Jamie is a consulting engineer with over 20 years mechanical design experience across a broad range of new build and refurbishment projects in both the marine and construction sectors. As a professional design team member he has been responsible for project delivery from inception through to completion, working closely with clients to ensure design proposals and subsequent installations meet their specific requirements.

Since relocating to Devon in 2005, Jamie has been actively involved with the marine industry. As a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster he worked for local sailing schools, has extensive experience of brokerage and new boat sales and being a volunteer helm on RNLI Dart Inshore Lifeboat he values highly the safety and seaworthiness of vessels putting to sea.

Jamie now runs JME Marine, an independent Dartmouth based consultancy specialising in Pre-Purchase, Insurance Inspection and Damage surveys. He also undertakes Code Compliance examinations of small commercial vessels on behalf of MECAL an MCA Certifying Authority.

Insurance update Surveys

Insurance companies require that that their owners have their boats surveyed for insurance purposes, in some cases as soon as 5 years after launch and commissioning. Similarly, after major refit or rebuild, there will be a valuation required to ensure the vessel has the correct level of cover. If your boat is based in Devon or Cornwall, Olsen Marine will ensure that Insurance company requirements are met. However this type of Survey, rather than being perceived by Owners as an onerous financial cost, is often used to advantage by Owners. By liasing and working with the Surveyor, owners can gain a deeper insight into their boat, which can often lead to a safer, more efficient system or method of operation- the result being a more rewarding time afloat. Damage Surveys & Claim Advice

If your boat is damaged by a third party, or for some reason you have been responsible for causing damage, first notify your insurance company and then contact Olsen Marine. We can handle everything on your behalf, from initial survey of damage, right through to final acceptance of repairs. Where quite clearly the damage caused is not your fault, there is a good chance that the whole claim, including our fees, can be recovered from a third party, thus preventing you from losing any excess or no claims bonus to which you are entitled.

If, in closing that new boat deal, you need to take in a PX, which is a growing trend, Olsen Marine surveying can offer a trade service in carrying out any form of survey, from a basic structure, to a full pre-purchase, prior to your purchase. B oats within Devon or Cornwall can be easily and economically inspected, but if further afield, this can of course be arranged.

What’s involved in a boat survey?

The purpose of obtaining a pre-purchase survey is to discover the overall condition of a boat before you buy it. To accomplish this goal a good surveyor will spend hours observing the structure, sails and rig, machinery, and testing all major systems, electronics, galley equipment, and other items important to the function and fit of your future boat.

The two most important tools that a surveyor possesses do not consist of a box of fancy digital instruments, but his experience and his skills in observation. Using those, in conjunction with selected instruments, careful interpretation of all those findings can be converted to a pragmatic overview of the vessel.

Falmouth Marine Surveys

We offer a range of marine services ranging from pre-purchase, insurance and damage surveys through to consultation and project management.

My name is Sol Redman Stainer and I am a YDSA trained yacht surveyor. I have worked in the industry for over 15 years as a project manager and consultant with a local yacht building company, along with this experience I offer expert technical advice from a boatbuilding background which can help you avoid unforeseen expenses. Based in Falmouth, Cornwall but can provide services further afield.

Pre-purchase Survey

A comprehensive survey commissioned by a potential buyer prior to purchase. The report may also be used by a finance house if one is involved and the client’s insurance company when they come to insure the vessel after purchase.

Insurance Survey

Commissioned by the owner of a vessel when their insurer has requested a survey prior to renewing an existing policy. Typically, these are required when the vessel is twenty years old though some can request them within as little as five years from build.

Damage Survey

Usually commissioned by the marine insurance company when a vessel they cover has suffered loss or damage. 

Wooden Yacht Surveys

 A visual inspection will be carried out to reveal any evidence of movement in the planking and fastenings, hammer sounding will be used to detect areas of decay. It is important that a thorough examination as possible by getting good access to the hull and frames is conducted. 

Tonnage Survey

This is an exercise of measuring and a calculation based on a set formula, it is required for part1 registration with the U. K’s shipping register for commercial ships and pleasure vessels.

Marine Consultancy and Project Management

Repairing or refitting any vessel can be a costly affair, this is where I can help save money and guide where it can be best spent on a project, preliminary tests and careful dismantlement can be a good way to make those tricky decisions during the early stages of an undertaking, when budget and time frame are the most pressing factors. 

Osmosis Treatment

Assessing the extent of moisture ingress the FRP laminates has sustained efficiently, advising the best method of drying and returning the substrate to a strong, fair water resistant state is the aim. 

Sea trials are undertaken to establish the working condition of the vessels systems. All instrumentation, systems and installations will be examined.

1. Marine Surveyor in Salcombe, Devon. Lincombe Boatyard (Winters Marine)

Winters Marine (Lincombe boatyard) is at the North end of the harbour.  Although tidal and no quay to lie alongside,  locals Roger and his son in the central pic are very experienced and ensure there are no dramas when lifting/launching boats.  Their slipway hoist can haul craft upto 30 tonnes and their crane is useful for lift and hold surveys.

