The Differences between Boat & Yacht Insurance

When you look at a boat insurance policy, you'll notice the language is unlike your typical homeowner's or auto policy. What you may not know is that vessel insurance can even vary from policy to policy, depending on a variety of factors.

Yachts are classified as vessels 27 feet or more in length, while boats are 26 feet or less. No matter what type of vessel you have, when it comes to the type of policy, seek out Agreed Value. Agreed Value policies are cover all damages, except for sails, outboard motors, canvas covers, cushions or other specified items. They do not reflect depreciation or market value, which means you will get a greater settlement in the event of a claim. Other policies such as Actual Cash Value may be cheaper, but they also factor in depreciation and market value and will subtract that from your payout.

Also, when it comes to navigation limit, boat and yacht insurance policies can vary due to different exposures. For example, a boat policy typically includes unlimited overland transportation on a trailer, while a larger yacht policy would restrict overland trailering to only several hundred miles.

Deductible amounts can also differ. A yacht policy can offer deductibles of up to 3 percent for any hull damage. However, deductibles for a total loss, marine electronics loss or a windstorm loss can vary depending on your particular policy. By contrast, a boat policy offers a flat deductible, typically of $250, $500 or $1,000.

Because yachts inherently incur more risk due to their size and navigation, the liability feature of yacht insurance provides broad coverage designed to shield you from the effects of the maritime law. Your coverage is much broader than with a typical watercraft liability policy, and offers protection to permissive users, captain and crew liabilities, along with the Jones Act, a federal law that allows a seaman who gets injured on the job to bring a suit for damages against his or her employer.

Besides, yacht insurance addresses salvage to a damaged yacht, legal liability to remove a sunken wreck and uninsured boater coverages. In a typical boat policy, only general liability protection is included. For example, if your boat sinks in the Great Lakes or any of its tributaries, the U.S. Coast Guard says it must be raised. There will be salvage costs, fuel clean-up - and you'll have to pay the bill regardless of your coverage.

While most yacht policies provide salvage coverage, they do so in different ways. Some choose to limit the dollar coverage to a stated amount or percentage of the hull amount.

Another very important part of the salvage issue is wreck removal. Some companies include wreck removal under their hull coverage, which then limits its value. A true yacht policy will include it under the protection and indemnity limit, which will provide much higher limits and additional coverage.

Get Your Insurance Quote

Another difference is that in yacht policies, your legal defense is in addition to protection and indemnity limits, while boat policies offer legal defense within the limit of liability.

Yacht policies have warranties, including the seaworthiness, navigation limits territories and navigation lay-up limits. While some boat policies do not require warranties, others may incorporate them.

Many boaters consider adding their vessels to their homeowner's insurance in an attempt to reduce their costs. Although the cost is substantially less when you add a boat to a homeowner's policy, but you don't get near the coverage. In this case, the old adage still holds true - you get what you pay for. The bottom line is not the amount of your policy premium, but how much you will collect at the time of loss.

Voyage insurance

Yacht shipping: dyt’s voyage insurance.

Yacht shipping with DYT is now more attractive and cost effective with the introduction of our new and expanded voyage insurance program. When you book your yacht delivery service with us, you get the benefit of a complete insurance package provided by Nausch, Hogan & Murray, Inc., a well-recognized insurance brokerage firm in the marine industry.

This uniquely tailored insurance program has been carefully designed to make your  yacht shipping  experience safe and simple. As a result of DYT’s excellent safety record, the premiums for cargo insurance have been substantially reduced, coverage has been broadened, and the benefits of these savings and protection are being passed directly to you. DYT insures the voyage at no extra charge to you, reducing the total cost of yacht shipping and giving you the comfort and convenience of “one stop” shopping. This approach saves you time and money as DYT handles it all for you.

CARGO AND LIABILITY VOYAGE INSURANCE PROGRAM

Once a yacht owner books a trip with DYT, voyage insurance is automatically included up to the declared value of the yacht. The protection afforded by our yacht shipping program – including Liability and All Risks of Physical Loss or Damage – is active from the moment a yacht passes DYT’s stern at loading port through its unloading at the discharge port, including transshipments.

