The 371-foot long Le Grand Bleu , one of the largest private yachts in the world, arrived in Newport on Tuesday, July 11th.
Le Grand Bleu was built for US telecommunications baron John McCaw and has been owned by Eugene Shvidler, a Russian-American oil businessman, since June 2006. She was built at the Bremer Vulkan yard in Bremen, Germany, and was launched in 2000.
Shvilder owns the Château Thénac vineyard in France, a $37 million home in Belgravia in London, a $14.5 million home in Aspen and has a network of $1.3 billion.
The yacht has a crew of 65 and carries a veritable arsenal of tenders and water toys, both on her aft decks and in her extensive below-deck garage, where there is a large aquarium. Her watercraft includes a 73-foot Dubois-designed sailing yacht, Bellatrix; a 68-foot meter Sunseeker motor yacht; two 11 36-foot, 60-knot Buzzi sports boats; and a landing craft to carry a 4×4 Land Rover used for excursions ashore and a helicopter.
The boat is currently at anchor in Narragansett Bay, just off of Goat Island in front of Belle Mer. It is unknown how long she will be spending in Newport.
Le Grand Bleu is the 24th largest private yacht in the world, according to Wikipedia .
The largest private yacht in the world? That would be Azzam at 591 feet, a yacht that is no stranger to Newport.

Sunset in Newport Harbor
Newport, Rhode Island, renowned as the City-by-the-Sea, is well known for its maritime history and as the stage of past America’s Cup races. Past the magnificent harbor and only a few steps from any of the city’s marinas, visitors will find fabulous mansions, colonial architecture and history, great music, trendy boutiques, and the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Newport is a living historical panorama from the earliest settlers and the American Revolution, to the great mansions built by 19th century industrialists. There is drama on every step of the Cliff Walk and turn of Ocean Drive and spectacular beauty found in the beaches and harbor, making Newport for yacht charter, an excellent port to visit. Yacht charter in Newport, RI is a major activity today with charter yachts lining the docks in the various marinas circling the harbor.
Trinity Church, Newport, RI
Colonial Newport is clustered around the main harbor, historically one of the deepest water harbors on the east coast of the United States, making Newport a valuable location for the clipper ship triangular trade with the Caribbean. Deep-keeled clipper ships could sail right up to the wharf in Colonial Newport, unload into a warehouse, with the Custom’s Office just footsteps away. Unlike New York City, Boston, and even London where goods and people had to be rowed back and forth from the ship out on anchor, the ease of trade given Newport’s deep water soon made Colonial Newport a burgeoning and wealthy city in the 1700’s, and one of the most important ports in Colonial America. The British blockaded Newport at the beginning of the Revolutionary War, bringing Newport to a standstill for decades. Today, with Newport stopped in time in the Colonial time period, there are more Colonial buildings in Newport than in any other location in the United States.
Bowen’s Wharf in Newport, RI
With a varied history that included pirates, and rum running, the most astonishing period, and that which brought slumbering Newport back to the nation’s attention, was The Gilded Age. Newport became the preferred location to summer for many of the old and newly wealthy in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. It was the thermal winds that blow across the island, lowering the summer temperatures and removing any humidity that had this class flocking to the area before the advent of air conditioning or even electric fans. Great mansions, cunningly referred to as “Summer Cottages” sprouted up along the top of the ridge overlooking the harbor, and along the southern coast, but most particularly along a new development on either side of Bellevue Avenue. These Gilded Age Mansions were built to showcase an opulent lifestyle, which only lasted in Newport for the two summer months of July and August. However, during that time, there were balls, parties, picnics and other extravagant entertainments every day, while carriages rolled up an down Bellevue Avenue each afternoon for the very important event of establishing social precedence by calling or not calling on one another.
The White Horse Tavern
The advent of income taxation and the American Depression brought The Gilded Age to a halt, causing Newport to slumber once again. But the landscape was stamped forever by the opulent mansions and estates built by those with unfettered wealth. Newport today has gained prominence from the same thermal winds that brought the wealthy to Newport and, with them, their yachts during The Gilded Age, as the Sailing Capital of America, and home in recent decades to the America’s Cup Races. Today, Newport is a center for New England yacht charter, and sailing is a very prominent activity. Newport, RI yacht charter often starts or ends in the deep water harbor, where today yachting reigns supreme.
