As an integral part of the group of timepieces that put Seiko on the map, Seiko divers’ watches have a storied history and complexity as timepieces. Evolving from their origin as one of the Seiko brand’s baseline watches, they have found a following in the watch modding community as baseline modders’ watches. As a result, Seiko has become a sought-out brand for watch modification aficionados with a motley of movements and mod parts that are easily available out in the open market. Follow us as we take a deep dive into knowing how essential the Seiko brand is for horology enthusiasts of diverse persuasions today, just how “moddable” Seiko watches are, and how you can recreate an exorbitantly expensive luxury watch using a Seiko divers’ watch.

Watch modding - horological counterculture?

People have said that owning and wearing a watch is symbolic of one's status in life. However, owning and wearing watches and timepieces can be more than that. They can also be symbolic of you, your traits, and your personality. By personalizing and altering components (modifying or "modding") of your favored wrist-worn daily ally, you create your own label or symbol for yourself and change how the rest of the world can see you. 

Modifying a watch or a timepiece can also be a form of subverting typical cultural norms like capitalism and the manufacturing of various consumer goods, in this case, watches and timepieces. Some watch modification enthusiasts believe that their modding can be considered acts of defiance against the mass production of watches and timepieces. Although numerous parts for watch modification use have been mass-produced, watch modders' horological counterculture sentiments still manage to flare because of the creative flair that they showcase in their personalized pieces. With the wide availability of mod parts, watch parts, and their numerous variant styles, one can definitely and almost limitlessly exercise their right to express themselves through the modern art of watch modification. 

Those who became part of the community have various reasons to enjoy customization. Some want to focus on tinkering with watch parts; some are curious about how things work. Finally, some want to achieve a specific look different from the original timepiece from the stores because they find the typical store items to be dull.

Now, don't worry if you're just starting to dip your toe in the watch modding scene. You're not the only one. Setting out to design your watch from scratch can be challenging. Every brilliant and skillful watch modder started as a newbie. And there's no shame in starting with little to no knowledge of watch modding - as long as you start somewhere.

Lots of horology enthusiasts turn to Seiko for watch modification purposes because of the brand's relative price-friendliness and the extensive accessibility of mod parts for Seiko watches. Ready-made Seiko mod parts and watch parts are always ready for purchase in stores, whether physically or online. Additionally, one can get ready-made Seiko mod parts from reputable businesses online, like a ceramic bezel. Now, deciding on what kind of watch you want to mod is essential to doing a decent watch modification. So you can go ahead and pick a commonly modded watch type from Seiko. One of the go-to watch types for watch modding is the discontinued but still affordably available Seiko SKX007, a divers' watch. 

By checking on tips from the watch modding community and online support, you will find the information you need to search for and work with the parts you need for watch modification. Of course, the choice to have the watch modification job done professionally is also available to you. But where's the fun in that? After all, with all these continual periods of lockdown and quarantine, one might as well learn something new at home. A timepiece for MODern consumers

The Seiko SKX007 is legendary. As mentioned earlier, this particular timepiece by Seiko is affordable, yes, but also timeless. Its classic looks have inspired many in the watch modification community to produce mod parts dedicated to it. It has a history as an ever-reliable watch that could accompany you to dive as deep in the oceanic depths as much as you can or need. That storied reputation made it clear for horology enthusiasts with little or no modding experience that it was the choice watch for personalization and modification. Why? Because it was durable. It could stand to get modded.

Although Seiko discontinued the SKX007, it has become a collector's item. In addition, a slew of imitative SKXs is out in the market. Some of the imitations are downright worthless, but some of the higher-quality replicas can be very convincing and might fool a would-be buyer into spending more than they ought to. The SKX007 was never meant to be a premium or luxury watch. Instead, it utilized an inexpensive movement paired with utilitarian parts, making imitation SKXs easy for replica manufacturers to create.

However, it might be better to build a Seiko SKX007 from the depths up, so to speak. The SKX007 was a great budget diver's watch at its best. It never tried to compete with other watches in terms of make and materials, and it was a reliable go-to watch for anyone that needed a quality watch that could work for years without any issues or need for service.

But for the more advanced and aggressive watch modder or horology enthusiast, rebuilding one could be the best way to express oneself with a one-of-a-kind timepiece. Especially since the problem with getting a limited SKX piece today is that it can be too expensive. However, if you were to buy it as a watch collector's item, that could still work. However, be sure to keep it in a safe place or compartment, and do not wear it too often outside of your home - if that's what you want out of your SKX. 

For anyone that wants an SKX-style watch made to be used, it makes a lot more sense to build one. It could be more labor-intensive, but it is less pricey that way. After all, it would be a labor of love for any lover of watches and timepieces.