As of 2006, our voyage insurance program has been expanded to provide even broader insurance coverage to all of our yachts, including operating machinery damage during loading and unloading. In addition, our yacht shipping insurance program now also provides:

DEBRIS REMOVAL:

The cost of debris removal in the unlikely event of an accident that requires the removal and disposal of debris of the yacht, or any part thereof, is covered through the insurance program in addition to the physical loss to the yacht.

INSTITUTE WAR AND STRIKES CLAUSE 281:

Provides coverage for any physical loss or damage resulting from war, civil war, revolution, capture, seizure, arrest, as well as from strikers, locked-out workmen, or persons taking part in labour disturbances, riots or civil commotions.

The program now includes liability protection for all yacht owners, riders and crew, up to $10,000,000 USD.

VOYAGE LIMIT:

Each voyage is insured for the total declared value up to $150,000,000 USD, an amount sufficient to ensure that all yachts on board DYT’s carriers are properly protected during the yacht shipping process.

DEDUCTIBLES:

Physical Loss or Damage : Any claim for physical loss or damage is subject to a Deductible $5,000 USD per yacht per voyage, regardless of the value declared. In many cases, the $5,000 USD deductible is considerably less than the deductible on yacht owners’ operating policies.

Liability : Any claim for coverage under the liability policy is subject to a $10,000 USD deductible.

WAIVER OF SUBROGATION:

Because all declared yachts are protected under the same insurance program, underwriters have waived subrogation against all assureds, thereby eliminating the potential of a subrogation claim against any yacht owner for physical loss or damage.

AFFORDABLE OPTIONAL PORT RISK COVERAGE:

In response to our yacht owners’ frequent requests for insurance for their yachts for short periods of time prior to or after transport, an Optional Port Risk Cover was exclusively designed for DYT customers at an additional nominal cost for values up to $10,000,000 USD. Any yacht owner interested in purchasing this port risk cover should contact Nausch, Hogan and Murray directly at +1 212 480 4200.

Security is provided by the following respectable underwriters: Fortis, St. Paul Fire & Marine, Lloyd’s Syndicates, AXA, and XL Specialty.

In the unlikely event of a yacht shipping claim, we request you to immediately report any damage to the loading master or Captain and thereafter forward the claim form to Nausch, Hogan & Murray as soon thereafter as possible, to ensure an expeditious and accurate handling of your claim.

DYT’s insurance programs for our marine transportation services have been arranged through Nausch Hogan & Murray and placed with highly reliable insurance companies in, amongst others, the United States, London and the Netherlands.

Yacht Trucking

Boat Transport and Yacht Shipping Insurance Coverage

yacht transport insurance

A special note of emphasis needs to be made here that Yacht Trucking carefully follows all the rules-of-the-road concerning State DOT Regulations. These regulations and permit restrictions are very cumbersome and many transporters often avoid complete compliance in an attempt to reduce cost. In doing so they place your boat at risk; this means your boat has inadequate or no coverage so the transporter can save time and money for himself. Often less experienced transporters are running illegal without even being aware of a laws or regulations they’re violating because they lack experience in every state. Ignorance of the law is no protection from a violation and again, the transporter has placed your boat at risk due to his lack of knowledge. Yacht Trucking has the experience and knowledge to navigate your boat through all of the laws and regulations that rule the highways of every state. Annually we successfully complete up to 80 cross-country transports and have an exceptional safety and DOT record.

For a frank and honest conversation about how to best transport your yacht, please  contact us  today. We have the professional service you deserve.

***** 5 STAR SERVICE!!! Yacht Trucking did an outstanding job relocating our 40′ sailboat from San Diego, CA to Anacortes, WA. Our driver was extremely professional and took expert care in getting our boat secured for transport. He remained in constant communication throughout the trip, sending daily updates of his progress.  He put all my anxiety to rest and delivered our boat early in perfect condition. There’s no doubt that I will pursue his services again without hesitation.

YT just completed the delivery of our Beneteau 393 from Texas to t he San Francisco Bay area. I was very impressed by their professionalism and attention to detail. Not just double checking, but triple checking important items. Their crew was very helpful with the MANY questions I had and provided a lot of details that helped me understand and feel comfortable throughout the entire process. Highly recommended!

