A stunning yacht was docked in Cardiff Bay on Saturday (September 23). Nearby residents had seen the Scenic Eclipse II travelling from Penarth to the city on Friday afternoon.
Scenic Eclipse II, which was launched in 2020, is a yacht that provides "all-inclusive luxury", according to its website, and can carry up to 228 guests. The yacht at 545ft long, has travelled all over the world and offers voyages in Antarctica and the Chilean Fjords. At the end of March, the yacht also journeys along the South American coastline before crossing the Atlantic bound for mainland Europe.
In the spring and summer time, the yacht can offer travellers a series of Mediterranean, Baltic and Arctic cruises before crossing the Atlantic and sailing in the USA, the Caribbean and South America. While the yacht boasts 114 suites, it also has 10 restaurants, and eight lounges and bars.

At the moment, the vessel has just finished a 10 day cruise around the Scottish Islands and has begun a two week tour of western Europe, starting in Dublin and finishing in Lisbon. Prices start at £5,697 per person.
The vessel, which can carry up to 17,085 tonnes, also provides both a helicopter and submarine for "optional excursions", it says, along with a fleet of Zodiacs, kayaks and e-bikes. Photos taken of the yacht on Saturday morning shows the large size of the yacht.
The yacht isn't the only interesting vessel to have docked in Cardiff recently. In June, a huge sailing ship called The S.V. Tenacious docked in Cardiff Bay and offered a taster to the public of what life at sea was like before it departed for Liverpool.
The S.V. Tenacious, which is owned and operated by the Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST), is currently the only sea-going tall ship in the world that can be sailed by a mixed ability crew, including disabled people, those with mental health conditions or long-term ill-health issues. You can read more about this here.
In March of this year, the Dutch Navy vessel, HNLMS Van Amstel , was docked in ABP's Port of Cardiff, and was assisted by SMS tugboats Riverman and Englishman. The ship was previously involved in the response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
And in November of last year, a massive Canadian military ship was docked in Cardiff. HMCS Montréal , which has its homeport in CFB Halifax in Nova Scotia, had been deployed on anti-terrorism missions in Europe and had been involved in NATO missions too.

The Ranie Buoy (PORT HAND BUOY) marks the extremity of the rocks and sand spit of Lavernock Point. The south Cardiff cardinal buoy makes the southern extremity of the Cardiff Grounds. From a position between the two buoys make a course for the Outer Wrach Buoy (West Cardinal Buoy). Follow the Wrach Channel and Buoys into the Cardiff Bay Outer Harbour.
When approaching from the South or West, leave the Ranie Buoy (FL(2)R.5s) to PORT and the SOUTH CARDIFF (FLQ(6)+LFL.15s) to STARBOARD. Steer a course for the OUTER WRACH BUOY (FLQ(6)+LFL.15s). You will pick up the SECTOR LIGHTS for the WRACH CHANNEL (oc 10s WRG). Stay in the white sector until you pick up the Buoyed channel for the CARDIFF BAY OUTER HARBOUR and the sector light (LFI.WRG5s). Note: Vessels coming from Kings Road (Avonmouth) are advised to use the SOUTH/WEST APPROACH. It is important that you keep a careful watch for large vessels coming from Cardiff Docks as they are severely constrained by their draught.
On approach to Cardiff Bay you should contact Barrage Control on VHF 18 to request a lock in. They will advise you of the next available lock and give the instruction to enter the outer harbour.
- Inbound locks run quarter past and quarter to the hour
- Outbound locks run on the hour and half hour
- Please be sure to observe the light signals displayed
- Vessels may pass under the fully lowered bridge if there is sufficient air draft.
- When the 3 vertical red lights are extinguished either side of the bridge you may proceed.
- The air draft of the closed bridge is approx 4.5m please check the notices displayed either side of the bridge before you proceed.
- Orange lights are illuminated under the lifting span at night to confirm that it is closed.
- When the bridge is being prepared to open or close, the lights either side will show fixed red- no vessels are to proceed.
- A request to lift the bridge can be made on VHF Channel 18 Barrage Control.
- The bridge may be lifted on request at 05 and 35 minutes past the hour (24 hours a day).

