Moonshadow narrowboat with honesty bar, Manchester
Right in the city centre of Manchester sits Moonshadow, a stylish houseboat complete with a pretty pink honesty bar loaded with wine, beer, spirits, and games.
It’s also pet-friendly so you can bring along your cat or dog to enjoy the entire boat, which has a double bed and a single sleeper sofa.
There’s wifi, central heating, and a kitchen equipped for cooking, plus some breakfast items provided.

Velvet Morning canal boat, Richmond, London
A 100-year-old, 57ft long canal boat that can sleep four adults and one child, in the heart of London.
There’s a king-size master bed, a bunk for a child, and a seating area that can convert into another bed, if you’re heading aboard as a group.
Make sure you check out that freestanding tub.
Lady Florence river boat, Kent
This boat is a bit Tardis-like. It might look small from that exterior shot, but inside you’ll find space to rival your average rented flat.
There are two bedrooms, a sitting room, a kitchen, a bathroom, and two terraces, all with wifi and smart TVs.
Lady Florence sits right on the River Medway in Maidstone, with great views of Allington Castle. Lovely stuff.
The Ark houseboat, Bishopthorpe
Here’s one for your next group holiday: The Ark can sleep up to ten people, with five beds to choose from.
It’s pretty hefty, and each bedroom has its own flatscreen TV. Fancy.
Location-wise, you’re a 10 to 15 minute drive from York city centre, or you can find some cute pubs, shops, and restaurants a five-minute walk away.
Canal boat, London
Whether you’re a tourist or a Londoner who just fancies trying out houseboat living for the night, this is a solid option.
The boat is moored on Regent’s Canal, easily reached from Angel, and has a comfy living room and cabinette with a memory foam mattress on the bed.
There’s even a desk, so you can work-from-boat.
Narrowboat with indoor fireplace, East Dunbartonshire Council, Scotland
Fire up the BBQ at the water’s edge, then enjoy your dinner on the roof.
Or, if it’s a bit chilly, snuggle up inside the 30ft long boat by the Victorian wood burner.
There’s a smart TV and board games to keep you entertained.
Sweet cottage-style furnishings, a smart TV, a walk-in wet room with a shower and toilet, and a full kitchen, all on the water – what more could you want?
The River Thames Apartment, Oxfordshire
A floating apartment that sits on the River Thames near Oxford, surrounded by gorgeous countryside.
After a brisk walk out in nature, return to the boat for a nice hot shower and a lounge in the living room, enjoying the views of the water.
Mandy Sue, London
One for history buffs. Mandy Sue is a 1939 naval pinnace – a style of boat used in the war to take cargo (think ammunition and food) from ship to shore for the Navy.
Now, it’s been transformed into a gorgeous two-bedroom boat, with a bathroom, kitchen, living area, and a table on the top deck for open-air dining.
Hamble River Beds, Burlesdon
Sitting on the gorgeous River Hamble is a floating lodge made of recycled materials.
It’s pretty luxurious, with underfloor heating for added cosiness, two TVs, and a cupboard stocked with games.
42ft long by 12ft wide, this option can accommodate two adults and two children, thanks to a double bedroom and a bunk room.
River Thames houseboat, Hampton Wick
A cosy couple’s getaway, sat on the River Thames near Kingston Bridge.
If you get bored aboard the boat, it’s only an eight minute walk along the river to get to Kingston Town, where you’ll find plenty of bars and restaurants.
Or, you can get the train into central London in 35 minutes. Easy.
Jessie the narrowboat, Little Venice, London
We’re big fans of Jessie, a 57ft long, 6ft 10ins wide narrowboat moored in Little Venice.
Despite being just a stone’s through from Paddington station, a stay in the boat feels like a real getaway from the city, with a cute little deck to sit and watch the world go by.
Inside there’s a double cabin with two single bunk beds plus a sofa that flattens out into a double bed. There’s a bathroom with a shower and toilet, a living area with a fuel stove and wall-mounted TV, and a galley with gas hob and oven.