Exceptional customer service with top-notch loadmasters that were especially careful when loading my motor cruiser onto the cradle and ship. I have moved my boat across the Atlantic 3 times and this was by far my best experience. I would highly recommend Yacht Trucking to anyone shipping their yacht across the Atlantic or the World and will use them again when the need arises.

Yacht Trucking relocated my 40′ trawler from Maine to Kentucky and the transport could not have gone any better. Getting out of the New England States is always a challenge with oversize loads and they worked hard during planning to have the necessary permits and routes without overspending. The driver kept me updated throughout the each day with texts, pics and phone calls as needed to show how the trip was going. Their equipment is first-rate. Highly recommended service.

Everyone with Yacht Trucking was extremely easy to communicate with and I received excellent service from the driver and loader. We felt very comfortable with the entire process from the minute we signed our contract; to the day our boat was delivered to the port in Port Everglades from Ventura and loaded onto the ship’s deck; all the way through until it arrived in Majorca safe and sound; exceptional people to work with for shipping sailboats overseas.

Great Affordable Service – they just finished moving my 45′ Sea Ray from Miami to San Diego – very reasonable cost – ahead of schedule delivery – no damage – no extras – Great to find that SERVICE WITH A SMILE (my smile ) is still available in the US. Would highly recommend these guys to move a boat for anyone in need.

Outstanding experience transporting my houseboat from West Virginia to upstate New York. Equipment was specialized for transporting boats. The driver really knew his stuff and was very detailed in loading. I felt very confident that boat would arrive safely. Good communication and fair rates. I would highly recommend if them to anyone who needs to move a boat.

I was very pleased with the professionalism, price, and service from Yacht Trucking when they moved my 51’ Bluewater Coastal Cruiser from Marathon in the Florida Keys north to Pensacola.  I would definitely hire them again!

Boat Shipping Insurance

Boat shipping insurance is a must-have item for private parties when your vessel is transported. You want to make sure that your asset is covered in the unfortunate event of an accident. Being prepared and doing your homework is wise when it comes to shipping large valuable items like a boat. You need to know that your normal boat insurance policy is probably not going to cover your vessel when it is being shipped over the road by a trucking company. The federal government’s minimum requirement for trucking companies that transport boats are to maintain $100,000 worth of cargo insurance at all times. If your vessel is valued at over $100,000 and the boat shipping company you are working with only has the minimum coverage amount, you will need to talk to their insurance company to purchase additional insurance for your shipment. If the boat shipping company you have chosen to work with on your shipment has enough insurance to cover the value of your boat, then you still want to do a few things. Mainly to have the insurance company lists you as a certificate holder on the insurance certificate. In the event of a claim, you are listed as a certificate holder. We will walk you through the steps of dealing with a trucking company’s insurance provider, so you are 100% sure you have boat shipping insurance.

  • Ask the boat shipper you are working with to fax you their “package.” This is a standard phrase used in the trucking industry that means you’re asking for a copy of your federal authority, insurance certificate, and a W-9. Any trucking company dispatcher will know precisely what you mean when asked for their “package”. In the event they don’t, simply as them for the 3 items.
  • Call the insurance company that’s listed on the insurance certificate. Tell them that you would like to be listed as a “certificate holder.” They will ask you “who is the insured”? Give them the name of the boat shipping company you are working with, the name should be on the certificate. They will ask you for your address and fax number. You can set up a free e-fax account online, or some companies will e-mail you a copy of the certificate as well.

It’s as easy as that. Your boat is now insured for the over-the-road trip you’re preparing it for. There are a few other things you should do when deciding which boat shipping company you will use. Choosing the one with the cheapest quote isn’t always the most brilliant option for private parties. If you have to buy additional boat shipping insurance, that will cost you more money and take time to set up. So you want to consider all this when deciding which shipper to go with. You can also check out a company’s history using our safer tool, which queries the federal motor carrier database. You can learn more about that when learning how to select the right boat shipper for your needs.

 We always appreciate your comments.