What to Do and See in Newport, Rhode Island
America’s Firsts: Newport, as one of the first towns established in America, is the birth place of The Redwood Library, America’s oldest library, Touro Synagogue, America’s oldest synagogue, The Old Quaker Meeting House, the oldest Quaker house of worship, The Colony House, the oldest State House still standing, and the White Horse Tavern, claimed to be the oldest continually run tavern in the United States.
Touro Synagogue Newport, Rhode Island
Colonial Newport: Wander off the beaten path and stroll some of the quieter streets on Historic Hill and the Point. Your eyes will be opened to a side of Newport that you never knew existed; a once busy colonial harbor town larger than either New York City or Boston, shut down, and locked in time by a British blockade during the Revolutionary War.
Hunter House
No other city in America has more restored colonial-era homes and buildings; almost 200, all protected by the National Register of Historic Landmarks. Several of the more important Colonial Homes are open for tours, such as the Hunter House on Washington Street situated on Newport Harbor as the home of and built by a wealthy sea captain.
Brick Market Museum of Newport History: An architectural treasure, The Brick Market Building, designed by Peter Harrison, was constructed in 1762. Originally it housed an open-air market below with offices on the upper floors including the Custom’s Office, ideally located right beside the docks where goods were offloaded from the mighty clipper ships that sailed into Newport and right up to the docks, given that Newport was a deep water port. Today on the first floor is a museum gift shop with unique gifts, while a museum of Newport history is housed on the upper floors with interactive audio and video exhibits.
“Summer Cottages”: Within blocks of the historic colonial districts are the fabulous mansions of the 19th century wealthy, lined up along Bellevue Avenue. These paragons chose Newport as their place to “summer” in grandiose “cottages”, built as a statement of personal achievement and wealth due to the salubrious cooling winds that cross the island in the summer.
The Breakers, Ocean Drive
Enjoy guided tours of many grand mansions and learn much about the lifestyles, tastes and diversions of those that called Newport home during the various centuries of city existence. Each guided tour is unforgettable, highlighting the real-life of real people whose names are part of American legend: Commodore Perry, Vanderbilt, Doris Duke, and John F and Jackie Kennedy. There are also guided tours of the lives of those not so famous; showcasing the Downstairs existence of the Upstairs-Downstairs world of a 19th century upscale mansion.
Newport Harbor: Ashore around the harbor on the various wharves that once were docks for clipper ships coming in from the Caribbean with wares, are chic shops, boutiques and many restaurants and watering holes. Perhaps enjoy a fresh cooked lobster or a clam boil, complete with lobster bib, both of which are New England favorites.
Cliff Walk: Take a walk along the Cliff Walk, which borders the “backyards” of so many of the Newport Gilded Age summer “cottages” and the Atlantic Ocean. This is a lovely walk along the Atlantic Ocean, with the same view as those that lived once in these lavish mansions.
International Tennis Hall of Fame-Photo Credit Missy Johnston
Tennis Hall of Fame: If you are a tennis enthusiast, on Bellevue Avenue is the International Tennis Hall of Fame, complete with original grass tennis courts. With advance reservations, you too could play tennis on one of the original grass tennis courts.
Yachting Museum: Any yachting enthusiast may enjoy the Yachting Museum on Lower Thames Street within the International Yacht Restoration School, which also has displays and information on yacht restoration, including an active exhibit of the restoration of the schooner “Coronet”, a wooden-hull schooner built in 1885, and one of the oldest and largest schooner yachts in the world. While inside the Yachting Museum are exhibits about Newport’s international role in Yachting History.
Ocean Drive, Newport, RI
Ocean Drive: Enjoyed as much for the beautiful seascapes of the Atlantic Ocean stretching to England as for landscape of massive mansions and homes, this drive will find you moving from Newport Harbor, around the headland of Newport on the Atlantic Ocean, past Beach Clubs for both the upper and lower classes, and onto Bellevue Avenue, with blocks of large mansions running down either side.
Sunset in the Newport Harbor
At night, the docks, and streets along the harbor come alive with any number of establishments open for fun and frivolity, both outdoors and indoors. Newport is not just a boarding location from which to start your southern New England yacht charter, but is a historic port of call offering a tremendous amount to see and do, before, during or after a luxury yacht charter.

