons. Her new carbon masts and ECsix rigging, weighing now just 9.5 tons, that’s saving 36% of the rig weight. She also got a new carbon bowsprit, replacing the old steel one. Her new rig was fashioned to look as the old; one notable exception being the introduction of ‘deadeyes and lanyards’ as a nod towards her traditional heritage. The summer of 2016 she will be on the east coast of the United States and the Maine coast, before returning back through the Caribbean en-route once more to the Pacific, continuing her tradition as one of the great cruising yachts of her time.

Provenance (The Wall of Remembrance – The Owners, Crew & Notable Guest):

Owner: (1984-1988) – Carlos Perdomo, Argentina – Jessica Owner: (1988-1989) – Alan Bond, Australia – Renamed XXXX Owner: Jaime Botin, heir Santander SA bank. Spain’s laws on the protection of cultural heritage are said to be among the strictest in Europe. Any work of art older than 100 years is considered a national treasure and thus requires an export permit. Botin applied for an export permit for the Picasso, but was rejected. Botin received a €52.4 million ($58 million) fine for smuggling a celebrated work by Pablo Picasso out of Spain. Captain: Paul Goss

March/April Issue 260: Schooner Adix

' data-srcset=

Residents of Greenport, N.Y., a small maritime village on the northeast end of Long Island, have been watching all sorts of sailing ships come and go over the past couple hundred years. There must be some sort of genetic memory of the commonplace in the locals because the presence of sailing craft, barques, yawls and sloops tying up at the village marina hardly elicits a buzz. On occasion though, when some vessel of rare beauty sails down the bay, the quotidian memory is erased and all eyes turn seaward. Adix is one of these rare sailing vessels: a three-masted schooner of such grace and elegance that even the most jaded are charmed.

Designed by South African Arthur Holgate and built of steel in Spain at the Astilleros de Mallorca shipyard in 1984, Adix was inspired by William Gardner’s three-masted schooner Atlantic , which in 1905 established the trans-Atlantic sailing record from Sandy Hook, N.J., to the Lizard Light. Atlantic ’s time was 12 days, four hours, one minute and 19 seconds, with a fastest 24-hour run of 341 nautical miles at a speed of 14 knots. That record held until 1998.

Since its launching, Adix has had five refits costing millions of dollars. The vessel has been stretched, fitted with carbon-fiber spars, coddled, mollycoddled and fashioned with a new interior, decks and more.

Adix is gaff-rigged, measuring 183 feet on deck with a beam of 28 feet and a draft of 15 feet, and weighs in at 370 tonnes. The sail area is 13,800 square feet, increasing to 28,000 square feet for sailing downwind. It sails with 14 crew, and in a trans-Atlantic race with the schooner Windrose , it beat Atlantic ’s record, taking 11 days and 10 hours to cover the distance.

Christened Jessica , Adix was bought in the mid-1980s by Alan Bond who named the yacht after his Australian beer company. Bond, an Australian businessman who later in his career served four years in jail for corporate fraud, might be better remembered for bankrolling Australia II in 1983 and winning the Americas Cup — the first time the New York Yacht Club had lost the trophy in more than 130 years. In 1989, he sold the vessel.

The latest owner of Adix , Jaime Botin, an heir to the Santander Banking Company of Spain, was arrested in 2015 for attempting to smuggle a Picasso painting out of the country aboard the schooner. The painting, “Head of a Young Woman” (1906), was seized by French authorities in Corsica in 2015. It was acquired by Botin in 1977 and is valued at $28 million. Cataloged as a national treasure, it cannot leave Spain under any circumstances. Botin’s trial began in November 2019.

We will have our captain do a morning sun line. We’ll use the 2020 Nautical Almanac and a height of eye of 15 feet, for a morning sun line on Feb. 3. We need to find the local mean time (LMT) of the observation and the Ho. Then, using HO 249, find the intercept and plot to find the estimated position. The GMT time of the lower limb observation of the sun is 02:25:15. The DR of Adix at the time is 22° 25’ S by 158° 53’ W. The Hs is 38° 40.9’.

A. What is LMT? B. What is Ho? C. What is the EP?

Answers A. LMT is 12:57:15 B. Ho is 38° 52.2’ C. EP: 22° 25’ S, 158° 53’ W
