Motor Yacht

Modern day icon of design Philippe Starck took the dreams of an individual and drew the 65 metre project that would become Wedge Too. Launched by Feadship in 2002, this striking, sophisticated and elegant model of the superyacht lifestyle combines modern and classic themes in Philippe Starck’s first superyacht project.

Expertly crafted, Wedge Too is a superyacht unlike anything else on the water; from her steel hull and aluminium superstructure with stunning wooden style, down to her quirky and unique interior also by Philippe Starck.

With unique elements running though her interior, such as thrones, wheelbarrow chairs, luminous stars and, most mysteriously, Gnomes, Wedge Too can accommodate 12 guests in bizarre and beautiful luxury.

A wide beam and spacious interiors means Wedge Too was built with enough room to house two complete owner’s decks, three VIP guest cabins, four guest staterooms and facilities for up to 20 crew on board to make any journey a luxurious experience.

Feadship’s 20-Year-Old ‘Wedge Too’ Is A Lesson In Timeless Naval Architecture

Feadship’s 20-Year-Old ‘Wedge Too’ Is A Lesson In Timeless Naval Architecture

John McMahon

There’s no purpose to this article other than a moment’s appreciation for this truly exquisite example of an early-2000’s build from Feadship.

If you take just a minute out of your day to join us in the marvel of ‘Wedge Too’, then our job is done. The graceful 65-metre beauty from the Dutch shipyard was dubbed a “spectacular departure from the norm” when it was built in 2002, and it’s for this reason that it’s just as easy on the eye two decades later.

Wedge Too Yacht

‘Wedge Too’ can accommodate 12 guests and features a complete owner’s deck, three VIP guest cabins, four guest staterooms, and facilities for up to twenty support staff. The cherry on top of this boat is actually the circular hot tub lounge area that you wouldn’t even know exists from water level to ensure maximum privacy. Reminiscent of a classic ocean liner’s ‘bird’s nest’, it could be the best vantage point on the whole vessel to enjoy sweeping vistas of St Barts or the Monaco Grand Prix.

There is no escaping the work of Philippe Starck. The Frenchman has designed everything from toothbrushes to South Beach hotels and Aprilia motorcycles to European disposal sites. Given his expansive portfolio, it is surprising that Starck had never designed a yacht. “I am an environmentalist and a left-winger,” Starck explains. “Yachts are among the daftest capitalist toys imaginable.”

In 1999, however, Starck considered designing a 213-foot Feadship. When confronted with the realization that the owner would have her Feadship built with or without his input, Starck recanted his disdain for fossil fuel– consuming ocean vessels and accepted the commission. “I decided I might as well at least help her create something different—a yacht that is not a mountain of gold,” he says. The result is Wedge Too, the largest yacht ever built by Feadship. De Voogt Naval Architects contributed their services, and the yacht was completed at Holland’s De Vries Shipyard.

When news of the Starck/Feadship collaboration began to spread, at least a few words of doubt were heard, most of them concerning presumed clashes between the mercurial Starck, with his penchant for the outré, and the staid craftspeople of De Vries. But accord-ing to Feadship Director Henk de Vries III, the relationship was harmonious. “The chance to work with Philippe Starck was very special to me,” says de Vries. “I’ve long been a great fan of his work, but he never struck me as the sort of person to become involved in designing a luxury yacht.”

However, the collaboration did encounter several hitches. “As builders with experience of what is sensible on a superyacht,” de Vries acknowledges, “we did stand our ground on a few points.” For instance, De Vries’ leaning toward the sensible is apparent in Wedge Too’s exterior, where the wheelhouse is clad with durable oiled teak rather than the mahogany that Starck proposed. Starck’s handiwork is evident throughout the interior, though, where he was given free rein to, as he says, “go crazy on the details and the furniture.”

One of Starck’s trademarks is an almost Dadaist delight in odd juxtapositions. The owners’ stateroom is furnished with a traditional Louis XVI writing desk—in which Starck integrated a 52-inch plasma TV. In the main lounge, a large thronelike seat features silver swans as armrests. At dinner, guests can sit on a banquette, a plastic urn, a metal or wooden chair, a cube that looks like an ice block, or a gnome. The family lounge includes a child’s seat decorated with thousands of colored beads depicting elephants, a wooden chair that resembles a wheelbarrow, and an upturned black homburg containing a green apple.

Wedge Too, however, is more than a mere floating platform for a designer’s fancy. Two 2,000-hp Caterpillar engines provide a cruising speed of nearly 19 mph, and the yacht has a range of 5,400 miles.