SPEAK TO A SALES PROFESSIONAL
Nestled on the southern New England coast between Connecticut (west) and Massachusetts (north and east), Rhode Island also shares a small maritime border with Long Island, NY. Block Island, Block Island and Rhode Island Sounds, and the Atlantic Ocean are south. Though it is the smallest state by land area, Rhode Island is the second most densely populated state after New Jersey! Rhode Island, with its 400 miles of coastline, large bays, and inlets that comprise 14% of the state’s total area, is known for beautiful sandy beaches and historic seaside towns. Newport is a famed sailing center and its “Gilded Age” mansions that line the seashore, such as The Breakers, are a major tourist attraction. The world-class annual Newport International Boat Show kicks off the Boat Show season in September.
Rhode Island got its name from early explorers who sailed near Aquidneck Island, the largest island in Narragansett Bay and may have seen red fall foliage and/or red clay shoreline bluffs, giving the island a reddish appearance (rhode), though most of the state’s land area is actually part of the mainland. Narragansett Bay is Rhode Island’s primary topographical feature with over 30 islands within the bay. Aquidneck Island, the largest, consists of Portsmouth (north), Middletown, and Newport (south). Second largest island is Conanicut and third largest is Prudence Island. Block Island lies about 12-13 miles off the mainland coast and is separated from the mainland by a 10-mile-wide strait called Block Island Sound in the Atlantic Ocean. Block Island Sound extends east to Montauk Point of Long Island along with Plum Island, Gardiners Island, and Fishers Island, all part of New York State and to the Rhode Island Sound. To west the strait extends to Long Island Sound, all major waterways for recreational cruising vessels and commercial boat traffic.
Rhode Island’s first English settlement was Providence on land granted by the Narragansett people to Roger Williams in 1636, who was fleeing religious persecution. Other people who were political or religious dissidents or social outcasts fled to the area and settled Aquidneck Island, founding Portsmouth in northern part and Newport in the south. Samuel Gorton bought land from the Narragansetts in 1642 and obtained a separate charter from the crown in 1648 for the settlement he named Warwick. Roger Williams and other settlements consolidated to apply for colony status from the English crown (Charles I) as “Providence Plantations (Colony)” from 1643 to 1663, when a new charter was issued. Providence Plantations was the first colony to call for a Continental Congress in 1774 and renounce allegiance to British rule in 1776. In 1790, after the American Revolution, the new state became known as State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations and the name remained until 2020 when voters finally dropped the latter part. Rhode Island was the last of the 13 original colonies to ratify the U.S. Constitution, only after being assured that a Bill of Rights would become part of the Constitution.
The capital and most populated city is Providence, and the location of ivy league Brown University, founded in 1764, one of nine colleges granted charters before the American Revolution and the first to accept students regardless of their religious affiliation, in character with Rhode Island’s first settlers. The city’s green is now named Roger Williams Park, after the founder. Providence features the landscaped Waterplace Park and Riverwalk with the famed WaterFire art installation, a 1994 sculpture by Barnaby Evans presented on the rivers of downtown Providence. The sculpture consists of 86 burning braziers; some float just above the rivers’ surface as they flow through Waterplace Park and center of downtown Providence. Originally created in celebration of the “First Night Providence” New Year’s Eve music and performing arts festival’s 10th anniversary, it has now become an annual public art attraction.
Rhode Island had a primary role in the Industrial Revolution in New England in 1787 with the advent of cotton mills powered by flowing river water. Moses Brown of Providence and partner Samuel Slater built the first water-powered cotton mill in America, on one of the many rivers in Rhode Island. Moses Brown and brother Nicholas co-founded the college that became Brown University. Many of Rhode Island’s major metro centers today derive from industrial development along the Blackstone, Seekonk, and Providence Rivers where water-powered textile mills were built.
The fifty years following the Civil War were a time of great prosperity and affluence for Rhode Island as it became the center of the “Gilded Age” when many of the country’s most prominent and wealthiest industrialists built grand residential mansions or summer “cottages” on Rhode Island’s beautiful shores. Newport became the summer haven for New York’s uber-wealthy to build opulent estates and found private membership sports clubs for recreation and socializing. The Newport Casino, built in 1879 to 1881 by New York Herald publisher, James Gordon Bennett, Jr was the focus of “Gilded Age” social life through the 1920s for a variety of outdoor and indoor recreational activities, including lawn tennis. The first American Lawn Tennis championships were held on the Newport Casino courts. The shingle style building was designed by noted “Gilded Age” architectural firm, McKim, Mead & White. Newport Casino was designated a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1987 and listed on the National Register of Historical Places (NRHP) in 1970. It now houses the International Hall of Fame and features an active grass-court tennis club.