Spend The Night On A London Houseboat
This is a sponsored article on behalf of Airbnb .
Imagine falling asleep, rocked by the movement of the water beneath your berth. Feeling seasick? Then these are not for you. But if the novelty of staying the night on London's river and canals floats your boat, check out these waterborne homes available on Airbnb .
Chelsea houseboat This houseboat, moored on pretty Cheyne Walk at Chelsea Embankment is light and spacious, sleeping up to five people. The French doors lead to the outdoor deck, where you can watch the world go past on the river. Reviews say "delightful" and "immaculately clean and comfortable". You don't get many opportunities to stay by the river in SW3 for this price. More info and booking
Little Venice narrowboat Where the Regent's Canal meets the Paddington arm of the Grand Union Canal is where you'll find Jessie, the narrowboat. It's a two bedder that can sleep four people but we'd want the whole vessel to ourselves to fully enjoy the tranquil oasis of Little Venice and forget about the busy capital around us. The wooden interior is exactly what we'd expect of a narrowboat, and gives us warm fuzzy flashbacks to watching Rosie & Jim as children. More info and booking
Nine Elms houseboat Moored between Chelsea and Vauxhall bridges on a quiet part of the Thames, this houseboat has recently been redesigned into three luxury flats. Escape the bustle of the City or your noisy neighbours and rent either a double room or a whole flat and enjoy epic views of the water through floor to ceiling windows. All mod cons included, there is even an outdoor swimming pool on the pier. More info and booking
Dutch clipper Ahoy captain! This Dutch clipper has been completely rebuilt in the last five years and is now moored in Battersea and sleeps up to six people. Guests get the whole ship to themselves although unfortunately, you're not allowed to actually sail her. We quite fancy having a dinner party at the eight-seater Captain's table upstairs. It's luxurious aboard with two double cabins, en-suite wet rooms and a wood-fired stove to keep things cosy. More info and booking
Romantic boat If it's romance you're after — a night away from the children, or an anniversary treat — this boat is the one for you and yours: colourful, comfortable, with room just for two. Its location is in a locked mooring, so the only unexpected visitor that you're likely to get is the cute cat, who may stop by. More info and booking
Brentford cabin Hire a cabin onboard this canal boat on the River Brent and experience a more tranquil London. In prime position to explore the cultural treasures of west London, it's an easy walk to Syon House, Gunnersbury Park, Chiswick, Kew and Richmond plus there are plenty of nice local pubs to try. More info and booking

All aboard the Sunborn Yacht Hotel London
- Stef Bottinelli
With beautiful cabins, stunning views and delicious food, the superyacht moored by the Excel in East London is not just a four star hotel, but a veritable experience.
Moored by the Royal Victoria Dock, right next to the Excel, Sunborn Yacht London is the only first floating hotel in the capital.
The superyacht arrived in the UK in April 2014 and opened to guests in the autumn of the same year. It’s been very popular ever since, thanks to its beauty, interesting concept, proximity to the Excel and the city and the fact that it has a marriage licence.
The 128 metre-long, five storey craft boasts 136 roomy and elegant cabins and suites, spectacular views of Canary Wharf and central London, fine dining in the form of the Lands End Restaurant, the Sundown Bar, meeting and conference rooms, an auditorium and for those in need of pampering, even an Elemis SPA.
With its grand central staircase, spectacular crystal chandelier, teak wood panelling and brass railings, staying at the Sunborn feels like being on a luxurious cruise ship (albeit one that doesn’t sail, as this yacht does not have an engine). And with kingsize room prices starting at just under £140 per night, this is a cruise that won’t break the bank and it’s certainly cheaper than buying your own yacht or chartering one.