The Seiko Yachtmaster

A less daunting way of approaching a watch mod job for beginners is to turn to aspirational builds inspired by well-known watch designs or timepiece designs. Introducing the Seiko Yachtmaster modification build - a watch mod style that will surely never fail to steal the attention of anyone in the same room you are in. So let's dive right in! In watch modding, you can recreate the style of a more exorbitantly-priced timepiece for cheaper. And with vastly more creative freedom.

The Seiko Yachtmaster (YM) mod build is one of the most popular and well-loved builds in the watch modding community. One of the easiest ways to distinguish this build or style is through its bezel insert. There are several variant colors of Seiko SKX007 Yachtmaster bezel inserts, including silver, gold, and black, just to name a few. As a result, this build is generally bigger and showier than similar-looking builds like the Submariner.

Some Seiko Yachtmaster build choices that are available for you out in the watch modification world are:

• The black Yachtmaster build  - one of the most popular builds because of its effortlessly cool appeal, and of course, black can go well with anything.
• The golden Yachtmaster build  - bold and brustling, not everyone can wear this build; only certain personalities can aptly wear a full-on gold watch (but when paired with the right wearer, this Yachtmaster build will dominate any room it's in).
• The silver Yachtmaster build  - perfect for those who prefer their statement pieces to be subtler; an elegant and sophisticated build choice that will look good on any wrist.
• The two-tone Yachtmaster build  - features two different metallic tones (usually gold and silver) or one metallic tone paired with black or another shade; balance is key to the fabulousness of this build.

It’s fair to say that watch wearing has become more than just a marker of status. People refuse to be labeled by what they wear; instead, they alter parts of the timepiece to suit their personality and lifestyle.

Modifying a watch can also be a form of defiance against the mass production of timepieces. Now that finely crafted watch parts are widely available, the possibility of customization and freedom to create a personalized style is infinite.

Some want to develop their focus by tinkering with watch parts; some are curious about  how things work; and some want to achieve a specific look that’s different from the original timepiece when they got it from the store. Off-the-shelf stuff is boring.

Don’t worry if you’re just starting to dip your toe in the watch modding scene. You’re not the only one. Setting out to design your own watch from scratch can be really challenging. In our years of selling Seiko mod parts , modifying our own watches, and interacting with the community, we've come to understand that every brilliant and skillful watch modder started as a newbie. And there's no shame in that!

One less intimidating way of approaching a watch mod is to take inspiration from well-known builds. For this purpose, we spent some time deconstructing and contextualizing popular watch mods in this new series of articles, which we're coining "Behind the Build". 

First off, we’ll be starting with the Seiko Yachtmaster Mod -- a style that never fails to grab someone’s attention.

Let's dive (wink wink) right in.

The Seiko Yachtmaster

The Seiko Yachtmaster (YM) Mod is one of the most popular and well-loved style of builds by watch modders. The easiest way to distinguish this style is from the use of a Yachtmaster bezel insert. There are various color versions of Seiko SKX007 Yachtmaster bezel inserts which includes silver, gold, and black, just to name a few.

The bold, yet still somehow elegant, bezel insert style can be traced back to 1992 when the Rolex Yacht Master had its maiden voyage in the market. It received an overwhelming reception as it was a timepiece that just oozed opulence - The market had never before seen a luxury watch, designed for luxury seacraft owners. Additionally, the Yacht Master broke Rolex’s tradition of rarely launching watch variations as they decided to offer it in 29mm, 35mm, and 40mm sizes.

Who would have guessed that years  later, the Yacht Master would inspire watch modders and builders to emulate it, using the classic Seiko SKX007 as a platform? The SKX, the watch for the everyman, is everything that the Yachtmaster isn't - and yet the pairing of the two diametrically opposed styles seems so natural when you look at a well-executed Yachtmaster build.

Gold Yachtmaster

The full gold Yachtmaster style build is definitely not an easy one to pull off - you have to possess a certain type of personality to wear a full gold watch, and not allow it wear you instead. That being said - when done right, it looks absolutely bling-tastic.

Silver Yachtmaster

Don't think the full gold look is up your alley? A Silver Yachtmaster build might be what you're looking for. Paired with the right  watch dial , it's the classy and understated choice.

Black Yachtmaster

Black Yachtmaster builds are by and large one of the most popular ways to execute this style. It's no surprise that our Black YM Style bezel insert is our bestselling bezel insert, of all time!

They're low-key, stealthy, and just look so damn cool. Some Black Yachtmaster style builds use a black watch case, as shown in the above image. Others prefer to use a silver watch case, which adds a nice bit of contrast. See below for an example.

Two-Tone Yachtmaster

Two-tone builds are usually identified by their use of two different tones of metal, with gold being one of the accent tones. Popular combinations are black and gold, or silver and gold. A great two-tone build is all about balance, and when executed well, they're one of the most gorgeous watches out there.

