Catalina Capri 26
- Add to quote
Hello there, I am a new Capri 26 Owner, just looking to exchange ideas with other Capri 26 owners out there. Look forward to hearing from anyone that currently or previously owned a Capri 26. I have a 1992 Hull#246, Complete with Heated water system Sailing on Lake Mead Nv, winds can go from 0kts to 30kts at any moment. The wind often swirls, and changes directions. Its a crazy lake to sail. Ill be sailing this boat until I retire (11 more years?) then I plan on upgrading and moving away to a coastal paradise. In the process of changing sails out, the boat still has the original 1992 main which is blown out pretty bad,. Changing to a loose foot, tri-radial design. Also currently using the 135% genoa that came with the boat, but I am considering getting a 145%. Does any one think a 155% would be too much for this boat? Im getting mixed info from some folks....some think its too much sail for the boat, others think its ok. (i have a roller furler). Anyone have any sailing tips for this very beamy boat?
Sails The boat sails well with a 155%. I currently own my second Capri 26. The last one had a 155% Rf North headsail and was great but you have to reef earlier. My new boat has lots of hanked on sails, but if the wind is light I use the 155%, if it is windy, I use a 110.
Thanks very much for your input
Capri 26 A month ago I too acquired a 1992 C26 hull #206. Very clean boat with 120 hours on the M12 diesel. I am very fussy, and all has to be perfect. I did a lot of research. I was suprised to see the boat being equiped with Patay cockpit pump. I got in touch with Patay in the UK and had them send me service kit for the pump. I have been battling wiht a number of issues mainly water leaks. The Beckson ports on the galley and head are problematic, they do not have the rain drain, thus water tends to accumulate in the spigot which eventually leaks in. I have rebedded both and ordered new gaskets and screens. Let's see whether they will stop leaking other wise I will repalce them with Bomar 2000 series ports. I also rebedded the Bomar hatch, have to change the mushroom caps as well. Also there has been water accumulation in the floor of the hanging closet. I think the issue there is that the exhaust fitting is lose and when the engine is running the is some water in take. I will wait till the boat comes out of the water and then I will address it. I have had enough with the leaks, unforutnatly I have found an added leak, from the mast plate. Perhaps the electical connections are not caulked water was accumulating at the base of the mast post. I hope to address this as well. I love the boat however a bit disappointed at the workmanship. I was not impressed to see the head being held with 2 inch screws. With the leaky ports in the head, the floor got soaked and the screws are no longer firm. I had the head bolted to the floor with plates holding underneath. I had to rebed the Bomar hatch as well. The boat came with a CDI furling unit, I will see how it is and I might repalce it next year. i also need a bimini and a winter cover. My previous boat I had a Jeanneau. Best Jim
Capri 26 "rounding up in gusts" issue I know this thread is old, but I was looking to find out more about the capri 26 round up problem, my boat will occasionally round up in gusts and i have heard that this has been an issue with all capri 26 boats. Does anyone have any info on this ( what causes it?) Other than my crappy sailing skills. I also heard that Catalina has issued and engineering release on this issue but I havent found it yet. Thanks!
I've noted the same problem and have assumed it was natural weather-helm when she is overpowered. Which brings me to an additional question (if I may be a usurper)-- can anyone comment on what is the best way to depower when racing on a windy day-- reef the main or partially roller-furl the headsail? Would your recommendations change if you were racing versus cruising? Diverboy-- I'm new to Sailnet and would like to compare notes on the Capri 26 with you (I've just read your old posts.)
Hello there and thanks for the reply to my post about the capri 26 I would love to compare notes with you. I have a ton of pics and a few videos as well, just you tube Catalina Capri 26 My boat should pop up. You can reach my personal e-mail from there. Its a great boat, but there is definatley an issue with the rounding up. I have not received a reply from catalina yet reference this I will probably just call them next week. I have had a number of more skilled sailors than I take her out, and the issue is still there. I have discovered how to avoid it ( not pointing as high) and reefing much sooner than you would expect. This seems to help considerably but, it definatley affects your sailing as you have to veer off the wind more than should be needed, as you know this creates more distance from point A to point B, making staying competitive in a race difficult. Also the boat seems slow on the start but once i find that sweet spot she normally pulls ahead of other boats with similar PHRF ratings, ( mine is about 215-220) due to the inboard with Fixed prop. Looking forward to hearing from you! Russ

I've seen a Capri 26 for sale. Can anyone tell me the headroom, I'm 6' 2" and looking for a boat that I can fit inside and also clear the boom. Thanks Jim
Late reply... I'm 6'1" and can stand upright only under the hatch (while closed). But the boat is quite comfortable... Sitting headroom is fine, and stretch out room on the bunks is ok. Check my web page for more info... Temptress Page
Just put my Capri 26 in this weekend. The boat was sitting still for about 12 years with sails on. I am looking for a set of sails to get me by till I can get new ones. Also dose anyone have recommendation where to go for sails. Ken [email protected]
Do you still own your Capri 26/ Are you still sailing Lake Mead? I am looking for a Capri 26. My cell is 775 690 7671
5 yo thread? 6 posts by the OP? might just get crickets.