“We really appreciated your company’s information on how to get our sailboat ready to ship. We started out looking for the cheapest company to hire but wound up picking one with a quote that was in the middle. They already had more things in place that would have cost us extra in the long run. Much appreciated information”.

Yacht Transport to Any Destination in the World

Brooks Yacht Transport offers worldwide all-included ocean transport for yachts. We are the gold standard of yacht transport companies and maintain this reputation through meticulous attention to detail and thorough communication. We offer fully-insured bespoke yacht transport solutions for every customer, and pride ourselves on customer service that is unparalleled in the yacht transport industry.

Why Brooks Yacht Transport Is Different

We see these as our main competitive differentiators in the Yacht Transport Industry.

WE ONLY SHIP YACHTS

Moving a yacht is not like moving other cargo. We are NOT a general cargo shipping company, we are yacht and boat specialists and we will know how to properly prepare your boat for safe transport.

VIP CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE

We are a customer service company FIRST and a transport company second. We love working with superyachts and megayachts, but unlike other companies, we give as much attention to any boat, regardless of the size.

WE SERVICE ALL SHIPPING ROUTES

We are able to utilize any ship out there; we aren’t limited to only providing you with the sailing dates of our own ships like many other larger yacht transporters in the market.

Detailed Process: Yacht Transport by Ocean

Tell us about your boat & route, we do the research, contract is signed, your yacht is transported, ocean yacht transport: frequently asked questions, what are advantages of transporting my yacht via ocean liner versus having a captain & crew deliver my yacht.

There are many good reasons to transport a yacht by liner rather than hiring a captain.

First and foremost, transporting your boat means sparing it from significant wear and tear, engine hours, and the possibility of interior or exterior damage or engine malfunction.

Another reason to have your yacht shipped to its destination instead of motored is the cost of fuel. Depending on the type of boat, the cost of fuel consumption on a long distance delivery will come very close to the cost of transport by ocean liner.

We make the process stress free. You never worry about your boat running aground or experiencing other structural or mechanical failure that could delay your yacht reaching its destination by months, and costing you indefinite sums for repair.

Even though with yacht transport by liner there’s no absolutely guaranteed date of arrival, you do know that you won’t run into an unexpected long-term maintenance or repair scenario between your origin and destination.

With ocean yacht transport by liner, you also have complete certainty of liability – every time you transport your boat with us you have a full-coverage all-risk marine cargo insurance policy

Why don’t we know exact dates for loading & delivery of my boat?

Sadly, guaranteed pick-up dates don’t exist in ocean transport – regardless of the shipper or transporter. In fact, if an ocean yacht transporter is giving you a guaranteed pick-up date well in advance of shipping, this is not trustworthy information and very much a red flag.

It’s impossible to know exactly what day the ship is going to arrive at the port because of the possibility of whether delays, port congestion, or delays at prior ports. Once the ship has reached port, we will have a much more accurate idea of your delivery date, but because of the many uncontrollable factors in the international shipping industry at large, we have to use our best judgment and err on the side of caution in providing you with estimated dates.

If we are a month or more away of shipping, you can expect a loading window of approximately 15 days. That window narrows as the ship gets closer & clears each port on its schedule before your port of loading.

How will my boat be prepared for ocean transport?

Initial preparations may take place before your boat gets to port. Perhaps your boat was shrinkwrapped at your marina or boatyard. Perhaps you had a custom cradle built for your boat in advance etc. These preparations depend on the type of boat and your preference.

Next, there are a few different options for how your boat can get to port for loading. We can deliver your boat by truck if it’s of road legal size. Otherwise, you or a designated friend or professionally hired captain can bring your boat to port for loading.

Once your yacht has reached the port, final preparations are made prior to shipping. The cradle might be built on the deck of the ship custom-fit to your boat, your boat may be lashed and strapped securely to the deck of the ship. Experienced certified loadmasters, experienced certified cradle builders, or experienced certified divers may all be involved in the final preparations of your boat.

Your boat will be loaded onto the liner either with a heavy-duty crane that is geared to the deck of the ship, or it may be loaded by other means such as mobile port crane, or by roll on – roll off if that’s your method of shipment (see below our detailed guide on loading methods). We will know which loading method is appropriate for your yacht. Please give us a call if you have any questions or concerns!