We visited Sunborn London on a splendid autumnal Sunday. We were immediately impressed by our spacious and stylish room (a term preferred by the management rather than cabin, which conjures up a cramped space), all wood and clean lines with a comfortable double bed, sitting room area, an all white bathroom stocked with Molton Brown products, mini bar, tea and coffee facilities, a large TV, free WIFI, a tablet and stunning views across the Thames.
After settling in, we headed for the Sundown Bar, and enjoyed a glass of wine on deck, watching the sun setting over the London skyline – a very relaxing way to spend the end of the weekend.
Post aperitif we headed upstairs to the Lands End Restaurant, were dinner was fine indeed. The menu has a modern British/European feel and is well thought out, with simple, classic and delicious dishes. Starters include mouthwatering scallops with spring onion, pea purée, soft shell crab (£13), octopus tranche, red pepper & onion confit, avocado, lime & chilli (£11.00) and chicken and leek mousse and Shimeji mushroom & honey roast ham, chive beurre blanc (£11.00). Mains feature duck leg confit, celery root, roasted plum, watercress soubise (£22.00), sea bass, fennel textures, Polonaise sauce (£21.00) and pickled & slow braised pork belly, buttered savoy cabbage, carrot purée, beetroot with cider jus (£20.00). Vegetarians are well catered for too with at least two imaginative and tasty options per course, such as an entrée of cauliflower and ginger pudding, spinach shortbread, Parmesan foam (£10.00) and mains of vegetable roulade, spinach, goat cheese with tomato fondue (£18.00) and gnocchi, Stilton cheese, roasted almonds and herbs (£16.00).
Sunborn London Yacht Hotel doesn’t just offer a luxurious stay, but a real experience. Its proximity to the Excel and the city and its connections to central London by public transports or boat, make it an excellent alternative to standard accommodation, whether you are in the capital for pleasure or for business, or simply want to spend a relaxing weekend pretending you are indeed chartering a yacht, sailing away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Quick stats about vacation rentals in London
Your guide to london, all about london.
Few cities on the planet pack as much into their crooked, cobbled streets as London. Located on the banks of the River Thames, Great Britain’s capital sprawls in every direction, exhausting any traveler with ambitions of doing it all in one trip. The best approach to exploring this 2,000-year-old megalopolis: Pick your spots wisely. Spend some time in the West End theatre district taking in some of the brilliant performances before heading out to dinner. When it rains, venture over to South Kensington to explore the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, and Victoria & Albert Museum, whose massive collection spans 5,000 years of art, from ancient to contemporary.
This end of town is also distinguished for its great shopping, so fuel up at a gastropub and walk along the high street to check out the latest in fashion. Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square are must on any visit. Grab one of the Santander bikes throughout the city to help you cover more ground, but of course if you have the time, the best way to explore London is by walking.
The best time to stay in a vacation rental in London
Summer is the best time to enjoy the limited good weather London has to offer. London can experience rain every day throughout the year, but the thing to remember is that it doesn’t always last very long. You may wake up to clear blue skies and sunshine, only to walk out the front door of your London vacation rental after a breakfast of tea and toast to grey skies and drizzle. And yet, it could all change by the time you leave the Tube at your destination. All of this is to say that you should always be prepared with an umbrella. In the summertime, weather can be finicky and so it’s best to bring long pants and a sweater for cooler days and evenings, but it’s also when Londoners head to the city parks and music festivals. In the autumn, though, it’s a great time to throw on a cozy sweater and head to a neighbourhood pub for a classic roast.
Top things to do in London
Borough market and the queen’s walk.
Head down to Borough Market, a marketplace under a bridge full of street food, fresh produce, and a lively atmosphere. Grab lunch at one of the many vendors on a weekend. From here you can peek out from under the London Bridge overpass to get a glimpse of the Shard. Then walk between the historic buildings, but take your time because this part of town is home to a number of small shops and historic architecture. Just nearby is the Queen’s Walk. This riverside stroll will take you past iconic sights like the Tate Modern, National Theatre, and the London Eye to Westminster Bridge.