Starck enjoyed working on Wedge Too so much that his yachting work will continue; he is currently designing a 400-foot powerboat that looks like a cross between a nuclear submarine and a giant house slipper. While the design concept is not a traditional Feadship style, the Dutch company would not be averse to teaming with Starck once again. “He might be a superstar designer,” says de Vries, “but it was delightful working with Starck. I think Wedge Too has the classic simple style he envisioned, and I think we have achieved something quite remarkable.”

Hi guys, I came across an awesome yacht the other day, named W2. I now know it as a Feadship Wedge Too. I'm doing a bit of research for my writing purposes and wouldn't mind knowing if any of you know who owns this yacht? Many thanks indeed. PT.

AMG YF Moderator

Hi P.T... Welcome to the Forums! As you might discover, we try to not talk about owners, just the yachts, but in this case the owner was mentioned once before in a thread on the yacht; http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4114&postcount=17 With the Search-tool you will find more info on this and other yachts!
Hey AMG, Thanks for that. I should've known that talking about owners may have been a touchy subject, I was just curious. I look forward to reading the forum!
Yes, unfortunately we are not living in a perfect world and unless the owners are very high profiled and incourage publicity we should not disclose ownerships. However if you stay in Monaco, you will soon get the info you want anyway since there is always someone around the port that have first hand information. At the same time all long term residents has adapted a very low profile and when I was living there, my closest neighbour was a two yacht owner who never revealed that fact to me, maybe for security reasons. Nevertheless, he was assassinated in his home country recently...

Starck’s Choice: Legendary designer and, Feadship create a unique superyacht

The largest Feadship ever built has been delivered by the De Vries Shipyard in Aalsmeer, the Netherlands. Wedge Too, a 65-meter (213’10") twin screw motoryacht, has a complete owners deck, three VIP guest cabins, four guest staterooms, and facilities for up to 20 staff. With the legendary Philippe Starck embarking on his first superyacht project, both the exterior styling and the interior design are spectacular departures from the norm.

One day a very elegant lady came to visit Starck to discuss the design of a superyacht. "I am an environmentalist and a left winger: yachts are among the most daftest capitalist toys imaginable," lamented Starck. And then, realizing this lady was going to build one anyway, he changed his mind. "I decided I might as well at least help her create something different; a yacht that is not a mountain of gold. So I designed something that was timeless and elegant…"

A promise is a promise

These words echo Starck’s pledge to the owners of Wedge Too and Feadship back at the start of the project in Fall 1999. "I design for you a classic simple style; it will be wood, with white marble and white ceilings. That’s it, simple." And then a mischievous smile came across his face. "And then we go crazy on the details and the furniture."

He was true to his word … gnomes and thrones, wheelbarrow chairs and luminous stairs, foam-filled eggs and lights with crooked legs… Wedge Too is a boat packed with the most intricate surprises. An incredible range of custom-built tables, chairs, cabinets, desks, lamps, mirrors, chandeliers: the core interior is a backdrop to a host of exquisite and bizarre features, all of which can be changed at any time to keep the boat fresh and alive.

To bring all this about required exceptional cooperation between the long-established craftsman of De Vries and the eclectic tastes and ideas of a man bent on pure design. Complementing each other in so many ways, their collaboration has resulted in something truly unique.

"He might be a superstar designer but it was delightful working with Starck," says Henk de Vries III of the De Vries Shipyard."Of course there were certain things that absolutely had to be done his way. Yet once we’d figured out what ‘his way’ was, everything went very smoothly. It is actually not that complicated – it’s all about removing clutter and creating a clean look."

Simple and effective

In fact, it is the simplicity of the design philosophy that makes it so brilliant – and yet so difficult to conjure up in the first place. On Wedge Too, this bare bones approach (and the consequences this has for a yacht) is perhaps best illustrated by the owners deck.’

A long and straight passageway connects the lounge with the stateroom on this deck, and a design of this simplicity is very unforgiving should any deviation occur. For example, the flat panels have a groove in the middle that runs the entire length of the passage. This groove cannot be off center by even a tenth of a millimeter or this inconsistency will be immediately apparent to even the casual observer.

A similar rule applies to the finish of the Anigre woodwork itself. A typical Feadship finish, successfully applied on many projects, would be satin gloss filled grain. As well as ensuring that one no longer sees the texture of the wood, this is also the most efficient way of achieving a uniform finish.

"When Starck said he wanted a ‘hand-finished’ finish, we thought he was crazy," remembers Henk de Vries. "He added that he didn’t care how we did it but the effect had to be as if someone had just been casually working with a brush to stroke lacquer on the panels. Initially, the crew made a smooth finish and then went over it with a brush – but we found this excessive even for a boat of this stature!"