Hello, Would anyone know where to get the veneer strips that are imbedded in teak. (Wood cover over bilge) Thanks, Chris
Im looking for a Capri 26 for sale in the Northeast US if anyone is considering selling next year...
New owner of 1993 hull 266, looking forward to sailing in Eastern NC
Darryl are you giving up on your Oday 26? I am just assuming you are the same Darryl I have sailed with. The Capri 26 isn't exactly a quick boat, last I heard you were looking at an S2 7.9, very different boats. If speed is what you are after, in roughly that size range, I'd consider the S2 7.9, the Laser 28 (good luck finding one), the Tripp 26, or the Capri 25. The Tripp and Capri 25 are pretty good in light air, the S2 and Laser are good all around performers. The Capri 25 in my opinion is a PHRF killer in the very light stuff. Since you guys use Portsmouth, I will say that the rating is a gift in Portsmouth. The boat does stop dead in chop (there are steering techniques that help it, but it is a wide short waterline boat, so it just stops easily, just be prepared for motorboat wakes to be frustrating in the light stuff). As you can imagine the S2 would be a challenge to sail against those who have sailed them for 20ish years. In my opinion though with crew you could be competitive. Knowing how well you sail, you could easily give them a run for their money. You know how to get a hold of me if you want some ideas. PS: To get the right boat it might be a bit of a road trip, but I have my eye on a few. I can give you a line on a boat (not mentioned above) that might be a wild off the wall choice if you are interested. Its 26 feet long if the guy still has it for sale it'd be a hoot.

Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Ahoy all. I'm new to this site, just stumbling upon it.I'm currently saililng a Cat 22 with the hopes of finding a Capri 26 to step up into. I can find few for sale on the various e sites. Even on this board, I see very little reference to the 26 in the archives.Does anyone know why that might be? They are currently (temporily?) out of production, but I understand they were built for at least 10 years. Yet, someone else told me that only 350 or so were made. Does that sound right. If anyone has any insights on the boat (reviews, where to seek additional info, or whatever), I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks,Brad
capri 26 Brad,I have also considered the Capri 26. you can find more information on the capri 26 website. i don't have the address but it is linked off the catalina company web site. I've asked several people about the boat while i've been looking over the past 2 years. responses have been mixed as to the boat. it seems that it fits into a niche that isn't there anymore. right between a 25 and a 27. I personally like it, the extra beam seems to really open up the interior and the phrf rating is good. it came in inboard and outboard, fin and wing keel. one disadvantage that was specifically mentioned to me was the distance of the outboard from the cockpit, due to the reverse slope of the transom. someone said you had to lean over the back so far while motoring that you couldn't see where you were going. I don't have first hand knowledge though. the main disadvantage i believe was the cost of a new one.. about 50k near the end of production. too far above the c250/h260 and not far below the c270. it appears to me that the used prices make it a bargain, because a good one can be had for 20-30k (inboard), or 16-22k (outboard) Let me know if you get one, i'd love to know how you like it.nate
Nate, thanks for the response A friend (now moved away) had one -- never complained and I never noticed a problem with the OB and big transom. It's a good observation however. They aren't currently manufacturilng the 26 so when I checked Catalina's site, it isn't there. I understand that the 26's will be back in 2002 -- all with wheel steering. Don't know how good my source is.I'll certainly let you know if I find the boat. But you say you've been looking for a couple of years? Are they really scarce, are you very selective? Also, I've been searching the biggies like yachtworld and boattraderonline, plus some smaller ones like sailnet and boatnet. Got any great sites that I'm missing. Thanks,Brad
capri 26 Brad, try www.soundingsonline.com/, www.fwboats.com/www.ablboats.com/www,zboat,com/www.internetboats.com/www.boatsbuyorsell.com/to answer your question about why i haven't found a boat in 2 years.. selective is a good synonym...for tight!!!! I'm new to this sailing thing, although i've wanted to for many years. about 9 months into my search for a boat i was asked to be a partner in a catalina 25 with an older gentleman that was having difficulty maintaining his boat. so i have been doing that for awhile now. I am, as a result, not in dire need of a boat. I have learned, however that a catalina 25 isn't what i need. i have an older son that lives with us, and he is with us most of the time. so i need a boat that has more sleeping room available than the c-25.right after i made the deal on the c-25 i found a great deal on a capri 26 outboard with a wheel, but the insides were almost black with mildew... needed a lot of attention and cleaning up, no trailer but it could have been had for 16k. i really wanted to jump on it, but the wife and the finances said no.I am still looking, and if i find a great deal i may buy something and get out of the deal on the 25. i guess right now i have the best of both worlds, a good boat, almost no cost, and the time to find something better if i want.enough of my life story, i know of a capri 26 diesel for sale in minnesota, i know its a long way from you, but it supposedly has a new trailer.. i think it's a tiller, a 90 model ibelieve. he'll sell it for about 18k if he hasn't sold it yet. his asking price is 20k. send me your email and i'll send you the info on the boat and the contact name and number. it's pretty well equipped with a spinaker, 110, 135 and 150 on a roller, i believe. the photos look good.i'd give you the info now, but i'll have to find it again. i can't remember which site it's on.nate jackson
26 Brad,I found his email. it's [email protected]let me know if you can make a deal.nate jackson
Capri 26 spotted..... ...in Mission Bay, 2 at Fast Lane Sailing Center. Call information for 619 area code to get number. Both are in good shape on trailers. The older, less expensive one has a lot of racing upgrades. I think it is a very cool boat.