Do you own the ship that will be transporting my yacht?

We do not own ocean liners. For your yacht transport, there is no advantage whatsoever to using a company that owns their own ships. Most ship-owning companies are actually more expensive because they have greater overhead, and the customer service that you receive will be inferior. All NVOCC companies (like us) have access to the same ships on the same tradelines.

Please give us a call and ask us if you have additional questions about Ocean Yacht Transport. We are here 7 days a week and would love to hear from you!

Yacht Loading Methods

Below we describe the various ways of loading your yacht onto an ocean liner

Lift-On/Lift-Off

Roll-on/roll-off, float-on/float-off.

The Lift On – Lift Off transport method is the most common in the industry. It is straightforward, safe and most cost-effective in many cases. If our team determines that Lift-On, Lift-Off is best for your transport, your yacht will need to be brought shipside, by sea or by truck. Heavy-duty slings are carefully placed under the hull of your boat by professional divers at the instruction of an experienced loadmaster. The loadmaster will have determined the correct lifting points for your hull in advance. At this point, your yacht is slowly and delicately crane-lifted out of the water or truck-bed, and placed on top of a custom built arrangement of lumber and steel stands that cradle the vessel onboard. These cranes are often rated for hundreds of tons of load capacity and can lift your yacht like a feather. Your boat is securely lashed down to the deck and cradle, and the process is simply reversed at your port of destination.

Flatrack shipping is very useful for boats that are shorter than 40 feet, do not exceed height restrictions (which vary by route and ship), and need to be transported along less common routes and schedules. Flatracks are essentially standard 40’ shipping containers without sidewalls and a roof. This allows your yacht’s dimensions to go beyond the parameters of standard shipping containers, but with the same ease of loading. Because of the container-like design, these platforms are available for use on most major shipping lines worldwide, year-round, and at a relatively low cost. Custom-built cradling is provided if necessary.

Flat Rack Yacht Transport for Ocean Liner

The Roll-On/Roll-Off transport method is a very attractive shipping option if your yacht is less than 60 feet in length, and less than 15-18 feet in height. In this method, your yacht is wheeled on board the stern ramp of a ship that is specially designed for rolling cargo. Your yacht can be rolled onto the ship on its own trailer, or on top of a specialized rolling flatbed and cradle. Roll-On/Roll-Off is a fantastic method of transport because of the weather protection provided by the boat being enclosed within the ship, the frequency of the ship schedules, and the fact it’s generally the most cost-effective method of transport if possible for your yacht!

Roll on Roll off Yacht Transportation Example

The Break Bulk (otherwise known as Out-of-Gauge) transport method is utilized when a yacht must be shipped on board a container or “break bulk” liner vessel due to route or season, but the yacht’s dimensions make standard container or Flatrack loading impossible. In this case, your yacht is lifted by the same means as the Lift-On/Lift-Off method onto a platform between rows of containers for safety, or directly onto the deck of the ship in its own custom-built steel cradle.

The Float-On/Float-Off yacht transport method is done with the use of semi-submersible vessels. These ships are engineering marvels that were originally designed to transport and launch oil rigs, but have since been utilized to transport a variety of cargo that is simply too large or heavy to be safely lifted by cranes, and must be floated over the submerged deck of these very special ships. Due to the fascinating coverage of many of these operations, our customers will often ask if this method would be best for their yacht. This method is great for megayachts that cannot be lifted safely, but this transport method is actually not necessary for most yachts. Most yachts, including many superyachts, can be safely lifted on a traditional cargo vessel at a lesser cost. There are, however, some instances where this transport method is cost effective and convenient, in which case we are happy to offer it as one of our many options!

For yacht transports that can be done by land, we offer yacht trucking. This ranges from tri-axle bunk trailers to specialized lowboy boat haulers for oversized boats with high clearance. Trucking is often required for domestic yacht transport, due to The Jones Act (Merchant Marine Act of 1920), which prohibits ocean freight to be delivered between U.S. ports if the ship is not U.S. built, U.S. flag, and fully crewed and supported by U.S. labor. We offer road transport of any distance, ranging from local moves, to cross-country, to international. We have thoroughly vetted, experienced drivers positioned in the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Europe. Can my yacht be moved by truck ?