This style has its fair share of fans, evident by the many incredible photos circulating on Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and various websites. But some are still on the fence because not all modders, and would-be modders, successfully find compatible parts needed for their first SKX Yachtmaster build. Another issue is - there are so many different parts, where does one even start?

Beginners may also encounter doubts, and feel discouraged about whether they can make the mod work. These are common, and very normal, issues that are typically faced even by experienced modders.

It really takes time and repetition to transition from clumsy hands into being able to pull off precise movements and apply just the right pressure to achieve the first build.

We admit though, that the process is a bit technical. And handling delicate bits of a watch to build an SKX007 Yachtmaster mod, or any other style of watch build, requires patience and some level of dedication.

Better than I expected 

I was a bit skeptic regarding the quality considering the price but I have to say it’s even better than more expansive MODs I have bought in the past, especially the bezel, and it comes with the tools to adjust the bracelet as well as a handy travel case

The steel bracelet is great but for daily wear and to give it a more sporty look the Rubber strap has been just perfect, and I ended up using mostly that

The watch looks solid and well made, nontheless the packaging is not exactly luxurious, a small leather case or something of that sort could make it feel like a true luxrury timepiece, just a reccomandation

Grat watch, not so great delivery

I have to say I’m a bit disappointed, the watch took one week longer to arrive, first they told me that it will take two days more to assemble since they were having an overload of orders, then the package got stuck in transit and they could only say to reach out to USPS, not satisfied by the post-purchase support

What a watch and customer support

I spoke with them for so long before ordering, I think we went on for 2 or 3 weeks, and they always patiently responded, the dj Arabic mod looks amazing and much better in real life

I’ve never been that much into watches but this looked so good I wanted to try, my first automatic watch ever and I can’t take it off

Beautiful Arabic dial

Seiko SRPD55 Mod

This Seiko SRPD55 Mod was put together for a client here in Cornwall. The original idea was to mix the Seiko SRPD79 dial, hour and minute hands with a red submariner second hand. Also, chapter ring modded to include red hour markers and put this into the stainless steel case. (See this mock up below.)

Although these images are pretty “raw”, they are great to help the client visualise what they want. An assistance if I haven’t got any photos or the request is a little out of the norm.

We started with the Seiko SRPD55, with the idea of a black Yacht Master. So, this Seiko Mod includes; a brushed stainless steel chapter ring, the double dome blue AR coated crystal and finished with a black Yacht Master bezel.

Seiko SRPD55 Mod – Bezel Insert

The bezel is removed from the watch, which allows the insert to be separated from the bezel.

The insert is attached to the bezel with double sided tape. This needs to be removed before the new bezel insert can be put in place with some fresh tape. Acetone and a little plastic scraper makes light work of this and prepares the bezel – removing the grease so the new sticky tape gains a good adhesion to the steel.

Removal of the Crystal & Chapter Ring

The case back, crown, movement and dial need to be removed to install the stainless steel chapter ring and double dome sapphire crystal. (This blog was so long in the making because I tend to forget to photograph each stage of the process!)

The crystal comes away using a press with a satisfying pop! The gasket and chapter ring come with it, but mostly these need to be removed separately.

Installation of the new Sapphire Crystal & Chapter Ring

The new chapter ring can be dropped into place. Sometimes these can be a little loose fitting. The after market producers of these recommend you use a little glue to hold them in place. This one was a perfect fit, the positioning key being a snug fit also!

The gasket is placed on top of the chapter ring with a touch of silicone grease to help with water resistance. This also helps to reduce the friction, allowing the crystal to slide right in.

Water Resistance Test

The watch is then pressure tested to check the modifications have not affected the water resistance.

After a successful test, the case is put to dry. Whilst this takes place, the bezel tape can be applied ready for the assembly of the watch. If you would like full details on modifying a Seiko 5KX (SRPD55) or other see here .

All the components of the watch are re-installed. It is checked and regulated on a Timegrapher so we can ensure its time keeping.

After this one, maybe I'll get another one from Inarimod (must....resist.....the....temptation :-) ).

I bought this homage build a while ago from Inari and I can't even describe how happy I am with the watch itself. It is a perfect homage to the most beautiful classic style Rolex ever made (IMHO) - the dial is nice deep rich blue, that just shines with beautiful blue colors when the sun hits it. The lettering is also correct and very nice, not to mention that nice little detail with a red second hand that is not painted in the middle as it should be.

I 100% recommend Inari and his homage watches!

Introducing Seiko Brings A New, Slimmed Down Take On The Marinemaster

A little marinemaster here, some 62mas there – what's it add up to.