Some of the most notable historic mansions in Newport were designed by McKim, Mead & White, such as “Rosecliff,” built 1898-1902 for socialite Theresa Fair Oelrichs (silver heiress from Nevada) who commissioned the design of a summer home for entertaining on a “grand scale.” The Providence capitol building, Rhode Island State House, was also designed by McKim, Mead & White and features the fourth largest structural stone dome in the world. Another prominent architect of that era, Richard Morris Hunt, designed the Vanderbilt family’s 5-story, 70-room mansion “The Breakers” in the Beaux-Arts Renaissance Revival style, and designed Alva & William Kissam Vanderbilt’s summer cottage “Marble House” in the Beaux-Arts style of peerless opulence when completed in 1892. The mansion’s interior was used for several films (The Great Gatsby in 1974, 27 Dresses in 2008), a TV Series (America 1972-73), and a Victoria’s Secret holiday commercial in 2012. Today it is a museum run by the Newport Preservation Society. “Belcourt” was another “summer cottage” mansion designed by Richard Morris Hunt for Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont, son of August Belmont, Sr. for whom the Belmont Stakes were named. Oliver loved horses and the “castle” as it came to be known, had extensive stables and carriage areas that were part of the main house. The estate is currently owned by Harle Tinny and is the only mansion in Newport that is open to the public as a museum of antiquities and architectural & social history with a private owner in residence. Block Island was discovered in 1614 by Dutch explorer Adrian Block, who named it for himself. The island, just 13 miles from the Rhode Island coast, was settled in 1661 and incorporated in 1672 as New Shoreham. For nearly 200 years it remained a fisherman’s outpost, until the mid-1800s when steamboat passage opened up the island to visitors from the mainland for summer island getaways and sprawling Victorian beachside hotels were built to accommodate them. Tourism replaced fishing as the dominant economy. Two historical lighthouses, North Light, built in1867 of brownstone and the red-brick Southeast Lighthouse, built in 1800s, stands atop dramatic cliffs of Mohegan Bluffs overlooking rocky beaches below. Crescent Beach is a popular sandy beach on the east coast for summer visitors arriving by ferry or boat. Actor Christopher Walken has a summer home on Block Island.
Historic, summer resort town, Newport “City-By-The-Sea” on the south end of Aquidneck Island, was the site of the first US Open Tournaments in both tennis and golf, and every challenge to the annual sailing regatta, America’s Cup, for over 50 years (1930-1983) in Newport Harbor. Newport is considered the “birthplace of tennis” and “America’s First Resort” with stunning views of Newport Harbor, Narragansett Bay, and Newport Bridge. Named by major travel magazines as one of the top destinations in the country for its famed seaside mansions and other beautiful historic architecture, galleries, restaurants, shopping, and the many other activities, events and attractions enjoyed by visitors from all around the world.
The historic waterfront shopping district includes the lower Thames Street and America’s Cup Avenue that run parallel to the waterfront, the Brick Market Place with its picturesque wharves reminiscent of Newport’s seafaring days, Long Wharf Mall, Bowen’s Wharf, Washington Square, and Bannister’s Wharf & Marina with Clarke Cooke House Restaurant as its focal point. The entire area is lively with eclectic dining, boutique shops, and nightlife. Bowen’s Wharf with deep water dockage for yachts to 185ft LOA is located in the center of Newport’s waterfront and features boating, dining, cocktails, shopping, events, tours & attractions, and nightlife.
The Newport International Boat Show (NIBS) is one of the largest and most prestigious in the nation spanning 13 acres and attracting more than 40,000 visitors annually in September to Newport’s famed downtown waterfront. In-water exhibits of the newest offerings of Powerboat and Sailboat models plus Charters, Marine Equipment, Services and Accessories surrounded by gorgeous fall foliage scenery, national historic sites and museums, world-class restaurants and shopping, and exciting nightlife make Newport International Boat Show the ideal kick-off to the U.S. Boat Show season.
With over 30 islands to explore in Narragansett Bay along with the many seaside towns and harbors along its 400 miles of coastline, Rhode Island is a wonderful boaters’ destination. There are numerous marinas and marine facilities along the waterways that offer very basic services to a full array of amenities, such as power and water hook-ups, restrooms, showers, pump-out, wifi, floating docks, ice, laundry facilities, security, dinghy docks, fuel dock, ships store, captains lounge, onsite restaurant/bar, BBQ grills, picnic area, swimming pool, maintenance facilities, oil recycling, travel lift, and more.