What Choose
Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Cardiff Bay
At Yachting.Rent, we believe that every sailing experience is unique, and the vessel you choose plays a pivotal role in shaping that experience. Cardiff Bay, with its serene waters and panoramic views, offers ample opportunities for both sailing boats and catamarans. But the question remains: which is the right choice for your next adventure in this Welsh water wonderland?
Sailing boats, the classic symbols of maritime grace, are the very embodiment of tradition and elegance. Their slender design, single hull, and deep keel provide an intimate connection with the water, making them ideal for those who crave an authentic sailing experience in Cardiff Bay. They offer a balletic dance with the wind, where every gust and shift can be keenly felt, and the thrill of tacking and gybing is unparalleled. Sailing boats also bring you closer to Cardiff Bay’s rich history, echoing the tales of ancient mariners who once navigated these waters. They’re perfect for small groups or couples seeking a more personalized and romantic experience. With Yachting.Rent’s carefully curated fleet of sailing boats, you’re promised an intimate communion with Cardiff Bay, where every ripple tells a story.
On the other hand, catamarans, with their twin hulls and broader decks, are all about stability and space. They provide a distinct vantage point, allowing sailors to view Cardiff Bay from a comfortable and spacious setting. The wider stance ensures minimal tilt, making them especially suitable for families with kids or larger groups. The dual-hull design also offers shallower drafts, allowing you to venture closer to some of the bay’s hidden nooks and crannies. With Yachting.Rent’s selection of state-of-the-art catamarans, you’re promised a blend of luxury, comfort, and panoramic views. If it’s a party, a family gathering, or just a desire for a roomier sailing experience you’re after, the catamaran is your vessel of choice.
In conclusion, the choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran in Cardiff Bay hinges on the experience you seek. If it’s tradition, intimacy, and a direct feel of the waters, the sailing boat beckons. If stability, space, and panoramic luxury are on your checklist, the catamaran stands tall. Regardless of your choice, Yachting.Rent assures an unparalleled experience. With our expertly maintained fleet and seasoned crew, we ensure that your voyage in Cardiff Bay, be it on a sailing boat or a catamaran, becomes a cherished memory. After all, in the end, it’s not just about the vessel, but the tales you gather and the horizons you chase.

Cardiff Bay History
Cardiff Bay is an area of water and former docklands located in Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, UK. Its history dates back to the 19th century when Cardiff became one of the busiest ports in the world, exporting coal from the South Wales Valleys to fuel the Industrial Revolution.
The Cardiff Bay area was originally a tidal estuary of the River Taff and River Ely, and was used as a natural harbor by the Vikings and Normans in medieval times. The first dock was built in the area in 1794, and by the 1850s, Cardiff was the world's largest coal-exporting port.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the docklands were expanded with the construction of the Queen Alexandra Dock, which was the largest coal-exporting dock in the world at the time. The area continued to thrive until the 1950s, when competition from other ports and the decline of the coal industry led to a decline in the area's fortunes.
By the 1980s, much of the docklands area had fallen into disrepair and dereliction, and plans were made to regenerate the area. The Cardiff Bay Development Corporation was established in 1987, and over the following years, a large-scale redevelopment project took place.
Today, Cardiff Bay is a bustling waterfront area with a mix of residential, commercial, and cultural attractions. The area is home to the Wales Millennium Centre, a performing arts venue that opened in 2004, as well as numerous bars, restaurants, and shops. The area also includes several tourist attractions, such as the Doctor Who Experience, the Norwegian Church Arts Centre, and the Senedd, the Welsh National Assembly building.

However, the bay is sheltered by surrounding hills, which can help to reduce the impact of strong winds. Overall, the climate in Cardiff Bay is pleasant and mild, making it a popular destination for visitors throughout the year.
Cardiff Bay Geography
Cardiff Bay is a tidal bay located in the southern part of Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. The bay is connected to the Bristol Channel by the Cardiff Bay Barrage, a large embankment that was constructed in the 1990s as part of a major regeneration project. The bay is approximately 2.5 square kilometers (1 square mile) in size and has a maximum depth of around 10 meters (33 feet).
The bay is surrounded by a mix of residential, commercial, and cultural developments, including the Wales Millennium Centre, the Senedd (the Welsh National Assembly building), and a range of restaurants, bars, and shops. The bay is also home to several marinas, which provide moorings for boats and yachts.
The geography of Cardiff Bay is shaped by its history as a major port, with a range of docks and quaysides still visible in the area. In recent years, the area has undergone significant redevelopment, with many of the former industrial sites being converted into modern buildings and public spaces. The result is a vibrant and cosmopolitan waterfront area that is popular with locals and tourists alike.

7m Sail Boat - where in Cardiff Bay. Choice of two yacht clubs, which is best? Cardiff Marina seems quite a bit cheaper than Penarth Marina but you might get put behind the foot bridge - how much hassle is this. Any locals have an opinion. Pontoons with electric would be nice for a couple of months due to having young children and a place where they don't mind me doing some DIY work on the hard in the winter. Come March, I hope to be in a much better position to decide what to do next. Join one of the clubs and put her on a mooring?

I would suggest visiting both clubs and having a chat before making your mind up. I think CYC is a bit cheaper than CBYC but CBYC has a better pontoon system, about a third of the pontoons have electricity. Personally I wouldn't pay marina fees when you could be in a club . I have sent you a private message.