2. Marine Surveyors Salcombe, Devon. Salcombe Boat Lift, Shadycombe Carpark. (Batsons)

Boats can be hauled and washed off at Shadycombe Carpark with the 12 tonne boat lift.  The harbour authority operates the lift.

3. Marine Surveyors Salcombe, Devon. Frogmore Boatyard

At the head of the Salcombe esturary, the yard has hard standing and can haul/launch boats upto 30ft and 5 tonnes. Usually only survey boats already laid up. Their number is 01548 531257

Dear Roger, I must thank you for a very professional report on XXXXX and more so for the time you have taken over and above discussing the various issues with this yacht.

While I appreciated the issues are repairable, the cost of doing so to the correct standard soon mounts up, the turning point in the deal for me, was once I got the vendor to accept the issues reported he would not reduce the price to allow the work to be completed by Darthaven as you recommended, but wanted to repair the yacht himself!   I think this answered the questions of why there were so many issues with this yacht! If he is the marine engineer he reports to be why did he not attend to them before, this then started to raise doubt in my mind about this yacht so in the end I was relived to walk away. Following all this he asked again for your report so he could see what he needed to attend to before the next person had a survey!

I take away from this a very positive learning curve in buying a yacht and again thank you for your assistance

Hi Roger Thank you for all your hard work on that. It is an epic tome! I've spoken to the broker and discussed various ways forward. I'm putting off until Monday a decision on what to do but I got the distinct impression that there could be movement on the price based on proper in-the-water testing of the engine. I may still go ahead if the price is right, fool that I am. ....  Kind regards

Morning Roger, I trust you to are up early writing glowing things about Sea Thyme. It was a good few days wasn't it - I learnt a load thank you.   I am off to the boat today to meet the owner and to sign various things.I have completed your contract and find myself thoroughly stitched up again!   I have sent the money. I take it the Bowman's owner's partner, was realistic - nice chap when I spoke to him.   Hard news to take when you find your boat is terminally ill.   Let me know if and when you find outs where GRP boats go to when they die.   Is there a massive landfill site somewhere do you think?  Anyway many thanks, you undoubtedly saved me a nightmare and a fortune in both time and money and I am very grateful.   Job well done. Dear Roger, I am in receipt of your excellent survey - I have to say that it is most thorough and informative, and be assured that I will be delighted to recommend your services in future. The engine report has revealed a few minor issues (breather hoses and cooler covers) which will be resolved. Roger, Many thanks for the report Roger - and I'm sorry that you had to conduct the survey in such appalling weather. Further to our discussion this morning on the basis of your findings we have now pulled out of the purchase of ‘XXXXXXX'.  I have shared the conclusions page with the owner, but haven't released the report - they didn't seem too interested so I didn't bother. I did mention this morning that I had a couple of small queries with the report but as they have become irrelevant and I haven't shared the full report I won't worry any further, unless the owners come back.  Also as mentioned, we are now looking at another vessel, which I will write to you separately on shortly.Thanks again for your assistance and endurance! Dear Roger, It occurred to me yesterday that I hadn't contacted you since we spoke or since I received the survey you did on XXXXX in Holland. Having read it through in some detail, I was generally very satisfied with the boat's condition and all that you said about it. I negotiated a hefty discount on the price which I thought was satisfactory and completed payment yesterday. I'm spending time aboard soon attending to some of the vital works, the yard in Brouwershaven are doing the lion's share. With fair winds and a bit of luck we will be bringing her back to her new berth in the UK during the Easter weekend. Hi Roger, Just a short note by way of an update since we last spoke.  We did indeed go ahead with the purchase of Mallard following your endorsement on the vessel.  We have a fortnight to sail her back to our home port, Burnham-on-Crouch, and have plans to visit a number of places around the Solent and the south coast - no fixed plan as of yet and much will depend on weather of course. If you're around anywhere over the next week let us know and we'll see if we can meet up for a beer.  If we don't get to meet I would like to thank you again for your assistance in finding the right vessel. I wanted to thank you for the survey you undertook for us recently, and to let you know how things are going. We are proceeding with the purchase, with the seller putting in another £15k or so of work to bring the boat up to scratch (full re-rigging, new batteries x10, bilge pump - more than 20 items in all). We have you to thank for that. And with your additional observations and suggestions for remedial work in the coming years, we feel we have a good handle on what is to come.

Good news: we sent the sails off to a local loft for cleaning and inspection - the sails have some grease stains from an over-lubricated mast, and a little Sahara sand staining from sitting in the mast “almost unused since new". Thus with the patching of the stained area, we have sails that the sail loft say are of high quality (for cruising) and fit for "maybe 10 years of careful cruising use". We couldn’t believe our luck!