Seiko is bringing back the legendary Marinemaster name. The new-for-2023 trio of watches takes elements from the original Marinemaster and Seiko's original diver, the 62MAS, to deliver a new diver that melds old and new. The new 39.5mm Marinemaster comes with a blue, black, and silver dial – the blue and black will become a part of Seiko's permanent collection, while the silver is a 1,000-piece limited edition. 

The original Seiko Marinemaster was released to the world in 2000. It was Seiko's spec'd out, beefed up diver, complete with a 44mm monobloc case, 300 meters of water resistance, and helium-proof construction (no valve required). Seiko has released additional versions of the Marinemaster since, the last of which was the SBDX017, discontinued in 2018. It's always been at the top of the heap for its no-nonsense, tool-watch appeal, the thing Seiko does as well as anyone. We probably could've included it on the list of our 10 favorite Seikos of all time as a deep cut for enthusiasts without much objection.

For 2023, Seiko has brought back the Marinemaster name trying to infuse it with more mass appeal. Gone is that iconic one-piece case, swapped for a smaller size that measures 39.5mm and just 12.3mm thick, with a resemblance to the 62MAS and some of its reissues. But the case's shape and structure are distinct, with brushed surfaces and large, polished bevels. It has an exhibition caseback, a first for a Seiko diver. There's also some printing on the exhibition caseback, a thing brands sometimes do that's never made much sense to me – do you want me to look at it or not? Anyway, it feels like this is a watch that doesn't need an exhibition caseback. 

The new Marinemaster comes with three dial options: blue (SJE099), black (SJE101), and silver (SJE097). The blue and black join the Prospex line as part of the permanent collection, while the silver dial is a limited edition of 1,000, designed to commemorate Seiko's 100th anniversary. All three dials have horizontal grooves, with "Marinemaster" printed at 12 o'clock and the Prospex "X" at 6 o'clock. A circular date window sits at 4:30. I'll withhold judgment on the dial treatment until I see it in the metal, but it might come across as busy compared to a simple sunray finish like the SBP143 or, say, the SPB381 GMT . But, it gives the Marinemaster a more contemporary feel. 

Inside the Marinemaster lineup is the Seiko caliber 6L37. The automatic movement has a 45-hour power reserve and beats at 4 Hz. It's a movement Seiko first introduced in the Prospex SJE093 Limited Edition earlier this year.  

The bracelet for the Marinemaster is also new. It has three rounded links, with the middle links having mirror-polished and brushed surfaces. There's a push-button clasp and diver's extension. Sadly, there's no tool-free micro-adjust. This isn't a problem on a $400 Seiko 5, but it starts to be one in an upmarket diver where the competition is cutthroat, and often has quick-adjust mechanisms. When the Marinemaster hits retailers beginning in December, they'll have a price of $2,800. 

The updated Marinemaster collection brings a mix of emotions, which I suppose makes sense given the various references Seiko is making here. While the collection uses the Marinemaster name, Seiko also says they take inspiration from the original 62MAS. No doubt, the downsized case will give these watches more commercial appeal, but hardcore enthusiasts might reject the use of the Marinemaster name on a watch that is decidedly not really a Marinemaster. No doubt, other watches in Seiko's catalog carry forward some of the ethos of the original Marinemaster, but then why use the fan-favorite mark on this release? That said, this is a good-looking collection of modern dive watches, no matter what name's printed on the dial. 

The new Marinemaster feels like a thoroughly modern take on the 62MAS. The case size just works, and it's been updated to distinguish itself from the traditional 1965 case. The bracelet has also been updated, though the clasp leaves something to be desired. And I've been around enough to hear James wax on about the SPB143 . Is this watch really twice as good, as the price might suggest?

At $2,800, the Marinemaster collection is cheaper than the limited-edition SJE093 that introduced the caliber 6L37 in July. But this still leaves it in an uber-competitive space for divers. Oris, Doxa, Longines, and your favorite smaller brand all offer compelling dive watches around this price, and Tudor's within spitting distance. 

Seiko retired the last Marinemaster (SBDX017) in 2018, and that watch had a decidedly different appeal: 44mm, 300 meters of water resistance, and an 8 series movement. It also had a lower MSRP than the new Marinemaster. As James pointed out when introducing the SJE093, the price point of these watches puts a lot of pressure on the new movement, especially when you can get something like the SPB143 for a fraction of the cost. But, while that watch takes clear cues of vintage inspiration, the new Marinemaster tries to do something different. It mixes and matches different references from Seiko's past: a little Marinemaster here, some 62MAS there, all tightly packaged for something that seems intended to have more modern, commercial appeal. And no doubt, it's a handsome, modern dive watch, but with the references to the past, it's hard to forget the truly great divers we've lost along the way.
