Marley Point on Lake Wellington

Marley Point is one of those family-friendly, laid back, easily accessible spots on the Gippsland Lakes that is well worth a visit. Be it a day trip, camping or just for a swim in Lake Wellington.

Marley Point is best known as the location for the Marley Point overnight Yacht Race.  The Marlay Point Overnight Race has been running on the Gippsland Lakes since 1969. The race is regarded as Australia’s premier race for portable yachts.

Over the years more than 4000 boats and 11,000 sailors have participated in the race. The Marley Point Yacht Race is held every year over the labour day long weekend.

Places to go in Gippsland – Marlay Point

Today at Marley Point you will find the Yacht Club building, a BBQ shed, boat ramp and a free camping site.

The free camping site at Marley Point is right on the banks of Lake Wellington. You can set up your tent, caravan or camper right between some big Cypress trees. This is one of the best places in Gippsland for free camping.

The Cypress trees provide great shelter from the sun in summer and the weather in winter. There are toilet facilities at Marley Point Gippsland. You will find a partially enclosed BBQ area with an open fireplace and bench seat inside.

There is only 1 free electric bbq for use. There are wooden picnic tables spread along the Marley Point foreshore area.

Swimming at Marley Point is excellent for kids and adults alike. The sandy shallow waters of Lake Wellington are calm and safe for everyone. You will find you can walk out into the lake more than 50 meters and the water would not be over your head, that’s how shallow it is.

For fishing, there is a jetty and the sandy banks to fish off. Being a freshwater lake the best baits will be the worm if your chasing bream. A little easier to catch is the European carp. For this fish, you will only need corn or bread on your hook.

You may have to wade out into Lake Wellington a little to cast if you want to catch some of the bigger fish. Fishing at Marley point is one of the easiest things to do in Gippsland with kids.

People head into the middle of the lake, into the Mclennan straights or up into the mouth of the Avon River which drains into Lake Wellington.

How to get to Marley Point: Marley Point is very easy to access once you get to Sale in Gippsland Australia. Follow the A1 Princess Highway through Sale towards to Stratford. 3.4 kilometres out of Sale turn right onto Bengworden Road.

Follow Bengworden road for 11 kilometers before turning right onto Marley Point Road.  Travel 3.6 kilometers and you will arrive on the banks of Lake Wellington at Marley Point. Marley Point is a bit of the Gippsland tourist attractions radar but it’s certainly worth a visit.

Counting down days to Marlay Point Yacht Race

marlay point yacht club

UNLIKE many annual events on the sporting calendar, and with great lateral thinking on the part of the organisers, the Marlay Point Yacht Race has been able to continue unhindered, despite strict COVID regulations over the past couple of years. Both Lake Wellington Yacht Club and Gippsland Lakes Yacht club boast expansive and picturesque grounds, which enabled all aspects of the event to be undertaken in the great outdoors when regulations banned internal gatherings.

This yacht race, organised for 50 years by the Lake Wellington Yacht Club, is now a joint collaboration between Lake Wellington Yacht Club and the Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club, based in Paynesville. It is supported by a number of Gippsland businesses, as well major sponsor, Keeley Marine Supplies.

The overnight race was designed to give sailors with an overnight race experience in the relative safety of sheltered inland waters. As such, it provides an excellent training program for less experienced sailors and is great fun to boot. So much so, that many sailors come back year after year.

With just over a month to go until the 55th Marlay Point Overnight Yacht Race, the organising committee is deep into final preparations for the event, which is held on the Victorian Labour Day weekend in March. This year, there will be no restrictions on social gatherings, which means that sailors will be able to enjoy their hearty breakfast, or a social beverage (but not too many) at the yacht club in Paynesville after they cross the finish line.

The starting gun sounds at sunset just off Marlay Point, and the yachts sail across Lake Wellington, through the McLennan Straight and into Lake Victoria. From there, competitors continue on to Paynesville, with the smaller, slower yachts finishing at the yacht club, while the faster boats continue on their way through the McMillan Straits to circumnavigate Raymond Island, before rounding Montague Point to also finish at the yacht club.

With more than 100 boats expected to enter, the race creates a great spectacle for visitors and residents along the shores of the Gippsland Lakes, especially if the wind is from the west, enabling the yachts to hoist their colourful spinnakers.

Entries are now open through trybooking.com/CENFD

56th Annual Marlay Point Overnight Race

56th annual marlay point overnight race ready to hit the start line.

Photo of YachtBoatNews

The Marlay Point overnight race is an institution for many people. This year it is being held on March 9 and 10. As the race moves into its 56th year in 2024, there are people who have participated every year, and families that have participated as multi-generations. It’s not unusual to hear, “my dad took me” when people are asked when they first sailed in the race.

The marlay point overnight race is open to all mono-hull, multi-hull and sports trailable yachts. participants travel from interstate each year to participate. it is the only overnight race for trailer sailors in australia and is on the must-do bucket list for many..

The race originated with the Lake Wellington Yacht Club and in more recent years has been hosted combined by Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club and Lake Wellington Yacht Club. The race originally began at Marlay Point and traversed the lakes to Metung, but in this century the finishing point has been Paynesville.

Since the race began in 1969, about 4000 yachts have participated, and more than 11,000 sailors have sailed in the Marlay Point overnight race. This year, 100-140 yachts are expected to participate. It is one of the few races that are started using flares, fired into the sky at sunset on Saturday, March 9.

The starting line is at Marlay Point at sunset, and the course takes sailors across broad lakes and through narrow straits, all under the cover of darkness, adding its own challenges and excitement.

For many sailors, especially those with multi-generations of family aboard for 12-24 hours, the race is an ideal bonding experience.

marlay point yacht club

The finish time for each class of yacht is always weather and wind dependent. Boats are expected to begin arriving into Paynesville from dawn on Sunday, March 10. The official finish time is 4pm on Sunday.

As yachts sail past Montague Point and into Paynesville, it is quite a sight. Spinnakers are encouraged, and these sails add to the colour and spectacle of the race. The shore or boat based audience will be able to observe yachts arriving throughout Sunday.

A cooked breakfast will be available at the Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club at Paynesville from 7am. Locals and visitors are all welcome to share a meal with sailors and hear their high tales about sailing the course.

GLYC committee will open the bar from 3pm, with musical entertainment. A presentation evening will be held later in the day.