Shoreditch is a hip district in the East End of London. It’s got restaurants and bars galore, but one of its other main draws is its fantastic street art. Starting in the Old Spitalfields Market you can take a walking tour which continues through the small surrounding streets to see and learn about some of the neighbourhood’s famous murals. While in the neighbourhood, also be sure to check out Brick Lane, and have a curry in one of its restaurants.
The Regent’s Park and Canal
This lush green space is one of London’s largest and most beautiful parks. It is a great place for a bike ride or a lazy Sunday picnic by the lake. The canals are lined with houseboats, where people actually live and enjoy the heart of London, but it’s also a beautiful space for cutting across town while seeing the sights along the way. Head east you will quickly end up in the vibrant and bustling Camden Town, with its famed market and shops.

The vibe: Grayscale luxury apartment Bed & bath: 2 bedrooms, 2 baths Top amenities: Fully equipped kitchen, espresso machine, and formal dining area for six Neighborhood: St. James’s
Here's another Airbnb Luxe with an incomparably posh address: Two Jermyn Street. It's location puts you dead center of one of London's most iconic fashion districts. (Need to get your bearings? We love the Jermyn Street Fashion Walk tours.) The home itself is a glamorous affair with an open-concept living room, a dining table with space for six, a galley kitchen, and two big bedrooms (both with ensuite bathrooms). Plus, the fifth-floor apartment has a private balcony—and you'll find designer furnishing throughout the entire home. Soho and The British Museum are nearby, you can get to Piccadilly Circus on foot in four minutes, and Kensington Palace is a mere two miles away.
Airbnb 9133028
The vibe: Bright, crisp, open Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1 bath Top amenities: Private patio garden, dedicated workspace with a printer, window bench Neighborhood: World’s End Estate
You'll never want to leave this Scandinavian-inspired home in the heart of Chelsea. The one-bedroom flat feels surprisingly spacious, in part because of its rare indoor-outdoor floor plan, featuring floor-to-ceiling accordion glass doors that open both the living room and kitchen onto the petite, ivy-covered patio. Perks of this London Airbnb include room-darkening curtains and a fireplace in the living room. The Thames River is a two-minute walk in one direction, and the shops and bistros of King's Road are also right around the corner.
Airbnb 20793292
The vibe: Spacious, entertainment hub Bed & bath: 2 bedrooms, 2 baths Top amenities: Egyptian linen, large living room space, en suite bathrooms Neighborhood: Belgravia
This charming Belgravia apartment is a place you'll be happy to stay awhile (and you can, if you so choose: the hosts allow long-term stays up to 90 days). Ideal for a small family, there are two bedrooms (one with a king bed and one with a queen bed), both of which have ensuite bathrooms. The large, open living area is filled with comfortable, contemporary furniture, while the kitchen has all the basics for family dinners: pots and pans, oil, salt and pepper, dishes and silverware, and a four-person dining table. Plus, you're a walk away from Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park.
Airbnb 34975036
The vibe: Grandeur with Wes Anderson–esque touches Bed & bath: 5 bedrooms, 5.5 baths Top amenities: Fireplace, video game system, deep soaking tub Neighborhood: Chelsea
Need lots of space? This five-bedroom townhouse in South Kensington has plenty of it, with a large living room and kitchen for relaxing. There's also a private atrium that's perfect for dining al fresco, should the weather permit. The home is extremely elegant, but not without fun, kid-friendly spaces. Case in point: one of the bedrooms features a treehouse-inspired bed, complete with a little ladder that ushers you into the fort-like retreat that’s filled with stuffed animals and colorful string lights. The price tag, undoubtedly, is high, but bear in mind that this is another Airbnb Luxe and come with luxury amenities, services, and a travel planning concierge. Here, housekeeping is included in your stay, and you can coordinate fresh groceries, a chef, and even child care for your stay at an extra fee.
