Matthias Gibson was born into a family with deep ties to the seafaring industry, including his great grandfather being a former deep sea fisherman and his father looking for any opportunity he could find to sail. It only seemed natural that Matt would grow up inspired by these experiences, eventually pursuing boat design as an academic program at Massey University. After seventeen years of design experience – from high-speed planing craft to super yachts and more – Matt took it upon himself on embarking on this mission professionally; founding Build Boats alongside many successes along the way.

TECT RESCUE

TECT Rescue is a 14.8m search and rescue catamaran constructed for Tauranga Volunteer Coastguard Association Incorporated.  The state-of-the-art craft is equipped with enhanced capabilities for sea rescues, and is larger and swifter than their current vessel.  This is the first vessel constructed for this client.

Mahina is an 18.6m high-speed catamaran constructed as a pleasure craft for a private client.  The vessel has a high-end finish both internally and externally.  This is the first vessel constructed for this client.

TE KAIHŌPARA

Te Kaihōpara was constructed for The University of Auckland.  The primary role of the craft is for research, survey and educational missions, led by the University of Auckland’s Institute of Marine Science, based in Leigh. This is the first vessel constructed for this client.

Building on their obvious satisfaction with the success of their last acquisition from Q-West, Victoria’s Water Police have come back for another. Same designer, same yard.

January 26 2018 was International Customs Day, and was considered a suitable day for Q-West Boat Builders to officially handover to New Zealand Customs Service their newest vessel the 18.6 metre Teknicraft-designed Hawk V.

Q-West has delivered another prime Teknicraft-designed, Scania driven, Hamilton Jet-powered patrol vessel.

Circa Marine and Industrial Ltd specialise in the quality fabrication of explorer and passage-makers yachts , catamarans , fishing boats , workboats , ferries, barges and launches. We also provide quality aluminium and steel fabrication covering the marine, industrial and general engineering sectors. Our Philosophy

Makaira Boats is a family run business that builds industry leading aluminium sport fishing boats. We are the only company to offer a lifetime warranty on hulls, because quality is at the forefront of everything we do.

Humble Beginnings

Makaira Boats was started when owner Allan Shaw was completing his time as Marine System Engineer at Alloy Yachts, New Zealand premier superyacht builder. Allan recognised a gap in the market for offshore trailer boat’s that had long range capabilities and sound sea keeping. Allan saw a clear lack of build standards in the aluminium trailer boat building industry world wide as well as a lack of performance.

After completing his time at Alloy Yachts in 2011 Allan started drafting his ideal boat and put the wheels in motion to build hull no.1 – a King Bank 940 Called “The Game” which gained a lot of traction for the brand and was the base point for the company.

Growth & International Demand

Since then the company has steadily grown to where it is today having a purpose built factory with 9 boat build capacity and further expansion underway that will see the company into a new production line with triple the capacity.

Makaira is growing exponentially, with demand consistently outpacing capacity. We have built a strong following not only in New Zealand but also internationally in Australia and the U.S.A that recognizes the quality and performance of our boats. Alot of our boats are sold internationally and can be shipped anywhere in the world.

Armed police swarm Auckland building after ‘photographic equipment’ mistaken for gun

Armed police swarmed an Auckland apartment building after a witness mistook photographic equipment for a gun.

Witnesses saw about a dozen officers, some armed, enter the Goodview Apartment Hotel in Hobson St shortly before 10am Saturday.

Police arrested three people at the scene, but only one is staying in custody.

“No firearm was located and police believe that in this instance a long piece of photographic equipment was mistaken for a firearm by an observer,” a spokesman said.

The exact nature of the long item the witness saw remained unclear, a spokesman said.

A Herald photographer at the scene saw a man in a basketball jersey being taken away by police. The spokesman said one man was arrested over an outstanding warrant while two others were released without charge.