Nate & Joe -- thanx for your help I'm sorry, I can't figure out the mechanics of a response so I'm posting the only way l know.Nate -- I think I know the boat of which you speak. I talked to a guy -- he advertises on a couple of sites. I gotta have a wing keel -- his a fin. If that's not the one, tell me fast! He is in Menominee, MI. Again, his is a fin...said that he could have sold it a month ago if it were a wing. But I gotta have the wing -- the trailer is a real plus. If it's somebody else, let me know.Joe -- I'm going to call San Diego and check these out. I'll let you know.Be gone (sailing over the long weekend in WY -- I live in CO). Again, thank you both.
c26 brad, its the same one.. sorrynate

capri 26 Maine This has been a great discusion about the Capri 26. I've been looking at the Catalina 25, but the Capri 26 seems to be a sturdier boat. They are a bit rarer out here on the east coast. I've got a line on 1993 with an inboard diesel for $26,500 in Maine. Any advise on this price. The boat is being marketed as in great shape, but I haven't seen it yet. Also, any problem points I should have the surveyor pay close attention to. Thanks for the advise.Mike
capri 26... mike Mike, unless you specifically want a 93 model i'd look for another.. sounds a little high unless it is really loaded.. check out the NADA site and the BUC site for price information.. i think you'll find another for much less.. for about 5k more you can buy a 94 or 95 270 LE down the coast in savannaNate
capri 26... mike Sorry, forgot to answer part 2. I don't know of any specifics to have a surveyor check.. but i'd sure want to know the engine was in great shape.. also, you might make a ridiculous offer and see if you get the boat. most of these capri 26 boats stay on the market quite awhile.. i'm sure the seller is aware of that fact. i've been told that an offer of 2/3 of the asking price, or less, often gets the boat (regardless of brand)nate
Many thanks Nate, many thanks. You're probably right about looking at a 270. The Capri 26 may be to much of an orphan boat. If you make it up the coast, stop in Scituate Harbor.Mike
Mike, I don't know of any particular concerns but just a couple of thoughts.I think the 26 is a great looking and sailing boat. It is pretty beamy (9'10") which makes it difficult to trailer w/o a permit. A friend described it as the "smallest boat that you can't trailer" -- he was against it and said to get a 27 or 28. I'm not entirely sure that I subscribe to his thought process .... yet.I can find almost no boats with trailers and haven't found one wing keel available with trailer (although I havel run across one or two on the various webb sites, but calling on them, I found that they were sold -- like a year ago). This may or may not be of any concern to you. But....I did call TrailRite, the folks who make trailers for Catalina/Capri. They suggested that a new trailer would run me around $5,100.I find the Capri 26's just a little pricey as compared to the Blue Book values listed. Example: a '93 diesel is listed for either $17,850.....$22,900....or $25,900 (giving the three general conditions of Below Average, Average, or Above Average condition). Sounds like the boat you are looking at isn't that far off the mark if it is indeed "above average" -- whatever that means.Good luck.Brad
Joe, I called the Fast Lane folks. Talked to a gal who answered the phone. At first she didn't recall any Capri 26's at all. I told her that I just received a "sighting report" and she suggested that they had one a couple of weeks ago, but that it was gone.Thanx anyway. Sorry for being so long in my reply....took a 5-day sailing trip, sure wish it could have been in a bigger boat.Brad
I've got one! Brad,I have a beautiful 92 model that is for sale. It is listed on the bucnet....It has an outboard, wheel steering, and I've added teak cabinets to the main salon. I've loved this boat. It sails great, has lots of room and has been very little trouble in any way. We're getting into cruising that is more extended and looking to move up a little, but this is a GREAT weekender.Good luck
ken fulton ken,how much are you asking?? do you have photos you can email to me??[email protected]thanks, nate jackson
Capri 26 I bought a '94 Capri 26 with trailer last Sept. for $23K the boat had 90hours on the inboard Diesel. It has been a great boat and I look forward to many more years of sailing it.Good luck with your search.

| In 1990 Catalina Yachts started building the Capri 26 and continued into 1997 with over 300 built. It was designed to be a performance family boat. A beamy cabin with lots of head room, walk through transom and nimble performance on the race course and while cruising. You could have either an inboard diesel engine or a stern mounted bracket for an outboard engine. Keel choices of a fin or shoal wing keel. The Capri 26 is an incredibly stable ride and a joy to sail. |