Having a car shipped or transported can cause stress and anxiety, especially if you’ve never done it before. Chief among your concerns is ensuring that you protect your car should an accident happen along the way. In this article, the MarketWatch Guides team explains what you need to know about auto transport insurance. Find out what’s covered, who covers it and what to look for when researching transport companies and what coverage they carry.

As the customer shipping your car , it’s not your responsibility to have auto transport insurance. However, since there are some damages that may be covered by your own personal auto insurance when your car is in transit, we have a few car insurance companies to recommend at the end of this article.

Key Takeaways :

  • Auto transport insurance is critical to have when shipping a car, but you don’t have to buy it yourself.
  • Your car carrier must carry the federal minimum limit on auto transport insurance, including liability and cargo coverages.
  • Thoroughly review your car hauler’s insurance policy and triple-check your personal car insurance policy to make sure you’re adequately protected.

Why You Can Trust The MarketWatch Guides Team

The MarketWatch Guides Team is committed to providing reliable information to help you make the best decision possible about insuring your vehicle. Because consumers rely on us to provide objective and accurate information, we created a comprehensive rating system to formulate our rankings of the best car insurance companies. We collected data on dozens of auto insurance providers to grade the companies on a wide range of ranking factors. After 800 hours of research, the end result was an overall rating for each provider, with the insurers that scored the most points topping the list.

What Is Auto Transport Insurance?

Auto transport insurance is what it sounds like. Also known as car shipping insurance, this coverage applies to cars that are being shipped from Point A to Point B. The companies responsible for transporting cars buy the insurance protecting the vehicle when it gets loaded, transported and unloaded.

To legally transport your car, vehicle shipping companies must have enough insurance to cover damages that might occur while the vehicle is in transit. Even though it’s the auto hauler’s responsibility to have adequate insurance, it’s always a good idea to make sure they have the federal minimums required, which typically include liability and cargo insurance. Review the company’s auto transport insurance policy and make sure you feel comfortable with the level of protection provided.

As a car owner, you don’t have to carry any transport insurance, but it’s still smart to keep your car insured while it gets shipped. Why? You’ll need to drop it off at Point A and pick it up at Point B, and it’s never a good idea (not to mention illegal in most states) to drive an uninsured car, even a few miles.

Secondly, if you run into any issues with the carrier’s auto transport insurance, your car insurance could help out. For example, if your car gets damaged by hail during a transport through the Midwest and your carrier didn’t have the proper insurance to cover that, your comprehensive coverage could step in to pay for damages.

Likewise, suppose your car is damaged in an accident while being transported. In that case, you might have a claim with your collision coverage to supplement anything not covered by the auto transport insurance.

Before you begin the transport, check with your insurance company what coverage you have and don’t have.

Types of Auto Transport Insurance

To understand the various auto transport insurance coverages available, you’ll first need to understand the players involved with shipping your car. If you’re sending your car across many miles — or even a short distance — work with an auto transport broker, an auto transport carrier or both.

An auto transport broker can navigate the shipping process and connect you with carriers in your area. Brokers typically work with a network of auto transport companies. It’s easy for a broker to find quality options for your car’s move.

Of course, the auto transport carrier — also known as a car hauler, auto hauler, car transporter or auto transporter — ultimately will be responsible for shipping your vehicle. If you know of a reliable carrier or feel confident in your ability to find one, you can skip the “middleman” broker and work directly with the carrier.

However, because most carriers rely on brokers to connect them with customers or function as dual brokers/carriers themselves, it’s entirely likely that you’ll end up working with a broker one way or the other. Whatever way you ship your car, here are the types of auto transport insurance to know.

A few important things to note about each of these types of coverage:

  • Carrier insurance does not cover things inside your vehicle. Most companies recommend removing all personal items from your vehicle before shipping.
  • Brokers don’t always offer supplemental insurance. Strictly speaking, broker insurance is an optional bonus, and as such, might only be offered in some cases to “sweeten the deal.” When shopping around for a broker, be sure to ask if they have any additional coverages available.
  • Customer insurance does not always protect the car in transit. Be sure to check with your agent to find out if your policy will remain active while the transport company hauls your car.