Airbnb 45048820
The vibe: Pastel pink dream Bed & bath: 2 bedroom, 3 baths Top amenities: Private patio, washing machine with laundry detergent tablets provided, hospitality pack with kitchen staples and English delicacies Neighborhood: Chelsea
This quirky two-bedroom apartment belongs in our most colorful Airbnbs gallery, too, with its pastel pink Smeg fridge, pink-walled sunroom (shown above), and patterned wallpapers. Situated in a quiet neighborhood, there's a small balcony off both bedrooms and a garden out back to get some fresh air without leaving your home base, though South Kensington museums like the Victoria and Albert and Science museums are nearby, too. You'll have all the essentials and then some inside: The host, Robert, leaves a hospitality pack filled with bread, milk, eggs, butter, biscuits, and chocolates for guests, and the kitchen is stocked with basics like coffee, tea, sugar, oil and vinegar, and salt and pepper. To note, the second bedroom, with its two twin beds, also houses a sink and shower in the room, so guests may end up wanting to share the one larger bathroom.
Airbnb 42081759
The vibe: Soft naturecore studio in the heart of London Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1 bath Top amenities: Gym and lounge access, king-size bed, Wi-Fi Neighborhood: Blackfriars
For those looking to spend a few days away from home, this one-bedroom Airbnb (located inside an aparthotel ) checks all the boxes: contactless check-in, space to cook your own meals, “blazing-fast Wi-Fi” per one reviewer, and a dedicated work space, plus a spacious lounge area downstairs. The room is just big enough for one, or a couple, with a king-size bed and clean, amenities-filled bathroom. Outside, there are places to sit along the River Thames, and in the hotel lobby, a café that previous guests recommend for gelato or coffee.
Airbnb 7071134
The vibe: Chic apartment with optimal lounging space Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1 bath Top amenities: Sonos sound system, balcony, coffee maker Neighborhood: Earl’s Court
This sophisticated Airbnb boasts high ceilings and is filled with natural light, statement art, and impressive decor. Both the living space and the lofted bedroom (complete with a king bed) feature Sonos sound systems. The apartment's balcony overlooks a beautiful garden square and features a café table where you can enjoy a coffee while watching the morning bustle below. Holland Park is just steps away.
Airbnb 11469499
The vibe: Romantic and moody Bed & bath: 2 bedrooms, 1 bath Top amenities: Filled bookcase, fireplace, Pack ’n Play crib Neighborhood: Angel
This London Airbnb is another one of our favorites, just within the Zone 1 tube boundary. The surrounding neighborhood is charming and quaint, with a nearby canal made for morning walks. The two-bedroom home itself has an eclectic design, effortlessly blending classic furniture with bohemian touches. We're especially fond of the book-filled living room and oversized art throughout the home. This Airbnb is a welcome retreat to come home to after a day of London sightseeing (Big Ben, Covent Garden, Westminster Abbey, and so on).
Airbnb 12997485
The vibe: A light-filled bohemian getaway Bed & bath: 2 bedrooms, 2 baths Top amenities: Freestanding bath, dedicated workspace, record player Neighborhood: Westbourne
If you're looking for a true neighborhood vibe—and easy access to the rest of the city—this Westbourne Green Airbnb is ideal. Walking distance from Notting Hill and Portobello Market and near a number of tube stations, the home itself has two bedrooms (one of which has a freestanding tub, score ), enormous kitchen-living-room-dining-room, workspace for checking emails, and roof terrace for sunset views over the city. Bonus, it's an Airbnb Plus , so the home has been vetted by an Airbnb rep and has all the basics: an ironing board, linens, closet and drawer space for guests, a well-lit entry, easy check-in, comfortable mattresses, a coffee maker, a bathroom free of the host's personal items, and toiletries like shampoo, making it ideal for a first timer used to hotel amenities.