Cardiff Yacht Club operates on a one-off fee for your berth (plus a £60pa maint. fee) +membership fees so in the long run is cheaper - however the pontoons are versadock, and you moor mediteranian style against them, with moorings for your bow. There is no electricity or water on the pontoon system. Also, there is no fuel available in the club. Cardiff Bay Yacht Club is an annual marina fee +membership fees, but you moor normally (alongside) a proper pontoon berth. (which is also more sheltered as you are up-river) All the pontoons have water, though only A-E have electricity. CBYC has it's own deisel fuel. There is currently a 12 month wait for berths (according to website). Penarth Marina oviously has annual marina fees, and you have a proper marina berth (as CBYC) though you pay more per year (even inc. CBYC membership fees). All pontoons have water & electricity. There is diesel & petrol available. Cardiff Marina also has annual marina fees, and costs similar to CBYC's total, and again you have a proper marina berth. Water and electricity to all berths. deisel is available. You may be berthed up-river of pont-y-werin bridge. This isn't a problem though as you just radio barrage control to lift it (though they'll only lift it twice an hour during the day, and once an hour at night) Out of the two yacht clubs, CBYC has a better pontoon system, and only CBYC has electricity, though CYC is cheaper. Out of the marinas, Cardiff Marina is cheaper (similar to CBYC), though Penarth Marina is a bit quicker to get out of (due to it's position)
Cardiff Yatch Club does have water on C pontoon. I joined about 5 years ago. An incredibly frendly place. If refurbishing a boat there is power and Water in the yard.
I'm curious as to why so many people need 230v? What do you use that the boat system can't provide?
its a small boat with an outboard. Batteries are charged from a solar panel. British weather tends to be cloudy.

Although a little late. I would also ask about Security. As don't think some are Manned 24/7.
Cardiff Bay Yacht Club has a waiting list for pontoon moorings but it usually is less than 12 months. Its more expensive than Cardiff Yacht Club which in turn is a bit more like a traditional sailing club. Not to say that CBYC is snooty or anything like, but it has become more of a marina with a club attached. Lots of big power boats with absentee owners. So if you are the sort of individual who likes joining in a clubs social life, maybe CYC is a better bet. Both clubs allow you to work on your boat on the hard but in the case of CBYC it isnt cheap after the first month because onshore space is short supply. Boatyard facilities are excellent with good professional staff handling lift outs and launches. Cant comment on the CYC facilities - not a member there. The CYC pontoons are third rate IMO requiring you to pick up a stern line and moor bow to before leaping over your pullpit onto pontoons with all the rigidity of my stomach muscles. Sorry but I would class them as cheap and nasty. How far are you from Cardiff and in what direction? If you are central, northern or to the east then consider Newport Uskmouth SC. This is a trad sailing club with excellent facilities and yard space to do anything you want. Moorings come free with a membership that is just £200 or so pa. http://http://www.nusc.co.uk/ . No pontoons just river moorings and therefore no leccy. But the savings on mooring costs would fund several generators each year!
Another recommendation for Cardiff Yacht Club. My annual fees are close to what some marinas would charge every month. No electric and not all slots have a tap nearby but if you need it, go over and pay the visitors rate at CBYC (£10 for 5 nights) and use their visitors facilities for doing maintenance etc. other than that CYC has all you could ever need. Friendly and good atmosphere. It's awesome being able to sail around the bay in flat water no matter what the wind or tides are doing outside, such a great place to have a boat!
Thanks for the replies. I live in Bristol and work in Wiltshire so getting down to the club nights has proven difficult so far. I am currently in Cardiff Marina on winter rates which are not too bad but I will need to decide what I am going to do come April. Still haven't made up my mind. Having young kids (2yr old and a ten month old) is leaning me towards electric, water and a pontoon.

For me would be Penarth Quays Marina. Electrics, Water, Fuel, Chandlers, Restaurant, On/Off Pontoons and 24/7 security also with closed locks at night
If you live in bristol, portishead is a far better option. CYC is the most expensive option for the first year as you have to lodge a few thousand pounds as a deposit to get a pontoon place You will be unlikely to get a pontoon with electric at CBYC, the first few pontoons are full of posh boats. The smaller and rougher your boat the further away you seem to be put. This is obvious from a quick motor up the river. Cardiff marina is your best option in the bay, as I believe there is no extra charge for being in the boatyard. The toilet/showers are pretty crap though If you want to be able to spend a lot of time on board then penarth or portishead marinas have far better facilities.

I wouldn't set foot in the place or anywhere else with only 1 star. They are taking the pi$$. The age concern café in barry is run by a group of unpaid volunteers they do cooked breakfasts and lunches so would have had the same inspection as pier 64. They managed 5 out of 5.

So did the Caf in the Marina, the pikey pub (oystercatcher) up the road, and the Custom House. Agree it's a shocking performance by pier64 and reflects badly, it has certainly changed my opinion of them.