It’s also key to note that auto transport insurance policies vary from carrier to carrier. When comparing quotes from different vehicle shipping companies, take a close look at their insurance offerings, read the fine print and make sure you understand exactly what is and isn’t covered. Then, double-check with your own insurance company to see if they’ll cover any potential “holes” in your protection plan.

Car Transport Insurance Requirements

Because many people transport their cars across state lines, auto transport carriers are required to meet federal minimums on insurance. A standard car transport policy usually includes both liability and cargo insurance.

Before your car shipper takes possession of the vehicle for transport, it will conduct a thorough inspection to identify any pre-existing damage. A detailed report on the condition of the vehicle will come with what’s known as the bill of lading. This report, which is often a digital document, will include descriptions (and possibly photographs) of any damage, including dents, dings, scratches and other blemishes.

It’s important to be present for the inspection to make sure that you and your shipper agree on the condition of the car pre-transit. This can help avoid both headache and hassle if damage is discovered post-transit.

Equally important is inspecting your car again once it’s been delivered. You should look at your car before you drive it away from the unloading site, but some companies will allow for up to $800 for any damages discovered within 48 hours of delivery.

How Much Does Auto Transport Insurance Cost?

As the owner of the shipped car , you won’t pay for auto transport insurance. The insurance is on the car hauler and the costs will fall to them to cover.

With that said, however, it’s highly recommended that you maintain car insurance on your vehicle even while it’s in transit. Doing so serves as an added layer of protection and could help with any damages not covered by your auto transport carrier, like damage in a weather storm, for example.

While you don’t need to buy auto transport insurance, per se, it’s a good idea to make sure your standard car insurance policy is up to date. While you’re at it, be sure to check with your agent to find out what will and won’t be covered during shipping.

Do You Need Auto Transport Insurance?

Yes you do, but it’s nothing you need to buy — or even can buy. What you need to do instead is thoroughly review your carrier’s auto transport insurance.

When researching auto transport carriers, read through their insurance offerings to make sure they have both liability and cargo coverage. The amounts of these coverages will vary by company, but a good rule of thumb is to look for at least $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $350,000 in cargo insurance.

Once you’ve done that, review your car insurance policy to make sure it’s up to snuff as well. Read through your policy details or check with your agent to see if your vehicle’s covered during transport.

Auto Transporter Insurance: The Bottom Line

Auto transport insurance, or car shipping insurance, is critical to understand and vital to have before shipping your car, but it’s nothing you need to buy. Your car carrier must meet federal minimum-insurance requirements, but it’s really up to you to do the research and make sure they’re properly insured.

When shopping for a company to ship your car , be sure to go through their insurance policies with a fine-tooth comb to make sure you’re comfortable with their levels of protection. Additionally, be sure to review your own car insurance policy to understand what’s covered and what’s not throughout the transport process.

Recommendations for Auto Insurance

No matter where your car’s final destination may be, it’s always important to have a well-rounded policy in place. The MarketWatch Guides team recommends the following reputable insurers for quality coverage you can rely on.

Progressive: Low Rates for High-Risk Drivers

Progressive is always a good place to start when shopping for car insurance. It offers full-coverage car insurance policies as well as a bevy of optional coverages for boosted protection. Based on our research, Progressive’s rates are about 7% cheaper than the national average for good drivers, but the company also has affordable options for drivers who may be considered higher risk.

A full coverage car insurance policy from Progressive costs about $1,611 per year for good drivers.

Nationwide: Best for Usage-Based Insurance

Available in 46 states, Nationwide offers a range of products and many ways for drivers to save money on car insurance, including not one but two usage-based programs. SmartRide is Nationwide’s standard usage-based insurance product that gives customers the chance to save significantly based on how safely they drive. The second program, SmartMiles, has flexible monthly rates based on the number of miles driven.

A full-coverage car insurance policy from Nationwide cost about $1,281 per year for good drivers.