Airbnb 14993945
The vibe: A charming one-bedroom with brick accents Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1 bath Top amenities: Hotel-quality bed linens and towels, fully equipped kitchen, 55” TV with streaming capabilities Neighborhood: St. Saviour Estate
Located right by London Bridge tube station, this one-bedroom is a cozy home for any solo traveler or couple. The apartment is easily accessible and has 24-hour reception and security in the building, for added safety. The large kitchen is fully equipped for meals at home, and there's also a desk workspace for those working remotely. Bonus for those in town for work: The apartment is a short walk across the London Bridge, or a few tube stops, away from "The City," London's financial district.
Airbnb 17299024
The vibe: Minimalistic yet stylish flat Bed & bath: 2 bedrooms, 1 bath Top amenities: Private garden, grill, public pool across the street Neighborhood: Barnsbury Estate
Among our top-rated vacation rentals: This charming two-bed rental unit near Granary Square. If you want your own private ivy-lined patio in London , you've got it here, with a backyard grill to boot. And the apartment is just a few blocks from Camden Lock—an area around Regent's Canal that's great for morning strolls. Inside, the home has two bedrooms, each with king-size beds, and is minimally designed.

Stay on a luxury yacht…for less than £200
Beds on board: a new way to stay.
Modern families are an intrepid bunch, especially when it comes to our holidays. Looking beyond traditional hotels and b&bs, we’re g lamping in yurts, sleeping in tree houses and shacking up in shepherd’s huts. Thanks to the likes of Airbnb and Home Swap, we’re even holidaying in each other’s homes.
Now, with Beds on Board, you can spend the night on a luxury yacht, for less than the price of a Travelodge. But there’ll be no sailing off into the sunset – all boats are safely moored in marinas and moving them is strictly against the rules.
Beds on Board’s Mark Seamer tells me how it all began. In 2015, founder Tim Ludlow was at a busy regatta in Palma, Mallorca, struggling to find accommodation. All the hotels in town were fully booked and there was not a room to be had, but as Tim strolled along the waterfront, he noticed that most of the yachts in the marina were empty. That was the lightbulb moment.
At any given time 90% of yachts in UK marinas are empty, Mark explains, so Beds on Board was created to connect their owners with accommodation seekers. ‘It’s essentially Airbnb for boats’, he says.
It’s such a good idea and I can’t wait to take up Mark’s invitation to try it for myself.
She’ll do nicely. Amana, a Sunseeker yacht
How it works
The booking process is refreshingly simple. I sign up to the website, choose my required dates, destination and number of guests, and I’m given a selection of fancy boats to choose from. I select a gorgeous two-bedroom yacht called Amana, which the site tells me is a Sunseeker Camargue 50. She’s moored in Lymington Yacht Haven, in the desirable New Forest area.
It’s not as pricey as you might expect. In March, Amana costs £195 a night, which is less than some hotels in the area.
As bonkers as it sounds, staying on a yacht can be an economical choice for families, given that most have at least two bedrooms and so work out cheaper than checking into multiple hotel rooms.
Once I’ve booked, the boat owner has 48 hours to accept or reject my reservation. Later that day, I’m contacted by Jason, the friendly owner of Amana. He’s incredibly welcoming and happy to answer all my questions.
‘Can I bring my dog?’ I ask, wincing as I scroll through photos of Amana’s soft, white leather interiors. ‘Of course!’ Jason responds, to my delight. That evening, I flounce into the living room and announce to my husband that we’re all off to stay on a yacht.
Amana in the early evening light
Just like Airbnb, when guests arrive at the start of their stay, they’re met either by the boat owner or by his or her representative. My husband and I are met by Jason’s rep, the charming Samantha, at Lymington Yacht Haven. Check-in starts at 3pm and Amana is bathed in golden afternoon light when we first step onboard.