The eventual solution is not in the public domain. However, when finished, Starck’s vision was proven true to form. A passageway of this length, with only indirect lighting, would have been very difficult to achieve in completely smooth fashion. Now, thanks to all the textures, it is fascinating both visually and to the touch. In the process, Feadship’s craftsman have demonstrated once again their ability to meet the most unusual demands.

Starck himself gave an excellent summary of the relationship he had established with the builders when speaking at Wedge Too’s launch party. "This boat is a real love story. To produce a baby you have to be in love. I am in love with this yard and with its skilful workers and together we have created a beautiful baby."

Quick Enquiry

“The way we design, is we design fully custom, fully unique yachts, we start with a blank piece of paper and we start asking the client how they use the boat, what they want to do on board, what kind of experience they have but we also want input on what kind of styling they like... It’s about getting to learn about the owner and how they want to use the boat.” - Ronno Schouten, Design Manager of De Voogt Naval Architects

5 things to know about North Palm Beach mega-yacht owner, billionaire Michael Bozzuto

wedge 2 yacht owner

Billionaire Michael Bozzuto is fighting for the right to moor his 164-foot mega-yacht behind a waterfront house he owns at 932 Shore Dr. in North Palm Beach.

But the Village of North Palm Beach has told Bozzuto he doesn't have this right.

It's the latest example of how big money landing in Florida is running up against Old Florida residents who want their communities to stay low-key.

After years of disputes over the yacht, Bozzuto recently filed a lawsuit against the municipality, asking a judge to agree that he has the right to the use of his house and his dock.

Who is Michael Bozzuto, and why is he suing the Village of North Palm Beach?

Here are five things to know:

1. Billionaire Michael Bozzuto is a longtime North Palm Beach resident

Bozzuto is the billionaire owner of a privately held, family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut called Bozzuto's Inc. The company is a distributor of food and household products to retailers in New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Bozzuto's was founded by Michael's late father, Adam.

Even though Bozzuto's Inc. is based in Connecticut, Bozzuto has lived in the Village of North Palm Beach, population 13,000, for 20 years.

2. Besides owning a yacht, what are Michael Bozzuto's hobbies?

In addition to being a businessman, Bozzuto is an investor and philanthropist. He is a longtime supporter of the Special Olympics.

He is also an under-the-radar resident who likes to collect houses and yachts, said his lawyer, former Florida Bar president Gregory Coleman.

Bozzuto bought the motor yacht, Honey, about 10 years ago for an undisclosed sum. The Westport mega-yacht was built in 2007 and is the largest of several yachts Bozzuto owns.

Bozzuto also owns four houses in the Village of North Palm Beach. This includes the house at 932 Shore Dr., where he wants to dock Honey. In 2014, Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house, which was built in 1961, according to Palm Beach County property records.

The property is on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Honey.

Bozzuto's residence is in another part of North Palm Beach, on Harbour Isles Court.

3. Michael Bozzuto's net worth isn't known but billionaire owns property outside of North Palm Beach, too

Bozzuto made waves recently when in January he paid $31.1 million for a waterfront house in nearby Palm Beach Shores.

The Singer Island house with two docks stretches into the Intracoastal Waterway just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet. The three-lot parcel on 1.5 acres has about 200 feet of waterfront.

The property was bought from an owner whose family had owned it for decades. It's unclear if Bozzuto will make any changes to the property.

In a brief interview in February, Bozzuto said: “It’s a house, and it will probably be a house."

4. Why can't Bozzuto park his yacht behind his North Palm Beach house?

The Village of North Palm Beach rules say that a private dock or pier can only be used by the occupant of the house. But the village doesn't define the word "occupant."

Bozzuto's lawsuit said while the village has discussed whether to define an occupant as a resident, it never has done so.

Hundreds of other property owners dock a boat behind their North Palm Beach house but do not live there year-round.

Therefore Bozzuto said he's being singled out because neighbors just don't like his boat's big size. This selective enforcement is wrong, his lawsuit said.

Show me the money? Here it is: West Palm and Palm Beach rank in top 5 as cities with fastest growth in millionaires

5. What does North Palm Beach think about the lawsuit?

Unfortunately, this is a mystery until the village responds to Bozzuto's lawsuit in public court records.

The village's longtime lawyer, Lenard Rubin, who knows the municipality's history with boats and houses, did not respond to requests for comment. Neither did the village's manager, Chuck Huff.