I’m struck by how immaculate she is and silently congratulate myself for packing a dog towel. The deck is spotless and we’re welcomed by a vase of fresh daffodils and bottle of wine in an ice bucket. I know we’re going to love it here. There’s even a packet of Captain Jack dog biscuits for our four-legged companion, Flint.
Inside, the walnut interiors glisten and plump towels are waiting on our bed. There’s a kitchen (galley in boat-speak) with all mod-cons, including a hob, microwave and to my husband’s delight, a Nespreso coffee machine.
A very warm welcome
A white leather sofa stretches the length of the living room and there’s a fold-out dining table. At either end of the boat are two en-suite bedrooms with showers.
Samantha gives us the lowdown on how everything works, but since we won’t be sailing anywhere, there’s nothing to be intimidated by. It’s mostly a case of getting to grips with the heating and making sure we know where the bottle opener is.
Jason’s detailed welcome pack invites us to help ourselves to tea and coffee. He’s even left us beer and wine, along with an honesty tin (which is so honest that there’s already money in there when we arrive).
Captain Flint at the helm (just pretending of course – sailing isn’t allowed!)
A taste of the high-life
Even without the prospect of a cruise, being on the boat is exciting. Reclining on deck with a glass of something cold as the sun sets over the water, we feel like interlopers in a world we’d never normally have access to. A boat like this would cost thousands to charter, but here we are – and for tonight, it’s all ours.
Marinas, by their very nature, are in pretty places with great restaurants, and the beauty of a Beds on Board stay is that you’re never far from a scenic waterfront stroll or great evening out.
That being said, a night onboard can be just as fun as going out. Unlike a hotel room, you can cook for yourselves and enjoy a meal on deck watched by expectant seagulls, or cuddle up in-front of a film as the sea gently rocks you to sleep (Amana has Sky and a hefty DVD collection).
Amana’s cosy main cabin
Lymington Yacht Haven neighbours a picturesque nature reserve. When we eventually tear ourselves away from the boat, we walk Flint along the seawall, looking down on ducks bobbing about in the salt marshes. A footpath called Solent Way runs from the marina all the way to Milford on Sea, hugging the coast. It’s a pretty five mile walk, but we only manage one or two, before our wimpy city dog starts dragging his feet.
We arrived in Lymington under a warm sun, but this being March in England, by the time we go to bed the wind is howling and rain thunders down on the roof. But we’re on a big boat, so a storm is thrilling! There’s something deliciously comforting about snuggling under a heavy duvet as the weather rages outside.
The next morning we awake to pale sunlight streaming in through the portholes, seagulls cawing softly and a text from boat owner Jason. He wants to know if we slept alright and survived the weather. ‘Do you have everything you need?’, he asks. Jason tells us to stay as long as want, even though check-out is officially at 11am.
Amy admires the Lymington-Keyhaven Nature Reserve, in the New Forest National Park
Staying on Amana is like spending the night in a luxury hotel, with the personal touches of a family-run b&b. Even though we never meet Jason in person, I’ve rarely stayed anywhere where I’ve felt so looked after.
Unsurprisingly, this new accommodation trend is catching on and Beds on Board now has boats in over 50 countries. It’s impressive stuff from such a young company and Mark is excited about the future. ‘Our aim is to offer travellers a million new beds around the world, without doing a single bit of construction.’
Back in London, I brag to friends about our weekend on a yacht (for under £200) and they all react in the same way – what a brilliant idea! They all say they’re going to try it. After all, w ho wouldn’t want to enjoy the glorious yachting lifestyle without the responsibility or the price tag that go with it?
Calm after the storm: morning breaks over the marina
Beds on Board: the lowdown
- Search bedsonboard.com for a boat in the place you’re visiting
- Chat to the boat owner through Beds on Board’s message centre
- Hop onboard and enjoy a quirky stay!
Prices start from around £50 a night and you can book everything from sleek catamarans and sailing boats to super yachts that come with their own crew (around £7,000 a night)
Amana, the boat I stayed on, starts at £195 per night for up to four people
